n spite of long-term studies that have shown the adverse effects of accelerated academics, children today still suffer from the stress and anxiety caused by an over-emphasis on academics at younger and younger ages. A condition known as “school sickness” results from the pressure of exerting mental capacities that are not fully developed and ready to be used for academics. Schools in Scandinavia do not begin academics until age 7 and have not been faced with the problem of lack of school readiness. Studies have revealed that children who start grade one before they are 6 years and 3 months old experience more learning disabilities, repeat more grades and, shockingly, report more suicides in adolescence. Mylenation of nerves in the brain is a slow process that requires time and is not wholly completed until age 21. The left side of the brain, the side required for the learning of phonics, is not completely developed until age 7. The ability of the eye to focus on small print is not fully developed until age 7. Given these developmental benchmarks, one must ask, “What is the force behind the push-down of academics to earlier and earlier ages?” “What is the hurry?” Children who attend Waldorf play-based kindergarten programs are able to learn first grade skills in half the time, if they transfer into a mainstream school and go through the traditional first grade review. If children are able to learn more easily and quickly

when they have matured developmentally, why are they being forced to do first grade academics in kindergarten? There are essential foundational activities that can best be developed in the traditional play-based kindergarten that children today are missing when kindergartens are focusing on early academics. Equally important for the young child is a stress-free environment that is warm and secure so that learning can take place. To learn how the Waldorf Kindergarten prepares the young child for first grade through a creative, play-based program, parents and their young children are invited to attend the Suncoast Waldorf School Open House on Saturday, February 9th. at 9:30 where they will be immersed in the magic of the Waldorf kindergarten through play, movement, snack and story. Parents of grades children will become Waldorf students themselves as they attend a selection of mini-classes including chemistry, creative writing, movement work, upper grades math, fine art and more. They will learn first-hand how the arts are used in Waldorf schools to teach the academics and, thus, provide an education that is age appropriate and free of inordinate stress. Refreshments will be served. RSVP at enrollment@suncoastwaldorf.org or call 727 786-8311. For more information, go to www. suncoastwaldorf.org. Barbara Bedingfield is Founding Director of Suncoast Waldorf School and has taught both kindergarten and the grades in the school.

Growing: A Fresh Take on

Sweetwater Organic Community Farm An Interview with Founder Rick Martinez

F

resh food, community, friendship, education—Sweetwater Organic Community Farm has been planting and harvesting these for residents of the Tampa Bay area for the last 20 years. Founder Rick Martinez began with an idea to create something for the community, and that is what he and others have done since starting production 20 years ago in 1993. “I had really made a choice that was at the cutting edge at the time,” Martinez explains.

Martinez, a third generation Tampanian, had been farming in Pasco County when he heard about Community Supported Agricultural (CSA) Programs and aspired to start one in the Tampa Bay area. A very small group of seven families got together and decided to conduct an experiment. This experiment entailed starting up without employees. As Martinez describes, “In the early decade it was just a small group, and we did all the work together.” Within approximately one year, however, the small start-up-group had about 18 families, and approximately forty families the year after that. The venture grew quickly, evolving from hiring one employee, to acquiring a piece of land across the creek, to developing a relationship with Bern’s Steak House, to improving the farm’s equipment and infrastructure, to forming a board of directors that takes responsibility for strategic planning and key decisions. Since then, Sweetwater Organic Community Farm’s Facebook page, which features photographs, event announcements, and feedback from the Sweetwater Facebook community, has earned almost 5,000 “likes.” The Sweetwater Organic Community Farm Web site offers up to date information about the farm, CSA membership and pick-up, current events including Sweetwater Sundays, programs, and opportunities to get involved. And Martinez and community supporters, thrilled to play an integral role in the Tampa Bay community, are eager to continue educating the public (especially children) about how to get back to our

coverstory human roots, and how to participate in supplying food for our families’ tables. When did you initially get involved with the organic food industry? In 1979. I was an engineer, I had become interested in gardening, and I just made a career decision, much to the dismay of my parents, who had high hopes for my engineering career; but later in life they were happy to see that I had chosen this career and had done so well with it. As it became more of a prominent factor in our food panorama, they realized that I had really made a choice that was at the cutting edge at the time.

create something for the community. What challenges did you anticipate or face when you initially got started? How did you overcome those challenges? We’ve had a number of challenges over the years.

“Community support—that’s been the key to success in overcoming all of our challenges.” One of the biggest challenges is funding this whole operation. Our education program is extremely expensive and that continues to be one of our biggest challenges. It’s an essential and important part of who we are and what we do and intend to do as part of our mission.

