Are foods making you ill?

W

e all know that severe food allergies can be lethal. But mild food allergies, often called food sensitivities, are more subtle. They can cause sinus congestion, headache, achiness, constipation, diarrhea, rash, autism and a variety of vague symptoms. There are two ways to determine whether you have a food sensitivity. One is to do an elimination diet. If, after eliminating certain foods from the diet, you feel better, then we know that something you are eating is causing your symptoms. Then, we Dr. Anne Hermann add back one food at a time to determine what food or foods caused the symptom. The second and easiest way to determine whether you have a food sensitivity is blood testing. A blood test will tell you if you have an allergy and how severe the allergy is. In the old days (not too long ago), if someone had a food allergy, their only option was to eliminate that food from their diet. This is difficult to do because certain foods, like soy, wheat, corn, dairy, and egg are found in small amounts in many food items. Now, patients have the option of taking sublingual allergy drops by Allergy Easy. These drops provide treatment for 59 different foods. Allergy drops have allowed Dr. Hermann to help many people who have multiple food allergies and have not been able to fully eliminate the foods they are allergic to from their diet. Dr. Hermann is proud to be offering the full spectrum of food sensitivity testing and treatment in a safe medical environment. Anne Hermann, MD is double board certified in Internal Medicine and as a Physician Nutrition Specialist. She has been practicing in Tampa Bay since 2003. (813) 902-9559

ichelle Betts refused to seek solace in Haagen-Dazs after breaking up with a boyfriend eight years ago. Instead of diving into the clichĂŠd universal comforter for broken hearts, she decided on a more abs-friendly remedy. "I immediately joined a gym and that's how I got over the breakup," the 34-year-old Hollywood actor recalls in a phone interview from Los Angeles. "I literally walked up the street to Crunch (Fitness)." Her workouts were cathartic. In time, her emotional wounds healed. And in the process, Betts transformed into a self-confessed fitness fanatic. "I became very known at the gym. I would talk to all the trainers and the people taking classes," she says. "Then I got more into the nutrition aspect and I got really hardcore." Prior to signing up for her first gym membership, Betts was "like most people," she notes. "I've never been overweight. I've always taken care of myself." But Betts -- the proud owner of six-pack abs -- has never been fitter than she is now. She trains six days a week, doing everything

from yoga and resistance training to hiking. And when she's not training herself, she's training others. Betts, who earned her personal training certification two years ago through the National Academy of Sports Medicine, takes clients through a series of cardio, balance, core, plyometrics and resistance exercises. She also likes to take clients hiking in L.A.'s Runyon Canyon Park. "If you go hiking with me, we're not just going to hike," she says. "I make you do jumping jacks at the top and ab work at the bottom." Betts describes herself as a "big ball of energy." But she's not big. At five-foot-four, her weight hovers around 105 to 110 pounds. While she's looking to gain a couple more pounds of muscle on her petite frame, Betts is also working to further develop her burgeoning acting career. The one-time body double for Demi Moore is appearing this fall in the fourth season of the hit VH1 reality dating show Tough Love: Miami. Her past credits include a sci-fi thriller on Showtime called Galaxy Hunter, a national McDonald's commercial, and a sexy online comedy known as Party Girl Plus One. Betts looking young -- a major plus in superficial Tinseltown. "I still get carded for alcohol sometimes," she says with a laugh, noting she enjoys the occasional glass of wine with dinner. "What you put in your body makes a huge difference." To that end, Betts eats plenty of organic whole foods and avoids processed fare for the most part. And once a week, she allows herself a "cheat meal" -- usually Mexican food or a couple pieces of pizza. "You have to give yourself a break," she adds. "If you don't, you're going to binge." Betts knows she's fortunate to be a size zero. But maintaining a svelte physique isn't her workout priority. And it shouldn't be yours either, she says. "We were all born with different features," she says. "No matter what shape and size you are, always love yourself."

