I was going to another salon, but I felt they were just shipping me in and out. But, not at Skin Savvy. Toni take her time with you. It’s not just a science with her, it’s artistry. She makes me look refreshed and natural looking, not “plasticky.”

Immune Boosting Myers’ Cocktail L

ifeWorks Wellness Center in Clearwater, a clinic renowned for its range of alternative therapies, offers an immune boosting Myers’ cocktail as a safe, natural way to prepare for the flu season. With Fall almost upon us, many people are already thinking about cold and flu prevention. Some people elect to have a flu shot but its effectiveness relies on scientists correctly predicting the strain of flu virus that will be in circulation that year and matching it with the virus strain in the vaccine. When the match is not correct, the vaccine is ineffective, and sometimes people can get reactions to the vaccine that make them ill. The Myers’ cocktail contains essential B vitamins, vitamin C, calcium and magnesium with

homeopathic immune boosting remedies that help to activate the immune system. This way the body has its natural immunity enhanced and it can ward off infectious insults and keep itself healthy during the coming winter. During the month of September, LifeWorks is offering an offer on the immune boosting IV – a special price of $60, representing a saving of $15. Offer expires September 28, 2012. So don’t let the flu interrupt your daily life. Call 727 466 6789 for more information or an appointment or visit www.lifeworkswellnesscenter.com. LifeWorks is located at 301Turner Street, Clearwater, FL. See ad on page 15.

Striving to live a healthier life and heal her skin, she began using organic color, and soon after opened Stasia’s Organic Element Salon.

“It is our mission to find the healthiest products available. Products that are still effective and make your hair look and feel its best. Many people are becoming more aware of the side effects caused by conventional color and the safer and more natural options and alternatives that are now available.” – Stacy Long. camp in which recruits either “break” or “make” it, a training period for military recruits, an experience of pain without pleasure—all these descriptions may evoke “boot camp.” But what about “fitness boot camp?” A military boot camp takeoff for skinny twenty-something-year-old girls—does this description fit the bill? Boot camps don’t strictly shape up military recruits anymore, actually, since fitness boot camps primarily target civilians. John Kent leads the Adventure Boot Camps for women of all ages, from all walks of life, and in all stages of fitness. He combines a background in entertainment with education as a Certified Personal Trainer to provide a fun and informative program for women who need encouragement and guidance to reach their nutrition and fitness goals. John has written articles for multiple publications. Fox 13’s Good Day Tampa Bay (Charley Belcher’s World), Bay News 9, and Channel 10’s Life Around the Bay have featured his expertise as well. And Tampa Bay’s Best Magazine previously named John “Tampa Bay’s Body Transformer.” So what is John’s secret? John uses neuroassociation to help women associate healthy eating and exercise with pleasure. Credible experts in many fields have validated the usefulness of approaching human behavior from a neuroscientific perspective. For example, a dialogue between neuroscientist Antonio Damasio and author Siri Hustvedt, published in the December 2010 issue of Discover Magazine, explores the connection between human behavior and emotion. According to Hustvedt, “our brains and memories are

not like recording devices, not like film, and that is why we can sometimes make significant errors. Those errors can be created by the emotions attached to the experience.” In his foreword to Joel Fuhrman M.D.’s medically groundbreaking book Eat to Live, Mehmet Oz M.D.—a cardiothoracic surgeon, best-selling author, television personality, and university professor—points out that the American public, rich and poor, is drawn to eating unhealthy food, even though high-quality nutrition is readily available throughout the United States (xvii). The quantity of information we receive about the dangers of a sedentary lifestyle and a poor diet does not usually change the quality of our health-related choices and habits, Oz explains (xvii). Charles Duhigg—an investigative reporter whose awards include the Scripps Howard National Journalism Award, the Investigative Reporters and Editors’ Medal, and the National Academies’ reporting award—has also explored the significance of human habits. Duhigg, author of The Power of Habit, covered the Iraq War in 2000. An army major in Kufa— www.tampabaywellness.com

a town approximately 90 miles south of Baghdad—had been analyzing videotapes of riots, and Duhigg’s conversations with the army major sparked Duhigg’s further interest in habits. According to Duhigg, the army major described the U.S. military as one of the biggest habit formation experiments in history (Charlesduhigg.com). John does not analyze riots for the U.S. military, but he attends other successful fitness boot camps around the country to gather and adapt information for his Adventure Boot Camps. Like in military boot camps, the training in John’s camps takes place outside. Unlike in military boot camps, however, John’s boot camps offer fitness recruits a choice of when they would like to train – 5:30 AM, 9 AM, or 7 PM. Groups meet three or five days a week for three weeks to fully form and instill new, pleasurable habits. John Kent’s success with Adventure Boot Camp shows that training the mind helps reshape the body and alter the habits that shape the direction of our lives. Tampa Bay Wellness Magazine (TBW): What do you think is the biggest miscon-