What motivated you to begin this endeavor here in the Tampa Bay area? I’m a third generation Tampanian. I had been farming up in Pasco County, and I had also purchased this [Sweetwater’s] land. Then, I got involved in the organic certification world, and I had a lot of opportunities for traveling to very far corners of the earth. I was finding that work very fulfilling, but at the same time our little farm here was getting abandoned. I had heard about the Community Supported Agricultural Programs and just thought it was something that might work. . . So that’s how the idea was formed: to www.tampabaywellness.com

We ran into challenges related to zoning and to some of the county utilities. We had a sewer line break in the creek, and that shut down our operations on this farm for a season. Fortunately, at that point, we already had the majority of our production at a different location. If that had happened at a different time, it would have probably killed us. But it happened at a time where the impact wasn’t life-threatening for us from a business perspective. The benefits have really outweighed the challenges.

but we eventually did get sprayed so that impacted us quite a bit. What was the key to success in overcoming that challenge? Community support. That’s been the key to success in overcoming all of our challenges. When did you begin the CSA program? From the beginning we were essentially a CSA model; we just didn’t know it. We had seven families, and there were more than seven families participating because each of those seven families would get orders from their neighbors to bring home a similar bag of produce. At that time we just didn’t know how a CSA was structured, but we were essentially doing the same thing. I think probably in 1997 we actually developed an application for people to join, but we had been on the same model; it just became more formalized as time went on. How many shares were sold in the first year? How was the number determined? How do you determine the number each year? It’s really been by trial and error. We just sold what we thought we could manage, and that was really more of a limit of our financial resources and time resources.

Also, in 1997, there was a medfly outbreak in the Tampa Bay area. That was a big challenge, dealing with this massive malathion spray program throughout our community. . . We were very active during that experience. There was an organization called CRAM (the Citizens for Responsible Alternatives to Malathion) that was formed out of Sweetwater . . . Fortunately, it was in the summer when we didn’t have our edible crops in the ground. They promised us that we would not get sprayed, Tampa Bay Wellness • february 2013 13

coverstory But now that we’ve grown a little bit, it’s become more a limit of our land resources because we’ve really gotten our hands around the financial and the man power resources that it takes to do this. That’s really not our limit; our limit now is having enough land. How did Sweetwater develop during its first and second decades? We started with a very small group of seven families who got together and decided we wanted to do this experiment. That has grown to about 300 families now. In the early decade, it was just a small group and we did all of the work together. There were no employees. Within a short time—I think the following year—we had about 18 families and then the following year after that there were about 40. So it grew pretty quickly and we eventually evolved to having an employee. After that, we acquired another piece of land across the creek and added that to our production area. Eventually, we developed a relationship with Bern’s steakhouse on their farm. Little by little we’ve had to improve our equipment and our infrastructure to facilitate a little bit more of a professional production model. We also have a board of directors. What benefits do consumers enjoy through direct partnerships with farmers? How does this type of consumer relationship differ from others? There are various benefits of that relationship. The top benefit is that you have the opportunity to get food that’s been harvested hours (and sometimes even minutes) ago. There’s nowhere else that you can get food so fresh. And when you start comparing food to some of our other consumer relationships, it may be one of the most essential consumer activities that we have. This is an experience that reaches back to the beginning of time with people collecting food. And this day and age we’ve really become separated from that experience—more so than 14 february 2013 • Tampa Bay Wellness

any other period in human history. I think now really offers a unique opportunity for people to get back to their human roots, to take an active part in the food that’s supplied for their family’s table, and not only to get it fresh, but to participate in that, which is rewarding in a lot of ways for people. And some people get a lot of joy through supporting the nice organization that we have. That’s another part of what people enjoy here: seeing the good work that we do, being a part of that, and helping support that success.

“To me, that is the most valuable part of what we do—the friendships that we have cultivated here.” What are the key components of Sweetwater’s Educational Programs? The primary one for us is the School Field Trip Program. We have upwards of 2,000 children come every year. Over the years there have probably been more than 15,000 children who have participated in the program.

Standards for “Certified Organic” farming To be considered “certified organic” under the Code of Federal Regulations 7 CFR Part 205, products must meet the following standards: – No harmful chemicals have been applied to the land for at least three years. – Farmers and processors are inspected annually by a certifying agency. – Farmers and processors must keep detailed records of practices. – Farmers are required to maintain a written organic management plan. Sweetwater Organic Community Farm and its farm location at The Children’s Home are Certified Organic by Quality Certification Services. www.sweetwater-organic.org Needed at Sweewater’s new farm at The Children’s Home: • Wire for an electrical box • Funds for the roof • Concrete slab (anyone who has a concrete business and wants to donate a little extra concrete at the end of each day is welcome to do so).

We also have our internship and apprenticeship programs, which for me are one of the top priorities as far as training people to become farmers. A dozen of our interns now work in careers in the farming field. We have our workshop series. So we have gardening workshops, workshops on how to make soap and beer, and workshops on how to make many other different things. Those are geared more toward adults. We offer hands-on experience here on the farm, so whenever people come out to volunteer we teach them what they need to be doing for the day, and some of them become more www.tampabaywellness.com

coverstory committed volunteers really for that sole purpose—to learn as much as they can about how to grow food either in their backyards or on a larger scale.

