I was going to another salon, but I felt they were just shipping me in and out. But, not at Skin Savvy. Toni take her time with you. It’s not just a science with her, it’s artistry. She makes me look refreshed and natural looking, not “plasticky.”

WHAT’S IN YOUR WATER? The answer might shock you! Especially if you’re drinking city water. The contaminants and chemicals found in tap water can actually work against your best efforts to stay healthy. In fact, up to 315 contaminants have been found in American tap water since 2004.

One alternative many people turn to instead is bottled water. There is a misconception that bottled water is of higher quality than tap water. Most people are surprised to learn that many bottled waters are created using the process of reverse osmosis, which results in what is commonly referred to as “dead” water. Instead of purifying your body, drinking “dead” water can actually hinder your body’s ability to absorb important nutrients.

Kangen Water is unquestionably the healthiest choice. Rich in oxygen and full of antioxidants, it has no free radicals. Kangen Water has a light, clean, clear, crisp taste you don’t find anywhere else. Kangen Water returns your body to a more alkaline state... which optimizes health! LifeWorks Offers Gentle Pain Relief Special

o you have constant or nagging pain? Well, for the month of July, LifeWorks Wellness Center is offering new patients a chance to get some pain relief by using their therapeutic MAS mat. The clinic is running a month-long special which includes an office visit and one half-hour session on the mat, for the offer price of $50 – a saving of $95 on the regular price. The MAS mat uses a gentle pulsed energy to relax areas of tightness or pain in a non-invasive, relaxing way. Patients lie on the mat for half an hour while the healing takes place, balancing the body’s systems, stimulating cells and speeding up the elimination of toxins. LifeWorks’ co-founder and Medical Director, Dr. David Minkoff explains, “Pain

is a message from our body. The tissues are congested and blood flow is limited. This can result in painful trigger point areas. The MAS mat works by increasing blood circulation, improving oxygen supply and enhancing the metabolism. This helps to rejuvenate cells and relieve pain, from migraines to backache to arthritis. We already have a number of patients who have benefitted from this treatment with very positive results.” This offer is valid from July 1-31, 2012 and applies to new patients only. For those wanting to know more about this offer or any of the other protocols offered at the clinic, call 727 466 6789 or visit www.lifeworkswellnesscenter.com. LifeWorks is located at 301Turner Street, Clearwater, FL.

Do you live with any or all of the following? • Back pain due to sciatica • Sleepless Nights • Back or neck injury because of an accident • Back or leg pain when seated. • Numbness in your hands or toes • Degenerative Disc Disease The good news is that if you suffer from any of the ailments above we can offer a new solution to your problems which you previously believed you either had to live with or go through painful surgeries to correct. newsbriefs The Sentient Temple Offers Their

SHAMANIC MULTIDIMENSIONAL MIND COURSE July 27th, 28th & 29th

T

his modality of mind control teaches you how to manipulate your mind and project it to another person, or place, to mold the outcome of an event. In some circles it is called remote viewing, in others mind control. It is taught by the CIA, FBI and Secret Service. It is taught in Russia to their undercover agents. It is taught by every major power in the world. In MULTIDIMENSIONAL MIND, we combine Shamanism and remote viewing. It is a powerful modality of mind control that in today’s world, and tough economic times, you cannot afford to be without. It will prepare you to manifest into your world that which will serve your highest good. It opens the pathway to everything that you want in your world. HOW? It really is simple. Everything you want and/or desire is already created in the Universe; the trick is to bring it into your space, your world and your life.

We teach you how to open that floodgate of wealth, happiness, good health, bliss and ecstasy, or find the partner you always wanted. Many people are interested in learning how to develop more awareness and control in their activities. MULTIDIMENSIONAL MIND demonstrates that the difficulties many people experience in learning, in control of performance and in physical functioning are caused by unconscious habits. These habits interfere with your natural poise, and your capacity to learn. When you stop interfering with the innate coordination of the body, you can take on more complex activities with greater self-confidence and presence of mind. Open your mind, open your world and be more than you ever thought you could be.

class of women of all ages—and some men—stand barefoot in a contemporary fitness studio. They sport smiles, sarongs (“lava lavas” in Hot Hula lingo), and plenty of sweat. They’re hot, but they keep moving their hips in a circular motion, left and right; their bodies create a beautiful and fluid pattern. Reggae music and Polynesian drum beats punctuate their moves. Each pair of curvy hips, bare feet, and upward-turned lips makes a statement – “I feel like a dancer and I’m exercising, too.” Is this what you get when you fuse the fashion and flavor of Polynesian dance with the standard elements of a modern American fitness class?

“It is kind of exotic and it’s these moves they’ve seen on TV, so it’s fun to get to learn how to move your body that

way,” confirms Molly Tanuvasa, a local instructor of HOT HULA fitness®.

