The SEGD Global Design Awards celebrate the best in experiential graphic design, spanning a wide range of topics, disciplines and verticals; what all of the projects share is their effective use of design to connect people to place.

Welcome to the golden edition of our annual awards publication, SEGD23. This year, we celebrate an exciting milestone: 50 years of driving design excellence and setting industry standards in the world of experience design. Our esteemed fellows, laureates in the field, and the “best in class” Global Design Awards continue to raise the bar and influence other fields by being at the forefront of design practice.

Since our inception in 1973, SEGD has been a beacon of innovation, promoting human-centered design in the built environment. Half a century later, our mission remains steadfast—to “advance the profession of experiential design through education, inspiration, connection, and advocacy.” The work we showcase exemplifies this dedication and the unparalleled design expertise we foster.

Since 2016, this publication has been a rich canvas of creativity, insight and relevance, displayed through the SEGD Achievement and Global Design Awards. It serves as a source of inspiration and a record of our multidisciplinary community’s achievements, setting a high benchmark for experience design.

The 2023 SEGD Achievement Award winners are not just laureates and innovators but also champions of significant, purposeful design. This past March, the SEGD Fellow Committee convened to review the nominations for the 2023 SEGD Fellows; the committee chose Wendy Evans Joseph and Bruce Mau. In recommending this class of Fellows for confirmation, committee chair Michael Reed stated that “these individuals’ accomplishments and contributions to the practice and advancement of environmental and experiential graphic design exemplify the highest ideals in uniquely different aspects of practice and leadership.”

Wendy Evans Joseph, the founder of Studio Joseph, is a visionary architect known for her hands-on approach and unwavering commitment to design excellence. With a deep passion for art, culture, and public education, Wendy has established herself as a leading figure in museum design and exhibition installations. At Studio Joseph, she sets the vision for each project based on specific parameters and broader societal values that talk about equity and community.

Under Wendy’s leadership, Studio Joseph has delivered a diverse portfolio of impactful public, institutional, and cultural projects. The firm creates immersive environments that foster shared learning and engagement. Wendy seamlessly integrates technology, graphic design, and materiality in elegant spatial settings. Her ability to fuse architecture with other disciplines has garnered accolades and recognition throughout her career.

Wendy’s contributions to the architectural community extend beyond her exceptional design work. She has been honored with a Rome Prize in Architecture from the American Academy in Rome and holds the prestigious title of Academician of the National Academy of Design. Actively involved in professional leadership, she has held esteemed positions such as President of the New York Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, Chairman of the AIA National Committee of Design, and President of the Architectural League of New York.

Prior to establishing Studio Joseph, Wendy spent twelve years at Pei Cobb Freed & Partners, where she made significant contributions to large-scale public, institutional, and cultural projects. She received her Bachelor’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania and pursued her Master’s in Architecture at Harvard Graduate School of Design. She is a LEED Accredited Professional reflecting her dedication to sustainable design.

With her keen design sensibility, unwavering dedication to artistic and educational imperatives, and forwardthinking approach to the architectural practice, Wendy Evans Joseph continues to shape the industry and leave a lasting impact through her transformative work at Studio Joseph.

How did you get started in design, and what set you on your professional path?

Architecture offered the perfect connection between my innate ability with math and my passion for drawing. I started my studies at the University of Pennsylvania, where the philosophy was based on the idea of man living with nature. Our way of thinking about design was that of no boundaries between disciplines—architecture, landscape design and interiors are part of one continuum. This early education served as the basis for how I navigated my professional path. We were taught by landscape architects, planners and architects in a collaborative studio experience.

After finishing at Penn, did you start working, or did you go back to school?

After Penn, I worked for a design firm and then pursued a master’s degree in architecture at Harvard. Upon graduation, I joined the office of I.M.Pei (PCF), where I remained for 12 years.

