BUILDING DEPARTMENT
CODE CORNER
maintaining a healthy storm water system
Stormwater is water collected from rain storms that must be safely stored, infiltrated into the ground, treated, and then disposed of away from the community. The Stormwater system comprises several components such as swales, curbs, gutters, pipes, pumps, etc., designed to collect, store, and then move the rainwater away from the streets. Its primary purpose is to reduce the depth and duration of road flooding.
We all need to do our part to keep a healthy stormwater system. Do not deposit any form of debris, including grass and other forms of yard clippings, into any catch basin serving the Town’s storm drainage system. Additionally, any fertilizer used on landscaped areas must be Florida Friendly and not be applied when heavy rains are expected. Pet owners should also pick up after their dogs to reduce contamination
Together, we can reduce the impact flooding has on the community and improve the water quality.

july civilian of the month
Parking Enforcement Officer Alain Acosta has been a remarkable support to the Police Department ever since he joined our family from Parks and Recreation in 2010. Aside from his role as a Parking Enforcement Officer, Alain has proven to be an enormous asset to everyone he assists and graciously accepts additional responsibility. He is professional, kindhearted and a respectable representative of the Town of Surfside.
On July 8 at 8:30 a.m., PEO Acosta observed an elderly gentleman struggling with a malfunctioning bicycle wheel in front of Town Hall. He approached the citizen, offered him indispensable and much appreciated assistance. PEO Acosta went above and beyond the call of duty by utilizing his knowledge and experience in restoring bicycles to repair the bike wheel. The citizen was truly grateful for Alain’s compassion and selflessness.
This is only one example of PEO Acosta’s altruistic service to the community he proudly serves. PEO Acosta’s tremendous work ethic continues to be inspiring and unsurpassed. These remarkable characteristics are demonstrated on a daily basis and the integrity Alain exhibits while performing his numerous job responsibilities are evident. Alain performs these praiseworthy actions on a daily basis and wholeheartedly fulfills any task requested of him. PEO Acosta is commended for his self-initiative, kindheartedness, and dedication to the Surfside Police Department. Congratulations to Parking Enforcement Officer Alain Acosta as the recipient of the July Civilian of the Month award…well deserved!

june officers of the month
The Town of Surfside honored the 98 victims, their families and survivors with Remembrance Events on the one-year anniversary of the Champlain Towers South building collapse. A Police Officer’s oath “to protect and serve” was forever redefined June 24, 2021 during this unthinkable situation. Captain Marciante, Sergeant Cruz and Sergeant Matelis proudly demonstrated these characteristics while establishing and executing the action plan for the Memorial Ceremonies. In the overnight hours on June 24 a candlelight vigil was held onsite for invited guests only and a public memorial ceremony took place onsite at 10:00 a.m. with a large crowd in attendance including dignitaries, law enforcement personnel and rescue workers.
As the incident commander, Captain Marciante began planning for this momentous event in May 2022 along with Sergeants Cruz and Matelis. An intricate operational plan providing the highest level of security for the remembrance events was created to include logistics, scheduling of internal and external personnel, and traffic mitigation. As the Security Supervisor, Sergeant Cruz was given the responsibility of securing the interior. As the Traffic and Media Supervisor, Sergeant Matelis was in command of traffic mitigation and exterior security. Both of these essential roles involved coordinating the critical locations for law enforcement personnel to be stationed for maximum efficiency. The Town of Surfside staff assisting were also given guidance and assignments.
Captain Marciante, Sergeants Cruz and Matelis attended several meetings, walk throughs, and briefings in order to ensure both events ran smoothly and safely for all assisting with the services as well as in attendance. Furthermore, the preparation for the memorial involved countless hours and extra-long work days.
It is always gratifying to observe members of the Police Department performing praiseworthy actions and recognized for their extraordinary service to the community. Captain Marciante and Sergeants Cruz and Matelis are commended for embracing this immense undertaking and completing it exceptionally well. Congratulations to Captain Antonio Marciante, Sergeant Marian Cruz and Sergeant Jay Matelis as the recipients of the June Officer of the Month award…well deserved!

KING TIDE AWARENESS
several king tides are expected this season
It’s that time of year again when we need to be prepared for the possibility of “sunny day flooding” in Town. King Tides are predicted for Miami-Dade County this fall season.
This natural phenomenon typically takes place during the fall months when tidal forces from the sun and moon bring out the highest tides of the year, oftentimes leading to flooding.
Here are safety measures you can take in order to prevent any potentially dangerous outcomes:
Do not drive through floodwater. It may be deeper than it appears, or it could contain debris that may damage your vehicle.
Do not park your vehicle in low lying areas.
• Properties in low lying areas should use flood mitigation options such as sand bags.
Prohibit children from playing in flood water. Again, there may be debris, in addition to wildlife or pollutants picked up from the environment.