Tanuvasa is also the Florida area manager for HOT HULA fitness®, a popular exercise that finds its roots in the history of the Pacific Islands. Anna-Rita Sloss, born to Western Samoans living in New Zealand, planted the first “Hot Hula” seed, which has since blossomed into a mainstay of mainland fitness options. But this hot “hula” has nothing to do with hula hoops. Sloss defines HOT HULA fitness® as a “total body workout” that “isolates larger muscle groups, increasing strength and definition to your core with specific emphasis on the abs, glutes, quads and arms.” HOT HULA fitness® incorporates easy to perform traditional and modern dance movements. The dance movements are set to the sounds of traditional Polyne-

sian drum beats fused with Reggae music. The result? A hip, modern workout that offers a fresh and fun option for everyone. After leaving Hawaii, Tanuvasa, a married mother of six children, found that HOT HULA fitness® offered her a way to feel at home in her new environment: “We moved here two years ago, and I just kind of felt like I was still missing something . . . I was trying to figure out how to bring my culture over here. I heard about HOT HULA fitness® and it was big on the East Coast, and I happened to be at home on a four-month vacation and saw that there was a certification there. I was so excited to get certified and bring something I love back to Tampa.” In addition to bringing part of home from Hawaii to Florida, HOT HULA fitness® has helped Tanuvasa feel more at home

in her body. She has lost thirty-six pounds since she started teaching HOT HULA fitness® in January of 2012. Tanuvasa credits both the physical and mental benefits of HOT HULA fitness® for her weight loss. Psychologically, HOT HULA fitness® created a shift in perception: “I’d always felt like once I lose the weight, then I’ll feel pretty . . . with HOT HULA fitness® I looked in the mirror . . . and for the first time I saw how graceful and beautiful even at 200 pounds my body can be.” Her curvy hips are what caught her eye. In fact, curvier women may find Hot Hula movements easier than their size-two classmates. But Hot Hula dance moves encourage people of all sizes to embrace their bodies and to view exercise as a celebration, rather than a chore or a punishment. “You don’t work out because you hate your body. You work out because you love it,” explains Tanuvasa.

Originator of Hot Hula®

Anna-Rita Sloss

“Utilizing my passion, knowledge and my heritage, I developed a new workout program called HOT HULA fitness®. The program is a fun core workout set to the rhythm of the islands guaranteed to bring a smile to your face. The drumbeats and music will take you to the islands as you burn calories while strengthening your core, arms and legs. I know you will enjoy the HOT HULA fitness® program.” www.anna-rita.com

According to Tanuvasa, one move, the “Varu,” engages the hips to trace a figureeight shape. What distinguishes the Varu in Molly’s class, however, is that when participants elevate a hip, they also squeeze their obliques. “That’s what some of the women feel has firmed up their core and toned up their thighs and glutes,” Tanuvasa explains. “The movements we do really tone up your hour-glass figure.” Men, too, can benefit from HOT HULA fitness®. Although they may not strive for an hour glass figure, men don’t want all of their strength to lie exclusively north of their navel, either. Tanuvasa confirms this, explaining that HOT HULA fitness® gives men a chance to focus on parts of the body they tend to overlook -- their abdomen, glutes, and quads. Modified moves make characteristically feminine moves more masculine. For example, instead of keeping www.tampabaywellness.com

coverstory

Hot Hula: A Hip, Modern Workout for Everyone their feet together for one of the first, basic moves in which participants tuck under their tailbone to work their core, men keep their feet approximately shoulder width apart. The “S” curve created for women looks more like a “Z” when adapted for men. Although these and other modifications make moves feel more masculine, knowing a bit about the history of hula dancing can as well. “Originally, the only people who hula danced were men,” says Tanuvasa. “Females

weren’t allowed to do it.” Luckily, times have changed, allowing men and women of all ages to hula dance their way to the rhythm and drum beats that accentuate and punctuate the 60-minute workout. Like a soundtrack, the music signals shifts in the scripted moves of the dance sequence. “We break down the dance (it’s called “siva,” the Samoan word for dance) to Tahitian drum beats,” Tanuvasa explains. “It kind of whisks you away and gives it that tropical, Polynesian feel. That’s our main cardio portion. We push really hard, and just when you think, ok, I’m exhausted, then we switch up the music and put on either hip hop or Reggae, something that

brings new life into the dance.” For those who fear the difficulty of the class will completely wear them out, there is good news. Classes initiate a sequenced routine, beginning at the most basic level, which builds each week. HOT HULA fitness® always engages the lower body, but challenging routines that focus especially on the legs or abs follow a thorough leg warm up. According to Tanuvasa, each week gets more intense so that people can build up their stamina. And all classes end with a fun cooling-down routine. “Back in Hawaii we like our dances; we like our electric slide and our wobble,” Tanuvasa explains. “If you want to get

anyone on the dance floor—I don’t care if they’re grandmas or children—put one of those [dances] on and they come up. We normally cool it down to something that’s just fun.” So if you have been avoiding exercising because you don’t find it fun, you would prefer to go barefoot, or a lava lava suits you more than a leotard, consider trying something new. Molly teaches two evening classes in Tampa on Mondays. She teaches an evening class on Tuesday and Thursday evenings in Brandon as well. The incredible benefits of weight training & muscle in reaching your goals

I

n my years spent as a Fitness Professional I have found one thing to be true, many people who start a training program are not always aware of the wide range of benefits that weight training provides in addition to weight loss. I am going to review and highlight some of the benefits of weight training so you will have loads of knowledge the next time you hit the gym and those weights! One thing I always enjoy is my time spent in the gym. I am always looking for ways to “switch it up” and keep things fresh. I have found that the best way to burn fat and shape my body has been through the implementation of a consistent weight-training regimen. Notice I said, “shape my body”. 16 July 2012 • Tampa Bay Wellness

