THE JEWISH 411 INTRODUCTION

WELCOME! The Jewish 411, Southern California’s annual Jewish business directory, is your source for information about everything from kosher bakeries to synagogues and day schools. Covering Orange County, San Diego County, Palm Springs and surrounding desert areas, you’ll find color-coded sections to help you navigate to your region of choice. Within each section, there are editorial spotlights on different organizations from each region to highlight Jewish camps, senior services, and events. Also included is a list of performance art venues in each region, and an advertiser’s index at the back of the book to help you flip quickly to the business of your choice. For stories and information about Jewish events, organizations and people all year round, subscribe to the San Diego Jewish Journal at sdjewishjournal.com, or Orange County JLife at ocjlife.com. We hope this booklet provides useful information throughout the year, and we look forward to hearing from you with questions, comments, and story ideas. L’Shalom,

Mark Edelstein, publisher Dr. Mark Moss, publisher Natalie Jacobs, editor-in-chief Derek Berghaus, creative director Ronnie Weisberg, office manager

t Jewish day camps, Judaism is infused in every activity. Everything from painting and canoeing to running and playing can be Jewish. Children realize through camp that living their life and living Judaism can be one and the same. “It’s simple: Jewish day camps create Jewish friends,” Dan Bernstein, the Merage JCC President and CEO says. “At a time when fewer Jews maintain strong ties to the Jewish community, Jewish camp builds a strong foundation

Kavod is a constant principle taught to campers throughout their day. As well as respecting others, they learn to clean their area after each session and after lunch. Each camper also engages in tikkun olam by doing service projects to learn about people less fortunate than themselves and the joy of helping others. “Why is Jewish Camp different from all others? Culture, values, traditions are equally balanced with fun, friends, learning and exercise,” Audra Martin, Director of Children and Camp at the Merage JCC says. “Jewish camps fill a fundamental need in our community: providing a positive Jewish environment and serving as a launch pad for engagement in Jewish life.” Connecting kids to Israel is an integral part of camp. Israeli shlichim, or messengers, join the camp every year to

teach kids about life in Israel and adding Israeli culture to camp including Hebrew, Israeli arts, music, food and dance. Campers also learn leadership skills, which will help them throughout their life. “Israeli Days are common with the sights and sounds of our homeland,” Martin explains. “Jewish camps takes the opportunity to share what Shabbat and life looks like in Israeli homes.” A Learn more about Merage JCC’s Jewish day camp programs at jccoc.org.

Orange County SPOTLIGHT ON... Jr. Maccabi Games Jcc Merage To Host This Year’s Competition

T

he Maccabi Games is about more than competition – it’s a global event that fosters pride, unity and encouragement. The two-week experience emulates Olympic-style competition often including real Olympic athletes like gymnast Mitch Gaylord, and swimmers Mark Spitz and Jason Lezek. The Jr. Maccabi Games, modeled after their adult Israeli counterpart Maccabiah Games, are the second largest organized 40 THE JEWISH 411

sports program for Jewish teenagers in the world. The Maccabiah movement began in 1895 when the first all-Jewish sports club was formed in Constantinople. In 1932, the first world Maccabiah games were held in Israel. “The opportunity to connect so many teens to the Jewish community and Israel is epic,” says Sam Cohen, Program Director at Merage JCC of Orange County. “The teens come home brimming

Also an art festival, creative teens can show off their skills in acting, cooking, dance, music, art and a

variety of other disciplines. In addition to competitive medals, team OC competes for midot medals. The gold midot medals are awarded to teens who exemplify Jewish values throughout the course of their time together. “As a former athlete and now coach at the Maccabi Games, I know firsthand the feeling of pride representing our community at the Games,” Catie Chase, a girls soccer coach, involved in the Games for more than 15 years, says. Attracting teams from all over the country the games take place in a different city every four years. The Merage JCC will host the 2016 Jr. Maccabi Games on June 5. “My hope is that even though nothing can bring your pet back,” she told the website desertpetcompanion.com, “I can help you get back your heart.”

