We don’t offer a quick fix or a miracle cure. Our proven system of individual behavioral counseling, hypnotherapy and nutrition counseling provides a permanent solution to yo-yo dieting, binge eating, over eating, and poor food choices. Through our caring approach, clients make slow, steady changes to their thought processes. This changes how they respond to life, what comes into their lives, and, ultimately, the way they approach food.

 I overeat certain types of food.  I overeat when I’m angry or depressed.  I overeat when I’m tired or stressed.  I overeat to comfort or reward myself.  I eat when I’m bored.  Food is the first thing on my mind after work or daily activities.

 If I have just a bite of certain foods, my eating may go out of control.

 I get extremely hungry for no reason.  After I lose weight and get positive attention, I start regaining the weight.

 I want to lose weight to please people who are important in my life.

 I fear that I will never lose my excess weight.

 I feel bad about my weight, like I have failed.

 I would like to be a stronger, more

confident person.

If you relate to any of the above... Have you tried every diet out there or at least it feels like it? summer's almost over and you’re wondering what your game plan is to finally get this weight off your body? I can recall many, many years of making the same decision to fight. I’d tell myself, “ This time I’m going to go on a special diet, I will exercise, and I will lose the weight—and keep it off .” I’d launch into the latest diet craze involving starving, or only eating certain foods, or taking dozens of supplement pills every day, or sometimes all three. It was usually some sort of routine that was sheer punishment.

Andrea Crouch www.tampabaywellness.com

Sure enough, I’d lose weight, but then I’d start to feel stressed and oppressed by the strict regimen and would go back to my good old friend—food. It was positively draining each time I’d have to start all over with a new diet. Sound familiar? I used to gain and lose the same weight over and over again, but now I’ve lost the extra pounds and maintained the same weight for over 10 years! By this time next year, you could be just like the many Hungry Heart clients who are living healthy lifestyles, have learned how to take good care of themselves and no longer turn to food to deal with what is emotionally going on in their life.

Give us a call and we’ll personalize a program for you and you can resolve to paint the bedroom instead of dieting! Mention Tampa Bay Wellness to receive your free consultation with a Hungry Heart Counselor. To find out more about The Hungry Heart, or to schedule a consultation:

Hungry Heart clients no longer deal with the internal struggle and self-sabotage of dieting and binging, or make poor food choices. They’ve learned to eat when they’re hungry, stop when they’re satisfied, and handle life and their emotions completely independently. Tampa Bay Wellness • AUGUST 2010 7

Working in the fitness industry at a young age, I began teaching classes and learning everything and anything about nutrition and exercise which gave me the opportunity to help o thers in the gym and it carried on into high school and college activities. Have you ever had any health or weight problems?

What are your personal fitness goals?

Unfortunately, I have been through phases where working out and healthy eating was not part of my life. At these times I felt like crap, had no energy, often became sick and my weight skyrocketed! I’m not naturally skinny! Just like most people, I have to work at it every day.

Nutrition is a major part of health. Tell us how you eat, and what you eat on a daily basis. Nutrition is one of the most important components in my life. When I’m in season preparing for a show my diet consist of 8 small meals per day and a whole gallon of water. These small meals include protein such as egg whites, chicken, orange roughy and London broil. I will eat 2-3 servings of vegetables 1-2 servings of a complex carbohydrate such as a potato, rice or oatmeal per day.