Most people determine how successful they are with a given program by the total amount of weight lost on a scale. While this approach does indicate changes are taking place, it does not always mean you will achieve your desired outcome. Basically, you can easily exercise and eat the wrong way resulting in a loss of water and muscle. Let me use myself as an example. When I first started on my own journey to health I was infatuated with the scale. I knew nothing about muscle and how it could play a huge role in propelling me towards my goals. I knew only of the dreaded “number on the scale” and did everything possible (including nearly starving myself) to see that number drop. In looking back at pictures, I now see how gaunt and frail I looked. There was no muscle there

to support my daily functions and I looked sickly. Not to mention, all of the methods I had painstakingly applied to lose weight were not healthy or nutritious for my body at all. So, what is the moral of this story? Joyfully embrace weights and the many benefits you will reap! I am so excited for you to learn more and apply this to your daily exercise regimen as you will be looking and feeling even better in no time! The benefits of weight training and muscle are so incredible so do not be afraid to make some notes or highlight. Applying this information can contribute towards changing the way you do things from now on and I would love to hear how this helps you in your daily journey to health.

www.tampabaywellness.com

The first and favorite benefit of mine is the amazing way weights SHAPE your body. Are you looking to “firm up” or “tone up”? Weights are your answer! You can spend time doing cardio every day which is a great thing but if you want to see definition and tightness you will need to become friends with “the weights”. Like a good friend, they will not let you down. One thing to keep in mind is that muscle does weigh more than fat so this approach to health may require you to hide the scale for a while. Go with how you “look” and “feel” and use other factors such as your daily energy levels as a determining factors as to if the program is working. Be patient as well. When I first started my journey I understood that it would take time to adapt to my new training style and that these new habits needed time to “form” if you will. I promise you that you will feel fabulous and toned in no time! Another huge benefit is that weights can reduce your risk of Diabetes, Heart Disease and Osteoporosis! YES! You can not only reach your desired physical goals but your doctor will just

www.tampabaywellness.com

love the fact that you are taking a proactive approach to your health. Muscle helps to lower inflammation in your body and is one of the biggest contributors towards fighting visceral fat. In addition, muscle burns more calories. Oh yes! You will have a built in, calorie-zapping machine when you add nice lean muscle to that body of yours! Did you know that muscle literally consumes calories around the clock? As you rest and sleep your muscle is working “for” you and not against you. This is a key to burning fat and reaching your goals. As for lowering inflammation, physical exercise helps to accomplish this naturally by lowering levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), which is linked to inflammation. The key to overall health is keeping your inflammation markers as low as possible and weights will help contribute to this. When it comes to building healthy and strong bones, resistance training is at the top of the list. Weight bearing exercise causes muscles and tendons pull on the bones during exercise in turn resulting in stimulating bone

cells to produce more bone. How amazing is that? Our bodies are meant to move and to be active. When you follow this pattern you will see the direct impact not only on your physical achievement but your health as well. Resistance training improves your mood! Yes… if you are looking for something to smile about, getting in the gym and lifting those weights is your answer. I will be the first one to tell you that after an intense weight training session you feel such an improved sense of wellbeing. Besides feeling challenged you feel accomplished knowing that you achieved an intense workout. There is a satisfaction in knowing that you are consistently reaching for a goal. It is proven too that your body releases feel good “endorphins” which result in a fitter and happier YOU!

So now, you have more than one reason to get in the gym and pick up those weights. Keep in mind that it is advisable to seek the help of a fitness professional (such as those at AAP Fitness) to help you if you have never weight trained. The whole objective is to learn how to properly workout without injury. A qualified, certified trained professional can help you effectively design a plan, set some goals and start you on the path towards a healthier and fitter you! If you have any questions at all feel free to reach out to me. I am always available to answer questions and welcome emails. I also love getting feedback on your progress and love hearing how you’ve applied these tips. - In health, Ashley Poptodorova

Vitamin D

W

ith the height of the sun season upon us, health officials are telling everybody to pull out their sunscreen and slather it on. Unfortunately, this is a prescription for minimizing vitamin D levels and all its widely appreciated benefits. Also, new guidelines on claims and ingredients in sun lotions allowed by the EWG came out last month. So, before you head out to the beach, read on!

Tip #1: Your Initial Exposure: Safe sun exposure is essential for optimal health, but incorrect exposure can raise your risk of skin cancer while not providing any health benefits. Sunburn should be avoided at all cost. The first few days, you should

Safe Sun Exposure and Harmful Sun Screens limit your exposure to the sun to allow your body’s melanocyte cells to rev up the ability to produce protective pigmentation that not only gives you a tan, but also serves to help protect you against overexposure to the sun. If you are a fairly light skinned individual that tends to burn, you will want to limit your initial exposure to a few minutes, especially if it is in the middle of summer. The more tanned your skin will get, and/or the more tanned you want to become, the longer you can stay in the sun. If it is early or late in the season and/or you are a dark skinned individual, you could likely safely have 30 minutes on your initial exposure. If you are deeply pigmented and your immediate ancestors are from Africa, India

or the Middle East, it is possible you may not even have to worry about the timing of your exposure. Always err on the side of caution however, and let it be your primary goal to never get sun burned. In case you do develop a sun burn, immediately apply raw aloe vera. It’s one of the best remedies to help accelerate skin healing.

Tip #2 After Sun Exposure, Be Careful about Showering! Vitamin D3 is an oil soluble steroid hormone that forms when your skin is exposed to UVB radiation from the sun. When UVB strikes the surface of your skin, your skin converts a cholesterol derivative into vitamin D3. It takes up to 48 hours for this vitamin D3 to be absorbed into your bloodstream to elevate your vitamin D levels. Therefore, avoid washing your legs & arms with soap after sun exposure (just focus on armpits & groin).

