FDA rule could rock supplement industry BY MATT CANHAM The Salt Lake Tribune Washington • The most passionate consumers and the most aggressive nutritional supplement companies are always on the lookout for the next breakthrough pill or juice.

Camp For The

Soul Come join us for the 19th annual SouthEastern Spiritual Conference!

And while these products are not as strictly controlled as drugs, the supplement industry is required to submit safety information to the federal government before rolling out a new product. The problem is many don’t. Daniel Fabricant, the director of the Division of Dietary Supplement Programs at the Food and Drug Administration, estimates that 60,000 ingredients are sold as dietary supplements in the United States, but the FDA has received only 700 new dietary ingredient applications since the last major supplement law passed in 1994. “That is 700 total. That is not successful,” Fabricant said. Congress agrees, which is why it required the FDA to spell out what it expects from the supplement industry by the end of June and the outcome of this “guidance document” could be huge. It’s possible the FDA could require health food stores to pull thousands of products off the shelves as its scientists make sure the products won’t harm consumers. The new dietary ingredient reviews only apply to ingredients introduced to the market after October 1994, when the law was signed. Any product sold before then is grandfathered in and considered safe. The 75-day reviews have nothing to do with the potential health benefits of supplements. They are only to determine if there is any potential for health problems. www.tampabaywellness.com

Apple & Carrot Gluten Free Breakfast Cake: VitaMixed

A Love Affair I’ve never been ashamed to admit that there is a special place in my heart for my kitchen tools, and especially my VitaMix. Maybe the way some people love their big screen tv, or the way others adore their Gucci bags. If given the choice between a beautiful Louis Vitton and a brand new VitaMix, I’d take the VitaMix. Why? Because I can make this. Yes, you really just put the apple and carrot into the blender, whirl it around and in less than a minute you have low-fat cake batter packed with whole foods. No grating. No dicing.

No food mill. Just yummy, slightly sweet, nutrition packed goodness. Like I said – slightly sweet. If you like your breakfast cakes sweeter, add a little more palm sugar or 1/4 – 1/2 teaspoon of clear liquid stevia. Long Term Moistness If you read Celiac Family, you know that Heather’s litmus test for a good gluten-free baked good is that it stays moist and crumble-free when sitting out on the counter. This passes with flying colors. I left it on the counter for 5 days – that’s how long it took us to eat it. It was just as good on day 5 as it was on day 1.

Apple & Carrot Breakfast Cake Serves 6 – 9. Adapted from The VitaMix Cookbook

Ingredients: 2 cups sorghum flour 1/2 cup palm sugar 2 teaspoons baking soda 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon xanthan gum 3/4 cup egg white substitute or 6 egg whites or 3 eggs 1 tablespoon vanilla extract 2 apples, quartered (leave the peels on) 1 cup of carrots, peeled and chopped (about 3 medium carrots)

Preparation:

• Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. • Prepare an 8×8 baking pan with cooking spray. By Amy Green - Author of "Simply Sugar and Gluten-Free: 180 Easy and Delicious Recipes You Can Make in 20

Are Screens making kids

fat, dumb &

aggressive?

N

ational author, Kim John Payne, was in Clearwater this past month to give a lecture and workshop based on his best-selling book, Simplicity Parenting. The event, attended by parents from around the Tampa Bay area, was held at the Octagon Arts Center. “There is an undeclared war on children,” stated Payne, as he made the case for helping to bring calm into children’s lives by changing four aspects of family life: de-cluttering the environment, bringing predictability through rhythm, allowing down time by avoiding over-scheduling and, filtering out the adult world of media and conversation.

• Whisk together sorhgum flour, palm sugar, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and xanthan gum until evenly combined. • Place egg whites, vanilla, apples, and carrots into the VitaMix. Start on low and quickly increase to Variable 10 while using the tamper to push the apples and carrots into the blades. Switch to High and blend for 20-3o seconds until thoroughly mixed. It will be thick. • Fold the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients by hand. Pour into prepared pan and bake for 25 minutes or until a toothpick tests clean. • Top with freshly whipped cream, homemade yogurt, or cream cheese frosting. Minutes or Less", published by Ulysses Press, 2011. You may visit her blog at: www.simplysugarandglutenfree.com