ception that people have about fitness boot camps? John Kent: They always think that it’s going to be a bunch of young girls in their twenties and that everybody is going to be really, really fit. And it’s not true. We have ladies of all fitness levels – some ladies that have never exercised, some ladies that have not exercised in 20 years, some ladies that have just had maybe their second child or just had a baby, some ladies that have gotten everything else together (their family and their career), and they have kept putting off this one area of their life. So although they’re successful in other areas, they haven’t been able to master this one area. It has continuously gotten the better of them. Now is just their time to pay attention to themselves. They’re caretakers. They take care of everybody—everybody else. They’re realizing that they’re getting older and that this is now becoming a priority. And it needs to be; it needs to change the direction of their lives, or the road doesn’t look as bright. TBW: Why do you think people consciously or un-

consciously overlook the fact that nutrition and fitness really do go hand in hand? John: I think because they don’t understand that you can’t out-train a bad diet. If losing weight, being leaner firmer and healthier, and performing better are your goals, you can’t overlook the fuel that you put into your body. TBW: Could you explain the nutritional aspects of Adventure Boot Camp and how these help to transform women? John: The “Welcome to the Transformation” nutrition seminar is where we introduce the ten habits. And we get them to pick their one habit that they’re going to be working on for the next two weeks . . . We go over what to do, and we go over our strategic plan. The Supermarket Tour is where we go over how to do that. So the nutritional seminar is what to do, and the supermarket tour is how to do it. And there’s really a big difference there. And there’s a gap there sometimes, because you can sit in the seminar and it can seem all cool. But when Continued on page 14 Tampa Bay Wellness • September 2012 13

The Pleasure Principle: you get into the place (and we do it at Publix), now you’re familiar with where the decisions are made, and it increases the success rate dramatically. TBW: Could give an example of one part of the Supermarket Tour? For example, do you show participants how to go perimeter shopping?

So then when it’s time to make a salad or an omelet . . . then, their vegetables are already prepped. They just open up the see-through containers instead of grabbing all the bags, pulling them out one at a time, chopping up just enough for that serving, and then putting them back in the bag.

An Interview with John Kent

in, and they have a really good time. They have fun; they get social interaction. We’re having fun. We joke. There are games. There are fun things to do that are different than what’s in their world. And so they train; they have a good time. Train; have fun . . . So we have these fun chemicals that are going off in the brain while training.

like pleasure. People don’t like pain. If they’re always associating training or getting in shape with pain, their chances of success are in the 98% failure rate. That’s why they fail—because it’s not fun, it’s not cool, it’s not exciting. But if we can change that into “This is the best hour in my day,” now we have unlimited possibility.

TBW: So that builds a positive association?

TBW: Are there activities or exercises that are a part of every class or camp?

So we go over strategy. John: Perimeter shopping is really good. But we go over some strategies in the supermarket tour, like when you get your vegetables. What I get them to do is to wash them all immediately when they [participants] come into their home. The groceries are not put away until they’ve washed all of their vegetables. And then they take half of them and they chop them up immediately and put them in see-through containers.

TBW: Is there anything you can tell us (if it’s not a secret) about the Amazing Race or Blanket Junkyard activities? These sound like fun activities that participants can experience in fitness boot camp sessions. John: I have an entertainment background. We live in an entertainment-based society. What I’m trying to do in camp is called a neuroassociation. . . They [the participant] come

John: Yes: train, have fun; train, have fun; train have a good time; train have fun. “That was fun. That was cool! I like to train.” And once we can associate “I like to train” with training, now we have real a possibility for changing the trajectory of their lives, because people like to do things they like to do. . . People

John: Every camp is different. There are not exercises that are part of every class. But there are types of exercises. We always have a dynamic warm up. We always have some resistance training. We always have probably some interval, balance, and flexibility training. We always have core work in there. But they’ll be different each time. So we’ll have types of exercises . . . but the actual exercises will always be different. TBW: How did you go about creating the exercise activities for boot camp? John: What I do probably three times a year is go to other top boot camps around the country. When I go there I get to see what other people are doing. And I’ve been in the fitness industry so long that when I go and I see something that’s cool, I automatically in my mind come up with 10 derivatives.

