AUTUMN ’23 THE HEXAGON SOUTH STREET CONCERT HALL

AT THE HEXAGON IN NOVEMBER FAR FROM SAINTS

WELCOME to an exciting autumn season at Reading Arts…

We’re getting ready for the very special ‘Hexabition’, celebrating 45 years of The Hexagon. Part of Heritage Open Days 2023, join us on 16 & 17 September for exclusive tours taking you behind the scenes to discover the inner workings of the iconic venue. Plus, you’ll have the chance of a nostalgic look back at some of the famous names and shows that have graced The Hexagon stage, with displays and memorabilia from yesteryear. See page 5 for further details.

Looking forward… Big acts from the world of comedy and music continue to ill The Hexagon with, amongst others, Dawn French, Beverley Knight, Rob Brydon, Jimmy Carr, Jools Holland and classical concerts from our resident Orchestra The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra... all set to entertain you this autumn.

And of course, what would Christmas be without Panto?

Children’s TV Megastar Justin Fletcher and his partner in crime, Reading’s favourite Dame, Paul Morse are back once again starring in this year’s Panto, the spellbinding Sleeping Beauty. Oh yes they are!

On Thursday 7 September you are invited to South Street’s Members Night and Season Preview. All are welcome to attend, and after a free welcome drink, you’ll have the opportunity to chat with Artistic Director, John Luther and the South Street team as they take a close look at the coming season.

While at The Concert Hall, there is a definite comedy vibe with Mark Watson, Bridget Christie, Babatunde Aleshe, Jen Brister and John Robins all set to appear, along with Classical Music Alive concerts from The Carducci String Quartet and Elena Urioste, Violin & Tom Poster, Piano

We hope that you can be part of The Hexagon anniversary celebrations and look out for information on the exciting new Studio Theatre later this year.

Where has the year gone?

Where has the summer gone?

Well, we might have had a somewhat autumnal summer, but things are definitely heating up for the autumn season all over town. Many of our wonderful venues and organisations have spent the summer planning and announcing their shows for September onwards. Like Progress Theatre and Reading Rep Theatre, who both have some wonderful shows planned, as well as both branching out into comedy nights! Or Jazz In Reading and Readifolk, who continue to attract some of the top names in jazz and folk (respectively).

September also marks the start of the new school year – and that applies to plenty of our local theatre, dance and music schools too. From hip hop to Irish dance, from rock music to musical theatre, there’s plenty of ways youngsters can get involved and hone their talents with the likes of Reading School Of Dance, StageAbility Reading, The Rock Academy and more! And adults can learn new skills (or rediscover old ones) too, with new courses from New Directions, ballet and tap classes With Sonia Brown – and even accredited tasting courses from Thames Valley Wine School!

And we can’t not talk about the other end of this upcoming season and the C-word –and our Christmas list of events is already starting to grow! Kids can meet favourite Christmas characters and families can enjoy seasonal screenings (with an early Christmas dinner too!). There’s festive theatre (It’s A Wonderful Life!), festive concerts (John Otway back for his annual visit and crooning by candlelight in the Minster!) and much more – and that list is only going to get bigger the closer we get to December! You can find that at whatsonreading.com/christmas-in-reading

And that really is the tip of the iceberg when it comes to all the fab events and activities heading your way over the next few months from all over Reading’s arts, culture and heritage sector. And if you know of any events or organisations not yet listed with us, send them our way!

Enjoy!

READING TODAY’s Phil Creighton catches up with the stars of the spellbinding panto, Sleeping Beauty.

Magical fairies, spinning wheels, and a long, long lie-in – just some of the reasons why Sleeping Beauty remains one of the most popular pantomimes around and it’s coming to The Hexagon this Christmas.

A wicked fairy’s curse sees young Beauty prick her finger on a spinning wheel and fall into an enchanted sleep. It’s up to the Prince to save the day, aided (or not) by an ensemble cast headed up by CBeebies megastar Justin Fletcher as Justy The Jester and his panto mum, Paul Morse as Nanny Bubbles.

The double act has been a recipe for success at The Hexagon for close to a decade now. Justin is now writing as well as performing, meaning the slapstick humour and deft comic routines are tailor-made.

“It’s my 10th year in Reading, it’s a fabulous feeling to have been here so long and with a brilliant cast,” Paul says.

“Justin and I have learned to bounce off each other and how each other’s humour works. He knows me, and he probably writes with my voice in his head. That makes our routines stronger from the start.”

Although Paul is a veteran of pantomime and one of the country’s top dames, it is the first time he is appearing in Sleeping Beauty.

“I was hoping I was going to play Beauty, and then my hopes were dashed,” he jokes. “I’ve heard we fall asleep in act two, so it’s going to be a very easy show!”

More seriously, he continues: “To do something new is brilliant. It keeps you as a performer on your toes and you can bring something different to it. So, the audience will feel there’s a completely different show because it’s brand-new to us as well.”

Also returning are Carl Tracey, last year’s Jack in Jack and the Beanstalk, and former good

fairy Rachel Delooze, who will be playing Wicked Fairy Venomous.

The pair can’t wait.

“I love it here, I really had my fingers crossed they’d ask me back,” says Rachel. “When I got the phone call it was so exciting to learn I’d be a villain – I haven’t played one since my first year here. It’s going to be really fun and really different from what I’m used to.

“I had a taste for it in Cinderella, and I can’t wait to hear those boos. I know the audience is going to respond so well. I hope I give them what they want. I’m very excited.”

Carl was pushing for a return before the final curtain came down on Jack and the Beanstalk. “You don’t have to ask me, absolutely I will be there,” he said of the initial conversations, so smitten he is with Reading’s favourite six-sided venue, its staff and audiences, as well as his castmates: “It feels like a big family.”

Rachel adds: “It’s so nice to have a relationship with everyone here, not just the cast. We know the technical crew, the front-of-house team –everybody is so friendly and it’s a lovely, lovely atmosphere.”

Carl says this will be his first time as a prince in Sleeping Beauty: “I’m excited to see what this year will have in store for us. I love being a prince, it’s great. The costume is lovely and very regal. I’m very, very happy to be back.”

Rachel says of the script: “Justin, knowing us so well, means he can create the roles around us. For me, that’s what I can do in terms of vocals, I love it. I am really looking forward to the rehearsals and getting stuck in the script.”

Carl feels in very safe hands: “Because Justin knows us really well as people, as well as performers, he knows what we’re capable of. He’s got a brilliant eye and an ear for all that stuff. And he’s funny. If he says something’s going to work, I trust him.”

This is a special year for The Hexagon as it marks its 45th anniversary. Rachel says: “They’re gonna pull out all the stops.” And Paul adds: “The show will be spectacular, it will go up a notch because it’s such a special year and hopefully, for my 10th year, I will bring even more to the show because it’s such an anniversary for all of us.”

Justin says: “It’s going to be a magical Christmas at The Hexagon, Sleeping Beauty has been a joy to write and it’s being performed by some of my favourite actors. Come along and enjoy the show.”

Sleeping Beauty is performed from Saturday, December 9, through to Sunday, January 7, at The Hexagon. Tickets cost from £14, and there is a mixture of relaxed and signed performances across the run. For more details, call the box office on 0118 960 6060, or log on to whatsonreading.com
