confident person.

If you relate to any of the above... Have you tried every diet out there or at least it feels like it? summer's almost over and you’re wondering what your game plan is to finally get this weight off your body? I can recall many, many years of making the same decision to fight. I’d tell myself, “ This time I’m going to go on a special diet, I will exercise, and I will lose the weight—and keep it off .” I’d launch into the latest diet craze involving starving, or only eating certain foods, or taking dozens of supplement pills every day, or sometimes all three. It was usually some sort of routine that was sheer punishment.

Andrea Crouch

Sure enough, I’d lose weight, but then I’d start to feel stressed and oppressed by the strict regimen and would go back to my good old friend—food. It was positively draining each time I’d have to start all over with a new diet.

Give us a call and we’ll personalize a program for you and you can resolve to paint the bedroom instead of dieting!

I used to gain and lose the same weight over and over again, but now I’ve lost the extra pounds and maintained the same weight for over 10 years! By this time next year, you could be just like the many Hungry Heart clients who are living healthy lifestyles, have learned how to take good care of themselves and no longer turn to food to deal with what is emotionally going on in their life. Hungry Heart clients no longer deal with the internal struggle and self-sabotage of dieting and binging, or make poor food choices. They’ve learned to eat when they’re hungry, stop when they’re satisfied, and handle life and their emotions completely independently.

Proposed Cigarette Product

Warning Labels

T

he Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act (Tobacco Control Act) requires that cigarette packages and advertisements have larger and more visible graphic health warnings.

FDA issued a proposed rule, Required Warnings for Cigarette Packages and Advertisements, proposing to modify the required warnings that appear on cigarette packages and in cigarette advertisements. These new required warnings would consist of nine new textual warning statements accompanied by color graphics depicting the negative health consequences of smoking.

6 JANUARY 2011 • Tampa Bay Wellness

The Tobacco Control Act requires FDA to issue final regulations requiring these color graphics by June 22, 2011. It also specifies that the requirement for the new health warnings on cigarette packages and advertisements will take effect 15 months after issuance of this final rule.

Placement Location on Cigarette Packages & Advertising The Tobacco Control Act requires that the nine graphic health warnings appear on the upper por-

tion of the front and rear panels of each cigarette package and comprise at least the top 50 percent of these panels. It also requires that they appear in each cigarette advertisement, and occupy at least 20 percent of the advertisement. For advertisements with a surface area less than 12 square inches, the proposed rule provides a subset of proposed color graphics to accompany the nine textual warning statements.

this living practice, layers of cultural, psychological and physiological contractions unwind, releasing a wellspring of creative energy (aka prana or shakti). Becoming a yoga teacher is a deeply personal, healing journey towards remembering who we really are and returning home to our organic, life-affirming rhythms so that we may guide others to do the same. For the only way we can authentically guide others towards integrated embodiment is to commit ourselves to the work of awakening our own latent gifts and allowing them to thrive. Yoga is not just a path of asana and alignment… it is a path of living life as a vibrant, breathing, ever-evolving sacred art. Committing to the path of a yoga teacher is therefore, committing to the process embodying your own creative potential (shakti prana), allowing it to take shape in the world while inspiring others to do the same. Our Vinyasa Flow Teacher Training will awaken the living, healing art within and give you the essential tools to actualize some of your deepest potentials and thrive as both a teacher and an artist of life. Start where you are. Compassion and a sense of humor required. Dive in! Times: 9 Weekends: January – September 2011 (See Yogani website for more details, dates & times)

s Americans have grown fatter over the last generation, and children are now more obese, there is an increase in heart disease, diabetes and premature deaths. Good health starts with organically nutritious foods plus exercise − two of the things lacking from the lives of many children and parents. Organic Fit Kids presents "The Adventures of Robin Hood." This show’s focus is to entertain and enlighten children, parents, teachers and school board members on the benefits of eating gluten-free foods along with the benefits of fitness. DEFINED

T

he classical techniques of Yoga date back more than 5,000 years. In ancient times, the desire for greater personal freedom, health and long life, and heightened self-understanding gave birth to this system of physical and mental exercise which has since spread throughout the world. The word Yoga means “to join or yoke together,” and it brings the body and mind together into one harmonious experience.

Raja Yoga: Called the “royal road,” because it incorporates exercise and breathing practice with meditation and study, producing a wellrounded individual.

Jnana Yoga: The path of wisdom; considered the most difficult path.

Bhakti Yoga: The practice of extreme devotion in one-pointed concentration upon one’s concept of God.

Karma Yoga: All movement, all work of any kind is done with the mind centered on a personal concept of God.

