Natural Product Association to define 'natural' food

There's NO HONEY In It!

with certification

B

eginning in 2012, a more concrete definition of "natural" will emerge in the natural food marketplace, and it's not FDA at the helm. The Natural Product Association (NPA) plans to release its latest natural seal for two categories of food to provide a much-needed definition of "natural" for consumers, retailers and manufacturers. Since the NPA launched its natural seal for home care products two-and-a-half years ago, the nonprofit has been eyeing the food category. Recent consumer outcry, in the form of class action lawsuits against ConAgra and Kashi, has provided momentum for the NPA to develop the food seal, which will join its two current natural

seals for home and personal care products. The organization has identified six food categories, and will begin to roll out standards for two of them next year: snacks & cereals and meat & poultry. "Consumers are screaming out right now for someone to define 'natural,'" said Cara Welch, NPA's vice president of scientific and regulatory affairs. At the same time, the NPA is carefully crafting the definition to leave the doors open for innovative manufacturers to join the natural products industry. "We need to make a strong statement to industry—this is what we believe natural is—but it can't be so strong that we cut all of industry out of it," she said.

he best honey is pure raw honey. Adulterated honey is mostly real honey with additives, which should be listed on the label. Then there is imitation or fake honey. It is usually a syrupy concoction of cane sugar or high fructose corn syrup in water with colorings and binding additives, and maybe a small amount of honey. Both pure and adulterated honeys have similar identification markings, pollen. Fake honey has no pollen. Honey can be legitimately filtered to remove wax and other large particles. But ultra-filtering removes the pollen completely. Almost 80% of the brands from big box grocers and pharmacies tested by Food Safety News had no trace of pollen. Add 100% without pollen in those little packets of honey provided by airlines and restaurants. Products are listed here (http://www.foodsafetynews. com/2011/...). Despite even congressional demands that the FDA do something to curb the fraud, the FDA refuses. "Ultra filtering makes no sense," asserted Mark Jensen, president of the American Honey Producers Association. He went

on to say no real honey producer would do that because it's costly and diminishes quality. But Jensen added this stinger: "In my judgment, it is pretty safe to assume that any ultra-filtered honey on store shelves is Chinese honey and it's even safer to assume that it entered the country in violation of federal law." Chinese honey is fake funny honey that bypasses strict tariffs, imposed a few years ago to keep cheap Chinese honey from squeezing USA bee keepers out of the honey market. The reason it's so cheap is that it usually has no honey in it! Co-ops, farmers markets, and respected health food stores all had high marks from Food Safety News. Pollen showed up in all the products tested. So the worst honey you could get from them is adulterated, i.e. containing mostly real raw honey partially filtered with some additives. Again, your best bet is raw, unfiltered honey from a reliable source. It's worth the extra cost for its nutritional and healing properties. ella is Italian for "beautiful" and Prana is Sanskrit for "Breath". Bella Prana means "Beautiful Breath" and first began when Roni decided to learn more about meditation. Meditation led her to yoga and she quickly knew she wanted to share these ancient and yet cutting edge practices. Bella Prana is founded on the desire to provide our community with a safe, warm environment where they can encounter themselves on every level. Bella Prana, as a studio, believes that yoga is the most efficient way to care for yourself. In every class you are given an opportunity to challenge yourself physically, calm yourself mentally, and if you choose, expand spiritually. We strive to make the studio a place where people of every belief, fitness level, and

chapter of life can ease onto the mat with confidence. Bella Prana began in South Tampa in a small room that could hold only 5 people. We outgrew the room and moved to an outside patio, within 6 months a leap of faith led us to leave the summer heat and pesky mosquito's behind for an expanded studio space. Doors opened in June of 2010 with Roni as the only instructor; we now have 15 instructors on staff and they are some of Tampa’s most exciting, innovative and passionate yogi’s! 2408 South MacDill Ave. Tampa, FL.