The audience was astounded to hear that eight million children in the U.S. are on the drugs of Ritalin and Aderol , making the U.S., at 91%, the world’s highest consumer of these drugs and that an average 8-yearold has over 7 ½ hours of screen time a day , counting television,

computers, video games, I-Phones and cell phones. “Screens,” Payne declared, “are making kids fat, dumb and aggressive.” He gave examples of research which demonstrated the harm to the brain that comes from over -exposure to screens. Specifically, when a child is exposed to 8 hours of screen time per week, the movement between the two brain hemispheres is drastically inhibited and the more hours of screen time per week, the less brain activity. “Are we devolving?” Payne asked. Payne stated that more and more children today are exhibiting the multiple symptoms of PTSD, a sign that they are overwhelmed, overexposed, over-scheduled and overstressed. “We are raising a generation of borderline sociopaths,” he warned, noting his experiences with children who demonstrate no remorse for rude and even aggressive behavior. The “Life-Force”of Health

Juicing By “The Father of Juicing” Jay Kordich

F

resh, living (sun-baked) vegetable and fruit juices are a veritable liquid powerhouse rich in natural plant enzymes, phytonutrients, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. It is the number one KEY to longevity and vitality. We like to think fresh juicing is like taking a bullet train to your destination instead of walking. Making fresh juices delicately extracts these living nutrients which are literally bound within the plant as the juicing process releases them into juice form. For many years in our health seminars we would pick up a carrot and say hey, can anybody squeeze the juice out of this carrot with their own hands? Of course it’s impossible to do, but did you know carrots have more juice in them than oranges do? The mystery of juicing still baffles us, even after over sixty years of teaching this subject, every time we make fresh vegetable juices, we continue to be enlightened. This is the beauty of life. To be on an enlightened path everyday discovering newer ways to become healthier, wiser, more loving and tender sustains and invites youth no matter what the age. You see, juicing delivers 100% of the nutrients through its pre-digested form. It’s pre-digested because we don’t have to go through the

digestive processes in order to benefit from the nutrients we are consuming. That’s why we say: “It’s the juice of the fiber that feeds you.” Juicing gives you the highest density of nutrients per calorie. Fiber is essential for proper bowel function, yes, but we recommend eating a diet high in all fibrous forms such as fruits, soaked nuts and grains and seeds, vegetables and herbs. Combine these food with a big dose of vegetable juices on a daily basis, and now you have the power of LIFE in your hands! Can you tell we are excited about juicing? Absolutely. Can juicing add vitality and energy and especially longevity into your life as well? Absolutely. Ultimately and collectively we will become a superiorly healthy Nation as we should be. We are the richest Nation in the world, yet almost at the bottom of the wrung in health. To us, this is a travesty! What we find interesting is that it never ceases to amaze us when people taste fresh vegetable juices for the first time, their eyes widen and a surprised grin appears on their face immediately. Then they completely finish off the juice in the glass, asking for more. We have never seen a person tell us that freshly made vegetable juices taste bad. The challenge is not really the taste, but

learning and integrating all of the techniques and skills of making juicing a daily habit at home. We want you to intimately know this word: life-force! The life-force from foods is what’s missing in our diets, in a huge way. Most of our meals are completely devoid of the life-force. Sometimes you will hear us say, “dead food is devoid of the life-force”, and it’s true. The more life-force you can consume, the more energy, vitality and longevity is assured. One of the best reasons for juicing is because of the immediate feeling of energy you feel. At the same time you will feel a natural calm, because your body is getting the nourishment it craves. Over the long run, your stamina will likely increase, and your bowel habits will change dramatically for the better. Everyone should be eliminating at least twice a day. When you are juicing on a regular basis, you are guaranteed to have no troubles in that department. What’s more, your skin will probably start to improve, including losing a ton of excess weight. Some people ask: why should we juice fruit when we can purchase juices in the store? You can buy orange juice, for instance, right in the dairy case. Yet scientific research Continued on page 14

Juicing The “LifeForce” of Health

The Father of Juicing’s (and his Wife’s)

