We have had the opportunity to meet and do business with some of the best businesses in the area. We are known to and appreciated by residents and elected officials from the beaches through downtown to St. Petersburg’s eastern shore, in Tallahassee and Washington. It is not a career path without challenges! William Randolph Hearst started his publishing career with The San Francisco Examiner and $80 million from the Homestake Silver Mine his daddy gave him for his 21st birthday. He would have gone bankrupt had his mistress not given him her savings to go on. The only quote I recall from his autobiography is “You can come out of the publishing business with a small fortune if you start with a big enough one.” Not having a wealthy mistress, I have had to be more conservative. Hearst is credited with starting the Spanish-American War. Most of what we have accomplished is much more local and way more peaceful. We moved to St. Pete Beach 35 years ago, when our only son, Jordan, was a freshman boarder at Admiral Farragut Academy. Pete’s maternal grandfather had done well in life and wanted to help provide his great-grandchildren a better education than they might get otherwise. Jordan had boarded at Admiral Farragut and, as an only child, liked the education, but found living there confining. So, Renee and I decided to move close enough for him to be a day student. We held on to the home we moved from, knowing we would be back. That has been Jordan’s home, while we made a life for ourselves here. We had not realized the differences we would find, living at the beach rather than an hour inland. We found the weather better, the people are easier going, more fun-loving and there are a wealth of entertainment options with way less traffic jams than inland. After starting Paradise NEWS here, we planned to stay indefinitely. Jordan is 50 this summer. What I did not realize at the time was how rewarding owning a home on the barrier islands would be. We were going to rent while Jordan finished high school but owning a home in Pass-a-Grille turned out to be a better option. We bought our first beach home, a 1930’s vintage all-wood home on 30th Ave., at the north end of Pass-a-Grille. Twelve years later, when we sold it for double, it gave us back ALL of the payments we had ever made on it, including principal, interest, taxes, and even insurance. Our second home in north St. Pete Beach is now worth more than three times what we paid 22 years ago. It may be like that all over the state today, but having lived “in Paradise” for 30 years feels like a blessing from heaven. Paradise NEWS has done its part to allow us to live here, and vacation once or twice each year, so it has truly been a symbiotic relationship. We publish monthly except in July and September, so in this issue we have tried to condense two months worth of information into a single issue. We mail 20,000+ copies to valuable residences at the beaches and downtown St. Petersburg, and distribute at least 10,000 more print copies in 400+ racks and stacks to reach visitors and other interested residents. Reaching 100,000+ in print, online, social media, web content, weekly eblasts, and more! SunRunner to Stimulate Development Around Stations The SunRunner bus rapid transit (BRT) is expected to start running from downtown to SPB beach in August. To increase walkability and economic activity at select nodes, which would also support BRT ridership, Kimley-Horn, a planning and design consultant based in North Carolina, developed a transit-oriented development study called “SunRunner Rising.” Forward Pinellas recently discussed the study, and the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority board members voted on it May 25. The 10.3-mile SunRunner will have a total of 30 stations. ST. PETE BEACH July 9th the city will open a time capsule that was buried near 8

By Peter Roos the brand new St. Pete Beach police headquarters on July 9, 1997. It should be interesting to see the changes in the past quarter century. For example, the police department was eliminated and its headquarters was demolished after the city embraced the Sheriff’s department, saving the city millions annually. There should be a copy of Paradise NEWS in there, probably with details about the last big concert in Pass-a-Grille. The Spin Doctors were a relatively unknown band that was booked as the last concert of a Spring Concert Series. The venue at Sand Key Park had a scheduling conflict, and promoters learned about the new Gulf Beaches Historical Museum needing a roof, so the venue was changed to Pass-aGrille. The very same night, a better known band, Three Dog Night, was playing at the Tierra Verde Club made famous by Guy Lombardo. As luck would have it, the Spin Doctors had their one big hit two weeks before the concert date and 10,000 people wanted to be at the concert. Another couple thousand were headed to Tierra Verde. About half made it. Many of the rest parked where they were and walked. The ensuing traffic snarl was epic, blocking the interstate exit at the Pinellas Bayway for ¼ mile in each direction. The Museum raised $16,000 in four hours. If you have not eaten in at Basil Leaf, 6355 Gulf Blvd., lately, you are in for a surprise. It looks more like Nori Thai and less like Annie Moore’s Irish Pub now. Owners Joy Xavagong has redecorated with granite, slate and Joy’s favorite colors. The bathrooms, which were a weak point, are now accessible and

awesome. They have also improved their take-out system to handle the volume they had during the pandemic. Next door, Odise Armata and his wife Mirella have added outdoor seating to complement the tables inside Odi’s Mediterranean Kitchen, offering award-winning gyros, dinners, amazing salads and deli from 10am-6pm, Mon.-Sat., 727-564-0100. Mirella’s Talent Salon is adjacent, staffed and ready to provide expert haircare of all comers in this slower season.