At PCF, I worked on large-scale buildings and skyscrapers. But the pivotal moment in my thinking about architecture came when I worked on the Holocaust Memorial Museum as the lead designer. It made me realize that architecture is not mute; it can talk to the human experience. From then on, I only wanted to be involved in projects that supported my values and would reflect my design ethos.

Do you consider yourself an architect or an experience designer?

I am an architect, but my practice of architecture goes beyond just making buildings. It embraces societal values, the environment, and storytelling. I see architecture as a way of thinking about design that navigates all facets of the constructed world. In my practice, Studio Joseph, we are both a traditional architecture firm and an experience design studio. The two disciplines are intertwined, informing each other.

Can you share some projects that you are most proud of?

One project I am proud of is “Starlight,” an installation at the Museum of the City of New York. This large light installation reflects the institution’s classically iconic and modern aspirations. Another project is “Senses: Design Beyond Vision” at the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum. The exhibition highlights the real meaning of accessibility, exploring all human senses. These projects changed the way we practice.

What drives your practice and interests as a designer now?

My goal is to work on projects with strong cultural or educational imperatives that support anti-racism and acknowledge our past. I like bringing people from diverse backgrounds into leadership. I want to make a difference by exploring what makes us who we are. With José-Luis Vidalón and Monica Coghlan, we focused on building a firm with broadened in-house capacity for fabrication and media concepting. We are rethinking our role in the design process, being involved from day one, and engaging in community sessions to the last detail.

How does your firm maintain a high standard of design excellence on all projects, even those with small budgets?

Thank you for recognizing our efforts. It’s true that many of our projects don’t have the luxury of major funding. However, we’ve been known for doing a lot with a little, creating something unexpectedly special. We focus on non-traditional materials and ways of building that are more efficient. Our approach involves making one or two strong visual and emotional connections with the visitor. We rely on trusted fabricators, experimenting with new printing methods and techniques, and ensuring thorough testing before building. This allows us to manage resources effectively while still delivering the effects the curators require.

Given the evolution of architecture, museums, and what we now refer to as experience design, what is your hope for the future of our field of practice?

I am very optimistic and ambitious for the future. We are facing significant global issues like environmental crises and social inequalities, revealing the fragility of humanity. I believe the way forward is through education and experiential design. This involves creating spaces for learning outside the traditional classroom, telling untold stories and histories, and fostering empathy and community engagement. We must ensure our designs are sensitive and accessible to people of all abilities.

What role does SEGD play in fostering the type of collaborative and innovative work that you advocate for?

My experience with SEGD has been a revelation of collegial spirit, where professionals with different skill sets come together. Unlike the world of architecture, which often emphasizes individual creation, SEGD fosters an atmosphere of collaboration within the profession. It’s a supportive community that encourages us to work together. I see tremendous potential for what we can accomplish in the coming years under the auspices of SEGD. The society has already made a significant impact in its 50 years, but I believe we are just scratching the surface of what can be achieved.

Renowned designer, visionary, educator, author, and artist Bruce Mau has vastly expanded the notion of design and its potential to solve the world’s most wicked problems. Driven to address the compounding crises of our time, in his forty years as a design innovator, Bruce has transformed the field into an approachable systemsbased method of empowerment — life-centered design — for the betterment of all living things.

Bruce is the Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Massive Change Network (MCN), a global design consultancy in the Chicago Area which deeply collaborates with leading brands and companies, cultural organizations and heads of state to contextualize their worlds, take action and accelerate positive change. To do this work, Bruce evolved the 24 Massive Change Design Principles — MC24 — which can be applied in any field or environment at every scale. The MC24 Design Principles underpin all of Bruce’s work, from designing carpets to cities, books to immersive exhibits, social movements to brand identities, and fonts to strategic frameworks.

