“WARNING: Our Program Will Allow You To Throw Away Your Harmful Diet Pills And Finally Provide Healthy, LASTING Weight Loss For Everyone Who Is Trying To Lose Unwanted Pounds” No more yo-yo dieting or B12 shots that provide temporary solutions to your weight loss problems. We turn your problems into realistic goals through natural health and lasting weight loss solutions. Doctors across the country fail miserably with their weight loss patients everyday. Has your doctor told you to: • Get B12 shots • Take harmful appetite suppressants • Stop eating carbohydrates • Workout twice a day for 30 minutes • Drink shakes instead of eating meals • Purchase expensive prepared meals If you are frustrated with your body, your eating habits, or your lack of motivation and you want to find something that allows you to live your life and feel great about your body this article is going to change your weight loss goals forever. My name is Dr. Carl Conforti and I have spent the last 12 years trying to find the answer for all of my patients that come to me frustrated that they cannot lose weight. I could never find the solution that could help my patients, male and female, young and old achieve the goal of weighing less while maintaining their health. When they would come to me with ailments caused by weight issues, I always felt unprepared and wanted to make sure that each one of my patients did what was right for them. I have a long history in the health and fitness field, but weight loss is a very specific science that varies from person to person. I felt like it was my responsibility as their doctor to find the best method to make sure that each patient achieved their weight loss goals. I got so frustrated seeing my patients going to doctors that claimed they knew the key to weight loss. All the shots, shakes, and pills my patients were taking made me sick to my stomach. I have seen example after example that most doctors only know pills and shots…not weight loss. I really started to think that I was the only doctor that really wanted my patients to change their bodies and change their lives PERMENANTLY. I gathered my resources and made it my mission to find the healthy, successful way for my patients to not only be at their ideal weight...but to stay there. How I Became A Weight Loss Pro… With Results That Even Shocked Me! As a doctor who prides himself on continuing education and staying on top of health and wellness demands, I was sitting in a seminar with my team of doctors that work throughout the Tampa Bay area a while back listening to a renowned doctor speak on the www.tampabaywellness.com

topic of ultimate healthy weight loss. This doctor had the most insightful knowledge about the SCIENCE behind weight loss and the ability of the human body…no matter how far away from health…to make itself healthy with the help of his amazing program. We found ourselves in awe, but what really got us excited was the reaction of all of my colleagues in the audience. His words and science behind his studies left a whole room full of doctors speechless! Luckily, we saw him in the lobby an d spoke to him about all the patients we had that would be able to change their lives with his program. We decided to have dinner together and talk more in depth about his remarkable success.

After

As we proceeded with dinner he asked all of us to explain a little about our patients and why we felt as though we were not able to provide the help they needed. He laughed at all of our “excuses” and then told us something we will never forget. He said “Doctors, you know the science, you are THEE doctors that can change all of these patients lives. Let me teach you my program, and I guarantee that you will see the success and the wellness of your patients spread throughout your practice.” It came so naturally, we were able to use our patients will and determination and a long list of science to really change the lives of people throughout the Tampa Bay area. But here is the key: This program is not for the person that wants a magic pill to make their lives happier and their weight perfect. This program is only for people who want to gain control of their diet and choose their own results with their weight loss and really, truly feel good about themselves for accomplishing those weight loss goals. Billie Odor And Inner Healings and Associates

BeginS Monthly Meetings February Topic: “The Ever Elusive Silver Bullet” February 13, 2012 How does disease start? You breathe, you create Fee Radicals. You eat, while digesting, you create Free Radicals. The medications you take create Free Radicals. You exercise, more Free Radicals. You go on a detoxification program, more Free Radicals. You have surgery to remove the diseased cells that the Free Radicals created, more Free Radicals. Are you suffering with depression? Yes, the Free Radicals are in the brain and creating other problems, such as; ADHD, ADD, OCD, Migraines, Stroke, Parkinson, Alzheimer, Cancer, COPD, Diabetes, Lupus, Dermatitis, etc. You are just like the old car or the old washing machine sitting out in the back yard exposed to oxygen day after day. Oxygen speeds up the rusting. The rusting in the human body is called Free Radical Damage. This process is commonly known as “the aging process”. All mammals breathe oxygen. Free Radicals lead to Oxidative Stress Levels in every cell of the body. The medical field has spent a billion dollars proving High Oxidative Stress Levels cause over 200 known diseases. Until recently, we were at the mercy of all diseases. Is there anything you can do about this? There is now. Attend Inner Healings class; learn how you can turn this situation around. Billie did. Now it is time to share this with you. This is so significant you must hear it for yourself. This class is FREE and open to the public. Class starts promptly at 7pm and finished by 9pm. Shen Yun—An Art Form 5,000 Years in the Making Every legend has its history. Every story has its truths. And the best are rarely forgotten.