Tantra Yoga: A way of showing the unseen consciousness in form through specific words, diagrams, and movements. One of the diagrams that is used to show the joining of the physical and spiritual bodies is two triangles superimposed upon one another. postures, plus breathing techniques. This is what most people associate with Yoga practice.

No one knows exactly when Yoga began, but it certainly predates written history. Stone carvings depicting figures in Yoga positions have been found in archeological sites in the Indus Valley dating back 5,000 years or more. There is a common misconception that Yoga is rooted in Hinduism; on the contrary, Hinduism’s religious structures evolved much later and incorporated some of the practices of Yoga. (Other religions throughout the world have also incorporated practices and ideas related to Yoga.) The tradition of Yoga has always been passed on individually from teacher to student through oral teaching and practical demonstration. The formal techniques that are now known as Yoga are, therefore, based on the collective experiences of many individuals over many thousands of years. The particular manner in which the techniques are taught and practiced today depends on the approach passed down in the line of teachers supporting the individual practitioner. One of the earliest texts having to do with Yoga was compiled by a scholar named Patanjali, who set down the most prevalent Yoga theories and practices of his time in a book he called Yoga Sutras (“Yoga Aphorisms”) as early as the 1st or 2nd century B.C. or as late as the 5th century A.D. (exact dates are unknown). The system that he wrote about is known as “Ashtanga Yoga,” or the eight limbs of Yoga, and this is what is generally referred to today as Classical Yoga. Most current adherents practice some variation of Patanjali’s system. The eight steps of Classical Yoga are 1) yama, meaning “restraint” — refraining from violence, continued on page 15

There are over a hundred different schools of Yoga. Some of the most well known are described below:

that everything in the universe has both male and female qualities. In Kashmir Shaivism, these male and female principles form an equal partnership, so interdependent that they cannot be separated. The attraction between them produces the ultimate union of opposites, creating the immense complexity of the universe that we enjoy and celebrate. Unlike other philosophies, Kashmir Shaivism is based in emotion rather than intellect. In fact, Shaivism says that intellectual understanding by itself will never lead us to the realization of the summit of Yoga. The system's great exponents teach that the egotistical intellect blocks our ability to fully experience our individual power.

The whole system of Yoga is built on three main structures: exercise, breathing, and meditation. The exercises of Yoga are designed to put pressure on the glandular systems of the body, thereby increasing its efficiency and total health. The body is looked upon as the primary instrument that enables us to work and evolve in the world, and so a Yoga student treats it with great care and respect. Breathing techniques are based on the concept that breath is the source of life in the body. The Yoga student gently increases breath control to improve the health and function of both body and mind. These two systems of exercise and breathing then prepare the body and mind for meditation, and the student finds an easy approach to a quiet mind that allows silence and healing from everyday stress. Regular daily practice of all three parts of this structure of Yoga produce a clear, bright mind and a strong, capable body.

lying, stealing, casual sex, and hoarding; 2) niyama, meaning “observance” — purity, contentment, tolerance, study, and remembrance; 3) asana, physical exercises; 4) pranayama, breathing techniques; 5) pratyahara, preparation for meditation, described as “withdrawal of the mind from the senses”; 6) dharana, concentration, being able to hold the mind on one object for a specified time; 7) dhyana, meditation, the ability to focus on one thing (or nothing) indefinitely; 8) samadhi, absorption, or realization of the essential nature of the self. Modern Western Yoga classes generally focus on the 3rd, 4th, and 5th steps.

Yoga probably arrived in the United States in the late 1800s, but it did not become widely known until the 1960s, as part of the youth culture’s growing interest in anything Eastern. As more became known about the beneficial effects of Yoga, it gained acceptance and respect as a valuable method for helping in the management of stress and improving health and well-being. Many physicians now recommend Yoga practice to patients at risk for heart disease, as well as those with back pain, arthritis, depression, and other chronic conditions.

Who Can Practice Yoga? Yoga is suitable for most adults of any age or physical condition. Because of the nonstrenuous nature of our approach to exercise, even those with physical limitations can find a beneficial routine of Yoga. Our "Easy Does it Yoga" program offers special techniques for those with physical limitations due to age, illness, injury, substance abuse recovery, obesity, or inactivity. We do not recommend most Yoga exercises for women during menstruation, for pregnant women, or for nursing mothers. Regular practice of breathing and meditation, however, is encouraged.