“I think now really offers a unique opportunity for people to get back to their human roots, to take an active part in the food that’s supplied for their family’s table, and not only to get it fresh, but to participate in that, which is rewarding in a lot of ways for people.” And then we have the community outreach. Things like the supper club have been a wonderful experience. We will go out sometimes and speak to different groups that ask us to come and present to different service clubs. We are out there and reaching out as much as we can. What little known habit has made Sweetwater Organic Community Farm successful? The thing that has made Sweetwater successful is the core group within our community who has seen this as an essential need for our Tampa Bay area and have really dedicated themselves to helping Sweetwater be successful. And that group has changed over the years. People come and go. But it’s sort of like crops: you have this rotation of crops and this constant change, and www.tampabaywellness.com

we’ve been fortunate to have this wonderful flow of board members who have dedicated endless hours as well as volunteers and employees who have all made it work. We continue to evolve in a very successful way. How often do you have to turn down membership applications for the CSA program due to having sold the maximum amount? Every year for about the last 10 years. But we don’t particularly turn them down; we try to engage them, get them on our e-mail list, get them coming out to the Sunday Market, and encourage them to sign up early for next year.

One of our board members smartly pegged it: Sweetwater is like a threelegged chair where all three legs are equally important. One is growing organic food, one is educating the public, particularly children, and the other one is creating community. And one isn’t any more important than the others. All three are equal, and if you take one away the chair falls over. That’s what we are, that’s who we are, and that’s who we intend to continue being. Sweetwater Organic Community Farm will host a 20th Anniversary “Farm to Fork Community Celebration” on Sunday, February 10 from 5:00-10:00 PM at The Samba Room on South Howard Avenue in Tampa. Tickets ($50) include farm-inspired food created with freshly harvested organic vegetables and two drink tickets for craft beer or wine (cocktails available at the cash bar). Visit http://sweetwaterorganic.org/ to purchase tickets.

What are the Sweetwater Farm’s short- and long-term plans? Our plans are to continue our important work—in the short term to grow wonderful crops and to be a venue for families to enjoy themselves on Sundays as well as a venue for children and adults to learn. Our long-term plan is to try and build our business model into an economically sustainable business model so that this can be here for generations to come.

hat is ‘Hypnopuncture’? This revolutionary treatment uses hypnosis simultaneously combined with Acupuncture to facilitate optimal wellness and ideal weight balance through harmonious integration of mind and body. At Tampa Bay MindSpa Wellness Center Certified Medical Support Hypnotherapist Sherri Hanner, CMS and Licensed Florida Acupuncture Physicians Dr. Twyla Philips and Dr. Cynthia Clark work in concert to help clients achieve their ideal weight using Hypnopuncture, Chinese Herbal Formulas and nutritional counseling in an eight week wellness program uniquely designed to regulate metabolism, balance weight, improve digestive function and overall immunity for their clients. How can Acupuncture help me get to my ideal weight? Acupuncture remains one of the most ancient and widely used medical systems, relying on using the body’s natural ‘Qi’ or innate energy to correct disease causing imbalances. A major tenet of Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine is the unity between body and mind: ‘In order to make Acupuncture 16 february 2013 • Tampa Bay Wellness

effective, one must first cure the mind’. This saying, taken from an ancient, centuries old Chinese Acupuncture text (The Nei Ching Su Wen) reveals the superior importance of integrating both mental and physical practice to achieve healthy balance and wellness. Modern research reveals needling specific ‘points’ on the body releases endorphins, or natural stress reducing, relaxation inducing neurotransmitters in the brain and other parts of the body’s nervous system. Using points on the ear, or auricular acupuncture has been found to be very effective for reducing unwanted pounds. Just as acupuncture treatments can eliminate substance abuse and other addictive cravings, needling also helps reduce the urge to overeat by balancing the digestive system as irregular eating habits including binge eating due to stress and anxiety. Fad dieting and snacking can all contribute to slowing metabolism and disrupting thyroid function. Without proper digestion, weight loss can be challenging. The accumulation of toxins associated with the consumption of unhealthy fats, sugar and carbohydrates are known contributors to inflammation, fatigue, skin eruptions and

even depression as the internal organs slow down and malfunction. Major energy pathways (called meridians) governing major organ systems are considered to be either sluggish or overactive with weight gain. Treating specific points along the meridians balances, improves, strengthens and optimizes overall organ function. Acupuncture increases metabolism by stimulating endocrine function, harmonizing digestion in the stomach and intestines and stabilizing blood sugar levels, thereby assisting the body to naturally rid itself of toxins. It is very well known Acupuncture treatment induces a state of progressive relaxation, what might even be called a light hypnotic state. With slowed, deeper breathing, a sense of calm and centeredness and feelings of lethargy creating an ideal condition, a kind of hypno-analgesia to more effectively facilitate actual real-time hypnosis. When your mind is relaxed, you are more open to the power of suggestion. What is hypnosis and how does it work for weight loss? Hypnosis can perhaps best be described as reinforcing positive beliefs and attitudes by www.tampabaywellness.com

changing the way we feel, sense, think and act using the unconscious mind or ‘mental muscles’ to accomplish amazing goals. Achieving ideal weight occurs when unconscious resistance to healthier habits and modifying behavior is addressed with hypnosis. Hypnosis helps identify and address deeply held psychological reasons and issues contributing to weight gain buried in the sub-conscious mind. Most of us have experienced hypnosis whether we know it or not. Losing track of time while engrossed in a movie or while driving a car deep in thought and not knowing how you got to your destination are all forms of hypnotic or ‘trance’ states. During this perfectly natural, relaxed but altered state of mind (or so-called ‘auto pilot’) focused, selective thinking is established even without our conscious awareness of this occurrence. Around the age of six or seven, what is termed the ‘critical factor’ or gatekeeper of the subconscious mind develops. In other words, as we grow into adulthood, our new information and experiences are constantly being compared with these past beliefs and ideas accumulated in the subconscious mind before age seven. Relaxing the ‘critical factor’ allows new ideas and suggestions to enter and be accepted into the subconscious mind. Selective thinking then occurs. The process of selective thinking is an increased mental involvement with the ideas

