HAIR-RAISING FACTS ABOUT LACK OF EXERCISE (PALM HARBOR, FL April 19, 2012) – If you are a woman and don’t exercise enough – or at all - you are literally making yourself sick. This is the conclusion of a new study released by Oregon State University last month, indicating that inactive women are at a higher risk for developing metabolic syndrome, a group of medical conditions including high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and excessive belly fat. “Even taken separately, each of these conditions can be dangerous to your health,” says John Kent, owner and head coach at North Pinellas Adventure Boot Camp for Women. “Combine them, and your risk for type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke increases.” Should you be worried? It all depends on your level of activity. The study found that women average only about 18 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous daily exercise, far below the recommended minimum of 30 minutes a day. The reasons for lack of physical activity among women range from busy work schedules and family obligations to – incredibly enough – vanity. In an interview with the New York Times last year, U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Regina M. Benjamin noted that because they don’t want to mess up their hair, some women avoid physical activity altogether.

www.tampabaywellness.com

If a busy schedule – not hair – is the reason why you don’t exercise, Kent suggests the following time-saving tips: Plan your sessions early in the morning, before your schedule gets too busy. You’ll be energized for all your day’s activities and won’t have to worry about fitting in a workout later, when things get too hectic. Focus on time-saving but highly effective exercises like interval training, which typically lasts 15 to 20 minutes per session. Ask your trainer to create intervals that are best suited to your needs. About North Pinellas Adventure Boot Camp for Women: Kent launched the North Pinellas Adventure Boot Camp for Women in Oct. 2007. Kent specializes in weight loss for women and in working with women who “hate to workout”. Schedules and client testimonials are available at www.BootCampRocks.com. LifeWorks Offers New Treatment To Cancer Sufferers significant difference in lives LifeWorks Wellness Center, one of the foremost alternative health clinics in the U.S. is now offering a new cancer treatment to patients called Insulin Potentiation Therapy (IPT). IPT is a powerful approach to treating cancer and has been successfully used by doctors since 1946. It selectively targets the cancer cells, while it bypasses healthy cells. Because of this, IPT has little to none of the side effects which regular chemotherapy has. LifeWorks co-founder and Medical Director, Dr. David Minkoff explains, “It is acknowledged that cancer treatment can often be debilitating for patients. In those undergoing treatment

with IPT, an overall gentler experience means they can usually feel strong enough to consider other important elements in our Cancer Care program, such as nutritionally building up their immune system and detoxifying their body. This new protocol should make a significant difference in the lives of cancer sufferers in Tampa Bay, and we are very pleased to be making it available.” For those wanting to know more about IPT or any of the other protocols offered at the clinic, call 727 466 6789 or visit www. lifeworkswellnesscenter.com. 15 common culprits that sabotage your fast fat loss and create weight loss resistance By JJ Virgin, CNS, CHFS

Y JJ

ou diligently eat clean protein at every meal, load your plate with plenty of leafy green vegetables, avoid those 3 p.m. snackmachine calls, and religiously use burst training to blast fat. You step on the scale and… nothing. Reality check: you’re weight loss resistant. You’re not doomed, but you’re going to need some sleuthing to figure out what’s causing those scales to not budge. I commonly see these 15 problems with people who can’t lose weight, all of which dramatically put the brakes on fat fast loss. Discover what’s creating your weight loss resistance and get lean for life.

1. Gut Bacterial Overgrowth. Whether you devour a giant piece of double-stuffed pepperoni pizza or a protein shake, you suffer gas and bloating that progresses throughout your day. You regularly take a probiotic, so what’s the problem? You could have gut bacterial overgrowth. Here’s the story. You need enough beneficial bacteria in your gastrointestinal system for optimal immunity and digestion. However, an invasion of bad bacteria or too much of good bacteria (via your probiotic) can actually increase calorie absorption. Guess where those excess calories land? Yup, around your middle. 2. Sleep. Do you consistently get eight to nine hours of uninterrupted sleep during your normal circadian rhythm (10 a.m. – 6 p.m.)? Researchers at the University of Chicago found even with a perfect diet and exercise, you’re at risk for obesity if you fail to get eight hours of quality sleep each night. The good news is great sleep habits can set you on track for fast fat loss. Read more “How Losing Sleep Can Pack On Pounds” 3. Birth Control Pills. Food cravings, fluid retention, fatigue, and yes, fat gain frequently accompany women who use birth control, which throws your body into a false pregnancy state. Binge eating, insulin resistance, and fat storage often ensue. Discuss with your doctor about other options so you don’t have to fight against your hormones.

4. Hidden Food Sensitivities. Delayed food sensitivities often manifest as skin problems, joint pains, mood disorders, and weight loss resistance. Frequent culprits include wheat and dairy, especially if you crave them and eat these foods frequently. Gut permeability often ensues, where proteins slip through the gut wall and create systemic havoc. NSAIDS, stress, and a bad diet can all create leaky gut. An elimination diet or an IgG test can reveal your food sensitivities. Miraculous things often happen when you trigger and common offenders: you have better skin, feel vibrant, and the scales start moving again. 5. Artificial sweeteners. Those zerocalorie colas can create calorie dysregulation, which means you lose the ability to properly regulate your calorie intake and potentially overeat. Aspartame also depletes serotonin, which can create sugar cravings. Your body also breaks down aspartame via glycation just like it does with real sugar. Glycation ages you and can stall fat loss. If you’ve been sucking down Diet Cokes like they’re going out of www.tampabaywellness.com

