PUBLISHERS MESSAGE So Much To Be Thankful For PETER & RENEE ROOS

You can look in almost any direction these days and find people and conditions worse than our own. Earthquakes flatten entire villages in Afghanistan. Russia is still trying to recapture Ukraine. In the Middle East, Israel is at war. We pray for peace. And on Nov. 11th, we are thankful every day for those serving in the armed forces now and the veterans who sacrificed and served to keep America safe. Here at home, Tampa Bay experienced six tornados and hurricane damage in the last few weeks. It could have been so much worse. Ft. Myers Beach is still rebuilding from Ian. Meanwhile Renee and I saw a perfect “ring of fire” in New Mexico on Oct. 14 and went to the largest hot air balloon event in the world within 24 hours. We are reminded how blessed we are. We love that we found a career that contributes in many ways and brings enjoyment to people for almost 30 years and counting. Last month, Paradise News saluted a few of the eco heroes that protect and clean our beaches and the Gulf waters we love. You can help too. Volunteer for a beach clean-up. Trash Pirates in Madeira Beach, for example, meet at Waterfront Realty early on first Saturdays. Lots of other volunteer opportunities inside this issue. What are you thankful for? If you are a local, you can celebrate the break from highs in the nineties. If you are a visitor, you can be thankful for the recently replenished sand on the beaches and for your freedom to travel where you wish. If you are a returning seasonal resident helping support the shops, restaurants, and services we enjoy all year: welcome back, we are thankful for you, too. When you encounter our advertisers, please thank them for advertising in Paradise NEWS, so we can continue to send them to you. Renee and I are thankful too for the efforts of Buddy Baker, our Arts and Leisure and Events column editor. His listings have been swelling with options for your enjoyment. If you love the way the magazine looks, thank the talented Janet Nummi, our art and production director. In addition to our expanded content list – mostly by Executive Editor Nanette Wiser, Art News editor Caron Schwartz and Encouraging Word’s Dennis Merritt Jones – we have robust dining and home improvement sections and a growing health section. This month, we also feature how you can give back in articles by Steve Traiman and Holly Hargett. Thanks to our digital coordinator who celebrates ten years on our team and does a terrific job with our website www.paradisenewsfl.com, Thursday eblast, and social media. Thanks to our advertisers, especially our faithful realtors, old and new for your continued support and to our loyal readers, without whom our lives would feel far less fulfilled. If you know a good company that could use more business, suggest us. Give them your old copy. When you encounter our advertisers, please thank them for advertising in Paradise NEWS, so we can continue to send you your favorite magazine. Happy Thanksgiving! www.ParadiseNewsFL.com Check out Paradise NEWS online, in print, and like us on social media. Sign up on our website for the FREE weekly eblast on what to do around town.

In October, Lowack named Kylie Diaz as the organization’s vice president of community engagement. Diaz joins Visit St. Pete/ Clearwater from the Clearwater Marine Aquarium where she served as the director of tourism since 2018. JINGLE BALL Niall Horan, “The Voice” coach and former member of One Direction, will headline iHeartRadio’s Jingle Ball tour in Tampa this year. Horan, along with Teddy Swims, Zara Larsson, Doechii, Paul Russell, Kaliii and Lawrence will stop at Amalie Arena 11/26 @7pm.

UP UP & AWAY In October, a remodeled Aldi grocery store reopened in Skyway Marina and a new Aldi store is coming to west St. Petersburg in the shopping center next to Tyrone Square Mall, taking over the Hitchcock’s Green Market space. Also moving forward for Skyway Marina is Altis Cardinal Development’s 34.3-acre Skyway Village, a multi-phased mixed-use development featuring 2,084 housing units, 80,920 square feet of commercial space, 22,500 square feet of office space, 119,160 square feet of accessory self-storage use and 4,000 parking spaces and hopefully Sprouts Farmers Market.

LOCAL ARTIST Pamela Joy Trow’s newest public artwork debuted in October. She has been awarded 11 signal and utility boxes through four public arts commissions: eight boxes in the city of Pompano Beach, two boxes in the city of Sunrise, and now, one box in Pinellas County. Creative Pinellas and Pinellas County chose her to do one of the nine new signal boxes in Pinellas County. Says Trow: “My signal box pays homage to the beautiful birds of Florida. Although not a profound subject, I wanted to approach it using bold patterned graphics, cropping tightly to each bird, in a light Florida palette. I could not be happier with the end result. The ‘Birds of a Feather’ box is located in Palm Harbor between the highly trafficked streets Sandy Point Rd and East Lake Rd at the Pinellas Trail. This location gave me a gift. My sister, who was so excited to see this box, passed away three months ago, and my parents, several years ago now. My box is located around the corner of where they both lived for over 20 years. What were the chances?”