On March 3-4, the company will be back to Tampa Bay area for 3 brand-new shows at the Straz Center.

For the past 5,000 years, China amassed a diverse legacy of heroes, myths, and values that still resonate in the present. Today, Shen Yun Performing Arts is reviving the essence of traditional Chinese culture in full color on stages around the world. The Elegance of Shen Yun Artists Shen Yun Performing Arts’ style is based on classical Chinese dance with a complete, traditional system of training. Classical Chinese dance has grown out of the 5,000-year-old Chinese culture, with artistic creation, refinement, arrangement, and practice by generations of dancers. This tradition has led to Chinese dance becoming a unique art form with its own essence and spirit. Chinese folk and ethnic dances passed on the traditional Chinese spirit through the ages. The harmony, grace, and upright principles of Shen Yun reflect the essence of these traditions, and because of the universal beauty and messages of their performances, people of all ethnic backgrounds can easily connect with them and enjoy them. The rigorous and intricate training required for classical Chinese dancers leads to superb skill in movement, bearing, and difficult tumbling techniques. Additionally, Shen Yun emphasizes character development and personal cultivation because classical Chinese dance is very expressive. The deep inner meaning gives the dancers much to express and interpret, allowing them to vividly depict personalities, emotions, and even important events in society through a broad range of techniques. 12 FEBRUARY 2012 • Tampa Bay Wellness

An introduction to classical Chinese dance Classical Chinese dance is one of the most complex, expressive, and demanding art forms in the world. For thousands of years in China, it has been passed down through performances in the imperial court and folk dance. Since ancient times, one conviction has remained the same—the Chinese people have believed that their culture is a gift from the divine. Classical Chinese dance is part of that heritage. “Even in ancient times we find dance,” said Ms. Yi Cao, a former judge with New Tang Dynasty Television’s Chinese International Classical Dance Competition, in a comprehensive video about classical Chinese dance on the Shen Yun Performing Arts website: www.shenyunperformingarts.org. “When people were happy, the movements of the hands and feet became dance.” Classical Chinese dance is a pure, unique, and complex art form, 5,000 years in the making. Each of China’s many dynasties brought with them their own distinct styles of dance. As the dynasties changed, the gems of each era became incorporated into the main body of classical Chinese dance. “It’s a kind of cultural foundation that has been passed down, the Chinese people’s own treasure passed down over the generations all the way to today,” said Ms. H. Sue Guo, vice president of Fei Tian College, the first school in the United States that provides systematic college-level training in classical Chinese dance, in the aforementioned video on classical Chinese dance. For 5,000 years, many traditions in China were intricately www.tampabaywellness.com

connected, such as martial arts, folk dance, and acrobatics. With the passing of time, they became part of a single art form. Many strains of the Chinese culture became incorporated into classical Chinese dance. As a result, alongside ballet, classical Chinese dance stands as one of the world’s complete schools of dance with its own theories, techniques, and forms of expression. The core of classical Chinese dance is made up of three main components: technical skill, form, and bearing. Technical Skill The technical part of classical Chinese dance features an array of leaps, jumps, twists, splits, spins, and tumbling techniques. While many of these skills are seen in other art forms like gymnastics and acrobatics, they actually originate from classical Chinese dance. “In traditional Chinese culture, the martial and the civil were interconnected. In martial arts, there are striking and flipping techniques that came from ancient battlefields,” said Mr. Gu Yun, a principal dancer and choreographer for Shen Yun

www.tampabaywellness.com

Performing Arts, in the aforementioned video. “They were used for fending off blows and such. All these are the most traditional ways of using strength.” After these martial arts techniques were passed down, they became incorporated into the artistic performances of imperial courts and classical Chinese dance. Form: How Method Leads Movement In classical Chinese dance, form refers mostly to movements and the movements’ actual path. The concept of the circle and circular motion is a central element of form and specific to classical Chinese dance. Ballet, in contrast, emphasizes the concept of the line. “We stress the importance of what we call ‘roundness.’ In eastern philosophy, there is a saying—’beauty in roundness.’ The path of the movements needs to be circular,” said Yungchia Chen, a principal dancer and choreographer with Shen Yun Performing Arts, in the aforementioned video. Classical Chinese dance emphasizes the integration of the whole body. Dancers