TBW: What did you find most challenging or rewarding about the education you received? John: What I really found is . . . that we are creatures of habit. We are made up of these invisible rituals. Most are just there by default. We haven’t really thought about them. They aren’t really anything that’s planned; they’re just there by default. But they’re invisible. . . In boot camp we have 10 habits. . . If you develop these 10 habits, they’ll make you look, feel, and perform great— not just physically but mentally.

to be a real permanent change and really change the trajectory and the destiny of that person. And that’s what it’s really about. That’s what’s rewarding. And that’s what’s cool: taking someone that’s on this unhealthy path, giving them new vision, new hope, new ideas, and new strategies that permanently change the trajectory of the path they’re on. That’s awesome. That’s cool. To learn more about John Kent and Adventure Boot Camps, visit www.bootcamprocks.com/ References

By John Kent North Pinellas Adventure Boot Camp for Women

The Road of Good Intentions Can Still Lead To Failure

I

’d like you to meet Susan. Susan is 48 years old and is carrying around a few extra pounds. Well, really what started out as a few extra pounds a couple of years ago has now turned into about 30 extra pounds. But it’s not like she hasn’t tried to get the weight off. It first started when she had a summer cruise coming up and she wanted to look her best in her sundress and swimsuit. So she went on a really strict no-fat diet and was able to lose the 7-10 extra pounds she was carrying. (She didn’t feel satisfied eating that way, but stuck to it because she felt the results were going to be worth it.) But when she got back from her cruise, and of course while she was on the cruise, she went right back to her old habits and quickly regained those pounds plus a few more. Then it was motherhood, where she seemed to gain and keep a few more pounds after each pregnancy. And this too led Susan down a similar path, but this time she did the Atkins diet. And, she finally felt she had found her answer when she lost a rapid amount of weight in the first week or two and a moderate amount thereafter. Success! Finally. Well, until she decide that she couldn’t swear off carbs forever. I mean...how would she celebrate her daughter’s birthday if she couldn’t have cake? EVER? After years of yo-yo dieting and experiencing some success along the way but never being able to “stick to it”, Susan has found herself about 30 pounds

overweight, depressed, anxious, lonely and feels like “something’s missing from her life”. So this New Years for 2012, she’s decided that she’s finally going to do it “once and for all”. And, for sure, her motivation level is at a all-time high. She’s committed to a really strict diet, no carbs, no sugar, no fat, only lean meats and vegetables. She’s got her exercise plan all mapped out complete with resistance training and high intensity interval training (HIIT), because that’s what all the experts have told her is the absolute no-fail plan for fat loss. But sadly, the road of good intentions can still lead to failure. And, Susan (like many others in this same situation) will fail and will likely find herself next year trying to muster up the will power and commitment she needs to “really make it happen this year.” But for them it will be like Yogi Bear says, “It’s like déjà vu all over again.” Why you ask? Because most people are focused on outcome goals (i.e. I want to lose 50 pounds or 35 or 20, 17, 5 whatever.) They get really focused and hype themselves up. They start their diet. They exercise like a mad person. They are going to give it everything they’ve got starting on New Years day! They look at the scale every day, sometimes a few times a day. They continue with their Herculean effort. After a few days or a week they hop on the scale and they see very little change or no change at all. Or worse, the number on the scale goes up! Disappointment sets in and it is continued on page 17 www.tampabaywellness.com

vital body

The Road of Good Intentions Can Still Lead To Failure not long before they give up and feel defeated, again. This may sound like you. And, if it does, your are certainly not alone. For you to succeed you need to make the distinction between outcome goals and process goals. Let me explain...

your next goal then this goal is not right for you. Pick another one that you are sure you can achieve. Don’t move to the next until you have achieved that behavioral change with a 80-90% success rate. This process is the foundation for your long term success.

A real secret to success that we can learn from professional athletes is to focus on “process” goals rather than “outcome” goals.

Do this process and I guarantee that you will turn into the lean, energetic, sexy confident women you know you are.

Like these: “I will trainer 3 times a week.”

The key is to focus on the small things that you can control and the big things will take care of themselves! Consistency is the path to your outcome goal (i.e. lose 10 pounds, 30 pounds, etc.).

“I will take my vitamins and omega 3’s every day.” “I will drink a half gallon of water every day.” “I will cut out all soda.” But perhaps the biggest key to your success and is a proven way to succeed long term (not just for the cruise or the wedding, etc.) is to pick one or two of the habits that you are extremely confident that you can do and know you should do and focus on only them. (Plus, you’ll also feel like a winner in the short term too.) Just one or two habits...that’s it. You need to feel like, “No problem, for sure, I can do this!” Execute this “process“ goal for two weeks until it becomes a habit. Track it by putting an “X” on your calendar every day when you successfully executed your 1 or 2 goals. Make sure you have 80-90% consistency or greater before you move on to the next goal. Then congratulate yourself. You have been promoted! Now, pick your next 1 or 2 goals that you feel absolutely confident you can achieve. If you are not absolutely sure you can achieve www.tampabaywellness.com

And successfully building “goal supporting habits” will be able to take over when your motivation wanes. Because no one can stay 100% focused all of the time. If you choose exercise as one of your process goals you’re going to focus on, you may want to register for our next camp that starts Jan. 9th. You can do this! I am cheering for you. fresh food

By Dina Hansen and confusion. We read labels looking for the numbers that are supposed to be most beneficial to us and tend to over look the actual ingredients. And when we do read the ingredients, many times we have no idea what they are exactly, so we hold our breath and hope for the best. Yet in both cases we have a certain criteria or set of rules, in each scenario that the food we are looking at must meet before we buy it. And when we go to restaurants, we may have slightly different rules. Bottom line is our rules around eating end up getting in the way of actually enjoying our food. Actually finding pleasure and joy from this natural, social comforting and even instinctual, relationship we have.