SIMPLE NUTRITION TIPS FROM MICHELLE *Always start your day with breakfast, eat within 60 minutes of rising *At every meal make sure there is a serving of fruits or vegetables *Eat your calories, don’t drink them (unless it’s a protein shake) *Limit your intake of processed and fast foods *Eat within 60 minutes after exercising *Stay away from anything fried *Substitute olive oil instead of butter, olive oil is a good fat your body needs *Choose a salad with mixed greens or spinach, always opt for balsamic vinaigrette or clear dressing *Give yourself one cheat meal a week, where you can eat whatever you want, this prevents bingeing *At restaurants take one piece of bread, or a few chips, and have the waiter take the rest away *Take your time eating, enjoy your meal, and chew your food slowly *When consuming alcohol, opt for heart healthy wine or a light beer, stay away from shots full of sugar *Don’t over-do it with cheese, a little goes a long way, feta is always best *Red, lean meat is fine, but no more than twice a week *Broccoli is a fat burner and cancer fighter, try and add it to as many meals as possible *Look down at your plate and make sure it is full of color, if it isn’t, add colorful fruits or veggies www.tampabaywellness.com

Metabolism with Just a Few Changes

F

orever the mantra has been, “if you need to lose weight, then it’s just a matter of calories in/calories out. You need to eat less and expend more energy, i.e., exercise more to burn more calories than you take in.” Sure, if you are sitting in your recliner all day eating bonbons, then yes, we have a problem. For most, however, it may seem as though no matter how well we try to eat or how consistent we are with fitness, the pounds either don’t budge, or worse, keep slowly piling up.

The rules have changed and it’s based on metabolism. It appears there are other factors at work here, there is a different picture being painted. It has to do with biochemistry, the chemistry of our bodies and how strong the body is functioning scientifically at the cellular level. Is it possible to crank up the fat-burning system? What, in other words, does it take to get the metabolism turbocharged? “The process of metabolism establishes

16 january 2012 • Tampa Bay Wellness

the rate at which we burn our calories and, ultimately, how quickly we gain weight or how easily we lose it,” says Robert Yanagisawa, MD, director of the Medically Supervised Weight Management Program at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York. Metabolism involves a complex network of hormones and enzymes that not only convert food into fuel but also affect how efficiently you burn that fuel. Of course, not everyone burns calories at the same rate. That’s just the start of where the old adage of calories in/calories out is being challenged. Your metabolism is influenced by age (metabolism naturally slows about 5% per decade after age 40); sex (men generally burn more calories at rest than women); and the proportion of lean body mass (the more muscle you have, the higher your metabolic rate tends to be, which is why men typically can lose weight faster than women). It’s the luck of the draw; some people just burn calories at a slower rate than others. But

the good news is, you can have a huge amount of control over your metabolic rate just by making a few changes.

Keep the campfire burning

Think of your metabolism as a campfire. The goal is to keep adding kindling to the fire to keep the fire burning strong (i.e., small, healthy snacks throughout the day). No more kindling, the fire burns out (going all day without eating). A big log gets thrown onto the fire, the fire is smothered out (big meals will slow metabolism, especially at dinner time, late in the day). What constitutes kindling for the fire in our metabolism scenario?

• Breakfast

If you skip breakfast you are 4.5 times likely to be overweight. Eat more during the day, less at night. Reflecting again on Calories in/Calories out; does the timing of the intake of calories make a difference?

www.tampabaywellness.com

In a recent animal study, scientists found that mice who ate a high-fat diet during their normal waking hours gained 20 percent in weight over six weeks. But those who ate the same high-fat diet during the hours they should have been sleeping gained 48 percent in weight over six weeks. Researchers say they suspect that the results would be the same in humans and they say this study as well as others cast doubt on the conventional “calories in, calories out” idea of weight gain. “How or why a person gains weight is very complicated, but it clearly is not just calories in and calories out,” said study leader Fred Turek, professor of neurobiology and physiology at Northwestern University. “We think some factors are under circadian control. Better timing of meals, which would require a change in behavior, could be a critical element in slowing the ever-increasing incidence of obesity.” Wake up hungry! It’s a good sign that you’ve likely lost weight while sleeping. Too many people eat late at night and then wake up with a food hangover. Instead, fuel your body when your body needs it, during the day. When you put too many hours between fuel intake, your metabolism actually slows down to compensate.

Protein

“Every pound of muscle in our bodies burns 35 calories a day, while each pound of fat burns just 2 calories per day.”

More muscle=more metabolism (kindling to keep the fire roaring). Planning protein into every meal helps build and maintain lean muscle mass. Muscle burns more calories than fat does, even at rest. Protein generally requires about 25% more energy to digest. So, a high-protein snack might rev metabolism a little more than a carb-heavy food with the same number of calories. Start your day with protein, even a spoonful of a good nut butter, to get the metabolism off to a great start. There are two types of protein: Animal protein: fish; beef, pork, turkey, chicken, etc. Dairy and eggs are bi-products of animal. Plant protein: beans, nuts, seeds, nut butters, and any soy products which are made from the soybean.