Dolphin Beach Resort sold SCG Beach Hospitably, led by the Bucaneers’ Co-Chair Bryan Glazer, purchased the Dolphin Beach Resort, with plans to renovate. In August 2018 the Glazers acquired The Vinoy Resort & Golf Club in downtown St. Petersburg for $188.5 million, or $512,000/ room. The Vinoy resort is undergoing a massive renovation and repositioning. Phase 1 is scheduled to complete at the end of this year. The Plasencia Group helped with this transaction and the sale of “more than 2,500 rooms across the Sunshine State in the past year, at an average value of nearly $350,000/room,” according to The Plasencia Group. “We look forward to seeing what the Glazers have in store for this generational resort that holds a spot of pride in the heart of St. Pete Beach.”

A Road on the Sand? At the suggestion of staff, city commissioners will consider a new and all-encompassing beach ordinance that incorporates new regulations for using St. Pete Beach’s sandy beach. A draft ordinance submitted to the city’s Beach Stewardship Committee states that permits to drive on the beach will be restricted to public works and public safety vehicles, those involved in permitted commercial activities or special events, and those involved in mechanical beach cleaning. Russ Kimball was named 2022 Tourism Person of the Year at the Tampa Bay Beaches Chamber of Commerce annual tourism gathering, May 5th. Join USF in the Fight Against Alzheimer’s Disease The University of South

Florida PACT (Preventing Alzheimer’s with Cognitive Training) study needs healthy volunteers to join the fight against Alzheimer’s disease. The study focuses on using computerized brain training exercises with the hope to reduce dementia risk. If you or a loved one are interested in more information, please visit the PACT study website, www.pactstudy.org or call 727-873-4090. The USF PACT team is looking for 3,000 healthy volunteers to combat the growing incidence of dementia such as Alzheimer’s disease. PACT is currently enrolling adults aged 65 and older with no signs of cognitive impairment, dementia, or neurological disorders. Once accepted into the study, participants will begin their exercises at a PACT site in St. Petersburg, Tampa, Winter Haven, or Lakeland. Past research shows that computerized training can help maintain mental and physical function. Healthy older adults who were prescribed 10 sessions of such training had a 29% lower risk of

dementia after 10 years. Those completing additional training benefited even more: they were 48% less likely to show signs of dementia 10 years later. African Americans and Hispanics are especially encouraged to enroll in PACT, as they are nearly twice as likely to suffer from dementia. As of today, there are no proven cures or treatments that stop the progression of Alzheimer’s disease, the most common form of dementia. The few medications currently on the market only provide short-term management of symptoms for those who already have dementia. This is why studies like PACT are so important. Exercise & Joint Pain

Motion is lotion and the right low-impact exercises such as swimming and walking can ease arthritis pain and stiffness. It increases strength and flexibility, reduces joint pain, controls weight, improves balance and helps combat fatigue. Lack of exercise actually makes your joints more painful and stiff. The muscles and surrounding tissue help maintain support for your bones, and not exercising weakens those supporting muscles and stresses your joints. Talk with your doctor before starting an arthritis exercise program, then consider what’s within your limits and what level of exercise will work best for the joints involved. They might recommend a physical therapist to help you develop the right exercise program that might include range of motion, strengthening, aerobic exercises or other activities such as walking the dog. Range-of-motion exercises relieve stiffness and increase your ability to move your joints through their full range of motion. These exercises might include movements such as raising your arms over your head or rolling your shoulders forward and backward. In most cases, these exercises can be done daily. Strengthening exercises such as weight training can help you build strong muscles that help support and protect your joints. Low-impact aerobic exercise such as walking, bicycling, swimming, and using an elliptical machine can help improve cardiovascular health, control weight, improve stamina and energy. Body awareness exercises, such as yoga or tai chi can help improve balance, prevent falls, improve posture and coordination, and promote relaxation. Be sure to tell your instructor about your condition and avoid positions or movements that can cause pain. Start slowly to ease your joints gently into exercise if you haven’t been active for a while. If you push yourself too hard, you can overwork your muscles and worsen your joint pain. If you feel pain, take a break. Slow down if you notice swelling or redness in your joints. Before you begin, apply warm heat to relax your joints and relieve any pain for about 20 minutes. After exercising, apply ice to your joints for up to 20 minutes. With joint pain, you want to stay hydrated and reduce inflammation by avoiding heavily processed foods, red meat, foods high in sugar or MSG, fried foods, alcohol, refined carbohydrates, gluten, and purines.