style, break your addiction with sparkling water and Emergen-C packets. You might find in the near future you’ve suddenly dropped a dress size or two. 6. Cardio. Without fail, you’re first in line to your Tuesday night aerobics class, and you hustle for that whole hour. So why can’t you lose weight? Endurance training, which involves working out consistently at a heart rate of 70% or more of your maximum heart rate for at least 30 minutes, can raise stress hormones that break down muscle and depress your immune system. This constant adrenal stress slows down your metabolism to conserve energy. Stop wasting hours and your health on the elliptical machine and incorporate burst training. A study in Exercise and Sport Science Reviews, for instance, showed that just 15 minutes of burst training over two weeks improved your fat-burning muscle metabolism. You couldn’t get those benefits with hours of aerobics classes. 7. Snacking. If you’re eating three consistent meals including lean protein, leafy

vegetables, fibrous starches, and good fat, you won’t want that mid-afternoon caramel pecan bun or giant Snickers bar. Balance is the operative word here. Waiting too long between meals to eat raises stress hormones, breaks down muscle, and stores fat. On the other hand, eating every two or three hours raises insulin, which stores fat. Aim for a substantial meal every four to six hours, and make breakfast in particular count. 8. AC and heat. Your body must constantly regulate internal temperature despite how hot or cold the weather gets. While your grandparents easily adjusted to huge temperature shifts, today we expect air-conditioned offices and heated cars. When you must adjust to different temperatures – for instance, cooling you down after a hard workout or heating you up when you’re shivering at the bus stop – your body burns more calories. 9. Caffeine. Coffee comes packed with beneficial antioxidants, but more than one cup carries detrimental effects. For one, caffeine keeps adrenaline around longer, Tampa Bay Wellness • May 2012 13

which can potentially stresses out your adrenals. Too much adrenaline break downs muscle, raises blood pressure and blood sugar, and stores fat. Determine your hidden sources of caffeine, including medications and chocolate. Gradually cut back to one cup of regular coffee and eventually switch to green tea. Green tea still contains some caffeine, but it also offers antioxidants, the calming amino acid theanine, and catechins to help boost metabolism, lower appetite, and support fat loss. 10. Skipping Breakfast. No surprise: many overweight people skip breakfast. Doing so raises stress hormones, stores fat, and wastes precious muscle. Your metabolic rate also slows down, which means you burn less calories throughout the day. You should eat a 4 – 600 calorie breakfast. A study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition showed protein breakfasts keep you full and burn more fat than high-carb foods, so toss your Special K and try a fast fat-loss triggering, no-excuses protein smoothie.

exercise, but ironically, you get worse. That’s because – bam! – your metabolism crashes. The right foods, nutrients, and exercise can get you back on track, calm your stress levels, and blast that stubborn fat. 13. Your Toxic Burden. Everything from the air you breathe to the water you drink constantly bombards you with toxins, which can manifest in numerous ways. You might have a slightly lower-than-normal body temperature. Or you might have a normal TSH level, but your T3 level is chronically low. Sensitivity to smells, insulin resistance, and sex hormone imbalances can also signify a high toxic body burden. Mediclear Plus from Thorne Research in your morning smoothie provides essential nutrients to help your body detox and trigger fat loss.

11. Late Night Snacking. While you sleep, your stomach secretes a hormone called ghrelin, which raises your “fountain of youth” hormone called human growth hormone (HGH). Snacking before bed suppresses HGH and raises insulin. Remember that every food you eat tells your body to store or burn fat. Guess what that 11 p.m. dabbling in a half-eaten pint of Haagan Daz tells your body? 12. Stress. When you get super stressed, you might find you’re not hungry and your energy levels soar. You need little sleep and you’re burning calories. Great, huh? Except that your weight loss is coming from precious muscle, something you most definitely don’t want to lose. Eventually you crash, because your body can’t sustain the chronic adrenal pounding. Suddenly you’re constantly tired, you get sick easily, and you’re late-night craving that stale Entenmann’s cheese strudel even though you ate a substantial dinner. You might respond by cutting calories and bumping up your 14 May 2012 • Tampa Bay Wellness

of low thyroid function include elevated LDL cholesterol, a yellow tinge to skin, thinning eyebrows in the outer third, fatigue, inability to build muscle, depression, constipation, dry skin, low body temperature, and – you guessed it – weight loss resistance. If you suspect thyroid fatigue, get your TSH, free T3 and T4 and thyroid antibody levels checked and look for optimal levels, not normal ranges.