• Mindful Eating

Chew Slowly! By simply chewing food thoroughly, we can enhance digestion and eliminate some of the problems of indigestion which can slow metabolism. In May All Be Fed, John Robbins describes three men who survived in a concentration camp during World War II by chewing their food very well, while their compatriots perished.

• Half your Body Weight in Ounces

Have you heard that new rule? Water should become your best friend because it not only does wonders for your looks, it could be the missing element to your weight loss. In addition, there are more benefits. By flushing out impurities (think of drinking water as taking an internal shower), you will have a clear, glowing complexion. Saggy skin due to aging or weight loss will change when cells become hydrated and plump. www.tampabaywellness.com

And finally, water also helps improve muscle tone. Additionally, increasing your water intake will naturally speed up your metabolism, allowing your body to better absorb nutrients from food and supplements. There are conflicting reports as to whether cold water vs. warm water is better for metabolism. I have heard it both ways. My feeling is, hot or cold, “just do it,” to borrow a well-known fitness slogan. Whatever it takes for you to get the daily allotment. Not drinking enough water may be holding you back from losing weight. By not drinking enough water, you actually may be increasing your body fat. When your body gets dehydrated, the body seeks water from other sources, including fat cells. If your fat cells have less water, there is less mobilization of fat for energy. You want your fat stores used for energy. Women who don’t drink sufficient fluids can get that blownup belly feeling despite all their other efforts to get rid of it. Further, in Your Body’s Many Cries for Water, Dr. Batmanghelidj states that America suffers from chronic dehydration. “Heartburn, headache, joint and back pain, and fatigue are not true diseases. They are dehydration-induced disorders. I tell people, ‘you’re not sick, you’re thirsty!’ ‘” The best time to drink water is as soon as you get out of bed when your body is dehydrated from the night before. Water first thing in the morning begins the hydration process and immediately begins to boost metabolism (kindling). But only sip water during meals. You want your own digestive enzymes to digest food so you can absorb nutrients properly. Though you probably don’t think about it often, water is the most essential element, next to air, to your survival. So don’t take it lightly. Water consumption must be at the top of your list in your quest for a fit and healthy body.

Are the Chemicals in our Food Making •us Fat?

New scientific evidence suggests that many environmental toxins, in addition to poisoning our bodies, appear to be disrupting our natural weight-regulation system. Paula Baillie-Hamilton, M.D., a British specialist in human metabolism and environmental health has published an extensive study of commonly used synthetic chemicals. “I discovered that these chemicals appear to be making us fat. Time and again, when I learned about a different group of pesticides or environmental pollutants, I would soon discover that they too could cause weight gain.” People’s natural ability to regulate their weight is being disrupted. Translation: metabolism is stalled. Obviously we are talking organic food selection here but that may not always be practical. Meats and dairy are probably the most important foods to try to choose consistently organic. And there are more options than ever with traditional supermarkets vying for the attention of the clients of natural grocery food stores. With regards to produce, check out the website foodnews.org/fulllist, for the list of the most important produce items that should be organic. A healthier way to replace your soda fix! Forget the empty calories, chemical sweeteners and artifical flavors... fill up your cup with fruity teas in hundreds of different flavors. Drinking peach white and green teas with a bit of honey helped me break the soda addiction more than 10 years ago. The added bonus is you’ll also get a good dose of cancer fighting antioxidants and much more! Check out the 10 reasons to switch to tea below. I stopped by the cutest tea boutique in South Tampa on Davis Islands. TeBella sells hundreds of loose-leaf teas including many organics. The owner is pretty funny too... he says why support the corporate tea stores when you can help his 10-month-old pay for college!

nins that may keep plaque at bay.

1. Tea contains antioxidants. Antioxidants protect your body from pollution and diseases. 2. Tea has less caffeine than coffee. Coffee usually has two to three times the caffeine of tea. An eight-ounce cup of coffee contains around 135 mg caffeine. Tea contains roughly 30 to 40 mg.

9. Tea is calorie-free. Drinking flavored teas can be a healthy way to satisfy your sweet tooth. Adding a dollup of honey sweetens it a bit without too many extra calories.