Of the more than 1,000 deaths, the state found 103 of them were watercraft-related, seven were crushed or drowned in flood gates and canal locks, and another seven were killed by human-related causes, such as poaching or rope entanglement. More than half of the deceased manatees were not necropsied, or their cause of death has been undetermined. Only about 6,000 manatees left in all of Florida, the nonprofit organization Save the Manatee Club previously told CBS News. With that high rate of mortalities as a backdrop, Gov. Ron DeSantis announced May 2 in Jacksonville he will sign off on more than $30 million in manatee care, rehabilitation and other support allocated recently by the legislature. Co-sponsors of the House bill were Representatives Darren Soto (D, 9th District) and Vern Buchanan (R, 16th District). “This historic funding will support important restoration efforts across the state to benefit our manatees and Florida’s natural environment,” DeSantis said. 22

Another $5.3 million will bolster manatee response abilities, including hiring 12 more employees for the FWC. About $160,000 will support increased aerial surveys of manatees. The Save the Manatee Club praised the funding as a needed step in the right direction for a wildlife disaster that state and federal agencies refer to as an “unusual mortality event.” “Due to the unprecedented severity of the ongoing Unusual Mortality Event (UME) – in which more than 1,600 manatees have died statewide over the last 16 months – these and additional extraordinary measures are called for in order to protect manatees and their critical habitat,” said Patrick Rose, the group’s executive director. (Save the Manatee Club was started in 1981 by singersongwriter Jimmy Buffett & former Florida Gov. and U.S. Senator Bob Graham. As an example,“Environmental conditions in portions of the Indian River Lagoon remain a concern,” the state’s FWC says on its website.“Researchers have attributed this UME to starvation due to the lack [of] seagrasses in the Indian River Lagoon. In recent years, poor water quality in the Lagoon has led to harmful algal blooms and widespread seagrass loss.” The state says that “most of the seagrass in the Indian River Lagoon has disappeared,” and that the lagoon has seen declining rates of seagrass, a staple food for manatees, since 2011. The lagoon has been hit by several algal blooms since that time, which reduces the amount of light able to hit the water and allows seagrass and other aquatic plant life to grow. “The effects of prolonged starvation are detrimental,” the FWC says on its website, and can result in organ atrophy, metabolic and reproductive shutdown, decreased mobility and susceptibility to disease. In January, Florida Fish and Wildlife initiated a supplemental feeding trial in the northern area of the lagoon, where most of the deceased manatees have been found, to provide “some aid” to manatees. The state wildlife commission and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service set up their emergency feeding program at a Florida Power & Light Co. power plant south of Titusville where manatees gather during winter cold snaps. “We must insist that the state of Florida and the Environmental Protection Agency join forces to ensure that improved water quality standards are set and met if we are going to restore these aquatic ecosystems for the long-term future,” Save the Manatee Club’s Rose said. Zoo Tampa team readies rehabbed manatee for return to wild.

For 30 years, Zoo Tampa at Lowry Park has been widely known for caring for critically injured, sick, and orphaned manatees at the David A. Straz, Jr. Manatee Critical Care Center. Molly Lipincott, a Zoo Tampa curator, told Paradise NEWS, “This vulnerable species has been at the heart of our commitment to the conservation of Florida wildlife. “Our animal care and veterinary teams are often called upon to assist in the field with rescuing orphaned, sick or injured manatees. When a concerned citizen spots a manatee they think may be in trouble, we respond. Since 1991, we have treated over 500 manatees and have returned more than 280 of them to their native waters. Manatees are strong, resilient, and can overcome some of the most severe injuries with the care that they receive at our Critical Care Center. “There’s nothing more rewarding than when a manatee has fully recovered and is ready to return into its natural habitat. It is an awe-inspiring and often emotional moment for the team and our community when a manatee is released, sometimes after many years of care and rehabilitation. “Our Center was the country’s first nonprofit, acute care facility of its kind specifically dedicated to critical care of wild manatees and is one of just four manatee rehabilitation centers in the state of Florida. As manatee patients recover, our visitors can see this life-saving care in real time in the recovery pools of Manatee Mangrove. “To enhance animal welfare and expand our mission to save Florida wildlife, we recently completed an upgrade to the water filtration system at our David A. Straz, Jr. Manatee Critical Care Center. This upgraded life support system allows us to provide advanced, specialized care to our patients, and enables us to treat even the most severe cases.”

