WE LOVE MEETING NEW PEOPLE

Welcome to worship at Second-Ponce! We hope you find this hour to be joyful and transformative. Our church has something for everyone, and not just on Sundays. During the week, we have special dinners, small groups and Bible studies. Wednesday evenings, we share Fellowship Supper followed by adult discipleship and ageappropriate activities for children and teens. We hope you'll join us! And now that you know a little about us, help us get to know you better by completing the blue or green card located in the pew rack and hand it to a minister or drop it in the offering plate.

HOW TO JOIN

SCRIPTURE Psalm 89:1–4; 15–18 Rev. Allie Osborne

Leader: I will sing of Your steadfast love, O Lord, forever; with my mouth I will proclaim Your faithfulness to all generations.

People: I declare that Your steadfast love is established forever; Your faithfulness is as firm as the Heavens.

Leader: You said, “I have made a covenant with my chosen one, I have sworn to my servant David: ‘I will establish your descendants forever, and build your throne for all generations.’ ”

People: Happy are the people who know the festal shout, who walk, O Lord, in the light of Your countenance; they exult in Your name all day long, and extol Your righteousness.

Leader: For You are the glory of their strength; by Your favor our horn is exalted.

People: For our shield belongs to the Lord, our king to the Holy One of Israel.

ADDITIONAL SUNDAY INFORMATION

CHILDCARE DURING WORSHIP

We love to see children at Second-Ponce, and we have a Kids’ Club area just for them! It's one floor up from the Sanctuary, and our greeters will be happy to show you the way. In the Kids' Club, there’s a nursery and Kids Worship for babies–5th grade. You may take your children to the Kids' Club before the service or, if you prefer, they can stay with you in the Sanctuary for the entire hour or until the Doxology (when kids leave with children's ministry leaders). After worship, pick them up in the Kids’ Club.

SHARING A SPDL HISTORY MOMENT

John Roma and his family joined Second-Ponce in 1979 and at that time he was Baptized as a Christian believer. In 1990, he joined the Sanctuary Choir and since that time, he has remained a faithful member of our music ministry. As leader of our library services team (22 years and counting!), you'll find John most Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings working in our library. He has served as the SPdL Historian since 2014 and remains passionate about sharing the story of our church. John decorates our campus Christmas trees as well as the picture windows by the library, among other things. John is an award-winning gardener and collects books, hats, shoes and blue & white porcelain. He and his partner, church member and talented photographer, Dave Randolph, have been together for 12 years. Their favorite thing to do is travel and they have just returned from a trip to Spain, their 28th country.

SHARING PRAYER REQUESTS

At Second-Ponce, you have a church family who welcomes the opportunity to join you in prayer. Let us know your prayer needs by filling out a request card located on the back of the pew rack. You can drop it in the offering plate or give it to a member of the Second-Ponce ministerial staff after worship.

GIVING AN OFFERING

Your financial support of Second-Ponce allows us to carry out the mission God has for our church. There are giving cards in the pew racks that utilize a QR code for making gifts online. You may also drop your offering in the offering plate.

COMMUNITY COUNCIL UPDATE

Below is an excerpt from the Community Council Update blog post, the final installment in our series on the work of our lay leadership.

Do you feel welcomed—like you’re part of the family—when you’re at Second-Ponce? That’s because we value Community by prioritizing genuine relationships and caring for each other with Christ-like love. So, what is Second-Ponce doing to encourage a vibrant community of faith? Here are some examples:

• SPdL Rides—our newest ministry—pairs members who need a ride to a medical appointment with members who can give a ride. Can you be a driver?

• We work with intention and care to create special experiences—the Community Egg Hunt, Vacation Bible School, the Peachtree Road Race, Fall Fest, etc—that engage our neighbors in community.

• Every Monday, the Flower Team breaks down our beautiful Sanctuary flowers into smaller bouquets for delivery to our home-bound church members.

• Young Adult events, Parents Connect and a Women’s Fellowship group all are great times to get together with people who share your interests.

• The Prime Timers' ministry gives our senior adults opportunities to get together for fun and fellowship. Have you signed up for this year’s Peach Trip?

LET FREEDOM "RING"

To celebrate Independence Day, we're spotlighting our beautiful church bell that—for 163 years— has rung beautifully throughout our community. After worship, you're invited to stop by the Heritage Room to see even more keepsakes from our church's rich history.

A Magnificent Gift

The church bell was cast in Sheffield, England in 1860 and given to Second Baptist by church member James Clark. It originally cost $500 and weighs 764lbs.

A Permanent Home

On December 12, 1939, the church bell was moved from the old Second Baptist Church (across from the Georgia State Capitol building) and installed in the steeple of Second-Ponce de Leon Baptist Church.

A

Tribute to Chimes and Church

Before the bell was installed here, a dedication ceremony was held to honor the relocation. It was attended by Dr. Ryland Knight—the first pastor of Second-Ponce—and Mrs. John S. Spalding, who was both the granddaughter of Georgia Governor and Second Baptist member Joseph Emerson Brown and the daughter-in-law of former Second Baptist Church pastor Dr. A.T. Spalding.

A Cornerstone of the Community

For 163 years, our church bell has rung through our community. Here are just a few times where its chimes marked significant occasions:

• 1864 To warn Atlantans General Sherman and his troops were approaching

• 1939 To honor the premiere of Gone with the Wind (first ring since it was moved to our steeple)

• 1996 To commemorate the Olympic Games in Atlanta

• 2018 In memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on the 50th anniversary of his assassination

And the story continues ... Today, the bell continues to honor meaningful occasions like weddings, funerals and other events.

DISCIPLESHIP & MISSIONS

JULY 2023 PRAYER FOCUS: PRAYING THE PSALMS

The Psalms “teach us who we are. They uncover the state of our hearts …They show us what we need.” (Thomas M. Winger.) Beginning in chapter 1, we find guidance to meditate on God, “Blessed is the one …whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditate on (God’s) law day and night.” How, then, shall we pray? What are the words we use to talk to God? The Psalms offer us a prayerbook. We know no specific words are required to pray, but the Paslms contain holy words to guide our conversations with God. Learn more about our July prayer focus at www.spdl.org/prayer.

THERE'S STILL TIME TO BE A MIAMI MISSION TRIP SHAREHOLDER

Second-Ponce is sending a mission team to Miami July 8–15, and they need our support! There are ways you can serve alongside them before and during their trip. Learn more about the opportunities to help "prep, pay and pray" at www.spdl.org/missions.