3. Tea may reduce your risk of heart attack and stroke. Researchers say drinking tea may help keep your arteries smooth and clog-free. A study from the Netherlands found people who drank at least two to three cups of black tea a day had 70 percent lower risk of fatal heart attack compared to non-tea drinkers.

• The Latest Research on Alcohol

While not wanting to be the bearer of some really bad news, the latest research shows that the equivalent of just two mixed drinks (or two glasses of wine or two bottles of beer) puts the brakes on metabolism by a whopping 73 percent, for perhaps up to 18 hours. That’s because your liver converts the alcohol into acetate and starts using that as fuel instead of your fat stores, report researchers from the University of California, Berkeley. Therefore, alcohol may be best consumed as an occasional weekend treat instead of a consistent daily habit.

• Changing the Fat to Muscle Ratio

Among the best ways to turbocharge metabolism is exercise. This includes cardiovascular workouts to burn more calories in the short term and resistance training to build the muscles that will boost your metabolism in the long run. Slaving away inside your body is your very own personal trainer, working tirelessly to help you burn calories and shed fat. It’s your muscle. Since muscle burns more calories than fat -- even while at rest -- the more muscles you have, the higher your resting metabolic rate, which means the more calories your body will be burning just to sustain you, i.e., “kindling.”

Set your metabolism on fire!

Cardio exercise, while important, is very overrated for losing weight. It does not do much to change the fat/muscle ratio. It’s excellent for what it is, cardiovascular. Nothing beats it for making the heart, lungs and vascular system strong. Resistance training, however, is the key to giving strength to the muscles and therefore, boosting metabolism. While 30 minutes of cardio may burn more calories than 30 minutes of resistance training, resistance training has a longer-lasting effect on boosting metabolism. With the added benefit of anti-aging the physical structure of the body. Remember, resistance training isn’t just weight training; it’s resistance work such as yoga, Pilates, using the stability ball or bands. Your own body weight can be used for resistance. Jump down and do some push ups or just hold plank position, either on straight arms or on your elbows and toes for as long as you can. Google fitness exercises without weights and you’ll be surprised at the myriad of exercises listed. Set your metabolism on fire by mindfully eating small meals with protein, especially at breakfast. Hydrate. Restrict alcohol and chemicals. Mostly, work to burn fat, gain muscle and stay fit and strong. Follow these simple steps to keep a roaring campfire and, who knows, maybe you’ll even find other areas of your life improving!

Keep Colds and Flu from Catching You

T

functional ability of our most powerful Natural Killer immune cells, blocks cancer in the body, reduces inflammation and safely removes heavy metals and environmental toxins. These diverse benefits make MCP a powerful daily supplement for immune and overall health. By Dr. Isaac Eliaz

here’s just no getting around it. Once the temperature drops, cold and flu season returns to loom over our health like stormy weather. The impacts of our fast-paced lifestyles, holiday travels and festivities, along with the seasonal changes, lead most of us to believe that colds and flu are inevitable facts of winter. But they’re not. With healthy diet, lifestyle choices and supplementation, you can protect yourself year-round with natural solutions that will help strengthen your defenses and keep you vibrant and energized.

Cold or Flu? Know the Difference As an integrative physician, my patients often come to me with an important question: how can I tell whether I have a cold or the flu? Both are respiratory illnesses, but each is caused by different viruses. In general, colds are usually milder than the flu and present symptoms that include nasal stuffiness, sneezing and a runny nose. Adults and older children generally have minimal or no fever, but infants and toddlers often run a fever in the 100-102 degree range. Depending on which virus is the offender, a cold might also produce a headache, cough, postnasal drip, burning eyes, muscle aches, or a decreased appetite—but the most prominent cold symptoms are usually nasal related. The flu is a much more serious illness and can produce symptoms such as fever, body aches, fatigue, and dry cough. Most people who get the flu recover within a week (although they may have a lingering cough and tire easily for a while longer), but for elderly people, newborn babies and people with certain chronic illnesses, the flu and its complications can become life threatening.