Because 90% of a watermelon’s weight is water, it’s one of the best fruits for weight loss; a 100-gram serving contains only 30 calories. WATERMELON FETA SALAD Cube and strain watermelon while prepping other ingredients. In a small bowl, whisk all dressing ingredients together, then set aside. Add the cubed watermelon and fresh mint to a large bowl. Toss dressing, transfer to salad and crumble cheese on top. Mangia! Salad Ingredients: 6 cups cubed watermelon, 4 oz. crumbled feta, crumbled, ½ cup fresh chopped mint Dressing Ingredients: 2 tbsp. olive oil, juice of 1.5 limes, ½ tsp sea salt, ¼ tsp black pepper WATERMELON MARTINI To make the watermelon juice, blend, and strain. Coming soon is Butcher’s revised edition of his earlier National Parks book that includes larger images, additional photos, and reflections of his experiences traveling through 34 national parks and preserves. From the redwood forests of California to the Everglade swamps of Florida, Clyde captures the essence of our natural spaces and treasured landscapes. He shares his personal connections while experiencing these protected lands, hoping these beautiful images of our nation’s parks and preserves will stir others to want to explore nature’s beauty and inspire others to become advocates for protecting these public lands for future generations. These images examine the power and fragility of the natural world in a way that invites renewed introspection of one’s own relationship with nature. We had the pleasure of meeting eco-warrior Clyde Butcher at a book signing and talk. His photographs reveal wild and natural places where few humans have ventured, with images capturing remarkable solitude and wonder.

Through July 31, The James Museum hosts an homage to nature: ANSEL ADAMS: THE MASTERWORKS & CLYDE BUTCHER: AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL, two masters of landscape photography showcasing the beauty, grandeur, and complexity of the American landscape as interpreted by Adams and Butcher through a series of distinctive, meticulously rendered black and white photographs.

His large-scale dramatic images are a valued artistic expression of what we have, and what we might lose if we do not protect our environment. Butcher grew up in California and later relocated to Florida, finding peace and his life’s mission within the Everglades. Butcher is an ambassador to the arts and environment, a diplomat of the remaining wild places, and an emissary to the hearts and minds of Americans to protect our country’s natural places. “Many people regard Clyde Butcher as the Ansel Adams of Florida,” said Emily Kapes, Curator of Art at The James Museum. “But this exhibition shows such a variety of his stunning landscapes from all over the country. His perspectives are just incredible.”

We asked St. Pete resident and our favorite foodie friend Jerry Notaro to share with PN how St. Pete Pride got its start. One of St. Pete Pride’s earliest torchbearers, he was intimately involved in the annual June celebration’s nascent beginning. Notaro served as the St. Pete Pride’s Board Secretary, historian, and archivist. He came to USF St. Petersburg as an openly gay librarian and has championed gay rights and related human rights issues for decades. He participated in an early 1979 gay pride parade in New York that commemorated the 10th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots and took part in the first gay pride parade in Pinellas County in 1989 at Williams Park. Nearly 50 people attended; three decades later, St. Pete’s Pride celebration today is the largest in Florida with events throughout the month.

Protect Your Pets From Summer Sun It’s officially summertime! That means swimming pools, the beach, and…heat. We all know that the heat and humidity this time of year can get down right oppressive. AC will be cranking in our homes and businesses to give us some relief. But, how do our pets handle the heat? Breeds that have genetic airway issues such as English Bulldogs, French Bulldogs, Boxers and the like are more prone to heat exhaustion and stroke. Canines use their breathing as a heat exchange to regulate their body temperature by breathing out the hot air from their lungs and breathing in the cooler air. This process becomes inefficient the higher the humidity and temperature are.

When you add in the restricted airways of these breeds, the process becomes highly inefficient. It is best to walk them early morning or late evening and not to exercise these breeds during the hottest parts of the day. This same rule applies to breeds with heavy coats. They will be insulated and protected for longer, but once their internal body temperature starts to rise it can be a rapid process. During these hot months we get a lot of sun and UV radiation. This increase in exposure will cause the temperature of the pavement to increase to the point where you could fry an egg on it. Our dogs’ paws are also subject to this punishing heat, which can cause blistering and sloughing of the hard protective keratinized layers. This will lead to pain and sometimes infection. Be especially careful not to walk your dog on dark asphalt or tar surfaces. Some dogs are more prone to heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Symptoms are a progression through heavy panting, wobbly gait, inability to walk or stand, tongue and

The Tampa Museum of Art (another Blue Star Museum; see www.arts.gov/initiatives/ blue-star-museums for a complete list) has announced a $25 million gift from Dick Corbett in support of its Centennial Capital Campaign for Renovation and Expansion. The single largest private gift ever made to a Florida-based public art museum and art education center will support the museum’s capital campaign, which began in 2020.

