Volume 27 Number 10 • December 2021 PUBLISHERS Peter Roos | Marketing & Sales sales@paradisenewsfl.com Renee Roos | Creative Director info@paradisenewsfl.com

Publishing Paradise NEWS for more than a quarter century has been very personally rewarding. It allowed us to gather a wealth of information about enjoying life here in Paradise. We love to share the essentials for a quality life: art, music, great food, quality healthcare and a little place to call your own, as close to the beach as can be afforded.

EDITORIAL Nanette Wiser - Executive Editor wiser86@gmail.com Steve Traiman - Feature Editor traimancreativecopy@gmail.com

We publish 10 times a year, monthly from October to May and twice in the summer, June/July and August/September. Our news online, www.ParadiseNewsFl.com, has a wealth of information, including back issue archives more than a decade deep. Weekly on Thursdays, we distribute a digital newsletter with our top picks of things to do each weekend. We see a direct effect each Thursday night and Friday morning as people click through to our website for more information, including a glimpse at their astrology. Our astrologer for almost 20 years, Sarah Lyons, is the best we have ever known.

ART & PRODUCTION DIRECTOR Janet Nummi ADVERTISING REPS Gigi Grimshaw Linda Motzenbecker

We do not spend a lot of time, effort or expense selling subscriptions. Yet, anyone who prefers to have a quality printed magazine can purchase online for a discounted $22.50/year. If you prefer digital reading, each issue is online for free around the first of each month.

CONTRIBUTING COLUMNISTS Arts & Leisure & Events - Buddy Baker Art News - Caron Schwartz CONTRIBUTING WRITERS Dr. Dennis Merritt Jones | Sarah Lyons Michael Moses Jr. | Tom Broderson, ESQ Ryan Baker, MD | Dr. Jonathan Pierce Coast Brothers

Each issue covers about six weeks of time from the beginning of each month to the middle of the next month, when the next issue arrives in 20,000-25,000 high end waterfront mailboxes. We designed our publishing business as a remote business model when we started 27 years ago. While COVID devastated some of our clients’ businesses, others were fine, and they all needed our help more than ever. While everyone is anxious to get “back to normal,” many specialists are predicting that our experiences over the past two years have taught us lessons we will not soon forget. “The new normal” may be with us for quite a while as the lessons learned adjust our behaviors long term. My mother’s father was one of my most successful ancestors, who lived through most of the 20th century. He told me when he was in his eighties that he had seen many amazing things come to pass in his lifetime and he was convinced that the pace of change and innovation would continue to accelerate. He was right, as was George Benson when he sang “Nothing Stays The Same.” As we move into 2022, be patient with your loved ones, coworkers, and neighbors. You may not know what they are dealing with. For over a year now, we have closed each Paradise NEWS issue with Encouraging Words by Dr. Dennis Merritt Jones, right after the Astrology column. I have seen people read their Paradise NEWS from the back to read those columns first.

This month we have two great feature stories. Our longtime feature writer, Steve Traiman, got an exclusive interview with St. Petersburg’s next mayor, Ken Welch. Our cover story is about an historic preservation issue in Pass-a-Grille. In between you will find great advice on health, wealth, dining, the arts, markets, and entertainment. If you call on any of our advertisers, please let them know you read about them in Paradise NEWS. Thanks for being a loyal reader. Have a great holiday and a terrific start to 2022.

TIDBITS ST. PETE BEACH_____________________ St. Pete Beach Infrastructure work progresses. Undergrounding of utilities continues south on Gulf Blvd. from 65th Ave. to 55th, then on toward 35th. Most of the work is being done with horizontal drilling from the edge of the road to minimize traffic interruption. Repairs have been ongoing on the sewer system, and the city has added more pressurized force mains, as much of the system is gravity fed. That’s Phase I, which started in Oct. 2020. This phase will be complete in January 2022, several months ahead of schedule. The state grant is going towards Phase II – a pump station on the north end of the island. “It’s where we collect everything from the island and pump it under the Intracoastal to St. Petersburg,” said Al Johnson. “They treat it at the Northwest Treatment Plant.” The City was recently granted $2 million in state of Florida matching funds for Phase Two, the $4-