being presented, as this ability to hold an exclusive thought makes it easier to communicate more accurately and more effectively with the subconscious mind. Most food cravings are strongest when one’s emotional well- being is imbalanced. When faced with emotional discomfort, some individuals -- consciously or subconsciously -- consume comfort foods, or foods that temporarily ease the burden of emotional distress. For some people, consuming comfort foods is a form of distraction from the pain and negative emotions that they might be feeling. Some people hold on to weight as a protective shield in order to subconsciously or consciously avoid unwanted sexual attention, possibly due to past sexual abuse. Common signs and symptoms associated with emotional “comfort” eating aside from unwanted weight gain can and often include withdrawing from friends and family and decreased physical activity. There are several triggers to emotional or “comfort” eating, including health and relationship issues, self esteem, unemployment, abuse, boredom, depression, anxiety, stress, depression, and grief and loss issues. There are many possible underlying factors as to why one holds on to excess weight. the body

By Arielle Giordano

BORN TO DANCE As humans, we were born to dance. Since ancient times, dance has been an important part of our identities.

T

housands of years ago, one tribe member asked another, “What do you dance?”

Dance, which was once our human signature, has now been replaced by images and videos on our Facebook pages as society’s method to define our social identity. Dance and movement allow us to be aware in our bodies and physically present to shift in new ways. Through these movements, we are teaching ourselves new patterns and ways to function. On a mental level, dance allows us to release the challenges, stresses, and dramas of our everyday lives and replace them with freeing thoughts. Emotionally, dance helps to create new brain patterns by breaking down old ingrained feelings, and spiritually we get to express ourselves in creative ways. Through enjoying and relaxing into the body, you can go deeper within your being. You can feel all parts of your body and experience its vulnerability. Being in the body and the expression of it assists in the shifting and healing of physical cellular structures. This movement has the ability to set into action previously unknown and unseen thoughts and feelings. As a result, insights, awareness, and experiences have an opportunity to come into conscious awareness. 20 february 2013 • Tampa Bay Wellness

You begin to dance from the inside out! Dance is an unspoken universal language of the whole body, and it is an integral aspect of the universal mind. Dance consciousness is the graceful state of being and movement inherent within all sentient beings because it provides an opportunity to express the highest within all forms of existence. As everything in the universe dances, you dance with it. As humans, we flow, we pulse, we harmonize, we integrate. We are dancing beings. Dance is a form of body language that expresses itself in unique ways through the instrument of the body, which has the ability to open your heart and touch the soul. The body has the awareness to let you see and move into new internal spaces. Set it free to explore your hidden qualities and new ways of experiencing the world. This universal impulse to move, which we now call “dance,” exists today just as it did millions of years ago. In cultures both past and present, dance has been integrated into ceremonies for weddings, funerals, courting, instruction, storytelling, healing, arousal, amusement, entertainment, exercise, fun, uplifting the spirit, paying homage to gods and goddesses, and seeking and attaining aesthetic beauty that

cannot be put into words. This devotion of dance has transformational powers of transcendence to inspire and awaken the soul and the spirit of your being. It is an invitation into your own body’s awareness to move in time and space and enjoy being in physical form. From here you can explore other areas within yourself, such as how you feel moving a particular body part, what you are thinking, as well as your feelings, stresses, and perspectives. Everything that you have ever experienced is housed within your body. It is the inn/storekeeper for your life, challenges, experiences, joys, and sorrows. Here five ways you can focus on using dance to heal and help you to look and feel better: 1. Release Old Patterns As you use dance to become more aware of being in your body, notice that each movement has within it the potential to release hidden thoughts, feelings, insights, and awareness. All people have old crusty patterns that they replay everyday, and those patterns can be moved into conscious awareness and transmuted through dance. You have the ability to become that movement, that expression of your body, and you can use it to discover who you are as a being

and uncover your own uniqueness through creative expression. Just take a moment and look around. We live in a moving universe. Everything is in constant motion. From the minute you are born to the moment you die, your cells are moving and dancing within you. 2. Focus on Posture Posture is very important in dance. If you watch the television show “Dancing with the Stars,” notice how often you hear the word posture. Here are some tips for improving your stance: stand tall with tummy tucked in and under. If you look at yourself in the mirror you will be straight and your shoulders, hips, and ankles will be in alignment. Shoulders are down and slightly pressed back. Tuck your bottom underneath your spine. Then take a deep breath, belly in, shoulders up and down, and bottom tucked under the spine. Center your body weight in a standing position. Do not lean forward or backward. Warning: You may look 10 pounds lighter with your new posture! 3. Create Brain Activity Dancing stimulates brain activity and function, and it can even prevent Alzheimer’s disease. Dance prevents Alzheimer’s disease because of the activation and stimulation of the brain cortex www.tampabaywellness.com