“Acknowledging the good that you already have in your life is the foundation for all abundance.” –Eckhart Tolle

TIERRA VERDE In Sept., Pinellas County told Tierra Verde they hope to provide the proposed agreement for the Rec Center before the end of the year. The county expects a response from TVCA prior to bid-out for construction in late spring. Also in Oct., Pinellas County sent the TVCA a tentative timeline for the Grand Canal Dredging Project with a budget estimate of $ 1,500,000 and project duration of 120 consecutive calendar days.

Sand dunes have already been constructed on Sunset Beach to provide storm protection lost through erosion caused by the storm. A contractor is now planting vegetation (mostly sea oats) to help hold the sand in place. “We are planting four different native species of grasses,” said Pinellas County Environmental Specialist Lauren Doing. “We are hoping by planting this vegetation that

Residents and visitors are reminded to stay off the dunes and outside of the active beach construction areas, for their own safety and to preserve the dunes. Emergency beach restoration is also ongoing at Pass-a-Grille, Belleair Beach and Upham Beach. Indian Rocks Beach is scheduled next for restoration. To place the necessary sand and construct dunes, Pinellas County must obtain shortterm construction easements from some property owners. These county easements are temporary and different from the perpetual easements required by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USSACE) project. Pinellas County is investing visitor-generated Hotel Bed Tax funds (known as the Pinellas County Tourist Development Tax) from tourists’ overnight stays to pay for the emergency beach reconstruction and other important tourism-related initiatives, such as the new Rays Stadium. BEACH RESTORATION UPDATE Pinellas County’s efforts continue with emergency sand dune construction nearing completion on Sunset Beach in Treasure Island. Vegetation planting in the dunes is ongoing; residents and visitors reminded to stay off the dunes. The county’s tourism tax is funding the emergency beach restoration and other important tourism-related projects. Helping to restore critical dune areas ravaged by Hurricane Idalia is a massive endeavor. “We lost whole dunes, back to the parking lot in some areas,” said Pinellas County Coastal Management Coordinator Dr. John Bishop. “These dunes add a lot of added protection for our community, for the infrastructure, public infrastructure, the homes, they help to stop the storm surge. But they don’t help do that if they are gone.”

Giving Thanks

By Steve Traiman & Nanette Wiser

Thanksgiving is the season of giving thanks for all we have and cherish. But there are many less fortunate families in the Tampa Bay area – especially those with kids who are looking forward to holiday gifts and clothes. We are blessed with many groups who spearhead toy and gift drives in our area. All request unwrapped toys and clothes so they can be gift-wrapped for age-appropriate kids.

You can do more than donate clothes, toys, and gifts. Volunteers and financial donations are needed at all these organizations, especially Big Brothers & Big Sisters of Tampa Bay, PARC Center for Disabilities, Hands Across The Bay and many more. The American Legions and VFW in Tampa Bay also provide support to those who serve and consider finding out what your local first responders might need (bake cookies, make a meal) and what holiday fundraisers they are involved with. On 12/3, The OCC Roadhouse Annual Toy Bike Ride will rev their engines and gather toys for a good cause. www.occroadhouse.com Habitat for Humanity More than 70 families are currently waiting to build a Habitat home. Your support gives these individuals and their families a chance at a more stable life. If your heart is in their mission, please consider supporting them in any way possible. All Habitat for Humanity of Pinellas and West Pasco Counties donations are tax-deductible as allowed by law and will be acknowledged with a letter you may use for those purposes. Volunteers needed, whether you are a builder or have never used a hammer, YOU can make a difference in your community. www.habitatpwp.org

The Kind Mouse More than 7,000 children in Pinellas County live with chronic hunger and more than 36,000 live every day with food insecurities. Kind Mouse feeds children who have nothing outside of school. www.thekindmouse.org U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Most Tampa Bay area towns support this drive annually, with the local Post Office providing drop-off gift bins. www.toysfortots.org Salvation Army Angel Tree: A spokesperson for St Pete Beach City Clerk Amber LaRue says that many residents and businesses have supported their Angel Tree for many years. www.saangeltree.org CASA Pinellas Their mission is challenging the societal acceptance of all forms of domestic violence. If you missed the recent Scavenger Hunt fundraiser, you can bring donations to the store on 1st Ave. N, make a financial donation or volunteer. Volunteer opportunities include thrift store support, community education, outreach support, crisis intervention and providing safe environments for survivors of domestic violence and their children. www.casapinellas.org 12

The Island Grille & Raw Bar is a Tampa Bay star, beloved by locals and visitors for dining and relaxing. Whether it’s date night, a family luncheon or hanging with your gal pals or guys, the casually classy Island Grille always thrills with its waterfront views and Calypso vibe.

Under the seasoned eye of owner Steve Westphal, one of Florida’s most respected restaurateurs, you’ll be delighted by the spectacular appetizers, mussels, fresh seafood (grouper, salmon, tuna, crab cakes), raw bar and steaks (Black Angus sirloin or tenderloin). Cold water oysters (raw, steamed, or fried) or char-grilled oysters with tantalizing sauces (garlic butter and parmesan, chipotle lime, casino-style) and the cream cheese and crab oven-baked oysters are the best in town. Shrimp your way can be grilled, Cajun, fried or coconut and the seafood baskets of oysters, grouper nuggets or shrimp come with tasty fries and coleslaw.