14. Low Stomach Acid.

Chronic stress often manifests as heartburn and bloating after you eat protein. Low stomach acid can impair protein digestion and create gut bacterial overgrowth. For one, stop drinking liquids while you eat. And if you don’t have a history of ulcers, BioGest from Thorne Research can provide adequate hydrochloric acid as well as enzymes to effectively break down protein. 15. Thyroid Fatigue. Despite

your test numbers, you really want to know how well your body converts inactive T3 to active T3. Slightly elevated TSH or low levels of free T3 can be due to low iodine or selenium levels, chronic stress, heavy metals, and gluten intolerance. Thyroid fatigue can impact metabolic rate, sex hormone levels, overall mood and wellbeing, and the ability to build muscle. Common signs

Pregnancy and exercise

extenuating circumstances that may require you to do very light exercise. Some high-risk pregnancies will not allow for exercise so clearing this up with your doctor ahead of time is essential. You must also be aware of the hormonal changes that occur during pregnancy. The hormone “relaxin” helps to ready the body for pregnancy by making the joints more flexible. This increases joint laxity, which puts you at an increased risk of injury to joints. To prevent injury, be sure to avoid quick directional changes. Finding exercises that are basic and suit your needs is the best option. A qualified trainer may be a good option for you during this particular time to ensure your safety and to see that proper

I

n my years of being involved in the health and wellness field I have come across many fallacies. Among one of them is the notion that expectant mothers cannot exercise. I am here to provide the benefits of exercise to a healthy pregnancy in hopes that you will gain some additional tools to making your pregnancy the best possible. There are so many wonderful things for expectant mothers to look forward to! Among them is a healthy and vibrant pregnancy. One of the best ways to ensure this is to continue exercising. It is always good to do your homework however, to ensure the safety of you and your little one. Before you start your exercise plan it is always advisable to discuss your intentions with your physician. There are some

exercise form is maintained. As far as the benefits of exercise on pregnancy, there are many. One of the main benefits is the improved breathing pattern of expectant mommies. Some women find it harder to breath during exercise because of the pressure of the enlarged uterus on the diaghram. You can make allowances for this by doing lighter weights or taking longer rest periods in between sets. Exercise helps to condition pregnant women for the difficult breathing experienced during labor. When the time comes you will be breathing easy and be completely ready for the childbirth experience. Another exciting benefit of exercise throughout your pregnancy is it helps to limit weight gain. The process of incorporating a resistance program and clean diet will help your body in fighting off the cravings which often lead to excess weight gain. It has also been shown to aid in a faster, easier labor and delivery. There are processes before, during and after your pregnancy that can all benefit from exercise such as walking during dilation to the breathing and pushing involved in child birthing. It is not uncommon for an expectant mother to feel fatigue. Your body is undergoing dramatic changes. This is partly due to the fact that your body is now supplying oxygen for two. Exercise is shown to help decrease muscle soreness and fatigue. It has also been shown to relieve basic discomforts of pregnancy from morning sickness to achy legs and backs. Exercise keeps your blood flowing and your body feeling good. While the benefits of exercise on a pregnant woman are profound there are some things to keep in mind. Stay focused on your basic goals. No matter what your fitness level, you must be willing to allow for more rest and be patient with the fact that your body is undergoing many changes. You are preparing yourself to have the healthiest pregnancy possible and the only way to do this is to go at your own pace. For some of you who are used to the “fit” lifestyle, this may require taking a step down. Moderate exercise has been found to be more beneficial over intense exercise. Moderate exercise also decreases your risk of injury. You don’t want to force anything or overwork yourself as this could result in injury instead of benefit. For example, One of my clients, Dee reached her goal of an athletic 10% body fat and found out the same week that she was pregnant! Stopping her routine was not an option so after she consulted her physician I created a plan that effectively helped her exercise throughout each trimester. We did however; take it down a notch in order to make accommodations for daily changes in energy. Dee worked out until she was 38 weeks and then took a small rest to wait on baby Blake. Her progress was so noticeable throughout her labor period that one of the nurses commented, “WOW! We have a fitness Mommy here!” Blake was born after 1.5 short hours of labor. On the same hand, for those expectant mothers who are not used to exercise prior to pregnancy, there is nothing stopping you. It is advisable however, to hire a personal trainer to oversee your exercise form. This is a very delicate time for you to be treading through unknown waters on your own. After all, you are planning to have an injury free pregnancy correct? The basic rules to follow when it comes to pregnancy exercise are as follows: * Avoid overheating, especially during the first 6 weeks. * Avoid exercising on your back for long periods of time; this may www.tampabaywellness.com

lead to reduced blood flow to the heart. * Avoid exercises that require lots of balance, a shift in the woman’s center of gravity occurs due to the increased size of the abdomen. This in turn increases your risk for loss of balance. * Avoid bouncy, high impact exercises. * Be sure to drink plenty of water and stay well hydrated. Eat a healthy well balanced diet with plenty of complex carbohydrates. * Stretch before and after each exercise. * Do not exercise to exhaustion. I hope that you have gained more insight as to the benefits of exercising your way to a healthy pregnancy. Always listen to yourself and your gut instinct. If you feel like exercise is not the best option or your doctor recommends against it there are always a myriad of things you can do to boost the nutrition of you and your baby! Above all, just be positive because nothing works like the feel good emotions of Mommy on your little child!

Why French Women Don’t Get Fat incorporate 4 principles into your life and feel the positive results

L

ast month, one of our patients gave me the book titled French Women Don’t Get Fat by Mireille Guiliano. “I found it at a garage sale and totally thought of you” she said. As a Certified Nutritionist and Wellness Consultant, I counsel groups and individuals on how to reach their health goals through eating whole foods, and I feel fortunate to have been raised in France, where eating for your health is part of the culture. It’s a basic and anthropological truth: French women eat as they like and don’t get fat. Why? Could it be by nature alone? Could the slow wheel of evolution have had time to create a discrete gene pool of slender women? I doubt it. What I have come to understand after living in the USA for almost 20 years and embracing the American culture, is that the French traditionally think and act in relation to food and life in a very different way than what we commonly do on this side of the Atlantic. Sixty-five percent of Americans are overweight, and the fastest-selling books are diet books, most of them now written like biochemistry manuals. And the demand persists. Why? Why don’t the million-copy wonders put a definitive end to our woes? In my opinion: 18 May 2012 • Tampa Bay Wellness

unsustainable extremism! Most diet books are based on radical programs. Apart from a brief Jacobin interlude in the eighteenth century, extremism has never been a French way. America, however, gravitates toward different philosophies, quick fixes, and

extreme measures. These work for a time, but they are no way to live. It does not help matters that one extreme is contradicted by the very next one to gain traction. Who does not remember the high-carb days? Nowadays, carbs and fats are the evil and everything is about proteins.