Yoga and Children Yoga exercises are not recommended for children under 16 because their bodies’ nervous and glandular systems are still growing, and the effect of Yoga exercises on these systems may interfere with natural growth. Two of my great teachers, Rama and Lakshmanjoo,

advised me of the dangers that Yoga asans may pose for young children. Children may safely practice meditation and simple breathing exercises as long as the breath is never held. These techniques can greatly help children learn to relax, concentrate, and reduce impulsiveness. Children trained in these techniques are better able to manage emotional upsets and cope with stressful events. There is no doubt that Yoga postures (asans) and breathing techniques affect the physical body. People these days commonly accept the fact that such therapies as acupressure, neuromuscular massage, and reflexology can have systemic effects due to pressure applied to certain areas of the body. The physical basis for the effects of Yoga asans may be related. The asans and breathing techniques provide a deep massage and strong compression of the parts of the body where endocrine glands are located. Many Yoga stretches seem to target the nerves in the legs, arms, neck, and spine. In sum, our position is that growth is in large measure controlled by the glandular system. It is a vastly complicated process, and the powerful physical and mental effects of Yoga asans may interfere with natural growth.

How to Get Started The best way to get started in Yoga is to either find a qualified teacher or buy a good book or tape. If you’re not sure where to start looking, try adult education programs, Family Ys, massage and dance studios, and look for posters or listings in local health food stores or right here in Tampa Bay Wellness.

D Treating Childhood Illnesses

Holistically

id you know, we are always exposed to and often harbor “germs” and yet we only occasionally get sick? To maintain health, we must keep an inner balance in body and soul, while our bodies are constantly growing and renewing. Childhood is the time of most rapid growth and change. Every remodeling job requires some demolition, a breaking down of part of the inherited bodily structure in order to rebuild itself. It is the immune system that does the breaking down by causing cell death, and when necessary fever and inflammation needed to destroy and digest foreign or outworn bodily material. This debris gets pushed out of the body via fevers, skin rashes and discharges, a sign that the immune system is working. Every cold, sort throat, earache, and fever is a healing crisis and a cleansing process. It is the body’s way of rebuilding and making a more suitable dwelling. Using natural remedies, can help the illness to work its way out of the body so that healing can occur. Antibiotics, aspirin, ibuprofen, and other antiinflammatory drugs, cool down the “fire” of the immune system so that the

symptoms subside before the illness has fully worked its way out of the body. This inflammation will then either come back or the tendency toward allergies and asthma will be increased. Although an antibiotic may be needed if the inflammatory response of the immune system gets out of control, this rarely happens in healthy people. Antibiotics and anti-inflammatories never heal an inflammation, they only suppress it. The causes of the inflammation must be healed or the immune system remains weakened. What can we do to ease the symptoms of our children’s healing transitions?

1. Cleansing & Detox At the first onset of symptoms, the first thing you should do is cleanse the body, so it can rid itself of poisons quicker. Eliminate all proteins from the diet. The body is trying to digest the illness and proteins hold up that process as they are trying to be digested instead. Drink lots of herbal teas, broths and watered down juices.

2. Fever If a child (or adult) with a high fever is very uncomfortable and restless, this is a sign of toxicity and their bod-

ies should be cleansed. Rubbing the arms, legs, and head with a washcloth moistened with water and lemon juice or arnica gel will aid in the pain. Always keep the neck to the knees covered. Rub the skin vigorously to make the skin red; this will help to dissipate excess body heat. You want to help rid the body of toxins by causing the body to perspire and the kidneys to eliminate. Keep them bundled up and offer warm liquids. Most fevers will be broken by the next day. Remember a fever is a good sign that your body is working. If you try to lower it with a fever reducer the illness will just stay in the body longer. Keep them warmly dressed during a fever. When the fever is rising, their bodies get a chill and they want to get warm. (Infants are an exception to this rule, and when a fever of over 101 degrees is present, you should call your pediatrician.)

3. Reduce Noise During an illness, children need peace and quiet though they rarely express this need. They are generally disturbed by loud noises and sounds. Out of boredom, they ask to watch the TV or listen to the radio. These kinds of stimulation should be limited or avoided and should be replaced by just “being there” for your child. I have found that all children, whether ill or not, deeply need the presence of a loved one near them more than anything. Illness is a time to remove oneself from pressures and routines and to totally veg out. If possible, have a parent call in sick to work just to be with your child. I understand that this is not always possible.

4. Raw Garlic I swear by it. It is a remarkable bacteria and fungus fighter. I put it on whole wheat noodles with some organic butter or ghee (clarified butter). Adults can add red pepper.

