Break Free of the

Diet-Binge Cycle With her revolutionary approach to weight loss, local Hungry Heart counselor Andrea Crouch is helping her clients shed pounds and inches permanently—just by changing the way they think about food. Certified hypnotherapist, nutritional counselor, and behavioral modification specialist Andrea Crouch has the only weight loss program of its kind in Tampa Bay.

In 2006, prior to launching the Hungry Heart—a caring approach to out of control eating—Andrea obtained certification as a nutritional counselor and clinical hypnotherapist.

After spending several years in corporate America and dealing with her own issues with food, Andrea realized that her talents and training could be put to better use by helping others.

“I consult with over-eaters, yo-yo dieters, binge eaters and people who make poor food choices,” she says. “What I share with my clients is that we have to change our thinking before we can be permanently successful at losing weight.”

f you are one of the millions of Americans who try to lose weight each year—and fail—Hungry Heart owner Andrea Crouch wants you to know the solution could be locked in your brain.

“I tried every diet in the book, struggled with stress eating and yo-yo dieted for years. I didn’t have a program like Hungry Heart Andrea Crouch to help me. If I would have, I know I could have been achieved my goals a lot easier. After learning the Hungry Heart program it took my behaviors that were already in place to the next level and it is amazing the changes I have been able to maintain on a consistent basis.”

Most people try a diet, do well, and then gain the weight back, Andrea says. The Hungry Heart helps its clients handle their emotions without turning to food. It’s not a diet, she notes, instead, it’s about changing one’s mindset. Hypnotherapy, behavior modification, and nutritional counseling work together to help you lose the weight—and keep it off. “We do an initial one-on-one consultation with question and answers, then decide how to put a plan in place,” she says. “Everyone is different and determining what type of changes need to be made are unique to the individual.”

for some reason we are not doing it.” “Hypnosis helps us to get out of our own way so that we can efficiently achieve our goals.” “All hypnosis is self-hypnosis,” Andrea mentions. “You cannot be made to do anything that is not a part of your personal value system. The only things I can suggest during hypnotherapy are the things that you truly want to do.” She likens the feeling of being hypnotized to driving a route you’ve traveled hundreds of times. “After awhile, your subconscious takes over. You might even miss your exit on the freeway, but you know that you are driving and could stop if the car in front of you stops.” “Sessions are conducted on an individual basis, so that we can personalize them to your own core issues,” Andrea says. “The privacy of personal sessions allows clients to get comfortable and get their mind in the state it needs to be in.”

“What I share with my clients is that we have to change our thinking before we can be successful at losing weight.” “We focus on two things,” she describes. “First we find out how to help them discover what their motivations are for eating when they aren’t hungry. Then we replace eating behavior with something that serves them better.” “Since we are set for self preservation and success our minds will then naturally gravitate to the safer more productive choice.” Andrea shares that with her program, 85% of clients will stop overeating in the first two or three sessions. You may also e-mail her at andreacrouch@HungryHeart. org, or visit HungryHeart.org to learn more. Her office is located in St. Petersburg.

The hypnotherapy portion of the program, she points out, “is very effective in helping us to work with ourselves rather than against ourselves.” “Most of us know what we want to do but Tampa Bay WELLNESS • JANUARY 2010 3

Local News SARASOTA AUTHOR & EXPERT REVEALS SECRET TO 70 POUND WEIGHT LOSS

A

unique weight loss plan that may very well put a stop to obesity in America is revealed in the new book “The Anderson Method.” In this book, author William Anderson, LMHC, a licensed psychotherapist, discusses his revolutionary, expert-supported weight loss plan that will help end the obesity epidemic.

Anderson’s method is a structured application of what he calls “Therapeutic Psychogenics,” psychological techniques designed to change the core behaviors and attitudes that result in the physical result we live with, be it obesity or good health. Clients say they have learned how to reprogram or brainwash themselves.

Anderson’s practice became swamped when ABC 7’s Linda Carson lost 70 lbs. before viewers’ eyes four years ago, and then went public about how she did it with Anderson’s method. He has had a waiting list ever since, clients waiting up to a year to start, until he trained associates in his techniques. Now, he is preparing therapists in other parts of the country to duplicate his approach. Anderson wrote “The Anderson Method” believing it can not only help individuals solve their weight problems, but help the community as a whole.

“With my method, clients don’t have to wonder whether or not it will work. It always works. It’s based on irrefutable clinical science, and will not only solve the individual’s weight problem, but it can solve the epidemic of obesity in America. When we change ourselves, everything changes -- the culture changes.”

“’The Anderson Method’ is not a diet or exercise program,” Anderson says. “Its purpose is to create a permanent change in our automatic unconscious ways of acting and thinking. It becomes a habit to think and act in ways to make us lose weight and stay healthy.”