www.tampabaywellness.com

The truth is, if you only eat one food group, you will eventually get bored with food, so after you stop the radical program, the pounds will come back. Besides, extreme programs lack attention to the individuality of one’s metabolism. So, your call to action is: Banish the diet books today! Ok, so what are the secrets of the French to stay lean? Here are the top four: Secret #1: The French eat slowly: It takes about 20 minutes after you eat for your brain to recognize food has entered your system. So, if it takes you less than that to eat your meal, chances are you will overeat and then feel stuffed before you can realize you have had enough to eat. You cannot rush a French person through a meal. After living in the USA for almost twenty years, I am still the last one to finish my plate at

www.tampabaywellness.com

any meal! Secret #2: The French eat real, wholesome, colorful foods: The body is designed to eat foods, not chemicals. 90% of packaged foods have additives & coloring agents that make them pretty to look at & extend their shelf life. If you can’t pronounce the name of the ingredient and don’t know what it is, don’t buy it, don’t eat it, period. The same goes for any supplement you may be taking. If not made of whole foods, it will poison your body. Secret #3: The French eat high quality foods: The quality of your food (not the quantity) is the most important factor in maintaining a balanced, functional body. So, eat fresh organic produce daily, eat grass fed or wild caught animal foods (at least 80% of the time if budget is tight), drink clean water (meaning filtered or spring), in the

amount of ½ your body weight in oz, daily. As a result, you will: keep most toxins out, lose unwanted fat, sleep better, have more energy, reduce inflammation & pain, build a strong immune system, keep diseases at bay, and even reverse most like arthritis, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, depression, cancer. Secret #4: The French eat with their heads: We no longer work eighteen hours a day in a mine or a farm, and our Paleolithic hunter-gatherer days are long past. Nevertheless, most Americans eat 10 to 30 percent more than

needed, not to survive, but to satisfy psychological hunger. Start eating mindfully, to nourish your body & your mind. This means to pay attention to what you eat, and quit the texting, e-mailing, calling all your clients, watching TV, driving while you eat. I challenge you to start incorporating these 4 principles in your life today and feel the positive results for yourself (and those around you!). Please e-mail me your feedback, as I would love to hear how it is helping you change your life. isabelle@rubinhealthcenter.com

Be Creative and Envision for Yourself a New Landscape

H

ave you ever looked into your clothes closet or peaked in the garage and became overwhelmed by the thought of clearing out the old stuff even though the end result would be creating and optimizing a new space? Have you ever looked at your life and thought “if I could make some changes I would be happier”, but felt overwhelmed by the enormity of the task and didn’t know how or where to start? When you desire a change in your life but don’t know how to get there, be the visionary for change, or as I say; “BE the artist who creates your world”! Most people don’t think of themselves as creative beings but that’s exactly what we are.

20 May 2012 • Tampa Bay Wellness

A person’s thoughts, beliefs, perceptions and attitude is the culmination of an individual. The ability to think is what makes us uniquely different from all other species on earth. It is where our brilliance lies as human beings but can also be our folly. The concept of thought as creative energy that can be harnessed by our mind is easier to grasp when we understand what a thought actually is! According to science, a thought form or an idea is multi dimensional in nature. Thought is a form of energy like a light wave. Energy as we know constantly expands, contracts, and can accumulate and grow. More simply, thought is energy, ideas are creative energy and energy is a part and parcel of light! Since light is fluid and

in constant movement, it is always changing. Even more exciting, is that with focused attention, and utilizing our mind’s creative energy, we can effect change, achieve our goals and create a life of unimaginable joy. Furthermore, since no one can put a thought or idea in your head, no one can influence you’re your life without your agreement. You are in the driver seat to direct and influence the path of your life. You are in effect, the creator of your life within your own mind. So let’s get started harnessing your mind’s energy and creating your own individual brand of artistic brilliance called your life! First, think of an artist who has a new blank canvas sitting on an easel directly in front of www.tampabaywellness.com

them. The next task for this artist is to envision what’s appealing and possible for them to create. Now, think of yourself as this artist or architect of your life. What is it that you desire to have or achieve in your life? Hold this vision of what you desire in the forefront of your mind, see it, give it specific detail and design. If you can think it, imagine it, then mind can conceive of the possibility, therefore mind is already organizing and propelling your energy forward or toward the goal; a completed canvas. Equally as important is to also see the paints and other raw materials that you can work with as well as to note the abilities and resources you already do possess. Remember, we all are creative beings simply by the nature of our grand design. It has been said that Leonardo da Vinci was known to stand in front of a blank fresco wall for 4 days before he put paint to brush! Creating and envisioning first, then following through with action, the stroke of a brush. He was a master at manifesting his vision into a reality. In this case, it was the Last Supper mural that adorns the monastery walls at Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan Italy.