7. Reiki I use Reiki healing energy everyday on my children. I find the third eye and heart chakras are in need of healing during a cold or flu. Administer frequent treatments throughout the day until the child feels more like her/ himself again. Remember, their little bodies don’t need much. They’ll let you know when they’ve had enough. Most people believe that the more illnesses a child gets, the stronger their immune system becomes. As a general rule this may be true, but only if we allow their bodies to completely heal. Use your instincts. Every child has a different makeup. An infant’s immune system is very immature the first year. Sometimes we drag our children around town with us thinking it is good for them, or we dose them with pain relievers to keep our “plans” in order to remain an active part of society. Illness is precisely the time when children should be home. During the first seven years of age, children are developing their root chakra (energy center), located at the base of the spine. This chakra represents grounding, home life, security, rooting through breastfeeding, food and procreation. Children need to feel secure in their environment; to feel the safety of their homes and those loving caregivers within it. Fun activities and play dates are also a must for a growing child’s development, but do these activities when your child is strong and healthy. Listen to your child and respect their desires, when reasonable. They know what their bodies need. Dr. Sears has a great website with a resource guide on specific childhood diseases at www.askdrsears.com. See a doctor if symptoms don’t subside or if you need the peace of mind. Please avoid antibiotics and anti-inflammatories if possible. l

5. Echinacea Tincture There is a spray tincture with natural flavors for kids. It keeps the kids healthy if administered a couple times a week during cold and flu season. During an illness, I administer the recommended dose twice a day which aids the child in recovering quicker as their own natural immunities are boosted.

6. Orange Juice Popsicles A yummy way to receive Vitamin C and it also soothes a sore throat. www.tampabaywellness.com

The Body

ALL year long

by Ashley Poptodorova

I

f you are like me – you love the Holidays! The cool crisp air, the Holiday lights and the excitement in a child’s eyes! The Holidays are a time for joyful giving, love and laughter!

With each Holiday season there are routines. You pull the boxes down out of the attic… most of you probably have them labeled. You have your routine for putting up the lights and you plan your Christmas shopping around Black Friday and special Holiday sales. These habits are ingrained in us. Have you ever thought about how these things have become so ingrained? They are habits which are

repeated year after year. Each year you may make modifications and minor tweaks.

Resolutions all year long!

The same routines, habits and ways can be applied to setting your New Years resolutions. All too often it becomes commonplace to set Resolutions and a few months into the New Year you let them go.

to not generalize. Get as specific and detailed as possible. You should be able to visualize your goal. How do you want to look and feel? What kind of energy do you want to have? What will this newfound energy enable you to do?

Why is this? In my time spent in the health and wellness field I have found several key factors that play a part in the letting go of resolutions. I would like to share these simple concepts and practical ways of sticking to your New Years

BE SPECIFIC – A key to setting resolutions is

Don’t just resolve to “Get Healthy” – rather, resolve that this year you will “Lose 10 pounds and gain extra energy” You must think, ACT, and visualize yourself as the person you want to be!

WRITE IT DOWN – What gets written down gets

measured. You can SEE the promises you make to yourself, you can SEE your goals. Most of us do not even realize it but we are very visual! Start with writing your very specific goals and resolutions and posting them in several places. My suggestion is the refrigerator, the car, the office. Any place that you frequent needs to have your resolutions posted. Writing also works very well for tracking things such as your exercise and nutrition. It will motivate and inspire you to look back and see how far you have come! This increases your ability to stick to your resolutions throughout the year. When I decided to lose weight ( I was formerly 208 pounds) I wrote down everything. I had a journal I wrote in every day. I noticed a significant difference in the days that I wrote things down over the days that I did not.

INCREASE ACCOUNTABILITY - Being held accountable is among one of the most important things needed when striving for a specific goal or resolution. Being a fitness professional I see those individuals every day who need help with accountability. It is too easy to let things go to the wayside otherwise. Employ the help of your friends and family members by making sure that they know of your New Years Resolutions. Ask them to hold you accountable by encouraging you and following up with your progress. This little bit of support and

www.tampabaywellness.com

motivation will work wonders in you sticking to these set resolutions. I remember the first time someone told me I was an inspiration to them. Little did they know how much that meant to me. It kept me going. Knowing that others are looking to you, or counting on you helps you to stick with it!

SET FUN RESOLUTIONS TOO! – I love fun

things! Life is not all about stressing out and overworking ourselves. While we all may have some very serious resolutions on this years list – it is key to remember the FUN things! Try committing to see a friend at least once per week. What are your hobbies or interests? Commit to doing so much of this during the year. Be very detailed in your time spent doing such things. I will commit to practicing my golf swing for one hour every week… or , if you love to write like I do : I will commit to writing at least two full hours every week. By ensuring that you include the FUN things – it will make the serious resolutions that much easier!

ASK FOR HELP – DO NOT BE AFRAID TO

ASK FOR HELP. Whoever says that asking for help is bad – well they probably need LOTS of it! If you feel like you are losing your way or you need extra motivation – call on a friend or family member to join you in your resolutions.

