People: You know when I sit down and when I rise up; You discern my thoughts from far away.

Leader: Returning Deacons and new candidates, the church has recognized in you the gifts of service and leadership. Having been elected by this congregation to this term of Deacon leadership, do you commit yourself to faithful service in the name of Christ and as a representative of Second-Ponce de Leon Baptist Church?

Leader: You search out my path and my lying down, and are acquainted with all my ways.

Deacons: I do.

People: Even before a word is on my tongue, O Lord, You know it completely. Leader: You hem me in, behind and before, and lay Your hand upon me.

Leader: Members of this congregation, do you commit your support to these individuals whom you have set aside for Deacon service? Do you further pledge your prayers, gifts and participation in service to the Kingdom of God?

People: Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is so high that I cannot attain it.

Congregation: We do.

Leader: For it was You who formed my inward parts; You knit me together in my mother's womb.

Leader: May the God Who calls and holds us bless the service of these Deacons and this congregation as we bear witness to Christ’s love.

People: I praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are Your works; that I know very well.

OFFERTORY PRAYER

Leader: O Lord, You have searched me and known me.

Leader: My frame was not hidden from You, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. People: Your eyes beheld my unformed substance. In Your book were written all the days that were formed for me, when none of them as yet existed. Leader: How weighty to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them! People: I try to count them—they are more than the sand; I come to the end—I am still with You. ANTHEM

SHARING THE OFFERTORY PRAYER Edie Whitaker served as SPdL's Minister to Children for over 20 years. Her calling to share God's love with little ones has continued through her service as a leader in children's choirs and Vacation Bible School. Edie—active in our music and congregational care ministries—was recently named a Life Deacon. She and her husband, Reid, are parents to two adult children, Lang and Claire, and grandparents to five.

WE'RE "PEOPLE PEOPLE" FOR GUESTS WE HAVEN'T MET YET Welcome to church! Make yourself at home here! Settle in for a transformative and joyful hour of worship. We'd love to be helpful in your faith journey. There's a green card in the pew rack—I'm New Here. Use it to share as much information as you like and drop it in the offering plate. We understand that some people are hesitant to fill out church cards. It's true—a member of our pastoral staff will reach out, but you won't be flooded with calls, emails or requests. Engagement with us will be at your own pace; we just want to know who you are and how we can pray for you. FOR GUESTS WE KNOW & CHURCH MEMBERS Welcome back to church! Your presence is part of what makes Sundays at Second-Ponce so wonderful. If you're a guest who's ready to take the next step or a church member who wants to deepen your involvement, fill out the red pew card—I'm a Regular—and drop it in the offering plate. Let us know how we can help.

MEDIAN ADULT DREAMING EVENT Saturday, January 20 | 5:30–8 p.m. | Location: Punch Bowl Social | Cost: Your Own Meal | Childcare Available Upon Request This year, Second-Ponce is launching a ministry effort for members and families between the already established Young Adult and Senior Adult groups. While it is a wide age range—with different life stages—there is immeasurable value in learning, sharing and forming community as a group. So, join us for a Median Adult Dreaming Event. We’ll gather at Punch Bowl Social near Truist Park for some food and fun and to talk about how we might connect as a group this year. Because this is an adult space, we’re asking that you not bring children. Allie and Jonathan are available to hang out with your kids at the church while we have fun, but you must reserve that with them, specifically. Email Allie or Jonathan if you want to take them up on their offer! This is going to be a great night and we hope to see you there! RSVP by Wednesday, 1/17. CHURCH IN CONFERENCE Sunday, January 21 | After Worship | Fellowship Hall | Lunch Cost: $8 Join us for the first Church in Conference of 2024! We'll enjoy a yummy lunch of tomato soup, turkey sandwiches, chips and cookies, and then discuss important church business like 2023 year-end expenses, Ministry Council reports, updates from Planned Gifts and the Finance Committee, membership and more. RSVP by Thursday, January 18. SPECIAL SUNDAY We're excited to share a couple of special opportunities happening Sunday, February 4. • Children and youth will have a combined Sunday School hour to prepare ashes for Ash Wednesday. • It's a pulpit swap! In worship, we'll welcome Rev. Caroline Smith, senior pastor of Parkway Baptist Church in Duluth, to share a sermon with us while our own Rev. Allie Osborne shares her message with the congregation at Parkway. This creative worship experience allows us, as a church family, to affirm God's call for women to preach the gospel. ASH WEDNESDAY SERVICE Wednesday, February 14 | Following Fellowship Supper (6:15 p.m.) | Chapel Join us as we begin the Lenten season with Ash Wednesday worship on February 14. After Fellowship Supper, we'll move to the Chapel and share in a deeply meaningful time together. Children and youth will participate in worship, but childcare will be available.
