T

he world’s largest and most prestigious nurse credentialing organization has once again presented its highest designation for quality nursing care to Tampa General Hospital. It is the second time that Tampa General has received the Magnet Award for excellence in nursing. The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), a subsidiary of the American Nurses Association, notified Tampa General Monday that it had approved the hospital’s designation as a magnet hospital. The Magnet Award recognizes hospitals that demonstrate excellence in nursing philosophy and practices, adherence to national standards for improving patient care, leadership, and sensitivity to cultural and ethnic diversity. The ANCC website (http://www.nursecredentialing.org/Magnet/ProgramOverview.aspx) states: “Recognizing quality patient care, nursing excellence, and innovations in professional nursing practice, the Magnet Recognition Program provides consumers with

the ultimate benchmark to measure the quality of care that they can expect to receive.” Magnet status lasts for four years. Tampa General, which earned the distinction in 2005, submitted a lengthy application for its second designation that included a four day site visit by a team of graduate degree trained registered nurses. That survey team reviewed thousands of pages of documentation and conducted personal interviews with staff and patients. Achieving magnet status is a difficult task: Only 346 of the country’s 5,815 hospitals (less than 6 percent) are designated magnet hospitals. Florida has the second highest concentration of magnet hospitals with 22, one less than New Jersey. Some states have no magnet hospitals. Kathi Sengin, chief nursing officer at TGH, said achieving Magnet status “symbolizes our commitment to creating an environment that fosters patient safety, collaborative practice and teamwork, resulting in excellent patient care.”

ALL CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL MOVES TO NEW BUILDING Getting large groups of children safely from one place to another is never an easy task. But this past January, the region’s experts in pediatric care moved 169 hospitalized infants and children - along with the high-tech equipment needed to provide their ICU level care - from its 42-year old landmark facility to a brand new All Children’s Hospital. And it only took six hours.

air conditioning) for up to three weeks in the event of a disaster or power interruption. Altogether, they comprise one of the largest commercial construction projects in Florida. The new hospital and its neighboring Outpatient Care Center provide nearly a million square feet of space devoted to pediatric health care. Virtually all

of the hospital’s 259 licensed beds are in individual rooms. Other key features of the new hospital include the 97-bed All Children’s Hospital Guild Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Occupying an entire floor of the new hospital, the NICU is one of the largest in the southeastern United States. It was made possible by a $4-million gift from the Hospital’s nine Guild branches across Florida’s Suncoast.

All totaled, some 800 All Children’s staff members participated in the move, including employees who volunteered their Saturday to accomplish the move. Ten All Children’s physicians manned positions along the move route to address any concerns or emergencies. And more than fifty volunteers from local fire and police departments provided extra muscle to push beds and often heavy equipment needed to support these young patients as they made their way along the move route. The same skilled staff who’ve established All Children’s reputation for high-tech/high-touch care now have a new, more spacious and efficient setting for their work. The ten-story replacement hospital is the central focus of All Children’s $403-million construction project. Other elements include a seven-story Outpatient Care Center, a 700-space Visitor Parking Garage and a Central Energy Plant designed to keep the hospital fully functional (with 10 FEBRUARY 2010 • Tampa Bay WELLNESS

wellness news Gastroenterologists Study Mind-body Techniques for Treating Celiac Disease Celiac disease is a lifelong, digestive disease affecting children and adults. People who have celiac disease cannot tolerate gluten, a protein found in almost all food products as well as medicines, vitamins and lip balms. Gluten can damage the small intestine and interfere with absorption of nutrients from food. “Eating even a small amount of gluten can damage the small intestine,” said Dr. Ali Keshavarzian, vice chairman of medicine and gastroenterologist at Rush. “The damage will occur in anyone with the disease, including people without noticeable symptoms.” Hidden sources of gluten are sometimes additives such as modified food starch, preservatives and stabilizers made with wheat. Also, many corn and rice products are produced in factories that also manufacture wheat products, and can be contaminated with wheat gluten. In order to heal existing intestinal damage and prevent further damage, individuals diagnosed with Celiac disease must avoid gluten for the rest of their lives. Patients have to be trained by a health professional on how to read ingredient lists and identify foods that contain gluten in order to make informed decisions when grocery shopping or eating out. “Going to restaurants or dinner at a friend’s house can pose dangers to a person with celiac disease,” said Keshavarzian. “It can really impact a person’s quality of life.” For most people, following a gluten-free diet will stop symptoms, heal existing intestinal damage, and prevent further damage. Improvement begins within days of starting the diet. The small intestine usually heals in three- to six-months in children but may take several years in adults. A healed intestine means a person now has villi that can absorb nutrients from food into the bloodstream.

Crucial Differences Found Among Latino Populations Facing Heart Disease Risks; Not All Hispanics Are The Same

L

atinos are not all the same when it comes to risk of heart disease, and a new study by a Columbia University researcher shows key differences among Hispanic populations that doctors should take into account in trying to stem the risk of cardiovascular disease in this large and growing subset of the U.S. population. Among the new findings published in the January 19, 2009 Journal of the American College of Cardiology are that Caribbean-origin Hispanics have greater prevalence of hypertension than Mexicans, whom among all the Hispanic subgroups tended to be more susceptible to diabetes, lead cardiologist/researcher Carlos Rodriguez, M.D., MPH, of Columbia University Medical Center and his colleagues have found. Hispanics are the largest minority ethnic group in the United States, numbering 46 million people or 16 percent of the U.S. population. Sixty-seven percent of Hispanics in the United States are of Mexican origin, 19 percent come from the Caribbean (principally from