Explain to them that it is difficult for you to keep going and talk about it. We are all intricately interwoven much more than we think. The human race is one which needs the support and help of each other. If you are reaching for a specific health or fitness goal – reach out to professionals (such as myself, just sayin’) to help design a protocol and plan to help see you through. It is OK to ask for help. You will soon see that you reach your goals and then it is others asking for YOUR help! This is a guide to sticking to New Years Resolutions all year long – I have personally used these strategies myself in my own fitness journey. I know that they work because they have been tried and tested not only on myself but on our many clients. I employ these techniques every day of the year. It is so exciting to master reaching goals and setting new ones! I am pleased to have this fabulous opportunity to share with you. Reach out if you need anything. I would love to hear your thoughts and feedback on how these techniques helped you. Here is to a HAPPY and HEALHTY 2011 for ALL! l ~Ashley Poptodorova www.aapfitness.com 813-907-6AAP

A

mericans have become known world-wide as the fattest and among the unhealthiest people in the world. This seems like a contradiction since we have one the most elaborate health care systems with the coolest technology. There seems to be a problem somewhere: in researching this for the past thirty years, I have uncovered a common denominator, and it appears to be hiding right in front of us. In order to fully understand how this can be, it’s important to understand something. What we’ve been doing about the weight epidemic hasn’t been working.

There is confusion about what it means to be healthy, how to eat healthy, and how to make the best food choice. Then there’s the issue of how to evaluate all of the information that we are inundated with when researching health and disease on the internet. How do we know who to trust for the right answers? Is there a one size fits all? Why do some things work for some people and not others? Why do diets from other cultures work for them and not in America? Is there a deeper problem we are missing?

Quick-fix solutions are a very popular and demanded by the average American. We want results now, even yesterday; even though we’ve had the problem for years. Unfortunately, this type of thinking is not only short-sighted and irresponsible, it often worsens the problem. Think about it. It took YEARS to put on the weight, or develop the illness. In fact, most people who suffer with chronic health issues, or are just starting to feel old (at the age of 40 or 50) are really just manifesting years of eating poor quality food! Think about it. Many of us were raised with fast food, or boxed food, or canned food or premade food, or processed food, and all are laden with food chemicals. They are called preservatives or additives, and give that food item a long shelf life and the ability to ship it across thousands of miles.

Tired of Yo-Yo Dieting? Stubborn Weight Solution

Discovered!

In researching the answers to these questions, I discovered an amazing and profound common denominator. This appears to be the cause of many of our stubborn and seemingly unsolvable weight and illness problems.

Failure in gaining control of this problem has become more and more prevalent. This is why we yo-yo with our weight, our health and our eating behavior. It should make you wonder, why us? We try to eat a” healthy diet,” and there are many of them! There’s the low-fat diet; then we try a high- fat diet; or low carb; vegetarian, vegan; we calorie count; point count; take or apply hormones; take fat-blockers; have surgical procedures; inject vitamins; use detox programs; swallow vitamins; try a variety of things like acupuncture and other alternative health care modalities; and still we go up and down. For those of us, like me, who have a genetic history of obesity, cancer and diabetes, it’s even harder. At some point in time, we just decide to give up and deal with the consequences we know eventually are coming, but not today – since today we “feel fine.” 20 JANUARY 2011 • Tampa Bay Wellness

Chemicals and technology were introduced into our food supply forty plus years ago, after WWII. Since then, our health costs have risen, and weight and chronic illness and disabilities and immune problems ALL have risen, significantly. Our children are sick and medicated, and our over-weight and obesity numbers have risen to three-quarters of the population! Look around you, you see it everywhere!

The food in the USA is adulterated. [adulterate: verb (used with object) -- 1. to debase or make impure by adding inferior materials or elements; use cheaper, inferior, or less desirable goods in the production of (any professedly genuine article): to adulterate food.] Think about it. It explains everything. If you understand what the word “food” really means, and really understand food’s purpose, it’s become clear this is a huge problem. This would explain why different types of diets work in other countries and cultures and not ours. If you look deeper at the issue of quality, rather than type, everything else starts to fall into place.

Even our “conventionally grown” fresh produce or farm fresh eggs are often tainted. Pesticides, fungicides, insecticides or herbicides are sprayed and these poisons get absorbed through the root system; the chicken feed is laced with antibiotics and include things not typically found in a chicken’s natural diet, like corn and soy. This is just standard practice for modern farming.