Healthy Lifestyle for Immune Support Keeping the immune system in top form does take a bit of vigilance. That’s because there are numerous contributing factors that can weaken immunity, including stress, exhaustion, chronic inflammation, sedentary lifestyle, overly processed/refined foods, dehydration, and exposure to toxins, among others. Combat challenges to your immune system by following these health-promoting habits. You will not only boost your immune system, but your overall health and vitality as well: Hydration: One of the most important things you can do to steer clear of illness is to stay hydrated, since water comprises over half of your body mass. 20 january 2012 • Tampa Bay Wellness

Proper hydration allows for efficient transmission of your body’s most critical communications, and helps eliminate toxins and foreign invaders so you can clear infection more efficiently. Proper Sleep: Deep, restorative sleep cycles are a fundamental part of your body’s repair process and a number of studies have demonstrated that failing to get enough sleep has numerous consequences for physical, mental and emotional health. It is important to set regular sleep patterns to help regulate and strengthen your immune system. Balanced Diet: A nutrient-rich diet emphasizing fresh fruits, vegetables, nourishing proteins and unprocessed foods is critical for maintaining optimal immune health throughout the seasons. This type of diet is linked with increased immune activity, decreased oxidative and free-radical damage, improved digestion, healthy inflammation response, healthy glucose metabolism, healthier lipid profiles and many other benefits. In addition, high quality proteins are essential to help your body maintain and build strength and immunity.

All-Natural Remedies In addition to leading a balanced lifestyle, incorporating certain nutrients, herbs and supplements into your daily routine offers critical support for short and long term immune health: Modified Citrus Pectin (MCP): Modified Citrus Pectin is an all-natural supplement made from citrus fruit peels and modified for enhanced absorption and bio-activity throughout the body. Numerous studies show that MCP is a powerful anti-cancer therapy, anti-inflammatory, and a safe chelator of heavy metals and toxins. Recent studies also prove its ability to significantly enhance immune function for both short term and long term immunity. MCP boosts the

Medicinal Mushrooms: Medicinal mushrooms regulate immune function and combat infection, especially on a long-term basis. Mushrooms naturally contain Beta glucan compounds which enhance immunity by boosting macrophage activity – your first line of defense. Species that are especially beneficial for immunity include Reishi, Cordyceps, Maitake, and Shiitake, among others. Each offers numerous health benefits that can improve vitality, decrease harmful pathogens in the body, and even prevent deadly viruses from infecting us. Herbal Formulas: There are many powerful herbs and herbalyformulas support. My isafor immune otchkiss top recommendations include the Chinese herbal rainer formulas Yin Qiao San,at Gui Ziody Tang and ynamics Ge Gen Tang, as well as a Tibetan herbal formula containing 19 unique botanical ingredients that synergistically perform to reduce inflammation, boost circulation, improve immune function, and increase antioxidant defenses. Also, tonifying and adaptogenic herbs such as Astragalus, Ginseng and Eleutherococcus (Siberian ginseng) can be effective on a preventative level or can help combat symptoms once they’ve set in, depending on the specific characteristics of the flu or cold.

Vitamins and Minerals: Research shows that daily doses of vitamin C, vitamin D-3 (especially during winter) and zinc offer significant boosts to the immune system. Zinc is also the most important mineral to the thymus gland, which orchestrates the immune function in the human body. Lastly, practice common sense tactics on a daily basis to maintain your health and keep from getting sick. Some of the easiest and most effective strategies include keeping your distance from people who are sick, avoiding contact with your nose, eyes or mouth, and washing your hands frequently. A NEW YEAr - A NEW YOU!

I

t’s the season for new beginnings and resolutions! Now let’s be honest, people stick to New Year resolutions for a matter of weeks and then the spring in the step disappears and determination fades. Don’t let that happen to you again this year. “Getting fit and losing weight” is one of the top New Year’s Resolutions each year. To help you with the New You this year, let’s start with “Getting Fit”. Say goodbye to last year’s exercise habits and boring routine, and welcome in the New Year full of enthusiasm with your fitness goals. Here are a few tips to help you keep your New Year’s Getting Fit Resolution all year long. • Hire a personal trainer to get you started or to mix up your old routine for a new one • Set realistic goals for yourself that will not set yourself up for failure • Join the gym with a friend, you can help motivate each other • Make yourself a priority so you don’t skip your workouts

