Nature’s Food Patch Helps Tampa Bay Area Residents

Celebrate their Right to Know During Third Annual Non-GMO Month This October, Nature’s Food Patch will be one of more than 1,500 grocery retailers across North America participating in the third annual Non-GMO Month—a celebration of people’s right to choose food and products that do not contain genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Studies show that more than 90% of Americans want to know whether or not their food contains GMOs, and 2012 has seen a groundswell in the “right to know” movement. In the past year, over 1.2 million Americans have contacted the FDA asking them to implement mandatory labeling of GMO foods. During Non-GMO Month, Nature’s Food Patch will help shoppers identify Non-GMO Project Verified choices with special shelf tags, end cap displays and educational materials. Public concern about GMOs is rising as studies increasingly raise doubts about the long-term safety and environmental impact of this experimental technology. Genetic engineering forces DNA from one species into the DNA of a different species, resulting in unstable combinations of plant, animal, bacterial and viral genes that cannot occur in nature or through traditional breeding. “The right to know what we’re eating and feeding our families is so basic,” says Megan Westgate, Executive Director of the non-profit Non-GMO Project, which started Non-GMO Month. “Americans deserve the same freedom to avoid experimental GMO foods as people in other countries.” GMO labeling www.tampabaywellness.com

is mandatory in nearly 50 countries around the world, including Australia, Russia, China, and all of Europe, but no such requirements exist in the U.S. In response to the regulatory void, more than a dozen states have taken up GMO labeling bills in the last year, including a voter initiative in California that puts mandatory GMO labeling on this November’s ballot. While consumers fight for their right to know at the polls, the NonGMO Project provides shoppers an immediate solution to the presence of unlabeled GMOs. As the only third party non-GMO verification in North America, the Non-GMO Project Verified seal is quickly gaining popularity. It is now the fastest growing label claim in the natural products industry with more than 5,000 Non-GMO Project Verified products. Nature‘s Food Patch Market & Café (est. 1987) is a 22,000 SF USDA Certified Organic independent natural foods community grocery store & café located on Cleveland Street in Clearwater, FL. The store has been enthusiastically embraced by the health minded community and is known for its commitment to organic foods, quality natural products, community involvement and health education. The Clearwater Chamber of Commerce has just named Nature’s Food Patch as the winner of their Large Business of the Year Award for 2012. Their vision is to serve and inspire their community in order to build a healthier world.

D

o you ever wonder about your underlying state of health, but can’t afford expensive tests? Well, for the month of October, LifeWorks Wellness Center is offering a completely free, non-invasive health screening service which can provide real insight into your overall health. The results of the screening will be reviewed immediately and you will be given free advice and guidance about ways to improve your well-being. LifeWorks’ co-founder and Medical Director, Dr. David Minkoff explains, “This free health screen will provide patients with a good overall view of their state of health including their weight, body fat, visceral fat, muscle mass, water, and bone mass. When interpreted by a medical

White Orchid was opened as a gift to the tampa bay community from its owner, Coni Pappas.

How We Began 12 October 2012 • Tampa Bay Wellness

“I am passionate about Ashtanga yoga, because of the impact it has had on my life. After the loss of my son, nicholas in 2005. Ashtanga yoga found me, and gave me a place to heal my heart and soul. I consider it an honor to offer this beautiful, powerful tradition of healing to our community.”

Coni discovered ahstanga yoga at anala yoga in Clearwater, owned by her dear friend, ally ford. It was ally who brought Ashtanga yoga to the tampa bay area, and it was through her teaching that both Coni and heather serna, (the newly authorized teacer for white orchid,) began their journey. Ally is now an integral part of the studios; teaching Ashtanga classes, as well as both a 200/500 hr Vinyasa flow teacher trainings www.tampabaywellness.com

coverstory

Calley Coni opened a small studio in Dunedin in 2008, then expanded in 2010 to Clearwater, followed by a second location in Tampa. White Orchid is the only studio in the Tampa Bay area that teaches Ashtanga the traditional way, called mysore style. The self guided class, supported by a qualified teacher, is the way Asthanga Yoga was originally taught by the guru, Sri K Pattabhi Jois (Guruji)

Coni and her staff have worked very hard to stay true to the tradtion of Ashanga Yoga. Early on, Coni sought out the mentorship of her friends at Miami life center; owners Kino McGregor, Tim Feldman and Greg Nardi (a one time partner) who spent 6 months at the Clearwater studio.” Through their guidance we have developed a culture and community of students and

Heather teachers who love and respect Ashtanga Yoga, and who teach and practice with pure intention and honor of the tradition.” Often times a yoga class will be called Ashtanga; but without many years of training and practice, it is not possible to transmit the true essence and depth of Ashtanga Yoga. It is far more that the power classes that are often passed off as Ashtanga . Guruji and his family are very clear about certain things. We here in the west often try to modernize or change what we want, or teach what we are not qualified to teach. That’s not Ashtanga Yoga.” ‘This is truly and inner journey, an exploration, that changes and manifests in ones life in powerful ways; if you are open. It is not just about the physical exercise; that is just the tip of the iceberg, as they say” states Pappas. Ashtanga is unlike any other style of yoga in the world today. It is truly, a lifestyle, and while it asks much of the practitioner, it gives back much more in return. White orchid yoga studios are dedicated to bringing this

Jessica powerful, traditional style of yoga to the tampa bay communites. For more information about White Orchid Yoga studios please visit our website at www.whiteorchidyoga.com.

What is Ashtanga Yoga? The Ashtanga Yoga system is a living lineage that dates back nearly five thousand years, in a unbroken line of teachers, sages and gurus that reached millions of practitioners through the inspirational life of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois who passed away on May 18th, 2009. It is now continued and honored by his son Manju Pattahbi Jois, his daughter Saraswathi, his grandson Sharath Rangaswamy . Today Saraswathi and Sharath teach at the K. Pattabhi Jois Institute, in Mysore, India, in honor of his life and legacy. With the blessing of Guruji and Sharath, authorized and certified teachers continue to teach the Ashtanga tradition around the world.