What Are Your Rules in Life?

W

e all seem to have these unwritten rules in our lives that we live our life by. And for many of us, when we see someone else not living their life according to the same rules, we often wonder why it is that this other person gets to do XYZ and we don’t. Why is it that they get to have____ and we don’t? It can feel so unfair! Yet these rules came into our lives for a reason at one point. Maybe they formed out of necessity because you felt you needed protection of some sort or maybe they

evolved over time, as you became more consciously educated about a particular area. One of the areas many of us have some of the strictest rules is with our food. We get so much “up to date” nutrition information from a variety of media sources every day, that we tend to forget that eating used to be a very instinctual process. We would grow the plants we could on our land, trade what we couldn’t with a neighbor and eat what was local, organic (there weren’t chemical pesticides back then) and what felt both energizing & enriching.

But it seems to have gotten much more complicated as science has gotten involved. And there are many good things science has done for us in the area of nutrition too, but I for right now, I only want to focus on the rules that we create and live by, that seem to be creating stress & anxiety for us (knowingly or unknowingly), so we’ll talk about the benefits science has brought us at another point. Let’s get back to you and your rules. For many of us the rules we have about food seem to create so much guilt, stress, tension

Food is life. Food is so much more than a bunch of nutrients we put on our plates or a resource of fuel for the body. It’s our connection to family, friends, good memories, comfort, and yes, home. Why else would so many of us choose to eat what we eat when we “go off” a strict diet plan? We are looking for the comfort we’re not finding in the current diet plan to fill a void we may be feeling on some level physically, mentally, emotionally or spiritually. Through out history we have chosen our foods based on visual appearance, smell, texture and taste.

It’s ingrained in us to do so. Have you ever found yourself sniffing the fruit at your local grocery store to see if it was ripe? Squeezing a melon? What would you do if you were served a piece of meat and thought something was wrong? Don’t you examine it with your eyes, sniff it and use your senses, as well as you instinct to determine if it’s safe to eat? This is one of the reasons our senses are so instrumental in selecting our food. It must fit a basic rule that we all adhere to: it must be appeal to our senses before we eat it, and enjoy it to receive the most benefit from it. However, for those of us who are choosing our foods based on cognitive rules where so much math is involved, I may have some bad news. For all of your best intentions, It’s been proven to take away from your body’s ability to most effectively digest your food and metabolize it, especially

www.tampabaywellness.com

if those rules are a stressor for you. Stress turns off your body’s digestion and leaves only one of two options available for the food you just ate: either eliminate it or store it as fat. Those strict rules you may be following every day could be the reason you can’t seem to maintain your healthy weight. They could be the reason you have brain fog, fatigue and experience mood swings. They could be directly linked to all of those negative things you mentally say to yourself every day that strip you of your confidence and motivation to be the person you dream of being. My suggestion is to take a “food vacation” for one week simply trust yourself to make the most nourishing choices for you based on your senses and gut instinct. I have a friend who did this with her daughter who was 7.

She gave her free range to eat anything in the house whenever she wanted it. Just like you, her daughter had been educated on all the “right” things to eat. And one would expect her to go crazy and indulge, just like you may be afraid you would in the same scenario. And yes, in the first day she indulged in all the foods that are usually treats for her. Yet after she ate her fill, she naturally started gravitating towards the very healthy menu she eats when my friend has her eye on her. The very menu her mother knows enables her daughter to thrive. Our natural inclination is to nourish ourselves and create balance in our body (otherwise known as homeostasis). Why do we spend so much time fighting it? We really have little need for such strict rules. Take a weeks vacation. The need for rules in

every area of your life may have served you at some point, but what as you evolve, wouldn’t your need for those rules change too? I’d love to hear from you. the mind

By Laura Delle Donne-Schmidt, LMHC, CHt.

A Relaxed Mind Can Create a Healthier Body!

