Downing Street suggests Boris Johnson forgot about Pincher complaint

No 10 rejects lying accusation

Lord McDonald, the former permanent secretary at the Foreign Office, claimed this morning that No 10 has not been "telling the truth" about the Chris Pincher scandal. The Prime Minister's Official Spokesman rejected the accusation of lying at lunchtime. The spokesman was asked if he was "planning on telling us the truth today". The spokesman replied: "Yes, in short, as ever I will always seek to provide the information I have available to me at the time of each briefing." No 10 now suggests PM forgot about briefing on Pincher complaint No 10 said that the briefing received by Boris Johnson on the 2019 complaint made against Chris Pincher "dates back a number of years". Europe backsliding into a recession are increasing after another big 17 percent hike in natural gas prices in both Europe and in Britain looked set to push inflation even higher. Concerns about how the European Central Bank (ECB) will react were gnawing at sentiment after German Bundesbank chief Joachim Nagel had hit out at the ECB's plans to try and shield highly indebted countries from surging borrowing rates. MUFG's head of global markets research Derek Halpenny said: "It will continue to be very difficult for the euro to rally in any meaningful way with the energy picture worsening and risks to economic growth increasing notably." One frontline trader suggested a major Dollar order in early trading, coupled with the energy price worries, had caused a chain reaction, spilling into equity markets and bond markets as then speeding the euro's fall as it broke through its 2017 low of $1.0340. Investors will now be watching for minutes of the ECB's previous rate meeting on Thursday. John Woolfitt, director of trading at Atlantic Capital Markets, said: "ECB minutes will certainly give a bit more colour into what's going on behind the scenes. "We are cautiously optimistic, but we are also seeing the opportunity when the market has a big bounce up to short into those moves because they don't seem to have the depth."

Exminister Rory Stewart was thrown out of the party for attempting to stop a no-deal Brexit and flatly refused to serve in a Johnson cabinet while running against him as leader. The ex-diplomat and London mayoral candidate has remained a vocal critic of the PM after leaving politics. Mr Stewart, who was a Foreign Office minister while Mr Johnson ran the department during the May government, has repeatedly claimed he is not fit for office. The former Penrith and Borders MP was interviewed for Men’s Health magazine by Alastair Campbell, with whom he hosts a podcast, The Rest Is Politics. Speaking to the former Downing Street insider, Mr Stewart said: ‘I’ve been having dreams about [Johnson], in which I apologise to him. ‘I feel weirdly sorry for him and guilty about how much I feel I have to attack him. ‘He’s a truly monstrous figure, a figure from a morality tale: his appetites, his lies – it’s all so unreal. ‘But I also feel the tragedy of it, what an awful life he’s leading…I think he finds it impossible to tell the truth. ‘The word ‘bulls******g’ is interesting: a liar is aware of the truth and misleads; a bulls*****r doesn’t mind what the truth is…It must be odd to have nothing you really care about.’ Mr Stewart revealed he went on a meditation retreat after leaving his ministerial role following Mr Johnson’s election as party leader. He said: ‘I realised just how angry I was with Boris Johnson. I had been suppressing it. "When you’re sitting there in total silence, you realise the anger and resentment you feel.‘ For me it was Boris Johnson and a sense of such deep disappointment that people I liked in the Conservative Party had endorsed and backed him. On that second retreat it took me five or six days to concentrate on meditation because I was boiling with rage. ‘I couldn’t quite believe that anyone could think that he could be prime minister.’ The former prisons minister said his desire to be PM himself has ‘mostly gone’ but admitted he would ‘love’ to be foreign secretary. With his status in the Tory party reduced to persona non grata under the current PM, a return to frontline politics is a remote possibility. Mr Stewart ruled out switching allegiance to the Labour party in order to achieve his political ambitions, saying: ‘I like Sir Keir Starmer. ‘But if I was to do something for him, it would probably be more as a civil servant than a politician.’ Rory Stewart was speaking to Men’s Health UK ‘Talking Heads’ columnist, Alastair Campbell, in the July/Aug issue of the magazine, on sale from 6th July. The Russians already control most of Donetsk, the second half of the Donbas, and the signs are they are moving to claim the rest of it. The Ukrainian flag dropped on to Snake Island which the Russains claim to be a strategic withdrawal. The past few days have already seen increased attacks on the cities of Sloviansk and Bakhmut in the Donetsk region - and the frontline towns of Krasnohorivka and Marinka are also particularly vulnerable. The areas have been fiercely contested for the past eight years and Putin launched his 'special military operation' in February after unilaterally declaring Donetsk and Luhansk 'independent'. The governor of Luhansk, Serhiy Haidai, said: "The loss of the Luhansk region is painful because it is the territory of Ukraine. For me personally, this is special and tragic. This is the homeland where I was born and I am also the head of the region." They're hoping the arrival of foreign-supplied heavy artillery from America and Europe can help them reverse the tide but it may have arrived too late for the Ukrainians to keep hold of the Donbas. We are the first British journalists to be given access to see the French-made Caesar howitzers which are now being used to try to hold back the Russian military in the Donbas. French President Emmanuel Macron has already supplied 12 Caesars and, after the G7 summit, he committed to providing another six. The heavy artillery is highly valued for its accuracy and can reach targets much further away - up to 30 miles away. The Ukrainian troops from the 55th Brigade who we watched using the Caesars told us the howitzers are much more versatile and offers them a mobility which helps safeguard the crew. The gun can be readied to fire in about 60 seconds flat, and in even less time (about 40 seconds) it can be on the move again to keep out of the reach of enemy return fire. The truck's commander said his men spent 10 days learning how to operate the weaponised truck in France. "What we need is more guns like this," he told us. "More people to help train us. All we need is more ammunition and then everything else we will do by ourselves." They know they're on the backfoot right now but there's still a very high level of optimism about the long-term future here and he had this message for the Russians who're still busy celebrating their seizing of Luhansk. ''It's not for long," the commander says. "We will kick you out and get it all back." For those towns right up against the Russian line of control, where they've been fighting for the past eight years, the immediate future looks decidedly grim. We saw boxes of aid being unloaded for the residents of Krasnohorivka and watched as the aid workers went through a long list of about 6,000 people who they say desperately need help. One of them is Valentina who tells us she saw her neighbour die the day before after a shell landed near her house. The residents feel caught in the middle of this land grab and attacked by both sides.She said: "When you're in the basements, fear just takes you over. It's fear and horror. Just horror." We asked her who she thought was attacking her. "They say it's coming from that side (she points in one direction) but we think it's coming from the other side (she gestures in the opposite direction). It's difficult to know. It's just really scary and I want to say, we just want peace…" Her voice breaks and she sobs unashamedly at the wretchedness of the

situation here. We see a hospital which has been repeatedly bombed. It's barely functioning, has very few patients and even fewer medical staff, with medicines fast running out. They are tactics which are proving successful in the Donbas, which has seen some of the fiercest fighting since the beginning of the war in February, and where Putin has concentrated his military power since the failure to capture the Ukrainian capital Kyiv early on.