The Right to Reinvent Yourself Photos By M2Studios

E

ckhart Tolle wrote “Evolve or Die”. During a trying time in my life I had those words hanging in my room. That sentence resonated with me on every level. I literally felt that things either had to change or things were going to end. The other quote that hung on my wall said “The recognition of insanity is the beginning of sanity”. To me this meant that I didn’t have to try to tackle my whole life and everything about myself I wanted to be better. At that moment all I was able to do was call the crazy crazy every time it popped up. Over and over in my mind I met my own thoughts and said “you’re not true”. We have all had that moment, at the end of a job or a relationship

where we sat there and thought “Well I can’t keep feeling like this, something has to change”. That’s the one beautiful thing about depression, things can’t get worse so you have to nothing to lose. Even more exciting is that we don’t have to be depressed to realize we have nothing to lose. Every single moment you can make a u-turn, you can decide to be different, you can change the course of your entire life. You can reinvent your world the way an artist throws away a painting and puts up a blank canvas, armed with a better vision for what they were trying to create.

Here is what I learned in my experience. First, you have to want it enough. You have to ask yourself if this change is more than a desire but a calling. It has been said we don’t make changes based on what we know, we make changes based on what we feel. A desire big enough to elicit this kind of change cannot be chosen, it rises up and chooses you. Then you have to stop the excuses, be cause their always crap. Then you fake it. Act like the person you want to be, pretend you have the life you want to have. www.tampabaywellness.com

Reinventing yourself is simple, not easy, but simple. Every time you think something that doesn’t mesh with the person you want to be you reject it. You do this as many times as it takes until you literally re-train your brain. Reinventing yourself is a spiritual process but it begins with understanding the science behind it. It has been proven that the way we think can overcome our life experiences and genetics. If your reaction to difficulty has always been anger, those synapses in the brain develop a strong connection. So when difficulty arises the brain will revert to the strongest connections to then tell you how you feel. The good news is that Continued on Page 14

you can build other connections…any ones you want. So every time you feel angry, you stop yourself and think of compassion, even if you still feel angry…keep thinking of compassion. You’re building a bridge and eventually, through your souls hard work, that connection will be the stronger one. Then next time you experience difficulty your brain will revert to the strongest connection and simply because you wanted it enough, it becomes your reality. Ellie Weizel, a Holocaust survivor, spoke about how in the worst of circumstances no man can take from you the way you choose to think about it. The way we choose to think is our greatest weapon. That bears repeating. The way you choose to think is your greatest weapon in this life.

The following is an excerpt from my journal, a very personal thing to put out there but I found myself re-reading over the past years as a reminder. I had quit my job and gone by myself to Africa. I wrote this on safari and I can still feel the intensity when I read my words. I meant it with every fiber of my being and although the worst was still to come I look back on this entry as the beginning of my reinvention.

aaaaa

Kenya 2007 …“I want to quit “trying” to be the woman I want to be and realize I’m already her. I don’t want to be afraid anymore. I don’t want to fear what I will do or how I would do it, who it will be with and whether it will be forever. I want to conspire with the universe. I want to know that she is always working for me. Here is the truth, uncut: Whatever I do it will fulfill me. However I do it will be an adventure free from the yolk of tension and image.

That’s the science behind the reinvention of a human life. The soul of it lies in believing beyond belief that you are loved and that you deserve the life you want. There is no person, book, convention, or inspirational quote that can convince you of this fact. This understanding can only come from that quiet place within yourself that we often only access through sadness. It is the place where you meet God, where he gives you a glimpse of the pride he feels when he thinks about you. There is no circumstance, no problem, no experience, no darkness that is greater than you are. You can choose something different. Sometimes those choices will anger others, but that’s none of your business. Because if their happiness is relying on your unhappiness then that relationship is toxic. Your new path may not look the way the people in your life or your culture wants, you may even shock yourself. But if what you’ve been doing isn’t working, stop doing it. That ineffective way of life will always be waiting there for you if you want to return. You have nothing to lose. Any person you may lose as a result of your new choices you never really had. Be selfish, be brave, be unapologetic. Reinvent yourself! 14 DECEMBER 2011 • Tampa Bay Wellness

Whoever I will be with will be the one. We will laugh and live and love fearlessly and with reckless abandon. It will last forever, as far as the plains I am looking at now and surely as I am a child of God. This is the truth, because I say so. And the fight has begun. I will manifest in my life a way of living that pleases me. I will not be a slave to my gene’s, circumstances, weight, image, or expectation. The book I was reading asked “What is your word?” the word that describes you, as best as a word can. I have absolutely no idea. But I know this. If it’s out there, I’ll find it. I am reclaiming my days. I will no longer pass them out to the lowest bidder. Insecurity, fear, and hurry sure are cheap bastards. I am beautiful, charming, exquisite, pleasure with skin on.” - Roni