SHRINERS HOSPITALS FOR CHILDREN OFFERS WELLNESS PROGRAM

S

hriners Hospitals for Children - Tampa was successful incorporating an employee wellness program fitness challenge to enhance staff morale, teamwork and create friendly competition to improve fitness and nutrition. The Fitness Challenge was a fun 10 week program. Each participant decided their own approach to getting fit. Activities available during the challenge included nutritional guidance provided by Jane Becker, our Registered Dietitian and exercise consultation and boot camp routines provided by Paula Jager, CSCS, certified personal trainer from CrossFit Jaguar of Tampa. The collaborative efforts of Shriners Hospital and CrossFit Jaguar working with large groups of diverse people demonstrated the successes that can be accomplished with corporate wellness programs.

The Shriners Hospitals for Children met their goal to provide a motivational incentive for staff to engage in fitness-oriented activities and increase in health. “We noticed the impact the program had on the hospital’s spirit of teamwork. We had many success stories to include: staff that quit smoking, improved blood sugar control and some lost over 30 pounds. Participants were encouraged that this is not the end of their quest to improve fitness and nutrition, it is just the beginning,” reports Carol Ann Jenkins. Shriners Hospitals for Children is a one of a kind health care system of 22 hospitals dedicated to improving the lives of children. For more information, please visit www.shrinershospitals.org.

W

Sociologists Weigh In On Obesity Increasing the Length Of Hospital Stays Sociologists found a direct relationship between obesity and duration and frequency of hospital stays. Researchers found that, on average, obese persons stayed one and a half days longer than those with normal weight. Sociologists attribute the connection to disease--46 percent of obese adults have high blood pressure. Obesity is also linked to an increased risk of heart disease, diabetes, stroke and other illnesses. The researchers also note that the longer a person has been obese, the more likely their hospital stay is lengthened. “Obese people, on average, stay at least one to one and a half days longer than a normal-weight individual,” said Ken Ferraro, Ph.D., a sociologist at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind. The main reason for extra hospitalizations is disease. Forty-six percent of obese adults in the study had high blood pressure, and obese adults who have been overweight since childhood and carried extra weight into adulthood pay the highest price for being heavy.

SONOMA DIET PROMOTES MEDITERRANEAN FOODS

T

he Sonoma Diet, created by Connie Gunderson R.D., Ph.D., is a diet plan that promotes using smaller plates and portions while enjoying Mediterranean-style foods as the way to a slimmer waist and healthier lifestyle. The diet is not meant to be one of deprivation and avoidance. You can still enjoy a glass of wine and favorite foods, just in a moderate amount. The premise of the Sonoma Diet is based on the eating habits and foods of the Mediterranean. It “emphasizes eating a generous variety of foods that boost your vitality, protect your heart, and improve your overall health.” You eat wholesome, fresh food that is easy to find and

prepare, rather than nutrition bars, protein drinks, and frozen prepared meals. The recipes revolve around ten “power foods,” most of which are common in Mediterranean cooking: whole grains, almonds, bell peppers, tomatoes, broccoli, grapes, spinach, blueberries, strawberries and olive oil. The diet is managed in three phases, or “waves.” Wave 1 is the kickstart to the diet and lasts for 10 days. Wave 2 is the eating plan you’ll stay with until you reach your target weight. Once you reach your target weight, the third wave or maintenance phase begins. - www.healthnews.com

“The longer the person is obese, the longer their stay in the hospital,” Dr. Ferraro said. Tackling obesity at a young age is crucial to staying out of the hospital later on. “If you can tell other people that you’re on a diet, a lot of them actually might help you to stay on that diet, but if you’re silent to your friends, then obviously they can’t support you,” Dr. Ferraro advised. - www.sciencedaily.com

NIH Offers Tips on Choosing A Weight Loss Program

C

hoosing a weight-loss program may be a difficult task. You may not know what to look for in a weight-loss program or what questions to ask. You may want to talk with your doctor or other health care professional about controlling your weight before you decide on a weight-loss program. Doctors do not always address issues such as healthy eating, physical activity, and weight management during general office visits. It is important for you to start the discussion in order to get the information you need. Even if you feel uncomfortable talking about your weight with your doctor, remember that he or she is there to help you improve your health. Here are some tips: Tell your health care professional that you would like to talk about your weight. Share your concerns about any medical conditions you have or medicines you are taking.

• Write down your questions in advance. • Bring pen and paper to take notes. • Bring a friend or family member along for support if this will make you feel more comfortable. • Make sure you understand what your health care provider is saying. Do not be afraid to ask questions if there is something you do not understand. • Ask for other sources of information like brochures or websites. • If you want more support, ask for a referral to a registered dietitian, a support group, or a commercial weight-loss program. • Call your health care professional after your visit if you have more questions or need help. - Weight Control Information Network, National Institute of Health

In the study, presented at the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) Plastic Surgery 2009 conference, Oct. 23-27, in Seattle, plastic surgeons analyzed the carpal tunnel histories and pre- and post- weight loss health conditions of 43 massive weight loss patients.