Puerto Rico, Cuba, and the Dominican Republic), and 14 percent originate from Central and South America, according to federal data. The study examined left-ventricular hypertrophy and cardiac “remodeling” patterns with the help of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in Hispanic subgroups compared with non-Hispanic whites participating in the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis or MESA, which was conducted in six cities across the United States. Dr. Rodriguez conducted this research as a scholar with the Harold Amos Medical Faculty Development Program, a national program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. “When considering heart disease in minority populations, it is important for doctors to weigh crucial distinctions among Hispanic groups,” Dr. Rodriguez says. “We need to better appreciate, understand and address differences among Hispanic ethnic subgroups to prevent adverse cardiovascular events in this population.” www.newswise.com

Patients enrolled into the Celiac disease and mind/ body study at Rush will be randomly assigned to two course assignments for eight weeks. Patients eligible for the study must be over 18 years of age, have received a diagnosis of celiac disease in the past four weeks or within two weeks of starting a gluten-free diet, and have not previously attempted a gluten-free diet. - www.sciencedaily.com

MANY STROKE SURVIVORS QUIT USING PREVENTIVE MEDS WITHIN TWO YEARS Only half to three-fourths of stroke survivors who left the hospital were still using a preventive drug two years later, according to a large study of Swedish patients published in Stroke: Journal of the American Heart Association. “To prevent new cardiovascular events after stroke, preventive drugs should be used continuously. Yet, the proportion of patients who were persistent users of drugs prescribed at discharge from hospital declined steadily over the first two years,” said Eva-Lotta Glader, M.D., Ph.D., lead investigator of the study and stroke unit physician at the Umeå University Hospital in Umeå, Sweden. In a study of 21,077 patients (average age 75) from a national stroke registry, the researchers found that after two years: • 74 percent were taking anti-hypertensive drugs;

Furthermore, institutionalized patients, women, those with other serious illnesses and those with family support, were more likely to continue their medications at two years. In contrast, those who perceived their health to be poor and those with “low mood” tended to be less likely to be on their medications. In the observational study, the researchers linked a one-year cohort of patients from Riks-Stroke, the Swedish Stroke Register, to the Swedish Prescribed Drug Register. During the two-year follow-up, patients’ filled prescriptions were recorded. “Secondary prevention treatment declines rapidly during the first two years after stroke, particularly so for statins and warfarin,” the scientists wrote. “Effective interventions to improve persistent secondary prevention after stroke need to be developed.”

• 56 percent were taking cholesterol-lowering “statin” drugs;

Glader said she strongly believes that the United States has the same problem with patients discontinuing their medications.

• 64 percent were taking

Spinal Stenosis?

IN MY OPINION have to go to Harvard to understand that the answer is yes. Now, a rational disclaimer would be to make sure the reader understands that of course you have to have a real approach and make sure that everyone understands there are real medical conditions that need medical help, and that you cannot equate the rapid, very sad decline of our health to good emergency medical intervention.

If you have severe chronic back pain, you may have been told… Take more and more pills Stop bending. • Stretch • Go to therapy • Do your exercises • Stop doing all those things you love to do • Try injections • Have surgery or just live with it. • •

How do you correlate the flat foot to poor digestion, and headaches? Remember that this is a general comment on the deteriorating health of our country, not a substitute for good medical differential diagnosis.

How Many Solutions Have You Tried? First we have the belts, braces, pillows, beds, seats and seat cushions they sell on late night T.V. Then there are the exercises and stretching books, tapes and dvd’s. Finally we have the exercises, drugs and surgeries that range from ineffective to out right risky. Potential Good News… It appears that there is a technology that is available in a small % of doctors offices. This practically unknown and under utilized treatment is used for chronic back and neck pain cases and patients who suffer from herniated, bulging and slipped discs. It is also used in cases with arthritis and degenerative back conditions, Free Guide Helps Back Pain Sufferers Discover A Potential Non-Surgical Option In a effort to provide hope for you and others, there is the “The Severe Back, Sciatica, And Disc Pain Guide.” To receive your copy free, call

Flat feet, Knee Pain, Digestion, Scoliosis, Depression, ADD & Headaches: THE HEALTHCARE DEBATE

I

titled this article this way for a reason. In lieu of writing about each individual diagnosis, it will be fun to lump everything together. Why? Because as the healthcare debate churns, how can we as good citizens decentralize insurance and minimize costs for everybody? Well, one way is stop calling our system health insurance; it really is more of disease maintenance system. And, I’m also a little annoyed with the term holistic. But whatever: flat feet or excessive pronation is epidemic; knee, hip, and low back pain are epidemic; digestion, weight, diabetes...epidemic, neck pain headaches...epidemic. anxiety/depression/ADD... epidemic. Are these conditions related to each other, and do they feed off of each other? Well we don’t

So, let’s start. Our mineral deficient foods create an immune deficiency, which makes it difficult to digest properly and creates a systemic cellular weakness, which then slows anaerobic/ aerobic cellular energy production; sugar / fat usage gets “confused” the endocrine system strains and misfires, headaches from hormonal imbalances and sugar problems increase. Muscles weaken, ligaments and tendons hurt, joints begin to do the work muscles should be doing, weakness is dominant, depression ensues, your feet hurt, your body goes into starvation and you gain weight because you are hungry all of the time and you eat more nutrient deficient food. Then, you end up on TV in a show called the biggest loser only to find out that you need to eat fresh whole food and exercise! You get to be on TV with Danny from the partridge family and learn life’s basic lesson: When you get fit, eat well, and take involvement in your health as a priority now, you don’t need as much medicine anymore and have a great time living again.