Next let’s discuss that dreaded issue… “Losing Weight. This is one of the most popular goals among the majority of us. It’s always on our minds, especially during the holiday season and well into the New Year. Most people do not realize how to properly “Diet”. One of the biggest mistakes made when dieting is to consume only one or two meals a day. They feel by starving themselves, they will melt away fat quickly. This is a very big mistake! When you go without eating for more than a few hours you are lowering your metabolism so your body can conserve its energy for normal cellular activity. What is often one of the main goals we are trying to accomplish when we are working so hard in the gym? You are trying to burn calories by increasing our metabolism. When you don’t eat, your metabolism lowers and you won’t be burning calories. When your metabolism is working your body will be more efficient at burning calories even at rest! So don’t skip meals….eat little healthy meals

several times throughout the day roughly every 3 hours for the most effective weight loss. How many of you have been cutting meals for years and how many of you are at your goal weight? MAKING TIME FOR THE DIVINE

T

he teachings of Paramahansa Yogananda present many practical methods for bringing awareness of divinity into all the moments of our daily lives. Meditation is the foundation. But generally that is only a relatively small portion of one’s day. I find it helpful to have a “checklist”—anytime we go through a period when our spiritual efforts seem stagnant, reviewing this list will likely reveal a solution. 1) Bring a cosmic perspective to your commonplace decisions. A great help in preventing your spiritual focus from being diffused by the complexities of mundane life is to view them in terms of the universal cosmic setup. The universe is created according to a dual principle. There is a force of repulsion—maya—by which creation is projected out from God and a counterforce of attraction—the power of Divine Love—that ultimately draws everything back to Spirit again. You are in the middle, with free will to choose which force you will cooperate with, in which direction you will move. 2) View problems as agents of spiritual progress. When facing difficulties, we tend to be discouraged. Instead, steady yourself with a different outlook: Problems are actually a help; greet them with a positive spirit: “What spiritual part of my being can I exercise to overcome this?” 3) Never be submissive to a negative environment. How easy it is to abandon divine principles under the sway of worldly values. Others may be willing to encourage our wrong actions, but they aren’t the ones who have to pay the price. It takes courage to fight degrading environmental influences by actively upholding spiritual principles and qualities. 4) Create a strong, positive inner environment by practicing the presence of God. Keep a devotional thought rolling in the background of your mind. Though our intellect may be fully occupied with the task at hand, we have a higher faculty—intuitive feeling—which can register an awareness of God in the background of our consciousness. 5) Persevere in your daily meditation. Meditation enriches all of these other practices, and they in turn make it easier to go deep in meditation. By persevering in the practice of even some of these methods of bringing God into daily life, we will find our hearts and minds filled with such divine love, strength, and joy that we will no longer wonder how to “make time” for God. We will know that God is with us always. Long-time Self-Realization Fellowship (SRF) monastic Brother Anilananda will be in Tampa in February for a weekend program on the teachings of Paramahansa Yogananda, which will include a free public talk “Meditation: Expanding Your Heart’s Love” on Friday, February 17 at 8 p.m. The event will take place at Sheraton Tampa Riverwalk Hotel, 200 North Ashley Dr., Tampa. or the past 5,000 years, China amassed a diverse legacy of heroes, myths, and values that still resonate in the present. Today, Shen Yun Performing Arts is reviving the essence of traditional Chinese culture in full color on stages around the world. “It was an extraordinary experience,” said Academy Award-winning actress Cate Blanchett after watching Shen Yun, “the level of skill, but also the power of the archetypes and the narratives were startling. And of course it was exquisitely beautiful.” Ride with Mongolians across endless steppes. Recall the grandeur of an ancient Tang Dynasty palace. Alternatives for Arthritis How Food and Acupuncture Helps Chronic Pain

Dr. Mary Riggin

“If you or someone you know suffers from chronic pain like arthritis or fibromyalgia, the practice of Oriental medicine might be right for you.”

K

aren came to our office looking for help for her chronic arthritis pain and inflammation. Being tired and fed up with all the medications, she wanted an alternative. The long-term effects on her liver, kidneys and digestive system concerned her. She had already survived breast cancer and wanted to be proactive in her health. Since she had read about the various forms of natural healthcare available, she decided to try acupuncture. The 5000-year history of the medicine intrigued her, and her personal research showed that there were no negative side effects associated with the practice! She couldn’t believe it; this was too good to be true. Even the World Health Organization and the National Institutes of Health confirmed all the wonderful claims. She was curious as to why her MD never suggested it, considering all the positive information she found, but nevertheless, she decided to give it a try. She was impressed that the consultation included such a detailed, extensive history; no doctor had ever spent that much time evaluating her entire health history. Her care plan included acupuncture, massage, a specialized arthritis protocol and food recommendations. She had no idea that her food choices could make a difference in her pain levels. The first nutritional recommendation was the elimination of food chemicals found in processed foods. The second was the addition of foods that would support the healing process stimulated by her acupuncture and herbal treatment. These included lots of fresh, 24 january 2012 • Tampa Bay Wellness