Since obesity is associated with an increased prevalence of carpal tunnel syndrome, researchers conclude that weight loss should be advocated to obese patients suffering from this condition.

BREAKING THE PATTERN:

The OCD Brain That Heals Itself By Penijean Rutter, MA, CRC, BCIA-EEG

Advances in brain imaging have given researchers a deeper understanding of how a person with obsessive compulsive disorder can learn to change brain wave patterns and reduce symptoms using state of the art technology. Obsessive compulsive disorder can be characterized by “looping” repetitive thoughts or repetitive behaviors that one feels compelled to perform. This disorder can range from mildly annoying and inconvenient to extremely distressing and socially crippling. Traditional methods of treating both children and adults who are diagnosed with obsessive compulsive disorder include cognitive behavioral therapy, exposure and response prevention therapy, prescription medication, and surgical removal of affected parts of the brain. A promising new addition to this arsenal is

neurofeedback therapy, an up and coming treatment method that is gaining popularity among sufferers who have had little success with talk therapy or medications, and do not want to undergo brain surgery. The brain wave patterns of an individual with documented obsessive or compulsive symptoms differ in a recognizable way from an individual without obsessive or compulsive symptoms. Areas in the brain associated with vigilance, emotional arousal and cognitive processing are noticeably more active when obsessive compulsive disorder symptoms are present. A brain mapping procedure called QEEG (quantitative electroencephalogram) records the electrical activity in the brain and generates images that tell a story about how the brain is using its resources. When important parts of the brain are too active,

they use up valuable resources leaving the rest of the brain and body vulnerable to stress. Obsessive thoughts or compulsive behaviors can be the result of an organism trying to alleviate stress. Using the QEEG brain map, qualified clinicians can use neurofeedback to help the brain retrain itself naturally to process information in a less stressful way. This allows the brain to change the way it uses resources, diverting energy from hyperactive “hot spots” and rerouting it to areas that focus on other tasks. This not only allows the brain to operate more efficiently, but can improve focus and memory, as well as alleviate anxiety and decrease depression. Recent studies in clinics across America are yielding promising results using neurofeedback with people who experience a variety of obsessive compulsive symptoms. By isolating particular channels of information that the brain is using to make executive decisions, neurofeedback training can target specific regions of brain function and alter the behavior of the underlying neurophysiologoy. This allows the brain to actually improve at the source of the activity, instead of simply masking symptoms, or removing actual brain tissue. Neurofeedback is an exciting therapy that is still growing in leaps and bounds and developing new ways to work with obsessive compulsive brain patterns every day. For sufferers who are tired of pills and pithy phrases, and want an effective, natural solution to the stress caused by a brain that has its own agenda, neurofeedback could be the answer they have been looking for since first being diagnosed with obsessive compulsive disorder.

WINNING

BIG in the New Year: Weight Loss with Health & Wellness Expert Jillian Michaels

16 JANUARY 2010 • Tampa Bay WELLNESS

www.tampabaywellness.com

While there are many wellness experts on both the national and local levels, it is rare for someone to lose weight, dedicate their professional career to helping others do the same, and also gain prominence on a U.S. version of a weight-loss reality series. This, however, is exactly what happened to Jillian Michaels. Jillian, a Los Angeles Native, weighed 175 pounds at age twelve. Her mother enrolled her in a martial arts class, which kick-started her weight loss and life-long fitness journey. Today she is healthy and in the best shape of her life.

WINNING BIG WITH JILLIAN MICHAELS Jillian became famous for her involvement with the NBC television show The Biggest Loser. She served as the Red Team trainer until 2006 and returned to the show in 2008 as the Black Team trainer. Jillian has also worked as a trainer on the Australian version of the show. Each week she motivates nearly 10 million TV viewers and approximately 3 million subscribers to her Web site, www.JillianMichaels.com, through daily e-mail newsletters.

JILLIAN ON HER NEW SHOW: ‘LOSING IT WITH JILLIAN’ Everyone who has an opportunity to work with Jillian wins big; what they win, however, is the opportunity to lose their bigger body and step into their most fit and healthy life. NBC has partnered with Jillian and Giancarlo Chersich, CEO of her company, Empowered Media, along with “The Biggest Loser” producers Mark Koops and Howard T. Owens of Reveille and former “Oprah” executive producer Ellen Rakieten, to bring viewers the new life-changing alternative series “Losing It with Jillian.” In the series, premiering in the spring of 2010, Michaels invades a different family every week to give them her characteristic brand of tough love. She will get to the bottom of the issues each family member faces -- ones that affect their health and happiness -- and will arm them with the tools necessary to make life-altering changes. “When your health is out of balance everything else suffers – finances, relationships, work and family dynamics. bad habits in every corner of their lives that are preventing them from health and happiness. Get ready America because I’m heading out and you never know, I might just end up on your doorstep so watch out!” Michaels adds.