Future Plans Jay Kordich is 88 years old, going on 40. Linda, his wife of 25 years, is 54 going on 25. What better time for these living testaments to the power of healthy living to embark on a three-year plan to teach the world how to live longer, more vital lives largely by consuming a combined two daily quarts of fresh fruit and vegetable juices? They hope to improve the world population’s health through sales of the Jay Kordich PowerGrindPro™ combined grinder and extractor and their “Live Foods Live Bodies” book and accompanying CDs and DVDs which, in addition to information about juicing, includes recipes, cleansing programs and cooking techniques to help readers design a “living kitchen.” The PowerGrindPro’s slower-than-normal grinding blade, the couple maintains, preserves more fruit, vegetable and plant nutrients, and enzymes, than other juicers and extractors. The appliance’s six international patents are key components to their three-year worldwide plan. “Our vision is to build the number one juicer company in the world through PowerGrindPro, our book and supporting infomercials,” Linda Kordich says. “Our goal is to make juice and juicing part of everyday life,” Linda says. On his website, Jay Kordich states “(his) mission is to motivate, teach and inspire people on a global level to live a healthy life by consuming more fresh juices on a daily basis.” In conversation, he extols human-nature interaction as the key to a healthy longevity. www.jaykordich.com 14 JUNE 2011 • Tampa Bay Wellness

shows 90 percent of fruit’s food value lies not in the flesh, but in the peelings and just below the surface. And that is the real juicing advantage. Juicing releases nutrients that are normally unavailable because of our inability to eat food parts that are indigestible, like the rind of a watermelon or the white fiber of an orange. In addition to this fact, that orange juice loses a huge percentage of the natural vitamin C within just minutes of extraction. Therefore, it’s almost as if you need to have your mouth up on the spout of the juicer as the orange juice is coming out! One of the most important benefits of fruit and vegetable juicing is the benefit of the trace and major minerals heartily available. The most amazing story of photosynthesis can well explain the importance of these magical minerals. The mystery begins with soil, the sun and the seeds of plants. Plants literally drink minerals up from the soil. If you could grab a handful of rich earth, eat it, and absorb the body’s full requirement of iron, calcium, phosphorous, zinc, and boron, you would never have to buy food. But you can’t. Only plants, with their roots down in the ground, can draw up the minerals and store that vital power in the plant’s cell walls—and in the form of juice, the absorption level goes through the roof. Instead of absorbing only twenty or thirty percent of the nutrients, you are absorbing 100% of the nutrients, into your

bloodstream, immediately. Do you see? This is a very important statement, and I want you to read and re-read this again, so you understand the reasons why we need plant-life and why it’s so imperative we consume large quantities of plant-life daily either through juicing or through our meals. Live foods also are bursting with what we call the ’sparkplugs of life’….. plant derived enzymes. The difference between living foods and cooked, devitalized foods is whether they contain this essential ingredient. This is one of the keys to longevity! Cooking foods, even placing them in boiling water, virtually kills all enzymes. Any food that is cooked over 118 degrees almost confirms all of the natural ‘life-force’ is gone, meaning the enzymes have all gone up in smoke, literally. Why is this important? Enzymes initiate, direct, or accelerate virtually every chemical reaction required for life. All natural foods consumed in their living and/or raw state are bursting with these life-giving natural plant enzymes, helping digestion and better absorption of our foods. Most fruits and vegetables also contain phytochemicals (phyto- means “plant”); they are the pigments and compounds that give plants their individual colors and flavors. Back in the 1940’s throughout the entire 1980’s I used to say that these powerhouses www.tampabaywellness.com

of nutrients were ‘yet unidentified’ nutrients because science hadn’t defined yet what these phytochemicals or antioxidants were. It was only in the 1990’s where the medical establishment and dedicated scientists finally caught up with the exploding information that was coming to the forefront about the healing powers of plant-life. Clinical trials now have established that plantlife has powerful antioxidant activity and may lower the risk for certain types of cancer. Some phytochemicals bind physically to cell walls, thereby preventing pathogens to lodge themselves inside. Others, such as lycopene, can help reduce heart disease, and lower cholesterol levels. Lycopene is easily found in tomatoes, and as you will find out, we have some spectacular tonics made out of fresh beefstake tomatoes combined with lemons, spinach, carrots and celery, making for a powerhouse tonic rich in a rainbow of coloured nutrients! Most vegetarians and vegans are not taking advantage of the Power of Juicing. Once they start to incorporate juicing into their diets, they too will find that their vegetarian diets had been missing this key ingredient, and their energy will soar once they start incorporating fresh fruit and vegetable juicing into their daily diets. Granted, vegans and vegetarians are way ahead of the game, but they will be amazed just how much farther along the path to vitality they will find themselves in once they start to incorporate some of these vitally important juicing habits into their daily lifestyle. Let’s also not forget teenagers who recently have become inspired to eat a vegetarian diet, yet are eating the wrong kids of foods such as Twinkies and crackers for some of their meals. Granted let’s give them credit for understanding the benefits of vegetarianism and/or veganism, but if they are the only vegetarian in the family, it can lend itself to a bit of a disaster as far as support is concerned. “Plants yield life via oxygen and with food created just for us,” he says. “In turn, we expel carbon dioxide which feeds the plants. This is the circle of healthy life that my wife and I will continue to promote in the years ahead.” ●