organic vegetables, fruits, nuts, meats, dairy, beans and legumes. Sugars, artificial sweeteners and wheat were to be avoided. Though this process would require some changes in her eating habits, it made sense to use “food as medicine” instead of allowing her taste buds to decide what she would eat. It also enabled her to be proactive every day in her quest for an improved quality of life. This gave her some control back and gave her hope. Karen was sure this change would be a struggle because the foods she eliminated were some of her favorites. Coffee without a doughnut or bagel seemed like a bleak future, but she decided to endure it for the sake of her health. After just a few weeks of treatment and food changes, she was thrilled with the results. She was even more delighted that her taste buds were changing and she actually enjoyed her new diet. There was no struggle to endure! Sure, she had to exercise some self-control, but it was not hard because of the results. Her pain reduced significantly, her hands, feet and knees were moving much better. This strongly reinforced her willingness to stay consistent with her food choices and treatment plan. Karen worked on healthy substitutes for foods she craved. Much to her amazement, she began to delight in a wide variety of fresh, organic homemade foods. She found that while it took time to prepare food at home, she could satisfy urges for foods deemed destructive to her with foods that were construc-

tive. Karen’s arthritis pain is now non-existent and many other issues, including her stubborn belly fat, have been helped during her course of treatment. Even the painful scar tissue that developed after her surgery is no longer giving her trouble. Karen’s story is not unusual. The key element was her commitment to her health. She was willing to do what it takes to make the difference. To achieve optimal results using Oriental medicine and acupuncture for chronic pain, we recommend “food as medicine” as a part of a comprehensive plan. Other treatment modalities may also include acupuncture, acupressure, tui-na massage, exercise recommendations, nutritional supplements and Chinese herbal medicine. If you or someone you know suffers from chronic pain like arthritis or fibromyalgia, the practice of Oriental medicine might be right for you. I encourage you to consult with a skilled, licensed acupuncturist to find out if this medicine can help you achieve an improved quality of life. Dr. Mary Riggin, LAc is a free lance writer, FL licensed primary healthcare provider and Doctor of Oriental Medicine. A Holotropic Breathwork Journey

W

By Karen Castle

inter is the prime season for doing inner work because it is more natural to retreat and go inward at this time of year. Holotropic Breathwork is about taking a deep look into the Self, one’s inner wisdom or the inner healer. This is most powerful work I know of for self-growth and healing. The work is done lying on a mat with deep and fast breathing while listening to journeying music. Basically, it is all about the inner journey, which often reflects our patterns and old belief systems. The music is a myriad of cross-cultural instrumental pieces and vocals that are based on ancient language or native chants. It does not separate culture rather it brings culture together. There are many more practical advantages to doing Holotropic Breathwork which relate to varying blockages of self-growth and/or healing. The most common reasons people do Holotropic Breathwork is because they are stuck in old belief patterns which keep them from reaching their highest potential.

The inward journey is a wonderful reflection of the movement towards the one. The outward journey can be utilized in the same way if we allow our selves to see it this way. We are all the same manifestations of Divine energy. We are all spiritual beings living a human life. Going inward through Holotropic Breathwork allows us to practice this concept and change our perspective so we can live our everyday lives and hopefully “be the change that we want to see in the world.” Karen Castle provides an atmosphere of comfort and trust, paving the way for students yearning for an inward journey. BRAIN FUNCTION | DIET | EXERCISE

TAKE THE BAD BRAIN HABIT QUIZ Write down the number associated with the answer you give to each question.