JILLIAN ON YOUR METABOLISM In addition to her new reality show, Jillian continues to share her New York Times best seller Master Your Metabolism with fans. If you’ve tried every fad diet out there, such as avoiding carbs, eating grapefruit for a week, or ingesting only liquids for days on end, you might be surprised to learn that Jillian has, too! “For a full decade, I treated my body like I was a

lab rat,” Jillian explains. Jillian wrote her book to share everything she’s learned in her seventeen years of studying with the world’s top doctors in sports medicine, nutrition, endocrinology, and antiaging and to reveal how both men and women can remove, restore, and rebalance their hormones to dramatically improve not only their weight but also their quality of life. “I’ve been at this for almost two decades, but what I’ve learned in the past few years completely changed my body and my life,” Jillian says. My book is the distillation of my entire journey in health, my total approach to optimal weight and optimal health.” Master Your Metabolism is not an exercise book, nor do its weight-loss benefits come from counting calories. “If your biochemistry is out of whack, you’re set up to fail when it comes to weight control,” says Tampa Bay WELLNESS • JANUARY 2010 17

Jillian. “Your weight has everything to do with your hormones; your body can’t work the way it’s supposed to if they’re unbalanced,” Jillian adds. “By changing your habits in the grocery store and at the kitchen table, you can get your hormones in check,” Jillian says. The three easy steps to doing so are:

STEP 1: REMOVE Start detoxifying by removing antinutrients that disrupt the body’s natural hormonal balance, causing it to speed the excessive release of weightgain hormones (insulin, estrogen, cortisol) and to block the release of weight-loss hormones (thyroid, leptin, adiponectin, HGH).

STEP 2: RESTORE Suboptimal nutrition causes catabolic damage (loss of muscle tissue, slowing of cellular repair and reproduction, and slowing of the metabolism), so it’s extremely important that we restore optimum nutrition to our diets. In Step 2, Jillian explains the ten super foods that facilitate metabolic repair and re-create natural hormonal equilibrium.

STEP 3: REBALANCE Rebalance the energy going into and out of your body by addressing the frequency, quantity, combinations, and timing of meals and snacks to make your metabolism work like a fat-burning machine.

NEW YEAR’S

RESOLUTIONS: IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT THE FOOD.

A

nother New Year’s Day, another resolution to lose weight. Another Feb. 1, another diet failure. Studies show that eight out of every 10 people give up on their New Year’s resolutions, most within the first month. And when it comes to dieting, it’s no

wonder resolve weakens. That’s because most dieters focus on their tummies, not on their heads. “Emotions, not appetite, rule when it comes to out of control eating,” explains Andrea Crouch of the Hungry Heart, a St. Petersburg-area service that uses personal coaching, nutritional counseling and hypnotherapy for weight loss. “Especially for women, overeating masks feelings of anxiety, stress, loneliness or some other emotional need that is not being met. We turn to food for comfort.” How to stick to that resolution to eat healthier and drop some pounds?

Stop dieting. “I know it sounds counter-intuitive,” Andrea says. “But the first step is to get in touch with why we overeat and then free ourselves from the need to use food to feed our emotions instead of simply to nourish our bodies.”

Face those feelings and accept them. You have every right to feel exactly as you do. When we feel our feelings, process them and redirect our energy to think differently about the situation, the need to “eat over” our emotions disappears. Focus on other choices of things to do to comfort yourself practice deep breathing, take a hot bath while listening to soft music, watch a screwball comedy. Listen to the negative voice inside your head that tells you, “You’re fat. You’re weak. You’re worthless.” And then shut it up! Would you ever speak to a friend that way? You cannot stop the cycle of overeating, dieting, failing and overeating again by being judgmental or berating yourself. If you do choose to eat, that’s OK. But do so thoughtfully. Choose only first-rate food. Sit down at the table with no distractions. Savor the first two bites. Once you get in touch with your emotions, you can begin to work smart food choices into your routine, Andrea says. You can learn to eat when you’re hungry, stop when you’re full and trust yourself to eat healthfully without dieting. ANDREA CROUCH is a

Here are a few first steps that Andrea suggests for getting in touch with the “whys” of overeating: Keep a food diary; not just what you eat but what you’re feeling. Ask yourself, “If I wasn’t about to eat this, what would I be feeling?” 20 JANUARY 2010 • Tampa Bay WELLNESS

Ashley Have you ever had that moment in life where you just know that you are about to make a change? Some refer to it as the moment that they just “clicked”. My “ahh haa!” moment came one day almost 5 years ago when I made the split second decision to go to the store. I walked in and saw one of those scales that just begs you to spend your change. I opted for my weight and held off on the horoscope that day.

