VIII Konkani Yerhl constructions he Jesuit and Franciscan vocabularies of the l6th and lTth centuries, though secondarily they also comprehend sizable material

of

social and religious character, which can be explored profitably

ln the respective fields,

prirrarily

were compiled for linguistic aims, that is,

the foreign missionaries learn the vernacular language for the purpose of evangelization. And this job of studying the local tongue was wonderfully carried out by a few scholarly padres, who, besides the religious zeal, were endowed with privilfeged intelligence and aptitude for strenuous work; they also had the good sense to approach and avail of the native to help

experts, tbe bramanes puranistas, as Diogo Ribeiro, S J., called them. The above lexicons present not only a copious compilation of vocables

of the rich and variegated Konkani language, but also furnish its

basic

phonetic, morphological, syntactic and semantic directives, on which a structure of its grammar can be framed. In the following pages are given

of Konkani verbal constructions, collected from the portuguese-Konkani tomee of both Jesuit and Franciscan vocabularies. some hundreds