Since it’s integrating both, it’s called integrative medicine. TBW: How did you become interested and involved with Integrative Medicine? DR. CHOKSHI: As an internal medicine physician, I had seen a lot of physical diseases and physical complaints that had a lot to do with their emotional imbalance—high blood pressure, ulcers, or stress related issues that came into the physicians quite often as medical conditions. We don’t get formally trained how to address that in the medical school training. I started exploring to find out how I could educate myself. There are quite a few Universities training physicians and healthcare providers to look into mind-body medicine. I personally started doing

tive medicine. It’s integrative medicine. This made it clear in so many patient’s, physician’s, and health care provider’s minds, that we are not excluding mainstream medicine. We are integrating the best of both.

TBW: You did a significant amount of studying and training beyond your formal, required training for medical school.

TBW: Who can access the Integrative Medicine services offered at Tampa General Hospital?

DR. CHOKSHI: Yes. It was fun. It is fun to get out of the box thinking and training and left brain geared education and bring that balance to the art of medicine. TBW: What are some common misconceptions about Integrative Medicine? DR. CHOKSHI: The term came in the beginning as “alternative medicine;” it’s not truly now alterna-

DR. CHOKSHI: We have inpatient and outpatient programs. For the inpatient program, we prefer to have a physician’s order. The nurses initiate the consult and request. For outpatient, anyone and everyone has that access. They do not need a prescription or formal order from a physician. TBW: When did the inpatient program begin? DR. CHOKSHI: That began in June of 2004. The hospital has supported this program. Without

the openness of senior management, we would not have been able to start this program. Going back to October of 2003, I truly felt that I needed to take my professional career in a higher way in relationship to the patient. I started searching...I wanted to solely focus on mind-body medicine. I came to Tampa General Hospital. They were talking about a non-pharmacological approach in the pain management committee. They already had an established pain management committee. Janet Davis along with some nurses were exchanging some ideas on how we could incorparate the nonpharmacological approach along with a pharmacological approach. At that time I was searching for my career change. We created an Integrative Medicine Committee in the hospital. It was started as a hospital-supported inpatient program.

TBW: Please tell us more about the Integrative Medicine Team at Tampa General Hospital. DR. CHOKSHI: I am the lead physician. We also have a program coordinator, Kimberly Gray. We now have about 10 volunteers working for the program. They offer different modalities for inpatient care. We also include teen volunteers who do community service hours in our program. TBW: When did the outpatient program begin? DR. CHOKSHI: It’s very new. It started in October of 2009. It runs the first three Fridays of the month at noon. The last appointment is at 3 p.m., so we can schedule up to four patients. TBW: How is the Integrative Medicine team put in touch with the patients? DR. CHOKSHI: If a nurse thinks that they have a patient for integrative medicine, they call a physician and ask for a request. The physician approves the consultation, and they call us for the service.

INTEGRATIVE MEDICINE THERAPIES SUPPORT:

• Comfort • Relaxation • Sense of well-being • Clarity of thought • Improved rest • Improved circulation • Increased rate of healing • Natural healing processes • Reduction in perceived stress

TBW: We know that the Integrative Medicine Program offers several modalities. How do you determine which to use for a particular patient? DR. CHOKSHI: It’s based on the patient’s medical condition and diagnosis, and where their emotional state is. We also work with the patient’s family members and the nurses, too. It’s really holistic. All the team members get the benefits out of our visits. We address each and every person’s needs. We also have the Peace Room. The Peace Room brings a healing environment in patient care.

Feel The Positive Connection To Your Self, Group & World The timing is perfect!

TBW: What are the short and long-term plans for the program? DR. CHOKSHI: Long-term, we have started the outpatient program and employee education. We also do a lot of community education. Our first community program was on January 13. We had 60 people here. TBW: What are your favorite aspects of the work that you do in Integrative Medicine? DR. CHOKSHI: The program is focused on the mind-body approach. Most of the patients are there for pain management, anxiety management, and coping. When one of us does the bedside relaxation—like simple techniques of meditation, breathing, and guided imagery—how much it helps the patients is the elegance of this work. The simplicity of the mind-body approach is what I enjoy most. We send a sincere “thank you” to Dr. Sheela Chokshi for her interview this month. Find out what’s baffling the medical community. Discover why hospitals and universities around the world are investing time and money to understand these unprecedented healings... and how you, too, can master this extraordinary work! Reconnective Healing has been presented at the United Nations, presented at Madison Square Garden and been featured in The New York Times and is most recently featured in the new film The Living Matrix. As a doctor, Eric ran a highly successful chiropractic practice for 12 years until one day when patients began reporting that they felt his hands on them – even though he hadn’t physically touched them. Patients soon reported receiving miraculous healings from cancers, AIDS-related diseases, epilepsy, chronic fatigue syndrome, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid and osteoarthritis, birth disfigurements, cerebral palsy and other serious afflictions. All this occurred when Eric simply held his hands near them – and to this day, it continues. Documented in six books including his international bestseller, The Reconnection: Heal Others, Heal Yourself (now published in over 36 languages!), this new level of healing has now been taught to over 70,000 people in more than 70 countries! Kelly Woodruff, Reconnective Healing Instructor, is a Florida native and now resides in New York City. He has been a Reconnective Healing practitioner and teacher for six years and is excited to be part of the team bringing this revolutionary work to an international audience. Kelly’s personal journey of discovery led him to this wonderful new work after a career in theatre and on Broadway. In addition to teaching worldwide, he currently owns an architectural and interior design firm, as well as a thriving Reconnective Healing practice in New York. Fitness also seek man-made wind protection. When we get wind here, it can be like a hurricane. The buildings downtown block it.

PROTECT EXPOSED SKIN I use Vaseline on my nose and on my cheeks to prevent frostbite. You can also buy a Buff to protect exposed areas, especially the ears.