W

oody Allen is a famous director, writer and screen actor who in the late 1960’s and early 70’s became famous for the “stressed and neurotic personality type” who’s movie character always sought therapy to try to enhance their quality of life. Thankfully for me, as I am in the field, he made seeing a “shrink” as popular as being seen at Studio 54; “the en vogue” thing to do for people in the know!” What Mr. Allen may or may not have been aware of then is that de-stressing the mind can have a direct effect on your health and wellbeing! By now it is widely known that stress in the body can cause disease. There were numerous studies that corroborated these facts. So mainstream is this view you can actually watch a documentary currently being aired on Netflix entitled Stress and the Brain. Robert Sapolsky (a neuroendocrinologist at Stanford University, Ca.) monitored stress levels utilizing the hierarchical structure in the African baboon population and found that when mammals are stressed it directly correlates to an increase in heart rate, blood pressure, secretion of stress hormones and that these factors directly related to their overall health. Furthermore, Sir Michael Marmot (University College Medical School, London) expanded on these studies and followed 28,000 people

over 40 yrs regarding social structure and stress in the British Civil Services known as the Whitehall studies. He also concluded through such variables as rank and job stress that stress directly effected length of life and undermines health. Pretty amazing findings considering stress is Subjective; meaning how the mind views events in one’s life is individual. But, stressors are universal as well. People can experience similarities with in their perceptions of reality as well as vast differences. This is why some people will get sick and others do not after being exposed to common variables. The amount of stress perceived or currently being experienced can effect how the immune system works. Hence, the mind- body genre that includes names like Deepak Chopra, coined the phrase: “Dis-Ease causes disease”. Interestingly, writing this article actually jarred a memory of mine regarding a behavioral experiment that I had witnessed at my Alma Mater being conducted on rats by the psyche department over 30 yrs ago. They gave intermittent shocks to rats to see the effects of stress on their system; they grew tumors on their bodies. I remember feeling sorry for them as I watched them shake uncontrollably in their boxes with anticipa-

tory anxiety and now having been conditioned to expect but not know when the next inevitable shock wave would happen. Oddly, it was difficult to find studies to prove that de-stressing the mind utilizing psychotherapy techniques was a direct causal factor regarding the enhancement to a person’s immune system and increased to their overall health. But, there were many studies suggesting great benefits. My guess is too many variables, especially since the view of what causes someone stress is unique to the individual. So, I decided to go directly to the source and spoke to 2 women who are survivors of breast cancer to see how some people under extraordinary circumstances had dealt with their recovery process and if or why someone should seek counseling to enhance their healing. First I spoke to Peggy Sherry who is the founder and director of the Faces of Courage Foundation (FOC) that “provides day and overnight camps for women and children dealing with any cancer type” and who is a 2x survivor of breast cancer herself. Peggy talked about the low incidence of survivors seeking psychotherapy because they are forced to immediately “go into survivor mode to get through the fear that goes along with being diagnosed

then dealing with the treatments and their side effects”. For many this can be a long and grueling process. Afterwards, they understandably “just want to forget, go forward and get back to their lives”. However, everyone deals differently with their lives as we know but the ones who do get support, change their outlook on their life in general, begin to process things differently than before and are willing to do so for their own self growth find they are “healthier” afterwards. For instance, she reports “we see a lot of change in survivors after they have a brush with death, they may take a look at their life, relationships and stressors and then those who made changes view a significant survivor benefit and enhancement to their quality of life as a whole. The experience at camp is one spoke on the healing wheel,

it gives survivors a break from dealing with their disease and provides a community with similar life experiences, an opportunity to share information and have some fun. Peggie’s camp motto is “Cancer is Serious and Camp is Serious Fun!” Another avenue for healing was experienced by Miriam Zimm. Miriam is a breast cancer “Champion” of a rare type called Triple Negative and who’s mother also had been diagnosed but did not survive. She designed for herself an adjunct healing protocol in addition to her medical protocols; she felt she had to “amp up her care”. This entailed sessions of individual psychotherapy, yoga, swimming, pilates, took herbal supplements, attended the women’s FOC camp, and is writing a book of her experience in hopes to help others. Miriam said that she decided to step up her program

and “took charge of what was going to happen with her body”. Of great benefit was her individual therapy sessions that allowed her to focus on self and help her manage her life and create a feeling of “taking back control of your life during a time when you feel out of control”. She further states that “you still have to take care of not only the crisis of being diagnosed but still have to manage relationships, your family and professional life. These things still happen regardless and it helps to set time aside for you so can manage your whole life”. After clearing stressors past and present, and dealing with core issues in my life, “therapy then kept me present of what was going on today.” Today Miriam is healthy and is excited about trying to have a baby. It is clear that taking time for you and doing those things to escape the “rat race” has

great benefit to your overall health. Do it for yourself, do it for your immune system! Make that appointment for a massage, enroll in a meditation class, exercise, start a new hobby and seek a trained / licensed therapist to help you achieve a greater sense of peace and balance to your world! ur world and we are all changing in ways that we have a hard time comprehending at this time.