AFTER

AFTER

Sometimes I wonder if my horoscope would have revealed to me the very profound changes that were about to take place in my life. I inserted my quarter and what happened next truly changed my life. 208. Yes. Those three digits left me in SHOCK! Anger, hurt, surprise, dejected... these are all of the emotions that flooded me that day. I left. My urge to shop was crushed and I walked what felt like the longest 20 feet of my life to my car. With tears running down my cheeks I made the vow to change my life and lose weight. I made this decision all before putting the keys in the ignition. It was the sudden realization that I had let myself go. I had no clue that I was this large. Yes, I had brothers that referred to me by names other than my own... I just thought they were doing what brothers do and picking on me. I never realized that there were some hurtful truths behind those names.

BEFORE

22 JANUARY 2010 • Tampa Bay WELLNESS

I began to do all that I knew how to do. I started to run more miles than my feet cared to. I started to cut out all of my foods and limit myself to calories which were dangerously low... I started to lose weight and the number on the scale began to plummet. As I continued on my journey of trying to get healthy, I failed to realize that what I was doing, while my intentions were good, was just as unhealthy to my temple

as being overweight. I did not have the knowledge to know how to achieve my goals in a way which was optimal to my body. I did however, start to increase in self confidence. The shy and self conscious girl who walked into the store that day began to peel back layers of hurt and anger from lifes disappointments. I began to familiarize myself with the poisons in my life and one by one began to eliminate them. The one biggest poison in my life came from a relationship I was engaged in and had been for sometime. I realized that this person was not condusive to helping me become the very best person I could become and as a result I ended the relationship without as much as a thought. I began to find my inner “fire”. I look back at the “old” Ashley now as if she is a different person and I would best describe her as a survivor. We all have our hidden hurts, stresses or things in life which just beg for us to shed the light on them rather than whats important. My first real entrance into the world of health and fitness came the very special day that I met my now husband, Alex. Alex has always been into health and wellness. He has spent countless hours researching nutrition, supplewww.tampabaywellness.com

ments and cultivating his passion. Alex found me at a time in my life when I was tired. I had been on this journey of trying to get healthy for so long and still was not happy with what I saw. At this point I was thin, no doubt, and had skin that just hung off of my tired bones. I always say he was my “Angel”. Alex began to infuse his knowledge into me. He put me on a nutritional plan which had me eating more food than I had eaten in a while! I proceeded forward with trust that he knew what he was doing. I remember vividly being terrified that I would get heavy again. I associated food as being the culprit and not the nourishment to feed and shape my hungry body. As I sit here writing this to you, my lips are pursed and my eyes watery as I am reliving these moments, these emotions. Alex saw me for the Ashley I was and began to help me build confidence in myself and trust in myself. Ultimately, he gave me belief. He introduced me to weight training and how it could help me to achieve what I so badly wanted. I will never forget the first squat bar he purchased me and ever so patiently watched as I tried and tried again to get the movement down. That bar is tucked away in our facility now... for others to use. I became addicted. I began to live in the gym and I remember finding my happiest moments come when I grabbed those weights. My stresses disappeared and my confidence began to soar.

EATING DISORDER ORGANIZATIONS JOIN FORCES TO URGE FOCUS ON HEALTH & LIFESTYLE RATHER THAN WEIGHT

I

n an unprecedented show of concern, The Academy for Eating Disorders (AED), Binge Eating Disorder Association (BEDA), Eating Disorder Coalition (EDC), International Association for Eating Disorder Professionals (iadep), and National Eating Disorder Association (NEDA) have joined forces and are urging focus on health and lifestyle rather than weight as a measurement of well-being. In late November, media stories reported that an American university implemented a new strategy for combating rising weights by requiring students to be weighed during their freshman year. Those with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or over are required either to lose weight or pass an extra course focused on physical fitness. In response to this, and other similar strategies within the global “war against obesity”, national and international eating disorder organizations have joined forces to urge school administrators, employers, and health policy makers to focus more on health and lifestyle for all populations rather than on weight alone. Eating disorder groups assert that this well-intended, but under-informed and unproven strategy of focusing on BMI fuels weight-prejudice and neglects groups which may be in equal need of improving their health and lifestyle. There is concern that, in some cases, the programs contribute to negative self-esteem, body dissatisfaction and eating disordered behaviors among young people. Neither the scale nor BMI calculation provide the full picture most relevant to health status, such as lifestyle and activity patterns, and physical and mental health -NewsWise measures.

Renewal

1.

You don’t need to exercise to lose and control your weight.

What? This goes against everything all the “experts” say! Well, it’s true. Exercise may be vitally important for a lot of things, but it’s not required to lose and control your weight, and if you don’t get your eating under control, focusing on exercise may cause a weight gain! (An hour on the treadmill will be cancelled by one brownie! Eat two because you “worked out,” and you gain weight, not lose it!) When I learned how insignificant exercise was, and that controlling my intake was the solution, whether or not I exercised, I had hope for the first time in my life. I didn’t have to exercise in ways I hated! I have clients who are disabled and cannot exercise, yet they do fine at controlling their weight.

2.

It doesn’t matter whether you eat health food or junk food, diet food or fast food.