Visualization: A Simple Way To Get Happier By Dr. Kristin Keough

M

ost people want to feel better, perform better, and be happy. Visualization is a tool used to accomplish these goals. Visualization can enhance performance, improve sleep, reduce stress and anxiety, and increase relaxation. It is a mental process in which you focus on an image or intention to help bring about change and improvement. Visualization trains your brain to act in a way that is conducive to the outcomes you want. You give your mind the confidence it needs to produce the results you are looking to attain. For example, if you imagine yourself acting confidently in a job interview and being hired, you are more likely to present yourself well in the

16 DECEMBER 2011 • Tampa Bay Wellness

interview because you saw yourself being successful. Conversely, negative images can hinder you. For example, if you imagine yourself being nervous in front of your boss, you then you go to a meeting and stumble over your words. Visualization can help distract you from the negative and help you refocus on the positive. For instance, you can imagine each negative thought or image being thrown away and shredded. Conversely, you may envision yourself being the CEO of your own life having the power and control to manage your decisions and being able to find solutions to your problems. Research has also shown that people can enhance their performance just by thinking about the

act of doing well in a particular activity. Studies have shown that athletes can improve their performance just by visualizing themselves getting better and being successful. Think of all the game winning shots that were missed not because of the athlete’s abilities but because they doubted themselves and were thinking about the consequences of missing. By focusing on missing, they told their brain to do the one thing they did not want to happen. However, when you look at leading athletes like Phil Mickelson, you see that they are confident in their abilities and focus on how they will produce the results they want. You can use visualization to improve your golf score or even to help you become

www.tampabaywellness.com

more confident in public speaking. If you imagine walking across stage and tripping, you will probably trip. Conversely, if you imagine yourself walking up to a podium, speaking confidently and clearly, and getting a round of applause, you are more likely to act in a way that is consistent with your beliefs and get that round of applause. People don’t often improve or get better at things just because of their inherent abilities, but rather because of their drive and belief that they can be successful. Visualization can also address the many side effects of stress, which include pain and medical illnesses. Cancer patients have been known to fight tumors

Life is too short to be unhappy, start living the life you deserve today. by imagining that their white blood cells are warriors that protect their body and fight off the cancer cells. Others find relaxation and pain reduction by utilizing all their senses such as visualizing themselves in a garden, soaking up the sun, smelling the flowers, and feeling the cool wind on their skin. You can tailor the visual to you, and it can be funny, creative, or as unique as you need it. For instance, one image that helps me is thinking about all my worries being scooped up into a sack and being thrown into a volcano. It may not work all the time, but it often helps a lot, which is why you may need to alternate the visuals you use. People often have difficulty falling asleep because of their racing thoughts as their mind and body has been stressed throughout the day. Problems with sleep can be addressed with visualization by focusing on positive things before you go to bed such as a recent vacation you took, your fantasies such as being a rock star, or imagining that you will have a sound and deep sleep. It is however important to relax throughout the day so you allow your body the ability to fall asleep at night. If you are stressed all day your body may not be ready to relax just because you are ready for sleep. You can however use visualization throughout the day to promote relaxation and make it easier for yourself to get to sleep at night. For example, you may sit or lie down, taking time to create an entire scene in your mind, or focus on brief images such as visualizing your co-workers clapping for you, petting your dog, or thinking about playing with a laughing baby. Recent studies have shown that just by thinking about happy things such as a cute puppy, a happy memory, or a time when you had a major accomplishment, people’s happy chemicals, Serotonin, actually increase in the brain and the person feels better. If you focus and think about happy things you will tend to feel happier. Visualization contributes to mind-body wellness by lowering the stress producing hormones cortisol and adrenaline. It allows you to focus on positive thoughts and think more clearly, and releases tension that you may be holding in your muscles. Visualization contributes to mind-body wellness by lowering the stress producing hormones cortisol and adrenaline. It allows you to focus on positive thoughts and think more clearly, and releases tension that you may be holding in your muscles. During the visualization process you can imagine thoughts that provide you happiness and comfort. For a fuller effect, you can incorporate all of your senses. For example to produce a feeling of serenity, you might imagine yourself lying on the beach with your feet on the cool sand while you listen to the ocean waves. You may think of the birds flying above you, smell the saltiness of the ocean, and feel the warmth of the sun on your skin. While you lie on the beach, you only focus on your senses and the calmness around you. You tell yourself that you are in a serene and peaceful place and that you can return www.tampabaywellness.com