This island-inspired restaurant on Tierra Verde serves up great food, crafted cocktails, attentive service with a smile, bars both indoors and outdoors and live music (steel drum, jazz, island, acoustic) nightly and on Sunday, noon-4pm. There’s something for everyone. You can swim, drink, or dine poolside ($5 day pass) or watch your NFL/college sports on the flat screen LED TVs, even dance the night away al fresco. Boat in, drive over, or pedal on by. It’s worth the trip.

Go Island-style with shrimp and crab pasta, Calypso pork chop or po-boy. Fan favorites are the Island tacos, jerk BBQ chicken, lobster sliders, chopped salad, spicy tuna bowl, shrimp ceviche, lobster and crab-stuffed mushrooms and lobster mac n’ cheese. There’s also a terrific kids’ menu (chicken bites, fried shrimp, cheese quesadilla) and if you catch a fish, they’ll cook it and serve it family style! Save room for dessert, especially the drunken bread pudding and key lime pie.

The Island Grille is always upgrading and innovating. There’s a new chef, seasonal specials, an expanded raw oyster bar, new early bird three-course menu Mon.-Fri. 3-5:30pm (salad, entrée + 2 sides, dessert), new patio furniture, umbrellas, luxe floating docks, and interior embellishments (new carpet, booths, tableware) plus reimagined private dining areas.

Book your NEXT EVENT or PARTY large or small at Island Grille. Chef Eric will customize a menu for a sit-down dinner, multi-course lunch or dinner buffet or mix and mingle with hors d’oeuvres. During the holidays, Island Grille is offering a HOLIDAY BUFFET SPECIAL (minimum 20) for only $25/person. Call 727-767-0020 and tell us what you want!

The Wharf Restaurant & Sports Bar big portions, and something for everyone on the menu, all reasonably priced. Save room for Key Lime Pie.”

Locals love drinking, dining, and rooting for their favorite teams at this legendary Pass-a-Grille restaurant and bar. With a waterfront view, nine docks, weekend live music, 17 TVs and an awesome happy hour, this Old Florida resto opened in 1994. Their Oct. 28 Halloween party is as famous as their hand crafted secret Bloody Mary mix. Long time friend and customer Jim Miller bought The Wharf from owners Bill and Diane Rodrigues who owned it for 20 years. Miller loved the vibe and didn’t want it to become condos. Customers were thrilled that The Wharf’s menu, a taste of Cajun and Floribbean fare heavy on seafood, will rock on including the spicy gumbo, peel n’ eat shrimp, weekend shucked oysters, grouper Reuben, jalapeno conch fritters, and coconut shrimp. Says General Manager Stanton Chevalier: “Everyone is welcome, locals, visitors, and families; we even have a kid’s menu. We have good seafood, comfort dishes,

Soups, salads, baskets of boneless wings or fish, alfredo bowls (shrimp, chicken, lobster) and dozens of sandwiches or burgers beckon. The Reubens (grouper, crab, corned beef) and Wharf steak and cheese are fabulous especially with a side of homemade chips with Ranch. Dinner seafood entrees (mahi, shrimp, scallop, grouper, crabcake, salmon, yellowfin tuna) are bestsellers and come with two sides. A full bar and friendly bartenders whip up specialty cocktails and there’s an excellent small wine and beer list. She created an amazing dress for Jenny Bleackley based on one of her beautiful paintings, printing it on linen. “A painting is a rectangle with linear edges, but the body has shoulders, which I needed to construct. I also couldn’t cut a traditional neck opening because that would cut into the design and impede visual flow. From extra fabric I cut out individual flowers and leaves, turned under the edges and used a teeny tiny blanket stitch around the edges, piecing together an entire neckline and yoke/shoulder section. On other printed parts I stitched around the leaf edges to look as if they had been appliqued, so it has a 3-D effect. On some of the flower centers embroidery enhances the 3-D look. A tiny hand-made cloth button fastens at the neck.” Like her on FB: nancyniss.artdesign The Radix Collection debuts their Fall 2023 collection and we can’t get enough

Navigating Property Law and Estate Planning Residential Real Estate Transactions: A Legal Perspective Residential real estate transactions can be exciting yet intricate endeavors, often laden with legal complexities. Amidst the anticipation of finding that dream home or closing a sale, it’s imperative to have a legal expert by your side – enter the real estate attorney. Their role in these transactions is pivotal, serving as the guardians of legality and ensuring a smooth journey for clients. Role of a Real Estate Attorney Real estate attorneys are legal stalwarts, safeguarding the interests of their clients in the labyrinth of property transactions. From the inception of the process to the closing stages, these professionals bring their legal expertise to bear on every aspect. They draft, review, and negotiate contracts, ensuring that all terms are fair, comprehensive, and legally sound. Additionally, they conduct thorough due diligence, examining titles, surveys, and other critical documents to confirm the legitimacy of the transaction.