and hemisphere called the Action Observation Network. In What Can Dance Teach Us About Learning, by Scott T. Grafton M.D., he points out that we might begin to learn a dance step when someone describes it to us, but we learn it better when we physically perform the steps as we observe and imitate an instructor doing them. You must use your brain to dance and follow the steps. Listen, watch, focus, observe, and consciously process information at the same time you are moving your body and following another’s example. The neurons in your brain imitate an instructor with observation learning when taking a dance lesson, it creates new neural pathways. 4. Generate Physical Energy A fun activity such as dance stimulates the body and the endorphins in the brain. This movement creates more overall physical, mental, emotional, and even spiritual activity. It is the first step in having more energy, motivation, and focus, which can be directed to successfully complete mental tasks, especially for people who have attention challenges (such as myself). Enjoy the process of you. Give yourself per-

www.tampabaywellness.com

mission to allow your dance to awaken the potential within. Let new elements and qualities express and move through your body. It is not about “getting the moves right.” This is about the expression of you dancing through your body. This is the about your dance, your story, your journey of life. Relax, enjoy, and be free to experience uninhibited movement. Be the flow within you as you dance, and let your dance become your life! Be the flow within you as you dance and let your dance become your life!

5. Feel Good about Yourself The more expressive movement allows you to be who you truly are and the more fully present you are in your own unique dance, the better you will look and feel. Feeling good about yourself is rooted within a balance of the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual bodies—which are all interconnected with each step you take. As you heal and grow in your inner and outer dance, you begin to glow in our own flow! As your inner beauty glows, it shows in your body and so does your-self-confidence!!

the mind

By Robert Holden

Love is Your Destiny The following is an excerpt from Loveability: Knowing How to Love and Be Loved by Robert Holden, published by Hay House, available March 1, 2013, in bookstores or at www.hayhouse.com.

Looking for love is hell. Everyone’s been there. We’ve all done it. It’s a mindset you identify with when you forget who you are and what love is. It’s what you do when you experience the fall from grace and you fear that love has abandoned you. In this hell, you search for love outside of yourself. The searching leads you to believe that you exist outside of love. You act as if you and love are two separate things. You think the purpose of the world is to find love, and then, once you find it, not to lose it again.

“I’m looking for love,” said Evelyne, as she moved around in her chair, trying to get comfortable. “How is it going?” I asked. “Not great,” she said. “How long have you been looking?” I asked. “About four years now,” she said, trying to smile. “But it feels a lot longer than that.” “How much longer?” “Too long,” she sighed, her eyes flitting around my office. “That’s a long time to be searching for love.” “Yes.” “Evelyne, have you ever considered giving up the search?” “Oh, plenty of times,” she laughed. Conversations with Evelyne were full of jousting and play. She had a stoic sense of humor, which I enjoyed very much, but I chose not to laugh with her this time. What we were talking about was too precious to run away from. So I fixed my eyes on Evelyne’s eyes and very deliberately asked her again, “Evelyne, have you ever thought about giving up the search?” “What do you mean?” she asked. “The way I see it,” I said, “looking for love is blocking you from finding love.” “Say that again,” she said. “Looking for love is stopping you from finding love.” “So what do you suggest?” “Stop looking for love.” 22 february 2013 • Tampa Bay Wellness

Looking for love is frightening. That’s because it’s a strategy used to conceal a most terrible fear you would rather not look at: the fear that I am not loveable. I refer to this fear as the basic fear because we all experience it, and also because it gives rise to every other fear. This fear is not real, but you don’t know that if you’re too scared to look at it. So, you decide to leave yourself alone, and you start looking for someone who will find you loveable. This is just as scary, though. Where will you find this person? Are they still available? What if they are gay, or not gay? Do they even exist? Okay, maybe they do exist, but what are the chances of them loving you if you don’t love you? Looking for love is painful. You are looking for love because you have judged yourself to be unloveable. Until you change your mind about yourself, your only hope is to find someone who will overturn this judgment. So you try to create a pleasing image that hides the pain of feeling unloveable. This image knows how to be seductive, to attract attention, and to win admiration, but because it is not the real you, it does not attract real love. Therefore, you keep on looking, but because you won’t change your mind about yourself, all you find is your own lovelessness. It’s difficult to believe in love when you are looking for love. The more you keep looking, the more unloveable you feel. Because you don’t believe you are loveable, you can’t believe it’s possible for someone to love you. Eventually, you begin to doubt if love even exists. This is the worst pain of all. To believe that and to keep on living is impossible. Now you are just a shadow of yourself. You have reached a dead end. Looking for love hasn’t worked. So now it’s time to try something else. And that’s a good thing. Love is an inner journey home. The way to get there is to start here, right where you are now. The goal of this journey is not to find love; it is to know love. This knowledge exists in you already. I call this knowledge loveability.

