THOUSANDS OF TAMPA RESIDENTS PUT ON YOUR PINK BRA TO FIGHT BREAST CANCER ONE STEP AT A TIME

H

undreds of Tampa residents, breast cancer survivors, business and community members will join together and put on their pink bras at the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 5K walk to fight breast cancer and provide hope to all people facing the disease. This noncompetitive, fundraising event will unite the community in celebrating breast cancer survivors, educate men and women about the importance of early detection and prevention, and raise money to fund lifesaving research and support programs that will further the progress against this disease. The Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk will take place at on Saturday, October 22 at the St Petersburg Times Forum, located at 401 Channelside Dr. Registration will open at 7:30 a.m. and the walk will begin at 9 a.m.

Participants will need more than sneakers for this year’s walk, as they are encouraged to “Put On Your Pink Bra.” The “Put On Your Pink Bra” campaign empowers walkers to wear pink bras in support of the fight against breast cancer. All across the state, walkers will sport pink bras to represent a personal breast cancer journey or the journey of a survivor they know. 4 OCTOBER 2011 • Tampa Bay Wellness

“When you ‘Put On Your Pink Bra,’ you are symbolizing the personal nature of the fight against breast cancer,” said event chairperson Erica Shea. “Participants decorate, bedazzle and bejewel pink bras that tell their individual stories. The range of bras donning lace, glitter, flowers, feathers, jewels and other embellishments is as unique as each Floridian’s battle with this disease.” This year’s inaugural “Put On Your Pink Bra” campaign is a part of the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer program. Money raised through these events funds breast cancer research, provides up-to-date breast cancer information, ensures everyone has access to breast cancer screening and treatments – regardless of income – and provides services that improve the quality of life for patients and their families. “Almost everyone has been touched by breast cancer in some way,” said Shea. “Florida ranks third in the nation for the number of new breast cancer cases and the number of related deaths. Making Strides Against Breast Cancer celebrates those who have survived and helps ensure future generations of Floridians do not face this lifethreatening disease alone. Making Strides truly demonstrates that hope starts with each

and every one of us, right in our hometown.” The Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 5K walk supports the American Cancer Society’s unique mission to fight cancer on all four fronts: research, education, advocacy and patient services. Over time, the Society has invested more in breast cancer research than any other voluntary public health organization. Since 1972, it has invested nearly $323 million in breast cancer research grants, resulting in many of today’s breast cancer treatments. The Pink Premier Sponsor for the 2011 Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk in Tampa is Florida Hospital. Media partners are 10 News, Magic 94.9 and the St. Petersburg Times. Additionally, hundreds of teams from businesses, schools, and community groups from the community will participate.

Action is needed to make the difference between a life of joy and one of depression and negativity. Making the motions a real part of one’s life takes discipline, attention to oneself, a feeling of worth and ongoing inspiration from teachers like Julia Mader and Jill Ayn Schneider.

NAVIGATING THE HIGHWAY TO BETTER HEALTH Free Event Covers the Five Essentials to Better Living.

Clearwater, FL. With so much information about diet, health and exercise available, it can be terribly confusing to know who to trust and what’s right for you. Maximized Living™ a wellness program that enhances the body’s own natural healing ability can help you steer clear of roadblocks and get on the road to better health faster. On October 8th, Risoldi Family Chiropractic and Westchase Chiropractic will host a Total Health Makeover at the Northwest Hillsborough YMCA. From 8:30 to 11:30 am, a team of holistic chiropractors will be teaching about the five essentials for optimal living. These include: maximizing your mind; nervous supply; oxygen and lean muscle; proper nutrition; and minimizing toxins in the body. To get things rolling, Dr. Mike Risoldi will discuss the function of the nervous system and how it’s essential for cell function and healing. Just one misalignment of the vertebrae can affect your overall mental and physical health. Dr. Mike will explain how you can reverse these detours, get your spine on track and

prevent further injury. Of course, his well-trained crew will be on hand to scan your spine– just to make sure it’s firing properly. And if you don’t know how “modern nutrition” and over-the-counter and prescription drugs are literally poisoning us, you’ll be interested in what this team has to say about toxicity. They’ll explain how it affects everything from your weight to your sleep and peace of mind. They will also show you how to minimize these toxins and safely detoxify your body. Doctors Michael Sosa and Raul Serrano will share how proper maintenance can help you prevent and reverse heart disease, cancer, diabetes and more. They will even teach you to get fit in as little as 12 minutes a week and how you can lose 10 pounds fast, and keep it off! Admission to this event is completely free but pre-registration is strongly encouraged as seating is limited. Please call Westchase Chiropractic at 813-855-2424 or the Hillsborough YMCA at 813-249-8510 today to make your reservation.

