TOW N M A N AG E R This month, many of our residents return from summer vacation and our community starts to feel whole again with the approach of the new school year. It sure has been a busy summer; June 24 brought our whole community (and beyond) to an emotional standstill as we reflect on the painful loss of our lost family and neighbors in the first anniversary of last year’s collapse. Read on through to learn more about those very special events. While we await a permanent memorial, we are grateful to Senator Jason Pizzo and the state for designating that portion of Collins Avenue as 98 Points of Light Way in a poignant gesture of remembrance. Summer of 2022 also leaves plenty of positive memories behind. We officially introduced Officer Mike to the world and the Parks & Recreation Fourth of July event was a huge success capped off by a stunning fireworks display. Meanwhile, the Tourist Board held music concerts on the beach and welcomed back Summer Fridays for the first time in four years just last month. Remember, warm temperatures will continue to stick around through the fall, which means dangerous storms are still possible. Hurricane Season runs until November 30, so don’t let your guard down and make sure you are properly stocked up on supplies! A n d r e w H y a t t , To w n M a n a g e r

honoring those we lost On Friday, June 24, 2022. The Town of Surfside began a series of events to commemorate the 98 souls lost in the tragic building collapse of June 24, 2021 and its survivors. In the works for several months, the series was planned by a dedicated committee driven and directed by family members of those who passed away.
The first event was an intimate vigil held on site at 1:24 in the morning – the exact time of the collapse last year. Exclusive only to direct families of the deceased, the somber event began with attendees reuniting with the heart markers that had been placed at the Wall of Home memorial last year on behalf of each person. HistoryMiami graciously delivered them to the site. Inside the event tent, the names of each person deceased was read out loud by members of Miami-Dade Fire Rescue; at the same time, a torch was lit on behalf of that person by their family member or designee. Photo by Ashlyn McKibben
The morning’s Surfside Remembrance Event brought families and survivors together with additional search and rescue personnel from across the country. Elected Officials and the public also joined to offer their love and support. The tented space accommodated nearly 1,100 people and included a stage platform and a media staging area.

honoring those we lost Led by Surfside Mayor Shlomo Danzinger, the event included the participation of United States First Lady Dr. Jill Biden, who spoke passionately about the fellowship of loss and the power of love. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis also supported the event, announcing that the State has officially renamed the 100-blook of 88th street to 98 Points of Light Way in honor of the 98 victims. Florida State Senator Jason Pizzo, who introduced that bill in the legislation, was also in attendance. In a true showing of global solidarity, Israeli Consul General Elbaz-Starinsky spoke on the deep ties between the two nations, a sentiment echoed by Homefront Command Major General Ori Gordin who also spoke and attended with a delegation of officers deployed to assist search and rescue efforts last year. Key search and rescue personnel from all sectors were presented with an honorary commemorative coin custom-designed for the occasion on behalf of the Town.
Later that same Friday, a dinner gathering was held exclusively for the families of the deceased with top search and rescue personnel. No cameras, members of the public or Elected Officials were allowed. The setting allowed for close interactions and privacy. The same event was extended to survivors of the collapse on Saturday, June 25 during lunch. Photo by Ashlyn McKibben

Media outlets from around the region gathered to learn more about the back story behind Mike and his arrival in Surfside. Joining the Town Manager, Mayor, Police Chief and Captains at the event were the Vice Mayor, K9s For Warriors CEO Rory Diamond, Miami-Dade County Commissioner Sally Heyman and other Elected Officials. . The friendly Goldendoodle is trained to provide care and comfort to first responders, and the Surfside community, one year after the tragic Champlain Tower collapse. In partnership with K9s for Warriors, Officer Mike provides positive energy and emotional support for officers, staff, families, and first responders exposed to traumatic events in the line of duty. Six months in, he is already having a tremendous impact on the Surfside community.
Determined to end veteran suicide, K9s For Warriors is the nation’s largest provider of trained Service Dogs to military veterans suffering from PTSD, traumatic brain injury and other traumas. With most dogs coming from high-kill rescue shelters, this innovative program allows the K9/Warrior team to build an unwavering bond that facilitates their collective healing and recovery. This treatment method is backed by scientific research (from Purdue University’s OHAIRE Lab) demonstrating Service Dogs’ ability to help mitigate their veteran’s symptoms of PTSD while simultaneously restoring their confidence and independence. Be on the lookout for Officer Mike at town events!

The Underground Facility Damage Prevention and Safety Act, Chapter 556, Florida Statutes requires anyone who is digging or disturbing the ground to contact 811 and have underground facilities marked no less than two full business days before beginning any excavation or demolition. Not performing this action can result in extensive property damage at your expense by unintentionally damaging Public or Private property. Please call 811 and request your ground utilities be marked before you dig. If you have any comments, questions or concerns about 811 Sunshine, please call the Public Works Department at 305-861-4863 or email at publicwork@townofsurfsidefl.gov.
“s h a r e t h e r o a d” r e s p o n s i b ly When driving through residential areas, remember, the roads are shared. Pedestrians use the roadway to walk, motorized vehicles use the roads to commute, and other non-motorized vehicles use the roads as an alternative method to commute and exercise. Let’s all do our part!. Cyclists are required to follow the rules of the road similar to a vehicle. Pedestrians should ALWAYS look both ways before crossing any street. Vehicles should exercise caution with cyclists and pedestrians and abide to the posted speed limit. The Public Works Department recently installed new signs throughout Town to remind everyone to “Share the Road,” responsibly.

CODE CORNER
s u m m e rt i m e a n d m o s q u i to s e a s o n a r e h e r e Summertime is in full swing! This means more outdoor activities such as picnics, beach days, barbecues, and time spent at outdoor parks are more common this time of the year. You might notice that summertime also means more mosquitoes; this is why you must be proactive in protecting your family and neighbors by removing anything that could attract mosquitoes and help their breeding. Here are a few suggestions: •
Remove standing water in and around your property. Check and drain water from house gutters, garbage cans, toys, flower pots, or any container where water has accumulated.
•
Ensure that boat and car tarps do not collect water.
•
Maintain swimming pool pump equipment and water chemicals in check.
•
Ornamental plants, such as Bromeliads, can hold water between their leaves. If you have them at home, flush the water out of your plants or coat the water with a bit of food-grade oil.
•
Cover windows, doors, and porches with screens.
•
Mosquitoes are most active at dawn and dusk; if you must be out during this time, cover your skin with clothing and apply mosquito repellent.
Please report any unkempt pool or any other accumulation of standing water to the Town’s Code Compliance Division at 305-861-4863, ext. 233. You can also report any mosquito nuisance areas to Miami-Dade County by dialing 311

If you find a dead, sick, or injured sea turtle or hatchling(s), you can contact Teal Kawana – 305-310-3046 with MDCSTCP directly. You can also call FWC’s 24-hour Wildlife Alert Number at 1-888-404-3922. Please be prepared to answer the following questions: 1. What is the exact location of the animal? 2. Is the turtle alive or dead? 3. What is the approximate size of the turtle? 4. Is the turtle marked with spray paint? 5. What is the location of the closest access point to the turtle? (During your phone call , you may receive further instructions from MDCSTCP staff on what to do depending on the status of the sea turtle.)