Some say it is the sun, others say it is the astrological influences impelling us toward a higher vibration. Every structure in every way, from our DNA to the world’s civilizational norms are crumbling and preparing for a time of newness and transcendence of the old. We see our financial institutions worldwide in disarray, and in many parts of the world people are waking up and realizing that spiritual values such as that of respect and boundaries, are paramount and they are demanding higher and more democratic and fair treatment. The Arab Spring is not a monolithic movement, but all across the Middle East we see the spirit of the times, change, occurring. The old is struggling to maintain its ego hold and the light is beginning to shine evermore strongly. Individually we are all feeling the influences and movements within our very physical being. Our DNA is being affected but more than that, we are learning spiritual lessons far beyond anytime and place in our lives and in truth, that of our universe. So what does this mean? What are we to do? How are we to cope, learn and grow? Change and progress means we have to move out of our fossilized beliefs and actions and be open to examination of those aspects. In short, we are being pushed to look into the mirror and see the reflection of what is, with the aim of becoming that which we wish. Endemically, we all want to make this earth experience one of learning 22 September 2012 • Tampa Bay Wellness

and growing. In order to do that we must compare ourselves to the highest spiritual standards and be fully aware that there is a higher purpose in all that we experience. The ancients knew that there were cycles, and in these cycles, there are spiraling energies and times which lead to higher outcomes. In fact, each spiral is upward and while many times generational, that is, taking generations, we have become more and more aware and attained a higher consciousness. What are we to do? We must somehow learn to embrace change and have the faith that all really is going in accordance to the Divine plan. These times may test us, but we all have the choice to succeed in learning valuable lessons on all levels…and apply them in treating others as we would like to be treated. But we have to begin at home with the desire to examine and purge that which really no longer serves us. How? Look at those life aspects that do not work in our lives and dedicate time and energy to learning how to apply new thoughts and ways…even if it is initially uncomfortable. A person who becomes that which they wish to be, is operating at a higher consciousness and creates a reality that is powerful, joyful and loving. Ultimately, this life, through change and lessons teaches us the lesson of love. As it was once said, the only final examination we have is to be able to say how much we have learned about love and how we applied it. But what does that mean? It means that we accept that we are human, and that we are simply learning more and more

about ourselves. We love ourselves, and others, through acceptance, compassion, empathy and being the nicest, loving person we can in all moments- whether those moments are trying or blissful, the idea is to unconditionally apply our highest spiritual consciousness to all things and places at all times. This is easy to say and possibly conceptualize, but in most realities we feel that this is difficult to truly do on our own. Guess what, we do not have to do anything on our own. All we have to do is realize that we are surrounded by and are one with an incredible energy of unconditional love. Whatever your concept of God/Goddess/All That Is, the ultimate truth of this presence is an energy of total and complete love. All we have to do is acknowledge this field and know that no matter what, all is OK. Simply letting that field be your mainstay, means that as we go through this illusion called reality, All That Is, is right there with you, closer than your breath, and that you really are a spark of divinity- then as change comes and go, we can joyfully forge ahead and enjoy life! age! a wonderful time to

W

e are fortunate that there are so many wonderful treatments available now to treat the effects of aging. Unfortunately, the people seeking these treatments have to deal with much confusion, and most times, misconceptions about the treatments they are seeking. As a patient, it is a nerve racking experience to sit in a chair for the first time, handing over hard earned money, as well as personal control and trust, in someone you don’t know anything about their training or experience level, for a procedure you also know little about.

24 September 2012 • Tampa Bay Wellness

So my patients put their concerns in basic terms that they know I will understand, such as “I don’t want to look like a duck or a dog”. Since that’s the last thing I want as well, we discuss not only the considerations of what treatment they may be seeking, but also what the realistic outcomes will be. While our faces are all different, there are basic aging principles that apply to all of us – muscle motion, weight changes, and genetic predisposition, all of which influences our loss of facial volume or fullness. The cheekbones serve as an upper support for the skin that drapes below. The upper jaw helps to support the skin that drapes beneath it. In the middle, is the “sub malar” area, just below the cheekbone. When this area loses volume there is atrophy, or a look of ‘hollowness’ in the face.

www.tampabaywellness.com

The mouth has a circular muscle surrounding it that enables talking, eating, kissing, and laughing. That’s a lot of function for one muscle group and it’s the reason why the first signs of aging are frequently around the mouth. Loss of lip volume, vertical lip creases, and deepened smile lines are what usually drive us to seek treatment for the first time. Specifically dealing with dermal fillers, problems occur when the natural anatomy is not examined and filler is injected “textbook” style instead of tailoring the treatment to your unique anatomy. A poor result happens when filler is forced into an area that didn’t have significant volume in the first place. Lips that were never full cannot suddenly become full when we are older. If there was no space for genetically determined volume to be present, the tissue will stretch in an unnatural way to accommodate the filler. The over-everted, stretched look is known as “duck lips”. This “over the top” look is exaggerated when the volume loss under the cheekbone is not treated. When you have too much fullness or overcorrection in the lower face, and a hollowed depression in the mid face, it is known as the “muzzle effect”. All of these, obviously, are undesirable outcomes, and can be avoided most times with the proper examination and tailoring of the treatment plan. For the most natural result, the natural anatomy of the entire face should be evaluated and balance restored. The transition from one plane of tissue to the next should be smooth in the entire face, and sometimes this can only be accomplished by www.tampabaywellness.com

