DOXOLOGY (HYMN NO. 706) Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow

Rev. John Uldrick

Leader: Almighty God, to Whom all hearts are open, all desires known and from Whom no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of Your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love You and worthily magnify Your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. People: Amen. Leader: Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another. (A moment of silence for reflection) Leader: Most merciful God, People: We confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against You in thought, word and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways, to the glory of Your Holy Name. Amen. Leader: God, who is rich in mercy, loved us even when we were dead in sin, and made us alive together with Christ. By grace you have been saved. In the name of Jesus Christ, your sins are forgiven. Almighty God strengthen you with power through the Holy Spirit, that Christ may live in your hearts through faith. People: Amen. HYMN INSERT ANTHEM

WE'RE "PEOPLE PEOPLE" FOR GUESTS WE HAVEN'T MET YET Welcome to church! Make yourself at home here! Settle in for a transformative and joyful hour of worship. We'd love to be helpful in your faith journey. There's a green card in the pew rack—I'm New Here. Use it to share as much information as you like and drop it in the offering plate. We understand that some people are hesitant to fill out church cards. It's true—a member of our pastoral staff will reach out, but you won't be flooded with calls, emails or requests. Engagement with us will be at your own pace; we just want to know who you are and how we can pray for you.

MORE GOOD STUFF

Children K–5 may leave during this time for Kids Worship. Parents, please pick up your children in room C-305 of the Children's Building after the service.

FOR GUESTS WE KNOW & CHURCH MEMBERS Welcome back to church! Your presence is part of what makes Sundays at Second-Ponce so wonderful. If you're a guest who's ready to take the next step or a church member who wants to deepen your involvement, fill out the red pew card—I'm a Regular—and drop it in the offering plate. Let us know how we can help.

You're rich in love and You're slow to anger Your name is great and Your heart is kind For all Your goodness, I will keep on singing Ten thousand reasons for my heart to find

SOLID ROCK

Our Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy Name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, On earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For Thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, forever. Amen. CONFESSION OF SIN & ASSURANCE OF PARDON

You are invited to meditate on the words of this beloved worship song.

God of our weary years, God of our silent tears, Thou who hast brought us thus far on the way, Thou Who hast by Thy might, led us into the light, Keep us forever in the path, we pray. Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met Thee; Lest our hearts, drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee; Shadowed beneath thy hand, may we forever stand, True to our God, true to our native land. WORSHIP OF GOD

Samuel Sebastian Wesley

LEADING OUR OFFERTORY PRAYER Lynn Klein, a member of Second-Ponce since 1986, teaches in the Bridge Builders Sunday School class. She has served in multiple ways throughout the years, including as an active ordained deacon and on the Executive Committee. She and her husband Tim have three adult children.

EVERYONE IS AN "INSIDER" AT SPDL We're sharing definitions of a few words and visuals you may encounter today. • Doxology: The Doxology is a short hymn of praise. We use it as transition music when children leave the Sanctuary for Kids Worship. • Invocation: The first prayer of the service invoking the spirit of God to be with us as we worship. • Lent/Lenten Season: A period of 40 days beginning on Ash Wednesday and ending on the Saturday before Easter. Sundays are not counted because Sunday always celebrates Jesus’ victory over sin and death. • Lord's Supper: Also known as Communion, the Lord's Supper reminds us of Jesus' ultimate act of love—dying for our sins. The crackers and juice symbolize the sacrifice of His body and blood. The Lord's Supper is not a one-time rite, but rather a regular practice in our church. • SPdL: An abbreviation for Second-Ponce de Leon. We pronounce it "Spee-duhl." • Vacation Bible School: Vacation Bible School, or VBS, is a fun-filled week for kids with music, games, crafts, Bible stories, snacks and more! Held in the summer during typical "vacation" months, VBS is one of the happiest weeks of the year! CHILDCARE DURING WORSHIP We love to see children at Second-Ponce, and we have a Kids’ Club area just for them! It's one floor up from the Sanctuary, and our greeters will be happy to show you the way. In the Kids' Club, there’s a nursery and Kids Worship for babies–5th grade. You may take your children to the Kids' Club before the service or, if you prefer, they can stay with you in the Sanctuary for the entire hour or until the Doxology (when kids leave with children's ministry leaders). After worship, pick them up in the Kids’ Club. HOW TO JOIN Second-Ponce enthusiastically welcomes you to make a commitment to Christ and our community of faith. At any time during the Hymn of Response, simply walk to the front of the Sanctuary where a member of our ministry team will greet you with warmth and joy. If you're uncomfortable being "in the spotlight," but still want to join–that's ok! Speak with one of our ministers after worship and they'll walk you through an alternate plan.

LENTEN WORSHIP Dr. Dock Hollingsworth talks about his Sunday sermon series on Judges: As many of you know, most Sundays I preach from one of the day’s selections from the New Common Lectionary. The lectionary is a 3-year schedule of readings that includes an Old Testament passage, a Psalm, a Gospel reading, and another New Testament selection. The beauty of lectionary preaching is that it keeps the preacher from preaching his/her favorite passages over and over while avoiding difficult texts. Lectionary preaching assures a balanced diet of the biblical witness. But there is a limitation to lectionary preaching, which is that there is no occasion to preach through a book of the Bible with an appreciation for the warp and woof of the book’s story. (As you know, I love stories.) The other limitation is that some books get little coverage in the lectionary. For instance, Judges 4:1-7 is the only passage from the Book of Judges that makes the cut. So, if I only preached the lectionary passages, once every three years, one passage from Judges would come up for consideration, which might just leave us rather ignorant on Judges. So once a year, I depart from the lectionary, choose a book, and preach through one book for several weeks. This year, yep … I have chosen Judges. Judges is full of wonderful stories of bad choices and trickery and redemption, and I am going to preach these passages during the season of Lent. Since Lent is the season of the church year where we focus on our sinfulness and need for a Savior, maybe we will learn something together from these little-known stories of our ancestors. Maybe we will be inspired by their bad choices and make some better ones.