to this place in your mind whenever you want. You may close your eyes and breathe deeply while visualizing. As you can see, visualization is a unique tool that can help you find more happiness and fulfillment in your life. Whether you need courage, strength, or just a little more serenity in your life, visualization can help prepare and encourage your mind to help you make the changes you want. There are many ways to use visualization; so be creative! Include things that stimulate your senses such spa music, calming sounds such as a waterfall, smells such as lavender, comfy materials such as fleece, or tastes such as pineapple, which may help you feel more tropical. Next time you are in a peaceful place you may also want to close your eyes and connect with the sensations around you so you can use those feelings in the future when you are having a bad day. Use visualization often so it comes more naturally to you when you really need it. The more you practice it, the sooner you will be able to see that you are able to relax even just by thinking about a certain image. You can practice the visualization on your own, download an application on your phone, buy a CD, or see a therapist that specializes in visualization or hypnosis. Life is too short to be unhappy, start living the life you deserve today. Remember, life is what you make it, so why not make it great?! Dr. Kristin Keough is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist and Certified Addiction Professional. She works for Achieve Wellness Group, in a private practice setting. Heather's Report On The Dangers Of Cell Phone Radiation, And What You Can Do To Minimize Your Exposure

A

new federal study suggests holding your cell phone near your brain causes the brain to react, but they don't know how it impacts your health. Researchers at the National Institutes of Health studied the PET scans of 47 patients. They held cell phones to their heads for 50 minutes. The phones were either on, muted or off. Researchers found activity on the side of the brain close to the cell phone was significantly higher compared to no exposure. They concluded more longterm studies are needed.

18 DECEMBER 2011 • Tampa Bay Wellness

Cell phones emit radiation. No one knows definitively how daily radiation exposure will impact kids & adults down the road. I like to make informed decisions. If I am deciding between two phones, I would want to know if one exposes me to twice as much radiation. Cell phones vary dramatically in how much radiation they give off. California lawmakers are considering forcing cell phone companies to post how much radiation the phone emits on cell phone packages, but I found a great website that helps you compare cell phone radiation levels right now. I never like to assume safety, so I bought a hollow tube earpice (for about $37.00) to use when I'm going to be on the phone more than 5 minutes. Devra Davis is the director of the University of Pittsburgh's Center for Environmental Oncology. Her group recently put out recommendations that we should be using a speakerphone or ear piece. The report says children, who have thinner skulls and developing brains, should use cell phones only in case of emergency. And heaven forbid anyone should carry a cell phone in a pocket or clipped to a belt. "You're just roasting your bone marrow," Davis said. Although there are many large studies (industry funded studies) showing no connection between mobile phones and cancer, there are a few that do. As Davis puts it, do you really want to play Russian roulette with your head? But if you do buy the cellphones-cause-cancer argument, you have to figure out the best way to talk on a cell phone, seeing as how most of us can't live without them. Should you use the wired headset that came with your phone? A Bluetooth earpiece? Cell phones have been wildly popular for only a matter of years, and it can take at least a decade for cancers to show up. Studies contradict each other, and scientists bicker: Some will tell you with great conviction that there's nothing to worry about. Others will tell you with equal conviction that an epidemic of brain tumors may be just around the corner. The cell phone industry itself says "the overwhelming majority of studies www.tampabaywellness.com

4. Use a "hollow tube" earpiece It's just like a regular wired earpiece, except the last six inches or so - the part next to your ear - is a hollow tube. There's no wire under the plastic. "You're getting the sound through the air. You're not dependent on radiofrequency waves," said Dr. David Carpenter, director of the Institute for Health and the Environment at the University of Albany. Hollow tube earpieces can be purchased on several Web sites.