FORGET SPEED Winter running is more about maintenance kilometres than speedwork. In very cold weather, look for ‘inversions,’ places that are elevated and where the air will be warmer. Even 90 metres up, the air can be six degrees warmer, which makes a big difference. If you can’t run in the middle of the day when the temperatures are warmest, run twice a day, 5km in the morning and 5km in the evening: That’s better than doing one long 10km run where you might get very cold.

CHANGE QUICKLY

RUNNING IN THE COLD: TIPS & STRATEGIES GET MOTIVATED Make a date to meet someone for a run. There’s no wimping out when someone is waiting. Take it from one of the coldest running clubs in the world. John Stanton, the founder of the Running Room in Edmonton, Alberta says the club’s Wednesday and Sunday group runs are popular in winter, when the average high is -8°C. In January and February, the Running Room hosts the Hypothermic Half-Marathon, which attracts 3500 runners in 14 cities across the world - even at temps as low as -20°C. Solo? Tell yourself that you can go back inside after five minutes if it’s really bad. Usually you stay out there. Of course, not everyone objects to winter weather. A night run during a light rain is one of the most peaceful things you can experience.

GET DRESSED You want to be warm without sweating so much you get a chill. The rule of thumb is to dress as if it is 5 degrees warmer. You should be slightly cool when you start. arm area to vent air as you heat up. Shop around to find out what works best for your circumstances. Running jackets are an investment for outdoor comfort and they last for years.

WARM UP; PRE-RUN Move around inside enough to get the blood flowing without breaking a sweat. Run up and down your stairs, use a jump rope, or do a few yoga sun salutations. A speedy house-cleaning works, too. The cold doesn’t feel so cold when you’re warm. If you’re meeting a group of running buddies, don’t stand around in the cold chatting before you run. We sit in our cars, waiting for one person to get out before we all get out.

DEAL WITH WIND Start your run into the wind and finish with it at your back, so the breeze doesn’t blast you after you’ve broken a sweat. To avoid a long, biting slog, you can break this into segments, running into the wind for about 10 minutes, turning around to run with the wind at your back for five minutes, and repeating. You can

Your core body temperature drops as soon as you stop running. To avoid a lingering case of the chills, change your clothes - head to toe - as soon as you can. Women need to get out of damp sports bras quickly. Put a dry hat on wet hair. And drink something hot. We go to a coffee shop after, and take turns using the bathroom to change. Then we all relax with coffee and muffins. Driving to a run? Bring a thermos of green tea or hot chocolate.

DEAL WITH RAIN I have a spare pair of sneakers, a running outfit, and three beach towels. When it’s raining, I slip my stocking feet into plastic bags, then put on my running shoes. The bags keep my feet dry even when I run through puddles. Most wet weather runners rotate pairs of shoes. If you have to dry shoes overnight, crumple up newspaper and cram it tightly into your shoes, with the insoles removed. The newspaper soaks up the moisture. When drying running shoes however, don’t put them in the oven or tumble dry since it destroys the glue keeping the bits together.

BE SEEN With limited daylight, chances are you’ll be running in the dark. Wear reflective, fluorescent gear, and don’t be shy about lighting yourself up like a Christmas tree. I use a headlamp or carry a flashlight, less so I can see where I’m going and more so people can see me. SANDRA PRIOR is a freelance writer who owns her own bodybuilding website. Reconnective Yoga by Jen Jones rom fine-tuned physiques to soothed spirits, the benefits of yoga are no doubt pretty spectacular. Yet what happens when practitioners go even deeper than yoga’s good vibes and actively tap into energy vibrations? Thanks to Reconnective Yoga, many are starting to not only imagine—but experience—the possibilities. The brainchild of Los Angeles-based healing practice The Reconnection, Reconnective Yoga is designed to access an enlightened state by using healing frequencies to connect self, spirit, and universe. The idea was initially hatched four years ago by Dou g De Vito, who acts as Head of Planning for The Reconnection. An avid yoga practitioner and trained Reconnective Healing Practitioner, De Vito was inspired when his worlds unexpectedly collided: “One day, I was lying down in shavasana and the [healing] frequencies turned on, and I had a huge emotional, mental, and physical shift,” remembers De Vito. “I experienced a significant increase in clarity, sense of connectedness, and a lightness in my yoga practice like never before.” Seeds firmly planted, De Vito joined forces with fellow yogi and Reconnective Healing Instructor Kelly Woodruff, along with yoga instructors Kristoffer Nelson

F

and Douglass Stewart to combine the two concepts. For Nelson, it was a logical marriage: “There is an expansion of awareness and energy that ultimately leads to a state of flow and healing; in yoga terms, we call it grace,” says Nelson. “It was a really easy fit. One of most exciting things about [the Reconnective Healing aspect] is that it serves as a great way to show yoga teachers how transmission works, which deeply enriches the experience.” So what happens during a Reconnective Yoga class? It all starts before anyone even shows up, when the instructor “charges the field” to shift the room’s vibration and create an optimal environment. (All instructors are certified Reconnective Healing Practitioners) “It immediately turns your yoga studios into healing studios,” says De Vito. “By allowing the frequencies to enter their bodies, people are able to enter a deep meditative state and sometimes they report seeing colors and angels while in shavasana. Field charging amps up the experience exponentially on every level.” While the mental and spiritual sides are strongly enhanced, the actual physical yoga aspect may not appear much different to the casual observer. Classes start with a basic physical warmup—including poses like downward dog and forward fold— that progresses into various hatha flow poses. Says Nelson, “My Reconnective Yoga classes don’t necessarily differ from a regular Anusara class. The difference is that I use my instruction to point awareness and help get [yoga practitioners] into a more energetic and reflective space that invites these healing frequencies in.” www.tampabaywellness.com