Books are central to Bruce’s purpose in communicating and inspiring completely new ways of thinking and living. He has contributed to the development and design of more than 250 books in total. In 1985, Bruce designed Zone Books’ groundbreaking inaugural double issue, “ZONE 1 | 2: The Contemporary City,” and he continued to serve as Zone Books’ design director for the next two decades. In 1995, Bruce collaborated with Rem Koolhaas to conceive the landmark architecture book, “S,M,L,XL.” As an author himself, Bruce’s books grapple with our increasingly complex and changing world, while contributing proven design principles for actualizing optimistic outcomes. Some of Bruce’s texts include:

“MASSIVE CHANGE;” “MC24: Bruce Mau’s 24 Principles for Designing Massive Change in Your Life and Work;” and “THE NEXUS: Augmented Thinking for a Complex World — The New Convergence of Art, Technology, and Science” with author Julio M. Ottino.

Designing a path forward for the next generation, in 2022, Bruce and MCN Co-Founder Aiyemobisi “Bisi” Williams launched MASSIVE ACTION, a new global initiative to inspire and empower 100 million designers with the mindset and tools of life-centered design. Launched in Sydney at the University of New South Wales Arts, Design & Architecture, MASSIVE ACTION demonstrates the possibility of design to confront and overcome our most urgent challenges. Building an ecosystem of actionist friends and institutional partners, MASSIVE ACTION is currently ramping up for its next level of engagement.

Bruce’s work and life story are the subject of the feature-length documentary “MAU,” which premiered at SXSW in 2021 and continues to bring design into the cultural spotlight.

In the film “MAU,” you mentioned being a geeky kid from Sudbury. Can you share a bit about your childhood and what inspired you to pursue a career in design?

I grew up on a farm outside a mining town in northern Canada, about five or six hours north of Toronto. My first trip to the city was for my college interview, which blew my mind. I had a farm life, and our house didn’t have running water in the winter. I had to bring water to the house every day from the well in the valley using my snowmobile. It was an extreme environment with long winter months and temperatures as low as minus 40 for weeks on end. Design wasn’t really a part of my life until I started the college application process and met a man named Jack Smith.

What impact did Jack Smith have on your journey?

Jack Smith ran a program called Special Art, and he allowed me to join his program despite my lack of art classes and portfolio. I needed to build a portfolio for college applications, and he created a place where I could explore anything my mind directed. I fell in love with art and gave up everything else <laugh>, much to the dismay of my family- except the water, of course. Despite the challenges, I managed to get into art school, which had an equally mind-blowing effect. But as I progressed, I did not do well in school. I discovered I was in art School, not Art school, and I just could not fit into their matrix. So I left and got a job as a designer.

Your design style is a synthesis of British and Swiss traditions. Can you elaborate on how these influences shaped your work?

My family background, with Dutch, German, and Polish roots, played a role in shaping my design sensibility. I admire the storytelling, humor, and humane quality of British design, exemplified by my time at Pentagram, London. At the same time, I am drawn to the Bauhaus and Swiss design traditions for their precision and clarity. Combining these elements naturally shaped my unique approach.

At what point did you realize your role as a designer could also be a changemaker? Was there a defining moment or a call to action?

While in London, I desired my work to have a greater purpose. Dedicated to making the world a better place, I decided to go out on my own. That’s when I and two partners founded Public Good, a design company committed to advancing positive causes. Although it was challenging at times, this path felt right for me. The design community’s reaction was mixed <laugh>, but having a clear mission under the name Public Good, helped us stay focused on our purpose.

Can you give an example of some projects where you felt your design had a significant impact on the world?

One significant project was with the Nurses Union. We campaigned to change public perception and give the Nurses Union the recognition they deserved. It was a game-changer for them and improved their position within the medical system. Throughout my career, I’ve been fortunate to work with amazing, generous, and brilliant people. It’s been an incredible journey as a designer.

You mentioned “Life-Centered Design.”

Can you explain its essence and how it differs from human-centered design?