By Peter Roos million final step in the repair and upgrade of the city’s sewer system to handle the growth allowed by the city’s comprehensive plan. The city is matching the state grant and has accelerated the plan by as much as a year with the state money. “Lining of the sewer pipes throughout the city is paying dividends already,” according to city manager Alex Rey. “The flow we are paying the city of St. Petersburg to treat has declined by 10% since prior years. Keeping rainwater out is saving us serious money.” RumFish Grill! Through December 31st, 2021, when you buy a $100 RumFish Grill Gift Card you will receive a $20 Bonus Card! They are seeking to provide a treatment center in the growing healthcare area in downtown St. Petersburg. Rays Split Season Plan Gains Traction We used to think that poor attendance at Ray’s games was due to their propensity to lose. They debunked that theory by winning the World Series, while poor attendance persists. The Rays have been floating the idea of playing in Montreal during the hottest half of the season. Even John Romano, sports editor for the Tampa Bay Times, who was once dead set against the notion, was recently quoted saying “It’s time to seriously consider the idea.” Condo Construction Recap “There’s been a ton of pent-up demand for condo products in downtown St. Petersburg,” said David Moyer, director of sales at Smith & Associates Real Estate. “It is a seasoned, mature condominium downtown market with waterfront views and an urban neighborhood,” he said. The $50 million project by Tampa-based DDA Development in partnership with Backstreets Capital began presales in November. Construction is expected to be complete by 2023, with condos starting at $1.2 million. The unique aspect of this development lies in its focus on privacy. Each residence is designed without shared walls. Floors five through 15 have two units per floor, and floors 16 to 23 will have one unit per floor. St. Petersburg College St. Petersburg College added more than $1 billion in income to the Pinellas County economy last year, according to a new report. A study done by labor market company Emsi shows SPC added $1.2 billion to the Pinellas County economy in fiscal year 2019 to 2020, which is 1.3% of the county’s total gross regional product. Veterans Seek $75,000 for Florida Medal of Honor Memorial in St. Pete Beach The Veterans of South Pinellas County (VSPC) is a meaningful group that most recently was the sponsor of the Veteran’s Celebration and St. Pete Beach Chowder Challenge on Nov. 7. The VSPC currently gives seven college scholarship-grants to returning veterans and many other things on behalf of veterans. The VSPC is now working to complete the Florida Medal of Honor Recipient’s Memorial. The Medal of Honor is the nation’s highest and most prestigious military decoration, which is awarded to U.S. military members who distinguish themselves by acts of valor. Of 30 Medal of Honor recipients in Florida from the Civil War to the present, 25 have passed. One of those honorees, retired U.S. Army Command Sgt. Major Gary Littrell, lives in St. Pete Beach and is a member of The Veterans of South Pinellas County (VSPC). The other living recipients and their hometowns are:

Wayne MacDowell, author of “Not Just Another War Story” and board member of the VSPC, is currently serving as chair for the Memorial project. “In speaking with Harry, about $75,000 needs to be raised to make the monument a reality. Either a grant or private funding is needed to get this project completed. PROPERTY LAW

Travels through Property Law by Tom Brodersen, Esq.

The Simple Life It is not irrational to long for a time when life was simpler than it is today, and fewer things seemed destined to go wrong. Perhaps life was like that, when more people were “straight shooters” and believed in fair play, and many peoples’ affairs played out in much smaller communities than is the case today.

have had to pay additional thousands of dollars for documentary stamps (also usually a seller cost). There was no indication that the buyer got any benefit for absorbing all of those costs. Plus, the buyer had four days to get title insurance (which usually takes a couple of weeks, often more), and 20 days to close.

Sadly, however, much has changed, and our lives are genuinely more complicated than they were. For example, real estate transactions seem almost as complicated now as major corporate business used to be. The basic contract for buying and selling residential property is 12 pages long, with many different subjects covered, and contingencies for financing, title, pests and condition of the property, among others. There are also many addenda and riders to cover other complications.

Almost needless to say, something came up, and the buyer had to back out. Given the wording of the contract, there wasn’t any realistic chance of getting his earnest money back. For all we know, it might have been even worse had he gone forward and closed, only to find out after closing that there were more issues with the property that were not addressed by the contract.

That, of course, does not mean everyone ever reads (or understands) all that boilerplate language. Some, even, don’t even bother with it! I recently spoke to a person who put over $5,000 down as an earnest money deposit

to buy a piece of real estate he wanted. The contract was one and a quarter page long! It addressed the earnest money deposit only to the extent to point out that it was non-refundable. It didn’t even consider that there may be situations in which the buyer may be entitled get his money back. In addition, the buyer was required to procure and pay for his own title insurance (along with all other closing costs). Title insurance is almost always the seller’s responsibility, at least here in Pinellas County. The buyer would also

Mayor Rick Kriseman congratulates new Mayor-elect on election night

Ken Welch was very active on the campaign trail

St. Pete Mayor-Elect KEN WELCH L o o k s A h e a d t o a G re a t e r C i t y Story by STEVE TRAIMAN Photos courtesy of kenwelch.com

Former Pinellas County Commissioner and current Council

member Ken Welch won 60% of the vote to beat Council member and local businessman Robert Blackmon Nov. 2 to become St. Pete’s first African-American mayor. At his watch party, he told supporters,“This election has made history in St. Petersburg!” Just after the Nov. 2 election, Mayor Rick Kriseman told Paradise NEWS, “St. Pete spoke loudly on Tuesday night in wanting to keep moving forward and making progress. I couldn’t be happier for my friend Ken and our newest Council stars, Copley Gerdes, Lisset Hanewicz, and Richie Floyd. History has been made. Now let’s make good on our promises – on the Trop site, housing affordability, sustainability, and resilience, and ensuring the sun does shine bright on all who come to live, work, and play. We’re getting closer, St. Pete.” In an exclusive interview with Paradise NEWS, the Mayor-elect noted his key goals and priorities for the city, its residents, businesses and visitors looking ahead: “During the campaign, 14

floating to the top were housing affordability across the board – from employers, parents, and low-income residents; then our infrastructure and our environmental protections – sewer and water improvements that keep up with our growth; and our neighborhoods’ health and safety.” He then detailed his approach to key issues, starting with future redevelopment of the Tropicana Field site. He said, “As a third-generation resident growing up in this neighborhood, I Iived through two major displacements – the first when the interstate was built, then when baseball arrived with a new domed stadium. “We will want to make sure that those promises from 30 years ago come true and hope the Rays will be part of that. Jobs and other economic opportunities are key and Mayor Kriseman has made a good start with his RFP [Request for Proposals] to potential developers. We’ve had some good response in those RFPs. I will be restarting those conversions with the Rays, our City Council and County Commission, and the entire community for their input as we move forward.” For affordable housing needs, he said,“As a County Commission, we established a key Housing Trust Fund that has over

