MESSAGE FROM THE TOWN MANAGER

Summer is in full flight as days grow longer and the sounds of camp fill every space at the Community Center. Of course the weight of the late June Surfside Remembrance events is still heavy in our hearts. We look forward to bringing you a recap in next month’s issue. As we transition to a fuller sense of normalcy in the wake of the pandemic, we appreciate the sacrifices that so many, including our camp vendor and parks staff, had to endure for so long. It feels good to be back at 100% this year, and so are a number of Surfside summer staples including the Parks & Recreation Fourth of July event. Come out to enjoy swim races, live music and games from 3 to 5 p.m. before enjoying the Fireworks Show on the beach at 9 p.m. The Tourist Board will be presenting the return of Summer Fridays, a hit beach event series that has not taken place since 2018 due to beach renourishment and the pandemic. The series will feature unique themes and activities, food, music and more. Stay tuned to our communications channels for updates. I’m proud to highlight two Surfside businesses for outstanding achievements in the culinary world this season: The Surf Club Restaurant, located at the Four Seasons Hotel at The Surf Club, was one of only 10 restaurants in Greater Miami to receive a coveted MICHELIN Star in the brand new 2022 MICHELIN Guide Miami, Orlando and Tampa.. Harding Avenue’s modern classic Josh’s Deli was also featured by Michelin in their online Point of View dinning guide. Congratulations on these world-class achievements! Thank you for calling Surfside home.

PUBLIC WORKS BULLETIN PUBLIC WORKS BULLETIN new & improved nature areas coming soon

Surfside’s Public Works Department is building a new nature area and walk path at the 89th Street Beach End. Construction started on May 25 and will be completed this summer. The nature area will consist of a shower, bicycle security stations, benches, new paver walk paths and trees that will provide shade to beach travelers

The department also started rebuilding the 90th Street Beach End walk path and nature area. Construction began on June 1st and will be completed this summer. The work consists of replacing the original damaged pavers, adding irrigation, adding turtle friendly lighting and improving the overall experience for town residents and visitors.

safety first! reducing workplace injuries sewage clean-out

The Public Works Department recently completed annual ergonomic training for heavy lifting at Town Hall. The training helps reduce workplace injury by informing employees on proper lifting techniques and procedures. The Public Works Department is requesting that all Surfside residents locate their sewage clean-out cap on your private property. If you are missing a green clean-out cap, please notify the Public Works Department immediately. The green cap needs to be secured on the clean-out at all times.

If the cap is removed, it will expose the towns sewer system to contamination and potentially cause backups. Example contaminants: Iguanas or small rodents, debris, trash, sediments (e.g., Rocks, Pebbles, sands, etc.) and direct water exposure.

Some green clean-out caps were removed during the 6/4/2022 Storm which exposed flood waters to the sewage system. As a result, the lift stations were overwhelmed with storm water which caused a full-system overload.

During major tropical storms, many municipalities are exposed to the same water hazards. This factor decreases the efficiency of Miami-Dade’s sewer system. Additional exposure to storm water dramatically reduces the efficiency of the Towns sewer systems performance by upwards of 90%.

The Public Works Department strongly encourages residents to never remove, tamper or modify their green clean-out cap. For more information Please contact Public Works at (305) 861-4863 or visit townofsurfsidefl.gov.

PUBLIC WORKS BULLETIN

88th street beach end restoration

Arbor Day 2022 hit differently this year as the Town took to 88th Street Beach End to restore the street end site of the tragic Champlain Towers South building collapse. The Town has been continuously making repairs and this was the last piece of the puzzle. Eighty-eighth Street is now open to the public. As part of the restoration efforts, the area roadway was redeveloped and over two dozen native seagrapes were planted. Additionally, the Town’s dunes that were damaged were restored.

CODE CORNER

construction hours and prohibited noises

The Town of Surfside has ordinances regulating the days and hours of construction work and prohibited noises. All residents, businesses, developers, and contractors must adhere to and follow the ordinance requirements.

All construction activities that require a building permit, such as electrical, plumbing, mechanical, roofing, and structural work, are restricted to Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and are prohibited on Saturdays and Sundays and all federal holidays. However, some activities, such as work related to infrastructure & utilities, roadways, and other public right-of-way construction, are exempted as well as minor repairs and maintenance activities such as painting the interior of a property with manual tools (no commercial sprayers).

The Town’s Noise Ordinance has additional rules and regulations regarding noise generated on weekends and federal holidays from commercial landscapers.

For any questions, don’t hesitate to get in touch with the Town’s Code Compliance Division at (305) 861-4863, extension 233.