"How To Meditate" Pyramid

Being on the spiritual path does not mean that you are immune to the frustrations of modern An Interview by Lisa Wilson life. In fact, the farther you go along the path the more your commitment is tested. Over the following pages you will find meditations to help you to overcome specific problems. I have sketched a possible scenario and provided suggestions for suitable affirmations to use in each case, but as you become more confident and experienced you may want to devise your own visualizations based on the principles. Whichever path you take, may it lead you to your true place and to a life of fulfillment and peace.

Clearing resentment If ever you feel that you have been criticized unfairly and have been denied the opportunity to tell your side of the story, or if you have been taken for granted, use this method to clear any leftover resentment. If you do not clear it, your frustration will eat away at you bringing more harm to you than the person you hold responsible for your unhappiness.

Exercise: Getting rid of an upset Get into your chosen position. Close your eyes, breathe naturally and when you feel suitably relaxed imagine that you are sitting at a desk. In front of you are pen, paper, envelope, candle, matches and a bowl filled with water. Look down at the blank paper in front of you and take up the pen. Now write a letter to the person who you believe has upset you, describing your feelings and explaining the situation, as you understand it. It is necessary to express your feelings, as the primary purpose of this exercise is to face and free your emotions. Once you have released your anger you will hopefully see the situation from a less impassioned perspective and having done so you may now feel able to 'forgive and forget'. When you have finished your letter imagine addressing the envelope (adding a description of the person if you do not know their name) and put the letter inside. Now ask your guide or 'Higher Self' to take it into the light. Visualize burning the envelope in the candle flame and when it has curled into ashes drop it into the bowl. Dealing with disappointment To feel disappointment is to discover how badly you wanted something.

Whether the object of your ambition is worthy of your efforts and whether it is right for you is something that only honest reflection can reveal. If you are determined to achieve something you can ensure success by visualizing yourself planning the necessary steps to acquire it, and then seeing yourself having attained it as a present reality. Dispelling fear and worry Our imagination is the means through which we can create a new reality, but the thoughts and emotions which empower the process can be either negative or positive, so we have to be careful which variety we bring into being. Although meditation should never be used to dwell on the negative if you are at the mercy of fearful thoughts it can be useful to examine those fears in visualization where you imagine the worst that could happen to you if your fears are realized. You might be surprised to discover that there is a limit to what can go wrong, and that it is not as bad as you had feared. Facing your fears head on in this way and naming them instead of allowing them to roam as vague, formless monsters in your nightmares should also be enough to strip them of their power over you.

meditation Think of those times as a gift that has enriched your life and is now an integral part of your character. Such experiences can never be taken from you. Understand that death is merely a transition from life to life, that our divine essence cannot die and that what we are grieving for is our loss and not their passing. Consider the parable of the grief-stricken mother who begged Buddha to restore her dead child to life and was told to find a house that had never known death. In the pain of grief we forget that no one is immune from suffering and loss. We all die and we all leave someone behind to mourn our passing. If there were no one to grieve that would mean that our life had touched no one and that would indeed be a cause for sorrow. Relationship problems It takes two to create difficulties in a relationship, so begin by altering your perception of the problem and 'centre' yourself so that you remain calm and objective in the midst of any upsets.

Exercise: Resolving difficulties Get into your chosen position. Close your eyes, breathe naturally and when you feel suitably relaxed visualize the other person surrounded by white light, which is the radiance of their spirit. Soften your heart center by meditating on compassion. See the other person as a divine being whose human nature is as fallible as your 14 OCTOBER 2011 • Tampa Bay Wellness

own, but who is continually seeking perfection through experience.