WHAT YOU MUST KNOW TO LOSE WEIGHT FOR GOOD FIVE VITALLY IMPORTANT & INCREDIBLY SURPRISING THINGS By William Anderson, MA, LMHC

I

f you’ve been failing at diets and exercise schemes forever and have just about given up, don’t lose hope. 2010 can be the year you finally succeed. Believe me, no matter how many times you’ve tried and failed, no matter how hopeless it has looked, your success is entirely possible, as long as you’re still breathing and have an open mind. I know this because I lost 140 pounds twenty-five years ago, after twenty-five years of being an over-

weight diet failure who gave up more times than you can count. But one year, I “got it,” lost 140 pounds, ended my obesity problem, and I’ve maintained my ideal weight since—over twenty years. This could be the year you “get it.” Here are five surprising and vitally important facts you need to absorb before you can begin on your path to recovery from obesity and dieting failure.

26 JANUARY 2010 • Tampa Bay WELLNESS

Your weight is a result of your “caloric balance sheet.” Eat more calories than you use (1800 per day for the “average” woman, 54,000 per month) and you’ll gain weight. Eat fewer calories than you use, and you’ll burn up stored fat and lose weight. It doesn’t matter where the calories come from, health food, “junk” food, carbs, fat, protein---- It doesn’t matter (for weight control purposes). A calorie is a calorie is a calorie. Is it better to have better nutrition? You bet. But if you eat too many calories of “health food” you’ll get fat, while someone who eats fewer calories of the “wrong things” will lose weight.

3.

Diets are not the solution. Learning how to eat, strategically undereat what you like, is the solution. Learning how to diet (eat in some abnormal way to lose weight) does no good, because at the end of the diet, we go back to “normal” or worse, and keep gaining. We got fat because we developed habits of eating too many calories, and if we go on a “diet” with the intention of going back to “normal”, we are planning on getting fat again. Success will come from learn-

ing to eat food we like in ways where we won’t get fat. Believe me, there is a way. We will need to change, and it must be a permanent change with no return to the old ways, but it needn’t be without pleasure. In fact, we enjoy eating even more!

4.

It doesn’t matter what time of the day you eat, or even what day of the week.

Read again what I said in item #2. It really doesn’t matter when you eat, even if you eat mostly at night, or skip meals during the week and splurge on Saturday night. Real science backs me up on this. If you can create a lifestyle you like, one you can live with where your “balance sheet” is correct, you’ll succeed, even if it’s not what some “experts” think is the “right” way to eat.

5.

Success is not just a matter of “will power” or “just making up your mind”.

It’s not that some people have “it” and some don’t. Success in changing habitual behavior, even tough habitual behavior like an addiction, is not just a matter of “will power.” There is a body of knowledge and technique in my field of behavioral medicine that you can learn, knowledge and technique that will empower you to make changes in your life that were not possible before. It will be work. But if being overweight/obese has been a curse on your life, and you’d like to get rid of it, don’t give up. Keep hoping and praying. Learn what you have to do. Be prepared to learn more from legitimate sources, and work at it. Keep going.

was standing in line at the grocery store the other day and overheard this cell phone conversation, “Well, I wonder if I should invite Aunt Sally to dinner. Most of the family doesn’t like her being around. But I feel so bad about her being alone. I hate guilt. What do you think I should do?” Guilt is a complex and compelling emotion, causing us to engage in behaviors that go against the very grain of our best intentions. Just what is this thing we call guilt?

What we sometimes experience as guilt can actually be a mechanism of group cohesion. In order to maintain any group (or a society) there has to be a sense of law and order. The members need to know what behaviors will keep them in the group, and what behavior will get them throw out of the group. Members eventually learn what behaviors lead to abandonment by the group and (by way of their own fear) avoid engaging in those behaviors. Theoretically then, fear of abandonment by the group for “doing the wrong thing” evolves into what we call guilt. By this design, guilt is an emotional signal to keep you from getting thrown to the woods to survive on your own. Now there are times when we engage in behavior we know will go against the grain of the larger group. When engaging in this potentially risky behavior 28 JANUARY 2010 • Tampa Bay WELLNESS

we have to carefully consider the outcomes for ourselves, and those involved. Consider Rosa Parks and her encounter with the bus system during the civil rights movement. What if she had followed the group cohesion part of her brain and stayed in her seat at the back of the bus. “Just do what you’re supposed to do” thinking would have set back civil rights legislation in this country for untold numbers of years. She had to ask herself a question, “Is this right; am I supposed to sit in the back of the bus because of my skin color?” This is an important question to ask when dealing with the issue of guilt, “Is my behavior wrong?” That was easy. A good follow up question would be, “What do I need to do in this situation in order to get a sense of being proud of myself?” Hmm, that was easy too. In the case of Rosa Parks, I’m sure that somewhere in her thinking we would find her saying, “It’s wrong to sit in the back because of my skin color when there are plenty of seats in the front. I know what I need to do to feel proud.” As for the person on the cell phone, this is how I hope they solved the problem. “Well, the main problem is that most of the family doesn’t like having Aunt Sally at meals because she burps at the table. I can understand that because I don’t like it either. On the other hand, I know that she will feel

left out and most likely spend this holiday all alone. That makes me feel sad for her. My heart says to invite her, but my family won’t like it. So I have to ask myself, if I invite her, is that wrong? What’s right for me? What will help me to feel proud? Okay, I get it, I’m inviting her, that’s the right thing to do for me, my family will have to get over it, I won’t get thrown to the woods, and I’ll feel proud that I stuck up for what I thought was good.” So why does Aunt Sally continue to burp at the table when she knows it bothers people? Well, that’s a topic for another day.