Sharon Ashtanga yoga is a systematized series of poses, six series in all; in which each pose builds upon the last. This method was developed as a way to safely open the body, and begin to build strength and flexibility. The following are aspects that Pattabhi Jois emphasizes as the main components of Ashtanga Yoga. Vinyasa means breathing and movement system. For each movement, there is one breath. The purpose of vinyasa is to cleanse and purify the body and the nervous system. The next component is called the Tristana method. This means the three places of attention or action: posture (asana), breathing system and gaze (drishti). These three are very important for yoga practice, and cover three levels of purification: the body, nervous system and mind. They are always performed in conjunction with each other.

coverstory studied with Sri K. Pattabhi Jois and his grandson Sharath Rangaswamy. I experienced the true tradition of Ashtanga, and learned what it takes to be a dedicated Ashtangi. I went home ready to deepen my understanding and my practice. I practiced only Ashtanga ever since that trip. My life changed tremendously, I knew in my heart that becoming a true Ashtanga yoga teacher was my true path. I completed Ally’s Teacher training to start teaching Ashtanga -based Vinyasa flow classes.

Heather Serna, Authorized Ashtanga Yoga Teacher.

My senior year of college I mentioned to Coni that something was missing in my life. I felt empty , I knew I had to search for something to make me feel complete. Coni then gave me a book “Inspiration ,by Wayne Dyer , invited me to go to yoga class with her. I read the book and I started to take yoga classes at Anala Yoga. The book and the yoga instantly changed my life. I knew there was more out there and wanted to know more. Ally, was the first teacher to introduce me to Ashtanga yoga. I was getting close to graduating from USF and my plan was to enter graduate school. It did not feel right and I did some soul searching and ultimately decided to travel to India before I made any decisions.

I have returned to India three more times, to study at the source and with my teacher., Sharath . Each time I traveled I also became more aware of the importance of parampada or the “student teacher relationship”. On my last trip I was authorized by Sharath to teach Mysore style yoga upon my return home . In order to receive this authorization from Sharath and the Sri K. Pattabhi Jois Ashtanga Yoga Institute one must have made at least three trips to Mysore to practice under Sharath and he must feel that you are both physically and mentally ready to teach others. Sharath told me to “teach what I have taught you and to keep true to the Ashtanga tradition”. That is what we are trying to do at White Orchid. I would like to

take the opportunity to thank Coni, for not only being like a second mother to me over the last 12 years, but for taking me to that first Ashtanga Yoga class, and for supporting me in every way to realize my dreams. Ashtanga yoga has given me strength, not only physically, but emotionally, it is like meditation and therapy for my soul. I feel that the practice has helped to guide me to a clearer path. The beauty of this practice is that it is always here when I need it. As long as there is space enough for me to lay down my mat, it is there. No matter what life brings, no matter how tough times are, the practice is always available for me. It has become part of how I describe who I am has a human being. That is why I teach Ashtanga. I have a desire and yearning to share and pass on what was brought to me: peace, balance, and happiness. What I teach at White Orchid along with our group of core teachers: Jessica Lynn, Ally Ford, and Sharon Denton, is called Mysore Style Yoga. Mysore style is the traditional way to learn to practice Ashtanga. Mysore style is for all levels. It is named after the city in India where Sri. K. Pattabhi Jois taught and where to this day his grandson Sharath continues his work. In this class you learn to take individual responsibility for your yoga practice and develop a deep and trusting

relationship with your teacher. It is perhaps the only way that more advanced asanas or “postures” can be learned safely. By committing yourself to one style one teaching method and a regular practice you can open the door to deeper levels of you mind body and spirit. Mysore style, should only be taught under the guidance of an authorized or certified Ashtanga teacher. The teacher should not mislead the student in any way or veer from what he has been taught. For more information www.whiteorchidyoga.com We are currently running our first Apprenticeship Program with Calley Masson and Lisa Haag, preparing them to teach Mysore Style classes ,as well..

I take my blessing to teach Ashatanga yoga, my parampara, very seriously, and will dedicate my teaching to this honor. I am honored to teach for White Orchid, and to stay true to the tradition that has changed my life forever. The bonding of teacher and student is a tradition reaching back many thousands of years in India, and is the foundation of a rich, spiritual heritage. The teacher can make his students steady – he can make them firm where they waver. He is like a father or mother who corrects each step in his student’s spiritual practice. For more information please visit www.kpjayi.org

I mentioned to Ally that I was going to India , she suggested I go to Mysore India where Ashtanga began. I was concerned that I had little experience with Asthanga; Ally assured me that anyone is accepted at KPJAYI. So, I went for it! In Mysore I 14 October 2012 • Tampa Bay Wellness

What Ashtanga Means to our Teachers

The practice of Ashtanga Yoga has allowed me to peel back, or look beyond, layers and layers of patterns, behaviors, and habits. It has shone a light on something deeper and truer, something more real within. When I am on my mat, practicing my asanas, following my breath, controlling my senses, there is no where to go but within, there is lots of time and space to examine what is there, there is no hiding, just learning, revealing, and growing. The struggles in the practice mirror the struggles in life. Over time I have found that I am kinder to myself, and therefore kinder to others, I have more patience, more focus, and more tolerance. This will be a lifetime practice, a lifetime of learning about myself, a lifetime of revelations!

within the inner landscape and asks us to address our fears, our discomforts and places that often times, that we don’t want to go. In life, we have the tendency to continue to do what makes us comfortable, because working through the ‘stuff’ can be work. This practice humbles the ego in a way that revives the true nature of the Self. If a student is sincere and has faith and surrenders to this method, as Pattabhi Jois is known for saying, “all is coming”. These lessons can only be discovered fully when we have devotion, dedication, discipline and determination towards this practice.

things differently, not only open your heart, but, open your mind to a new way of living life. This practice is for every ‘body’, if taught by a qualified teacher. Samskaras is a word in Sanskrit, which refers to impressions that are imprinted upon us throughout our lives. We collect these each and every day. In the Ashtanga method, the samskaras that are inhibiting in our lives are broken down and replaced with new samskaras that help to propel us to new places that align with our truth. The Ashtanga method is purposely sequenced in such a way to help us to grow and face our fears, discomforts and release emotional sadness and trauma and move forward with a surrendered peace.