Draw them towards you and embrace them while repeating the following affirmation: 'X and I are enjoying a good, positive relationship. Energy is flowing freely between us.' Then release them and watch as they fade into the distance. If the relationship is right for you, the other person will sense a change in the atmosphere on a psychic level and should respond. Tension will be diffused and you will be able to talk matters through calmly. Connecting with your 'higher self' Choose or create an affirmation that relates to your present circumstances, or to the specific question that you wish to have answered, and use it like a mantra to reveal the truth of the situation.

Exercise: seeking guidance Relax into a meditative state and say your chosen sentence or ask your question once. Then listen for an answer. Let thoughts rise spontaneously, but attach no importance to them until they cease to be random and meaningless. Repeat the affirmation or question a second time and listen again for a response. Repeat saying the two affirmations, once a day, on 11 consecutive days. Long before the final session you should find yourself holding a conversation with your 'Higher Self'

that will be spontaneous, natural and flowing and will contain insights that you could not possibly have obtained from your conscious mind. You will know that this is a genuine communication rather than imagination because the words will flow faster than you can think of them. Taking control in life Whether you want to free yourself from a bad habit such as smoking, go on a diet or be more in control of your emotions, the following exercise should prove beneficial.

Exercise: Practicing self-control Get into your chosen position. Close your eyes, breathe naturally and when you feel suitably relaxed identify precisely what it is that you want to achieve. Consider if anything is preventing you from achieving your goal. Visualize yourself overcoming those obstacles. If you simply visualize yourself achieving your aim you will not be successful, as your inner resistance will not have been addressed. Gradually return to waking consciousness, note down any insights that you have received and act on them in anticipation of being successful. This will reinforce your resolve and make it easier to achieve your goal, as you will not be struggling against any inner resistance. www.tampabaywellness.com

visualization visualization If you need proof that visualizations are much more than sophisticated daydreams then this exercise should give it to you. This particular version is my adaptation of an inner exploration that has been used from ancient times to the present day. Its effectiveness in teasing out those secret hopes and concerns that lie just beneath the surface of your consciousness will be evident on your first attempt. However, with regular practice the details will change to reflect your inner state. I have to admit that I have used this exercise to 'hook' new students at taster sessions and that it has never failed to stimulate their interest in meditation.

Exercise: House of the spirit Get into your chosen position. Close your eyes, breathe naturally, and when you feel sufficiently relaxed begin to visualize a rural landscape with a house in the distance. Note the weather and details of whatever lies between you and the house. Let the images arise spontaneously. Do not try to change them into what you would like to see instead, and do not be tempted to

analyze them now. Begin to walk towards the house. Again note the details of the terrain. Is it difficult to cross? Is it overgrown or cultivated? Do you find yourself in a field of flowers or a bleak, windswept scrubland with nettles? Are there obstacles and, if so, do you overcome them easily? You are now standing at the boundary of the property. Does it have a wall and, if so, is it high or low? Is there a door or gate in the wall and what condition is it in? 'Beyond the gate is there a garden, a paved area or an untidy yard strewn with rubble? If there is a garden, then note if it is well tended or if it is overgrown. Now you are at the front door. What type of door is it and is it easy to open? Once inside you are faced with stairs leading to the first floor. Walk up the stairs and enter the room that faces you. Take time to absorb every detail of the furnishings and particularly the painting that is on the far wall. There are also a desk and a chair by the window. Take a look out of the window. What do you see? Now make yourself comfortable in the chair and open the envelope that you will find on the desk with your name on it. Read the letter and note its contents carefully. What exactly does it say? It may be valuable advice on a subject that has been concerning you recently. Continued on next page

Meditation Techniques Continued from page 15

In return for this advice you take something from your pocket and put it in the envelope before placing it back on the desk. Now leave the room and return the way you came, noting any changes to the house and its surroundings as you do so. When you feel ready, slowly return to waking consciousness by counting down from ten to one. Before you forget it, write down everything you can remember in your journal.

Analyzing what you saw Using your common sense and a good dictionary of symbols will help you to analyze whatever you saw, but the following notes will serve as a guide to get you started. As you become more experienced in exploring your psyche you will be able to trust your intuition more so that the significance of the symbolism becomes clearer. Your meditations will then become an ever more valuable source of insight into your attitudes and what is happening to you currently.

The surroundings The surrounding landscape in the exercise represents your attitude to your current circumstances. Heavy skies and difficult terrain suggests that you anticipate problems and that you see them as an unfair hindrance to your ambitions.