eing too optimistic could harm weight loss efforts. Research published in BioMed Central’s open access journal, BioPsychoSocial Medicine, reveals the psychological characteristics that may contribute to weight loss. Hitomi Saito from Doshisha University, Japan, worked with a team of researchers to psychologically profile 101 obese patients undergoing combined counseling, nutrition and exercise therapy at the Kansai Medical University Hospital Obesity Clinic over a period of 6 months. Patients’ psychosocial characteristics before and after attending the clinic were assessed using psychological questionnaires designed to identify patients’ personality types. Patients who were able to improve their self-awareness through counseling were more likely to lose weight than those who were not. Optimism and selforientation characteristics improved for most patients after the 6-month program, although this was not related to weight loss. In fact,

www.tampabaywellness.com

patients who started the program with high levels of self-orientation and optimistic characteristics were less likely to lose weight. This result supports previous findings that some negative emotion has a positive effect on behavior modification because patients care more about their disease. However, the overall improvement in optimistic ego state is not necessarily detrimental, as this increased optimism should result in patients maintaining the healthy lifestyle achieved at the clinic. “It is important to enhance patients’ self-effectiveness and self-control in order to reduce psychological stress and to maintain the weight loss,” state the authors. However, they are careful to stress that: “The weight loss should be attributed not simply to the intervention of the clinical psychologists but to the total effect of the intervention of a holistic medical care team.” - Science Daily

Adult Stem Cell Therapy Erin R. Sprankle

T

o say Leonard Narracci lived an active lifestyle barely illustrates how this fireball of a man enjoyed life. By day, he was a high school English teacher. During the weekends and summers, a farmer. When it came time to close the schoolbooks and retire to Venice, Florida he was not satisfied with simply moving into a condo or pre-built home, but began making plans to build his retirement home. But, something changed. An overwhelming feeling of being run-down melted the energy from his once active body. Daily tasks felt daunting. After his extreme fatigue smothered him, Leonard knew he needed help. His doctors told him that he had a heart disease called cardiomyopathy. To his dismay, he learned that his condition was incurable. He was sentenced to a life of routine medications, decreased productivity, and eventual heart failure. For four years Leonard struggled through apathy and battled depression due to his condition. He described these years as the worst of his life. Determined to discover a better quality of life, Leonard began to research any possibilities of further treatment. What he found was a novel treatment using his own stem cells. Mr. Narracci discovered Regenocyte Therapeutic, an organization leading the world in regenerative cell therapy. Dr. Zannos Grekos, Director of Cardiac and Vascular Diseases in Bonita Springs, Florida, was conducting a seminar discussing the use of adult stem cells and their regenerative nature. Mr. Narracci attended the seminar and his interest was piqued. Listening to former patients speak on their success with adult stem cell therapy only made Mr. Narracci more interested in learning about this natural way to regenerate the human body. Before arriving home from the library, he decided that adult stem cell therapy was for him. Before therapy, Leonard’s heart was severely dysfunctional. His Ejection Fraction (EF) rate, the percentage of the volume of blood that is pumped (ejected) with each beat of the heart, was 20%. Prior to his treatment he expressed a personal goal of hoping to obtain www.tampabaywellness.com

an EF rate of 40% within one year of undergoing adult stem cell therapy. At his one-year check-up in October 2009, Mr. Narracci was stunned to find his EF rate registering 52%. The treatment process for Mr. Narracci began with a simple blood draw. After the blood was drawn it was then couriered to a state-of-the-art laboratory in Israel. The stem cells were then separated, engineered into 40-80 million stem cells, and then educated to reinforce Leonard’s heart. Next, the stem cells were hand couriered to the Dominican Republic. Approximately one week after his blood was drawn, Leonard made his way to the Dominican Republic to receive his adult stem cells. The delivery of the stem cells is what makes Regenocyte’s therapy so unique. A team of physicians injects the stem cells into the heart through a specialized catheter that allows precise delivery of the stem cells to the exact location they are needed. As the stem cells are injected they begin to repair the damaged area. Due to the ease of the catheter procedure, patients are released from the hospital the next day. Mr. Narracci began discovering improvements after the first week. He said, “I was expecting improvements, but not so quickly. After two weeks my Ejection Fraction rate had gone up 8 points – I was amazed!” With each check-up Mr. Narracci continued to improve and at his one-year mark he had climbed from 20% to 52%. Mr. Leonard Narracci, the life-long educator had become the student – a student of his own heart. For Mr. Narracci, the answer to his problem was not found in a textbook, but rather in his own stem cells. He now says, with much pleasure, “I can do what I want to do, when I want to do it!” Regenocyte Therapeutic is leading the world in adult stem cell therapy. For further information on Dr. Grekos and how his groundbreaking studies are affecting the world of medicine visit www.regenocyte.com