Common Legal Issues In the realm of residential property transactions, legal issues can emerge like hidden obstacles. Encumbrances on the property title, boundary disputes, or undisclosed property defects are some common challenges. Real estate attorneys act as the first line of defense against such issues. They meticulously investigate the property’s history to identify potential roadblocks and work diligently to resolve any legal hindrances that might impede the transaction. Navigating the Process Navigating a residential real estate transaction can be like sailing uncharted waters. Real estate attorneys are akin to skilled navigators, guiding clients through the turbulent legal waters. They explain the legal jargon, rights, and obligations to clients, empowering them to make informed decisions. Their presence during negotiations and at the closing table provides a sense of security and assurance that all legal aspects are in order. In essence, a real estate attorney acts as a legal compass, guiding clients through the

complex landscape of residential real estate transactions. Their expertise helps avoid potential pitfalls, enabling a seamless process and providing peace of mind to all parties involved. So, when embarking on your real estate journey, consider the invaluable partnership of a qualified real estate attorney to navigate the legal intricacies and protect your interests. FAMILY MATTERS: Representing Yourself in Family Court By Jake Hornstein, OurChildrenHaveRights.org When parents split up, or are not together, and both parents want legal access to their child(ren), child custody arrangements must be determined. A commonly overlooked option while navigating the child custody process is representing yourself, or “Filing Pro Se.” Navigating this process through the court system can be emotional and complicated. Many parents choose to retain an attorney but others decide to file Pro Se or “on one’s behalf.” When performed properly, filing Pro Se can be a powerful tool that could minimize or even eliminate the need for paid legal aid while achieving a successful custody and co-parenting outcome. It’s a major responsibility. Before you decide, ask yourself these questions: Did The Other Parent Hire an Attorney? If yes, they could be in a more advantageous position. Do I Understand How Court Procedures Work? Use your resources… Online resources (OCHR.org), libraries, and your local court clerk. Seek out the court clerk, develop a friendly rapport and level of comfortability for asking questions. Can I Afford to Hire an Attorney? Research the anticipated costs. Contact attorneys in the county of your court case to inquire about fees and estimated costs. What Alternative Options Do I Have? Finances are the main driver behind choosing to file Pro Se. Explore options and resources for Pro Bono legal aid (we can help with this). You may qualify for legal assistance from various agencies depending on your circumstances. Will My Ideal Custody Arrangements Be Too Difficult to Achieve? Consider the custody arrangement that you desire and how that aligns with the best interests of your child. Have a clear understanding of the wishes of the co-parent as well. Am I Familiar with the Required Court Documents? Review sample documents online or at your local courthouse. Determine your comfortability interpreting and completing those documents. Ask the court clerk for help identifying the correct forms, when they are due, and how they should be submitted. OUR CHILDREN HAVE RIGHTS OCHR.org is a Pinellas based nonprofit that serves children by helping their parents navigate their

child custody and co-parenting journeys, at no cost to the family. We’ve built an online Educational Resource Center and offer no cost consultations on an on-going and as needed basis. In September, OCHR.org won the 2023 AMPLIFY Clearwater “Community Spirit Award” Recognizing Business Excellence. The award pays tribute to an organization that although small, makes a big difference in the lives of others and is committed to corporate social responsibility. If you or someone you know needs our assistance, we’re here for you. We’re on a mission to protect the rights of children to have access to both responsible parents by providing education, resources, and support services for successful co-parenting. Email us at JakeHornstein@OurChildrenHaveRights.org or visit www.OCHR.org. To donate, visit www.ourchildrenhaverights.org/donate.

To learn more, email Jake at JakeHornstein@ OurChildrenHaveRights.org or visit OCHR.org. To donate, visit www.ourchildrenhaverights.org/donate. Support of our mission is vital, and we kindly ask our community to consider a small financial contribution to our program. As our organization grows, we will provide more services to parents with a minor child, but we can only accomplish that with the generous support of donors like you. ONE St. Petersburg

St. Petersburg’s downtown skyline has changed dramatically over the past decade with the opening of several major condo towers, including ONE St. Petersburg and Saltaire St. Petersburg. The 4th Street North corridor, already a busy commercial district, has also been abuzz with development activity. But how will these two key parts of the city’s core look in 2024?