This practical guide for beginners offers

Walls, gates & gardens The wall symbolizes your resistance to inner guidance. If there is no wall or the wall is too low then it indicates that you have already demonstrated a willingness to trust your own intuition. The gate or door in the wall is symbolic of the connection between the conscious mind and the subconscious. The size of the entrance and the ease with which you entered indicates your current ability to enter this altered state of consciousness. The area beyond the door or gate symbolizes your present state of mind. A garden that is overgrown with weeds represents worries and unresolved matters that need to be dealt with. A rubble-strewn yard might symbolize a fear that whatever you undertake will fail, even if there is no rational reason for this belief. It can also represent a lot of matters that are unresolved and are preventing you from moving forward.

Entering the house The front door of the house represents your attitude to life, the ease with which you are prepared to try new things and the manner in which you expect to be received by other people. The house itself represents your psyche. If it is old-fashioned but in good decorative order, then you are rather conservative by nature and concerned with personal comfort. If it is bright, spacious and of modern design then you are more forward-looking, open to new ideas and generally adventurous. The staircase is symbolic of your family life. Narrow or steep steps indicate what you perceive to be insurmountable problems, while a spiral staircase suggests that you feel the need to avoid difficult situations at home.

The view from the window in the room on the first floor symbolizes your dreams. These might be unfulfilled ambitions, childhood memories, and hopes for the future, or what you insist on seeing as lost opportunities. Whatever they signify, if you find yourself becoming emotional do not try to suppress it. Let it flow and move on. The next time you look through the window in the visualization you should be pleasantly surprised.

The room's contents The painting could be either a self-portrait or a symbol of something of great significance for you at this present time. If it is a self-portrait it might appear in the image of your true nature, which will be ageless, loving and compassionate. However, it might also appear in a form that reveals what you are feeling deep down inside - emotions that are hidden from your conscious self and the world at large. Do not be surprised if it does not look like you at all, but has an air of strange familiarity. It could be one of your previous incarnations. The letter is a message from your 'Higher Self' and the object that you put into the envelope can be either something that you secretly wish to unburden yourself of or a gift to that inner personality. The significance of the object should become clear if you meditate upon it. Many people do not see anything written on the letter when they meditate, but it frequently comes to them in the form of an inspired idea during their sleep later that same night. If you have unburdened yourself of something or have benefited from making this journey, then the surroundings should change accordingly as you retrace your steps. 

visualizations and exercises to promote a sense of serenity and wellbeing. The book includes techniques to release tension and achieve deep relaxation and outlines various ways to stimulate universal energy to heal yourself and others. How to Meditate also offer advice on creating a personal sanctuary in your own home and explanations of how mantras and affirmations can help you develop a positive outlook. Chapters such as "Working with the Chakras" and "Music for Meditation" explore the various, wide-ranging aspects of meditation and the book also expands on color therapy and issues of self-image.

• Earth's Best Organic Elmo Noodlemania Soup According to the non-profit group, every food sample tested positive for BPA. BCF says Campbell's Disney Princess and Toy Story soups had the highest amounts. Researchers are concerned because the levels found in these children's foods disrupt the body's delicate, developing hormonal systems. This small sampling appears to be reflective of a bigger issue.

BPA found in kids' canned food

Campbell Soup Company spokesman Anthony Sanzio told Web MD: "BPA is used by the entire industry as a can lining to protect the food because it is approved for that use," says Sanzio. "We are talking about parts per billion here. These are very small, minute amounts that regulatory bodies have said don't pose a threat to human health." "We are confident in what the science tells us, but that does not mean that we don't understand the concerns that consumers have expressed," says Sanzio. The industry may downplay the exposure, but even the Food and Drug Administration has warned pregnant woman and small children should "limit their exposure." Researchers at The National Institutes of Health consider BPA to be a threat to human health. You can lower kids' exposure to BPA by cutting down on canned and processed foods and eating more fresh foods. Avoid plastic containers with a #3 or #7 on the bottom.