Tampa Bay Wellness • AUGUST 2010 13

JuliaZammito When I’m off season I will eat 5-6 small meals per day and cut down on my protein intake. My diet is always clean which means I never eat processed foods. Being off season I can play around with all kinds of yummy ingredients and love inventing new recipes to share with my clients. It’s all about knowing what’s out there to eat and eating pure wholesome foods that taste amazing and make you feel amazing! Is supplementation something everyone should do? What about vitamins? This can be a very controversial subject. When it comes to supplementation I would recommend incorporating a high quality (preferably organic) protein powder. Your body needs certain nutritional elements to help it work correctly. The primary forces here are indeed the vitamins & minerals that you give it. If you follow a balanced diet, all the vitamins necessary for health are in the balanced diet. But, if you feel that your diet doesn't do this for you then you may also want to look at high quality vitamin supplements. How often do you work out? How often should the average person work out? My training schedule is more demanding when preparing for a show- workouts can be anywhere from 2-4 times per day 5-6 days a week. However right now I train 3-5 days per week. The consistency and duration of your workouts is a major factor in achieving your fitness goals. The 14 AUGUST 2010 • Tampa Bay Wellness

average person should workout 3-6 days per week depending on their goals, demographics and schedule. Everyone can find 1 hour a day to work out! Tell us about your lifting routine. Your cardio routine. Right now my workouts consist of high intensity interval training and calisthenics which allows me to hit every muscle group in the body and keep my heart rate up. We do this kind of training at Boot Camp- it’s very effective in burning fat and building lean muscle. With interval training the sky is the limit with the kind of exercises you can throw into your routine- It definitely switches things up so you never get bored! With interval training and a clean diet I do not have to do a lot of cardio. I will jump on the elliptical or treadmill 2-3 times per week but prefer to do my cardio outdoors. Not to get to personal, but can you tell us how old you are, your height, weight, measurements and body fat composition? 26 years old, 5’0 and 112 lbs. off season 95 lbs. on season Is body fat the best indicator of fitness? Does it change with age? Measuring body fat is a great indicator of fitness because it directly calculates the individual’s body composition without regard to their height or weight.

Local Buisness Owner & Health Enthusiast You want to replace body fat with lean tissue mass however, lean muscle weighs more than body fat which will have an effect on the scale- but you will be shrinking. I like to incorporate several types of assessments including weight, body fat and measurements which allow you to thoroughly see your progress. What do you tell sedentary people who are looking to start exercising? Often people just need the tools necessary to begin and maintain a fitness program. Find a local personal trainer for guidance or group fitness class. Having a workout program that fits into your daily life is key but staying accountable and motivated is critical. It only takes 21 days to form a habit- Get in a routine of working out either on a daily basis or on certain days in the week. Create short-term goals and constantly remind yourself of WHY you need to exercise. What's different for a person who is looking to get into body competitions? Doing a competition is very rewarding and empowering. You want to know ahead of time that contest prep will take time, discipline and 100% focus. It’s a lot of work but an amazing experience! Boot Camps seem to be the rage. What is the difference between a Boot Camp and a regular exercise regimen? And what makes them popular? Fitness Boot Camps are exploding for one big reason: They deliver fantastic body changing results faster than any other method. Boot Camp workouts are www.tampabaywellness.com

energetic, simple, quick and FUN! You get amazing results, regardless of your age or fitness history. Boot Camps deliver the same benefits of working with a personal trainer including expert guidance, coaching and support at an affordable rate. Our Boot Camps are held on the beach where you burn 30-40% more calories in the sand all while getting lost in the beautiful surroundings. We keep everyone accountable by having our participants fill out a goals sheet and do fitness assessments at the beginning of every series and reassessments at the end of four weeks. If we don’t see you at Boot Camp don’t be surprised if you get a phone call or email the next day! Every day at Boot Camp is different- We never do the same workout twice so your body won’t adapt to the training. We spend a lot of time working with our Boot Campers on both nutrition & exercise components to ensure they get serious results. Ongoing grocery store tours, nutrition seminars, food journal checks, weekly recipes and exercise homework are provided.

Vitamins & Supplements For Enhancing The Immune System

Y

ou may be an extremely healthy person already, and chances are you take pretty good care of yourself (or at least you are willing to start) if you are reading this article. Smart lifestyle choices can make a huge difference in your ability to stay strong and healthy. But even the healthiest among us are not always able to fight off every little bug that comes down the pike. With the changing of the seasons and added stresses in our lives as summer comes to a close, we all could use a little boost to our immune system. There are so many wonderful, natural supplements out there that are available at our local health food and grocery stores. You may not know about all of the options you have, so lets look at them more closely.