are taught to mind every detail—how the hands move up and down, how the body, the head, and the eyes move, how to use one’s breath, what the natural points of rest and relaxation are—all of these play into the making of a single movement. Form in classical Chinese dance is not only movement, but method as well. Movement itself integrates key elements: twisting, leaning, roundness, and flexion. The inner complexity of classical Chinese dance reveals itself in layers—yet the final performance appears simple, pleasant, and graceful. The simple grace of classical Chinese dance is full of expression and meaning. This unique quality is created by emphasizing a unique characteristic called physical “yun,” or bearing. Bearing: How Spirit Leads Form Bearing in classical Chinese dance can best be described as a sort of inner spirit. A dancer adds depth of emotional expression to each movement by emphasizing breath, intent, his or her own personal aura, and other intangible elements. The combination of these elements can infuse the same

movement with different meaning and energy depending on the character. “For example, Mulan is a very distinctive character,” said Michelle Ren, Shen Yun principal dancer and choreographer, in the aforementioned video. “On the battlefield she’s a female general, so her movements reflect the power and dignity of a female general. But the same movement, when she’s caring for her elderly father at home, is that of a humble young lady.” The characters portrayed in China’s epic stories all have inner depth and represent universal values. Thus, in order to portray these characters, a dancer must have a deep understanding of the values represented and be able to fully embody them. A dancer who lacks filial piety, courage, respect, and other upright character traits would be unable to perform the role of the famous characters from Chinese history. “You need them [traditional values] if you want to dance Chinese dance well,” explains Shen Yun principal dancer Chelsea Cai in an artist profile on the Shen Yun Performing Arts website. “It’s not just something shallow; you really need something on the inside and a deep understanding to be able to present something nice on the outside.” Nearly every dance performance in China’s mainland today lacks this central characteristic—the refined bearing essential to true art. “After the Cultural Revolution, on the surface it looked like there was still classical Chinese dance, but its inner spirit of traditional culture was replaced with extol-

ling communism,” said Yungchia Chen.

East and West, Old and New

The Sound of Heaven - Shen Yun’s orchestras unify two musical traditions to awaken the senses

The Chinese musical tradition dates back thousands of years, while Western classical music is relatively new in comparison. China’s rich philosophical and spiritual traditions are naturally at the heart of its music. This applies not only to the quality of the sound itself and the composition; it is deeply ingrained and even guides the mechanical process for building each instrument. “Take the pipa, for example. It stands three feet and five inches tall: the ‘three’ symbolizes heaven, earth, and man; the ‘five’ symbolizes the five elements of Chinese philosophy—metal, wood, water, fire, and earth. Then it also has four strings, symbolizing the four seasons,” said Ms. Jing Xuan, a composer and pipa player for Shen Yun Performing Arts, in an interview for the Shen Yun Performing Arts website. “Another example is the pairing of the flute and pipe, which are often played together—behind it is the idea of the auspicious dragon and phoenix pair. The flute symbolizes the dragon and the pipe symbolizes the phoenix,” she explains. This rich symbolism has been a part of China’s culture for millennia. It permeates each walk of life but is especially resonant in the arts, which have long been considered a gift from the divine. “Chinese instruments’ tonal quality is also closely tied to Chinese philosophy. Traditional Chinese culture emphasizes that all things have a spirit. Reflected in Chinese music, this means that every note is alive,” said Ms. Jing Xuan. This life is apparent in Shen Yun’s

The disparate sounds of traditional Chinese instrumentation and Western classical music have their distinct origins, characteristics, and timing, making them nearly impossible to unite. Since 2007, however, the groundbreaking orchestras for New York-based Shen Yun Performing Arts have successfully accomplished just this. By harmoniously combining a classical Western orchestra with classical Chinese instruments, the Shen Yun orchestras have unveiled a new musical realm, appreciated by countless audience members worldwide who have experienced their live performances. There are three complete Shen Yun orchestras that tour together with the three Shen Yun dance companies. The music traditions of East and West each evoke their own range of emotions and sensations. While the Western orchestra can build up energy and portray grandeur, Eastern instruments carry an intricate voice that is characteristic of China’s unique musical tradition. “Bringing out the quintessence of each of these two great musical traditions, while at the same time presenting a unified theme is one of the distinct features of Shen Yun’s compositions,” said Mr. Junyi Tan, a composer for Shen Yun Performing Arts, in an interview for the Shen Yun Performing Arts website.

www.tampabaywellness.com

musical pieces, which utilize the strengths of both musical traditions to create an exceptional level of drama, expressiveness, and depth. “When the dance story requires a grand style, we will accord a lot of emphasis on Western instruments. If there’s a need to depict Oriental sentiments or scenes, we will use Chinese instruments such as erhu, bamboo flute, and pipa, which best express deeper emotions,” Ms. Chia-Chi Lin, a conductor for Shen Yun Performing Arts, told The Epoch Times.