We also will be looking at ways to expedite processes and procedures for developers, including necessary zoning changes to speed up multi-unit projects like duplexes, triplexes and small condos, forming necessary partnerships as well.” Flood area protection is also a key concern. Welch said,“This is a big part of the Kriseman administration’s Integrated Water Resources Master Plan. It is a multiyear approach to fix old pipes, reclaimed and wastewater systems, to handle continuing growth. It’s very important to upgrade the old pipes and systems that caused the massive sewage overflows into the bay in recent years. The just-passed federal infrastructure bill will bring in some of those dollars to lower our costs. “Integrating sea level rise into our plans is fundamental and will change the ways to allow growth to happen and to deal with tidal flooding like Miami is doing now. We can adapt by applying the science and integrating that into our growth and infrastructure – as we know the coast of Pinellas County will be very different in next few decades.” Asked about his efforts to meet the key goals of StPete2050, to which the public has been very favorable, he said: “It’s a good visioning process and I participated in the first public meeting and joined future virtual meetings. The goals are pretty consistent with affordable housing and our vital neighborhoods, which are very close to our priorities. We hope to integrate StPete2050 goals as they align well with our priorities from the campaign trail”

“Tonight’s election victory confirms the desire of the people of St. Petersburg for leadership that will Mayor-elect talks to media on election night move us forward, not backward. That’s the definition of progress. Assuring that today is better than yesterday and tomorrow is better than today. And that’s what the people have clearly stated that they want, in this election! “The people said that progress means affordability for the people who call St. Petersburg home. It means affordable rent and home ownership, affordable water bills, transportation options and taxes. “The people said that progress means safe and healthy neighborhoods – where every child sees opportunity and hope, and health, education and nutrition disparities are addressed as priorities. “The people say that progress means smart growth that protects our environment, invests in our infrastructure and preserves St. Pete’s character. “And the people agree with my firmly held belief that facts matter. As our founding father John Adams said,“Facts are stubborn things.” “Some issues, like our changing climate and sea level rise, are particularly pressing issues in our city, and affect everything from housing affordability and growth management to transportation. “This election has made history in St. Petersburg, and it is my distinct honor to be the first African-American mayor of my hometown. But let me be clear in stating that ‘making history,’ in and of itself, has never been the priority of this campaign nor will it be the focus of my administration.

The Mayor-elect emphasized,“I’m excited about the opportunities and challenges ahead. As a third-generation resident, I’ve seen St. Pete change to become a great city and I’m looking forward to making it even better with the help of our residents, businesses and visitors!”

“One of my guiding principles of governance (available at www.Kenwelch.com) is community impact, inclusive progress that improves the lives or our residents, the resiliency of our community and links every person with the opportunity to become their best and authentic self – that is inclusive progress and that will be the focus of my administration.

[Editor’s Note: Special thanks to St. Pete Mayor-elect Ken Welch and Preston Rudie, Global Communications Group, for their excellent input and photos.]

“For me, ‘making history’ without making a positive impact is an empty achievement. So, our election victory must be followed by a purposeful agenda of opportunity, accountability and intentional equity for our entire community, and working in partnership with you, and every person and organization who will join our partnership for progress – we will build impactful, inclusive progress for St. Petersburg. Let’s get to work!”

Preserving History

In Pass-A-Grille by Peter Roos

The road narrows when you go south of the

treasured Don Cesar Hotel. Drivers pass the “Welcome to Pass-A-Grille” sign often without noticing “Homesteaded 1886,” focusing instead on the promenade of Washingtonian palms and the many homes, some reminiscent of an era when egos stopped, and simple life luxuries were born. In Pass-A-Grille, your neighbor might be a commercial fisherman, or a federal judge, and you can’t tell the difference when greeting them while on a walk along the shore.  It’s an eclectic demographic that can never truly be duplicated, a social diversification that most communities strive for but could never accomplish, a commonality of people who... share a love of nature and history.

The signage that identifies the Pass-A-Grille

Historic District can be easily missed by day trippers. Many locals take it all for granted, not realizing the history of this island, what it looked like 100 years ago or what it will take to keep it recognizable 100 years from now.  What exactly makes this unique piece of paradise special is as complex as deciding who you might ask.  Some see it as a treasured entity that needs to be left alone, to let it evolve organically. Unfortunately, that leaves this place hopelessly vulnerable to the Coastal High Hazard Building Code, FEMA and ever-escalating land values.  Makes one wonder what the future holds for such an iconic community and how to best preserve and protect the elements that make it so endearing to all who live in and visit this little outlier community.   People come to this area, love the small-scale historic properties, the laid-back atmosphere and decide to buy their slice of paradise.  Some quickly realize the darling bungalows that make it so special do not 16