As for the healing potential of Reconnective Yoga, can it possibly deliver the same results as Reconnective Healing? The thought is an exciting prospect—after all, The Reconnection founder Eric Pearl and his 70,000-plus trained healers around the world have successfully facilitated healings for ailments ranging from epilepsy to AIDS-related diseases. Though the same miracles are most definitely possible with Reconnective Yoga, De Vito says that those types of healing are “not the primary focus.” Most commonly, Reconnective Yoga practitioners experience improved alignment, lessened injuries, and stronger athleticism. Adds De Vito, “When you bring the frequencies into your body, it is almost as if the density that prevents you from getting into poses melts away. You drop into that state where there is stillness and connection between mind, body, spirit, and universe.” To date, Reconnective Yoga classes and teacher trainings have taken place at Reconnective Healing seminars and workshops worldwide—as well as at local havens like City Yoga and other popular studios. According to De Vito, Los Angeles has been the perfect launching pad for this progressive new concept. “Southern California tends to be relatively open in terms of the mind/body/spirit connection,” says De Vito. “We have a lot of support in LA, and it’s a wonderful place to be doing the work.” Looking to the future, Nelson and De Vito look forward to spreading the work and the message through a growing number of certified Reconnective Yoga instructors. “Through our trainings, we hope to get a solid community built,” says Nelson. “This could really spread over the world as fully and wonderfully as yoga has spread, and as fully and wonderfully as Reconnective Healing has spread. It all comes down to one key question—what are the ways we can get people to be healthy, happy, more conscious, engaged and fulfilled? And I think Reconnective Yoga is one of the key tools.” Reconnective Healing Seminars are coming to Tampa March 27-30. Taught by Kelly Woodruff. RUNNER’S HIGH MAY ALSO STRENGTHEN HEARTS

E

ndorphins and other morphine-like substances known as opioids, which are released during exercise, don’t just make you feel good -- they may also protect you from heart attacks, according to University of Iowa researchers. It has long been known that the so-called “runner’s high” is caused by natural opioids that are released during exercise. However, a UI study, which is published in the online edition of the American Journal of Physiology’s Heart and Circulatory Physiology, suggests that these opioids may also be responsible for some of exercise’s cardiovascular benefits. Working with rats, UI researchers showed that blocking the receptors that bind morphine, endorphins and other opioids eliminates the cardiovascular benefits of exercise. Moreover, the UI team showed that

exercise was associated with increased expression of several genes involved in opioid pathways that appear to be critical in protecting the heart. “This is the first evidence linking the natural opioids produced during exercise to the cardio-protective effects of exercise,” said Eric Dickson, M.D., UI associate professor and head of emergency medicine in the Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine and the study’s lead investigator. “We have known for a long time that exercise is great for the heart. This study helps us better understand why.” Studies have shown that regular vigorous exercise reduces the risk of having a heart attack and improves survival rates following heart attack, even in people with cardiovascular disease. In addition, exercise also

decreases the risk of atherosclerosis, stroke, osteoporosis and even depression. However, despite these proven health benefits, much less is understood about how exercise produces these benefits. The UI team also showed that exercise was associated with transient increases in expression of several opioid system genes in heart muscle, and changes in expression of other genes that are involved in inflammation and cell death. The researchers plan to investigate whether these altered gene expression patterns reveal specific cardio-protective pathways. A better understanding of how exercise protects the heart may eventually allow scientists to harness these protective effects for patients with decreased mobility. - Science Daily

An Interview with DAVID BURTON Writer/Editor/Director of InGREEDients The Movie

D

o you know and understand what partially hydrogenated oil is? If a label reads “zero grams of trans fat per serving,” can you trust that it means what it says? Do you really know what is in the food you eat? Registered nurse and filmmaker David Burton knows. He also says that what you think you know about your diet and the food you eat is completely wrong…DEAD wrong! David Burton is the writer, editor, and director of the film InGREEDients. Please join us this month for an interview with him. ,

When and why did you first decide to write and direct the film InGREEDients? This all started in April of 2007. I had just come back from a hiking trip with some friends of mine, and one of my friends had been complaining about partially hydrogenated oils on the back of one of the granola bars that he had been carrying through the woods. When we got back to my house, I was making him a sandwich and he was reading the ingredients on the bread and he asked, “Do you have anything else? I can’t eat this bread.”

I asked him “What’s wrong with it?” and he said “It has partially hydrogenated oil.” I started questioning him about it, and it really started because he couldn’t really tell me what was wrong with it, but he was convinced that it was bad. We did the research and found out it [partially hydrogenated oil] was terrible. It’s in so many processed foods. And then the clincher was going to work at the hospital: I’m a registered nurse. I went to the hospital and talked to nurses, doctors, and dieticians. They really weren’t too educated on the Trans fat, partially hydrogenated oil mystery. That’s when we realized we had a movie. It was kind of ironic that we were knocking around several different documentary ideas. This fell in our lap as we were planning what movie we were going to make, and we said, “Well, this is obviously it.’

Why do you think so many people still don’t take the dangers of Trans fats and partially hydrogenated oils serious? That’s a really complicated question. A lot of it is that people don’t take their health seriously until they lose it. That’s the sad part. People get really interested in their health when they are sick. But a lot of times that’s already after twenty or thirty years of eating bad, smoking, or whatever it is that got them sick. That’s the first problem. The second is what we were just saying and the reason we made the movie. A lot of these cardiac surgeons don’t even know what a Trans fat is. That’s a strange

thing. A lot of people out there feel like what their doctor says is it: That’s the gospel to a lot of people, and they don’t listen to a lot of alternative sources. They listen to their doctors, and the doctors aren’t that informed on (first) nutrition as much as they should be, and (second) the chemical additives in processed food. The third component is the media and the labeling law. You’ve got a lot of confusion there…With the movie, we’re trying to get people to actually read their ingredients and not eat partially hydrogenated oil, which is a trans fat; but it’s still in the foods that say zero grams of trans fat. It’s quite confusing, even for people who are becoming aware, knowing they shouldn’t eat Trans fats, attempting not to, but still consuming them.