Reflection Less than a year from now, downtown St. Pete’s Mirror Lake neighborhood will have a much different vibe thanks to the opening of Reflection, an 18-story condo building that will tower above the surrounding area. Reflection, located at 777 Third Ave. N., will boast 88 residential units along with 2,800 square feet of ground-floor retail and a rooftop “oasis” that boast a resort-style pool, spa, and sauna. Some of the residences will be as large as 2,285 square feet. Cordova Inn This quaint historic hotel, which has just 32 rooms and a cozy café and bar, is getting a total makeover a century after it was first built. Located at 253 2nd Ave. N. in downtown St. Pete, the Cordova Inn is undergoing an ambitious expansion that will nearly triple its size. The owners, New Hotel Collection and TDZ Capital Partners, acquired and razed adjacent properties and are building a five-story addition that will add 65 rooms to the hotel, as well as a first-floor restaurant and rooftop bar. GolfSuites City Club The long-dormant Hofbrauhaus property at 123 4th St. S will finally get a new tenant in summer 2024 when GolfSuites City Club opens in downtown St. Pete. The 17,000-square-foot space will house eight golf simulators that allow you to hit the links almost any time of day or year – no cart needed, and the

Whole Foods After years of “will they or won’t they?” speculation, Whole Foods is coming to St. Pete’s 4th Street North corridor. The specialty grocer is setting up shop at 201 38th Ave. N., the site of a shopping plaza that housed Suncoast Fitness, Dollar General, Sun Country Cleaners, and a drive-through Kahwa Coffee café. The intersection of 4th Street North and 38th Avenue North is already home to two Publix supermarkets, so Whole Foods will face stiff competition from the get-go.

400 Central

400 Central We’d be remiss not to mention this massive, 46-story mixed-use project under construction in the heart of downtown St. Pete, where – for those of you who remember – the old “cheese grater” buildings used to stand. While it won’t officially open until 2025, 400 Central is already changing the look and feel of an entire city block. With 40,000 square feet of Class A office space and 25,000 square feet of ground floor retail space, 400 Central will be a destination even for people who don’t live in one of the building’s 301 residences.

The Nolen This 23-story condo tower will be located at 126 4th Ave. NE, offering residents an easy stroll to the St. Pete Pier and views of Straub Park and the North Yacht Basin. Slated to open in 2024, The Nolen will soar to 388 feet but offer only 31 residences. Its ground floor will have 1,260 square feet of retail space.

275 5th St. S. Focus, a Chicago-based developer, has received approval for a 24-story, yet-to-be-named, mixed-use project at 275 5th St. S, just two blocks south of Central Avenue, in downtown St. Petersburg. The building will include 367 luxury apartments, 6,000 feet of commercial space, and a 369-space parking garage. Focus, in a news release, says construction will commence in the first quarter of 2024, with a goal of opening the building to residential and commercial tenants in early 2026.

HERBALICIOUS The Herbal Apothecary on Park Blvd. in Seminole tantalizes with potions, lotions, teas, candles, green tea and rose creams, lip butters, essential oils, sugar body scrubs, loofahs and soaps. Every month, they conduct classes in a lovely room that doubles as a haven for the stressed. You can learn about botanical printmaking, mindfulness and soap making at the in-store workshops. Their deep stress relief tea is just in time for the busy holiday season and includes a calming herbal blend of nervine adaptogenic herbs (passionflower, skullcap, lemon balm, lavender, and chamomile). One whiff of their Doterra lavender essential oil calms the spirit and the oil’s linalool soothes the GI tract, eases intestinal spasms, and prompts digestive enzyme release. The store celebrates one year in December. They are part of the outdoor market with vendors, free yoga 10-11am and live music noon-2pm in the parking lot (Market @ Crossroads). Get there early and grab breakfast in the same location at Clear Sky on Park @8am. DRINK WISELY Are women who drink sugar-sweetened beverages every day at greater risk of developing liver cancer and chronic liver disease? Yes, says a new study published in JAMA Network Open. The study looked at nearly 100,000 postmenopausal women who participated in the Women’s Health Initiative. Women in the study reported their daily soft drink and fruit drink consumption, not including fruit juice. After three years they also reported artificially sweetened drink consumption. They were followed for a median of more than two decades. Researchers looked at self-reported liver cancer incidence and death due to chronic liver disease, including fibrosis, cirrhosis, or chronic hepatitis. Results showed that 6.8% of women who participated in the study drank one or more sugar-sweetened beverages every day. Of those women, 85% had a higher risk of liver cancer and a 68% higher risk of dying from chronic liver disease compared with those who had fewer than three sugar-sweetened beverages per month. “One of the sugars that’s present is fructose, and that can be stored as fat in the liver,” said Dr. Gina DeNicola, interim chair of the Department of Metabolism and Physiology at Moffit Cancer Center. “That fat can cause a lot of inflammation and damage to the liver, which can lead to the risk of cancer formation.” Gut microbiome can also play a role in potentially developing liver disease. The bacteria in the gut can process that sugar, which makes the building blocks for fat. While this process doesn’t start in the liver, it can have an influence on the entire body, including liver function.

Pain Relief on the Move “At Achieve Acupuncture and Integrative Medicine, Dr. Gibbons and Dr. Nino both specialize in treating chronic pain and complicated conditions by seamlessly blending acupuncture with modern medical solutions like ATP Resonance BioTherapy™.

