It’s no surprise that millions of people flock to southern California to enjoy the amazing year-round weather and the exciting attractions. We live in a place where the need for a jacket is a rarity, where the sight of rain is cause for celebration and where being outdoors for both work and play is the norm. Costa Mesa, your home, fits the mold when it comes to this lifestyle.

City Parks: The City offers 29 distinct park spaces that welcome residents to enjoy relaxing greenspaces, play structures, gazebos, athletic fields, special event areas, workout stations and natural preservation areas. Fairview Park, the City’s gem, is home to several ongoing nature programs, a model aircraft/drone fly field, a trails system and many long-standing community events. Youth and Adult Sports: The City is proud to offer programs in youth basketball, cheerleading, a youth running club program, as well as a year-round youth fitness program. Adults can enjoy City programs that include basketball, softball and futsal. In an effort to maximize outdoor recreational experiences, the City of Costa Mesa continually works to provide space for and promote nearly 20 youth and adult sports organizations that call Costa Mesa home! There is really something for everyone with the vast offering of all City and local sports organization offerings! Both the Jack Hammett Sports Complex and the TeWinkle Athletic Complex are state-of-the-art, well-known and respected facilities that see play nearly year-round for both youth and adults. Bark Park and Skate Park: Dog lovers and adventure sports enthusiasts can find themselves right at home at TeWinkle Park; home to the City’s Bark Park and Skate Park. Both of these specialty facilities are popular amongst their respective users and draw crowds from all over Orange County due to their size, design and well-maintained conditions. Both facilities are also home to unique community events! Community Gardens: Costa Mesa is proud to offer two Community Gardens that offer more than 100 parcel spaces to residents. The Del Mar and Hamilton Gardens allow for residents to utilize provided, private space to cultivate and grow fruits and vegetables as well as friendships. This always-popular, outdoor program has a rich tradition that allows for pop-up greenspace opportunities for those that may not have their own yard or a traditional means to garden. Tennis and Golf: The Costa Mesa Tennis Center, located in TeWinkle Park, offers 12 lighted, public tennis courts, a pro-shop and an array of classes and league programs for youth, adults and seniors. The Costa Mesa Country Club features two 18-hole championship courses, a lighted driving range, PGA classes and private instruction as well as a coffee shop and lounge and several banquet facilities. Hiking and Biking Trails: Costa Mesa has more than 100 miles of trails that allow for many forms of outdoor exercise, including walking, biking, hiking and running. The newly completed Harbor Cornerstone Trail now flows into the Joanne Bike trail, creating a beautiful and safe transportation corridor for walkers, bikers and runners. Aquatics: The Downtown Aquatic Center, which recently received upgrades to all mechanical equipment and pool decking, is home to the City’s pool area. All ages of participants can enjoy an array of instructional classes, open swim opportunities, special events and safety trainings at this facility. With all of these amazing facilities and programs, I challenge you to break out of your four walls and get outside and play. Whether you are taking a stroll through one of our many parks, participating in an organized sports league or socializing with your dog, the memories you will make will be priceless! Justin Martin, Recreation Manager

“The Parks and Community Services Department is committed to enhancing the community through the delivery of innovative recreational programs, quality parks and facilities and services that promote social, physical and emotional well-being. “ DIDN’T GET YOUR BROCHURE IN THE MAIL? Here are some reasons why you should adopt your next pet.

Requirements

TO SAVE A LIFE! Not just one, but two lives. When you adopt you save the life of the pet you take home and help make room for another one to be cared for. IT’S A GREAT DEAL! Most adoption fees already include the costs of microchipping, spaying/neutering and up-to-date vaccines. VARIETY! Animal shelters have a wide variety of pets to choose from, more than 25 percent of which are purebred. If you have a particular breed in mind, check both your local shelter and breed specific rescue groups. SUPPORT ADOPTION! Adopting stops the exploitation of animals. If you do decide to purchase a pet, make sure you find a reputable breeder. The breeder should allow you to meet both parents of your soon to be pet, and be able to provide you with the animal's complete health history. IT’S GOOD FOR THE ENVIRONMENT! Adopting helps combat overpopulation. Over 80 percent of animals in shelters are there because of owner neglect. Adopting is ecofriendly and recycled pets are the best kind!

Costa Mesa | 7 a.m. – Sunset

An Orange County park open year round, the Talbert Nature Preserve has nearly 2,000 acres of scenic landscape, perfect for Costa Mesa locals and visitors that want to get outside. A great spot for hiking, biking, jogging or even just walking the dog (yes, the preserve is dog friendly!), the preserve acts as a botanical garden, wildlife refuge and exceptional recreational facility all at once. Picnic tables at the end of the base of a trail from Fairview Park is where you’ll likely find Costa Mesa locals spending time on the weekends. Talbert Nature Preserve is located on Victoria Street in Costa Mesa between Pacific Avenue and the Santa Ana River. The Talbert Nature Preserve is divided into two sections; the North Talbert Preserve is roughly 91.5 acres and the South Talbert Preserve is approximately 88.5 acres.

 It’s amazingly well-maintained in a peaceful setting across from the Costa Mesa Tennis Center

 Motor skills challenges set this park apart from others – there are pedestals to navigate, balance beams, platforms, standing pedal pushers, and tunnels

With nine different trails stretching over nearly 3 miles (6 miles round trip); the Talbert Nature Preserve is one of few open space areas left in Central Orange County. With only 100 feet in elevation, the Talbert’s trails are great for beginner hikers or families with younger children. Hikers can continue through the Nature Center to reach the Santa Ana River Bicycle Trail, which continues on to the Pacific Ocean and nearby Newport Beach. Wildlife in the preserve consists mostly of birds, including great, snowy egrets and mallard ducks. You might also see small animals like squirrels and rabbits – and beware of coyote visits at night.