Mushroom Supplements One immunity booster that has become extremely popular is derived from a delicious food mushrooms. Specifically, the mushroom species shiitake and maitake are very effective remedies for the immune system. They have even been recommended by doctors in the medical community as well as the alternative health fields for cancer patients. This is because these mushrooms are thought to boost immune system response and increase the production of antibodies, as well as slow down the activity of free radicals in the body. This is of utmost import for cancer patients, but it is also beneficial for those of us who do not suffer from this disease. People with autoimmune deficiency diseases such as AIDS or cancer are not the only people who benefit from an enhanced immune system. A healthy, well-functioning immune system is what keeps us from getting sick, and also helps us to feel our best on a daily basis, even if we are free from any serious disease.

Zinc Supplements Zinc is a mineral that has become popular in many different forms to treat the common cold. While it is an essential mineral, and you can get zinc from food sources such as beans, seafood, dairy and nuts, the Food and Drug Administration has realized how important zinc is and has required it to be added to other foods such as grains, breads and cereals. Most of the high-level zinc foods are found in certain seafood, such as oysters and crab, which some people do not wish to eat. Therefore, some of our more popular carbohydrates have been fortified with zinc by the product manufacturer.

16 AUGUST 2010 • Tampa Bay Wellness

An even easier way to make sure you get your zinc is to buy a daily supplement. You can take it in pill form or a lozenge. That way you can avoid foods that dont appeal to you. If you take a 10 mg per day dosage, this should do the trick for warding off the common cold and helping your immune system.

Echinacea Supplements Echinacea is another great immune system enhancer. This is an herb, and although its popularity has really just increased in the last ten years or so, it has actually been used for medicinal purposes in this country and others for over a century. Its harvesting has become so popular, in fact, that some states are considering making the plant an endangered species. Although many people start to use Echinacea when they feel themselves becoming run down or sick, the best way to take Echinacea is to do so preventatively. Especially during the winter months, it is a wonderful supplement to prevent cold and flu. Echinacea is sometimes found in a compound that includes another herb called goldenseal. This combination can do wonders to fortify the immune system.

Green Tea Supplements A pleasant and tasty way to boost your immune system is to drink plenty of green tea. Green tea is fantastic for your immune system, and can even promote calmness and relaxation while increasing your metabolism. It contains antioxidants called polyphenols and catechins, which help to improve the overall health of the body. Beneficial polyphenols similar to these are found in other sources such as red wine, but obviously red wine should not be consumed as freely as green tea, which you can drink all day long if you choose. One of the reasons green tea is calming is that it contains an amino acid called theanine, which helps to counteract the effect of the caffeine on the nervous system. If you choose to purchase a green tea supplement in capsule form instead, you look for one that provides about 200 mg of polyphenols per capsule or dose. In a day and age where we are exposed to many free radicals and pollutants in our environment, it is a great comfort to know that a more efficient, better immune system is really only a supplement or two away. l Article Source: http://www.articlesnatch.com

The Body

An Introduction to

Tai Yoga Massage Our author visits Thailand in search of the ultimate in therapeutic massage