But even the masters at times struggled with completing their vision. For instance, some paint color was expensive and hard to acquire without the help of a patron. Michael Angelo had to figure out how to build a scaffolding to reach the ceiling of the Cistine Chapel at St Peter’s Basilica, in Rome in order to paint it. It has been documented his patron Pope demanded that he paint a blue sash over the figure of Jesus much to his dismay. Also, it was recently discovered with the help of infra-red technology that Leonardo repositioned the arm of Mona Lisa as it rested on her lap. He apparently didn’t like the original perspective and changed his mind! But we do not see the struggles of these artists as we view their work, what we see is the culmination of their vision in it’s totality, the completed work. The beauty is you too can stand back and look at your current canvas in progress and think, “at one time I had a lot of branches and pink flowers but that no longer works

for me-so I want more leaves and the color blue now”. Give yourself permission to change or tweak your current vision. Ask, what is the effect of my past creating and is this still working for me? What do I want to do now with this moment and then the next? Whether it’s tweaking what already exists, creating anew , or a complete do-over get excited about the new possibilities for your life. Take a deep breath, and just begin with an idea, then pick up the brush! Remember the feeling of lightness and accomplishment you felt as you surveyed the garage or closet after discarding the clutter and keeping what was still useful? Imagine how you will feel when peering at your new landscape!

Botox Benefits Is there a Place For it in Your Healthy Life?

B

LOOKING BETTER = FEELING BETTER

eing a holistic person and getting botulinim toxin injections don’t seem to mesh right? Having seen first hand the life changing spiritual effects that minor physical corrections can make on a person I would ask you to reconsider. There was a time that using any chemicals on your body would have sounded crazy and now many of us can’t live without our hair color. Anything can be abused, and it only takes seeing one person with frozen face to be turned off at the idea of botox for life. But you would be shocked at how many people you know who use and love these products. We all have different definitions of what a problem is. To some that deep crease between their eyes doesn’t bother them... and to others it is all they see. Living a holistic lifestyle can also include taking

steps to remedy things that truly affect your self-confidence. Our collective conscious is now more accepting of alternative and new therapies and are integrating them into our lives because they work for us. That’s true. But they work for us not independent of each other. Exercise makes us fit and makes us feel better. Massage and acupuncture have proven to be pain-relieving alternatives that work much better on a fit body. Any woman (and many men) feel like new people after they’ve had a “chemical” hair coloring. We know when we feel that we look good, we feel better and when we feel better, we do better. There is a very intricate and elusive connection of well-being that occurs after self care treatments. We are reminded that we still have much to

contribute, we have input into how we age and that we are of unique value. That sense of “something more” gained from any self-care appointment speaks to holistic theory. An aged appearance conveys misleading information about ones emotional or psychological state. This is especially true when meeting others for the first time but can also influence self-perception. Aesthetic injections can alter one’s perception about themselves and a lifted perception can alter one’s own reality. Botulinum toxins soften the concentration creases that aging can mistakenly reflect as anger lines. Fillers lift and soften and restore one’s sense of who they always have known themselves to be. We are finally moving beyond the stigma and fear associated with botuliwww.tampabaywellness.com

num toxins and facial fillers and these services are finally taking their rightful place in holistic care. Thinking that Botox is a relatively new “cosmetic poison” is not accurate. Botox has been around for over 20 years now and has an excellent safety record in treating many medical conditions. It’s value as an anti-aging tool continues to grow with new research and new applications. And, regarding facial fillers, the most commonly used fillers on the market are made of a sugar structure that is naturally occurring in your body. Hyaluronic acid is naturally produced by your body to replenish that which is lost from the dermis of your skin. Hyaluoronic acid fillers (Juvaderm, Restylane) are truly natural products and no foreign components or preservatives are added. These fillers are totally at home in the soft tissue of the body. Recently, research has proven an additional benefit. When fillers are injected the fibroblasts that actually produce collagen are stimulated, and your own body begins an accelerated process of making new collagen around the filler site. That’s right... fillers are regenerative as well as restorative! This is wonderful progress for care of the aging face. Baby boomers have great tools at their disposal to slow down aging and restore what may have been lost earlier in life. And younger generations can use these tools to slow the process of aging that before now was associated with the ‘old and tired’ appearance. Care of your whole body includes physical, mental and spiritual care. Self-image is a part of it all. Natural changes that occur with aging don’t have to be harsh, (why we love hair color!). This is not vanity and self-indulgent abuses occur with all things. Not changing the things that bother us can lead to a loss of creative spirit and foster a dangerous state of emotional inertia. Whether it is improving our physical fitness, or aesthetic procedure that improves our appearance, positive change is an impetus and can redirect our focus to positives in all the areas of our life. It contributes to the “whole”. A positive spirit is a powerful and beautiful thing. It empowers, it strengthens, it garners strength from others and there is no better armor to have when facing challenges. While those of us that deliver cosmetic injections have had difficulty in fighting stigma and prejudice, the shift is finally changing and with all education fear is dissolved, replaced with acceptance and now finally integrating this component into holistic care. We are now becoming surrounded by a society of empowered people embracing their new resources and thinking creatively. Holistic only gets better when minds are open to safe new options. Taking care of the whole being includes wellness of mind, spirit, and body...and our appearance can reflect the health of all three!