You’ve tried prescription painkillers with no relief. You’ve agreed to the invasive surgery only for it to fail. You’ve even tried cutting edge therapies including infrared light and hydrotherapy. And you’re still in pain. “I had knee surgery over a year ago and I was still suffering from residual pain,” shares Preston B. “I complained to my surgeon and my family doctor, and they just kept writing me prescriptions for tramadol and hydrocodone. Sure, they took the pain away, but it was just a band-aid, a band-aid that made me sleepy and dizzy and irritable. I wanted to get back to boating with my wife, not spend the rest of my life asleep in the recliner.” It wasn’t until Preston discovered acupuncture that he had found a real solution. Acupuncture has been used for thousands of years to treat a myriad of conditions and according to the National Institute of Health (NIH) works particularly well in treating chronic pain. “I was seeing an acupuncturist in New Jersey when my wife told me she wanted to move to St. Pete Beach. Spending the rest of our days actually enjoying our boat more than 3 months a year really excited me, but I was concerned about finding an experienced acupuncturist to keep up with my progress.”

“[My acupuncturist] referred me to Dr. Gibbons and I started treatment less than a week after we settled into our new home. My care went uninterrupted and that to me is just amazing. Just yesterday we had the boat out and I was able to jump off for a swim and then climb back on without pain. It’s just incredible. “I don’t think it’s a secret that acupuncture doesn’t work like a Tylenol. It takes repeated and consistent treatments to help our patients achieve the pain free life they’re looking for. In some cases, Dr. Gibbons recommends 3 to 5 months of comprehensive care and committing yourself to that can sometimes feel overwhelming; a number of our patients only live on the Tampa Bay Area part-time. Our referral network provides continuity of care while you continue to live your life!” You no longer need to suffer! Dr. Gibbons and her team specialize in treating chronic pain, complicated neurological conditions, infertility, and autoimmune diseases. Call 727-272-3587 and a Care Coordinator would be happy to schedule your consultation to determine if you are a candidate for their treatments. Or you can learn more at WWW.ACHIEVEACUIM.COM

In a wonderful twist of fate, Preston discovered that his acupuncturist in New Jersey actually knew Dr. Gibbons from a seminar they both attended on treating chronic pain.

Fortunate Finds An English woman paid $100 for a 12-inch sculpture at a flea market. She took it to the BBC’s Fake or Fortune (the British version of Antiques Roadshow) and it turned out to be an Elisabeth Frink “Small Warrior,” one of a series of 10, worth $72,000. The St. Pete Museum of Fine Arts recently discovered its own fortunate find. In 1969, the MFA was gifted a pastel portrait long believed to be by noted British painter Francis Cotes. This attribution, which remained unchallenged for over 50 years, is incorrect. The artist is almost certainly Katherine Reed, another equally important, though historically less well-known, artist.

In an interview in Weekly Challenger, Weaver describes her cultural art painting parties. “Uniquely Original Art Studio is a place where your creative expression can be put on canvas, expressed through spoken words, or felt by the rhythm of the African drum during one of our drum circles,” she shared. “We are a cultural art studio in the heart of the African American community.” Follow her on www.facebook.com/originalartbycatherine.

MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS On 11/9 @6pm the MFA hosts an Artist Talk with Jose Alvarez (D.O.P.A.). Globally renowned and celebrated for his exquisitely crafted lush and brilliant works, Jose Alvarez (D.O.P.A.) brings an extraordinary life story to a rich and compelling body of work in a variety of media. Born Deyvi Orangel Peña Arteaga, using his moniker Jose Alvarez (D.O.P.A.), creates paintings/collages on mica, videos, installations, and performances, through which he breaks down belief systems into intersecting components of science, spirituality, and mysticism. In 1987, artist Jose Alvarez (D.O.P.A) fled Venezuela to escape persecution. Twenty-five years later, Alvarez was charged with identity theft and falsifying a passport and was detained at Krome Detention Center in Miami for two months in 2012. During this time, he created a series of portraits of his fellow detainees using ballpoint pens and whatever paper he could find. From its remarkably arduous and modest beginnings, his art has matured into a thriving creative practice, gaining acknowledgment from significant institutions worldwide. 42

BOOK NOOK

This holiday season, why not make your gift-giving extra special with a book by a talented local author? Start by shopping independent bookstores like Tombolo Books, Book + Bottle, Oxford Exchange, Pieces of A Dream, Back in the Day, Books on the Beach and the new bookstore opening on Corey Avenue. For comic books, Emerald City and Wilson’s Book Store are a trip, and museums such as The Dali proffer an eclectic collection. You can shop for gifts and meet a former local author at Tombolo Books when award winning journalist Anne Hull talks about her new book set in the South’s racist ‘60s, Through the Groves, with Colette Bancroft, Tampa Bay Times’ Book Critic. Pick up Paul Wilborn’s Florida Hustle, Tom Gribbin’s The Last Florida Boy, Roy Peter Clark’s Tell It Like It Is: A Guide to Clear and Honest Writing, Gary Mormino’s Dreams in the

New Century: Instant Cities, Shattered Hopes and Florida’s Turning Point, L. L. Kirchner’s Blissful Thinking, Craig Pittman’s The State You’re in: Florida Men, Florida Women, and Other Wildlife, Bill DeYoung’s Vintage St. Pete & Pinellas Vol. 3, and Carol J. Perry’s Now You See It. Tara Lush’s Gator Queen is a hoot! Lush’s cozy mysteries are fan faves. Here, Maggie Andrews returns to her Florida hometown to uphold her father’s gator-trapping legacy, while her sister Vera pursues her dream of opening a bookstore. Trouble ensues when a rival gator trapper is murdered, making Vera the prime suspect. With the bookstore’s opening looming, they must catch the real killer and restore their family’s reputation. Dr. Thomas Hallock delves into cultivating contentment through poetry and prose in Happy Neighborhood.