The lessons I have learned from my Ashtanga practice, I would never have learned from any other style of yoga. The practice asks us to fully surrender to it, and allow our commitment to the practice become a discipline that transforms our lives. This practice dives deep www.tampabaywellness.com

To gain something, you must lose something and in this case, your losing the things that are either a crutch or not serving you in your life. Ashtanga yoga has allowed my mind to be free to return to the repetitive focus onepointedness that the practice harnesses. I realized, as I surrendered to this practice that the stillness, the healing, the opening of my heart, in a way that I am receptive to truth in a new light in all areas of my life were exposed in a new and organic way. There is no thinking, there is only the method, and as one learns this method working with a qualified teacher, the lessons will be exposed in a raw way that allows you to heal, to look at

sense of self-worth. With regular practice, as I saw my body change and I grew stronger, my confidence grew, as did acceptance of myself. As my teacher helped me do things on the yoga mat I never thought I would, I started to believe anything was possible. Now, this is the attitude I with which I approach life. I have conviction that I can achieve my goals, and at the same time am patient with myself, accepting and trusting at a deeper level that things work out as they should. And now as a parent, these are the principals I’m instilling into my children. Ashtanga Yoga will always be a part of my life.

Ashtanga Yoga changed my life, and continues to do so every day. For years I struggled with body image and lacked a deep rooted

Ashtanga Yoga is unique and powerful, giving students the opportunity to reveal their true Self. This practice has changed my life and everyday, continues to provide an opportunity for me to explore the many layers of the body and the mind, allowing me to live a life with increased awareness, understanding, and compassion. Most of all, the practice teaches me to be present in each and every moment and allows me to live a life of gratitude in the present moment. Tampa Bay Wellness • October 2012 15

Computrition at USF:

Ensuring a Healthier Campus An Interview with Christina Berry, MS, RD, LDN . USF Dining Dietician “As a college student with such a busy and diverse schedule, it is often difficult to choose healthy options on a regular basis. It can be challenging to do all of the planning, cooking, shopping and cleaning while trying to focus on your studies. There are so many factors that impact a college student’s ability to learn and live a healthy lifestyle. Therefore, providing the resources and available information to plan ahead is ideal. USF Dining’s new web based menus provides students with a convenient way to plan meals and be more aware of what they are consuming on a long-term basis.” Christina Berry, MS, RD, LDN

Christina Berry, USF Dining’s Registered Dietician, recently initiated the use of Computrition at USF. Computrition combines cutting-edge technology with vital nutritional data to help students adapt their dietary patterns to meet Nutritional Guidelines for Americans. College students encounter both positive and negative influences every day. “USF dining helps to provide a piece of the puzzle,” however, Christina explains. “It is our goal to use Computrition, in collaboration with other programs, departments, and organizations on campus to promote nutrition education and awareness.” 16 October 2012 • Tampa Bay Wellness

This month Christina Berry talks with Tampa Bay Wellness Magazine about her efforts to increase nutritional awareness and ensure a healthier campus. When did you first become interested in focusing your career on nutrition and health? I actually started out at the University of Central Florida as a Forensic Science major, but changed to Criminal Justice because, at the time, I didn’t really like the sciences. Little did I know that my passion and enthusiasm for nutrition and wellness would culminate in my next few years of college. Having some very close friends with eating disorders as well as playing competitive soccer for about 16 years influenced my interest in clinical and sports nutrition. After taking the basic 1201 nutrition class, I knew that I wanted to focus my career on nutrition and health. As a senior, I transferred to Florida State University to pursue my Bachelor’s degree in Dietetics. I decided to further my education and completed a dual Masters in Clinical Nutrition, with an emphasis on Sports Nutrition, as well as a Masters in Exercise Physiology. Why did you decide to become a Registered Dietician?

Becoming a Registered Dietician was important to me in order to provide quality information and care based on evidencebased practice guidelines and protocols. As an RD, I am able to provide accurate and available information in a manner that is useful and easy to understand. I strive to excel in my area, and I have a drive to help others overcome their struggles and pursue a healthy lifestyle. Unfortunately, there is a great deal of misinformation and an increased focus on fad diets and “quick fixes”; it is often difficult for people to determine what is real and what is not. It is about more than just changing your eating habits. It is about understanding your body and learning how to take care of it. As we all know, it will not happen overnight; however, if I can just be a small part in changing someone’s mindset or initiating a positive change, then we are headed in the right direction. What led you to share your education and career skills here in the Tampa Bay Area at the University of South Florida? I was born and raised in Tampa. After living away for about nine years to pursue degrees, this position with USF Dining provided me with the perfect opportunity

to come back home and share my education and career skills with such an important population. Not just at USF, but at any large college or university, with everything going on in a student’s life and all of the eating options and temptations, it is not always easy to make healthy choices without someone or something to help out. Therefore, I was excited to be a part of a program that truly invests its time and interest in following healthy initiatives on campus. What is the most challenging part of your job? Although nutrition and wellness is a growing field that is becoming more accepted each day, it is often challenging to figure out how to change an individual’s misconceptions and/ or bad habits from what they already know and understand to what is true and real. Finding a simple way to provide those resources as well as health and nutrition information in a way that society will understand and be able to easily accept and use is somewhat challenging. What do you find most rewarding about your job? From providing healthier options and accessibility to nutritional resources on campus www.tampabaywellness.com