Tip #3 Read the Label of Your Sunscreen Contrary to popular belief, many sunscreen products may actually increase the speed at which malignant cells develop and spread skin cancer because they contain vitamin A and its derivatives, retinol and retinyl palmitate, as well as other hazardous ingredients. Check the Environmental Working Group’s (EWG) 2012 Sunscreen Guide to see if your sunscreen is one of the 75% with potentially harmful ingredients in it. To make it onto EWG’s safe list, sunscreens must: Be free of oxybenzone Be free of retinyl palmitate (a type of vitamin A) Provide a maximum of SPF 50, and Protect against both UVA and UVB sunrays Follow these 3 principles and enjoy a safe, nourishing happy Summer! Freedom from Emotional Eating; Making the Shift from Mind to Body

I

t’s summer time! Kids are out of school, the weather is hot, and time now to make those vacations plans or simply slow down, go to the beach or hit the pool and relax a little! Ah, it sounds great doesn’t it? However, along with the fun also brings the distress of having to try on your old bathing suit or go shopping for a new one. No other season tips our emotions regarding our self-image like summer. But summer isn’t the only time, many struggle with maintaining a healthy body weight year round. Are you an emotional eater? For instance, do you get triggered to eat when under stress? Do you eat for comfort, escape or to feel good? Do you eat to anesthetize bad feelings about yourself? Or do you reward yourself with food for working hard, eat when bored, or because it’s just plain fun? Are you eating when not actually hungry? Does the word diet make you cringe? If you said yes to any or all of these questions, don’t worry you are not alone. Moreover, it is not your fault! You are not a bad or worthless person because you struggle with food. At a young age, many of us grew up learning from our parents and caretakers to use food as a reward and as a result “attached” a good feeling or positive outcome to certain foods. For instance, our parents gave us a cookie or piece of candy to illicit a specific behavior-all with good intentions, but we sometimes learned to use food to feel good when feeling badly. We were also taught to clean our plates and not be wasteful so we stopped listening to our body’s natural response to stop when full and satisfied. This coupled with cultural pressure to adhere to a specific body type or image has created not a sense of empowerment but confusion and perhaps feelings of self-loathing and unworthiness for not “measuring up”! So, right now is the time to begin to make the shift from what your mind desires to actualizing that vision of a healthy, fit self to the body! And in the words of Wayne Dyer, a beloved self-help guru“EXCUSES BEGONE”!

Rule #1 Decide what eating and exercise plan is best for you. 20 July 2012 • Tampa Bay Wellness

Rule #2 Visualize what you want and will look like as healthy and fit, give this image detail-what is future you wearing, eating and doing? Try her/ him on like new clothes: jump inside and look out through his/her eyes and see what it feels like to be fit, healthy and happy. Another way to design the future you is to make a vision board. To complete a vision board use pictures, images from magazines etc regarding things like healthy foods, exercise, rewards and positive words and phrases, then put on a wall where you’ll see it daily. This will help with motivation and to reorganize and propel the mind toward goal.

Rule #3 Stop beating yourself up and get ready to make a change! Next, take the time to identify your thoughts and beliefs about yourself that make you stay stuck in a negative pattern and then turn it around or flip it! Some common negatives and useful flips are: • Empowerment vs Loss> Get rid of the word “diet” which equates lacking something and can’t have to “I choose to eat this instead of that”. • Think “I now am making intelligent food choices for my body and health vs “I can’t have that because I am on a diet because I was bad!” • ”It’s too hard and will take too long” vs. “right now, today I’m doing it and it feels good to be on track today”….remember everyone wants to lose 20lbs 7 months ago when they look in the mirror. It took time to gain it so isn’t it worth your time now to lose it? • Think of food as fuel for energy and ask when reaching for something to eat “Will this fuel my body and feed my brain”. • “I already cheated with 3 cookies today so why stop I blew it and I might as well finish the box vs. “Stop-Right now I am again taking control and putting the cookie box down” • “My goal is to be healthy, fit and happy” vs “skinny, thin or a particular size or number” • I’m feeling stressed, badly now” vs “this too will pass”,

take a drink of water and redirect mind with new behavior(take a walk, meditate, listen to music, etc to create the calm your wanting) • For cravings, take the urge of eating badly thru your mind to the known end result of weight gain, and unhealthy. Next, immediately take a deep breath and visualize your future you model , and recall the positive feeling. This will help to re-motivate and dispel the craving. • Keeping essential oils like orange or lavender to breathe in when feeling badly or stressed will help to calm and relax and to retrain your brain by pairing the old response of eating or binging with a new one. It is important to take the time to take care of yourself. There are many good programs out there, find the one that best suits your metabolic and physical needs. Seek a physician for the green light and have any tests that you were putting off to “get a good bill of health” before getting started. However, beyond exercise and a healthful nutrition plan, the most essential and often overlooked component of a weight loss program is addressing the emotional response to food when it is no longer a useful one. Find a therapist you connect with to help you with your specific issues. Finally, the bottom line is, after clearing past and current emotional triggers to food, identifying negative self-talk patterns and how that creates your feelings and behavior, will greatly enhance a sense of peace, calm and balance while in the body and break the proverbial “hamster on the wheel” cycle of losing weight only to regain it. After all, when feeling empowered, energy and motivation increase. Why not give yourself permission today to stop the old cycle and be the change you desire, make the shift and become self-actualized. Higher Consciousness HOW DO WE GET THERE? Part 3