If you think about the concept “you are what you eat” most of us are in BIG trouble. Even when we try to eat right - we order that grilled chicken caesar salad and think, “I’m eating healthy.” The reality is, we are being deceived. That meal is only healthy if the ingredients have been farmed without the use of chemicals, genetically modified seeds, antibiotics, hormones or cloning (yes cloning!), and the salad dressing isn’t laced with high fructose corn syrup, MSG, soybean oil, and other chemicals and additives. This is the common denominator. Illness is on the rise; across the board, chronic disease is increasing at epidemic numbers. If you look at how we define health, the standards are pretty low. “I’m healthy except for the vomiting after I eat” and “I’m healthy except for the cancer last year;” and “I’m healthy other than the two heart attacks I had;” were an actual statements from real live people. Amazing. I am just speechless at the lack of awareness that seems to abound in our society. Why have our health standards www.tampabaywellness.com

dropped so low? Since when are you healthy if you take drugs everyday to function? In looking at this a little closer, I realized there is a connection between the chemicals in our food supply, the way we carry fat, and our hormone health. If you look at how people carry weight, you’ll notice it’s not all the same. Some carry it around their waists; some as a “pot-belly;” some in their hips; and some all over. This difference in how someone carries their weight is directly related to a corresponding internal organ or gland. As an example, women who carry more weight around their hips have a tendency towards ovary and uterus hormone communication problems. These problems need to be addressed in order to achieve sustained weight loss and optimal health. Oriental Medicine is a practice of medicine that can naturally, without the use of chemicals or dangerous procedures, treat functional problems in the body. With regards to weight loss and chronic illnesses, utilizing various modalities becomes a necessity. For the chronic weight problem that is rooted in a functional imbalance, specialized acupressure and acupuncture techniques are used to correct hormone communication lines that have been damaged by decades of toxicity (hormones carry messages from one part of the body to another through the blood). Food chemicals in the form of additives, spices, flavor enhancers, herbicides, pesticides, fungicides, insecticides, things you cannot pronounce or identify, have all negatively impacted our health. I have found that education can create a behavioral change that becomes a long-term lifestyle shift This is why I offer an educational program and eating guidelines as part of our treatment plan. Depending upon the person’s specific needs and health goals, treatment and recommendations can vary. It’s not "one size fits all,” but an individualized plan to achieve a particular health goal, which is based on that person’s root problem. If you are tired of the yo-yo dieting, have a stubborn weight issue, struggle with a chronic illness or just don’t feel like yourself anymore, you may be ready for a more extreme program that can “rock” your world. Check out a free class, it may just be your time to recreate the body you’ve always wanted. l

Yoga Pose Chakrasana

(aka Urdhva Dhanurasana) Chakra=Wheel Asana=Pose “You are only as young as your spine is flexible!” is a wonderful phrase being tossed around lately in the media. As you might deduce, adding Chakrasana to your regular yoga practice will help keep you young! Although the names Chakrasana and Urdhva Dhanurasana (Upward Bow) are used fairly interchangeably for this pose, Chakrasana more closely envelopes the depth and meaning originally associated with it. Physically, the spine is in a position that looks rounded like a circle or a wheel. But energetically-speaking, the seven major energy centers of your body located along the spine, which are called Chakras (or wheels), are spinning and activating in this pose. While there are many back bending postures in yoga, Wheel Pose is one of the few that activates all seven Chakras at the same time, hence the name “Chakrasana”. Warm up to Wheel Pose. Physically and mentally challenging, it is important to warm up before moving into this posture. This is an intermediate/advanced asana. It is best to begin working with Chakrasana under the supervision of a yoga teacher. Other postures can be sequenced together to warm up before moving into a full expression of Wheel, which include Bitilasana (Cat), Dhanurasana (Bow), Ustrasana (Camel), and Setu Bandha Sarvangasana (Bridge). These poses warm up the shoulders, hips and spine opening the body in preparation for Wheel. Wheels…go round and round. Just like the wheels on the bus going round and round, all seven Chakras (or wheels) start spinning stronger and become very active in this posture. If you hold the posture for several breaths or a couple of minutes, when you lower down you feel an amazing increase of vibrations in the spine. After Chakrasana, lying on your back with eyes closed, bring your awareness to your energy centers and you might just feel the increased activation of your very own Chakras. Benefits of Chakrasana 1. Strengthens the Whole Body (wrists, arms, shoulders, ankles, legs, hips, glutes, spine) 2. Activates All Seven Chakras (or Energy Centers)