Yoga as Medicine for Cancer Learning to Live Life One Breath at a Time

T

he simplicity of the breath. The first real movement at birth and the last before we pass. The breath is akin to a lifelong friend that we sometimes forget to nurture and support. Yet the breath feeds the soul better than any complex asana (pose). For a cancer patient, this is often a relief to find out. It is all too common for me to talk with a cancer patient who expresses an interest in yoga but says “There is no way I could do yoga. I cannot get into those crazy positions.” I gently respond that they don’t have to worry about the poses but to just “find your breath and you will receive one of the most beautiful gifts of yoga.” While I am not someone who has been diagnosed with cancer, I have experienced the journey through cancer closely with a childhood friend and a family member. I have known of the many doctors’ appointments, the tests, the treatments, the waiting for PET scan results, etc. It seems to be a journey that at times can be all too consuming mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Yoga can help to ease these times of overwhelming challenges. 24 february 2013 • Tampa Bay Wellness

Yoga for cancer has evolved as part of an approach to medical care called “integrative medicine.” Integrative medicine is an approach to medical care in which patient and treating practitioners from all specialties come together as a team to treat the whole person; mind, body and spirit. This integrative approach uses yoga, meditation, acupuncture, reiki, music therapy, and massage as a complementary treatment to conventional medical care. Now you will find integrative medicine centers used all around the country. Institutions such as MD Anderson Center, Mayo Clinic, Sloan-Kettering, Duke Integrative Medicine Center, and Moffitt Cancer Center, to name only a few, have developed integrative medicine centers. The yoga community has gained a significant amount of recognition from the conventional medical field in large part due to empirically-based findings of the research community. Numerous studies have demonstrated that yoga has the potential to help cancer patients by reducing fatigue, nausea, insomnia, depression, anxiety, pain, and improving immune system function

and overall quality of life. Of significance, in 2010 MD Anderson received a $4.5 million grant to study the effects of yoga on cancer patients. This is the largest grant ever awarded by the National Cancer Institute to study yoga and cancer. While empirical research is important in advancing integrative oncology, one can witness the benefits of yoga merely from working one on one with a cancer patient. A client “Debra” came to me for help after undergoing treatment for esophageal cancer. This student was post-surgical treatment and experiencing extreme anxiety while waiting to undergo another PET scan. “Debra” expressed enthusiastically after her yoga practice that she had experienced feeling sensation in her feet which she had not had for weeks. Further, she said that her anxiety and constant worrying had significantly decreased. Other patients I know have practiced breathwork (pranayama) while waiting to undergo radiation treatment and as a result they were able to complete their treatment with less anxiety. Moreover, patients report that learning to meditate gives them relief www.tampabaywellness.com

from nausea and fatigue. Finally, others explain that yoga has enabled them to embrace their body completely as it is with gratitude and self-acceptance rather than with resentment and self-deprecation. Yoga has even more to offer. On a physical level, yoga helps to clear out toxins accrued during cancer treatment. Yoga poses cause muscular contraction which helps to release lymphatic fluid. Lymphatic fluid assists in removing toxins from the body. Additionally, yoga poses increase blood flow and help to balance the glandular system. These physiological effects purify the body which in turn boosts the immune system. Also, yoga helps improve muscle strength and increases range of motion in the joints. Keeping the joints active circulates synovial fluid to the joints which prevents deterioration and a sedentary lifestyle. On a mental level, breathwork and meditation can create an overall feeling of calm and inner peace. Breathwork is key to cultivating this state of being. The breath, on exhalation, activates the

parasympathetic nervous system responsible for relaxation. The heart rate slows, muscle tension releases, and stress levels go down. Moreover, at the end of an exhale, there is a subtle pause where stillness quietly resides. For cancer patients, just to sit and breathe into a deep exhalation can bring serenity not felt for quite some time. In this sense, the breath is a gift. Additionally, meditation through mindfulness practice can teach a student how to quiet the mind. Mindfulness practice allows the student to experience the feeling of being fully alive in the present moment, without worry about the past and without worry about the future. The student directs their thoughts to the fact that they are in a yoga class; they are not receiving a treatment; they are not calling physicians’ offices. This ability to deeply embody mindful living can bring liberation from the often overwhelming responsibilities of this disease. On an emotional level, a yoga for cancer class creates a sense of community support which can help a cancer patient find

connection and belonging. This feeling of togetherness can bring a little more light to someone who may be feeling dark and alone. A yoga class can also cultivate a place of authentic being which can lead to spiritual growth and awakening to one’s highest purpose and most precious gifts in life. In some ways the practice of yoga is a coming home to a place of inner wisdom where deep healing can occur physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. This can be a beautiful time for self-empowerment and self-nurturing. In essence, a time for reclaiming the peace within that may have been lost but is always there for us when we can learn to live life one breath at a time.