Dr. Zannos Grekos and Regenocyte Therapeutic can be found at www. regenocyte.com. Regenocyte Therapeutic is leading the world in adult stem cell therapy. Dr Grekos periodically conducts national and local seminars to educate the public about adult stem cell therapy. The next seminar will be held January 20, 2010 at 10am at the Collier County Regional Library located at 2385 Orange Blossom Drive in Naples, Florida. To register for this public seminar call 1-866-216-5770 or visit www.regenocyte.com. Tampa Bay WELLNESS • JANUARY 2010 31

ur world is shifting. Some of us have felt the tremors deep within our core. I, for one, have been pushed out of my comfort zone. I felt that my choices were to either find a rudder to steer the course or, abandon ship thrashing and struggling to stay afloat. Fortunately, the struggle to survive is innate in all of us. So I found the rudder. What is that “special something” that makes someone transform a “negative situation” into a positive experience? The old John Lennon quote, “Life happens to us while we’re making plans” reverberates loud and clear throughout our lifetime. If we can weather the storm when we find ourselves swimming through a sudden rip tide, then we are certainly ahead of the game. The first 40 years of my life, I didn’t have a clue about “spiritual survival skills.” I dealt with problems any way I could and, fingers crossed, hoped for the best. I made choices which led me towards a certain direction and I had to deal with the consequences. My life was filled with fear. I deferred power to my husband and others. I didn’t know I had a voice. Finally, after 18 years of marriage and a divorce that lasted 4 years in court, I was determined to find easier ways to deal with life. I was looking for opportunities to spread my wings. What better way to start than with “fire walking.” Tony Robbins provided a somewhat safe, supercharged experience of walking on 2000 degrees of hot coals, anchoring me with a powerful metaphor for life. Imagine what else you could do after such an experience. After 18 firewalks (corresponding with 18 years of marriage), I decided to fulfill a deep desire to drive a race car. Tony’s metaphor, “If you can’t, you Must, if you Must, you Will!!” became my own. And I did “Take Action”. And as a result I became a professional stunt car driver for 8 years filming TV shows and commercials all over the country. Spinning and sliding cars, doing 180’s and 360’s on cue, elevated my confidence. But my inner emotional Spirit quietly awaited more lessons to come. While I could perform feats of courage, I was still experiencing in-

ternal fears. A long-standing water phobia began to surface as the majority of my self improvement trainings took place in Hawaii. Here I was learning how to help people overcome past traumas when I knew I had to conquer my own. In addition to Hypnosis, Past Life Regression, Neuro Linguistics and Psychic channeling, I was introduced to an ancient Hawaiian healing process called Huna (secret).

THE CORE OF THIS WORK IS “FORGIVENESS.” Ho’oponopono is the official Hawaiian name which means to make amends inside ourselves twice. You forgive yourself for holding on to the perceptions of the past that destroy your body. For example, anger releases a chemical that bruises the heart muscle drawing a parallel to the medical fact that heart attacks are the leading cause of death in this country. Fear and sadness are known to reduce the immune systems ability to heal itself. Often these symptoms are simply called “depression” and pills are prescribed. Being sensitive to drugs, I always looked for an alternative way to heal myself. As I started to practice the forgiveness process, learning the Hawaiian chants and other Huna secrets over the next 3 years, I began to feel lighter and better about myself. I also had to clean and forgive myself every day for the feelings of guilt, sadness, fear and anger that accompany the losses I had experienced. Thank God for Ho’oponopono, the forgiveness process. Having gone to the depths of suffering we can rise like the Phoenix seeing the world through different eyes. I am grateful everyday for the forgiveness process and the ability to”let go”, my main “spiritual survival tools” that have brought me full circle to the present time. Letting go of the interpretations of the past is the key that will open the door to peace of mind despite what goes on in the world. BELINDA FARRELL is a Certified Master Hypnotherapist, Neuro-Linguistics Practitioner, and certified Huna Practitioner of ancient Hawaiian healing. She holds a B.A. degree in English and Spanish from the University of California at Berkeley and a Life Time Elementary Teaching Credential. Belinda teaches 4 Levels of Huna as well as conducts Personal Breakthrough Sessions on the phone or in person in Santa Cruz, CA. Her 3 internationally acclaimed CD’s incorporate the Forgiveness process together with the ancient Hawaiian chants to call your Spirit back. www.hunahealing.com