3. Massages the internal organs and adrenal glands Contraindications Back, head, or shoulder injuries or sensitivity Begin lying on your back (supine). Bring the heels close to your sitting bones. Bring the palms of the hands next to the ears with forearms perpendicular to the earth. Inhale deeply. With hands at shoulder width and feet at hip width apart, firmly press the hands and feet evenly into the earth. Always move with the breath, exhale as you lift your core reaching your front body toward the sky. Place a block between the knees to help properly engage the legs. With the head relaxed between the arms, the body takes on a semi-circle shape, which is supported by the legs and arms. Hold this pose for as many relaxed breaths as you can (increasing the number of breaths each time you come up into the pose). Use your Ujjayi breath. Lower down from the back of the head to the sacrum. Rest, and then repeat at least three times. Hug your knees into the chest to release lengthen the lower back muscles. Relax with back flat on the earth, and enjoy the new vibrations in the spine. Chakrasana is more challenging than many postures, so do not be discouraged if you need to develop strength for the pose. Just attempting the posture without getting into a full wheel provides many benefits and begins to open the body. Later, you can deepen the challenge by working towards the extremely deep backbend of Kapotasana (King Pigeon Pose), or as one of my wise teachers used to say, “Give your yoga a future!” Jeanette Just is a Tampa native. She has been practicing yoga for over seventeen years, teaching Reiki and Yoga for several years now, and is currently the Wellness Manager at Raydiance Wellness Center. Transitioning from a twenty-year career as a paralegal, Jeanette recognized the need in today’s society to find better ways to deal with the stresses of daily life. While others turned to MDs and RXs, she chose Yoga, Reiki Acupuncture, and a new way of life. She is enthusiastic about being a part of expanding the ongoing fusion of Eastern and Western healing practices, and perhaps one day opening her own Wellness Center. What is Laser Therapy for What is a Therapeutic Laser for Pain? Therapeutic Lasers deliver a concentrated beam of light (photons of light), in a specific wave length that causes an immediate biological stimulation (healing) to the human cells, tissue, muscles, bones, blood circulation, lymph … a patient will feel less pain even after one treatment. The Therapeutic Lasers are widely used by Acupuncturists, Chiropractors, Physical Therapists and Veterinarians. (especially on horses) Therapeutic Lasers have a healing property which does not increase the skin temperature nor burn it. Most of the time the patient will not feel anything during the therapy. But they will experience less pain after just one treatment ! Note ! Lasers used in eye surgeries or for dermatology are NOT therapeutic Lasers.

Briefly, what are the benefits of Laser therapy ? In the applied area it will reduce pain quickly, accelerate healing and will rapidly reduce inflammation. Laser therapy is a drug-free treatment option and in some cases an alternative to surgery.

What are the biological effects? Decreases pain & anti-inflammatory Increased cell metabolism • Stimulated cell growth & regeneration • Increased tissue repair • Edema reduction Improves vascular & lymph activity • Reduced fibrous tissue formation • Stimulated nerve function • Collagen deposition

L A SE R T HE R A P Y FO R P A I N How effective is it? It is highly effective. Even from the first treatment a patient should feel (on average) 20%-30% less pain. With each subsequent treatment the pain level will be further reduced producing a lasting effect. For example, severe low back muscle spasms can be resolved with one or two treatments. Sinus problems respond quickly to the Laser. On the other hand, due to the complexity of the Rotator cuff, it may require more than 5 treatments to achieve 70% pain reduction in this area.

Is it safe? It is an extremely safe therapy that is both non-toxic and non-invasive. Since its use in Europe and Asia for the last 30 yrs there has not been any Clinical reports of side effects. Some Therapeutic Lasers are approved by the FDA. Therapeutic Laser’s should not be shined to the eyes or aimed at pace makers.

What conditions are treated? Many conditions can be treated producing excellent results. • Pain in neck, back, knees, feet, hands • Musculoskeletal Pain • Soft Tissue Injuries • Arthritis & other inflammations • Plantar Fasciitis

• TMJ / Bells Palsy • Bursitis / Tendonitis • Tennis / Golf Elbow • Neuropathy • Sciatica • Carpal Tunnel • Sports Injuries • Sprain / Strain • Post Surgeries (speeds up healing)

scientifically documented?

Why haven’t we heard of this before?

90% of the time the patient will feel less pain right after the 1st treatment. With each subsequent treatment the pain level will be further reduced producing a lasting effect.

There’s no billing code for Laser therapy, so a Medical professional cannot bill the Insurance company. As a result, the medical community does not want to promote a product that the patient has to pay out of pocket. Furthermore, it has only been 7 years since the FDA has cleared the way for the use of Therapeutic Lasers.

Where can we get laser therapy ? In the Tampa Bay area you can get therapy from various health care professionals such as: Acupuncturists, Chiropractors, MD's, Physical Therapists and Vets(for your pets)

Is laser therapy

Yes. There are more than 100 double-blind positive studies confirming the clinical effect of therapeutic Laser. More than 2500 research reports have been published in the last 30 years.

How long before I start to feel results?

How long will a treatment take? The Laser is passed in the effected area for about 15-30 minutes.

Will I feel anything? does it hurt? The patient will not feel a thing. Some patients do say that they feel the muscle tension reduction while the Laser is applied.