provide the live-ability that couples with the lifestyle they desire. They often reluctantly choose to knock down and build the FEMA compliant structures that are so encouraged by the Florida Building Code and by insurance regulations and requirements.  Pass-A-Grille needs to decide how to best navigate those tremendous obstacles. It’s been said that 100 years ago, people built homes they could afford to lose because they were uninsurable.  Many of the old hotels burned down and can only be enjoyed now through photographic archives on weekend mornings at the volunteer-operated Gulf Beaches Historic Museum on 10th Ave. Now, through a fundraising effort for the museum, a 2022 Calendar can be picked up at some of the charming shops and restaurants in the Eighth Ave. business district.  The calendar is the newest historical publication in Pass-A-Grille. An exciting new project slated in Pass-A-Grille is a proposal to build a boutique hotel on Eighth Ave. at Pass-A-Grille Way. The original Holloway 64-room hotel with 16 bathrooms and grand lobby was a  welcome destination to those who visited the area for fishing and beach bathing in that era.

Unfortunately, it burned down in 1922.  When the property where it sat became available, it wasn’t hard to imagine a rebirth of this iconic property.  The new Holloway is being built to 85% of the possible density and its form follows the Historic Preservation Board guidelines and the city’s zoning to the letter. When longtime resident Maryann Ferenc found out it was going on the market, she wanted to be involved.  Maryann is best known throughout the region as a prominent figure in Tampa Bay hospitality and  leadership circles. She has been honored as Tampa Bay Beach’s Chamber of Commerce “Tourist Person of the Year” and has served as chairperson of Visit Florida. Maryann has an emotional and physical connectivity to Pass-A-Grille, having lived in the historic district in an authentic 1910 Bungalow for the last 20 years.  Her vision, her love of Pass-A-Grille and her innate understanding of the issues in the area, make her a great fit for bringing the Holloway back to life at the location in which it sat 100 years ago.  The new Holloway is slated to be a Forbes 5-Star Boutique Resort, with only 27 rooms, less than what’s allowable. The plans also include onsite parking to accommodate guests and staff.  Onsite parking is not required under the zoning requirements in place, but the developers are conscious of the parking challenges in the popular beach destination,

especially on weekends. The Holloway will be a tribute to Historic Pass-A-Grille and will also ensure a long-term sustainability and viability to the brickand-mortar businesses that make up “the shortest main street in America, flanked by water.” Detailed plans for the resort were filed with FEMA on August 20, 2021, and are also available online. Google “Holloway Hotel Pass-a-Grille” and enjoy. Thanks to Smith & Associates Realtor Melinda Pletcher for the inspiration and her vast contributions to making this story and future ones on the subject possible.

This site plan for the proposed Holloway Hotel’s ground floor is shown below. The yellow outlines show the footprint of the original Holloway and its outbuildings on the site. The pink outlines are the footprints of two homes that were also on the site at the time.

LIVE PAIN FREE “She saved my life,” says Jean P., a Tampa Bay area resident suffering from the painful side effects of peripheral neuropathy. “My feet and legs were extremely painful, and my doctor told me there was nothing they could do and that I would have to take gabapentin for the rest of my life.” Then she met St. Petersburg’s Dr. Rebecca Gibbons, AP, D.O.M., RN who offers non-drug, non-surgical options for those who have chronic pain and complex chronic conditions. As an RN for over 15 years, Dr. Gibbons integrates her Western medicine training with effective Eastern medicine strategies to help people suffering from chronic pain, especially those who have been diagnosed as “hopeless” or “untreatable.” Peripheral neuropathy is the pain, discomfort and numbness caused by nerve damage of the peripheral nervous system. Jean explained that daily tasks like opening doors and using the bathroom were overwhelmingly painful. “How can you live for the next 30 years when you don’t even want to get out of bed to do simple things?”

Our Services: • Acupuncture • Dry Needling • Acupuncture Injection Point Therapy • O3 Regenerative Therapy™ • ATP Resonance BioTherapy™ • No Tox Botox: Acupuncture Facelift

She was experiencing the burning, numbness, tingling and sharp pains that those suffering with neuropathy often describe. “The way that I would describe it, is that it’s equivalent to walking on glass.” Jean hadn’t worn socks in five years and was wearing shoes two sizes too big so that nothing would “touch her feet.” Unfortunately, Jean’s story is familiar to more than 3 million Americans suffering from peripheral neuropathy. Are you experiencing the same disheartening prognosis, and don’t know where to turn for treatment and relief?

• Lack of sleep at night because of the burning in your feet? • Difficulty walking, shopping, or doing any activity for more than 30 minutes because of the pain? • Struggling with balance and living in fear that you might fall? • Has your doctor told you to “just live with the pain” and you’re taking medications that aren’t working or have uncomfortable side effects? Founder of Achieve Acupuncture & Integrative Medicine in St. Petersburg, Dr. Gibbons uses the science of acupuncture and other integrative techniques to assist in increasing blood flow, expediting recovery and healing to treat this debilitating nerve pain. “Now when I go to bed at night I don’t have those shooting pains. I don’t have that burning sensation. I don’t have pain coming up my legs,” says Jean enthusiastically, describing life after receiving Dr. Gibbons treatments. ‘“can wear socks and shoes!” Jean and her sister now operate a successful dog walking business, sometimes covering up to 5 miles a day. “It’s life altering. As far as I am concerned, Dr. Gibbons saved my life!” There is so much to enjoy in St. Pete and Tampa Bay. Make a good day a great day by taking the first step to recovery. If you’ve missed too many tee times because of pain or missed walking the beach because you’re afraid of falling, it’s time to call Dr. Gibbons and the staff at...