5. Get a phone with less radiation

that have been published (and paid for by the industry) show that wireless phones do not pose a health risk." Resarchers can agree that cell phones do emit radiation. No one knows definitively whether it's enough to worry about. Mobile phones meet federal safety limits, but if you're still worried, there are some simple steps you can take to lower your exposure to radiation.

1. Use the speakerphone This was, without question, the favorite alternative of the experts I talked to. Nothing is near your head. "Hold it away from a minimum of a few inches. A foot or two is ideal," said Magda Havas, an associate professor with the Institute for Health Studies at Trent University in Ontario, Canada. Every inch you can get away from your body, the radiation reduces very quickly. "Hold it out two inches, and the radiation drops by a factor of four. Hold it out four inches, and it drops by a factor of 16," she says. In other words, said Louis Slesin, editor of Microwave News, "every millimeter counts."

Phone radiation is measured in specific absorption rate, or SAR. To look up the SAR for your phone, check this list on CNET.com. You might think the experts mentioned above all use earpieces or a speakerphone. Not so. Several said they hold it right up to their heads because they use their cells so infrequently, they're not worried about radiation. "I use it maybe once or twice a week, no more than 10 minutes," said Challis, the former head of the British committee that studied cell phones and radiation. "I use a land line whenever I can." It's the exposure, day after day, year after year, that matters. As Challis, who's retired, puts it, "If I were younger, I'd take this much more seriously." Heather Van Nest is a community leader, Co-Anchor on 10-News and an avid health enthusiast Heather brings a wealth of knowledge and resources to our magazine, and to you. According to Heather, "Working in a newsroom gives me the opportunity to research the latest studies, see if there's any truth to the next health trend and connect you with some of the Bay area's top holistic medical doctors to answer your questions." We look forward to a long-term, healthy relationship with Heather. In addition to seeing her in Tampa Bay Wellness you may also visit her natural health blog at: wtsp.com/heather

A Bluetooth earpiece still has radiation, but it's at least 100 times less than the radiation you get when you hold a cell phone to your head, Havas says. Our experts were split on which was better: a Bluetooth headset or a wired one. Israeli government recommendations issued this week specifically suggest a wire; Havas likes the Bluetooth. But even she says not to wear it when you're not talking; it still sends out a signal. "Bluetooth is only whispering radiation into your ear. The problem is, some people wear it all the time," she says. "At the very least, switch it from ear to ear so you don't have too much exposure on one side." Michael Foley, Ph.D., executive director of the Bluetooth Special Interest Group, says Bluetooth earpieces radiate 200 times less energy than cell phones. "There is no evidence that a Bluetooth headset has any adverse effects on its users," he said.

The Sentient Temple is lead by Dr Rev. Dennis Alexander and Dr Rev. Fern Alexander. Both Dennis and Fern are Karuna, Shamballa and Reiki Masters. They have traveled the world teaching and learning the cultures and traditional medicines of many indigenous peoples. Most recently, the founders of The Sentient Temple stepped back 5,000 years into Medical Qigong. It was then that Chinese Physicians came to understand that everything is composed of the same energetic substance called Qi (pronounced: chee).

A ferrite bead is a clip you put on the wire of a headset. The concern is that the wire itself emits radiation into your ear. The bead is designed to absorb the radiation so you don't. They're inexpensive and available at stores or online. These clips are a favorite of Slesin's. "It's the way to go," he said. Another fan: Lawrie Challis, physicist and former chair of the Mobile Telecommunications and Health Research Programme, a government panel in Britain. "They did tests at the University of York and found that under even the worst conditions, if you use a ferrite bead, you can't even measure the radiation coming off the wire. This common device kills the radiation." Of course, if the phone is in your pocket or clipped to your belt, all bets are off, because the phone itself will be radiating into your body. So if you're worried about radiation, keep the phone as far away as possible, and Challis adds to do your best to make sure the wire isn't touching your body.