I remember the days when Spaghettios or Chef Boyardee made up my favorite lunch. Yes, that was back in the day when I thought PopTarts were better than a doughnut because at least they contained "fruit." While I certainly didn't have a good grasp of nutrition in middle school, I would have never imagined that the can itself would one day contain something even more controversial. It's called Bisphenol A, or BPA. If you look inside a food or soda can you may see a clear or white coating. It keeps the food from having a metallic taste, however researchers are finding it mimics estrogen in our bodies and has been linked to an increase in breast, reproductive cancers, early puberty, obesity and other diseases. Consumer Reports found Bisphenol A or BPA in all canned foods and beverages tested back in 2009 which is why the group is calling for manufacturers to stop using BPA. Some countries, including Japan have already removed it. BPA is showing up in the majority 18 OCTOBER 2011 • Tampa Bay Wellness

of Americans, at rates higher than other populations studied. Now, new tests of canned food marketed to children also found BPA lurking in the can liners. A lot of my mommy friends work hard to find BPAfree bottles, teethers and toys but many never expected it to show up in some canned foods including two brands that cater to health-conscious parents. The Breast Cancer Fund tested these 6 canned foods that are marketed to children:

With a little bit of planning, you can soak beans the night before or buy roasted tomatoes in a glass container. And if your kids can't live without their canned ravioli, see what happens when they try a few bites of ravioli from Ravioli Company on Manhattan Avenue in Tampa--that's as homemade as it gets!  Heather Van Nest is a community leader, CoAnchor on 10-News and an avid health enthusiast Heather brings a wealth of knowledge and resources

Cells Gone Mad: What Happens During Cancer

M

ost of us have heard of cancer and may even know someone close us that had/has it. However can we explain what goes on in the body when cancer is present? Chromosome Abnormalities Chromosomes are structures consisting of DNA that coils around proteins in our cells. Genetic disorders can occur when a person inherits a few or greater number of chromosomes than is normal, when pieces have been broken or when chromosomes have changes in their DNA structure. Chromosomes that break can be repaired incorrectly or not at all. Broken and un-repaired chromosomes can then be passed on to your offspring. These breaks can occur naturally OR from outside agents such as ionizing radiation and chemicals. Ionizing Radiation can be nuclear (x-rays) or any form of electro magnetic energy (cell phones). Sunlight is a type of electromagnetic energy and contains ultraviolet radiation, which causes sunburn/tan, but it is a much lower energy than x-rays

yet still higher than ordinary light. When ionizing radiation reaches a cell it transfers energy to electrons and ejects them from their shell. This causes charged fragments of molecules with un-repaired electrons. These fragments are called FREE RADICALS. They cause the DNA to produce chromosome breaks. When chromosomes can’t repair themselves gene mutations occur. Environmental DNA Damage Certain chemicals damage DNA directly—mind-altering drugs, cyclamates (sugar substitutes) and pesticides (widely used on crops) are just a few examples. We can determine three major sources of environmental damage to chromosomes: 1) High Energy Radiation (x-rays); 2) Low Energy Radiation (UV Light); and 3) Chemicals like drugs (prescription too) and pesticides. How Cancer Forms Mutations in the DNA play a key role in the development of cancer. Though cancer is often thought of, as a single disease more than 200 types exist. All cancers, however, have four characteristics:

20 OCTOBER 2011 • Tampa Bay Wellness

1) uncontrolled cell growth; 2) loss of cell differentiation; 3) invasion of normal tissues and 4) metastasis (spread to multiple sites). Cancer cells arise through a series of mutations in the DNA of normal cells. This may be inherited or caused by the environment. Carcinogens are agents that can initiate and/or promote cancer. Some carcinogens initiate cancer but don’t promote it, like heredity. Something like asbestos acts only as a promoter. These cells may be initiated with other agents such as cigarette smoke or air pollution. If promotion proceeds, damage to the DNA accumulates and cells begin to grow and divide where normal cells would not. If promotion stops, there may be a benign tumor (non-cancerous). If it continues, cells reach a point where they irreversibly become cancer. Malignant tumors then form which invade and kill other tissues or move to other areas of the body (metastasize). Research suggests that 90% of all cancers are environmentally caused. Most cancers can be treated