placing filler in the cheekbone, or just below, providing a lifting effect for the lower face. (imagine raising a tent). Variations of this procedure are known as the “Filler Facelift”. Fillers are certainly an expense, especially if additional syringes are needed to achieve the desired goals. However, these types of products are meant to last longer than some other forms of treatments, and should be considered as part of your lifestyle, much like eating healthier and exercise. There is no worse emotional expense than a poor result, and as more than one patient has told me of previous treatments with poor outcomes: “I feel like a fool”. It is really a wonderful time to age! Look at your own face in the mirror with an artistic eye and make a list of questions and concerns about how your face is aging. Hold your practitioner accountable to educate you. Check credentials and get referrals. And, when you have a great result and get those compliments, share with your friends. Believe me, they’ll know it’s not all genetics and you’ll look even more beautiful for sharing! ● Toni Fravega Sloman ARNP, MSN is the founder and owner of Skin Savvy. Plum Socca Tart with Rosemary Ingredients

~Dairy-free, gluten-free, grainfree, vegan, nut-free, corn-free, soy-free, and, of course, sugar-free! Ingredients 1/2 cup chickpea flour 1/2 cup water 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon coconut oil (olive oil would work fine, too) 4 plums

1 teaspoon rosemary, dried or fresh Preheat oven to 425*. Mix together the chickpea flour, salt, and water in a small bowl. Batter will be thin. Spread the oil on a 10-12 inch round pan and then pour the batter in the pan. Bake for 5-10 minutes or until the socca is slightly set but still soft on top. In the meantime, thinly slice the plums. Take the socca out of the oven and layer the plums

on top of the socca in a circular formation (or just throw ‘em on top if you don’t care about the look!). Sprinkle with rosemary and place back in oven. Bake for another ten minutes or until the socca’s edges are brown and crispy and the plums are soft.

Heart Attacks

• High blood cholesterol • High blood pressure • Physical inactivity • Obesity or overweight • Diabetes • Use of estrogens • Excessive alcohol use Added to which, if you have a family history of heart disease, or you have already had a heart attack, you are at even greater risk. But, even if you don’t consider yourself high-risk, which the majority of heart attack victims don’t, why let 911 be your wake-up call?

Are You Going To Wait Until It’s Too Late?....

Take Heart Looking on the preventative side, what can you do to maintain a healthy heart? You probably already know what steps you can take like stop smoking, eat a healthy diet with lots of fresh organic fruit and vegetables, get plenty of regular exercise, keep your weight under control along with your blood pressure and blood cholesterol. Bypass heart surgery is one treatment for heart disease, but at times, it can be ineffective, and costly, not to mention risky. During bypass surgery, about 5 percent of patients have cardiac arrests or strokes and about 1-2 percent actually die. Your Heart in Our Hands

Did you know: • Seventy million people in the USA have heart disease? • Heart disease is the #1 killer of women in the US? • Deaths from cancer in the USA are half as common as death from cardiovascular disease? What’s more astounding is

that 50 percent of men and 64 percent of women who die from heart disease experience no previous symptoms of it. Most people are running at full speed throughout their days, balancing a full-time job with raising children, running a home and making ends meet, financially. Often warning signs of heart disease are ignored, until “bad indigestion” is eventually diagnosed as cardiovascular disease.

30 September 2012 • Tampa Bay Wellness

Heartbroken Many ask, “What is a heart attack?” Simply, a heart attack is damage to the heart muscle due to loss of blood supply, usually caused by a complete blockage of an artery that supplies blood to the heart muscle. Several risk factors have been isolated and they are: • Tobacco smoke

At LifeWorks Wellness Center we specialize in evaluating heart health, both in terms of prevention of, and natural treatment for, cardiovascular disease. We have three different protocols which we use in the prevention of, and treatment for, cardiovascular disease: Chelation - at LifeWorks, chelation therapy is used as the primary treatment of heavy metal www.tampabaywellness.com

poisoning. Because chelation appears to improve circulation and reduce toxic chemical reactions in the body, it has been used successfully in patients who have heart conditions. Enhanced external counterpulsation (EECP) - offers a safe, non-invasive, painless treatment that maximises oxygenand nutrient-rich blood flow throughout the body which in turn improves stamina, strength, mobility and vitality. Many patients suffer from conditions such as chest pain, fatigue and shortness of breath. EECP Therapy promotes the development of new blood vessels and restores the flow of healthy, oxygenated blood to the heart. Oxidative Medicine – Oxygen therapies can have a tremendous

healing effect on the body. Using hydrogen peroxide, or ozone we can saturate the bloodstream with oxygen that will kill bacteria, fungi and viral infections. In the case of cardiovascular disease, the blood flow seems to improve and patients can be relieved of their symptoms. At LifeWorks we have helped many patients with advice about cardiovascular prevention and treatment and we could do the same for you. Emotional Freedom Technique E