to helping and accommodating students with food allergies, there are so many factors that I find rewarding in working with USF Dining. At the end of the day, whether it’s providing students with nutrition education and awareness, or having nutritional resources available and accessible, it is rewarding to know that you are guiding individuals in the right direction with the correct information. What is Computrition? How would you describe its benefits? Computrition is our new interactive web menu service that instantaneously allows you to access complete ingredient listings, allergen information, and respective nutritional values of each menu item. Individuals are able to view a specific menu, current meal offerings, as well as make meal choices while viewing the nutritional content for different items. You are also able to print nutritional information for individual menu items as well as for your entire menu. It will allow you to add specific meal items to your personal meal selections. The system automatically tallies the nutritional information of the total meal. The goal is for Computrition to help promote healthy dining choices as well as to make students/customers more aware of healthier options offered on campus. Computrition is available to help students find nutritional information easily and quickly when in a hurry or to help plan out what health options are available at Champion’s Choice. Does Computrition analyze food types (e.g., bananas, apples, soda), or does it analyze specific meals that vendors provide? www.tampabaywellness.com

Computrition is a nutrition analysis program. It analyzes the meals and food items served at Champion’s Choice by looking at the ingredients in the recipes and linking to the correct nutritional information from the nutritional database. What made you decide to lead an initiative to use Computrition at USF? At the time USF Dining decided to utilize Computrition, there were not any other nutrition analysis programs out there that had been used in this scope of practice. There seemed to be a need and demand from our student population for more accessible and accurate nutrition and allergen information on campus and at our dining facilities. Therefore, this was the best way to provide easy and quick access to menu options and nutritional information on campus.

have. Spending more time & energy focusing on the actions that will get us there, and actually putting them into motion. When we focus a majority of our time & energy on looking at what we don’t have, our “faults” or our limitations, we tend to get more of the same, have you ever noticed that? Yet when we change our focus, even just a little bit, we begin to see a shift in our reality. We actually begin to experience the positive changes we’re focused on.

So I asked her, “What if you’re naturally curvaceous and not supposed to be waif like? What if your body just needs to move more, and all you really need to focus on are eating foods that make you feel lighter and more energized, instead of following such restrictive diets all the time?” She thought about it and decided to give it a try, because she believed at this point, “What did I have to lose?”. I saw her again a few weeks later and she had a new spring in her step & a twinkle in her eyes that I hadn’t seen in years. I asked her if she had a new boyfriend and she said no, but she felt like a new woman. She’d been focused on spending more time finding ways to move more and eating foods that made her feel light and energized. Best of all she lost 10 pounds without even trying!

And for many of us, when that change occurs, because it’s so unfamiliar, we become fearful of it and run back to where it’s comfortable. Back to our limiting thoughts. But what would it feel like if we gave ourselves the opportunity to get comfortable with that slight shift in our thinking?

It makes me think of a friend of mine who told me again, over one of our bi-weekly lunches together, that she was sick and tired of feeling fat and tired all the time. She didn’t want to look at another bathing suit, or try on clothes in a dressing room ever again! My friend has never noticed that she’s beautiful. Every time we go somewhere men can’t seem to avoid looking at her. She has a natural voluptuous & curvy figure that is very feminine. Yet in her eyes she’s “fat”.

If we want something different, like better health, a more satisfying relationship, a more rewarding job or a more fulfilling spiritual life, we need to focus on the life we want to see, hear and feel in our experiences every day. Then simply do a top priority step each day towards creating that reality. This is no secret. It’s not even magic. It’s simply your conscious decision to stop watering negative seeds and giving yourself permission to put into motion a life that deeply satisfies and fulfills you. One that

is almost effortless in it’s ability to bring you a feeling of being whole, complete and centered every day. I first noticed this over twenty years ago when I began having seizures due to my diet and inability to handle stress at the time. Very often I would find myself focused on being depressed, stressed out and completely anxious over “What If” thoughts going through my head. I would start eating sweets initially, then I would avoid food altogether. My breathing would become very short and centered in my chest. I would begin to feel dizzy or light headed, but would shrug it off and begin to eat more sweets. It was a vicious cycle. Then I had my wake up call. I began having seizures regularly. I was dismissed from college and examined by neurologists at NYU medical. At that time no

one had any answers for the cause of my seizures. I felt trapped in my body, in my brain, in my life. I wanted out. Eventually doctors told me it was “psychosomatic”. This meant that they believed it was all in my head. I got really annoyed and decided to “show them” that it wasn’t in my head! So I made a conscious decision to heal. And I did. I have not had another seizure in years, and my ability to handle stress has so dramatically changed, that I am now able to help other women easily handle their stress/anxiety. I simply changed my focus, from FEAR to FUN! I reframed the way I was interpreting the world around me, began eating more empowering foods that were right for me, and found a way to move that felt nourishing and restorative. It was that simple shift in my thinking that made all the difference.

What is it that you truly want to see, hear and feel in your life every day? Changing the quality of your thoughts is part of being Food Empowered. s we rush through our day with work, kids, jobs, school and relationships trying to fulfill everbody’s needs to the best of our ability, the days seem to stretch into weeks or months before we can catch a breath for ourselves. Inevitably, there will come a moment when we find ourselves wishing for some peace and calm. But sometimes going to the gym, or yoga class though a good idea seems like one more place to get to. So it’s best to seek just not any space but one of calm quietude.

