Why Pleasure and Health Are Related Just as any piece of machinery works better when it’s properly lubricated, your organs (and the rest of your body) work better when you’re thinking thoughts and feeling emotions that bring you pleasure or when you’re pursuing enjoyable activities. That’s true in several ways. First of all, experiencing pleasure improves blood flow. Healthy blood flow is important because the bloodstream brings nutrients to all of your body’s cells and carries away the cells’ waste products. It’s like stocking the fridge and emptying the garbage at the same time. All of this happens by virtue of a gas called nitric oxide. When you’re experiencing pleasure or feeling calm, vibrant, and healthy, nitric oxide is released in little puffs mostly from the lining of your blood vessels. Because it’s a gas, it diffuses rapidly in all directions—right through cell walls. It’s equivalent to e-mail blasts occurring almost instantly all over your body. Not only does this result in increased circulation, but nitric oxide also turns on the production of special chemicals in your body called neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters carry myriad messages between the brain and nervous system, helping your body work and feel better. One of the neurotransmitters that pleasure increases is called beta-endorphin, which www.tampabaywellness.com


acts sort of like morphine—it dulls pain and creates feelings of euphoria. This not only improves your mood, but it also helps you deal more effectively with the stresses of life. Another neurotransmitter that pleasure boosts is called prolactin (which is also known as the hormone of bonding). Prolactin is released when you nurse a child, have an orgasm, or even get together with good friends. It makes you feel bonded to the person (or people) you’re interacting with at the time. Prolactin supports loving feelings between mothers and their infants, women and their mates, and even between friends. Speaking of orgasm and sex, perhaps the most obvious proof that our bodies were designed for pleasure is the existence of the clitoris. This fleshy little budlike organ, which is connected to deeper erectile tissue in the pelvis, sits right above the vaginal opening, partially covered and protected by a hood of skin. Despite its small external size (it’s no bigger than a pencil eraser), it contains 8,000 nerve endings that increase sexual excitement and ultimately bring on orgasm. Although some people mistakenly assume that women urinate through this organ, thinking it does double duty like a man’s penis, this isn’t the case. Instead, women urinate from a tiny hole located between the clitoris and the vagina. The clitoris has nothing to do with urinating—or even with conception or reproduction. It’s actually the only organ in the human body whose sole purpose is pleasure. (Talk about being hardwired for good times!)

Because women often need time to become sexually aroused and climax, some feel like there’s a flaw in the system or that the design doesn’t work quite right. But exactly the opposite is true. What your body in its infinite wisdom is trying to tell you is that it’s okay to take your time! Your body was designed to take the slow route, not the fast-track shortcut. You deserve all the love and attention that it takes for you to get there. In fact, the key to experiencing more orgasmic pleasure is, ironically, learning to enjoy every stroke and sensation along the way without even thinking about the “goal” of orgasm. You reach your optimal peak of both pleasure and health not through the quick fix, but through a long-term, sustained attention to cultivating pleasure. This is as true in life as it is between the sheets.

And then you need more in order to achieve the same effect. It becomes a vicious cycle—not the best route to optimal health! In fact, that’s how addiction and disease get started. Pursuing pleasure and allowing yourself to receive it in your day-to-day life, on the other hand, produces significantly better and more longlasting results.

elcome to the Vegetable of the Month Club where every month we’ll explore the uses and benefits of a different seasonal vegetable. Organic, Vegan Chef Mary Skinner will provide tips and recipes for creating wonderful dishes with the VOM as the star ingredient. October’s vegetable is Cauliflower. This versatile and delicious vegetable, in season from October to May, can be used so many ways in vegetarian cooking to produce creamy, delicious, nutritious meals. Cauliflower, a cruciferous vegetable, is an excellent source of Folate, Vitamin C and a host of several phytochemicals, as well as Indole-3-Carbinol. Much has been written of cauliflower in its

positioning as one of the powerhouse vegetables in the prevention of cancer. Puree it with vegetable broth as a replacement for or an ingredient in mashed potatoes. Make delicious cream sauces to serve over pasta or other dishes as a nutritious gravy.Add a couple of florets to your favorite fruit smoothie. Cauliflower’s flavor is so mild, your children will never know it’s there! This holiday season, break out of the traditional canned soup casserole routine and try doing a cauliflower casserole instead! Below is a recipe for a delicious Roasted Cauliflower Leek Soup that is quick, easy and a definite crowd pleaser. A great soup for the upcoming cooler months.