Can An Ancient Spice Prevent and Treat Cancer?

TUMERIC That’s the question researchers are trying to answer. Turmeric is known as a golden gift from God, a sacred spice that has been used for centuries in Indian Ayurvedic and Asian medicine to treat fevers, digestion problems and cuts. Indians sprinkle the powder on cuts to help them heal, gargle with it to soothe sore throats and mix it with warm milk for sick kids to sip. Madhu Sharma, owner of the Green Chili Indian Bistro in St. Petersburg uses turmeric in almost all of her dishes. She says it’s also an important ingredient in other aspects of Indian culture. “We use turmeric when the baby is born. We use turmeric when we get married. We use turmeric when we cook everyday and we use turmeric to worship God and offer to God,” says Sharma. 26 May 2012 • Tampa Bay Wellness

People in India eat turmeric everyday in curry dishes. They cook with fresh turmeric root (a bright yellow herb from the ginger family) or they use the dry powder, adding about one teaspoon to every meal. Daily turmeric consumption is one of the reasons cancer researchers suspect India’s rate for breast, colon, prostate and lung cancer is 10 to 50 times lower than in people in the United States. Dr. Bharat Aggarwal, Ph.D, Professor of the Department of Experimental Therapeautics, Division of Cancer Medicine at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Texas has been studying the spice for several decades. “It has enormous potential. It is very safe. It has been around for a long, long, time and for the first time, I think we have evidence that it may be working as well,” he says. Hundreds of laboratory and animal studies have shown that a subwww.tampabaywellness.com

stance in turmeric, called curcumin, kills a wide variety of cancer cells including colon, breast, prostate, pancreatic, brain and melanoma and slows tumor growth. The preclinical research has taken the spice from the lab to the clinic. “We have shown that a wide variety of tumor cells can be selectively killed by curcumin and it does not kill the normal cells but will kill only cancer cells. There are no known side effects in people,” he says. Dr. Aggarwal says he has gradually given cancer patients up to 8 grams of curcumin supplements (500 mg each) a day without any side effects. He says in addition to eating turmeric in his food, he also takes 500 mg a day. While phase I and plase II clinical trials involving people have been small, 40 have been completed and 40 more are ongoing, Dr. Aggarwal says the spice has a promising future as an inexpensive, non-toxic cancer preventative agent and treatment. “We are of the opinion that inflammation causes cancer and if you can inhibit inflammation you can prevent or even treat cancer. We found that spices are some of the best anti-inflammatory agents available” says Dr. Aggarwal. Dr. Aggarwal and researchers at John Hopkins, UCLA School of Medicine and other cancer centers that have studied curcumin, suspect it fights disease including cancer, alzheimers, arthritis and heart disease by shutting down a powerful protein that promotes chronic inflammation in the body. Chronic inflammation can be triggered by sugary, processed foods, cigarettes, stress and alcohol. But critics say the human trials are too small and don’t last long enough. They wonder how much is actually absorbed by the body. Dr. Aggarwal says he is still impressed, but agrees, more research is needed. Dr. Aggarwal says funding for large, randomized double-blind studies may be tough to find because curcumin can’t be patented on a broad scale. He doubts it will attract the interest and funding from pharmaceutical companies. It’s an inexpensive spice. A kilo sells for about $20.00. 90 Curcumin capsules (500mg), 3 month supply, sell at the health food store for $18.00. In the meantime, Dr. Aggarwal suggests adding more turmeric to your food. Make sure you add a healthy oil (fat) and black pepper. He says your body will absorb turmeric better. He says people who want to take more than one curcumin pill a day, need to start slowly. He says taking too many too quickly can cause nausea and gas. People, like Madhu Sharma, won’t wait for 21st century labs to prove the power of something that’s been handed down from generation to generation. “It’s been an essential ingredient in all aspects of our lives for thousands and thousands of years.” Heather Van Nest is a community leader, Co-Anchor on 10-News and an avid health enthusiast Heather brings a wealth of knowledge and resources to our

Have you considered

Working With A Health Coach to reclaim your healthy self?

R

ecently there has been a lot of buzz around Wellness Coaching. So what is all the noise about this new craze? Quite simply, our nation is very unhealthy, we are grossly over weight, take lots of medications, and keep driving the cost of healthcare higher. As employers, doctors, and insurance companies search for ways to decrease costs, the last resort seems to be “teach healthier life styles to those who are in need”. As a retired nurse who worked in HC for many years, and also as a researcher for cardiovascular disease prevention, I can say “it’s about time we put our attention on our intention to reduce healthcare costs by becoming a healthier nation!!” We have known the risk factors for over 30 years but fast life styles, fast food, and fast profits in the corporate sector prevented us from being conscious about the outcomes of ignoring our health as individuals. If you read Dr. Peter Weiss’ new book, “more health, less care” you will see the perfect scenario explained as to why we have chosen illness over health. “Supersize it” has super sized our illnesses, our medical bills, and our country’s poor report card on health. Our culture has literally bought into the idea that more food is best at the lowest price, highest calorie, highest fat, refined flours and sugars that cost less to manufacture. Restaurants claim they provide us the “home cooked meal” we crave from a buffet. Unfortunately the only home cooked meal IS cooked at home from wholesome ingredients or possibly purchased in a health food store, albeit at a high price. Caution also, “wholesome” can also be high calorie, high fat when not prepared from a low fat, low calorie process. It’s not easy to be healthy.....but is it easier to be sick??? Unfortunately it has caught up to us, as the US ranks highest in the world for obesity, for both adults and children. The triad of diseases 28 May 2012 • Tampa Bay Wellness