3 Nutrition The Qi Quality of Food & Animal Foods in the Diet

To briefly recap the Traditional Chinese Medicine recommended diet from Part 2: Whole foods, with about 80-90% of the diet as vegetables, cooked whole grains and beans/legumes; 5-10% fruit and nuts; and 5% animal products.

The Qi Quality of Food: Another important factor in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) nutrition is the quality of energy (Qi) that exists in our food. We are nourished not only by the molecular structure of foods, but also by their Qi. The better Qi quality in the food, the more beneficial it is. The quality of a plant’s Qi is dependent on its health in life, which is determined by the quality of the soil, air, water and sunlight in which it grows. The quality of an animal’s Qi is also dependent on its health (physical and mental) during its life, and is directly linked to the quality of environment, food and water provided, as well as the quality of its interactions with its environment and with others. How it’s harvested/ slaughtered, shipped, stored and 16 JUNE 2011 • Tampa Bay Wellness

prepared also affect its Qi. The fresher, healthier and less processed a food is, the more beneficial Qi it contains and imparts to our bodies. The more time that lapses between harvest and consumption, and the more refined or processed, the less beneficial Qi the food contains. This is why it is best to eat whole foods which are seasonal and locally grown. This is also why it is better to avoid “seedless” varieties, and those that have been irradiated or genetically modified. Animal-based Foods in TCM: The TCM recommended diet includes small amounts of animalbased foods. They are not the central part of any meal; instead, they are an occasional accent in meals that are vegetable and whole-grain based. Why so little? Because animal-based foods are rich and heavy, and according to TCM, this makes them likely to promote pathogenic Dampnessformation in the body, contributing to a myriad of diseases. (See Part 2 for explanation of Dampness). But, animal-based foods are not entirely excluded from the TCM diet, because it is thought that, in small amounts, they help build more Qi and Blood in the body. The TCM diet is what I most often recommend, at least initially; it is far

superior to what many have been eating, so the majority of those who adopt it experience marked health improvements. However, for myself, my family, and for those seeking a more profound level of health, I part from TCM on the issue of animal foods, and prefer a 100% plant-based diet, with no animal-based foods at all. This is due to 3 main health-related reasons: The poor Qi quality of animalbased foods: Current animal-rearing practices are so unhealthy that, in my opinion, the Qi in these products has been rendered more harmful than helpful. The latest research shows that animal-based foods contribute to several disease processes in the human body, including heart disease and cancer. Modern nutritional research has found that consuming animal-based food is unnecessary for good health. Let’s explore these, one by one:

Reason 1: The Poor Qi Quality of Animal Foods: Up until about 60 years ago, all animal food products were inherently organic, free-range, hormone-free,

antibiotic-free, and grass-fed. Because food animals ate their natural diet of grass, meat was rich in omega-3 fats (which help reduce inflammation). They were also leaner and, from a TCM view, their meat had better Qi, because they lived much healthier and happier lives than their modernday counterparts. In stark contrast, the meat, dairy and eggs that are available today, as a result of being fed an unnatural diet of grain, sugar, soybeans and animalbyproducts are filled with omega-6 fats (which promote inflammation), have a higher percentage of saturated fat, and fewer beneficial elements. Many livestock, poultry and egglaying hens do not have access to fresh air or sunlight. They are also kept in such large numbers, small cages, and close quarters that they lack the ability to stretch their limbs, turn around, or perform natural behaviors. All of these conditions create physical and psychological abnormalities leading to disturbing aberrant behaviors toward themselves and each other. These animals are also unable to move away from their own or each other’s excrement, creating hygiene problems. To combat the spread of infection, ranchers use frequent doses www.tampabaywellness.com

of antibiotics on all of their animals, sick or not, which contributes to the development of antibiotic-resistant super-bacteria, and exposes people who consume meat and dairy to these antibiotics and super-bacteria. Because meat and dairy producers make more money by increasing production volume and speed, food animals are treated with various growth hormones. We ingest these with their meat or dairy, and they wreak havoc with our bodies, including our endocrine (hormonal) systems. These animals live very unnatural, unhealthy, and unhappy lives. In my opinion, the Qi coming from these foods cannot be healthy enough to benefit our own Qi, but instead places a burden on our health.