How have audiences received the film in terms of emotional reactions and questions they pose to you? The screenings have been awesome. I think the biggest reaction people are having to the movie is that they are definitely reading their food labels. They are definitely looking at the ingredients portion and not just the calorie information. That’s a big question that we were finding out when people were coming back and seeing the movie a second time. We’ve been screening it so many times in the Tampa Bay Area that we’re getting a little bit of a following. People are coming and showing their support. A lot of people who were reading labels, were just reading how many calories, how much fat, how www.tampabaywellness.com

much sugar; and they would never really get down all the way to that ingredients part that says what’s actually in the food. I think that’s the coolest thing we are doing: We are actually getting people to read that. As we’re sending people off on this mission to read their labels, find the partially hydrogenate oil, and don’t purchase the products with it in it, and don’t consume these things, now what they are starting to ask is “What are all these other things I’m reading?...What are all of these words I can’t even pronounce that look like chemical concoctions? Why are there 22 ingredients in my Doritos or corn chips?” The movie is really about Trans fats and partially hydrogenated oil. I’m really excited that people are working really hard to get that one ingredient out of their diet, and while they’re doing it, they’re having to read through all of these other ingredients, and now they are really questioning their food which is good.”

What are your plans to bring this film into schools and health centers? We have an outreach program on our website. We’ve donated one copy for every 10 that our sold on our site. The schools have had the most overwhelmingly wonderful response…The schools have been great avenues for us, because they are listening and going home and convincing their parents to shop differently, and the parents are listening to their kids more than me. Our big thing is just trying to get people to read their ingredient labels. We are also trying to get people to become a fan on facebook.com. We talk about a lot of things on there that the movie doesn’t cover. We are also trying to get people go to our website and participate in the outreach program. Thank you for the interview and for telling our readers about this film! www.tampabaywellness.com

TIPS FOR LIVING GLUTEN FREE By Dr. Ian Wahl, DAc, LAc, CH

G

luten has been a huge topic in the news in 2009. We notice that more foods are being promoted as “gluten-free”. Yet most people have no idea what gluten is or why there are “glutenfree” foods. Let’s see if we can bring some clarity to why even Chex Cereal is now being advertised as “gluten-free”. Gluten is nothing more than a protein in wheat, rye, barley and oats. Most of us would never know if we ate something with gluten in it. However, some people have a sensitivity or intolerance to gluten which manifests as a “wheat allergy”. If you have a wheat allergy, your body thinks that wheat is a harmful substance that needs to be attacked and repelled. The symptoms of a wheat allergy vary, but commonly manifest as some gastrointestinal distress, maybe skin irritations, and even sinus congestion. On the other hand, there is a more serious autoimmune disorder known as Celiac Disease. Celiac disease is not a “wheat allergy”. It is a genetic disorder in which the body attacks itself when gluten is ingested. Celiac disease is difficult to diagnose without specific blood testing. Most people with celiac disease have been misdiagnosed because of its wide range of symptoms. The following are a sampling of the symptoms of celiac disease: • Short-term symptoms include, bloating after eating gluten, diarrhea, constipation, nausea, vomiting, difficulty concentrating, irritability, itchy skin rashes.

TIPS FOR FOLLOWING A GLUTEN FREE DIET • When baking, there are great substitutes for wheat flour now available. They contain a combination of rice flour, tapioca starch and potato starch, which can be substituted 1:1 for wheat flour in many recipes. These ready-made, all-purpose, gluten free flour products are available at many grocery and specialty stores, as well as on-line. • Although the internet is filled with misinformation, the following websites are accurate and provide a tremendous amount of information on how to live 28 FEBRUARY 2010 • Tampa Bay WELLNESS

• Long-term symptoms include chronic fatigue, anemia, osteoporosis, easily fractured bones, chronic weight loss. It is estimated that as many as 1 in 133 Americans have celiac disease with as many as 2 million people who are unaware that they even have it. Although there is no cure for celiac disease, following a gluten free diet will allow the intestinal lining to heal and will also relieve all celiac symptoms. The longterm effect of not following a gluten free diet for someone with celiac disease can be life-threatening. Gluten is in many food products, such as bread, pizza, cookies and cakes, but is also a hidden substance in foods in the forms of food starch, natural flavoring, fillers and seasonings. Gluten is also found in many over-the-counter and prescription medications as fillers and excipients. Gluten is also often used in cosmetics, health and beauty products and household products. You can see how a person with celiac disease must be vigilant in order to eliminate all gluten from their lives. The good news is that today gluten-free foods are available in most local grocery stores as well as in specialty food stores and on-line. Even restaurants have become so familiar with celiac disease, that many provide gluten-free menus.

a gluten free life: glutenfree.com; glutenfreemall. com; celiacdisease.net and csaceliacs.org. • As mentioned above, many restaurants now have gluten free menus. However, when eating out, always inform the server that you are on a gluten free diet when you are seated. Ask to speak to the manager and go over menu choices and preparation before ordering. The manager will alert the kitchen staff and chef to insure that your food is prepared safely. • When traveling, staying in a residence-type hotel with a kitchenette, makes it easier to follow a gluten free diet. • Sleep-away camp can still be fun for a child with celiac disease. Just work with the camp directors and staff to insure a safe experience for your child.