Dance and Music: Unprecedented Synchronization While Shen Yun’s dancers have amazed the dance world with their masterful degree of coordination and synchronization, the three Shen Yun orchestras have also received countless accolades. It is the Shen Yun conductors who serve as the medium between the dance and the music that accompanies it. “I thought the orchestra was extraordinary,” said Colin Clarke, a renowned Ontario conductor, to a New York-based newspaper, The Epoch Times, in a postperformance interview last year. “You have organic activity with the musicians who are following the conductor who in turn is watching the performance on stage. So to get a 30- to 40-piece orchestra to time their performance with the dancers who are moving at different times is a difficult task,” he said. The Chinese Character ‘Wu’ The Chinese language, as part of the Chinese culture, is believed to be imparted by the divine. As such, it has an ancient history with very deep and rich meanings. The traditional Chinese written language consists of characters that were www.tampabaywellness.com

pictographically created. They are unique in that they evoke the features and sounds of nature, infusing a mystical quality to the Chinese language. For example, 舞, “Wu,” is the Chinese character for “dance.” It evokes the image of a girl dancing. She is flowing and wearing a dress with long sleeves. Another character, also named “Wu,” is 武, referring to “Wu Shu” (martial arts). The right component of this character is 弋, the symbol of an ancient arrow. The short line at the top left of the character refers to one person while the part at the bottom left, 止, means to “stop.” Thus, this character means that one uses weapons to stop fighting, but it does not insinuate to kill lives. Thousands of years ago, an emperor would enjoy sitting in his palace watching warriors playing with weapons. That’s a kind of Wu. Therefore, in Chinese, the characters 舞 and 武 refer to two sides of the same concept. Beyond Technique, Beyond Art Audiences around the world and the elite of the musical world have praised the Shen Yun orchestras for their ability to transcend the realm of music and to fulfill the senses. “I caught my breath. I dared not even breathe. It was very, very beautiful,” said Touve Ratovondrahety, a pianist for the Ballet Opera House of Paris after watching Shen Yun perform. “I discovered this evening that all the gestures, the musical notes, and everything had a meaning. We are invited to discover spirituality.” Achieving such an effect is not a simple matter of technique. Although the musicians in Shen Yun’s orchestras come from world-famous symphonies and conservatories, it is a simple conviction that guides them to achieve such extraordinary results. According to a video on Shen Yun’s website, the Chinese have long believed that to create true art one must first have a beautiful and pure inner self. Artists, poets, and people of all walks of life valued virtues, study, and meditation. All of the performers involved in Shen Yun Performing Arts hold fast to this principle. The result is a performance worthy of its title. Translated from Chinese, Shen Yun means “divine beauty.” Tampa Bay Wellness • FEBRUARY 2012 15

ayurveda A

yurveda is India’s ancient Science of Life. In developing this science the observers of the known world, the Rishis, categorized every aspect of human health, well being and longevity. Their observations included the elements of happiness and it has long been held that the basis of all happiness is love.

Love has three dimensions: Self Love; Romantic Love; and Divine Love. Self Love As modern pilgrims on our varied paths of fulfillment, sooner or later we confront the realization that Self Love is essential for wellbeing. In Ayurveda self care is the process by which one expresses one’s love for one’s self. The way you go about your day, the foods you eat, the company you keep; the exercise you practice are components of how much value you place on you. Ayurveda, as the Science of Life gives us a complete system of self care based on achieving

balance. When you put yourself first in care you are expressing love of self. When you are in balance love is most available to you.

Romantic love Romantic love is the basis of the most longing in our culture. This longing is not unique to this time as the themes of operas and classic literature reflect. Most popular music is focused on themes of romantic love. Our culture has an almost insatiable appetite for dramas that express the seeking and winning and the losing of romantic love. Romantic love is the juice that lights the fire of committed relationships but it is not possible to sustain romantic love without Self Love as a component.