He explores how individuals, especially men, reconcile their pasts to find happiness at home. These meditations blend daily life in St. Petersburg with personal, literary and cultural reflections on diverse topics (infidelity, fatherhood). Jennifer McMahon’s My Darling Girl is a chilling Christmas tale. Alison reluctantly welcomes her dying, estranged, and abusive mother, Mavis, into her Vermont home. As eerie occurrences unfurl, Alison suspects a sinister presence in her family, testing her resolve to shield her loved ones. Andrea Rinard’s Murmurations serves up 26 short stories featuring diverse women navigating the complexities of everyday life. Her stark, surreal, and heartfelt tales distill the essence of human experiences, offering moments both familiar and profound.

The Hotel Jacaranda

Gaylord Palms

HISTORIC HOTELS During the holidays, Orlando’s Gaylord Palms is Christmas central. Closer to home, we have beautiful historic hotels with holiday flair and special menus including the Don CeSar, the spectacular newly relaunched Vinoy Resort (Lottie’s desserts!), Hollander Hotel and Fenway Hotel. One of my favorites is Avon Park’s “gracious lady,” The Hotel Jacaranda. It is listed on the National Historic Register and the epitome of Southern repose, visited by Babe Ruth, Clark Gable, and other celebrities. Today, the hotel radiates unequaled elegance with comfortable, spacious guestrooms, a sprawling veranda, complimentary breakfast, a Sunday grand buffet and lunch/dinner served Tues.-Fri. in the restaurant. It’s a perfect spot to refresh after a visit to nearby Bok Sanctuary and other Orlando attractions.

PET HEALTH

By Dr. Johnathan Pierce

producing anything. Even trying to make the pet vomit with a full belly raises the possibility of aspirating into the lungs, causing pneumonia.

Have a Happy Holiday! Most of us are wary pet owners that know the various foods that are toxic to our pets. Onions, grapes, garlic, sugar-free xylitol-containing foods, etc. But what about other foods, maybe in excess. The holidays bring celebration too. This can be very tempting for your pet. As veterinarians, we see a variety of food related illness other than toxin related illness. Dogs have eaten whole holiday hams causing obstructions and food bloat. That’s right, when opportunity knocks your pet may not be able to help him or herself. This could be a surgical condition, especially if the pet is vomiting and not

Dough is another tempting treat for pets. Unfortunately, a small amount of rising dough can cause major issues. The dough may continue to rise in the stomach causing distention of the stomach which can lead to bloat and possible stomach torsion or GDV. The fermentation process creates carbon dioxide and alcohol which can cause disorientation and even alcohol poisoning. Chicken, ham, and beef bones are highly tempting and while digestible, large fragments or large quantities of bone can cause vomiting, compromise the lining of the stomach and intestine causing bleeding or even perforation of the organs depending on the sharpness of the pieces.

The bottom line is to be aware of what your pet has access to, where you are storing or leavening foods, and thawing your meats and frozen food. Pushing your food away from the edge of the counter may not be enough. Consider placing room temperature goods in your microwave or oven if not otherwise in use. Happy Holidays everyone and as always if your pet experiences any issues then please contact your veterinarian. Island Life Animal Hospital Dr. Danielle Gallo & Dr. Johnathan Pierce 5901 Sun Blvd., Suite 107 Saint Petersburg, FL 33715 727-289-3776 • islandlifeanimalhospital.vet

Ingestion of fatty foods or foods that your pet is not used to can lead to upset stomach, diarrhea, vomiting, etc. More severe consequences can be pancreatitis which can be very painful and in rare cases can even be fatal.

HOLIDAY HOME Deck the halls with local art and ornaments this season from local stores and Shopapalooza 11/25-26 10am-5pm. Madeira Beach has a cute city boutique with historical photos on the walls, festive t-shirts, and dozens of local artist-made ornaments with a beachy feel. Sign of the Dolphin, The Emporium and Corey Avenue boutiques feature ornament collections and décor big on nautical, beach vibe, mermaids, shells, and whimsy. The St. Petersburg Chamber of Commerce’s City Store at 100 2nd Ave. N celebrates its 8th birthday in November and showcases wares from local artists including ornaments from Allan Gutcher, Beach Puddles, Mungo Key’s tropical collection and Seaglass Ornaments. They started with 21 artists and now they feature 107 local talents. Stop by the shops at The Imagine Museum, Museum of Fine Arts, Museum of American Arts & Crafts and The Dali for one-of-a-kind holiday décor. For Hanukkah, Kwaanza and Christmas, downtown St. Pete’s Shapiro Gallery is the spot for artistic décor, gifts for the home and jewelry. Shop local and spread cheer by