What about Organic, Grass-Fed or Free-Range? While these are certainly better, there are some factors to consider. Hundreds of labels can be found in grocery aisles for “healthier” animal food products. It is difficult to know what they really mean. For example: Several companies have created their own agencies to certify their meat organic, setting and breaking their own standards as they see fit. Even if the label says

www.tampabaywellness.com

“USDA Certified Organic,” (no antibiotics or growth hormones), it doesn’t necessarily mean grass-fed, free-range, or given the environment to perform natural behaviors. Likewise, if the package says “grassfed”, it doesn’t necessarily mean organic, free-range, or even that the animal was fed only grass. Many cattle start out on pasture for their first 6 - 12 months before spending the rest of their lives on a feedlot; some companies label this “grass-fed.” With the exception of live poultry, the USDA has no regulations on the terms “free-range” or “cage-free,” so all egg, beef, pork, and lamb producers can use these labels freely. The only requirement for “free-range” poultry is that it had access to outdoors for some unspecified amount of time each day. As you can see, no label addresses everything, and all labels are subject to confusion.

What about Seafood? Farm-raised sea foods are also raised in overcrowded conditions, routinely medicated with antibiotics, and fed unnatural diets that change the balance of beneficial nutrients. In fact, farm-raised salmon are so unhealthy that their flesh is grey, so dye is injected to make them appear pink. Even wild-caught seafood is risky, since nearly all fish-supporting waters are now contaminated with mercury, dioxins, and hundreds of other toxins from industrial pollution.

Reason 2: Animal-based foods are harmful:

Research shows that eating animalbased foods, even in small amounts, contributes to many diseases common in Western culture, including heart disease and cancer. Here are just a few examples: In his book, The China Study, T. Colin Campbell, PhD states, “In rural China, animal protein intake averages only 7.1 gr/day whereas Americans average a whopping 70 gr/day….Even these small amounts of animal-based food in rural China raised the risk for Western diseases.” Dr. Campbell also found, that casein, the most abundant protein in cow’s milk, is a strong promoter of cancer cells, in all stages of cancer development. Dr. Neal Barnard, reports on a Japanese study, that women who follow meat-based diets are eight times more likely to develop breast cancer than women on a plant-based diet. Harvard studies show that regular meat consumption triples colon cancer risk while a Cambridge University study links dairy products to an increased risk of ovarian cancer. Studies of the Seventh-day Adventists found that those who avoided meat altogether showed significant reductions in cancer risk as compared to those who ate modest amounts of meat.

Animal-based foods are Unnecessary: “It is the position of the American Dietetic Association that appropriately planned vegetarian diets, including…vegan diets, are healthful, nutritionally adequate and….are appropriate for individuals during all stages of the lifecycle, including pregnancy, lactation, infancy, childhood, and adolescence, and for athletes.”

Dr. Benjamin Spock, in the latest edition of his world-famous book, Baby and Child Care, advocates a vegetarian diet for children, and no longer recommends dairy products after the age of 2. He says that children who grow up getting nutrition from plant foods rather than meats are less likely to develop weight problems, diabetes, high blood pressure and some forms of cancer. Good sources of amino acids (protein) are green and leafy vegetables (yes, really! Green plants provide protein to muscular animals such as bulls and horses). Protein is also abundant in beans, lentils, grains, and nuts. Rich sources of calcium and iron are found in green and leafy vegetables and beans. Omega-3 fatty acids can be obtained from flax seeds, chia seeds, walnuts, and extracts of algae (the type most used in infant formulas).