P

ets have played a remarkable role in the life of Rabbi Sally Olins, who moved on from Temple Isaiah in Palm Springs this year. As an accomplished dancer in her prerabbinical days, Olins has always been on the move. Entering a new chapter of her life, she has definitely made a statement by establishing Pets at Rest to provide personalized non-denominational memorial services and counseling at “your home or pet cemetery.” It was a bold move, but not entirely unexpected from the well-liked rabbi. As the Desert Sun reported in a front page article about Rabbi Olins, “Normally when you lose an animal you don’t get any closure. There’s no funeral, there’s generally not a burial.” But Palm Springs is an exceptionally involved community when it comes to pet rescue and adoptions, with the Palm Springs Animal Shelter, Loving all Animals, and the Humane Society are just a few of the nonprofit organizations promoting the care and engagement of the pet community. Rabbi Olins has simply added a new dimension to the commuity. “My hope is that even though nothing can bring your pet back,” she told the website desertpetcompanion.com, “I can help you get back your heart.” Olins’ rabbinical perspective is widely respected throughout the

44 THE JEWISH 411

desert communities, due in part to her background. She has a Masters Degree in Jewish Philosophy and was ordained a Conservative rabbi in 1989. She became the spiritual leader at Temple Isaiah in Palm Springs in 2006. She rescued her dog Barney, a Bichon Frise, at the Coachella Valley animal shelter that same year she started with Temple Isaiah. He remains her constant companion “The word dog is g-d spelled backwards,” she says. And that was no accident, she continues. “I do not know any other creature that has such unconditional love. During our conversation, Rabbi Olins also mentioned Zach, a golden retriever who understood Hebrew, loved Shabbat and had an addiction to challah bread. When he passed, his owners contacted Olins to provide a memorial service for the beloved pet. She also counseled his owners through their grief. “This was in 2011 before I retired,” she says. “During that time, other congregation members spoke to me about their pet loss and grief.” So with the extra time she found in retirement, she created Pets at Rest, to provide a similar service beyond her congregation. onald Wexler has his name all over Palm Springs. Well maybe not his name, exactly, but definitely his design signature. From the masterful design of the Palm Springs Spa Bath House (sadly demolished in 2014) to the Dinah Shore Residence in Old Las Palmas (now owned by actor Leonardo DeCaprio).

Wexler’s architectural legacy reverberates throughout the desert. 48 THE JEWISH 41 411

“His style is to Palm Springs what the Acropolis is to Athens,” says Timmy Shulman Woods, niece of Julius Shulman, the photographer who captured the spirit and essence of Wexler’s architectural designs throughout Palm Springs during the last half of the 20th century. Palm Springs today is a living showcase of Donald Wexler’s vision, fusing interiors with exteriors for his commercial and residential structures.

PALM SPRINGS

“I feel he brought stunning desert views into interiors, creating drama throughout,” Woods says. “And this is what [my uncle] Julius Shulman captures in his photographs.” After Wexler, a fellow of the American Institute of Architects (FAIA), passed on June 26, 2015, a memorial service was held at Temple Isaiah in Palm Springs. Wexler’s journey from his birth in 1926 in South Dakota was revealed through words from his friends, family and business associates. His professional development took off with an “auspicious apprenticeship” alongside Austria-born Richard Joseph Neutra, in 1950. This accelerated his architectural trajectory, one that found a home in Palm Springs and eventually found revere in Modernism Week (this year held from Feb.11-21, 2016). Wexler is heralded as a “modern magnet” attracting mid-century fans from around the world. Wexler helped move Palm Springs into the limelight, a result of his masterful architectural vision. This can be seen at the Architecture + Design Center located at 300 South Palm Canyon Drive where Wexler’s star was dedicated on Feb. 15, 2008. The architectural style ignited by Modern design has deep roots in the desert, too. Wexler’s legacy is detailed in “Donald Wexler: Architect,” a 56-page book that chronicles his contributions to this desert community and reveals the range of his innovative concepts. Wexler’s name is associated with residential and commercial buildings such as the Palm Springs International Airport (1965), now listed as a Palm Springs Class I Historic Site. He aptly described his