motional Freedom Technique (“EFT”) works with the energy system of the body. It can produce miraculous results in the area of emotional healing, specifically anxiety, fear, worry and panic attacks. EFT often works when nothing else will. EFT is not a faith healing. It works whether you believe it will or not. You simply tap on energy centers similar to where acupuncturists put their needles. With EFT there are no pills, no needles, no surgical procedures,

and no side effects. Best of all, you can do it yourself, anywhere. So give it a try the next time you are in need of a mood shift. It can relieve just about every emotional condition under the sun and many physical conditions as well. Some physical conditions are actually caused by the emotions. Even if a pain or ailment starts out as a purely mechanical, physical condition, you may find yourself feeling anxious about the condition and that brings even more pain.

horoscopes ARIES LETTING GO-Something has fulfilled its time and may be no longer necessary. As you go through this month it will become clear. Take action now that lends itself to renewal. On the other hand, someone or something can resurface that you once though gone. Be at peace.

LEO DISCIPLINE…in order to accomplish certain tasks as well as see more clearly certain situations in which there may be currently an element of projection. It is time to perhaps lower and old flag and raise a new one. It may be time for evaluation and a bit of renovation as you let go of old allegiances and standards and take up new ones. Beware of pretending to be someone you are not. It then becomes only the blind leading the blind.

SAGITTARIUS A TURN…for the better can be upon you. Lift yourself above the ordinary, human-centred views and find a new perspective. Get out the “dead wood” from within your life and review the past, using this information to clear the channels that are perhaps confusing you. Wait until you receive clarity before proceeding. Watch both words and deeds. The thing about truth is that it tends to be ageless.

By Imsara

TAURUS GESTATION… is brewing within. Might there be some kind of project or enterprise afoot? This is good news. Inner strength may be put to the test but you can learn a lot. Throw a little caution to the winds and allow the liberation to begin. Staying static serves no one. Clear the air where need be!

VIRGO PROTECTION…given in order to prepare for a new phase in your life. Conserve your assets and seek to find ways you can make yourself more self-sufficient over the coming year. Seek to connect more with nature, look into gardening and other forms of skill building that are of a practical yet nurturing nature. Loosen some of the inhibitions you have led your life by.

CAPRICORN

DISSOLUTION …more breaking down of structure is at hand. Don’t be too concerned with only one side of the issues that face you now. Simply look around, weigh the pros and cons and move into the demolition. You are never trapped and if you need a bigger room, just call cosmic room service. The answers you may find can be illuminating.

Imsara is an evolutionary astrologist, acupuncture physician, writer and speaker. She holds a Doctor of Oriental Medicine and a Master’s in Public Health. Imsara is offering a www.tampabaywellness.com

GEMINI JOURNEY…you may remember the past more for the purpose of applying it to your present needs and creativity. Wisdom will be emerging and not a moment too soon. Take heed of your inner stirrings. Pay attention to details and respect the passing of time. Your efforts can be recognized in ways that can surprise you. Hunker down and focus.

LIBRA GATEWAY…to manifestation is evident. Spend time establishing a deeper level of order and harmony within your life. Consider expanding more within your environment in order to enjoy nature, its beauty and its healing effects. Take the time to listen more to others while you also focus on presentation of both your personal and professional best!

AQUARIUS CHANGES…sorrow, loss and yearning are emotions that are universal in their scope. Barriers or defences around your heart can be keeping needed elements, such as love and relationships that satisfy, from getting in. Understand that one of the key strengths within your sign is that of authenticity in feelings. They are your saving grace. It is time to unlock the heart more and move deeper into its abundant life. series of exciting new classes both in St. Petersburg and at Om Gaia in Bradenton, Florida. Imsara also offers a unique set of services both in Oriental Medicine and energy

CANCER VICTORY…at the successful completion of a cycle. Moving into your new birth year, deepen ways you can test your mettle and skills. The outer aspects of a situation are masking a deeper truth that you need to see. It is also important to know your limitations—what you can and cannot do. Accommodate your changing needs by bringing in new perceptions and examining your values and beliefs—particularly about relationships.

SCORPIO DAWN…is the keynote as you prepare for a journey of deeper transformation over the coming 2 to 3 years. You may find yourself trying to heal the gap between others or within yourself. It will be important to trust your radar, deepen your perceptions, have trust and openness and communicate to one or two others what you are feeling. You are bringing up new elements deep within your inner self that can gradually transmute into diamond light.

PISCES SWEET REJUVENATION… and not a moment too soon. Ill will, news or gossip lately may have got you down. Or, you may be trying to improve your health, your energy and sense of vitality. Seek to understand rather than be understood. Take a short trip, nap, draw, play and swim more. It is time for a good restful retreat.