resulting from our unhealthy choices begins often with obesity. Then arrives high blood pressure, high cholesterol, high blood sugar leading to heart disease, diabetes, and kidney disease. Once on this downward slippery slope, it can be difficult to overcome, BUT IT IS NOT IMPOSSIBLE. This is not how our bodies were designed to work. We have become dependent on the idea that “the pill” or “the doctor” can fix it, without making any life style changes...like exercise, proper diet, rest, and social engagement. Why coaching makes such a difference in success? Perhaps the greatest difficulty of making life style changes is the mental aspect of making it work. Most people do not believe they can make it happen because of habits, beliefs, and previous failures. Working with a certified coach who is also trained in nutrition, fitness, and health can give you the extra edge you need to succeed. Certified coaches are “mindset masters” teaching you skills in how to think, how to train your brain to start working for you, rather than against you. Like in “The Secret” and Tony Robbins programs, mind over matter works when you know how to use these skills. I am currently working with clients who have seriously compromised health due to the risk factors mentioned above. We see great improvement in their weight management, through physical activity, dietary choices and keeping the positive attitudes and approaches taught by me as their coach. Is it time to do it differently? You bet!! How it works. Engaging a certified coach who is qualified to work as a wellness or healthcare professional, you will experience the following to take charge of your health, your healthcare decisions, and your ability to be in control. 1. Assessment of your current status, including medications, diagnosis, and nutritional

status. 2. Determination of what is most important to focus attention on first . 3. Possible consult with your doctor or healthcare provider to engage their participation in your quest for wellness. 4. Partner with you to design actions that you will take to begin changing your life style choices on a daily basis. 5. Referrals to other appropriate wellness experts for alternative options if necessary. 6. Continuous assessment, support, guidance and celebration of any small sweet success. What is more interesting and important to you? A. Continuing on a path of less health and more expense, more doctors and pills, less flexibility and fun? OR B. Regaining control of your body, your health, and your life through making conscious choices based on knowledge and scientific proof to increase your success of living your most magnificent life? Without your health, your other options in life are limited. If you choose option B you are on your way to health! The most courageous choice for conscious action to regain your healthy self! Natural Sleeptime Remedies There is nothing better than opening your eyes in the morning and feeling rested after a good night’s sleep. Though often ignored, good sleep is one of the cornerstones of health. Six to eight hours every night seems to be the optimal amount of sleep for most adults, but too much or too little can have adverse effects on your health. Studies conducted over the past few decades indicate that chronic sleep disorders may contribute to heart disease, hypertension, stroke, depression, diabetes, and other serious illnesses. Interrupted or impaired sleep also weakens your immune system which needs to remain strong during these winter months to ward off illness and disease. For the estimated 50 to 70 million Americans that suffer from sleep problems, this can be a daunting thing. The problem is worsened during the winter months when we are plunged

into darkness earlier in the day and our lives become more sedentary. If you do not want to rely on drugs or medication, here are some things you can do to get a restful night’s sleep. Try taking a hot bath or shower to help you relax before bedtime. The temperature drop from getting out of your bath signals to your body that it is time for bed. Wearing socks to bed can also help; keeping feet warm throughout the night which prevents nighttime wakings. Listening to relaxation CDs is another excellent way to help your body ease into a restful slumber. Many people like the soothing sounds of the ocean or other nature sounds. There are also CDs on the market that use vibration technology to help you effortlessly fall into a deep sleep. If you want a drug free solution to help before bedtime, there are many options top choose. If you suffer from night time nasal

congestion, a product like Maty’s Breathe Better Nasal Ointment helps alleviate stuffiness. The unique blend of coconut oil, grapefruit seed extract, lemon balm and cayenne pepper helps promote a healthy nasal environment to help you breathe easier throughout the night. Carolyn Harrington is a certified Holistic Health Practitioner and trained in many aspects of natural medication, including nutrition, herbs and various mind/body therapies. Carolyn created Maty’s Healthy Products, a line of all natural, gluten-free products enriched with powerful immune supportive ingredients, which are then formulated into therapeutic blends to enhance the body’s natural healing capabilities. Homeopathy Help for Seasonal Allergies Can homeopathic remedies help with seasonal allergies? The answer is emphatically, yes. This time of the year season allergy suffers are severely challenged, and most wonder how they can function at their highest potential when they are sneezing, blowing their noses and having itchy eyes. Over-the-counter antihistamines are very helpful for some people, while others find that the side effects of the medications; dry mouth and eyes, sleepiness and agitation are often more annoying than the allergy itself. This is why many people now search out homeopathic remedies. Homeopathy is a safe alternative without the side effects of antihistamines. The only real difficulty with homeopathic remedies is finding the correct one to fit the sufferer’s exact symptoms. There are over 3,500 homeopathic remedies and finding the perfect match can take a little time through trial and error, but once the exact match is made, the person will find relief from his allergies. To find the correct homeopathic remedy for

www.tampabaywellness.com

the individual sufferer, it is extremely important to identify the specific symptoms of the allergic reaction. The best way to use homeopathy, is to work with a homeopathic practitioner and find what is called a constitutional remedy. A constitutional remedy is a remedy that helps the person in his entirety; working to prevent the onset of an allergy. In contrast, acute care helps to alleviate the symptoms after they have already taken hold of the individual. While constitutional care is the referred and deepest form of homeopathic treatment, acute care is still amazingly effective. Below are a few suggested remedies that most commonly help allergy sufferers. • Allium cepa 30c- for constantly tearing eyes and lots of sneezing with a profuse watery discharge from the nose. • Arssenicum album 30c- for a burning watery discharge, burning pains in the nose, eyes and throat, and sneezing as if from the sensation of a feather.