Conclusion: While I greatly respect Traditional Chinese Medicine’s nutritional tenants, and use most of them in my clinic, my modern-day perspective has me conclude, for the reasons listed above, that animal foods are unnecessary, and actually dangerous (especially those that are available today) to optimal health. Instead, I prefer a whole-food, 100% plant-based diet. If you would like to learn more about plant-based diets, several great books, websites and videos are listed on my blog at www.healthy-tidbits.com under “Educational Resources – Nutrition”. xybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate... those are just some of the chemicals found in sunscreens. Not only is it hard to pronounce many of the ingredients in sunscreens, but it’s also a challenge to know which one is best for you and your family. That’s where the non-profit, research based, Environmental Working Group can help. EWG is out with its 2011 Sunscreen Guide. The consumer advocacy group studied more than 1,700 sun care products... everything from the best beach and kids’ sunscreens to top rated, SPF make-up. Shopping for a safe and effective sunscreen can be tough. EWG found only 1 out of every 5 brands met their safety and effectiveness guidelines. Without any Food and Drug Administration regulation, EWG found toxic chemicals and ineffective ingredients, that according to the Centers for Disease Control, can end up in our bloodstream. As a new mom and a melanoma survivor (a dermatologist spotted a suspicious mole on

stomach when I was in my 20’s) I try to find a good balance to protect my family from sunburns but also lower our exposure to harsh chemicals found in many products like sunscreens. While the researchers are still studying how these chemicals impact us, I try to wear sun protective clothing, avoid harsh afternoon sunlight and use non-chemical sunscreen only where I need it. Synthetic fabrics typically offer more sun protection than a cotton shirt. I’ve also bought a few swimsuit cover-ups from Coolibar. It’s easy to find sun protection clothing for kids at stores like Target. When it comes to buying sunscreen, EWG recommends avoiding chemicals including oxybenzone and retinyl palmitate (sometimes listed as vitamin A), choosing creams over sprays and wearing sun protection clothing, hats and sunglasses. EWG also prefers non-chemical sunscreens that contain zinc or titanium to avoid exposure to any potential hormone disruptor that may be found in a chemical sunscreen.

Keep in mind, some of these non-chemical sunscreens can be extra greasy and appear white on your skin--they provide a physical sunscreen. That’s why you have to find a balance that works best for your family. A combination of clothing, sun screen and shade works for me. I typically only wear a powdered mineral make-up on my face, neck and chest because I’m rarely in direct sunlight (unless I’m sitting outside during the morning hours when the sun is not as strong). EWG recognizes that some people prefer to wear a chemical sunscreen. Some of the EWG top rated brands include: Australian Gold Sheer Coverage Lotion with InvisiDry SPF 15, Beyond Coastal Active Face Stick SPF 30, Bull Frog Active SPF 30 You can see how your favorite sunscreen rates and check out the entire list of EWG recommended sunscreens on my natural health website: Heather’s Natural Health. ●

Marine

Vegetables

By Dr. Joette Giovinco, WTVT-TV FOX 13 Medical Reporter

R

ead the menu at any Japanese restaurant – along with the Nori seaweed you’ll get with your sushi or hand wrapped roll, you can also opt to have a seaweed salad.

But our exposure to seaweed doesn’t stop there. Algae, or the microscopic forms of seaweed are found in the foods we eat everyday. That includes food additive carrageenan, found in meats and dairy products like ice cream. Here’s another one – an omega 3 fatty acid DHA – you see proudly displayed on baby formula and soy milk labels – it’s also likely – from seaweed! Globally – it’s a multibillion dollar industry! But venture into the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico for a dip and the itchy clingy sea plant becomes something we want to avoid – much less – consume. That disconnect is the precisely the reason Sarasota resident, Heather Fortner, has made it her mission, to teach us the benefits – of “marine vegetables” (AKA seaweed!)

Ulva 20 JUNE 2011 • Tampa Bay Wellness

While much of the seaweed we eat in our favorite Asian dishes is from the colder waters of the North, Heather was introduced to warm water varieties while living in Hawaii. It’s the same kinds she finds here, along our sandy gulf beaches. Wade out a few feet into the breaking waters and you’ll find a delicacy that’s both free and nutritious. Just like the vegetables grown in soil, the vitamin content of seaweed can vary. But species like porphyra (a northern species) is especially rich in vitamins A, B1, B2 and a vitamin not found in land plants – B12. Another health benefit - the mineral content. From sodium and potassium, to iron, calcium, magnesium and zinc – there are roughly sixteen different minerals in marine algae. Iodine – a trace element essential for thyroid function – is also found in levels thought to keep iodine deficiency at a minimum – in many Eastern cultures. And then there’s fiber. A must for our digestion and diets. Today, Heather offers up a taste of

the varieties of seaweed that wash up on shore this time of year. Her zipper mesh bag – the same kind you use to wash your delicates – is brimming with green and brown – veggies. The first one she admits is quite chewy. It’s called Ulva. Its green leaves resemble lettuce. Heather tells us it’s a great addition to cooked soups. Then there’s a dark green tree like bundle that’s nicknamed “dead man’s fingers.” Its technical name is Codium. This one tastes like a green leafy vegetable – Swiss Chard. This spongy spectacle can be used raw and in salads. Lastly is a member of the brown algae – Cladosiphon. It resembles an herb – and it’s taste – is far more delicate. So what’s the down side? Heather says not all seaweed is edible. Some can contain Arsenic and too much iodine, can also cause problems. Also, you have to be mindful of any pollution or bacteria in the water before consuming it.