By A.J. Gonzalez

O

ver 2500 years ago a healing art originated that has become more popular in recent years; today it is called Thai Yoga massage. Begun by Dr. Shivaga Homar Bhucca, it provided service not only to Buddhist monks who sat for long periods of time in meditation, but to Buddha as well. The monks eventually migrated to Sri Lanka, Laos, Cambodia, Burma and Thailand, bringing their knowledge with them. Originating in India, Thai Yoga Massage has roots in Ayurvedic Medicine, Yoga and Eastern Philosophy. This combination is known as Nuad Bo' Rarn or "Ancient Healing Touch." This form of bodywork is usually performed on the floor, and the client wears comfortable clothes that allow for movement. No oils or lotions are used in Thai massage. Having the opportunity to study Thai Massage in Thailand I learned how respected and revered the art is culturally. I was deeply submerged into the art while staying in the jungles of southern Thailand; with the oldest evergreen rainforest on earth behind me and beautiful limestone mountains with deep valleys and caves in front, it was easy to let go and grow in the experience. A floating bamboo sala built on a lake became my home while studying, and a kayak was the main source of transportation. The source of light at night was candle or battery powered as very little electricity was available. Small light bulbs hovering over the doorway to each bamboo bungalow acted as a guide at night, but only for a short time. Gibbons and other monkeys and wildlife became my nighttime music as the moon rose above the mountains and lit up the water.

The environment I was in helped facilitate a very focused and clear mind. I could feel myself release the grip on stressful thinking as I trained daily in yoga, massage and meditation. I feel whatever beauty or inspiration we discover wherever we are, we bring ourselves; but the task from this experience was in taking my practice, and what I learned while studying in Thailand, and have them coalesce. In each massage session I create a relaxing and nurturing space that helps silence that internal dialogue and open a client to the flow of movement and stretching. Once experienced, you will understand why this ancient art is a very practical and enjoyable way to maintain relaxation and health in our modern times. Thai Massage is based on a wholistic approach to health, bringing awareness to the interconnectedness of the entire body. We are engendered with a minor awareness of the body, and some who experience massage will discover tight areas of the body once the massage begins. To stand, move, function daily and even live with gravity we need a certain amount of tension in the body, but we can unconsciously hold tension because of past injuries, alignment problems or even emotional trauma. Thai Massage is gaining momentum today because of its many benefits, particularly the effect it has on muscle flexibility. When we become tense our muscles shorten, even if we don't mean to contract them. This can happen because of overuse, underuse or even emotional tension. Eventually we become restricted in even our basic movements due to our short muscles. We experience stiffness, aches and pains and discomfort in daily actions. Soon

simple ranges of motion and movements we've taken for granted are not longer ordinary as our pain becomes normal. This art is a wonderful way to wake the body and realize the limited motion and pain we experience is a check engine light trying to get our attention. A traditional Thai Yoga Massage session incorporates passive stretching and gentle pressure. Our muscles begin to relax with each stretch, our motions become more fluid and our sensation increases with each posture held. It is an art that can fit to your desired goal because it focuses on magnifying what you can accomplish with your body, not what you can't. At the end of the session the client lies in shavasana, relaxing and letting the nervous system calm and the body integrate the experience. Self compassion and understanding the limit of our body and mind play a big role in stress reduction and muscle relaxation. We each in some way contribute to the well being of others, and it is important to come from a grounded and focused state of mind when providing massage. Over time, massage therapists can begin to see people as a body; muscles and patterns of tension and stress, forgetting the individual. Every time we make contact with a client, we are not simply touching soft tissue; we are interacting with a deep history. All the things a person has experienced, the dreams they create, emotions they express and beliefs they hold shape every aspect of their body from the function of each cell to posture and digestion. There is life in every cell of the body and memory as well. This awareness is important when creating an atmosphere for the client to relax and begin opening up

the closed spaces of the body. You don't have to believe in "energy" or any kind of philosophy to simply feel when someone is stressed out or anxious. Nobody wants the emotional debris and overwhelming issues that sometimes orbit individuals transferring to them during a massage session. A great deal of training in Thai Massage is self presence for the sake of servicing others. Client education is a contributing factor in the success of my practice. I enjoy sitting with clients and including them in the details I discover while working with them, and often give “homework that a client can do at home to help them achieve their goal. The truth is even if a client were to receive a massage daily, the majority of the day their body is in their hands. Having a practice to incorporate at home will compliment and accelerate the benefits of massage. There are endless avenues to explore with complimentary healing and bodywork,