CALM QUIETUDE

Quietude: meaning a state of gentle, calm, tranquil and undisturbed peace. Thinking it doesn’t exist? Wanting to be there now but a vacation is not practical or out of reach? Well, it is closer than you think! Being alone with one’s self and quieting the mind relaxes the body, nervous system and releases tension from the muscles. Indeed, there is a trick to this but it’s an easy one. Have you ever seen the sun at dusk as it is setting off the horizon while on the beach. The sun is a big ball of fire that emits an array of colors that streaks across the sky. Take a moment to remember one time in the

early evening, think of being on the beach, get a picture of it in your mind’s eye…the reds, oranges, blues and purples of the sun as it sets. Now pay attention to what happens within your body as you visualize that event within your creative subconscious! Notice how your breath begins to slow down and you breathe a little deeper than you normally would breathe, slower and deeper… and that your shoulders drop a little and relax, that’s it …. Now take a deliberately deeper breath. Perhaps it isn’t the beach but a mountain or particular meadow that you recall easier. Sitting under a tree, feeling the bark against your back, noticing the verdant green of the blades of grass that surround you…the majesty of the mountains as they seem to stretch upward; higher, ever higher into the sky. The rustling sound of the breeze as it flows through the branches and caresses the leaves above your head, the coolness of the earth under you...

Take a moment to just think of being in one of these two places, what else do you notice …just take a moment to be in that space a little longer. Notice with me now how your body feels. Is it a little calmer and more rela xed? If so, good job! You just asked your mind to actively do something and it responded! The problem has been you haven’t been asking because your mind is focused elsewhere. But a minute ago, you actively asked your mind to create a visualization then paired it with a meditative exercise. This method is called being mindful. Mindful awareness redirects the mind. Having sensory specific detail helps the inner mind to focus and pay attention.

Making time to go to the beach, walking a trail in the mountain or sitting amongst the trees in the park physically is great but not necessary to achieve a sense of peace or create a space of calm quietude.

Rev. Charles Zinner

“P

lastics are the way of the future”, the character was told as he listened to his cohorts. He was in the process of going to college and learning about life. “ You get into plastics and your fortune will be assured!” he was told. It sounded good to him and he decided to go for it. Similarly, in the application of practical principles towards spiritual and personal development, we find that there is an amorphous, plastic-like quality that characterizes and surrounds our existence. It is an energy that is omni-pervasive and when molded by thoughts, beliefs and action, can be directed to shape our future. Most of the time, this energy seems to somehow have its own mind. We find that there are unexpected twists and turns, reminiscent of the “box of chocolates” theory, in which we never know what we are going to get! As a result of getting a few of the less than desirable chocolates, we tend to fear what may be coming down the road, and think we are more likely to receive “bad” stuff. It is the emotion of an event that we remember. Emotions leave indelible marks on us because of the energy that accompanies an experience. We can have extremely positive or negative emotions. To illustrate this, remember back to when you were the happiest. Probably there is not a lot of definition as far as remembering the details, but what stands out is the event and the accompanying emotion. Remember the 22 October 2012 • Tampa Bay Wellness

day you met the one you love. Remember how extraordinarily beautiful it felt, and feel that powerful emotional energy, the energy that warms you to your core. This memorable emotion is forever stamped into your conscious being and will always be with you. The plastic quality of the energy that surrounds us, that is, the etheric energy of the Universe, is shaped and directed by our conscious (and subconscious) thoughts. We literally are emanating our own energy of thoughts, beliefs, and emotions which interplay and interact with the ether. This is like we are constantly stirring the omnipresent energetic soup, and mixing it in a combination of own energy, thus producing a new set of occurrences. No wonder we achieve results different from that which we were attempting! Thus we have the combination of both the conscious and subconscious, and also all of our constantly changing thoughts and beliefs, mixing with the Universe! So it is nice to know that the energy of the Universe is always around us like a plastic and always changing soup, that we are constantly interacting with it and we can create untold numbers of experiences for an interesting and beautiful life. But what practical advice is there, that will help ensure that we are more adept at mastering the shape and outcome of this etheric energy? How and what do we do or become in order to really accomplish all of this?

Dr David R. Hawkins, author of Power vs. Force, at one of the monthly Sedona conclaves said that one should “be that which one desires.” That is a nice way of saying one must embody the highest principles which will accomplish the mission. In other words, to always choose the highest principles and adhere to them in all moments, regardless of the circumstances. To unconditionally dedicate oneself to the principles that promote human existence such as love, compassion, joy, gratitude and in this way that energy will mix with the Universal energy and produce the best possible results! Even a partial application can produce astounding results. So, is there a practical example or illustration of this principle? Can it actually be shown that incorporating these thoughts, beliefs and actions can shape the plasticity of our existence? In fact, there is in the personal account by Charles Burke, who was a doorto-door salesman. When he accepted the job he was overjoyed at the various aspects of being out of an office, being outside, talking to other people, and the extreme variety of all his experiences. So in his consciousness and being, he personified joy, happiness and gratefulness- all emotions which are positive. The results were spectacular as he would accomplish his daily goals at twice the rate of his fellow salesmen. All flowed. He believed that in order to succeed, he needed to view the Universe as an energy that provided everything, and to express his joy and gratitude for all that came his way. eyes or throat and there are no fumes to breathe during your salon visit. There are no ammonia or ammonia derivatives, no formaldehyde, sulfates, resorcinol, PPD or PPT. It is healthier for your body and your hair, which also means longer lasting color and shine.

What ingredients do I need to be aware of and why? The top three to avoid are ammonia, resorcinol, and PPD/PPT.

Frequently Asked Questions Your skin is your body’s largest organ, its first line of defense and it is also one of the key elimination channels. It is estimated that at up to 60% of what is put on your body is absorbed and according to Skin Deep Cosmetics Database, over 80% of the ingredients used in the beauty industry are not tested for safety! The food that you eat goes through different filtrations in your stomach, small and large intestines which help your body to eliminate some of the toxins. Unfortunately, your skin does not have a filter! What is applied to your skin is absorbed directly into your blood stream. This is so powerful that topical medication is being used on the skin as a more effective way into the bloodstream because it bypasses the digestive system all together. Many people today are becoming more conscious of toxins and are choosing to color their hair with organic and natural products. With this growing trend of “green is better” and all of the emerging products, it can be daunting and confusing. Here are some of the key questions about organic and natural color to help you decide if it is right for you!