Staying Fit

though the Holidays

S

ince the holidays are upon us, Body Dynamics is well aware of those holiday challenges everyone experiences this time of year. Your busy, your stressed and the holiday season is busy enough to derail your exercise program. Slacking off on your fitness program during the holidays will only leave you with more pounds -- and more stress -- come New Year's. At Body Dynamic’s Fitness their experts recognize that this time of year is difficult for many people trying to stick to an exercise program, so we have some suggestions to keep you motivated and disciplined. The first step is to acknowl20 DECEMBER 2011 • Tampa Bay Wellness

edge the holidays probably will affect your exercise program to some extent. Then you can make adjustments in your schedule that will help you stay fit during the season. Just remember the goal is not to do more (as we all have a tendency to do this time of year), but to do less, but do it all well." Here are a few tips to help you stay fit during the holidays. • To save time, combining exercising and family commitments. For example, take the family for a walk on the beach or a bike ride. Walking is an exercise that can go anywhere from the beach to the mall. Add some small hand weights and you have a great cardio

work-out to burn those extra calories during the holidays. You will cross train a little and still spend time with loved ones. • Be flexible when your days get busy or family is in town. Instead of simply blowing off your trip to the gym, wake up an hour earlier that day to go to work out or walk/ jog before work or on your lunch hour. • Mix up your routine to avoid boredom. The novelty of the new exercise will hopefully be a stronger motivator to get you to stay active during busy holiday times. Increase your time management skills over the holiday season. Organize your day the evening before. Prioritizing your tasks beforehand will help www.tampabaywellness.com

you find time to exercise. Each week, make it a priority to fit in three exercise sessions. • Set up an appointment with a Personal Trainer which will help you make a commitment to be there regardless of how busy you get. Please feel free to come on in or give us a call at 727-347-4445 or shoot us an EMAIL bodydynamicsemail@yahoo.com if you would like more information on better managing your holidays with exercise.

Pivot the front foot towards the front of the room, move the back heel slightly behind the toes. Bring hands to the waist or open arms shoulder height (as in Warrior 2). Strengthen the legs from the feet up to the hips as in Tadasasana. Inner thighs feel as if they’re magnets drawn to one another, hips feel as though they too are being drawn to each other. Allow your torso to grow tall out of the hips, gaining height in your spine and side bodies. Keep the tail bone tucked under. Gaze over your front shoulder (back shoulder to improve on grace) or your front extended arm’s middle finger; should you choose that option. Extend your torso across the room gaining length under the left side of the body. Then lower the bottom arm and extend the top (not required). Stack arms shoulder over shoulder.

How to Detoxify The Body and Get Beautiful Skin, a Leaner Waistline & Energy to Spare By Susan Smith Jones, PhD

L

eading holistic health educator and author Susan Smith Jones, PhD, reveals her favorite methods to detoxify and rejuvenate the body. For over 35 years, Dr. Susan has relied on herbs from Nature’s Wonderland to detox her body and maintain her health. Because of her regimen, Susan has not used prescription medicine nor had a

cold or the flu in 25 years. In her new books “The Joy Factor: 10 Sacred Practices for Radiant Health” and “Detoxify & Rejuvenate: Dr. Susan’s Gold-Star Secrets to Beautiful Skin, a Leaner Waistline & Energy to Spare” she shows exactly how to fully detoxify and rejuvenate your body so you can look and feel your very best. Under ideal conditions, the body's expertly designed detoxification system expels toxins through the lungs, skin, kidneys and intestines. But in modern life, we've come to overtax our systems a great deal. Due to the stresses of our fast-paced society, we are often sleep deprived, fraught with anxiety and overfull of nutritionally void fast foods, so our bodies are unable to perform the deeper level of detoxification that is necessary to avert the accumulation of ordinary toxins. Add to this the toxins that we've introduced to our world within the past fifty years -- including synthetic chemicals, air and water pollutants, heavy metals, prescription drugs and trans fatty acids -- and it's clear that we're piling on much more than our natural detoxification systems were designed to handle. Allopathic (Western) medicine is beginning to turn its attention to ways in which this "detox debt" is contributing to widespread ailments such as headaches, bowel irregularities, allergies and depression, as well as the epidemic levels of "diseases of civilization" such as cancer, cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Modern practitioners have begun to investigate the efficacy of ancient healing practices to bolster the body's detox mechanisms. While many detoxification programs