Dr. Ian Wahl, DAc, LAc, CH is a health practitioner and writer for ChicagoHealers.com.

Some camps will even provide a section of a freezer and a microwave so pre-made foods can be sent from home while following the camp menu with gluten free alternatives. • Parties can be managed quite well by calling ahead and speaking with the host or hostess. This will enable you to determine the planned menu and bring a dish that is gluten free. • Find a local celiac support group by searching for one in your area on the internet. Remember, a diagnosis of celiac disease for you, your child, or a loved one, is not “the end of the world”. It is the beginning of a wonderful, transformational journey toward healing, health, and well-being that will allow you to become the healthy person you were meant to be. www.tampabaywellness.com

THE ENDOCRINE SYSTEM AND HORMONE MIMICKERS

Diet Failures May be Linked to a Toxic US Food Supply!

T

here is a new epidemic. Growing numbers of “healthy” people are complaining of unexplained weight gain, belly fat, hormone problems, lack of energy, chronic pain, insomnia, digestion problems, allergies, low immune function, fibromyalgia, arthritis, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, bone loss, hair loss, low libido, as well as an array of other symptoms. These are often attributed to stress, age or just being “out of shape.” It has been discovered that in many cases these symptoms could be caused by endocrine (hormone) system imbalances. Hormones control how our bodies grow and operate. If balanced and healthy, we should not even know we have them. However, your hormones can easily become disturbed and confused by many factors. This confusion, and the imbalance it causes, can create an array of chronic symptoms. Within the endocrine system, normal hormone communication starts in the brain with the pituitary gland where hormones are released into the blood stream. From there, they flow to other glands to “turn-on” function via that gland’s receptor site. These include the thyroid, pancreas, liver, adrenal, ovaries, uterus, and prostate. The receptor site acts like a keyhole in which the particular hormone will fit like a key. That hormone then acts like a switch to “turn-on” function. The gland then sends a reply message back to the brain via the blood stream acknowledging that the message was received. This communication line is where the trouble starts. Toxins and poisons in our environment and food cause a breakdown of communication by preventing our body’s hormones from getting into the cell receptor site. The EPA reported that certain pesticides, chemicals and other substances may modify the normal functioning of wildlife endocrine (hormone) systems. The EPA calls them endocrine disruptors because these substances disrupt endocrine (hormone) communication. Is it possible that wildlife endocrine systems are similar to human endocrine systems? Why is this even an issue we should be concerned about? Well, it’s kind of like breaking a key off in a keyhole. We’ve all either had it happen, or have heard about it from someone. The key that’s broken off gets stuck in the keyhole, so when you go to put another key in the keyhole to unlock the door, it’s blocked. So, you have to call the locksmith to remove the broken key so you can get your other key into the lock to open your door. It’s a frustrating situation that sets a bad tone for the rest of the day. Think for a moment of what happens in your body when your thyroid gland or adrenal glands get these endocrine (hormone) disruptors stuck in the cell’s receptor site. These endocrine disruptors are really hormone mimickers. They trick your body into thinking they are the real hormone, but they are not. They appear, to the cell’s receptor site, like the real thing, but when the receptor site allows it in, it gets stuck there, which prevents the real hormones from getting in. This creates a big problem since the originating gland does not get a response from the receiving gland that it got the message. This causes the originating gland to increase its messages. Have you ever tried to speak to someone who didn’t respond? You start speaking louder and louder and it gets real upsetting, right? Well, your body’s glands and organs get upset when they don’t get a response to a communication. Over time, functional problems arise on a systemic level, and can manifest as a variety of chronic diseases and symptoms. If you suspect your hormones are not communicating correctly, I invite you to attend one of our upcoming classes and find out what you can do to correct this problem. Call our class hotline at (727) 669-6000 and register to attend a free class. DR. A Troubled Heart

Finds Strength Erin R. Sprankle

A

sudden apprehension arose just before the elevator doors slid open to the third floor of the hospital. Beyond the doors, gleaming stainless steel equipment, crisp white walls and smiling faces revealed a stark contrast to the antiquated building surrounding the floor. As he stepped out of the elevator, the vision before Les Nachman was par to the exceptional treatment he had already been shown. The brief apprehension melted and confidence returned. A medical procedure of this magnitude was not often accompanied with a vacation-like atmosphere. A personal attendant had met him at the airport, assisted him to the hotel and escorted him to dinner. A tour of the town had also been scheduled during the brief few days stay in the Dominican Republic. “Everything they said they would do, they did. We were treated like royalty. It was a wonderful experience”, stated Les. Now it was time to receive the treatment he had spent several months researching.

Les Nachman

It had been a long ten-year struggle since his first diagnosis with heart disease. Having researched and tried many therapies, he was now learning of an alternative. Stem cell therapy is nothing new, but this unique use of using one’s own stem cells extracted from the blood, a procedure very similar in theory to bone marrow transplants, was just what Les Nachman had been waiting for. He had spent time studying theories and practices of top hospitals in the country, their use of embryonic stem cells and stem cells extracted from the spine, but he wasn’t completely at peace with his findings. “I was just waiting for something like this,” Les remarked, “and low www.tampabaywellness.com