A

re you ready for a transformation of your consciousness, an inner flowing that is radical and profound? Are you ready for an instant emotional acceptance of what is here in front of you now? An acceptance of emotional feelings in which you will experience a constant sense that all is in perfect and divine order-even including challenges? Higher consciousness is, truly, a state of being that we want to attain. It is a feeling of great calm amidst the chaos. It is accepting all that has shown up for you as important information for your best and highest good-even though the obstacles may be painful, hurtful, or devastating. These not such good-feeling situations are part of the healing, learning and growth cycles we humans find ourselves in. Learning to release our resistance and learning to accept our way through difficulties as part of our life’s journey paves the way to higher consciousness. The Law of Higher Consciousness ,as written about by Ken Keyes in his classic book, Handbook To Higher Consciousness, teaches that love is the primary ingredient that provides a foundation to attain this state of calm detachment. He states Higher Consciousness is a state in which we strive for unconditional love. Unconditional love actually means acceptance of it all. Loving everyone unconditionally-including yourself -enables you to bypass the ego’s attachment to satisfying emotional desires. Unfortunately, we have never been taught how to love unconditionally. This is a simple concept but not easy to accomplish. Ken Keyes states that unconditional love is “I love you because you are there. It is the love that you are a part of the now of my life. It is, “I love you because, although our bodies and minds may be on different trips, on the consciousness level all of us are alike in our humanness.”

When you see yourself consciously and clearly, you realize you are perfect-your only problem is to change some of the deeply embedded programming in your subconscious behavioral patterns from which you are operating. For instance, an abundance of money is a strongly desired program in our culture. We are programmed to want it, to desire it and to work hard for it. However, the lack of abundance in our life is only a result of our belief in scarcity. This belief in scarcity results from our belief in a future in which there will never be enough. Our belief in a future filled with scarcity and fear results from our resistance to the acceptance of all is in divine and perfect order. With a Higher Consciousness, feelings and desires open the way to freedom, acceptance, harmony, and to manifesting abundance.
The abundance that we attain in our life is a result of our belief in an infinitely abundant universe. Our belief in infinite abundance goes hand in hand with a conscious awareness that infinite abundance exists right now as we accept a belief in an abundant and giving universe. According to Eckert Tolle, author of The New Earth, we inherited emotional dysfunctions because we are born with much of our pain and suffering. He calls this our pain-body. Yet we also, because of our lower consciousness tendencies of fear, greed, and desire for power, contribute to our ego-based material world. This encourages the psychological motivating forces not only behind warfare and violence between nations, tribes, religions and ideologies, but also causes incessant conflict in personal relationships. This is the primary element blocking our inner awareness -our inherit pain and suffering from our lower consciousness. These conflicts bring about a distortion in our perception of other people as well as

ourselves. Tolle describes “through the pain-body, we misinterpret every situation which leads to misguided action. This is the collective manifestations of the insanity that lies at the heart of the human conditionconsciousness projected outward which is pain and suffering with our dysfunctions.” Once we recognize our lower consciousness as our inherited pain-body, we can begin to heal and genuinely move into the transformation of our Higher Consciousness. Thus, a new consciousness begins to arise within each one of us revealing our soul of peace, harmony, joy, and fulfillment. Tolle’s The New Earth serves as a pathway for realizing our individual purpose and global responsibility. If and when we can accept the existence of the unseen mysterious energy force of the pain-body as an energy that has generationally influenced our wounded egos to the point of dysfunction, we can and will gently move into an awakening. Tolle describes “Awakening as a shift in consciousness in which thinking and awareness separate.” Usually this is not an event but a process we undergo in which a new state of consciousness gradually flows into us and transforms everything we are and do. This new awakening becomes integrated into our lives. We become the inner awareness of peace, harmony, and beauty. Awareness is consciousness connection with universal intelligence. Another word for awareness is Presence: which is Higher Consciousness without thought. The connection and profound meaning of The New Earth is that it is about recognizing our pain, realizing that not all of it is our fault and we can strive to be in the present moment. Being in the present leads us to our purpose. Our purpose is the present moment, and striving to become aware of our inner being. Our consciousness is not www.tampabaywellness.com

what we do. Our consciousness is our purpose. Our consciousness is our Self. Thus, through awareness and Higher Consciousness our true inner beauty is revealed.

To say that this is an awesome opportunity is to understate the true reality of this profound gift. Higher Consciousness is value to our soul for what we have been given.

beauty & you

By Hal Manogue

YOUR

Q&A

BEAUTY Beauty is constituted by the free harmonious play of imagination and understanding.

Immanuel Kant, born in 1724 was a German philosopher. He is regarded as one of the most influential thinkers of the 18th century and his thoughts are still studied around the world. His work is a rock in the foundation of metaphysics and epistemology. He spent his life questioning the nature of reality. Philosophers have discussed beauty for centuries. Kant said that when we think something is beautiful, we want to share it in some way, or at least get confirmation that we are right in thinking that object or person can be labeled beautiful. Other great thinkers say that beauty is a reflection of our inner consciousness, which is expressing itself in physical form. Beauty is obviously diverse as well as complex in nature, it represents part of our belief structure and how we perceive the world around us. Rumi, the 13th century poet and philosopher said: We are surrounded by beauty, but we usually have to be walking in a garden to appreciate it. Whatever the definition used 24 July 2012 • Tampa Bay Wellness