The Gift of Good Health

“Put prevention at the top of your to-do list.” ‘Tis the season for questionable health choices. Between travel, houseguests, parties, and potlucks we tend to put good health on the back burner this time of year. Those poor health choices can lead to anxiety, stress, weight gain, illness, injury, and even trips to the emergency room. Most folks put their medical appointments on hold this time of year, saying they’ll get to it after the New Year. But now is actually the perfect time to check in with your primary-care provider, especially if you’ve been putting it off. An Annual Wellness Exam is covered by most insurance and is designed for you and your doctor to plan all your preventive health measures for the coming year. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that the top five causes of death - heart disease, cancer, chronic lower respiratory diseases, stroke, and unintentional injuries - are all preventable. As a doctor, it’s hard to see a patient sick or hospitalized from something that was preventable. Preventive care can drastically increase your lifespan because it allows you to catch things early and treat them more easily. According to the CDC, if everyone in the United States received the recommended clinical preventive care, we could save more than 100,000 lives each year. They say for every 100 people you treat for high blood pressure, you prevent one heart attack. I like those odds. My top preventive recommendations are:

• Flu and pneumonia vaccines

• COVID-19 vaccination or booster • All your regular cancer screenings

• Labs (cholesterol, blood sugar, lipids, PSA) • Have your blood pressure checked Preventive medicine is really the most efficient use of your healthcare resources. So, put prevention at the top of your to-do list, and give yourself the gift of good health this holiday season.

Another study this month found phthalates may be responsible for roughly 100,000 premature deaths each year in older Americans. For years we’ve known that these chemicals are not safe, but they’re still widely used to make cosmetics, detergents, vinyl floors, disposable gloves, and food packaging. SPIRITS

BEST HOLIDAY BUBBLY St. Pete’s favorite mermaid and former DTSP boutique owner keeps hitting home runs with her Mermosa wines nationally. “Wine Enthusiast named TWO of my wines as BEST BUYS for 2021 with 90 ratings - Mersecco and Celestine Rose’! I’m over the moon!” says Mermosa’s Denise Noisette. Sip it at Elizabeth’s Grapes Wine Café on Corey Ave. and take some home from there as well as Book+Bottle, Sam’s Club, Walmart, and Total Wine. It even comes in cans! Mermosa was inspired by her family’s original mermaid, Celestine Noisette, whose siren-song set her free and inspired generations of strong voices and unstoppable spirit. In addition to drinking local, stock up on these 2021 holiday faves for an auld lang syne toast! Moet & Chandon Imperial, Bollinger Brut Special Cuvee, Pol Roger Brut Champagne, Veuve Clicquot Brut Yellow Label, Ruinart Blanc de Blancs, Billecart-Salmon Brut Reserve, Taittinger Brut Champagne, Dom Pérignon Plenitude Vintage 2003 and anything from Sonoma’s Schramsberg. What’s trending? Winter rose and South African wines as well as alternative sparklers such as Cava and Prosecco.

DRINK IN THE SUNSHINE.

SPIRITED TOASTS Recently tasted at the Floridian Social Club, Brugal 1888 Doblemente Añejado is a truly exceptional rum, produced in the Dominican Republic and combining the rich flavours of bourbon and sherry casks through a double-ageing process. With notes of vanilla, red fruits and toffee intertwined with cocoa and natural oak spice. On New Year’s Eve, embrace the Spanish tradition of peeling and eating 12 grapes for good luck! Don Nano’s Favorite: Freeze coconut water in ice cube tray. Pour 50 ml Brugal 1888 over coconut ice cubes and enjoy! HAPPIEST HOURS Thursday is my favorite day to explore happy hours. I usually start downtown at Flute and Dram for live music, charcuterie and drink specials and head over to Copper Shaker or Sauvignon for half-priced pasta and cocktails/wine 4-6pm. Gratzzi serves three-course prix fixe 4-5pm for $20 with $4 house wines. The Hollander Hotel happy hour 3-6pm Mon.-Fri. is a deal and great people watching. The Canopy and Birch + Vine serve happy hour Mon.-Fri. 4-7pm with half-price signature cocktails and selected wine/beers. Stop in at Bacchus daily 3-6pm for $4.50 small plates or bubbly/wine/beer/rose. Ceviche hosts Tapas Tuesday and happy hour daily 3-6pm with $6 bites and bar (Vino Blanco, Vino Tinto, Single Well Cocktails), $7 sangria and bites or go big for $8: Caipirinha Cachaça (lime, sugar, Mojito Brugal 5yr Anejo Rum, mint, lime); Paloma Exotico Tequila (agave, ruby red grapefruit) and nibble on Ceviche Casa (shrimp, scallops, squid, market fish, garlic, cilantro, onions, tomatoes, peppers), Queso de Cabra (spicy goat cheese, tomato sauce) or Albondigas with Manchego cheese. On the beach, happy hours abound and we like to head to Clear Sky in Clearwater and Dunedin for happy hour wines, beers and signature cocktails 2-6pm daily. Salt Rock Grill and Sea Salt both have tremendous early bird dining specials and drinks.