Divine Love Divine Love is pure love. For love to work at any level Divine love must be present. Divine love is either the love of the Divine or the love that dwells in the depths of your heart and

transcends all the noise of discomfort and illness and distrust and hate on Earth. For one to be available to Divine love one must first love Self and commune with the Divine within. It is not possible to love yourself when you are distracted by imbalance. Imbalance is easy to achieve in that your Doshas are susceptible to changing based on any number of factors. A cold day will make a Vata person uncomfortable or even miserable. It is difficult to be loving when you are not up to par. A hot environment can make a Pitta person angry; no one wants to be around an angry person. Kapha people, when out of balance, will withdraw from social environments and make themselves unavailable to loving. Ayurveda is a tool for health. Health is the gateway to everything good that the Earth and Universe has to offer. Ayurveda is based on love and love is...

ABHYANGA

Self Care Oil Massage Abhyanga is an Ayurvedic oil massage; traditionally using a combination of oils and herbs specific to your individual needs, and can refer to a daily self-massage technique. The main purpose of Abhyanga is to enhance the flow of vital energy (prana) by anointing your body with oil (sneha), while being attentive and loving. The Sanskrit word sneha translates as both “oil” and “love”. Abhyanga allows the subtle nature of the oil/love to move through the channels of the body and find their way into the deeper layers of bodily tissue. Ayurveda explains that being saturated with oil in abhyanga is comparable to being drenched with love. Similar to the experience of being deeply loved, abhyanga can provide a profound sense of comfort and strength.

The Ritual of Abhyanga As a daily ritual of self-care, Abhyanga is traditionally done before bathing in the early morning to help remove toxins from your body that have accumulated through the night and to prepare your body and mind for the day ahead. Most important is that it is done at a time that you are not rushed and can maintain an attitude of nurturing attention toward yourself.

The Oils for Abhyanga Choose natural, organic, cold pressed oils available in health food stores and the health food section of your grocery store. Warm oil is recommended as it is comforting and can penetrate the layers of the skin better. You can warm your Abhyanga oil by immersing the bottle in a bowl of hot water.

Preparing for Abhyanga Start by brushing your skin with a natural dry brush or coarse washcloth to remove dead skin cells. Wash and dry your face, hands and feet. Warm your Abhyanga oil. Take a few deep breaths and become fully present. Rub palms together to stimulate heat and energy in your hands, and you are ready to begin the applying the oil.

Use the ball and palm of your hands and the length of your fingers to apply the oil and perform the massage. Don’t let “technique” get in the way of your intuitive and loving touch. “Fresh and clean” smells like chemicals to me!

A

few years ago when I made the conscious decision to cut down on my exposure to everyday chemicals. I said goodbye to the “fresh and clean” chemical scents found in everything from chemical air fresheners, body lotions to laundry detergent. The manufacturers don’t have to tell you which chemicals are in their products so I decided to support companies that would disclose their ingredients. Just as I do with food, I make sure the label has simple ingredients. Now that I have a baby, this is more important than ever. According to CBS News: A new small study suggests scented laundry items contain carcinogens that waft through vents, potentially raising cancer risk. “This is an interesting source of pollution because emissions from dryer vents are essentially unregulated,” said lead author Dr. Anne Steinemann, professor of civil and environmental engineering and of public affairs at the University of Washington, said in a written statement. “If they’re coming out of a smokestack or tail pipe, they’re regulated, but if they’re coming out of a dryer vent, they’re not.” Previous studies have looked at what chemicals are released by laundry products, since manufacturers don’t have to disclose ingredients used in fragrances or laundry products. Needless to say, these researchers weren’t thrilled with what they found. For the study - published in the August issue of Air Quality, Atmosphere and Health - researchers enlisted two homeowners to volunteer their washers and dryers, which the team scrubbed clean beforehand. The researchers ran a regular laundry cycle for three scenarios in each home: once without any detergent, once with a scented liquid laundry detergent, and the last with both scented detergent and a leading brand of scented dryer sheets. Their analysis found more than 25 “volatile” air pollutants - including the carcinogens acetaldehyde and benzene. Benzene causes leukemia and other blood cancers, according to the American Cancer Society. Acetaldehyde has been shown to cause nasal and throat cancer in animal studies. Steinemann thinks agencies focus too much on limiting other pollution sources when they should look closer to home. “We focus a lot of attention on how to reduce emissions of pollutants from automobiles,” she said. “And here’s one source of pollutants that could be reduced.” The American Cleaning Institute, however, Steinemann’s study, calling the findings “shoddy science” that didn’t take into account many factors 18 FEBRUARY 2012 • Tampa Bay Wellness

like washing machine brands, different load cycles, and non-scented products. “Consumers should not be swayed by the sensationalist headlines that may come across the Internet related to this so-called research,” the Institute emailed CBS News. Yes, The American Cleaning Institute can continue to keep consumers in the dark and NOT disclose chemicals they use. I will continue to support companies that do disclose this information. You and I have a right to know--we’re paying for the product! I will also continue to cringe when I see people spray those sweet smelling air fresheners and other items that may not be so sweet for us. The reality is that most are just chemicals in a bottle. Cure Yourself…Naturally By Carolyn Harrington