if detected early. The American Cancer Society gives the following list of the Warning Signs of Cancer: 1. Sores that do not heal 2. Unusual bleeding 3. Changes in a wart or mole 4. A lump or thickening in any tissue 5. Persistent hoarseness or cough 6. Chronic indigestion 7. A change in bowel or bladder functions Breast Cancer At least 10% of all women in the U.S. will develop Breast Cancer. Breast Cancer is common in families. A woman is considered to have a higher risk if she has more than one sister with Breast Cancer. If just her mother or sister developed Breast Cancer then your risk is only moderate. Scientists have discovered a gene located on chromosome 17 that is responsible for the Breast Cancer predisposition. It is estimated that 1 out of every 200 women in the U.S. carry this defect. A test for this marker can be given for high-risk families. Other Factors in Breast Cancer As an energy healer, I often look www.tampabaywellness.com

for an emotional or mental aspect of a disease. Difficulties with the breasts can be the result of not self-nurturing. That love vibration is real and scientists have measured the heart operating at a high 500 hertz. This is a similar vibration to the love energy that can be channeled by all which assists in healing the body. The more that this vibration flows, the higher our organs operate. Depression and anger are of a lesser vibration and in turn make your body operate lower. The energy of the breasts I perceive as an outpouring of love. Most women with Breast Cancer give a lot to others, but forget to love themselves. Characteristics of neglect are: never still, always busy, holding onto childhood hurts (especially mother figure), trapped in an abusive relationship, difficulty receiving love, not having clear boundaries, deep need to be liked and living in the past (bad breakups).

sight, he has the ability to soar to great heights and destroy obstacles on the path to liberation. Practicing eagle pose is an opportunity for us to expand our vision and sharpen our awareness, knowledge and insight. In eagle pose, we literally wrap ourselves in our self in grace and self-effort, so that with clear vision, we are able to see all the traps we have bound ourselves into. Traps could be situations such as financial problems, strapping yourself with debt in order to collect material wealth; not being able to let go of a bad relationship; or staying in a job you are not happy in, among others.

Narrative by Cindy Mastry

In most cases we are not powerless against cancer. If we start a self-care regimen (including detoxifying) and keep the energy moving, we can overcome problems before they advance to symptoms.

Eagle pose helps to bring about mental clarity and focus while bringing harmony to the body and mind. It strengthens the muscles of the legs, tones the nerves and loosens the joints of the hips and shoulders. It can help with sciatica, asthma, hand trembling and low back pain.

A simple way to start prevention TODAY is to ditch the tight and underwire bras. The lymphatic system resides all around and under the breasts. It then reaches up to the armpits. The lymph is the garbage of our bodies and must be moved out. This is why anti-perspirants are also cancer causing. We need to sweat out toxins. The lymphatic system needs to be unrestricted and free flowing. Bras clog the lymphatic system. Remove them whenever you can. Stop wearing tight or underwire bras. Try sports and relaxed nursing bras.  On October 16, The Yoga Loft in Ybor will host a workshop on Breast Awareness. In this class, we will learn many massage and energy tapping techniques to move lymph and release stuck energies. Join us! www.yogalofttampa.com

Begin in a standing position. Bending both knees, cross the right leg over the left, ideally wrapping the right foot around the left calf. It’s OK if the right foot doesn’t go around the calf, it can just reach to the side or the toes can be placed on the floor next to the left foot to assist in balancing. Once the legs are set, place the left elbow under the right elbow bending both, possibly even twisting the forearms around each other with the palms together, fingers pointing upward. Don’t worry if your palms don’t touch, do what you can. Balance in this pose for several steady breaths, maintaining a focus on a fixed point in front of you. Repeat on the opposite side. The ancient yogis say if you are unclear about a situation, go to eagle pose, as it will consume all of your attention and focus. Nourishing Foods. Julia - The act of eating unites our interior world with the elements of nature - earth, water, fire, air, and space. The choice of what, when and how we prepare our meals as well as our self- awareness all contribute to vitality. Ayurveda offers a practical understanding of the energetic make-up of foods. It recommends tastes such as bitter in the summer because of its cooling properties and spicy or heating foods in the winter. Nourishing food means the nutrients are absorbed by all our tissues. Ayurveda conceives of seven layers of tissue: From chyme our blood plasma is nourished, then muscle, fat, bone, nerves, reproductive tissue, and finally ojas – the essence of our digestive process – that which radiates as vibrant well-being in our aura. Jill - Nourishing foods are alive, grown from the earth, untouched by chemicals. The richer the soil, the more nutrition the food will contain. Let common sense guide you. Begin by using cold-pressed oils, eating more fruits and vegetables, whole grains, beans, nuts and seeds. Some combinations may not agree with your constitution, but at least you will be starting a conversation with your body.