but Thai Yoga Massage resonated with me because of the mindfulness of the practice. Like Taijiquan that cultivates concentration with movements of the body and meditation that centers the mind I have come to understand the value of practices that develop focus and awareness. In this way I feel Thai Yoga Massage greatly differs from other modalities of massage. When I am performing Thai Yoga Massage I am actually practicing yoga, dancing and meditating while keeping nonverbal communication with my client. The repeating patterns of movements, breath awareness and rhythm helps me manifest a state of mind that is meditative. The mindfulness of this art helps me find a conscious state of compassion, joy and equanimity. Each of us will experience and benefit from this art in different ways. We each have our own individual road to walk towards health, happiness and harmony. Thai Yoga Massage is a path on the road and has many benefits for you waiting to be explored.

folic acid?

•You are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant. Pregnant women need 400 to 800 mcg of folic acid in the very early stages of pregnancy often before they know that they are pregnant. A pregnant woman should keep taking folic acid throughout pregnancy. Women should discuss their folic acid needs with their doctors. Some doctors prescribe prenatal vitamins that contain higher amounts of folic acid. •You are breastfeeding. Breastfeeding women need 500 mcg. Some doctors suggest that breastfeeding women keep taking their prenatal vitamins to be sure they are getting plenty of folic acid while they are breastfeeding and should they become pregnant again. •You had a baby with a birth defect of the brain or spine and want to get pregnant again. Your doctor may give you a prescription for 4,000 mcg of folic acid. That is 10 times the normal dose. Taking this high dose of folic acid can lower the risk of having another baby with these birth defects.

I don’t plan on getting pregnant right now, and I am using birth control. Do I still need folic acid? Yes! Birth defects of the brain and spine happen in the very early stages of pregnancy, often before a woman knows she is pregnant. By the time she finds out she is pregnant, it might be too late to prevent those birth defects. Also, half of all pregnancies in the United States are not planned. For these reasons, all women who are able to get pregnant need 400 to 800 mcg of folic acid every day.

What is it? What is folic acid? Folic (FOH-lik) acid is a B vitamin. It helps the body make healthy new cells. “Folic acid” and “folate” mean the same thing. Folic acid is a manmade form of folate. Folate is found naturally in some foods. Most women do not get all the folic acid they need through food alone.

Who needs folic acid? All people need folic acid. But folic acid is very important for women who are able to get pregnant. When a woman has enough folic acid in her body

20 AUGUST 2010 • Tampa Bay Wellness

before and during pregnancy, it can prevent major birth defects.

How can I be sure I get enough folic acid each day?

How much folic acid do women need?

Women can get enough folic acid by taking a vitamin pill every day. If you have a hard time swallowing pills, you might try a chewable or liquid product that has folic acid. Most U.S. multivitamins have at least 400 micrograms (mcg) of folic acid.

Women able to get pregnant need 400 to 800 mcg or micrograms of folic acid every day, even if they are not planning to get pregnant. (This is the same as 0.4 to 0.8 mg or milligrams.) That way, if they do become pregnant, their babies will be less likely to have birth defects. Talk with your doctor about how much folic acid you need if:

What foods contain folic acid? Folic acid is found naturally in some foods, including leafy vegetables, citrus fruits, beans (legumes), and

www.tampabaywellness.com

whole grains. Folic acid is added to foods that are labeled “enriched,” such as: •Breakfast cereals (Some have 100 percent of the Daily Value of folic acid in each serving) •Breads •Flours •Pastas •Cornmeal •White rice Check the label on the package to see if the food has folic acid. The label will tell you how much folic acid is in each serving. Sometimes, the label will say “folate” instead of folic acid.

Can I get enough folic acid through food alone? The body does not use the natural form of folic acid (folate) as easily as the manmade form. We cannot be sure that eating foods that contain folate would have the same benefits as consuming folic acid. Also, even if you eat a healthy, well-balanced diet, you might not get all the nutrients you need every day from food alone. In the United States, most women who eat foods enriched with folic acid are still not getting all that they need. That’s why it’s important to take a vitamin with folic acid every day.