and behold it presented itself and I took advantage of it.” Last year, Les Nachman and Dr. Levy, a colleague and trusted cardiologist consultant, met Dr. Zannos Grekos at a medical convention in Orlando. Skeptical at first, both men walked away from their conversation with Dr. Grekos pleasantly satisfied with the doctor’s demeanor, his advanced education and his expertise in using adult stem cells to treat his patients. Les, primarily concerned with treatment aimed towards the heart, returned to Nevada with information about RegenocyteTM and Dr. Grekos. Les then brought the information before his concierge physician to gain his perspective on RegenocyteTM and the idea of adult stem cell therapy. Intrigued, his physician contacted Dr. Grekos and conducted a telephone interview relating to the therapy. His concierge physician and Dr. Levy both agreed that RegenocyteTM and Dr. Grekos were conducting a premier and reputable use of adult stem cells and concluded that Les should pursue the therapy for his heart. With the encouragement of both physicians, Les began the preliminary work for his adult stem cell therapy. Upon beginning the tests, Les measured a 23% Ejection Fraction (EF) rate that revealed what Les had known for years - his heart was in serious decline. “Heart disease is a one way ticket to death,” Les lamented. After his blood was drawn, it was then couriered to Israel. The Israeli portion of the stem cell process intrigued Les. Israel houses a state-ofthe-art laboratory that takes each patient’s blood, extracts the stem cells and then genetically engineers them into millions of cells while educating them to assist the exact organ that is to be treated. When the laboratory in Israel is finished, the stem cells are couriered to the Dominican Republic where the awaiting patient is prepared for therapy. Les’s heart received thirty injections into the left ventricle via a specialized catheter. This

catheter was developed to allow precise delivery of the stem cells to the exact location needed. As the stem cells were injected into Les’s heart they began to repair the damaged areas. The therapy took approximately twenty minutes, after which he spent the night under observation in the hospital and then was released the next morning. Three months after the therapy, Les recorded an EF rate of 38%, a 75% increase in the performance of his heart before the therapy. Les didn’t need to hear the results from Dr. Grekos...he felt them. “I’m thinking about dancing again and doing things I haven’t done,” responded Les. “I stay in the office instead of leaving to take a nap. My life took on a whole new meaning and I have a good feeling about this lasting.” From the beginning to the end the procedure felt nothing like a routine medical treatment, but rather resembled a vacation – a vacation with heartfelt results. Today, Les is awaiting his six-month postprocedure check up where Dr. Grekos will perform a battery of tests and evaluate his progress. Les is extremely optimistic due to the wonderful developments at his three-month check up and his increasing wellbeing.

Dr. Zannos Grekos and Regenocyte Therapeutic can be found at www.regenocyte.com. Regenocyte Therapeutic is leading the world in adult stem cell therapy. Dr Grekos periodically conducts national and local seminars to educate the public about adult stem cell therapy. The next seminars will be held February 8th at 1pm and February 24 at 1pm. at the Collier County Regional Library located at 2385 Orange Blossom Drive in Naples, Florida. Relationships

What Do You Expect? Most of us expect our partner to love, honor and cherish us, or we would not ask them to take the marriage vows. But can’t loving, honoring and cherishing be demonstrated in a range of different behaviors? For example, being physically affectionate; showing compassion; being a good listener; taking care of you when you’re sick; respecting your ideas or plans even when they differ from your partner’s. Which of those behaviors do you expect from your future spouse? On the other hand, aren’t there some behaviors By Belinda Farrell that you absolutely expect your partner never to engage in—like spousal abuse?

THE

Beyond demonstrating that they love us, and not harming us physically, what else do we expect of our mates? The following are some common expectations that come under the umbrella of compatibility. As you consider these, see if you can begin to zero-in on your own specific marital desires and standards. I expect sexual compatibility and “chemistry” between us. I expect us to get along on a daily basis. I expect us to be able to manage an argument without “going nuclear”— and to make up when it’s over. I expect us to be in agreement on the important stuff—like having (or not having) kids and planning for our future.

By Jim Bierman PhD

R

ealizing that our relationship isn’t perfect but “good enough” is not the same thing as “settling.” To me, settling means there’s a part of you that’s impatient, a part that sadly believes this is all you deserve, a part that thinks that the lover of your dreams is either pure fantasy or already taken by someone else. I know some people settle because they’re desperate to be with someone, or to leave home, or to have a baby. But when Brad and I decided to get married, it wasn’t about settling. We had a long enough engagement so that we both realized we could be really happy with each other, that together we could learn and grow and comfort each other through good times and bad. That was good enough for me! - Jennifer, married six years

hat do you expect from your partner and from marriage? If you’re like many young couples, you may feel that you and your spouse-

to-be are a perfect match and that your future life together is destined to play out perfectly. In your current state of pre-marital bliss, you may believe that there’s no need to talk over boring specifics about sharing a bank account, changing careers, or bringing up kids with your religion rather than your partner’s. After all, you expect that love will conquer all…Or maybe you and your partner don’t define your emotional state as necessarily blissful; still, you love each other and are looking forward to getting married. In your case, the two of you haven’t discussed your marital expectations because, well…you really have no expectations. You’re getting married, you trust your partner, and you figure that whatever problems arise will somehow be reasonably resolved. Although you may think that the word “expectations” has a negative ring, knowing what you expect and want from marriage is a good thing. When we’re clear about our expectations, we’re much more apt to achieve our goals and be satisfied with the life we’ve built. On the other hand, if we are unclear about what we want, nothing will ever seem good enough. Our desires will be aimless, and we’ll wind up constantly hungering for more than we have.

I expect us to agree on how to manage our money. I expect my partner to care about my family. I expect us to trust each other and to be there for each other. I expect my partner to respect me. I expect my partner to be faithful. Overall, we expect our mate to be compatible in many ways—physically, emotionally, socially, and practically. Whether we’re aware of it or not, we enter into marriage with a long list of unspoken expectations. When we don’t acknowledge our expectations or share them with our mate, misunderstandings and conflicts can arise. Copyright© Jim Bierman PhD 2006 All rights reserved