22 DECEMBER 2011 • Tampa Bay Wellness

are still viewed skeptically because of the potential health risks they pose (such as intensive juicing and fasting "fad" cleansing programs), there is a growing consensus that when used properly, herbs and nutritionally rich foods can help coax the body into a deeper level of detoxification than its normal baseline and thereby quell many conditions associated with toxicity. According to Susan, “completing a beneficial detoxification program is like working with a clean slate: Not only will you be helping to prevent the onset of disease in the long term, but you will also notice beneficial changes in the short term, including weight loss, clear skin and renewed energy, just to name a few.” Here are some of the recommendations from her books that Dr. Susan uses in her detoxification programs:

Cape Aloes

Cape Aloes is a palm-like plant native to South Africa’s Cape region. The dried resin is a powerful stimulant laxative for prompt, effective relief of occasional constipation and healthy lower bowel function. While belonging to the family of the Aloe species, Cape Aloes is considerably stronger and should not to be confused with the commonly known Aloe Vera. It is often effective within 15-18 hours. Look for Nature’s Wonderland 775mg vegetarian capsules available at Penn Herb Company – www.PennHerb.com.

Cascara Sagrada

The Kutenai, Yurok, and other Native American groups of the North American Pacific www.tampabaywellness.com

region highly valued cascara for its laxative action. Today, this gentle cleanser is still known as one of the most reliable herbs for promoting regularity and colon health. Cascara's "moving" properties became popular after Native Americans introduced it to the Spanish explorers, who then called it cascara sagrada or sacred bark. It later entered the realms of mainstream health when it was included in several over-thecounter laxative formulas. Cascara is currently cited in several European Pharmacopoeias for relief of constipation and as a stool softener. Available in 625mg vegetarian capsules.

Psyllium Husks

Psyllium husks, an excellent source of fiber, cleanses the colon and maintains regularity. Psyllium husks are the dried outer shell of the psyllium seed. It acts as a gentle, non-stimulant laxative (no cramping) to relieve occasional constipation and to help “sweep” the colon of toxins. Its naturally abundant content of soluble fiber makes Psyllium husks an ideal resource for incorporating this important ingredient into your diet. Available in 750mg vegetarian capsules.

HERBAL FORMULAS

While each of the aforementioned herbs is individually effective for colon cleansing, many herbal blends combine the power of several herbs in order to compound their efficacy. These formulas from Nature's Wonderland offer effective combinations:

Bowel Cleanser (S10X)

The laxative properties of Cape aloes are augmented by rhubarb and buckthorn (which also flush out unfriendly bacteria), while peppermint relieves the gas and bloating often associated with occasional constipation. Contains: buckthorn bark, peppermint, rhubarb root, and Cape aloes.

Herbal Purifying Laxative (S40X)

Senna is a stimulant laxative that relieves constipation. Malva, saffron, and peppermint soothe gastric upset, prevent intestinal cramping and alleviate gas and bloating. Linden and elder flowers support normal kidney function and urinary tract health. Buckthorn and pansy leaves promote bowel regularity. In addition to the herbal support recommended above, Dr. Susan also suggests the following 5 steps to detoxifying and rejuvenating the body: 1. Drink plenty of purified water daily. 2. Sleep at least 7-8 hours nightly. 3. Practice deep breathing throughout the day to keep stress down. 4. Engage in a hobby such as gardening, museum outings or bird watching. 5. Exercise regularly so you can sweat and promote vitality. ● For 30 years, Susan Smith Jones, PhD, taught students, staff and faculty at UCLA how to be healthy and fit. She is the author of over 27 books, including her latest bestseller just released The Joy Factor: 10 Sacred Practices for Radiant Health (Conari Press, 2011). Visit Dr. Susan online at www. Happy holidays