How can I remember to take folic acid every day? Take your folic acid at the same time every day, such as when you brush your teeth, eat breakfast, or give your children their daily vitamins. This way, taking folic acid becomes a routine. If you can, set up your cell phone or computer to give you a daily reminder.

Can women get too much folic acid? You can't get too much folic acid from foods that naturally contain it. But unless your doctor tells you otherwise, do not consume more than 1,000 mcg of folic acid a day. Consuming too much folic acid can hide signs that a person is lacking vitamin B12, which can cause nerve damage. Lacking vitamin B12 is rare among women of childbearing age. Plus, most prenatal vitamins also contain B12 to help women get all that they need. People at risk of not having enough vitamin B12 are mainly people 50 years and older and people who eat no animal products.

I am no longer of childbearing age. How much folic acid do I need? Older adults need 400 mcg of folic acid every day for good health. But older adults need to be sure they also are getting enough vitamin B12. Too much folic acid can hide signs that a person is lacking vitamin B12. People older than 50 are at increased risk of not having enough vitamin B12. If you are 50 or older, ask your doctor what vitamins and supplements you might need. l

Yoga Poses

Tadasana is the pose of all poses, seemingly simple yet elegantly complicated.

T

ada is Sanskrit for mountain and in this pose you become the mountain, grounded firm upon the earth and rising tall from the core of your being. To come to Tadasana pose place your feet parallel, either touch the big toes together or bring the feet hip widths distance apart. Push down on the four corners of your feet: lift, spread and plant the toes. Firm and inner spiral the quadriceps as you imagine an outer spiral happening in the shins and calves. Pull in the belly and tilt the pelvis slightly forward. Pull up on the arches of the feet and draw an imaginary line up the inner legs to the perineum. Lengthen the side

body, roll back and lower the shoulders to open the chest. Pull the shoulder blades towards one another. Extend your arms along the sides of your body with the palms facing your thighs. Your neck is long, head balanced, and your gaze is level. Breathe! Practice holding this pose for 30 seconds or more. Tadasana corrects posture and alignment, tones the buttocks and firms the whole body. The more you strengthen your core the better you become at mastering basic standing postures as well as the ever illusive inversion poses, such as headstand and handstand. ie on your back on the floor, knees bent feet flat. Support your head a folded blanket if you feel the need. Draw your left knee and thigh into your torso. Press right your right foot to the floor. Loop a strap around the arch of the left foot hold the strap in both hands. Straighten the knee, pressing the left heel up toward the ceiling. Reaching up the strap until the elbows are fully extended. Broaden the shoulder blades across your back and press them lightly into the floor.

Extend your leg keeping the heel up and toes towards the face. BREATHE! Raised your leg perpendicular to the floor release the head of the thigh bone more deeply into the pelvis, draw the foot closer to your head, increasing the stretch on the back of the leg. Extend the right leg along the floor pressing the thigh flat to the earth. Breathe! Hold the posture anywhere from 1 to 3 minutes to open and strengthen muscles of the legs, low back and core. Repeat on the right for the same length of time. Please ask your health care provider before beginning any new exercise routine.

egin with a wide stance facing forward and turn the left foot straight out to the side. Lift the right heel and place it down at a slight angle inward toward the left foot. Lift both arms up to shoulder height, creating lines of energy along the arms out to the horizon. Relax the shoulders and bend the left knee to a right angle, directly above the ankle. Engage the muscles of the back leg, keeping it straight, allowing the heel to serve as an anchor. Widen across the pelvis and the chest, creating space amidst the strong structure of the body. Position the spine perpendicular to the floor, imagining a

straight line continuing from the tailbone downward. Draw the abdomen in and gaze out over the left arm, feeling strength–stability-confidence, infused with compassion-empathy–love, honoring the courageous yet virtuous aspects of the posture. Inhale, expanding breath across the chest, and out to the extremities. Exhale, bringing the mind into a calmness that is supported by the secure stance of the pose. Repeat the posture on the opposite side. Benefits: Warrior II strengthens and aligns the shoulders, pelvis, hips and legs, encouraging the student to be grounded and focused. -Val Spies, The Lotus Room/Lotus Pond Studios, www.yogalotusroom.com