What are the biggest benefits of organic color? You do not experience itching, burning 24 October 2012 • Tampa Bay Wellness

Ammonia was specifically designed to burn and degrade surfaces, and is commonly used in commercial cleaning products and to manufacture explosives. Its effects on your body and on your hair are predictably negative. Itching, flaking, fogginess, fatigue, coughing, headaches, eye irritation or dizziness are all common side effects of ammonia. The World Health Organization and Environmental Protection Agency have both linked ammonia to causing cancer. Resorcinol is a common ingredient used in hair color and bleaching products. It has a long list of reasons to avoid it! It is considered to be a highly toxic skin irritant, damaging to the immune system, as well as the thyroid. It is also known to cause severe headache, nausea, vomiting, restlessness, acute or chronic heart rate changes and overall weakness, Resorcinol may be stored in fat cells and released into the blood stream at a later time, causing more residual damage.

are derived from petroleum products. They have been known to cause allergic reactions such as skin, eye and bronchial irritations.

Why is organic color better? In addition to all of the side effects listed above, with every application, ammonia damages a very important amino acid or protein in your hair called tyrosine, responsible for producing melanin, the natural pigment, and keeping your hair healthy and strong. By blowing open the hair shaft with ammonia, or ammonia derivatives, it is difficult to shut the cuticle back down. Over time, by continuing to color this way, the hair is less able to hold onto color. This is why, in the beginning of coloring your hair, you may have found it was healthier and held color better. In addition, organic color is a more ecofriendly choice. It is certified vegan and cruelty free by PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), does not contain any animal products, is not tested on animals, nor are any of the ingredients tested on animals prior to the final product.

How does it work without ammonia?

According to research done on Skin Deep’s Cosmetic Database, the following types of resorcinol are extremely hazardous: 1,3-Benzenediol; Ci Developer 4; M-Dihydroxybenzene; M-Hydroquinone; 3-Hydroxyphenol; Oxidation Base 31; M-Phenylenediol; Resorcin; 1,3Benzenediol; 1,3-Benzenediol; And 1,3-Dihydroxybenzene.

A: Organic color uses a process of using oil to soften the hair cuticle to allow the color molecule into the hair shaft. By not opening the cuticle up so much, and using a more gentle process, it is easier to close the cuticle back up tightly. This is important because the tighter the hair cuticle, the longer the hair color will last, the shinier your hair will be and the less frizzy. There are other factors that affect this as well like the proper use of shampoos, how good your hot appliances are, how good your water is, and outside elements, like exposure to sun, chlorine, salt water, and sweat.

This second list, has words containing “resorcinol”, however they are not considered to be toxic or harmful: 4-Butylresorcinol; Butylresorcinol; 4-Chlororesorcionol; Hexylresorcinol; And 2-Methylresorcinol

With conventional color, ammonia is used to raise the pH of the hair, open the hair cuticle and allow the color molecule to enter the hair cortex and attach. The more ammonia in the color, the higher the pH of the hair is raised.

There are different types of resorcinol and not all are toxic!

PPD/PPT (Para-Phenylenediamine or Paratoluenediamine) are dyes that are commonly used in hair color pigments and

The color I use says it is ammonia free. Is it really? www.tampabaywellness.com

Maybe. More and more companies are going ammonia free and this is good news! Unfortunately, many of these companies are replacing it with an ammonia derivative called ethanolamine. It has the same side effects as ammonia. The color line that I use does have a small amount of ethanolamine in it. It is derived from a natural source of coconut. Oleic acid is also used to neutralize any residue of ethanolamine. In my opinion, it is still by far, the safest color line available today.

Can you achieve all the same colors with organic color? Yes an organic color specialist can achieve beautiful blondes, rich brunettes and vibrant reds with organic color.

Will it cover grey? Yes, organic color offers 100 % grey coverage. Grey hair is usually more difficult to cover in any color line due to the coarseness and lack of pigmentation in the hair. Organic has an entire selection of colors made specifically to cover stubborn grey hair.

How long does it last?

A: The organic color will last just as long as the color that you are using now, if not longer. No color line can do anything about the new hair that grows in. Overwhelmingly, I get feedback from clients that feel the organic color last longer. The reason for this is because it is less damaging to your hair during the coloring process. The hair is able to retain more moisture & protein. Protein is what color latches onto. The more protein your hair has, the healthier your hair is and the longer the color will last.

Does organic cost more? Not necessarily. Prices do vary from salon to salon, even when comparing non-organic color salons and are based on things such as experience and education, as well as the color used. The color prices are comparable to other salons of the same quality.

My stylist says organic color does not work. Is this true? This is absolutely not true! Organic color has been around for over 15 years. The technology used behind the organic color is different than conventional color and what is

currently taught in cosmetology schools. The end result is the same (i.e., a color shift takes place in the hair); however the road to get there is different! For this reason, there are different procedures and steps that need to be taken. Most stylists that are saying organic color does not work have either never used it before or were not using it properly & following the correct procedures. I personally have been using organic color for five years now, and have a successful salon business, with more than half of my clients having been with me since before I went organic, and approximately 90% of our clients receiving color services.

Is it safe to use while I am pregnant? This is something that is best for you to discuss with your doctor. Some clients color their hair during the entire pregnancy, some do it after the first trimester, and some take a break until after giving birth. The organic is definitely healthier for you and your baby than other color lines. That all being said discuss with your doctor your concerns and they will help you come up with the best decision for you and your baby.