Life-Centered Design expands the design brief to prioritize all of life, not just humans. The goal is a happy life, not just a happy human. We need to consider the context in which humans exist, including their family, community and ecology. Solving problems out of context can lead to damaging consequences, such as species loss and environmental disasters. We need to think differently about the brief and avoid compressing it. Instead, we should embrace a broader perspective to create a positive impact.

Your commitment to purposeful design is commendable. Any advice for young designers entering the field in today's critical times?

I encourage young designers to recognize the opportunity they have at this pivotal moment in history. Embrace purpose-driven design that contributes positively. That’s where designers will win the day. We have the ability to do that. SEGD members can do that.

It’s been a joy learning about your design journey. You mention you're not an “organization” fan. Can you share why you make an exception for SEGD?

SEGD has been a part of my work since the early days. Although I’m not a big organization guy, I made an exception for SEGD. You do an excellent job of providing for your members, helping them understand changes and opportunities, and connecting them.

Product and Visual Design Lead, Coginzant SEGD Distinguished Member Award

The SEGD Distinguished Member Award recognizes an individual for demonstrating outstanding volunteer efforts while significantly contributing to the direction, growth and excellence of SEGD programs. Past winners include Christina Lyons and P. Michael Anderson.

Since 2007 Annelle Stotz has dedicated herself to SEGD, progressing from volunteer to Chapter Chair to Board Member. Transitioning from a design firm to working directly for clients, she seized an opportunity to engage owners as potential new SEGD members. During the pandemic, Annelle relocated abroad—becoming an international member—and steadfastly supported SEGD, even without employer assistance. As Auction Chair and alongside Kris Helmick, she launched the SEGD Membership Committee, magnifying its impact through initiatives like “Membership March” and monthly new member calls to create meaningful first connections with new members.

Can you share about your initial attraction to design and how it has influenced your work?

I have always loved creating–drawing, painting, writing. When considering my college education, I was interested in design and law. Growing up in Cincinnati, I was naturally drawn to the design field, largely influenced by the city’s renowned design school, DAAP. Design is more than just creating—it’s about solving problems and curating experiences that encourage societal engagement, something I find incredibly rewarding.

Which projects have significantly shaped your career?

My early professional experience in Frankfurt with Kolar Design was a defining time, especially working on an innovative project for Procter & Gamble in Beijing. It taught me the value of responsibility and autonomy. My career took a turn when I moved to Seattle and joined IA Interior Architects, working on a challenging project for Amazon. This demanded strategic thinking, resilience, and creativity, which significantly boosted my professional growth.

How did your journey with SEGD begin and evolve over the years?

In 2007, I started as a volunteer for SEGD and progressively moved up to the role of Chapter Chair and then Board Member and Auction Chair. I found a unique approach to connect with clients and saw an opportunity to introduce them to SEGD. Despite relocating internationally during the pandemic and without any employer support, I remained a steadfast member. With Kris Helmick, I established the SEGD Membership Committee, launching initiatives like “Membership March” and monthly new member calls to foster immediate connections.

How has SEGD played a role in your career, and why do you consider your participation important?

My time in Frankfurt made me realize the importance of having a professional network, prompting me to prioritize joining SEGD upon moving to Seattle in 2013. My tenure as a Seattle Chapter Chair from 2014-2019 was an enriching time where I built my credibility, cultivated

knowledge, and promoted professional growth. I was also introduced to public speaking during the 2016 annual conference, “Experience Seattle,” pushing me out of my comfort zone. When I joined the Board in 2020 during the pandemic, I was tasked with sustaining the organization, which I tackled by launching new initiatives and establishing the membership committee.

What advice would you offer to emerging professionals in experience design?

I would emphasize four things: embrace discomfort, it aids growth; be resilient, use your strengths to overcome challenges; stay authentic, follow your beliefs and acknowledge your mistakes; and remain optimistic, see opportunities where others see obstacles.