I

am an adventurer by nature and when a natural remedy or method of healing comes to my attention, I jump right in and try it, if it makes sense and seems safe. I have tried many different things through the years and found some that work well and others that don’t work as well. Of course the best way to combat any disease is to avoid it in the first place! If you have a cough, it is likely that you have a cold or the flu. To feel better, try a honey elixir with powerful immune boosting ingredients. Honey has always been a time tested remedy for coughs and a wonderful throat soother. According to a 2007 Penn State study by Dr. Ian Paul, honey offers parents an effective and safe alternative to over-the-counter cough medicine. The study found that a small dose of buckwheat honey given before bedtime provided better relief of nighttime cough and sleep difficulty in children than no treatment or dextromethorphan (DM), a cough suppressant found in many OTC cold medications. Sleep is a very important element in

making sure your body stays strong and healthy. Though often ignored, good sleep is one of the cornerstones of health. To get a good night’s sleep, take a hot bath or shower to help you relax. The temperature drop from getting out of your bath signals to your body that it is time for bed. Wearing socks to bed can also help; keeping feet warm throughout the night which may prevent nighttime awakenings. Listening to relaxation CDs is another excellent way to help your body ease into a restful slumber. Many people like the soothing sounds of the ocean

or other nature sounds. Here is another old folk remedy to cure a cough or chest cold. Chop a raw garlic clove into little pieces and combine it with coconut oil. Let the mixture sit for a half an hour and then rub it into the bottoms of your feet and cover with socks. The coconut oil quickly gets absorbed by your skin and brings the natural, infection fighting garlic with it. So next time you find yourself a bit under the weather, try one of these simple treatments. You will not only see how capable you are of fighting off infection, you won’t have to worry about any side effects that may even sideline you longer. Essential Oils The Essentials Of

By Gerri Jaeger

E

ssential oils, known as nature’s living energy, are the natural, aromatic volatile liquids found in shrubs, flowers, trees, roots, bushes, and seeds. The distinctive components in essential oils defend plants against insects, environmental conditions, and disease. They are also vital for a plant to grow, live, evolve, and adapt to its surroundings. Essential oils are extracted from aromatic plant sources via steam distillation, and are highly concentrated and far more potent than dry herbs. While essential oils often have a pleasant aroma, their chemical makeup is complex and their benefits vast—which makes them much more than something that simply smells good. Historically, essential oils have played a prominent role in everyday life. With more than 200 references to aromatics, incense, and ointments throughout the Bible, essential oils are said to be used for anointing and healing the sick. Today, essential oils are used for aromatherapy, massage therapy, emotional health, personal care, nutritional supplements, household solutions, and much more.

Aromatherapy and Essential Oils Aromatherapy is the inhalation of plant oils, called essential oils, for improved physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Essential oils are the pure essence of the plant—often referred to as nature’s living energy—and can provide both psychological and physical benefits when used correctly. Essential oils can be used on their own for aromatherapy or with complementary natural ingredients, such as vegetable or carrier oils. Aromatherapy for Improved Health and Wellness Aromatherapy is one of many ways you can enjoy the therapeutic benefits of essential oils. When practicing aromatherapy it’s vital that only pure, undiluted essential oils are used. Synthetic, perfume-grade products lack the necessary level of beneficial constituents and offer little or no positive effect. There are two ways to use essential oils for aromatherapy: inhalation and topical application. 20 FEBRUARY 2012 • Tampa Bay Wellness

-Inhalation

-Topical Application

When inhaling oils for aromatherapy, here are some commonly used techniques:

Essential oils can be applied directly to the skin. Be sure to read the label before using oils topically, as some oils must be first diluted with a carrier oil prior to use. Key areas for topical application are: Crown of head Temples Behind ears Neck Upper back Abdomen Over vital organs Soles and tops of feet Ankles Steps for topical application are: Place 2–3 drops of oil in the palm of your hand or directly on the desired area. If placing oil in your hand, rub palms together in a circular motion and then massage oil onto the desired point of application. If