THE JEWISH 411

perception of desert architecture in this way: “We didn’t think of it in terms of architecture for the desert. It was a matter of designing … to live with the environment, a matter of balancing orientation and views.” This desert sensibility of Wexler’s inimitable designs can also be seen at the Riverside County Superior Courthouse, Larson Justice Center in Indio and the Palm Springs Police Department and jail facility. From his debut as a designer of affordable housing to custom residences, such as the Leff Residence (1957) in the Old Las Palmas neighborhood of Palm Springs, a Modernism Week tour guide will put it all together with perfect sense at this year’s festivities. Fast forward to the opening of the Palm Springs Art Museum and Design Center, Edwards Harris Pavilion (aka the A+D Center), a 13,000 square foot glass and steel building at 300 South Palm Canyon Drive, across the street from what is now the Eisenhower Medical Center (414 South Palm Canyon). The Wexler-designed building was originally opened in 1971 as Merrill Lynch Fenner & Smith (also once a Class I Historic Site). Merrill Lynch moved out, replacing financial fitness with health and wellness. The “temple” style building has been transformed with the renovation, based partly on Julius Shulman’s photographs. The collaboration between Donald Wexler and Julius Shulman makes a visit to South Palm Canyon Drive a mandatory tour in your Modernism journey. SPOTLIGHT ON... Eisenhower Health Center Healthy, Weathly and Wise

Art adorns waiting rooms at Eisenhower Medical Center in Palm Springs to provide a comfortable atmosphere.

T

he impact of mid-century Modernism is omnipresent throughout Palm Springs and can often be found in unexpected places. Take, for example, Eisenhower Health Center – at 415 South Palm Canyon. The Modernism-inspired building was designed by iconic Palm Springs architect Donald Wexler (more on him specifically on pg. 52 of this directory). The Eisenhower

54 THE JEWISH 411

was built in 1971 originally to house Merrill Lynch, Pierce, Fenner and Smith. When the investment firm relocated, the 13,000 sq. ft., bi-level building was rescued from demolition by local preservationists. In Feb., 2015, the building debuted as the Eisenhower Health Center. The shift from financial institution to medical center has been seemless. The dedicated medical staff at Eisenhower focus on health and wellness,

“The goal was to move away from a threatening institutional ambiance by creating a peaceful, relaxing setting, through light, color and aesthetics. with specialties in pain management, cardiology, endocrinology, and neurology. To help ease the transition, the Eisenhower team has hung art throughout its quarters. “Repurposed,” says Jeff Weyant, of Jeff Weyant Designs, “the interior now provides a healing environment for patients from the moment they arrive.” This is symbolized by the designer’s selection of Modernist-inspired art and it comes together the moment you enter. Patients are met with a work of inspired orignal mosaic created by Evelyn Ackerman, the Los Angeles-based artist and designer. Evelyn, along with her husband Jerome, now 97 years old, played a central role in the “distinctive aesthetic of Claifornia midcentury Modernism. Evelyn’s legendary “Morning Dove” series, with the five-star Eisenhower Medical Center logo place toward the right of the display, is captivating. “What a remarkable way to welcome patients,” says local author Grace Robbins. “The composition has a way of making you forget your aches and pains.” Photography also plays a crucial role

in the Eisenhower’s tribute to Modernism, including one piece from the Frank Sinatra estate. The lingering “institutional ambiance” of other medical facilities is mostly forgotten here. Jill Rice, Eisenhower Medical Center’s media coordinator and community specialist confirmed that was the intention of the Modernism “make-over.” By the time you reach the second floor of the building, you can see swaying palm trees profiled against the mountains. It is clear from this view why so many artists have taken such inspiration from the famous desert sky. The view is intended also to calm the nerves of patients. “The goal was to move away from a threatening institutional ambiance by creating a peaceful, relaxing setting, through light, color and aesthetics. This is a positive influence on blood pressure and heart rate,” Rice says. Transforming a 1971 financial building into a desert oasis of healing was a project undertaken by Eisenhower Medical Center to reinforce their goal of providing “health care as it should be.” Palm Springs journalist Stuart Weiner has called it a “healthy restoration.” It’s a powerful prescription. SanDiego SPOTLIGHT ON... Teen Work Jewish education in San Diego just got a $3 million boost BY TINA B. ESHEL

I

n September of last year, the Jewish Federation announced it was the recipient of a $3 million matching grant from the national Jim Joseph Foundation, a California-based private foundation which works to support Jewish education across the country. The grant will be distributed across five years and San Diego’s Federation is required to raise an equal amount from local funders, says Heather Wolfson, senior director of community partnership at Federation. Wolfson spoke by phone, explaining that the money will be used to launch the community-based Center for Jewish Service Learning, a new initiative to get teens excited about Jewish communal service and education. The grant will also be used to create a hub for local programming, called the Jewish Teens Service Institute and Corp (JTSIC),

