ichele Nissen, Eastvale’s City Manager, introduced our new Code Enforcement Officer Vanessa Lopez. Officer Lopez comes to Eastvale from the City of Carson where she worked as a Code Enforcement Officer. She started the Explorer academy at age 13 and quickly moved up to Gardena Police Assistant. In 2008, she was hired full time with the City of Carson. Her responsibilities in Eastvale will be field inspections of zoning and safety issues and to educate the public. The program is compliance driven. For instance: if you are given a notice to comply for having your trash cans out front, you need to place the trash cans behind your side wall to avoid a citation.

If the sign located in your neighborhood states “no parking between the hours of 8am-2pm” you can be ticketed any time between those hours regardless of when the street sweeper came by. T

he STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Academy is still in the planning stages and the District is planning for a 2018/2019 full opening. It will be a 2 story building in the front and a 3 story building in the back. It will have its own entry and courtyard. There will also be a built-in buffer for the neighbors to the west. It will be located where the junior varsity softball field is currently located. 9th grade students will able to start the STEM program in the 2016/2017 school year. Planning for this program and the new building started in February 2015 with the formation of a STEM Advisory Committee. They met every month and researched existing facilities and programs. They also looked at the impact to the existing school site, traffic and neighborhoods. This is a paid advertisement

• JCSD Update:

R

ic Welch let residents know that the drought mandate was extended until the end of the year. Our reduction rates were reduced from 28% to 23% so we are likely to hit our goal. The board has recently voted to raise the residency rate for “User Group 1” organizations from 65% to 90% to reduce traffic at our parks. Those residents East of Hamner are within the city’s limits but not within the parks territory. Those residents would be considered non-residents for programs registration purposes within the JCSD.

R

afael Gonzalez said that Phase 2 of Eastvale Community Park is in the plan check phase and preparing for construction which is scheduled to begin this summer. Phase 2 will include a softball complex, playground, additional soccer fields, parking and additional exit.

CNUSD News • Every 15 Minutes On April 5th and 6th, 2016, the “Every 15 Minutes” program came to Eleanor Roosevelt High School to show the dangers and tragedies that can arise from drunk driving. On the first day, students gathered at the front of the school to witness a crash scene that resulted from teenagers drinking and driving. Selected students who participated in the event acted out the aftermath of the crash, which featured a real life response from emergency services. Juniors and seniors watched from the sidewalk as emergency responders treated the injured and carried out the “deceased” while the distraught driver looked on. On the second day, ERHS held an assembly for the juniors and seniors that served as a mock memorial service for the students involved in the drill. A video was put together that chronicled the events leading up to the tragic crash. Parents and students gave a testimony of the events, as well as a “goodbye” to loved ones. Even, E-Stem Academy director Kim Lawe shared her personal experience as a victim of a drunk driving accident. The emotionally charged assembly hit home for the students by showing the reality and consequences of drunk driving. Every 15 Minutes is a two-day program focusing on high school juniors and seniors, which challenges them to think about drinking, driving, personal safety, and the responsibility of making mature decisions. Along with alcohol-related crashes, it focuses on the impact that their decisions would have on family and friends. Conservation News

One of the hydrat ion stations at the Eastvale Com munity Center

Hydration Station

Water sold in single-use plastic bottles has been marketed as a convenience and has gained tremendous popularity over the years. But the convenience of bottled water also has its downside. It is estimated that only 20% of single-use bottles are actually recycled. With up to 80% of single-use bottles ending up on beaches, roadsides, and landfills, those bottles then can take between 450 and 1,000 years to decompose, which has a major negative impact on our environment. To encourage the community to reduce their usage of single-use bottles (and save money), JCSD installed water bottle filling stations at the Eastvale Community Center (ECC) and at its main office on Harrel Street. The hydration stations at the ECC are located near the restrooms, and the water bottle filling station at JCSD’s main office on Harrel Street is in the lobby. Be sure to bring a reusable water bottle when visiting these locations to enjoy fresh, clean, and cold water for free. As an added incentive, reusable and insulated water bottles (pictured on the left) will be given to each person who signs up for or renews their annual membership at the Eastvale Community Center or Harada Neighborhood Center. These water bottles will only be available while supplies last.

Diggin’ Earth Day April 22, 2016, marked the 46th annual celebration of Earth Day, which started in the United States and became a global effort in the 1990s. The annual event aims to inspire, challenge ideas, ignite passion, and motivate people to implement actions that address environmental issues. This year, JCSD partnered with Dr. Augustine Ramirez Intermediate School and 225 students to plant water-wise and butterfly-friendly shrubs at the ECC, Providence Ranch Park, and Cedar Creek Park. Prior to Earth Day, JCSD’s Conservation Coordinator visited participating students to discuss what would be planted and what benefit each plant provided the environment. Every Day is Earth Day Don’t wait until April 22 to act with the earth in mind. Every day should be treated as Earth Day. One simple act can make a big impact, such as using less disposable plastic. According to the Earth Day Network, nearly 300 million tons of plastic is produced each year to make bags, bottles, packages, and other items for people all over the world. Unfortunately, only about 10% of the plastic used globally is properly recycled and reused.

JCSD’s Parks and Recreation Department staff members and Conservation Coordinator (pictured above) along with more than 200 students from Dr. Augustine Ramirez Intermediate School planted greenery in various locations in celebration of Earth Day.

For more ideas on how to be more environmentally friendly, visit the Earth Day Network website at: www.earthday.org