By Alison J. Kay

R

ecently I wrote about the nature of our times and how it is effecting the monkey mind, and the necessity of learning to work with our consciousness, our thoughts, our emotions and our life force energy, or chi or prana. We are a being made up of a body, a mind and a spirit, with much in between. In focusing on how to support our consciousness thriving in such times of change, upheaval and high speed energy at a subatomic level, we also need to focus on the physical aspects. This means what we should eat, what we should physically be doing to optimize our brain and mind’s capabilities, while controlling for less than optimal performance, like depression or nervous system disorders or even immune system disorders - all of course having to do with the mind/brain and the central nervous system. Heavy metal poisoning is looked to as the culprit for many neurological disorders. So part of the program I use when working with clients with such challenges is a cleansing of their system using a dietary approach; food is medicine. Your Daily habits and routines are either hurting or helping your brain. One of the major obstacles to your success is your behavior every day. I find that even with the energy healing sessions, my clients need support to make the changes at the daily lifestyle level, or else the pattern, or illness or issue, won’t be completely healed. We need positive behaviors to replace damaging ones. Diet is typically one of the first places I look to, along with their most typical mental state, or mood, or emotional state because both create our bodies‘ biochemistry. Lousy Diet You literally are what you eat. Every cell in your body, including brain cells, make themselves new every five months. Some cells, like those that make up your skin, regenerate every thirty days. Eating a healthy, balanced diet provides the nutrients and fuel to drive optimal brain function. Your diet makes a big difference in how you feel. Yet so many of us are diet disasters. Obesity and diabetes are at epidemic proportions. Both of these problems are directly related to diet and are risk factors for Alzheimer’s disease. What you eat on a daily basis helps or hurts your brain. THE BEST BRAIN DIETS INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING: www.tampabaywellness.com

• Lots of pure water. The brain is 80% water. • Few calories. Obesity is bad for your brain, as fat stores toxic materials and obesity doubles the risk for Alzheimer’s disease. • Lean protein. Fish, chicken, lean pork, and beef, for example, all help build neurons. • Complex, low glycemic carbohydrates. These include whole grains, fruits, vegetables. • Healthy fats. Fish, avacados, and raw nuts all maintain nerve cell membranes and myelin. • Lots of dietary antioxidants, such as blueberries. I often tell my patients to eat from the rainbow (food with many different colors, although this does not mean Skittles). LACK OF EXERCISE No matter what your age, being a physical slug is bad for your brain, even if you are spending all of your time doing New York Times crossword puzzles. The brain needs physical exercise. Without it, the brain struggles. Exercise boosts blood flow to the brain, which helps supply oxygen, glucose, and nutrients and takes away toxic substances. Anything that limits blood flow results in poorer oxygenation, glucose delivery, and nutrient deficiencies. If the deep areas of the brain are starved of healthy blood flow you will have problems with coordination and processing complex thoughts. Exercise also increases brain-derived neurotrophic factor, a chemical that helps with neurogenesis. When we lose more cells than we make, aging occurs. In the laboratory rats, research shows that exercise generates new brain cells in the prefrontal cortex (judgment and thoughtfulness) and temporal lobes (memory), which survive for about four weeks and then die off unless they are stimulated. If you stimulate these new neurons through mental or social interaction, they connect to other neurons and enhance learning. This is why people who only work out at the gym are not as smart as people who work out at the gym and then go to the library. At every age, exercise helps keep the brain healthy. Without it, we become fatter, less intelligent, and definitely not happier. The best exercises combine aerobic elements, which means you get your heart rate up, with some form of coordination movement. Coordination movements such as dancing, table tennis or yoga activate the cerebellum, at the back bottom part of the brain, and enhances thinking, cognitive flexibility, and processing speed.

0-Never 1-Rarely 2-Occasionally 3-Frequently 4-Very Frequently NA A. My diet is poor and tends to be haphazard. B. I do not exercise. C. I put myself at risk for brain injuries by doing such things as not wearing my seat belt, drinking and driving, engaging in high risk sports, and so on. D. I live under daily or chronic stress, in my home or work life. E. My thoughts tend to be negative, worried, or angry. F. I have problems getting at least 6-7 hours of sleep a night. G. I smoke or am exposed to secondhand smoke. H. I drink or consume more than two normal sized (8 ounces) cups of coffee, tea, or dark sodas a day. I. I use aspartame and/or MSG. J. I am around environmental toxins, such as paint fumes, hair or nail salon fumes, or pesticides. K. I spend more than one hour a day watching TV. L. I spend more than one hour a day playing computer or video games. M. Outside my work time, I spend more than one hour a day on the computer. N. I have more than three normal-sized drinks of alcohol (8 ounces of beer or wine or 1 ounce of hard liquor) a week. Results: 0-6 great brain habits 7-12 really good; work to be better 13-20 fair; you are prematurely aging your brain > 20 poor; time to be very consumed