60 THE JEWISH 411

housed at the JCC. The idea is that volunteering is a way to keep teens connected to Judaism during those post-Bar and Bat Mitzvah years when structured opportunities within Jewish life traditionally wane for kids. “We want to seed innovation around Jewish service-learning through funding [to] existing organizations, and we want to support teens in creating their own programs that will done through micro grants,” Wolfson says. Daren Schwartz was recently hired to lead JTSIC at the JCC, working in close collaboration with Federation and Jim Joseph Foundation. He explains that the Jewish Federation and the JCC are sharing the lead in shaping the objections and vision of the JTSIC to “serve and amplify the entire Jewish community.”

Teens from the 2014 JServe teen volunteer day.

A key challenge is helping people understand what service learning is, Schwartz points out. By his definition, service learning is “adding intentionality to what is typically considered community service. “So the example I like to give,” he continues, “is the difference between a beach cleanup versus a group of people meeting at the beach, talking about the environment, contributing factors to what added to the trash on the beach, what Jewish values have to say about being stewards of the land, then doing the beach clean up and then followed by a debriefing exercise.”

Learning constitutes the conversations that happen in and around the action of service. In his new role, Schwartz will design the programs that incorporate both. The program is so new that even the website is still in development, but the Jewish Journal will keep you informed as programming solidifies and grant recipients are determined. A A longer version of this story first appeared in the January, 2016 issue of the San Diego Jewish Journal. Check sdjewishjournal.com for updates on this budding education initiative. 2016

SPOTLIGHT ON... Seacrest @ Home

The young home-care agency is already makings waves in the industry, while placing emphasis on its employees

T

he two-and-a-half-year-old home care agency Seacrest @ Home was voted into the “Top 5 Home Care Agencies” in this year’s Union-Tribune reader’s poll. That’s out of about 300 home care providers in the city and county, notes Director of Home Care and RN Kelli Denton. One reason the young agency might already be so respected in the community is their commitment to their workforce. Most of the 75 caregivers currently on their roster are per-diem employees, but, in accordance with new labor laws, they all qualify for sick-time benefits. For every 30 houtrs worked, caregivers acrue one hour of sick time, Denton explains. Caregivers are also paid for overtime and double time as shifts require. With their success, Seacrest @ Home is growing at break-neck pace. “We’re constantly in hiring mode,” Denton says. To ensure that all caregivers are properly trained, Denton recently instituted a mentorship program that pairs veteran caregivers with new hires. The veteran receives a bonus for his/her involvement in the program. On the client side, Seacrest @ Home offers scholarships based on need. Kelli Denton can walk you through the specific qualification requirements for that. Contact her at kdenton@ seacrestathome.org, (760) 942-2695 or (760) 632-3715. A

SAN DIEGO

SanDiego SPOTLIGHT ON... Seacrest Village Volunteer Program Offers Seacrest Residents A Chance To Spend Quality Time With Kids BY NATALIE JACOBS

A

t Seacrest Village, there is a unique opportunity for both residents and the broader San Diego community to volunteer in a variety of ways. The volunteer program started eight years ago and has focused on recruiting and retaining outside volunteers who offer a variety of time, talent and treasure to the North County residents. With her relatively new position as volunteer liaison for Seacrest Village, Sheryl Seltser is working to increase the number of volunteers who help out at Seacrest but she’s also creating new opportunities for residents to volunteer based on their own expertise and areas of interest. Seltser started on that mission by asking the residents what they’re looking for in volunteer activities and the response gave her a clear course. “Reading with children,” Seltser says. “That was one thing that the residents really were looking for.” In mid-August of last year, five Seacrest residents spent a morning at Temple Solel where they read to Camp Solel kids aged 3 to 5. After story time, the Seacrest volunteers, all women, ate lunch with the campers and then the group sang Shabbat songs with Solel’s cantor. “It was a fantastic experience for us,” Claire Winer says. “The kids were positively 86 THE JEWISH 411