to explain beauty, it’s safe to say that beauty changes as my beliefs about it change. Natural beauty is something within me, but the rigors of daily life cover that beauty with fear and anger, so I separate my self from that innate quality. I then try to construct beauty in some other form using art, music, personal style or body consciousness and then label it beauty based on my perceptions. I spend a lifetime searching for the beautiful aspects of physical life and when I think I know what they are, I built a self that represents that beauty and share it with the world in my own way. Physical attractiveness and an individualistic personality define beauty in physical form, so I go to extremes to build an image that fits my beliefs about the external nature of beauty and expect my peers to compliment my dedication to that goal. I reach that goal at different times and use extraordinary means to

maintain it and keep it as I travel through time. I discover that beauty is a thought that I create and then manifest using my imagination and creativity. Beauty is and will always be a subjective aspect of consciousness, which is expressed objectively. Life is for the experience and if I can define and do define beauty by my thoughts about it, beauty can be whatever I want it to be. That’s the beauty of being aware of the beauty of my inner consciousness. It’s in a constant state of change and beauty is a tool I use to express those changes. Beauty is a root of consciousness and when I allow it to grow freely I physically experience it in its natural state. Howard (Hal) Thomas Manogue was born in Philadelphia, and is a forerunner to the Indigo children, a now age term for misfit with an intuitive nature, a desire to know his truth with a gift of giving and sharing. http://halmanogue.blogspot. com/ www.shortsleeves.net

natural medicine

By Alison J. Kay

Sugar Addiction Sugar is an addiction. Addiction is driven by a mind w/ subconscious and unconscious beliefs, a spirit with certain lessons to learn and a body reflecting these first two. So, addiction is not just at the body level; we’ll suggest some tips to get the body out of its addicted state, but we need to also look at the psyche of why we turn to anything to satisfy us in order to permanently undo addictive behavior. With sugar, we’re not 100% responsible due to what the food industry has been slipping into our mainstream food supply over the past four decades. Did you know that in the 1600’s they used to pass around pouches of white refined sugar - it was brown back then, in its natural form - at parties for a buzz? This has become today’s high fructose corn syrup. And this along with other forms of sugar, additives and preservatives in order to create and preserve the new foods our food industry has created since the 1970‘s that fill the shelves in the grocery stores that comprise the center aisles are why we’re where we are in our country. It has become a carbohydrate coma that we’ve been in for the past four decades, and then we turn to doctors who don’t typically have an answer for the host of chronic issues as a result of eating these foods. Not for this article, but just as a heads up, cancer cells have 6-13 times the insulin receptor sites as healthy cells. Meaning they pick up the sugar and deliver it right 26 July 2012 • Tampa Bay Wellness

back to the cancer cells, feeding them. Sugar feeds infections, as well as unfriendly bacteria that help yeast to grow, which then fills our systems with a tendency towards fungal and bacterial infections. Ah, now you’re starting to see the connection between our food and the state of health in our country. What food we put in our mouths at this point requires us to be vigilant AND extremely self-responsible. Adrenal burnout (due to longterm stress and inadequate nutrition combined) and candida are two of the most frequently misdiagnoses in our country. Both lead to a host of chronic bodily imbalances that Western medicine misdiagnoses and then says there’s no real hope for treating or curing, such as lupus, chronic fatigue, chrohn’s, fungal and bacteria issues, food sensitivities and allergies, and exhaustion. Ironically, when we’re exhausted, we turn to carbohydrates for quick energy, like those energy drinks that are basically all sugar and caffeine. It takes about 4-5 days to break a body’s addiction to carbohydrates. Some suggestions to pull your body out of its state of sugar addiction: • Stop drinking any and all sweetened beverages; water w/ lemon sweetened w/stevia. *Exercise to bring your body’s crashed metabolism back in to balance quickly • Counteract your cravings for sweets with the following

from the mind, body & spirit model

foods: onions, carrots, butternut squash, apple cider vinegar (over salads n vegetables), sea vegetables, more eggs at first, cinnamon, mesquite powder (in health food stores, tastes like caramel, use in smooothies) • Get high quality spirulina, it really helps take away the body’s sugar cravings. Any of the grasses are a second choice (i.e. wheat grass, barley grass) With the unconscious and subconscious beliefs, your food addictions could be from a lack of belief in your worthiness and deservedness (when you have cravings for or repulsions to milk products & meat). Problems with gluten and wheat and a desire for high-foods tends to relate to chakra 2, where there are emotional needs to be comforted and loved. Foods that provide quick energy, such as caffeine, colas and other stimulants tend to be affected by self-esteem and self-confidence “issues.” Cravings for sugar are frequently a substitute for love and companionship, with a drive for carbohydrates often stemming from a substitute for connection with God and indicates lacking a clear spiritual purpose. The mechanics of each chakra are a deep science, and to

even begin to explain them here is out of the reach of this article. There was not even a definition for addictive behavior until the 20th century. Cultures before us have always indulged. So defining addiction as a problem, well that in and of itself could be looked at. We could also say that we are all addicts in some way, because we’re born incongruent, meaning a lack of union between our hearts and minds. I think vs. I feel. There is an intermediary between following what our heart says and what our mind says and this is the role of addiction, to soften that role of being tossed in between our heart and mind. Another way to say this is we are not ready to admit to ourselves a truth, so we use a form of addiction to keep our lives from changing as a result of admitting and acknowledging this truth to ourselves. Addictions are not just to physical substances, behaviors act as addictions, certain choices act as addictions: power, pouting, attention, pain & suffering, blanking out, helplessness, fantasizing and many more. Essentially, the concept here is anything that keeps us able to control the rate at which change effects our lives, this is what we turn to addictions for.