American Landmark Apartments has selected multimedia artist Brian B.V. Cooper as its 2022 Artist in Residence in Tampa. The program, now entering its third year, provides no-cost housing and studio space for up to one year for select visual artists. In return, grant recipients are asked to implement on-site community art events and educational programs, including classes for adults and children. Cooper will literally hang out at Amira at Westly in Tampa’s Town N Country neighborhood. He will offer a variety of classes and workshops on interactive painting and drawing, video production, internet editing and digital painting for residents. Ukrainian soldiers discovered a trove of ancient Greek urns in Odessa while preparing military fortifications against the Russian invasion.

The Ukrainian 126th Territorial Defense was digging trenches in the Black Sea port city when members unearthed a cache of 2,500-year-old amphorae, ancient ceramic vessels with narrow necks that were used for storing and transporting liquids and dry goods. Despite the ongoing warfare, the soldiers were able to transport the artifacts to the Odessa Archaeological Museum.

Creative Pinellas has chosen the Pinellas Recovers Arts & Cultural Organization Grant recipients. Twenty organizations received grants ranging from $2,500 to $50,000 after careful review by a panel of leaders of arts and granting organizations. The purpose of the grants, funded through a $500,000 grant Creative Pinellas received from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), is to assist arts and cultural organizations in their recovery from the COVID-19 crisis. Sandi and Amber had been running area nightclubs for decades! Their challenging lifestyle eventually became overwhelming, so they looked for alternatives. They began backyard beekeeping at their home in Tampa 14 years ago over concern with the massive loss of bees on the planet, rescuing and re-homing bees all over the West Coast of Florida. In 2019, Amber became a Yoga instructor and Sandi a certified Ayurvedic practitioner. Their focus became to help people with modern life ailments regain and retain good health. Their goal is to help build equilibrium and harmony in your body and offer relief from your imbalances. After success blending teas for friends with specific needs and seeing the success, they started making and marketing basic teas that would cover a broad spectrum of ailments. They joined the Corey Market in the summer of 2000 offering products that incorporate Apitherapy, (using bee products for disease prevention or treatment) and Ayurvedic Medicine, which offers a harmonizing and synergistic effect when combined with healthful diets, herbs, aromatherapy and a healthy lifestyle. We celebrate freedom and democracy on this All-American holiday, which this year, we realize that democracy is still a battle being waged outside America, as we stand with Ukraine. Parades, backyard cook-outs, baseball games and fireworks are the traditional favorites, but let’s add drinking beer and buying products that donate some of their sales to this courageous country, as well as supporting free speech around the world… and at home. Locally, Keel Farms is one of 24 breweries around the world to create a special batch of Resolve, including breweries from Poland, Ireland, England, and Germany. The initiative encourages brewers to use one of 42 North’s two recipes – an India Pale Kellerbier and a Kellerbier – and add their own twist. Labels featuring a sunflower, the national flower of Ukraine, are available to download and edit depending on the ingredients used. EVENTS Plans are still in flux for many communities and could change so check the city website and social media for updates. If you don’t have a boat, consider booking StarLite Cruises out of Clearwater or St. Pete Beach for a dazzling dinner and amazing view. Most fireworks start around 9pm and all events are subject to change (weather, etc.). You’ll find fireworks, food trucks and music at Largo Central Park (paid parking available). Safety Harbor Waterfront Park hosts a July 4th Celebration with children’s activities, live entertainment, food vendors, and the city parade is 2-4pm. Gulfport will have a kid’s fishing derby, a family sand sculpture contest, parade, and fireworks. This Independence Day, the city of St. Pete Beach will be launching fireworks from the east end of Corey Avenue. The fireworks will begin at 9pm, and St. Pete Beach residents will be able to view from their backyards as well as local businesses, restaurants, and hotels (reserve your spot now). Or pack a picnic and set up with the family at Horan Park. Downtown St. Petersburg will host a July 4th celebration that includes the St. Pete Pier Run, entertainment, live music, refreshments, and fireworks.