Gazing out over the Gulf of Mexico with a stellar view of the setting sun, 82 Degrees provides nature imbued interiors and fresh Southern coastal cuisine to launch you into the decadence of an unhurried coastal vacation. Enjoy craft cocktail-sipping, fine wine tasting, and local beer distilling with alfresco dining options and locally sourced fare at a premier location destined to become a favorite.

HANGING AROUND By Caron Schwartz

Midweek movie matinees – the other afternoon delight Some days all you want to do is be entertained. Netflix, Prime, et al offer plenty of options, but sprawled on your sofa surrounded by Honey-Do chores isn’t going to cut it. You need to play hooky. You need to sit in the dark, munching too buttery, too salty popcorn, mesmerized by the big screen. It’s even better if it’s a great deal, like the ubiquitous only-on-a Tuesday matinee discount. There are plenty of choices for the “other afternoon delight.” Not that long ago I took in the Tuesday special at Regal Park Place at the Shoppes at Park Place in Pinellas Park, where for five bucks you can sit back in a comfy recliner and relax with an adult beverage. The Tuesday special is a little more complicated at the AMC Sundial in downtown St. Pete. AMC features 30% off the cost of evening shows for all matinees, but on Tuesday there’s an additional perk. If you become a Stubs Insider, your free membership reduces the price to $6.50. And there’s more! A $15 Stubs Premier membership gets 12 months of waived online fees, free popcorn, and fountain drink size upgrades. If you want to splurge, it’ll cost you $19.95/month. The Stubs A-List gets you Premier benefits plus movies in any format including Dolby Cinema, IMAX, and 3D, plus you get 10% back on refreshments. The CMX Cinemas Tyrone in St. Pete’s Tyrone Square is a little different. Movies are $5 all-day Tuesday, so if you really can’t play hooky at least you get a discount if you show up after work. Indie art-house Green Light Cinema, 221 Second Ave. N, St. Petersburg, doesn’t offer discounts any day or time of the week. But where else are you going to see indies, foreign, docs, classics, and local content? Maybe the historic Beach Theatre? According to new owner Christopher Scott, who’s just begun to repair and renovate the 81-year-old St. Pete Beach edifice, the venue is far from ready for prime time. But he’s open to suggestions. For more information and updates see www.spbeachtheatre.org.

ANIMAL ADVENTURES Florida’s wildlife may be one of its greatest tourist attractions, from the Lowry Park Zoo in Tampa to Safari Wilderness Ranch in Lakeland or Lion Country Safari in Loxahatchee. Here in Pinellas, we have the Alligator and Wildlife Discovery Centre in John’s Pass, almost 10,000 square feet and home to almost 250 animals including lizards, turtles and tortoises, amphibians, a variety of small mammals, fresh and saltwater marine life, and of course…alligators. Help them celebrate their 10th Anniversary 12/1712/23. Tampa Bay Watch Discovery Center in The Pier DTSP is amazing, and there are tons of adventures and classes. We will miss Winter the Dolphin, but her spirit lives on at Clearwater Marine Aquarium where you can interact and learn about marine rescue and wildlife.

KEYS TO MY HEART The Margaritaville Beach House Key West is now open, following an ongoing multi-million investment to bring the full Margaritaville experience to life along Key West’s largest beach. Previously the Barbary Beach House Key West, the rebranded and upgraded resort features popular family-friendly amenities, an expanded retail outlet, and Tin Cup Chalice Bar & Chill featuring fresh seafood, American-Caribbean dishes all spiced up with a Southern twist.

In her collection you’ll find amethyst, blue topaz, green amethyst, lots of turquoise and lapis. She just started using cloisonné beads for a colorful accent. She uses mostly semi-precious stones, Vermeil pieces (gold over silver) and gold-filled wire and chain when designing the necklaces and earrings. Dori’s world travels and Florida style inspire her stunning collection. “I find that women love to fill their neckline with beautiful items, mine are mostly of the chunkier variety. When I moved to Florida, I realized that some of the days are really hot, and your neck gets a little sticky with sunscreen. I started making some earrings for a little more flash as an alternative.”

BEADS & BAUBLES Dr. Dori Kazdin debuted her Dr. Dori Jewelry collection at WADA Nov. 13th at ArtWalk. The Chicago transplant lives in Tierra Verde full-time after years of snowbirding during infrequent vacays from her busy medical practice. This witty woman has an artist soul. Both she and husband/realtor/actor Ron Goldstein are arts enthusiasts, attending jazz and theater shows as well as gallery openings. “Back in the 80s I discovered some beautiful Czech glass beads when I lived in San Diego. I used to love going to the bead district and started doing it as a hobby when I was doing my fellowship in immunology. Just for fun I started to go to bead shows, what woman doesn’t love gemstones? I was in New York visiting my parents and found out there was a bead district near the garment district. I would call my husband and say, “oops honey, just spent this month’s mortgage cash,” says Dr. Dori. Her love of beading grew. “I made primarily necklaces for myself, my mother, some friends. I would laugh and show my mom that this is my ‘fall collection’ when I did a few more necklaces for her. Mom has difficulty with clasps, so I started making a lot of opera length necklaces, those that fit easily over your head.” 40

CHARLIE PARKER POTTERY Owning a bowl from this celebrated artist is like winning a Wonka golden ticket. At his Sixth Ave. DTSP studio, you can take classes and buy pottery from Parker and other ceramic artists. Charlie Parker’s ceramic career began in 1967 at the age of 14 when he joined Minnesota Clay Company as a part-time clay mixer. From 1971 to 1975 Charlie studied with Warren Westerberg at Westerberg Pottery in Minneapolis. During his apprenticeship with Westerberg, he focused on form and expression. While working with Westerberg, Charlie’s interest in glaze application and firing technique were refined.