Natural Mood Support

Sadness. Irritability. Anxiety. Fatigue. Apathy. Worthlessness. Hopelessness. Desperation. Despair. We have all felt these words from time to time. Some even live these words every day and don’t understand why. All of those words are used to describe depression. It is constant and it is real. Millions of Americans live with depression and many of those people have tried conventional treatments with little or no success. But there is hope. Natural medicine offers alternative options – combinations that address the whole person, not just one tiny mechanism in

the human body. The causes of depression are complex. They can include biochemical, socioeconomic, genetic and situational reasons. Many of these reasons cannot and will not be answered by a pill alone. However, using the right combination of nutrients and herbs can give you the foundation and support you need to work through whatever it may be that brought you to this point.

Supporting Healthy Vitamin Levels Vitamins, especially certain B vitamins, are fundamental in regulating mood and sub-optimal levels of these vitamins could contribute to depression. Both vitamin B12 and folate are involved in the metabolism of a compound called S-adenosylmethionine, SAMe for short. SAMe is required for the formation

of certain neurotransmitters, such as serotonin, epinephrine and dopamine. All of these neurotransmitters play a role in mood regulation. Low levels of SAMe in the central nervous system results in lower levels of these neurotransmitters. Studies have shown that many people suffering with depression are either deficient in or have low levels of folate and vitamin B 12. By supplementing with vitamin B12 and folate, the body is provided with foundational nutrition to support healthy SAMe levels in the body, among the many other metabolic reactions in which these vitamins participate. Vitamin D is another nutrient that impacts mood. Deficiencies in this vitamin are common in western countries. Receptors for vitamin D are present throughout the brain, which suggests its importance in brain health.

Recent research has shown that people with a vitamin D deficiency had a higher likelihood of having depression than those with healthy vitamin D levels.

Amino Acids Amino acids are another group of nutrients that are essential in mood regulation and neurotransmitter production. 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) is an amino acid that is a direct precursor to serotonin, the “feel good” neurotransmitter. 5-HTP has been studied for decades for its benefits in depression and mood regulation. These studies reveal that supplementation with 5-HTP effectively increases the production of serotonin in the central nervous system. These studies also show that the speed of response to this amino acid is on average 2 weeks, compared to 4 weeks

natural remedies or longer with conventional antidepressants. One of the most important aspects of 5-HTP is that it has a very low incidence of side effects. L-tyrosine is another amino acid required for the production of neurotransmitters – norepinephrine and dopamine. Norepinephrine plays a role in focus and motivation, while dopamine is involved in the complex reward system of the brain. The synthesis of these neurotransmitters is dependent upon the presence of L-tyrosine. L-tyrosine is directly metabolized to dopamine, which in turn is a precursor to epinephrine. Several military studies show that supplementation with L-tyrosine improved memory and cognitive performance and reduced fatigue.

Stress and Mood

Stress is a normal physical and psychological reaction to nega-

tive or positive situations in life. Chronic, unrelenting stress can lead to depression. Controlling stress and coping with stress is important to overall stress. But if a person is already in the throes of depression, it is likely that he or she cannot cope and it may be one of the causes of depression. Coping skills obviously aren’t provided in a pill. Learning these skills takes time. Luckily, there are herbs that help the brain and body adapt to stress. These herbs are fittingly called adaptogens. Adaptogens are plants that help the body adapt to stress, support normal metabolic functions and help to restore balance in the body. They increase the body’s resistance to emotional, physical and environmental stress; they even provide defenses against chronic stress. Holy basil, Ocimum

Holistic Dentistry

sanctum, is a sacred plant in India. In the Ayurvedic system of medicine, it is classified as a rasayana, an herb that nourishes the path to health and promotes life. It is treasured for its ability to bring about goodness and joy in humans. Schisandra chinensis is an adaptogen derived from Traditional Chinese Medicine. The berries of this plant are said to have all five flavors found in Traditional Chinese Medicine – sweet, sour, bitter, pungent and salty. Because it has all of these tastes, it said to have benefits throughout the body. Modern research shows that it has a very unique effect on the central nervous system. While it is able to mildly stimulate the central nervous system by enhances reflexes and mental activity, it simultaneously calms and helps to relieve anxiety.

By combining a foundation of adaptogens to uplift the spirit and provide a platform for the body to control and regulate the stress response with vital and essential nutrients to directly impact brain chemistry, more complete support can be offered to those suffering with depression. What Are They? Definition of Crystals What do stones mean in the context of Mineralogy? Gemstones, semiprecious stones or tumbled stones are minerals which are crystalline in nature and always form in one of six types of regular shapes or patterns, such as a Quartz Crystal which has a hexagonal (six-sided) structure. However some stones such as Turquoise, may not appear like the typical transparent crystal because their crystal-like structure is at a microscopic level. Rocks differ from stones in that a rock like Granite or Sodalite is non-homogeneous. This means it is composed of different minerals in varying proportions, in no regular pattern. Each piece is slightly different from any other piece. All crystals are stones, whether they are clear “gemstones” like Emerald or the more common form of the same mineral, Green Beryl. Rocks may contain some crystals, but are not 100% crystal. Small rocks are sometimes called stones; but technically, stones are always a crystal and not a piece of rock. Gemstones are considered valuable because of their beauty and rarity. A perfectly clear Ruby, for instance, is a very rare and valuable transparent gemstone specimen of a stone called Red Corundum. A Sapphire is another variety of Corundum, differing from a Ruby only by the tiny quantities of trace minerals which 32 July 2012 • Tampa Bay Wellness

give it a blue or white coloration instead of red. Amethyst and Citrine are “semiprecious” gem-stone varieties of the common Quartz crystal, which differ only by their coloration

stronger healing vibration or to purify an area of negative vibrations. They can be used to purify and recharge other crystals, healing stones or jewelry by simply placing them on the cluster for at least three hours.