H

appy holidays to everyone! So many world religions celebrate this time of year, whether it is Hanukkah, Winter Solstice, Kwanzaa, Saturnalia, or Christmas. In all of these holidays one theme rings true...the celebration of light and the Sun. We reach the darkest time of the year, the Winter Solstice (December 22nd), when the Sun's movement south reaches the southern most point and appears to stand still for a few days. From that time forward, the suns power grows and our days gradually become longer. This time is symbolic of the birth of life itself. It's a time to rest, celebrate, and meditate on the year that has passed. We are on the threshold between one year and another. Traditionally, no one worked during this time. No wheels turned, no spinning of thread, no milling of grains, and no wagons rolled. Only sleighs could be used. People removed their wheels and used them as holiday wreaths. Yule means wheel in Olde English. The wheel of time is passing. The spirit of caroling, feasts and gift giving during this time of year can be traced back to the early Mesopotamians. Around 325 AD,

24 DECEMBER 2011 • Tampa Bay Wellness

Saint Nicholas was known for his charity and wisdom. He came from a wealthy family and gave all of his money to the poor. As legend spread, pilgrims who visited St. Nick’s shrine took the legend back to their country, each country taking on different characteristics. It is pretty obvious that we celebrate Christmas with lots of lights and honoring the birth of Jesus, the ultimate light. What about the other holidays? Hanukkah is celebrated over an 8-day time period, beginning three days before the dark moon closest to the Solstice. This makes it the darkest hour of the year. The main practice of Hanukkah is the lighting of candles on the Menorah, an additional candle each night, until all 8 are lit. The candles are lit as soon as possible after the stars come out and left burning for a half an hour. Nobody works when the candles are lit. Kwaanza is another festival welcoming the light. It is an African American festival where seven qualities of African culture are emulated. Seven candles are lit in the Kinara to symbolize these qualities. It is a time of endings and beginnings, celebration, community gathering

and reflection. Yule (Winter Solstice) is the shortest day and longest night of the year. Native Americans and other native peoples celebrated this holiday long ago and some still do today. It signifies the birth of the sun and of life itself. The sun gains power as the days start to grow longer. The sun’s movement south during the winter reaches southern most point at Winter Solstice and appears to stand still for a few days. On the Winter Solstice the Earth tilts away from the sun so the sun seems farther south. At the Summer Solstice, we are tilted towards the sun receiving a lot of light. Each hemisphere of the Earth is exactly six months opposite the other. So when it is Winter Solstice in the Northern Hemisphere, it is Summer Solstice in the Southern Hemisphere. During this dark time, notice all of your accomplishments, no matter how small. Rejoice in the presence of your families and loved ones. All of these holidays are welcoming the return of the Sun God, whatever form you perceive him. However you choose to celebrate, know that WE ARE ALL ONE! www.tampabaywellness.com

echnology has provided some amazing changes in our lives. However, many of these cool new devices are steering us away from some of our most basic needs. The need to be healthy, to feel nurtured and supported, and to connect with the earth, are taking back seat to the “no human touch” trend of technology today. The ancient practice of yoga brings us back to center, re-connecting with our body, mind and spirit. It is one of the most effective systems for achieving happiness in every aspect of human life. Does our society today support the exploration of truth, purpose and peace of mind? Only if you seek out conscious communities that are ready to step back and be present in the beauty of the world that surrounds us. Recommendation: Seek out environments that intentionally honor our carbon footprint on this earth and support healthy community gatherings. The Lotus Pond Center for Yoga and Health in Tampa is attempting to do just that. Tucked away, on 4.5 acres of land in a beautiful log cabin retreat nestled just on the edge of Carrollwood and Citrus Park, this hidden gem is lush with flowers and local plants. Home to the local community, the studio offers yoga classes and retreats, and now seeks to teach its neighbors sustainability. Lotus pond has an organic garden and is in the process of starting a “Grow Your Own Food and Flourish” gardening program. For the Thanksgiving Holidays a free “Mindfulness Eating and Cooking” program was offered to the community by Curtis Whitwam from Whole Foods and psychologist Diego Hernandez. On Thanksgiving Day, Val Spies and Florida Orchestra Cello player, Laura Smith, provided a donation only thankful awareness class for students. The Lotus Pond is also launching a Go-Green Bike Program to encourage students to ride their bikes to class. Students who ride their bikes to the studio five times will receive $5 off their next class card purchase. So when you are ready to turn off your cell phone, set aside your ipad; ride or walk into the beautiful grounds of the Lotus Pond Center, take a yoga class and allow a little extra time for lounging on the big porches or doing a little gardening. ● www.tampabaywellness.com