Pentagram SEGD Golden Arrow Award

The SEGD Golden Arrow Award recognizes extraordinary service to the field of EGD. Recipients of the award have made large and long-term contributions to the strength of SEGD as leaders of their organizations, icons in the field, or supporters of SEGD’s goals. Pentagram is the seventh recipient of this award, established in 2004, joining Ann Makowski, Ralph Appelbaum, Leslie Gallery Dilworth, Moira Gemmill, Ed Matthews, and Deborah Sussman.

Pentagram, an esteemed international design consultancy, is dedicated to elevating the field of the experiential design practice. With offices worldwide, their commitment to SEGD has been unrivaled, fostering growth and excellence in our industry. As a voluntary supporter, thought leader and financial contributor, their multifaceted engagement has consistently upheld and progressed SEGD’s mission. Esteemed as the most influential design firm of the last fifty years, Pentagram’s enduring support of SEGD is a testament to their deep commitment to the experience design industry, positioning them as a deserving Golden Arrow recipient.

Prime Access Consulting SEGD Innovation Award

The SEGD Innovation Award recognizes members who have demonstrated innovative expertise and processes that have expanded the potential impact and engagement of experiential and environmental graphic design. Past recipients include Andrusko Group, SignAgent and 22 Miles.

Prime Access Consulting, Inc. (PAC) is an inclusive design firm operating in North America, South America, Europe, and Asia. PAC’s inclusive design methodology is applied to everything they do. Whether helping design an exhibition or an entire museum, achieve a fully WCAG conformant and accessible website, build a fully inclusive mixed-reality experience, or conduct any of their many accessibility and inclusive design trainings, PAC centers inclusivity at the heart of their practice. The output of this methodology is not only accessibility but rich products and experiences enjoyable by all people in an operationally scalable and sustainable manner. PAC’s team are subject matter experts whose unique skills, experience, intersectional identities, and efforts inform and enrich their practice. National Museum of African American History and Culture (Washington, D.C.)

SEGD Insight Award

The SEGD Insight Award recognizes visionary clients who demonstrate the impact of experiential design by commissioning projects and initiatives that significantly enhance or promote opportunities for the field and practitioners. Past recipients include: Bryan Stevenson, Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, NYCEDC, and The American Museum of Natural History.

The National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) stands as a groundbreaking achievement in interpretive and exhibition design. Its innovative approach, which emphasizes stories in African American history, has redefined cultural narration at the Smithsonian and across the National Mall. Garnering international acclaim, the museum has attracted over nine million on-site visitors and millions more online. This new model has powerfully echoed worldwide, amplifying African American heritage’s profound influence and resilience and reshaping our understanding of America’s cultural tapestry.

The SEGD Educator Award recognizes academic members who have demonstrated the cultivation and practice of design across practice areas of SEGD, namely, experiential and environmental graphic design, interaction design, exhibition design, creative technology, installation, and public good projects. Past recipients include Yeohyun Ahn, Angela Iarocci and Joell Angel-Chumbley.

Dr. Elizabeth (Dori) Tunstall is a design anthropologist, author of “ Decolonizing Design: A Cultural Justice Guidebook”, and an organizational design catalyst and executive coach. A recognized leader in the decolonization of art and design education, she received the 2022 Sir Misha Black Award for Distinguished Service to Design Education as well as the inaugural BADG of Honour for Design Education from the Black Artists and Designers Guild. With a global career, Dori served as the Dean of Design at Ontario College of Art and Design University in Canada, where she was the first Black female dean of a faculty of design anywhere. Te Wānanga Best of Show Award

Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland) is Aotearoa’s (New Zealand’s) largest city. As its bi-cultural community grows in confidence, the city is reconnecting with the ocean—the ocean on which Māori paddled their waka (canoes) across the Pacific over 800 years ago, followed by European settlers in the 19th century.