Comparing Nutritional Supplements By: Alex and Ashley Poptodorov

Your body recognizes and processes them just like regular whole food. There are no harsh chemical processes or high heat treatments involved in the manufacturing of these supplements. This results in no stress on the body, full absorption and ultimately achieving the full benefit for the reason you were taking it in the first place. What does the label of a whole food vitamin or supplement look like? The ingredients contain the whole food name from which the vitamin is derived. For example: Vitamin B12 you may see Rice Bran, Vitamin C you may see Citrus fruits, rose hips or Kahmut, Vitamin E you may see Wheat germ. You will not see any preservatives, chemicals, or binders. Also the manufacturing process will be described on the label. Always a cold processing will be used. What is cold processing? This is when the product is never heated at more than 105 degrees Fahrenheit if at all. In conclusion, the key is to provide optimal nutrients to your body through highly absorbable, good quality vitamins, mineral and antioxidants. These should be as close to real food as possible. Do not be afraid to use the power of the internet to fuel your research, there are MANY blogs, write ups and reviews for anything from the vitamins themselves to the reputation of the Company creating the product.

T

here are many companies in existence today riding the health wave. Many of them have supplement product lines that are less than optimal but due to lack of knowledge the consumer is purchasing based on price and advertisement more than quality. We are going to help you decipher and understand the importance of choosing quality supplements as well as how to determine the best supplements to fit your individual needs. First lets start with the basics, synthetic vitamins. What are they? Often times these vitamins are derived through harsh and extensive chemical processes. A synthetic supplement is a chemically derived isolate or a combination of isolates that are duplicates of naturally occurring vitamins, minerals or antioxidants. The problem with synthetic supplements is that many of them contain a lot of toxic impurities such as heavy metals, fillers and binding agents. In addition, the body absorbs them poorly. This can result in upset stomach, burping, gas, bloating, constipation and nausea. More than 85-90% of synthetic vitamins will pass right through you, unabsorbed. The reason why these are not absorbed is because they lack cofactors. These are naturally occurring coenzymes that help the body absorb the vitamins. How do you know whether you are purchasing synthetic or not? Always look at the names of the ingredients on the 22 AUGUST 2010 • Tampa Bay Wellness

product. A synthetic product will list no plant source. Only the chemical or the popular name will be listed. Therefore, aim to purchase products whose whole food sources are listed. In addition, look at the label for “other ingredients” where you will find additives, preservatives, and artificial colors. For example, some of the ingredients you may see listed are: sodium benzoate, nitrites, sulfites, FD&C, Blue #2 or Red #40 which is a known carcinogen. This is just to name a few. The chances are if you are purchase your supplements from major grocery store chains you are purchasing synthetic supplements. Some key signs to look for are price. The good old adage is true… you pay for what you get. Good quality vitamins and supplements usually do cost a little more. Also, it is a very good sign when you make your purchase from a place, which offers educated staff to help you with your choices and to answer any questions you may have. The solution is to eliminate any doubt by purchasing whole food based supplements that are made from the highest quality raw materials. Either look for a single whole food vitamin or a whole food multi vitamin and or mineral complex. Why whole food? The reason is because these are derived from organic, whole food sources such as greens, vegetables, fruits and certain naturally occur-

We highly recommend specialty Vitamin Stores for purchasing and information. This is a case in which you are better off cutting somewhere else in your budget to allow for the purchase of high quality products. Your body and your health depend on it. We hope that this has helped to educate you as a consumer. Please feel free to email Alex with any additional questions you may have. We would love to help! l To further assist you, Alex and Ashley have created a list of reputable top companies who put out high quality products: New Chapter: www.newchaptervitamins.com Mega Foods: www.megafood.com Green Vibrance: www.vibranthealth.us Amazing Greens: www.amazinggrass,com