Inhale essential oils directly—simply smell them straight from the bottle. Diffuse essential oils using a device that disperses the oil into the air in a micro-fine vapor. Use essential oils with a humidifier. Sprinkle a few drops of essential oil on a tissue or small cloth and place in front of the escaping steam. Avoid putting the oil directly into your humidifier, as it will float on top of the water instead of dispersing with the water vapor. Pour hot water into a bowl and add a few drops of essential oil. Lower your face a few inches over the bowl and cover your head and the bowl with a towel, then breathe deeply and slowly.

applying directly to the desired area, massage the oil into your skin using a circular motion. Repeat as desired. Note: Essential oils are very potent and some may be irritating to the skin. If irritation occurs, immediately apply a carrier oil or pure vegetable oil to the area to dilute. Please read label direction for each individual oil before using.

Massage Therapy and Essential Oils Touch, body work, and massage have many positive effects on the muscle, joint, circulatory, and other body systems, and when combined with massage essential oils create a relaxing, luxurious experience that balances the mind, body, and spirit. Massage Therapy for Improved Health and Wellness Massage therapy—the treatment and practice of soft tissue manipulation with physical, functional, and psychological goals—involves massaging a person’s body in a way that increases overall wellness. Targeted pressure on the body is usually applied with hands and elbows and is said to have numerous health benefits. Massage therapy dates back more than 3,000 years. Used by the Chinese, Hindus, Egyptians, Persians, and ancient Greeks, the therapeutic benefits of various types of massage have been documented for centuries.

The Science of Massage Therapy Massage therapy has been shown to have a wide array of benefits. From anxiety reduction and pain relief to improved circulation, the therapeutic effects of touch promote all aspects of wellness. Essential oils further support the

benefits of massage therapy by enabling targeted aromatic and topical relief. Topical application of these specific oils to various areas of the body brings balance and harmony while fostering a truly holistic wellness experience. Here are some commonly used techniques for self-massage: Head massage: Rub essential oils into the base of the skull, the crown of the head, or on the temples in a circular motion. Face massage: Place a few drops of essential oils onto your hands and rub them together. Lightly cup your face in your hands; the warmth of your hands and aroma of the oils will aid in relaxation. Jaw massage: Rub 1–2 drops of oil into the soft spot just below your ear lobe to release tension. Torso massage: For a quick energy boost rub oils into the area above the kidneys. Foot massage: There are many pressure points in the feet that correspond to other body systems. Rubbing the soles of the feet with essential oils is a great way to release tension.

Emotional Health and Essential Oils The natural properties found in essential oils produce a soothing, uplifting effect on the mind and emotions which allow for natural stress and depression relief. When an oil containing the optimum level of therapeutic constituents is diffused or applied topically, the result fosters a sense of emotional balance and well-being. Essential Oils for Improved Emotional Wellness Smell is the only one of the five senses directly linked to the limbic lobe—the emotional control center—of the brain. From anxiety

to depression, fatigue to stress, essential oils have long been appreciated for their uplifting, calming, and clarifying effects on emotional wellness. By diffusing essential oils or applying them topically to targeted areas of the body, therapeutic constituents reestablish balance where stress, depression, or mental discomfort has disrupted healthy emotional function. To bring yourself into a natural state of emotional balance, consider using essential oils for aromatherapy and massage therapy.

Natural Household Solutions Don’t think that essential oils can only be used for aromatherapy or massage therapy— they have so much more to offer! While going about your daily household tasks you’ve probably stopped to consider the effects of artificial flavoring in foods or the synthetic compounds in your household cleaner. More than likely you’ve wondered if these mystery ingredients are even safe to use in your home. Essential oils can eliminate these concerns when you incorporate them into your daily household routine. Replacing man-made synthetics with natural, plant-based essential oils removes questionable ingredients from your home and adds countless benefits. Whether you use essential oils to infuse your favorite dishes with flavor, clean your home without harmful chemicals, or supplement your existing first-aid kit with plant-based solutions, they’re sure to safely and naturally enhance your experience. Shhh...Did You Hear That?