In 1996, Charlie partnered with Russ Gustafson-Hilton and Stan Cowen to establish St. Petersburg Clay Company. St. Pete Clay began as a small clay studio with 12 members, a ceramic supply store and gallery. In 2002, St. Pete Clay moved to a new 33,000 square foot location in the historic Seaboard Coastline Train Depot and in 2010, Charlie started his studio. The award-winning artist’s accolades include a 2018 Muse award for Artist of the Year.

Working on the blockchain One of only two privately owned first printings of the U.S. Constitution sold at Sotheby’s New York recently for $43.2 million, becoming the most expensive book, manuscript, historical document, or printed text ever to hit the auction block. The winning bidder, who remains anonymous, defeated ConstitutionDAO, a group of cryptocurrency enthusiasts who banded together to fundraise on the blockchain to purchase the document. The final price beats out an auction record that stood for 27 years, when Bill Gates purchased the Codex Leicester by Leonardo da Vinci at Christie’s in 1994 for $30.8 million. The “DAO” in ConstitutionDAO is short for decentralized autonomous organization, a type of community-run business that operates on the blockchain and does not have a central governing body.

The Florida Aquarium named seven new members to its board of directors. Five standing members were also reappointed. Despite the pandemic, the Aquarium continues to grow attendance and revenue, increase research and conservation efforts, and expand educational and community impact. Born in Tampa, Kris started playing at the Tampa Bay Polo Club and at the young age of 15 turned professional. By the time he was 17 he had attained a 3-goal handicap. Within another year he was rated at 4 goals, and at the age of 19 he carried a 5-goal handicap, at 21 he achieved his 6-goal handicap outdoors and was among the top 1% of the American players. The playwright says the production is about “an unusual family unit trying to break that cycle of abuse with the current generation. It is focused particularly on the struggles of women in American society, who must negotiate sexism, patriarchy and the complications of pregnancy in addition to overcoming all the other challenges every human must face.” Directed by Tina Bell. studiograndcentral.com Sunday, December 5 – Robby’s Pancake Breakfast $5, 8am-Noon, Treasure Island Community Center, 1 Park Place and 106th Avenue. Meet Alyssa & Ray of Churned Ice Cream! Ray, a chef from the UK, and Alyssa, a Minnesotan, met in 2000 in Australia. Ray moved “across the pond” to the USA to be with the love of his life in 2001! In 2011 they made a major life decision. They renovated a ‘71 VW Bus, sold all their belongings including their house, and took off on a world trip where they traveled to three continents in the VW (nicknamed Diva due to her high maintenance nature). They shipped her to Europe and eventually drove to North Africa. There they helped run a luxury safari lodge in Kenya for almost three years. Then in Myanmar, they helped build and run an island resort. Then came Covid! Stuck on the island for over 55 days they had a lot of time to dream…ice cream dreams, that is. After working abroad for almost 10 years and having their hand slightly forced by Covid, they found themselves back in the U.S., driving Diva from Minnesota to Florida in search of a new life. Their dream was to make ice cream, which in turn would make themselves and others happy! They stumbled across the Corey Avenue Sunday Market in St. Pete Beach 3 ½ months and 5,000 miles later, and “it just felt like this is where we belonged.” Soon after, they made St. Pete their new home and Corey Avenue Sunday Market their first market! Their small batch homemade ice cream is all hand made from the finest egg yolks, cream, milk, sugar, vanilla and high quality ingredients such as hand shaved Belgium chocolate. No stabilizers, no preservatives. They also have vegan ice cream, frozen fruit bars and the best Puppy Pints around! When asked, they will tell you “We are living the dream and couldn’t be happier.” Come meet them and try their yummy treats Sundays on Corey Ave. and Wednesdays at Madeira Beach 10am-2pm, and Fridays at the Dunedin Downtown Market 9am-2pm. Breaking news! Thank you, Congressman Charlie Crist, for securing a major grant to investigate red tide on Gulf shores and algae choking Florida estuaries: “Florida’s waters are in crisis. Today, I’m announcing

$15.2 million in National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) funding for harmful algae bloom research to put America’s greatest minds to work and end the scourge of red tide!” SHARK TANK The Tampa Bay Estuary Program and Restore America’s Estuaries awarded a $165,111 grant to New College of Florida associate professor Jayne Gardiner to fund shark research in Tampa and assess population trends for Tampa Bay shark species. “Juvenile sharks are a critical component of a healthy Tampa Bay ecosystem, but they’ve historically been overlooked in many monitoring programs,” Gardiner said. “Young sharks of several species have been documented in lower Tampa Bay and our research will help us better understand the Bay’s potential role as a nursery.”