CODIUM

To help others better harvest their way through the weeds – Heather offers courses – a kind of seaweed 101. If the trend catches on, along with our famous Florida grouper and shell fish, local restaurants could someday be asking – would you like a side of sea-weed with your order? ● Dr. Joette Giovinco is the medical reporter for FOX 13. are about to make can be accomplished. We need a sign that it is doable!

Creating A Change To

Prosperity

Even given the clearest knowledge, many individuals are reluctant to make changes that could contribute to their prosperity. Sadly, it is only after experiencing personal crises, that we find reason to believe that change is possible. Through personal experience, we discover a reason to believe. More often than not, we must experience what we do not want in our lives before we know that we don’t want it! Historically, it is new ideas, solidly based in truth, that have opened us up to entirely new ways of change and possibility. We need to be able to see a reason to believe! Finally, we have arrived at an evolutionary path, where we’re learning that financial prosperity is possible, is desirable, and is available. We are now on the path of believing our deservability! Financial prosperity is available to those of us who are willing to believe it is, willing to believe it is worth making the change and willing to believe that change is possible! The key to our prosperity is that we must recognize that we can apply our beliefs. The imbedded past fears and doubts can be released by simply being willing to change, be willing to accept the ensuing chaos, to be willing to allow our new perspective to “find itself” a new pattern within us!

By Rev. Marcella Zinner Moving from one level to another, or shifting from one perspective to another, requires a period of chaos in between. In the area of financial prosperity, we have imbedded doubts. Prosperity requires change. Change requires collapse of the existing pattern and the ensuing chaos that a new pattern and greater order can be found. Every benefit is preceded by a time of unsettled change. Our imbedded prosperity “deserva- bility” requires deep clearing and deep collapse. The shift, collapse, and ensuing chaos pattern is fearful, unsettling, and unknown. The unknown is what is frightening. However, it is worth it once we get on the other side of the chaos. Consider that life has an inherent blueprint of wellness, always present, even when it appears that chaos has replaced order. Healthy patterns find one another and re-establish themselves. So the dis-harmony or chaos has no “blueprint”, it cannot “find itself” and re-assemble. It simply disappears and the result is that the dis-harmony or chaos is “healed”. Beliefs that threaten us- create fear or doubt in us- have no real blueprint to establish itself in us. 22 JUNE 2011 • Tampa Bay Wellness

For lasting and life affirming change to occur, our present system of beliefs must experience the disarray of chaos in order to re-establish what is true in our lives. Change is a form of chaos that is clearly a part of our nature. To heal beliefs that have led us to think of our situation as intolerable, three elements must be present: 1. We must be willing to change. 2. We must believe that the change is worth making. 3. We must believe that the change is possible. Two of the factors required for a single piece of information to make a difference in our world are already in place: 1. History shows that our willingness to change is our nature. 2. The escalating threats to our current “status” (prosperity) make the prospect of change worthwhile. Therefore, the remaining element necessary before we make a change in our prosperity is: We need a reason to believe” that the change we

It is our ability to think differently and adapt to the conditions of our changing world that assure our evolutionary change to prosperity. As Einstein stated, “The significant problems we face today cannot be solved at the same level of thinking and beliefs we were at when we created them.” We now have an opportunity for change. Do you believe it? - Adapted from “The God Code”, Gregg Braden Rev. Marcella Zinner. Avoid Traditional Gum Surgery. Are You More Afraid of the Cure than the Disease?