• Eurphrasia 30c- when eyes are the area most affected by the allergy and they are red, itchy and burning. The nose may also be stuffy, but not dripping much. • Sabadilla 30c- for a stuffy nose that also drips, and causes constant sneezing in spells. The eyes are drippy. It’s also used when the allergy can be felt in the lungs. • Arundo 30c- for an itchy sensation in the back of the mouth by the soft palate, and inside the nose. The nose is also very stuffy. • Wyethia 30c- for itching in the nose, throat and especially the palate, and when there is tremendous itching in the ears. There is also dryness of mouth and throat. Tears of the Past or Fears of the Future

“I could use a good cry,” you often hear from women. Crying is a way of expressing that which you cannot express. When an infant cries, that’s its way of telling you that he/she is distressed. Common needs of infant cries include the following: hunger, tired, discomfort, loneliness, over stimulation, picking up on other’s stress, close physical contact, needing loving attention and colic (physical ailments). So leaving a child to “cry it out” is like ignoring their needs. Their cries escalate into shrill terror while their heart races and all physiological functions are escalated. Mothers are hard-wired to respond to their baby’s needs. As we grow up, we still need to cry but it is now predominantly emotional release, and we actually feel good afterwards, like we just unloaded a heavy burden. All of our emotions, (worries, fears, joy, happiness, sorrow) stem within our 2nd chakra (belly) and may have been suppressed for too long. When our 2nd chakra is blocked, our upper chakras begin to malfunction. We literally take things to heart. The heart cannot process this emotional garbage, that’s the job of the digesting 2nd chakra. “Big boys don’t cry.” “You are making a mountain out of a molehill.” We’re taught to be 32 May 2012 • Tampa Bay Wellness

strong, to suck it up. But at what cost to our emotional health? I firmly believe that most physical ailments have emotional, mental and spiritual roots. Consider the layers of your aura. Your outermost layer is the egg shell that holds it all together. I perceive this layer as golden flames. Within this egg shell are sub layers. The spiritual layers reside closest to the eggshell and furthest from the body. Next comes the mental layer, the emotional layer and our etheric layer, closest to the body. Your physical body is then the end result of what your energy layers possess. So we are driven by our karma, which may mean we are meant to experience certain sorrow and grief in our lives to learn the life lessons we laid out for ourselves when we were in spirit. So go ahead, feel it, release it….do what it takes to let it go. Most women know that the slightest thing can make us cry. It’s as if the animal shelter commercial has tapped into to a deep reservoir of pain that you haven’t released yet. Let these little things assist you in letting go of the big stuff. Now, if you are in a constant state of sorrow, crying for days on end, you need to consider some deeper healing. It is time to let the past go. By being in a permanent state of sorrow you are not living in the present. You keep thinking of the past wrongs and hurts. Maybe you don’t even know how you got to this state, it’s so buried. An energy and spiritual counseling

session may assist you here. On the flip side, you may be experiencing anxiety on a daily basis. These are fears of the future. Once again you aren’t living in the present moment. What are you worrying about? Are these valid fears? Do you realize the more you think about what “might” happen, the quicker you create that reality? Our future is rooted in present thoughts. So whatever you do to your body or mind today will be reflected 2-4 weeks from now. So stop the vicious cycle now of the monkey mind chatter and be mindful, be present in all that you do and say at this moment. Use positive affirmations daily. Tape them in places you will always see them. Now you are beginning to create the future you desire. It is time to quit blaming others and instead realize that you create everything around you. Your car, your house, your relationship, your job, your clothes, your attitudes, your beliefs are all a product of what you have created to help you experience yourself. It is your choice! You have the power to transform this pain to love. Consider practicing forgiveness and positive affirmations to create the world you want to live in, the emotional/mental state you want to possess, and to draw unconditional loving relationships to you. Know that you deserve that. You are a pure being of light, a divine spark from your Source. Honor your divine essence! VIRGO –The SCREEN…things can be unclear but continue to try to sort out feelings from fantasy and do not take on other’s troubles. LIBRA –FOUNTAIN…is defined as a nourishing force that can support life around it and the same can be said for you. However, now you have reached your own plateau in growth. new experiences that can delight and uplift the senses. Resolve to pay more attention to the guidance you have been receiving but perhaps too busy to follow it! SCORPIO –NURTURE…is needed in all aspects of your life. It is important to evaluate your needs and size up how you are fulfilling them. Take stock of what you have done and plan for the next move. Isolate elements that are no longer desirable while you recognize priorities and draw up a new goal sheet! PISCES- FEELINGS…may not be reciprocated as desired. Let go of unrealistic expectations and search within for what has true lasting meaning and value. Take stock of how past disappointments led to new open doorways. Identify any attitudes that may have unintentionally blocked your way. Do not wait for wrongs to be righted by others. Take action first, be clear in communication and identify what is useful to be gained. Put aside any old regrets.