Emerald and Aquamarine are two varieties of the mineral Beryl which differ only by trace mineral content and color.

Types of Crystals

Generator Crystals: Single quartz crystals that can be used in healing to intensify the energy that the healer channels to himself or a client. They can be used to direct the energy flow by pointing the termination (pointed end) in the desired direction. They are very powerful tools and large Generator Crystals should be used with caution.

Crystal Clusters: Formations of single terminated crystals. They can be placed in an area to create a

Double Terminated Crystals: These are quartz where the six faces join together to form a point in both ends. These crystals can radiate as well as draw energy from both ends. They are used to dissolve negative energy that is manifested in the physical body or the aura, by placing the crystal over the affected area. Double Terminated Crystals can also be used to relax an unbalanced emotional or mental condition by holding a crystal in each hand. They can be used to balance the energies between any two elements, for example between two Chakras.

Program Your Crystal Crystals can be programmed for different uses like healing, meditation, astral travel, relationship/ love, restful sleep, etc. Typically if you program a crystal, you should only use it for that specific need until it is reprogrammed. Place a “healing” crystal on top of a picture of that person to increase results. Different types of quartz, large Generator Crystals or Clusters with the terminations pointing in the same direction can be used. To program a crystal, bring it to your heart. Inhale and exhale over the crystal three times. On the last exhalation, think/say your desired use--”healing,” “protection,” or whatever your intention. There are many more types of crystals and uses. For more training consider my Crystal 101 E-book and the upcoming Elementary Crystal class on July 15th! JOY…and why not? Much can be gained by consolidating the tasks that lie before you. Pay close attention to events in your environment. Avoid getting into polarization with others. Move forward into the next level of development and deepen your realizations so as to make things more potent. Clarify, connect and confidence—are key words for you!

EXPRESSION…of tenderness coupled with inner strength is the foundation to rely on. No more can you quake in insecurity and uncertainty relative to the people, places and things in your life. Clear your mind as you quiet your emotions and surrender to that within that has been calling, for it must be answered.

POTENTIAL…for events to take a new turn. Know that whatever you are seeking on the outside is purely a manifestation of what you are yearning for within. As your life begins to move in new directions it is important to keep your sense of equilibrium. You may not be able to control much more than how you respond. Break down any remaining barriers in order to bring things in transition to closure. You are truly asked to leave the past behind.

CHOICE... Stand tall in your chariot of life and allow past negative influences to fade. Understand that you can tend to limit yourself relative to social norms and ideas of success. Go beyond to breakthrough into new areas of feeling, attitude, security and abundance. Be the first to extend the olive branch to those situations that still have meaning and value.

GUIDANCE…and hearing your truth is the task before you now. Do not seek to quiet inner stirrings but realize they are the seeds to birth new desires. You have passed through some important times so gather your energies to prepare for new growth. Old forms in your life are to be blasted away and open the door to challenge yourself. Approach the present with innocence and realizing you need to grow.

GEMINI FULFILLMENT…is a concept that you best think about it. Recognize the importance of desire and clarify yours by writing them down. You are at the beginning of a new upward climb. Follow this path with perseverance, openness, discipline and responsibility. Your desire will code your movement and what you value shall keep your course steady.

RELEASE…the burdens that are really no longer yours to carry. Evaluate how you are perhaps denying certain truths about life and how you approach it. Make way for new and bold ideas and proceed to go forward with determination. Understand that as you make the decision to trust life more it will mirror it back to you tenfold. The clock is ticking….

EXPANSIVENESS…can be yours as long as you are willing to eliminate old behaviours, patterns and attitudes that seek only to undermine your progress and growth. Become more familiar with your strength’s. Understand that that the ego seeks strength from your weakness. Know your limits and strive to make the best choices you possibly can.

SYSTENANCE…is a mixed bag for you. What may feed another holds little for you. It is important to recognize that what can sustain you is the willingness to live outside the norm as well as truly listening to your feelings for they are the light to your truth--your real truth. Agree to develop at least one unique idea over the coming summer. Take on a new project and you will see a brighter light begin to shine!

VIRGO

SAGITTARIUS ENCOURAGEMENT…to make the most of your current situation and realize that the cycle of your life is rising. Understanding and self-respect is the key to lasting relationships as well as the willingness to be transparent in your communication. Take your sword and cleave away all that is unnecessary now. It is only by seeking depth can we reach to new heights!

PISCES

WILLPOWER…is useful to streamline and improve at this time. Marshall your forces, see new potential and accept the presence of paradox in your life as you strengthen self-discipline and strategize refinements. Be aware that situations can be misjudged, at times harshly. Move to make room for more softness, light and laughter in your life. Perfect!

NAVIGATING… Making progress becomes more important so things on the back burner tend to come up front. Try to look at things with an open mind but cool appraisal. Do not paddle against any currents. Take note of the bigger picture while you roll up the sleeves and get to work. As you get more decisive you can resolve much.