D

r. Bromboz here. If you know anything about me, you know that I am passionate about providing the very best that modern technology has to offer to my patients, and because of that passion, I’m very excited to tell you about a new technology that is just short of a miracle - Laser Gum Therapy. This is an amazing breakthrough in periodontal (gum) treatment. If you have been told you need to have your gums cut in scalpel and suture gum surgery, then laser gum therapy may be a wonderful alternative for you. It is fast, convenient and requires absolutely no cutting, stitches or lengthy recovery period. It is estimated that as many as 75 percent of Americans over the age of 35 suffer from gum disease, which can destroy teeth, gums and the nerves that serve them. In fact, gum disease is more common than heart disease, stroke, cancer and

Alzheimer’s combined. And what is more frightening is that gum disease has been proven to travel to other areas of the body causing those very diseases. They have found the same bad bacteria and plaque in the arteries as is found in the gums. Left untreated, periodontal infection can increase your risk of developing many other diseases. Consider this. If you have periodontal disease, you increase your risk for: Heart disease by 150%, Stroke by 300%, Premature birth and low birth weight babies by 700%, Osteoporosis by 200% & Respiratory infections by 500% I am not here to frighten you. In fact I want to provide you with information that can actually be comforting and reassuring. Many people with gum disease are terrified of the treatment because

they have heard story after story about traditional treatment which involves scalpel surgery, stitches, bleeding, swelling, pain and numerous trips to the dentist or Periodontist’s office. Those days are over. Laser Gum Therapy has been shown to eliminate periodontal infection and actually assists in the regeneration of gum and bone. The Laser removes only the diseased tissue and leaves healthy tissue alone. Pain is minimal. Patients who have had Laser Gum Therapy most often only have to take Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) to feel comfortable. If you have periodontal disease, please explore your options. Not all laser gum treatments are the same. The procedure used by Dr. Bromboz, (LANAP – Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure,) is the only therapy that is FDA cleared for gum disease treatment and has a

patented protocol. Additionally, the dentist must go through advanced training to become certified. Only dentists who have been trained and licensed for LANAP therapy can claim to treat your gums with new attachment and bone formation. Avoid traditional gum surgery and get the gentler, kinder laser gum treatment and save your gums and teeth! ● Dr. Jonathan J. Bromboz practices Holistic Dentistry in Clearwater Florida. 2701 Park Dr. Suite 4 Clearwater Florida 33763 727-712-3837. Accredited by IAOMT in safe mercury filling replacement.

Why all supplements are not created equal. Which Supplements to Use for Weight Loss & Detox

T

he variety of weight loss shakes and bars available is overwhelming. As an Internal Medicine Physician and Board Certified Physician Nutrition Specialist, even my physician friends often ask me which supplements are best for themselves and their patients. I recommend two brands of meal replacements for weight loss. The first, XYMOGEN®’s i5, is my favorite because it is a powerful anti-inflammatory food that my patients use along with a detox diet. This all natural, fructose-free shake has ingredients that promote gastrointestinal healt, optimize the body’s ability to detoxify harmful substances and respond to inflammation. XYMOGEN®’s i5 patented ingredients, provide 21 grams of pea and rice proteins that are free of gluten and lactose, are generally considered hypoallergenic foods, and have a low level of flatulent sugars, negating the concern of intestinal gas. The blend also contains nonGMO chicory, a source of soluble fiber.

24 JUNE 2011 • Tampa Bay Wellness

Sometimes, my patients will read the label of other products and compare it to the ones we have in our office. While some of the ingredients may look the same as the XYMOGEN® i5, the quality of XYMOGEN® is the best that I have found. For example, the pea protein isolate in i5 is naturally obtained by simple water extraction, keeping all the nutritional qualities intact. It has a protein content of 90%, excellent digestibility (98%), and a wellbalanced amino-acid profile, including a particularly high content of lysine, arginine, and branched-chain amino acids. The combination of rice protein and pea protein achieves an Amino Acid Score of 100%. Other products that contain rice and pea proteins cannot claim to have the same nutritional content unless they are extracting the protein with water. In addition to the perfect amino acid score, Xymogen i5 stimulates the immune system with IgG and sulforaphane glucosinolate. It’s Arabinogalactan is a non-digestible, soluble dietary fiber derived from the Larch tree. For weight loss, we recommend using i5 two times per day and an alkaline, wheat free, milk free diet for one to two meals a day. People loose as much as 10 pounds the first week. Because they are eating an allergen free diet, people also feel more energy, less gas, bloating and achiness! As mentioned above, I do offer two brands of shakes. The second, Optifast, is not anti-inflammatory, but is the only weight loss shake that is safe to use for a full liquid diet. When we replace all our food with shakes, the nutritional Continued on next page.