wonderful, with their big eyes. They’re looking at you and wondering about you and asking questions about you. And they were very receptive to anything we said or did.” Winer has been living at Seacrest for two years. She started the knitting club almost as soon as she arrived, and she serves as a greeter to give tours and make new residents feel welcome. But she was looking for more ways to get involved. “When I first came here, I wanted to go across the street [to the Ecke Family YMCA] and read to the kids,” she remembers. “I wanted to get involved outside of here, I felt it would be good for me. But it never came to pass.” She mentioned the idea to other Seacrest employees and when Sheryl Seltser was looking for volunteer program options, the idea made its way to her. “We definitely need to incorporate more [volunteer opportunities for residents] because there are only so many residents you can bring to one outing,” Seltser says. There was a waitlist for the Camp Solel reading program. With the new school year underway, Seltser has begun to work on more reading events at Temple Solel and hopes to expand to other locations in the Encinitas area. Joan Frosh, another of the five volunteer

readers, is a retired teacher. “I don’t miss teaching, I’m glad to be retired,” she says with a laugh, “but I miss the children.” Barbara Diamond came to the program with a background in tutoring and reading (the topic of her dissertation) and a professional history as a therapist. She has been living at Seacrest for a year, after spending five years taking care of her ailing husband. “When I came here, I saw all these grandmas and grandpas who have no little children on their laps to read to,” she says. “Some of them are blessed with families and they can do it that way, but for those of us that don’t have young ones, I thought it would be a great idea for both the recipient and the giver to gain from having a child on your lap and looking up at you like ‘tell me more grandma!’ [I thought] that it would be a rewarding experience and it was.” The whole program lasted an hour, and for Diamond, it opened the door to all kinds of possibilities for more “follow up” as she called it. Things like drawing pictures or acting out scenes instead of finishing the book and hurrying off to lunch. But for now she’ll settle for the program to happen on a regular basis. “When you have children looking forward to you, it’s such a thrill,” Diamond says. “I loved the idea that the kids were very anxious and interested and couldn’t wait for the rest of the story. That was very exciting to me to feel needed and wanted in a specific way again.” Bertha Fox, the fourth volunteer I was able to interview and newest resident of the group, also came to the program with a wealth of experience. She spent nine years as a tutor for dyslexic adults. “That was one of the highlights of my life,”

THE JEWISH 411

Fox says, “because it made such a difference to them. I was amazed at how many adults grew up who could not read.” For Fox, this program was gratifying in a different way and she enjoyed the opportunity to interact with “very precocious” kids. “These moments of being together and sharing are truly invaluable,” Seltser says. “It is our vision at Seacrest Village to create more of these intergenerational programs for our residents.” While she works to expand the resident volunteer programs, Seltser is also always recruiting community members to volunteer at Seacrest Village. “We have volunteers who come from the community [from] all age groups. They can be retirees, college students, Bar or Bat Mizvah students. We’ve had groups of Girlscouts, Hillel, teen volunteer groups. We’ve had groups from the Helen Woodward Center who come in and do some pet therapy visits.” If you have a talent you wish to share with the Seacrest community, contact Sheryl Seltser at sseltser@seacrestvillage.org. our years ago, Ed Carnot and Louis Vener noticed a for sale sign at 8788 Balboa Avenue. Both are long-time board members of Jewish Family Service, which has occupied the building next door, at 8804 Balboa, for nine years. At the time when Carnot and Vener saw the sign, Jill Spitzer, the social service nonprofit’s 26-year CEO, had just announced her retirement. And the economy was just starting to crawl out of recession. Determined to seize an unlikely opportunity, Carnot and Venner wanted 90 THE JEWISH 411

JFS to buy the building at 8788 Balboa despite what looked like terrible timing. Within a year, the Board had decided to move forward with the plan, and went on to raise $11 million to purchase the building at 8788 Balboa. The official community ribbon cutting was held Jan. 31. JFS is calling their new expanded quarters a campus – The Joan and Irwin Jacobs Campus. Administrative functions will remain at 8804 Balboa (named the Turk Family Center) and client services

Everything in the new spaces is intentional, with the hope of shifting the way that JFS does business. By having case managers sit near counselors, clients who come to JFS for help with an urgent life event may be more quickly introduced to someone who can offer ongoing support from the 50 or so programs the organization offers.