Combining The Past, Present and Future to Create the Now Experience

life threatening condition and since Jillian’s children meant more to her then life itself, naturally she was having a difficult time functioning with idea of possibly losing her son. As I counseled her through each and every part of her son’s illness we worked at staying in the present, where her son Brad was living, fighting his illness and still very much alive. As I directed her through Brad’s diagnosis and treatment, with each step we stayed in the present. This brought her comfort to know Brad was with us and thriving, without wandering off into the uncertainty of the future. This held Jillian over throughout each hurdle of her son’s illness until his recovery. Today I am happy to report that Brad’s condition is in remission and he is living an active life and Jillian, again is focusing on the present and not drifting off either into the past where Brad was sick or the future and the fears of a relapse. There is no need for Jillian to go back into the painful experience this experience ceases to exist except for in a memory and certainly there is no need for her to travel into the future and into the slight chance that Brad may be sick again. Staying in the now keeps her safe, secure and happy.

n order to stay on the Lightworker course you need to understand the meaning of being present time orientated. A Lightworker who is not focused in the present becomes trapped and fearful. Within the universe there really is no time. Since the universe is complete, past, present and future all co-exist harmoniously. The past and the future were created to measure the human understanding of life. In reality universal time is always in the present all things happening simultaneously. Are there ways to combine the past, present and future to create an improved “now” experience? It is in the present where you can shape your purpose and bring yourself to your fullest potential. By mixing the best of all three zones we are our most empowered selves. Being present is not as easy as it seems, since we tend to develop behavior patterns that either recreate the past or create obstacles for our future. You will find if you’re stuck in the past, either nostalgia of the good old days or carrying the pain or trauma from events gone by you will become trapped and unable to move forward. Conversely, if you are too future orientated, you will find that you will form attachments to certain outcomes which may not suit you when you eventually reach your destination. Living in the now is an empowering way to create your existence. It releases you from the past and allows you to feel secure in the knowing of what is ongoing; of course if you’re in the present time, there are no uncertainties or fears of what is to be. Take for example my client Jillian who was going through a major life challenge. Her eldest son Brad contracted a

.When we experience painful or traumatic events a condition called soul fragmentation can occur. We have all heard the expression, “When he left, he took a piece of me with him” or “What happened just broke my heart” there is real meaning behind these phrases and we can literally become broken or fragmented spiritually when we experience pain or trauma. The goal is to retrieve the missing fragments (or shards) of our soul to become whole once more. When our spirits are created, they are whole, complete and undamaged. As we live our incarnations, we can lose pieces of ourselves along the way for any number of reasons. This leaves a void and creates a feeling of emptiness where that missing piece of us should be. There is a process called “Soul Retrieval” where one must literally go back in time and retrieve the missing pieces. Soul Retrieval is the recovery of soul fragments that have been left or lost somewhere, or that were stolen or borrowed by somebody else. The objective is to make the person more whole and bring that missing piece into the present. Soul Retrieval originates in ancient shamanic practices. American Indians would do it in drumming ceremonies where the shaman would travel off into the past and find the part of the person that was missing and bring it back into the present. You don’t need a Shaman to practice Soul Retrieval; you can do it yourself quite simply. Many people can easily recall during meditation or even self-hypnosis where their shard may be, and then time travel to find it. Look at it this way, perhaps ten years ago you felt on top of the world, after a string of painful events you lost all your self-esteem and confidence. Soul Retrieval allows you to go into the past and identify the situations and people that contributed to your loss and take back the missing pieces. It is amazing where my clients find their shards. Some may find them in the pockets of people they once knew; others may locate a shard in a cupboard of their childhood home. First and foremost you must identify what is truly missing. Certain expressions can help you identify your missing shard. If you use any of the following expressions, it may be an indicator of what you need to retrieve. •I lost my innocence when that happened •He took a piece of my heart •I don’t have the strength I had when I was twenty •She robbed me of my dignity •She took away any hope I once had www.tampabaywellness.com

•They took away my authority •My father robbed me of my self esteem •He took my childhood from me •That home holds all my happy memories •My sense of security went out the window You get the idea. So listen carefully to the expressions you use and this will give you many clues as to what you need to retrieve and from who or where. Your shard is out there, waiting to fit into the missing slot, Like a shattered mirror, by replacing the missing pieces, Soul Retrieval will assist in seeing your true self once again and become whole and present.

Being Too Forward Thinking

We tend to want to be more, or feel we should be doing more than we are currently, holding ourselves to the ideals of others or comparisons to others. But in actuality, we are doing exactly as we should be. Understanding that everything occurs in divine timing will allow you to accept where you are currently and move forward from that point. Taking the pressure off of what the future holds is an empowering feeling. Imagine living each day with the knowledge that you are exactly where you should be and always will be. As we move into the future feeling divinely guided we begin to feel filled with promise and relieved to know that the future is now, occurring as you read this sentence!

Future Life Progression

FLP is like stepping into the future and getting all the wisdom of an experience that is yet to come. It is a therapeutic technique in which information from your future life is revealed, reviewed and integrated into the present. You can also sample alternate futures, or play out different outcomes to future situations which will enable you to make decisions with the benefit of foresight. FLP allows you to see into your future - you can see your relationships, career or health path, the place you live in or anything that you choose to focus on during your time travel. Understanding that the past, present, and future exist in the same now experience helps to comprehend how you can access all the possibilities of what is to come in your life. Since all events are ongoing, it’s kind of like remembering; remembering the future that is. You can practice FLP with the help of a Hypnotist or learn techniques to do it yourself, but in my experiences with clients, many times it does occur spontaneously or unprompted. We can recognize this kind of FLP when we repeatedly dream of a situation we have never been in, are drawn to particular names, develop a certain attachment to a place or person for reasons that seem to make no sense for you. For years my client Sarah began hearing the name Michael Anthony, it started when she was just fourteen. There was a young boy she had a crush on by the name, but as she became an adult, she would see the name on store fronts, street signs and sometimes even in the phone book. She thought,” well it’s a common name, but there it is again”. She began to really take notice one day when she saw the name while browsing an internet dating site she had joined a year earlier. “Oh but this Michael lived 1500 miles away in Florida” she thought. There would be no chance to meet or have a relationship with this Michael Anthony. She wrote it off as a weird coincidence. Two weeks later she received a note in her inbox from Michael Anthony of Florida! Turns out he felt drawn to her profile and even though she was “geographically undesirable” he thought, “What’s the harm in making a new friend?” and messaged her. It didn’t take long before Sarah was packing up and moving to Florida to be with her fiancé Michael. Never forgetting how she always seemed to come across the name, she now understood the connection. www.tampabaywellness.com