One Sit-Down Meal Daily. Julia - The very ritual of preparing a meal awakens all our senses with the delight of colors, delectable smells and the texture of the food. We relate to food through nature’s elements: Earth relates to the sense of smell; Water to taste; Fire to vision; Air to touch and Space to sound. Enjoying a sit-down meal at the same

time daily establishes a life-style of regularity. Ayurveda teaches thatroutine is the most powerful way to reduce aging. Even for those who work 10 hours a day the sensory play of preparing a meal and the satisfaction of sitting to eat provides time to rest and rejuvenate with nourishment for the body and mind.

In Florida such persons may enjoy walking by the sea under the cooling rays of the moon – moon bathing instead of sunbathing. It is important to know your personal constitution with the assistance of a practicing Ayurvedic therapist so that you can then wisely choose the type of exercise that balances your system.

Jill - In the average day, meal time is the only time when we can just stop working, doing homework, watching TV, being at the computer and finally just sit down and focus on our own family. Nurturing each other is a value to offer to those you love. Make preparation and sharing a meal a fun family affair. When you cook and prepare foods for those you love, the love actually gives the meals more food value. This can’t be proven, but most of us have experienced it when we taste the food made by people who really enjoy taking care of others.

Jill - Staying too long in one position causes fatigue and tense muscles contributing to headaches, other pain and even mental stress. Physical exercise helps control weight, keeps our hearts healthy, stretches our muscles and keeps our joints free from pain and stiffness. Stretching with deep breathing relieves tension, as does more intense aerobic activity like playing sports, jogging, or dancing. Physical activity can improve sleep and boost immunity. Making some kind of movement for 30 minutes to an hour a day part of a regular personal routine sets the foundation for a healthy and active

Movement Julia - Ayurveda offers guidelines to choose the most appropriate type of exercise based on your unique elemental constitution – those with predominant fire in their constitution would avoid intense heating activity such as “hot yoga” or running under the hot sun.

Nurturing Ourselves Everyday This article presents 5 guidelines for maintaining well-being on a daily basis. It provides the best of two perspectives – east and west – to assist you to live with health, contentment, and personal fulfillment. Each of these guidelines starts with an ayurvedic approach by a trained practitioner followed by natural healing recommendations as practiced by a contemporary lifestyle coach. lifestyle, and it feels really good. Regular exercise makes aging becomes a graceful transition and some people find new friends and more fun in their pursuit of movement.

Bathing Julia - Whether you wash in a shower, swim in the sea or pour water on your body from a lota, the ritual of bathing brings a feeling of renewal for the day ahead. Bathing includes skin care in many ways. Ayurveda emphasizes that the skin is our largest organ of absorption. Just as we choose foods best suited to our constitution, so may we nourish our skin through our choice of body oil. Ayurveda’s herbal oils reduce the effects of aging, joint deterioration, muscle weakness, and all auto- immune imbalances. By routinely oiling your body as part of your ritual of bathing your immune system is renewed and strengthened in every way.

Jill - Since the beginning of time, the art of bathing in water has been essential to one's good health and peace of mind. Before you bathe, begin by ten minutes of Skin Brushing. Using a soft body brush, begin at your feet and again at your hands, working your way with soft slow strokes toward your heart. Go in a clockwise direction on your abdominal area and your chest. This brushing stimulates your lymphatic system, blood circulation, skin exfoliation and just feels good. Bathing is a luxurious experience. Once a week, make time for a long bath. Try adding Epsom salts, bentonite clay, aromatherapy oil or all three. Turn off the phones, put on some relaxing music and soft candlelight. Take this time for your personal and private date with yourself. Completely relax, breathe deeply and let your body heal itself through this amazingly simple process.

Spiritual Practice. Julia - Ayurveda puts equal

Free Meditation The Truth ~ It is not “The Secret” anymore. Come and learn what meditation is all about and experience the great energy of meditation.