Medicine

Enter “The Compounding Pharmacist”

I

f you had a prescription filled 60 years ago, there was a 70% chance your prescription was “compounded” by the pharmacist. What does “compounded” mean? It means the physician wrote out a list of ingredients he wanted put in your medication and the pharmacist prepared the medication specifically for you. The physician specified the strength ex: 322mg instead of 500mg or decided if he wanted to add flavoring or coloring. As the years passed, pharmaceutical manufacturers convinced physicians and pharmacists that they could make it better and faster. That’s when you began using medications manufactured for the masses. As the years went by, you began to find that not all medication was agreeable to you. Perhaps the dose was too high or too low. Perhaps it had food coloring or preservatives or fillers that you couldn’t tolerate. Perhaps you had a condition for which there was no medication yet available. The need for more customized medication began to increase, that’s when many independent pharmacists decided to learn the Art and Science of Compounded Medication.

Now 60 years later, the term Compounded Medication is more recognized and many physicians prescribe it for their patients because the medications are made specifically for you and your individual health concerns. You may not be aware that your liver metabolizes many medications. That simply means that medication that you take orally may have undesirable side effects. This is why Compounded Medications are extremely beneficial for Children, Elderly Patients, Pets and all Other Patients. There may be many advantages to having your medication “custom made”. If you have a specific 24 AUGUST 2010 • Tampa Bay Wellness

concern or problem, talk to your physician or Compounding Pharmacist. Many physicians and patients consider Compounding Pharmacists “the drug problem solvers”. The most important thing the “TRIAD” (patient, physician and pharmacist) does is to insure that you are using the safest and most effective medication for you.

VETERINARY Veterinarians have been compounding medications for animals for many years. Have you ever had to give your cat medication? Compounding Pharmacists can flavor medications, or change the route of administration to alleviate the stress for you and your cat. This can be done for “all” animals, including Exotics. Your Vet and Compounding Pharmacist work closely to find the best way to meet your pet’s needs.

HORMONES In the mid 90’s baby boomers began to reach menopause. Enter the Experienced - Knowledgeable Compounding Pharmacist who has worked, studied and attended ongoing continued education to be able to provide the answer to the question “Is it safe for me to use hormones?” The answer is “yes”, there are many reasons why Bio-Identical Hormones are a “safer choice” and your Compounding Pharmacist will be able to explain why during your consultation. Probably the most important thing Compounding Pharmacists do is take time to listen to you. Only you know how your body is reacting to hormonal changes. Compounding Pharmacists don’t treat just lab values - they treat the patient. The Physician and Compounding Pharmacist need years of practical experience to best understand and assist you in finding a solution that works best for you and your changing body. Your progress will be monitored closely to insure the

best outcomes. They’ll find the lowest, safest dose needed to slow the aging process that happens when your hormones levels become depleted The starting point is to do a saliva test at home: your progesterone, estrogen and testosterone levels will be determined. If the levels are low, your Physician and Compounding Pharmacist will work together to determine the “right” dose, the “right” dosage form (ex. Oral, transdermal, sublingual etc.) and the “right” frequency to use your Bio-Identical hormones. Choose the Right Compounding Pharmacy and enjoy the many benefits of Customized Medication. It’s always a good idea to speak with the Compounding Pharmacist who will prepare your medication and ask her/him what they know about the medication, how long they’ve been compounding medications and whether or not they have any experience with bio-identical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) or whichever compounded medication your physician has recommended. Choose one that has confidence and years of experience. Ask if they attend seminars and keep up to date. Finally, if your medication requires adjusting, ask the pharmacist if they’re experienced in consulting with physicians to assist them in making these necessary changes. l Dan Fucarino RPH/ Owner of Carrollwood Pharmacy and Compounding Center has been serving People & Pets in the same location since 1965.