How do I really know what is being used on me and what the ingredients are? Just ask. Your stylist should give you the name of the color line being used on you. The ingredients are listed on the color packaging or bottle. You can also contact the company headquarters for the color line and ask for a list of ingredients. Any company with integrity will easily give them to you. In closing, do your own research and do not be afraid to ask questions. A true professional will not be offended by your wanting to know what you are putting on your body and hair. Try organic for yourself and see the difference. Today, in order to live your healthiest life, it is just as important to pay attention to what you put on your body, as it is to pay attention to what you put in your body. Health Benefits: Coconut: Coconut is widely misunderstood because of it’s high fat content; however, coconut’s saturated fat is made up of mediumchain fatty acids. These mediumchains are easy to absorb and digest, and are converted quickly into energy. This means that the body is less likely to store the medium-chain as fat. Coconut is also a great source of dietary fiber with a whopping 5 grams per oz! Prep Time: 5 minutes. Cook Time: 20 minutes Calories per serving: 250. by Arielle Giordano in physical form. From here you can explore other areas within yourself, such as how you feel moving a particular body part, what you are thinking, as well as your feelings, stresses, and perspectives. Everything that you have ever experienced is housed within your body. It is the inn/storekeeper for your life, challenges, experiences, joys, and sorrows. Here five ways you can focus on using dance to heal and help you to look and feel better:

1. Release Old Patterns

Born to Dance A

s humans, we were born to dance. Since ancient times, dance has been an important part of our identities. Millions of years ago, one tribe member asked another, “What do you dance?” What was once our human signature has now become images and videos on our Facebook pages! We define ourselves on our Facebook page as we share who we are with friends instead of an identity of dance.

Through enjoying and relaxing into the body, you can go deeper within your being. You can feel all parts of your body and experience its vulnerability. Being in the body and the expression of it assists in the shifting and healing of physical cellular structures. This movement has the ability to set into action previously unknown and unseen thoughts and feelings. As a result, insights, awareness, and experiences have an opportunity to come into conscious awareness. You begin to dance from the inside out!

Dance and movement allow us to be aware in our bodies and physically present to shift in new ways. Through these movements, we are teaching ourselves new patterns and ways to function. On a mental level, dance allows us to release the challenges, stresses, and dramas of our everyday lives and replace them with freeing thoughts. Emotionally, dance helps to create new brain patterns by breaking down old ingrained feelings, and spiritually we get to express ourselves in creative ways.

Dance is an unspoken universal language of the whole body, and it is an integral aspect of the universal mind. Dance consciousness is the graceful state of being and movement inherent within all sentient beings because it provides an opportunity to express the highest within all forms of existence. As everything in the universe dances, you dance with it. As humans, we flow, we pulse, we harmonize, we integrate. We are dancing beings. Dance is a form of body language that expresses itself in unique ways

through the instrument of the body, which has the ability to open your heart and touch the soul. The body has the awareness to let you see and move into new internal spaces. Set it free to explore your hidden qualities and new ways of experiencing the world. This universal impulse to move, which we now call “dance,” exists today just as it did millions of years ago. In cultures both past and present, dance has been integrated into ceremonies for weddings, funerals, courting, instruction, storytelling, healing, arousal, amusement, entertainment, exercise, fun, uplifting the spirit, paying homage to gods and goddesses, and seeking and attaining aesthetic beauty that cannot be put into words. This devotion of dance has transformational powers of transcendence to inspire and awaken the soul and the spirit of your being. It is an invitation into your own body’s awareness to move in time and space and enjoy being

As you use dance to become more aware of being in your body, notice that each movement has within it the potential to release hidden thoughts, feelings, insights, and awareness. All people have old crusty patterns that they replay everyday, and those patterns can be moved into conscious awareness and transmuted through dance. You have the ability to become that movement, that expression of your body, and you can use it to discover who you are as a being and uncover your own uniqueness through creative expression. Just take a moment and look around. We live in a moving universe. Everything is in constant motion. From the minute you are born to the moment you die, your cells are moving and dancing within you.

2. Focus on Posture Posture is very important in dance. If you watch the television show “Dancing with the Stars,” notice how often you hear the word posture. Here are some tips for improving your stance: stand tall with tummy tucked in and under. If you look at yourself in the mirror you will be straight and your shoulders, hips, and ankles will be in alignment. Shoulders are down and slightly pressed back. Tuck your bottom underneath your www.tampabaywellness.com

spine. Then take a deep breath, belly in, shoulders up and down, and bottom tucked under the spine. Center your body weight in a standing position. Do not lean forward or backward. Warning: You may look 10 pounds lighter with your new posture!

3. Create Brain Activity Dancing stimulates brain activity and function, and it can even prevent Alzheimer’s disease. Dance prevents Alzheimer’s disease because of the activation and stimulation of the brain cortex and hemisphere called the Action Observation Network. We might begin to learn a dance step when someone describes it to us, but we learn it better when we physically perform the steps as we observe and imitate an instructor doing them. This esearch sheds light on the brain’s action observa-

www.tampabaywellness.com

tion network, which fires up both when we perform an action and when we watch someone else perform it. The Dana FOundation “What Can Dance Teach us about Learning?” By Scott T. Grafton M.D. , October 5, 2009. You must use your brain to dance and follow the steps. Listen, watch, focus, observe, and consciously process information at the same time you are moving your body and following another’s example. The neurons in your brain imitate an instructor with observation learning when taking a dance lesson, it creates new neural pathways.

4. Generate Physical Energy A fun activity such as dance stimulates the body and the endorphins in the brain. This movement creates more overall physical, mental, emotional, and

even spiritual activity. It is the first step in having more energy, motivation, and focus, which can be directed to successfully complete mental tasks, especially for people who have attention challenges (such as myself). Enjoy the process of you. Give yourself permission to allow your dance to awaken the potential within. Let new elements and qualities express and move through your body. It is not about “getting the moves right.” This is about the expression of you dancing through your body. This is the about your dance, your story, your journey of life. Relax, enjoy, and be free to experience uninhibited movement. Be the flow within you as you dance, and let your dance become your life!

5. Feel Good about Yourself The more expressive movement allows you to be who you truly are and the more fully present you are in your own unique dance, the better you will look and feel. Feeling good about yourself is rooted within a balance of the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual bodies—which are all interconnected with each step you take. As you heal and grow in your inner and outer dance, you begin to glow in our own flow! As your inner beauty glows, it shows in your body and so does your-self-confidence!!