What is the cost of a treatment? One treatment can range from $65-$90

How To Clear & Detoxify

A

ll crystals are extremely efficient, natural amplifiers. That is why they are integral components of turntables, watches and computers. For thousands of years crystals have been used for healing purposes as well, and for the exact same reason modern technology uses them: they amplify energy. If you come in contact with a crystal for any reason, it will amplify your energy. It doesn’t matter if you are touching it for healing, wearing it as a piece of jewelry or just admiring it.

Crystals also retain some of the energy they are exposed to. Every person who has ever been in physical contact with that crystal, from the mining process, to the cutting and polishing, to the retailers who sold the crystal and everyone in between, has added their energy to the amplification mix. When crystals are used in healing, one of the primary issues has always been how to “clean” a crystal of all of this retained energy. Why might that be a problem you might ask? Because the crystal is now amplifying everyone’s energy that has ever touched it, and that may not be healthy, balancing or appropriate to keep in your house, around your neck, on your finger or in your healing room. Let’s say you inherited some jewelry from your Auntie Em in Kansas: a lovely diamond ring, an opal necklace and an amethyst bracelet. As you are admiring the passed on articles, you cannot help but remember what a nasty, mean-spirited, judgmental person Aunt Em was. Her energy is still in that jewelry; it did not die with her. When 24 JANUARY 2011 • Tampa Bay Wellness

has found a new home. Crystals continue to store and accumulate all the energy they have ever been exposed to until they are cleared.

you wear that jewelry it has an amplified energetic effect on your life. If you picked up some great deals at an estate sale, you probably have no idea if the pervious owner(s) had a nasty personality, or suffered from a long-term illness such as cancer, or possibly died traumatically while wearing some the very same items now in your possession. Any of these circumstances could have an adverse effect of your health. Amplified energy does not live in a vacuum. It does not neutralize itself automatically simply because the mineral

In the same manner that you would never consider wearing or adding a garment to your wardrobe that someone else had worn for many years without washing it first, the same applies to crystals. Every new gem, mineral or fossil you acquire needs to be cleared of the energy imprint made on it by the previous owner(s) and anyone who has ever touched or handled that stone. There are many commonly used methods to energetically clean a crystal: covering it with salt, or salt water, burying it in the ground, placing it in the sunlight or moonlight, or smudging it, otherwise known as surrounding it with the smoke of burning sage. However Indian Ayurvedic wisdom says that none of these methods is actually proficient in neutralizing all the energy any crystal has picked up and stored. The Ayurvedic, timehonored method of clearing any stone is to place it in a container and cover it with organic, whole milk. You can place more than one item in a container before covering with milk, As long as all the items to be cleared are thoroughly and completely submerged in the milk. Remember, the gems and minerals are not on a fat-free diet. You want to use whole organic milk for the best cleansing results. After covering the items to be cleared with milk, let them sit for twenty-four hours. Then wash off the items and place them in a clean www.tampabaywellness.com

container and cover with milk again. Repeat the process for a total of three full days. On the third day thoroughly rinse the milk off the stones and dry them completely. You will find the gems and minerals are now not only cleared energetically but also have an enhanced dazzling quality of brilliance. Unless you have submerged a very intricately detailed piece of sterling silver, with lots of little crevices, you will also find that your entire jewelry item is brighter and lovelier than ever. Also be careful not to soak items strung on silk or string, as the milk over the three-day soak will start to disintegrate the cord. It does not matter if you leave the soaking stones in or out of the refrigerator over the three-day period. What is important is that you make sure that no animals, such as a cat or dog, drink the milk containing detoxified energy from the stones. So if you have to, place the container in the fridge to make sure your pet does not have access to the toxic milk. Also make sure the used milk is completely washed down the drain and not reused. The best time to clean any gem, mineral or fossil is immediately after it comes into your possession. If you use crystals or stones for healing, such as a hot stone massage, it is best to soak that crystal or stone in milk for three days before using on another person. Also remember anytime someone else handles your gems and minerals it now has their energy in the mineral. So if you loan out your jewelry, be sure to soak it in milk for three days when you get it back. If people are shaking your hand and your rings and bracelets come into contact with others, you may want to cleanse your jewelry once a month. There is no limit to how www.tampabaywellness.com

many times you can cleanse a crystal, or how many crystals you can clear at one time, as long as the milk completely covers every gem and mineral.

Over the years I have maintained this practice, it never fails to astound me how dramatically brighter and oftentimes clearer a stone can become after soaking in milk for three days. It is simple, cost effective and the results are well worth the time and the effort. It is energetically the perfect way to love and protect your gems and minerals as much as they love and enhance your life. l