I

’ve written in the past about how our mind’s thoughts should not be believed and how meditation helps us learn this. Beyond our mind’s thoughts, or everyday chatter, doubts, complaints, worries, reviews of situations, projections into the future whether with fantasy or fear, and its mechanisms of “checking-out” when it says that “this is too much” - so we eat that certain food, shop, drink that certain drink, go on the internet and surf, watch tv etc. - there is a Higher version of ourselves. The one that seems to lurk in the background, silently there, only whispering its thoughts in those quieter moments, or tugging on our hearts in the more inspired, “sunset at the beach” moments. It is also the one that directs us to the gym, to yoga class, to cleaning up the clutter, to spontaneously making that call to that person for that new connection - and the one that is vibrantly alive in the here and now, and is able to pull up off of the mind’s thoughts when meditating and return this consciousness, or awareness, back to our breath. If we did not have a higher Self, if we were not composed of more than just the everyday mind within our consciousness, then this act would not be possible. Do you see? Yet, typically, we’re buying into our limitations. Our ego-mind, that everyday mind of our smaller self, is based on protection. And so it is going to have us believe a limited version of ourselves. That’s the nature of the repeti-

By Alison J. Kay

tive mental chatter, whether directed at ourselves or others. But why we come here is to know an expanded version of ourselves, as high as we can take ourselves, based on listening more to the Higher Self’s quieter voice. To get to this Higher version of ourselves, it seems there are two levels to meditation. I’ve been actively meditating for 20 years with a daily, fully developed practice, while teaching meditation for 11 years now, and have written a book on meditation. One of the most common misunderstandings about meditation in the West is that once we sit down, BAM!, our thoughts should stop. We should be able to make our thoughts stop. And when we find out just how incessantly active our mind is, we think we’ve failed. And that we could never meditate “the way it’s supposed to be done” or “it’s too hard.” Oh no. This is the meat of meditation - realizing this noise goes on. And that it will continue to go on even when we’re not following along with our Higher Self’s attention. Almost as if we could just put the brain with its chattering mind, like those plastic wind up teeth that chatter, in a jar on the shelf as if Dr. Jekyl, and we could go about our day a lot quieter. This is one of the primary levels that beginning meditators struggle with. And none of the monks with 40 years of solid meditation practice have minds without

thoughts during meditation either, by the way. I know, I lived in Asia for 10 years, met many, studied with many, and got my yoga & meditation teacher training in India. But to get through this struggle into the recognition that this is the nature of the mind is when you’ve hit your first major gain. This comes after a whole lot of simply pulling our Higher Self’s awareness/attention back to the breath. It is a muscle, and like we have to do bicep curls or a whole lot of chaturangas in yoga, it needs this repeating action to develop the muscle. The second level that I am leading into is that of emotions. But that’s for another time. A good bottom line question that I give to my students and clients is: So we really need to determine how far are we willing to go to see the most celebrated aspect of self, of essence, out into the world? By the way, your essence really wants to experience this expanded version of you.

omeopathy is a medicine that is both safe and effective for people of all ages and stages in life. Homeopathy takes different properties from nature (plants, elements, bacteria and so on) and converts them into healing remedies. Homeopaths study and learn the characteristics that define the active agent of each remedy in order to appropriately prescribe them. It is this knowledge that is key to the success of homeopathy and has proven to be most effective in diagnosis and treatment. There are a great number of children who yearly avoid tubes in their ears thanks to the wonders of homeopathy. Adult arthritis sufferers have stopped taking inflammatory medications once they’ve found the remedy best suited for them. Adults and children alike who have suffered from chronic eczema have been greatly helped with homeopathy, after all other medicines have failed them. These are merely a few examples of where homeopathy can really be a savior. A visit to a homeopath typically includes the homeopath asking many questions which on the surface might seem irrelevant. Among the many questions asked are concerning: natural tendencies, food choices, physical or emotional ailments, because from the Homeopath’s perspective it isn’t of primary concern what the name of the affliction is, rather how it affects you individually. Homeopathy investigates the ‘entire person’, looking to see where there are ‘imbalances’ and in response, balances the whole body. Yet, Homeopathy stabilizes the body in a way that is specific to the individual person, and who she is. For example; if five people come down with the ‘flu’, each person will have contracted the same virus, but it will manifest with different symptoms depending on the individual. One person may have a high fever while another a low grade fever. One may suffer from muscle pain and sweating, while the other will have bone pain and be chilly. Five different people with the same flu may require five different homeopathic remedies, because everyone’s body will react differently to similar experiences. To a homeopath, like a loving parent, each person is seen as a unique and individual being. Homeopaths strive to discover who a person truly is in order to prescribe a remedy that both matches the illness as well as the inimitable qualities of that person. Though it is often a long and arduous process for a Homeopath to really get to know the person as a multi-faceted human being, it is ultimately necessary, because once a Homeopath gets to know you, the results of homeopathic medicines are safe, long lasting and easy to use without the presence of uncomfortable side effects.