Placing the Future in the Present

Another way of putting the future into the present without feeling pressured is to create a vision board: Using a vision board to attract the future you desire is one way of staying present orientated and still work on your manifestation for the future. A vision board is simply a visual representation of the things that you want to have, be, or do in your life. It simply consists of poster or cork board where you can tack or tape images of your goals. The purpose of this is to create a pictorial to set into motion the energies that will actually draw these things into your life. If you would like a stable happy relationship, you may want to clip a magazine image to represent that, such as two lovers strolling on the beach. If your goal is to lose weight, perhaps you can find an image of a person who is of ideal weight and glows in the peak of health. All these images will activate the law of attraction and as you begin to move forward carrying these images in your mind and manifesting them into your life. Points To Remember: •The concept of time does not exists in the Universe •You can retrieve parts of yourself from the past to feel whole in the present •You can envision, experience and change your future now •Remaining in the pain or happiness of the past paralyzes us in the present •Be flexible when attaching yourself to future goals or outcomes. The outcome you envision may not suit you when arrive there •Being too future orientated creates fear, uncertainty and anxiety •By combining all three time zones (past, present and future) we are most empowered.

TAURUS The denser something is, the harder it is to move. Right now, it serves your better interests to lighten up. Be open towards the feelings of others and be also generous. Before you take action, make sure you are well organized. Do not ignore matters that must be attended to. Align your heart with what you feel is true and you cannot go wrong. The one thing you cannot do is stay still.

VIRGO

Contemplation is your ally. Courageously and quietly take a deeper look at your life, the direction it is headed and the potentials that perhaps lie hidden from your view buried deep within it. Seek to justify your point of view no more, particularly to yourself. Instead, daringly reach out to smash old habits and patterns of living your life the same way and expecting different results. It does not work.

Poor habits are not your friend and enough with inwardly justifying poor responses to living your life to the fullest. If you are hanging on to anything as this fresh new time begins, step back and give it the old heave ho. Nourishing is the key world for the year for you. Make no mistake--action is THE preferred strategy of choice for you. It is the only thing that can prove you heard yourself.

You now have an opportunity to shift any stagnant situation to one of progress and order. Take note of any useful insights or ideas and put a few to the test. Do not doubt your inner vision and keep your methods clean and your integrity intact. Remove yourself from any situation that is exhibiting conflict or insensitivity. There is little time for that now. Self-reliance is your best ally.

Live and learn as they say and no moment is like the present! With those adages in mind it is time to step into potentially greener pastures. Evaluate and then construct at least four goals you feel are useful to get you to the next level of growth. For you, your relationship to what you think is important will tend to fluctuate and reformulate yourself as you go deeper into 2013. Go with the flow and take a paddle.

GEMINI Moderation is crucial in all matters. Slow down in expenses, projects and socializing. Best to take some time out and contemplate your current direction. Be open to engaging in conversations with new acquaintances. Evaluate goals relative to how best they fit both giving and receiving. With a certain level of modesty and discipline all things can take on a golden hue of opportunity!

LIBRA Inexperience could actually be an ally. There are new situations coming your way. Beginner’s luck can play a role as well as maintaining an air of innocence about it all. Focus on developing a true appreciation for people, places and events in general. As you reconcile your own internal differences you can find those on the external become far more charming.

AQUARIUS There can be an impressive amount of letting go you may be called to do over the coming month. Nurture your body, mind and spirit by clearing out and up your space. Look for inner wisdom and adapt as best as you can to any sudden changes or shifts in your world. In certain situations it is best to wait and see. Not for you, not for this time. Clear out and move on. Giddyup!

CANCER Adaptation is a crucial keyword for the month. Try to limit insecurities and seek to make progress by being willing to modify points of view as well as attitudes and approaches. Look beyond and into the appearance of any situation for its deeper truth or meaning. Change is occurring around you and within you and this will be true for some years to come. Move with it!

SCORPIO It is time to quietly accept certain situations within your life. Some of your intentions may not be in harmony with the larger direction of your life. Take the time now to stop, look and listen. If you are convinced you are seeing accurately then move ahead. Choices are of utmost importance so take the time to choose wisely.

PISCES New beginnings can often be misconstrued as difficult and this is just plain unfair. Cut to the chase of any confusion and follow the road that feels most harmonious. Tell any critics to shush and keep a sharp eye out for any inner resistance that may hold you back. Concentrate, focus and smile. It will all work to your betterment.