Jill - Meditation, which has been practiced for thousands of years, was originally meant to help deepen the understanding of the sacred forces of life. Today, meditation is commonly used for stress reduction. It's simple and free, and you can practice meditation wherever you are — whether you're out for a walk, riding the bus or waiting at the doctor's office. It doesn’t necessarily involve having to sit in a lotus posture with your eyes closed. Just attempt to focus your attention

on your breath. Your goal is to slow down the river of jumbled thoughts that crowd your mind and cause stress. This is one great “pill” that has only positive side effects. (JS) 

Fear

The Siren Call to Change

W

hen most people think of fear, they conjure pictures of screaming women in slasher movies, horrible mindless villains, or heroes chased by zombies. But, for most of us, fear feels more like an insidious virus that our minds and emotions create to stop us from moving forward. Fear is the mind/ego's way of saying "I'm not going there! I like being right where I am. I'm familiar with my current state. If I plunk myself right down here, nothing can hurt me because I already know this territory. I'm not worthy and if I stretch myself, I might get rejected." Fear means you are not willing to venture into the unknown, not willing to take risk, not willing to accept and adjust to change. Fear is about ignoring imperatives to change, putting your head in the sand and expecting the problem to go away, allowing others to control your life because you may not have the courage or confidence to control your own. And fear always leaves your life messy, miserable, and myopic You may not actually be aware of the grip fear has over you. And even if you are, you sometimes feel powerless to change because of past, tightly held beliefs. But fear can be your ally. If you feel it, it is a siren call to change!

When you bump up against fear, you know you are called to move forward, be bolder, take a wellcalculated risk, flow with the change imposed on you, make the course correction you've been resisting, cross the seemingly impenetrable barrier, strike out on your own, act in your own self-interest, or reach for freedom!

2. Affirming "I am FEAR-LESS!" Whenever I get overwhelmed by fear, I repeat this affirmation again and again. I repeat it with power as if I were brandishing a wooden stake in order to ward off a vampire! My confidence grows and the fear lessens as I remind myself that I have no reason to fear because I am a fearless being with the Ultimate Support System!

So how can you move beyond it to something better when fear is at your door?

3. Get clear. If part of your fear is confusion about what steps to take or where to head, spend time in silence asking questions. Reach out to someone else who can coach you through the process of getting clear or put your options in writing. These are just some of the ways you can get focused, so that with clear intention you can begin loosening the grip of fear.

1. The flipside of fear is faith. If you are experiencing fear, then something is pressing you to change. Where does that urgency for change originate in your heart, in your spirit, in the Universe? If it originates in the Universe, your heart and your spirit are indeed pushing you forward. Let go and trust. Allow your faith to spring forward. Ask if this change is in your highest good. If the answer is "yes," then trust the Universe to allow the benefits to unfold once you give up resisting and start moving forward. If the pressure is mounting from outside-job loss, relationship breakup, and so on-again ask if this is in your highest good? These conditions are the Universe speaking to you in the dialect of "loving change and redirection." Trust and go with the flow.

24 OCTOBER 2011 • Tampa Bay Wellness

4. What is the worst thing that could happen if you do move forward? Usually you will have built up this fear into something greater than it could possibly ever be in reality. When you really look at the worst thing that could happen, it's usually not all that terrible. Then it's a simple realization that moving forward easily outweighs your realistic worst-case scenario. VoilĂ , paralysis unblocked! 5. Bring it out into the light. The more you look at fear from an objective standpoint, as if you were not in

your body-bring it out, hold it to the light, examine why it's making you crazy-the more power you have to eradicate the fear of it you are harboring. Think of yourself as the sleuth bringing the clues out into the open so you can solve the case. 6. Recalibrate your limiting beliefs and go for expansion. Look at the beliefs that are causing you to hold onto your fear. What's real, what's not? Make a list of these limiting concepts. Then list the opposite possibility-the expansionist and unlimited belief that you could be holding-the one that would enable you to move forward with confidence and courage. 7. Stop thinking about what you're giving up and start looking at what you are potentially gaining. What's the upside? This is an easy one! Ultimately moving toward your highest good will always have a greater potential upside than staying where you are, or giving up what you currently have. 8. Talk it out. Find a forward-thinking and positive friend, someone who is used to stepping through fear, or perhaps a counselor or coach. Talk about what you are feeling. Ask that person to tell you stories of how he or she found success by moving beyond fear. Be inspired by other peoples courageous acts. www.tampabaywellness.com

9. Fear is just thoughts and emotions-those can be changed! Fear is just something you created in your mind. It is not real.
