APRIL 2018

Message From The Town Manager

Thank you to the 902 Surfsiders who took the time to vote during the Town election. Voting is a privilege and the backbone of our democracy. Congratulations to the winning candidates who will lead our Town for the next two years: Mayor Daniel Dietch, Vice Mayor Daniel Gielchinsky, Commissioner Barry Cohen, Commissioner Michael Karukin and Commissioner Tina Paul (see below). When it comes to making improvements and positively impacting our Surfside community, the possibilities are endless. However, change is not instantaneous nor can change happen without the support of dedicated volunteers. This is why we are thankful to our residents who volunteer their valuable time to serve on boards and committees, and to our elected officials who spend countless hours identifying civic needs and working towards a safer, brighter future. As a beach town, we also are focused on ways to support the environment and to build a more resilient community. The Town of Surfside recently adopted an ordinance to ban plastic straws, which pose a threat to the ocean and marine life including our beloved sea turtles. Additionally, our annual Earth Day celebration will take place on April 22 (page 10) and we are once again joining the National Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation in April (page 3.) We encourage you to become involved in our community - you too can make a difference. Wishing you and your family a wonderful spring season filled with new beginnings. - Guillermo Olmedillo, Town Manager

CODE COMPLIANCE CORNER

PLASTIC STRAWS ARE PROHIBITED

On March 13, 2018, the Town Commission created a new Town Code Section 34-11, prohibiting the distribution, sale or use of plastic straws. The new ordinance goes into effect on May 1, 2018. The intent of the ordinance is to reduce plastic pollution in the ocean to protect the environment and sea turtles, whose nesting season begins on May 1. The distribution, sale or use of plastic straws will be prohibited in commercial establishments, Town facilities and property, or by any special event permittees. The prohibition does not apply to prepackaged drinks sold at commercial establishments, to medical or dental facilities, to school districts or county, state or federal governmental entities. Civil fines will be assessed for the violations. Commercial establishments will be issued a civil fine of $150 per violation and individuals will be issued a civil fine of $25 per violation. For further information regarding this new Town Code, contact the Code Compliance Division at (305) 861-4863.

Surfside Again Taking the Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation The Town of Surfside is again doing its part to conserve precious drinking water. Residents are joining in the National Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation throughout the month of April 2018. The Ninth Annual National Mayorʼs Challenge for Water Conservation is a friendly non-profit competition between cities across the country from April 1–30, 2018. POLICE BEAT

FEBRUARY OFFICERS OF THE MONTH

Officer Tammy Campbell was dispatched to a call regarding a sick or injured man on Collins Avenue. Officer Campbell found a man laying on the ground. The man stood up and began waiving a screwdriver in a threatening manner. Officer Campbell requested emergency backup officers, drew her taser and ordered the subject to drop the screw driver. The subject refused to comply. Not knowing if the subject was in possession of additional weapons, Sergeant Julio Torres grabbed him from behind and brought him to the ground. The subject was handcuffed without incident and no one was injured. As a threat to himself and others, the man was taken to the hospital for a mental health evaluation. Officer Tammy Campbell displayed courage and restraint while dealing with this dangerous situation. Her demeanor during this high stress incident was calm and professional. Sergeant Julio Torres placed