Cauliflower Leek Soup Recipe by Chef Mary Skinner finedinechef@yahoo.com - 917-536-8440 1 head cauliflower cut into 1 1/2 in florets 1 large leek quartered lengthwise, rinsed well in cool water 2-3 tablespoons olive oil enough to lightly coat vegetables 4-6 cups vegetable broth 1 bay leaf 1/4 teaspoon marjoram 1/8 teaspoon smoked paprika (or sweet paprika) Pinch caraway Pinch cumin Salt and pepper to taste Optional: 2-3 cloves roasted garlic Small potato cut into small dice

Procedure 1. Lightly coat cauliflower florets and leeks (and whole peeled garlic cloves if desired) in olive oil and sprinkle www.tampabaywellness.com

lightly with salt. Place in oven on bake sheet and roast at 400° F until they begin to turn slightly golden brown. 2. While vegetables are roasting, bring vegetable broth to a simmer with the bay leaf. 3. When vegetables are ready, remove from oven and transfer into the broth. 4. Add the marjoram and let simmer for approximately 35 minutes. 5. Remove bay leaf and blend with immersion blender (or transfer to blender). 6. Once soup is smooth, add the paprika, caraway and cumin, salt and pepper to taste and return to simmer for about 10-15 more minutes. 7. If you wish to create a thicker soup, you can add a small diced raw potato to the broth at Step 2 or a small diced boiled potato before blending.

irst of all, if you start living your life “right” as early as possible, you may reduce your chance of having cancer initiated and/or progress. Cancer does not happen in a few weeks nor a few months. It is a chronic process, an abnormal growth [in a form of stagnation, mucus, phlegm, cyst, poor blood flow, etc.] in the body forming and accumulating over the years and can fully manifest into CANCER within a 10year period. Generally, it happens over a long period of time, when one allows “symptoms” to pass by and not giving proper attention to thy self, in the midst of life’s challenges/ lifestyle [balancing work, personal health, personal spiritual practice, and emergencies] and heart-aches [personal relationships with family, friends, and others]. Cancer risks increases and/or happens either because of cancer genes/family history of cancer passed down to you; or NO cancer genes/ family history of cancer passed down to you, combined bad life habits, poor relationships, exposed to toxic environment. In many cases, there are no obvious symptoms, or sometimes, symptoms are mistaken or ignored as life’s basic struggle for survival. This is why it is so important to pay attention to the health of your body and mind: when your internal organs/body is injured, hurt, or not functioning properly, seek help asap; when you are emotionally hurt, feeling depressed, anger, etc, seek help and find out how you can feel and think positive again. eclining bound Angle pose is a wonderful restorative yoga pose and I use it frequently in restorative yoga and hypnosis class at Jai Dee Yoga. I am a counselor who specializes in regulation of the emotions and stress in the body. I love this pose because it has so many wonderful benefits. Supta Baddahkonasna helps my students become aware of how tensions or pain in the body are calling for recognition and then with directed breathing this pose helps them to safely release, regulate and gain insight. For props, my students are given a sticky yoga mat, a soft cushion mat, 2 blankets, 2 pillows, a strap, and two bolsters. To get into sputa baddahkonasana lay a bolster lengthwise behind you. Underneath it prop the bolster up with another bolster so you have a slightly elevated bolster so you can lay your whole spine on top. If you do not have 2 bolsters, use folded blankets on top on the bolster to help elevate your back and neck. Place

your buttocks against the short end of the bolster, and place rolled blankets on either side of your knees. Bend your knees, join the soles of the feet together and draw your heels towards your body. Wrap the strap around your hips, buckle it loosely and pass it under both feet to stretch it over your ankles. The strap should not be too confining, and not too loose. It may not be necessary to use a strap if you have flexible hips. Place your elbows on the floor behind you and gently lower your back and head onto the bolster. Adjust yourself until you feel the bolster is comfortably supporting your back. Let your bent legs open and lay them on the rolled blankets for more support. Inner spiral and push your thighs toward your knees so your knees will descend easily. Stretch out your arms with the palms facing the ceiling, bend the elbows slightly and bring the shoulder blades together on the back and lower the shoulders. You may lay your arms on rolled blankets or pillows for even greater comfort. Breathe and open the heart, exhale tension or pain. Breathe into your hips and groin and exhale tightness. Breathe and expand the pelvic region, exhale, let go and relax. hat used to be a simple answer has now become much more encompassing. Reiki is a Japanese healing art that was synthesized into being by Dr Mikao Usui in the late 1800's in Japan. Dr Usui was a devout Buddhist, who, in his intense desire to understand and work with methods of medicine and healing, developed Reiki. "Reiki" is a Japanese word for the concept: "Universal Life Energy". Reiki's initial stages can be learned by anyone regardless of their personal philosophy and/or spiritual belief system. enerally speaking, meical intuition is the utilization of a focused, intuitive (psychic) ability to feel, sense, or "intuitively see" the energetic and frequency information in and around the human body. The talent to use these intuitive skills can often be one of the psychic abilities one has been gifted with along with other psychic or intuitive skills. However, as psychic skills can be developed, medical intuition can also be studied and developed. It can be honed through persistent practice - much like any other intuitive skill.