visiting artists’ galleries for décor and gifts such as Duncan McClellan Gallery. Holidays are more than just a Christmas tree, pine, fir garlands and poinsettias. There are so many ways to transform your holiday home with winter greenery. Perhaps a garland of pothos plants on your mantel with simple candlesticks, hung with matching white and green stockings you’ve personalized with names and cross-stitched or felt cut-out plants. If space is tight, why not create a Charlie Brown-inspired tree out of a small houseplant and trimmed with tiny light strings and ornaments? Place your plants in a Santa or Hanukkah mug, holiday bowls or containers you find at the dollar stores or thrift shops. Recycle your ugly holiday sweater and hot glue it to a pot for a touch of whimsy. Next, pick a holiday theme. Are you going Barbie, fairy pastel, blue ocean hues, farmhouse or classic with bright red and gold décor on your tree or room? Modern alternatives feature bright blue or blush pink ornaments against a flocked or white Christmas tree or a fully neutral or monochromatic palette against darker greenery. This year’s Pantone Color Viva Magenta works well with a mixture a metallics, gold, champagne and bronze combined with neutrals, royal blues, and forest greens. Create a holiday tableau that matches your passion. Do you collect wind-up toys, nutcrackers, or teddy bears? Dress them up and display creatively on your mantel and for your precious shells, spray paint them and create wreaths. ParadiseNewsFL.com | NOVEMBER 2023

ENCOURAGING WORDS

By Dr. Dennis Merritt Jones

Old Age Doesn’t Have to Be a Slow March Into Enemy Territory

This month marks my 74th sojourn around the sun and the only thing I can say is the journey has gone by more quickly than I was prepared for. Can you relate? I’ve concluded that growing old(er) with grace, ease, and acceptance is a large part of the lesson we’ve come to the earth school to learn; too many of us are dragged into our elderhood kicking and screaming. Perhaps we need to see the aging process as a badge of honor rather than a punishment. What I know is that we can run from that lesson (and lord knows many of us try), but we can’t hide because the body we live in goes wherever we do. The physical garment that we’ve been gifted with appears to be the primary learning-laboratory in which we experience that lesson in a multitude of ways. The first layer of learning is about transcending our

where I don’t need or want it and less on my top of my head where I do need and want it seems like minutiae compared to the rest of the aging dilemma. Whenever I think about this, I wonder what kind of sense of humor God must have. Without fail, about this point in my lamenting, my higher Self pops in and says, “Hey, it beats the alternative, right?” Yup, it does; indeed, Any day above ground is a good day.

FIREFLY

Have you ever caught yourself looking into the mirror and been startled by the image of the “old person” staring back at you? Ya, me too. Perspective matters. Irrespective of our age, most of us don’t feel as old as the person we see gazing back at us in the mirror. It was disconcerting for me when recently I spoke to one of my high school classmates on FaceTime. All I could see was an “old” man – clearly much older than me; I felt like I was talking to my grandpa. I thought (hopefully not out loud) OMG, what happened – he looks ancient. When we finished our call, I took one look in the mirror and saw precisely what had happened; it’s called the vicissitudes of living in a human skin for over seven decades, LOL!

“I will never be an old man. To me, old age is always 15 years older than I am.” ~ Francis Bacon attachments to the way things once were. Impermanence is a fact of life. Change is inevitable and we need to honor it rather than resist it. To push back against change is not only fruitless, it’s painful. A few months ago, I hired a trainer at my gym to help me deal with the changes my 74-year-old body is going through. When I leave our training sessions, I realize this skinsuit I wear doesn’t fit comfortably as it once did. It isn’t as strong, fixable, flexible, fit, fast, or pleasing to the eye as it once was. I am learning I have muscles I never knew I had, and they ache in ways I don’t fancy. Relatively speaking, the fact that I now have more hair growing out of my body in places

Change happens, and it’s not always painless, but it still trumps not having a body to complain about. When discussing this topic recently with my older brother, his retort was, “Old age is like a slow march into enemy territory – no one comes back alive.” Growing old is not for the faint of heart or sissies; it requires courage to face the fact that we are all on a one-way trip to the great “next yet to be.” This is when our perspective matters. The garment of flesh and bones we see gazing back at us in the mirror isn’t the whole story. Balancing the awareness of our spiritual nature with the temporal fragility of the human condition is the practice of a lifetime. Our physical body is merely the delivery device that allows our soul to touch the earth; what it looks like now and how it functions is secondary to the fact that we’ve been blessed with the privilege of using it for as long as we have. With this awareness, we can look into the rearview mirror and smile with a grateful heart, knowing old age is not a slow march into enemy territory; it’s a necessary glide path to the next great “yet to be” and that is a beautiful thing. Perspective matters.