Be the flow within you as you dance and let your dance become your life!

An Herbal Journey Why Herbs? It is said that herbs are like a key that fit in our keyhole brain receptors, unlocking our genetic code and rewiring us to our natural path. We are all coming back to the old ways. Instead of masking symptoms with prescription drugs, thereby causing more side effects that need yet another drug, people are looking for natural healing alternatives. Herbs are Mother Earth’s gift to us. Her knowledge is inherent in every leaf, flower, bark, berry and seed. Every animal knows its remedy and from man’s observations of animals, has come most of our knowledge of herbs and their uses. All herbs and other healing plants (like aloe vera) have chemical constituents that

match our own body’s systems. Each family of plants has its own peculiar habit of taking from the soil a specific group of chemical elements. By using herbs in their complete form, the body’s healing process utilizes a balance of ingredients provided by nature.

My Journey In my early 20’s herbs saved my sanity. My passionate, emotional nature would uncork and erupt out of my head. Yep, I suffered from migraines. Though our family didn’t visit doctors much, the symptoms were debilitating me every day. So I was put on medication. After yelling at a pharmacist over the phone for messing up my

prescription, I knew the meds were affecting my moods. I weaned myself off and picked up an old book my mom had on her shelf from Adele Davis. Though not a hippy (she was from an older generation), my mom was a health food nut. I mean, e-gads, she even put brewer’s yeast in my toddler formula. Our family has always learned to heal themselves through home remedies. Before I was born, my parents managed a dairy with my five brothers and sisters in the late 50’s. My dad took care of the cows when they were sick and milked them twice a day. While I was growing up in the 70’s, my father worked for a veterinarian supply company. ARIES SELF-RELIANCE…is part of the formula for you as you tune into more of your intuitive type of vision. Seek to make messages to others crystal clear. Go deeper and explore areas in which you lack clarity or feel uncertainty. Do not place too much emphasis on appearance –seek to tap into more substance.

LEO MOVE ON…to the new. There are new thoughts, feelings and ideas awaiting. Like a caravan that is headed west it is time to take a risk and seek out some new adventures. Do not persist on a path that has grown tired and unfulfilling. You are not alone and there are no doubt others who may be having the same feeling. In your case, consider taking some new action that can help to stimulate and catalyse growth. Do not play it safe for that is truly no fun at all!

SAGITTARIUS AT T U N R M E N T …is the keyword now. Like a flock of wild geese, tune into where you need to be putting energy and focus and reorder your priorities. Make the most of your days and get goals done in plenty of time. Take turns with others regarding responsibilities and spread those wings wide!

TAURUS RAISE the SPIRIT…in times of stress it can be the simple pleasures that uplift the spirit. Care for yourself and others by doing simple things that just show that you care. Make the extra phone call, share your supper or send that card. Small efforts done with love can invoke powerful healing and bring comfort and relief to all concerned.

VIRGO DOMAIN…look around now to see how you can improve your living space. Make things as efficient as possible. There is a need to feel more nurtured by your surroundings as well as finding a place where you feel you truly “fit” and feel comfortable. Ponder some ideas as to how you can also create or improve your retreat space. Creativity, meditation, quiet and introspection can work wonders in filling up empty spaces…both within and without!

CAPRICORN RELIANCE…on your creative and intellectual skills is important now. You may not be seeing as clearly as you normally do so it could be wise to ask another’s trusted opinion. On the other hand, two heads are typically better than one as things one might miss are identified. Things can be taken above and beyond their current situation and ultimately can be better than you expected. Either way, it is important to lighten up a bit and just enjoy the process. Imsara is an evolutionary astrologist, acupuncture physician, writer and speaker. She holds a Doctor of Oriental Medicine and a Master’s in Public Health. Imsara is offering a

GEMINI OPEN…sesame as new winds blow in from the heavens. Lucky you. There are deeper levels of abundance coming in that can be more self-sustaining, nurturing and just plain fun. Keep your options open and remember that even in the simplest of meetings or opportunities can spring great things. Bring chosen ideas more into material formation and watch what forms!

LIBRA First attempts at newly attempted ventures may not pan out quite like you imagined. However, things will tend to improve and doubts can vanish as you attempt certain tasks that lie beyond your current skill set or vision. Innovation is key. Really strive to be different as you move into the birthday year before you. It is a period that can feel lighter and brighter in multifarious ways!

AQUARIUS FASCINATION…with events over the coming months can play a key role in helping you to realize the difference between what people say and what they really do. Events can occur that can be shocking in how quickly things can change. Do not be distracted by elements that are fundamentally irrelevant to your life. Lessons will be learned via the pay as you go plan but make the most of it. Embracing a bit of innocence in your outlook can also work wonders! series of exciting new classes both in St. Petersburg and at Om Gaia in Bradenton, Florida. Imsara also offers a unique set of services both in Oriental Medicine and energy

CANCER TRANSCEND…what troubles you to see new possibilities. Sometimes the distance between you and the answer can feel pretty far. Most things of enduring value take time to build. Bridge any gaps by cultivating new ways of looking at your situation while at the same time you generate options that perhaps have gone unnoticed. Seek to deepen connection and foster more progress by cultivating help as you need to.

SCORPIO the DISCHARGE…of any pent up emotions or resentments is a healing path for you now. Be careful with your words and seek to lighten any areas of intensity with a deeper sense of fairness and responsibility. Take the opportunity now to defuse any volatile situations in your life before it goes on for too long. Staying resentful or secretive about what you really feel is unproductive.

PISCES PLAY…like children in the sandbox, take some time out to be by the water and enjoy your friends and family, no strings attached. Getting together with like-minded friends can do wonders in helping to ease stress and build health and healing. Take some time to just revel in life’s more light-hearted side!