An audacious new public space has been designed in partnership with mana whenua (the people of the land) that hovers above the water, stitching together the city and the sea. Te Wānanga welcomes visitors from the water with respect, generosity and care, providing a place to pause, breathe and feel the breath, the hā, of Tangaroa (the god of the ocean).

Located at the nexus of Auckland’s varied public transport provisions, Te Wānanga is Auckland’s busiest and most significant stretch of waterfront. Until now, it has been a place of movement rather than habitation, constrained by traffic movements on land and water.

Te Wānanga is conceived as a tidal shelf for human and coastal ecologies—a space for people, flora and fauna to flourish. A co-design process was undertaken with ideas developed through concept to detailed design. Active and iterative collaboration allowed mana whenua values and Māori design to be brought into the project in an authentic, meaningful and purposeful way.

During the design process, the Kāhui Kaiarataki was established, a specialist group of Māori artists and environmental specialists, each endorsed to deliver component parts of the project through a co-design process. Including the raranga (weaving) Korimurimu (Tessa Harris, Ngāi Tai Ki Tāmaki) suspended within one of the open apertures; the whakairo (carving) Te Wairere (Reuben Kirkwood, Ngāi Tai Ki Tāmaki) and the traditional bindings (Tessa Harris) located along the outer balustrade; the coastal plantings (Richelle KahuiMcConnell, Mealofa Ltd), Charmaine Bailie (Te Uri o Hau—Ngāti Whātua ki Kaipara); and the waka kūtai (Jarrod Walker, Tātaki Ltd) suspended below the shelf surface providing habitat for kelps and kūtai (mussels).

Te Wānanga was constructed using wharf construction techniques during the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic period. It was opened to the public in July of 2021 with a moving dawn ceremony led by Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei.

Te Wānanga is a place to reflect, learn and reconnect with the sea. It achieves this through rich and authentic design that layers space, form and craft to generate a tactile, experiential and memorable space that honors the history of people and place.

Forest Net(work) Sylvia Harris Award

The Seattle Design Festival brings design to the people, encouraging thousands of visitors annually to participate in public dialogue and community engagement about the role and impact of design in urban life. For the 2022 prompt of ‘Connection,’ our team of volunteers focused on forging a deeper connection between visitors and the earth. Thirty-four volunteer architects, landscape designers, horticulturalists, experiential designers, and contractors partnered together for a 99% waste-free installation called Forest (Net)work.

Attendees of the Seattle Design Festival engaged with dozens of thought-provoking installations and interactive activities that utilized design thinking strategies to address challenges that face various communities throughout the region. Stand-out projects tend to draw extra awareness to their causes and compel visitors to continue thinking critically about issues after the festival ends. To create a memorable and meaningful experience, we centered our installation around a simple yet powerful idea that can better the world with little effort from attendees: planting trees and other plants native to our biome.

Because one of the main design drivers was to provide maximum visual impact with a minimal environmental footprint, it was essential that our team hit the mark on a temporary building structure, create an engaging visitor experience, and ensure smooth pedestrian navigation and traffic flow. Attendees of the Seattle Design Festival engage with dozens of thought-provoking installations and interactive activities that utilize design thinking strategies to address challenges that face various communities throughout the region.

Our team studied a variety of building forms. We used scaffolding to mimic the peaks of nearby mountains, paying attention to clearances needed for accessibility while creating an inviting experience that would feel open and airy yet also reminiscent of a forest path with a lush tree-shaded canopy overhead. Ropes tensioned over the scaffolding supported custom-designed biodegradable chipboard plant holders that lifted up the smaller plants, offering the calming dappled light of tree cover and a bit of shade on a summer weekend.

At the festival, guests were encouraged to choose a plant that was right for their available outdoor spaces and re-pot their plant into a biodegradable Fertilpot that could be planted directly into the earth. Volunteer staff provided information about growing conditions, reforestation initiatives, the importance of biodiversity and native species, and the sustainability components of the installation itself.