BEAUTIFY OUR BEACHES Pinellas County Park volunteers work hard to keep beaches clean by collecting trash year-round, and now, it’s easier than ever thanks to Parks & Conservation Resources’ Baskets for Beaches program. Park visitors will notice stands with yellow baskets at Fort De Soto, Sand Key and Fred Howard parks. You can make a difference by picking up one of the reusable baskets and collecting trash as you walk the beach. The collected trash can then be disposed of in the appropriate container, and the basket can be returned to the rack for the next guest. FYI: 727-582-2100.

GREEN GIRL The Urban Harvest was created by Elise Pickett in 2014 to help others cultivate a more sustainable home and healthy diet by teaching them about growing their own vegetables at home so “they can lead healthier, happier lives and have a positive impact on our planet that leaves a legacy for our children to be proud of.” You can join the seed club, take a class, or purchase veggies or herbs from her. After taking classes on composting, worm composting, raising chickens, vegetable gardening, microgreens and aquaponics, Elise launched her enterprise. You can order online and pick up seeds or seasonal garden delights from her directly. www.theurbanharvest.com/seed-shop

PET HEALTH

Seasons Greetings! The holidays continue and we want your pet to be as safe as possible so let’s talk about foreign bodies. Last article we discussed common issues that we can see with ingestion of certain foods. Foreign bodies are typically solid inedible and undigestible objects. Some can be passed with little issue in some patients. Others can cause partial or full obstruction (blockage) and need to be dealt with on an emergent basis. We see foreign body ingestion throughout the year, however during the holidays we see more cases due to the number of new toys, decorations, and other such temptations.

Although tinsel has lost popularity as a tree decoration, if used it can be very tempting for both cats and dogs to ingest. Floss, cooking twine, fishing line, ribbons and other such materials are more common string-like materials that are commonly ingested. The issue with all of these is that they can cause linear foreign bodies, which are inherently dangerous. Part of the material can get wadded up and become stuck or lodged while a loose portion can be pulled down into the intestinal tract. As the intestines continue to try to pull the material through serious damage can occur. Other foreign bodies we commonly see are kids toys, hair ties, socks, underwear, super balls, fishing lures, ornaments, palm nuts, grass wads…and the list goes on. These can cause damage by causing a blockage as well as causing pressure damage or lacerating the gastrointestinal tract. There is no end to what some pets might eat and believe it or not some pets have swallowed multiple stuffed animal toys whole, swallowed eating

“Get Sirius About Your Future” December 2021 The last month of 2021 begins with a New Moon in Sagittarius on the 3rd which is also a Solar Eclipse! This new lunar cycle is filled with a sense of adventure, encouraging us to travel and socialize. Mars visits Sagittarius on the 13th increasing the restless energy; exploration and education vibe. But, on the same day, Mercury moves on to serious Capricorn and a bit of practicality keeps us grounded when making plans. Visiting family and traditions will be considered. Responsibilities and obligations are also considered as we come closer to the year’s end once again. The Full Cold Moon in Gemini on the 18th illuminates our way as we get ready for holiday celebrations. Living in the moment is a major theme and communication in person or otherwise is highlighted. When topics arise, we can be open and adaptable to others’ opinions. We are on the go and ready for a variety of different options but may get scattered along the way. Love and money planet Venus stations Retrograde in cool, cautious Capricorn on the 19th. For the next several weeks this celestial influence brings relationship issues out to be mended. Financial concerns also will be addressed. With an aspect to transformative Pluto, we can be sure of some intense and complete developments during this cycle and shadow. The Winter Solstice occurs as the Sun moves into Capricorn on the 22nd bringing our first day of winter. It is the shortest day of the year and leaves only nine days of 2021. On Christmas day a Virgo moon makes sure we pay attention to details and a variety of mixed energy promises a lively holiday. Jupiter moves into Pisces on the 30th bringing luck and growth to the sign for most of next year.

And on New Year’s Eve spirits run high with a Sagittarius moon ready for a big celebration but a challenge not to overdo or overindulge is present along with an element of uncertainty as the New Year approaches. Wishing you the best as we welcome 2022; please read on for insight into your sign and the signs of those that are special to you! SAGITTARIUS: Your new year begins now with plenty of variety and all of the energy you will need to forge ahead. The spotlight shines onto partners; make adjustments. Values change; finances begin a major makeover now. CAPRICORN: New plans are made in private as you contemplate moving forward soon. Social life quiets and energy goes inward. You are favored and get your way. Spotlight falls on work and duties; income may increase. AQUARIUS: A new interest in social life or group activities keeps you busy and energized. Superiors favor you; assist with goals. Social activities are enjoyed. The spotlight falls on conversations and everyday happenings as the year ends. TAURUS: New beginnings in finances need professional guidance; not casual advice. Let go of old patterns.

Partners are more cooperative after mid-month. New values and income are highlighted; superiors assist you. GEMINI: New paths open in personal and business partnerships. Financial assistance is likely; resources transformed. Work on health; then work with others. Full Moon spotlight falls on you; travel, learn, and explore interests. CANCER: The workplace brings new opportunities and much activity. A wellness plan begins with new info. Partners are easy-going; interesting. The Full Moon shines into private affairs and reflection as the year ends. LEO: New paths develop with romance and creative interests. Homelife has your energy; children are enjoyed. Work and health are ready for makeovers but the spotlight falls on social activities and fun with friends. VIRGO: Home and family have new beginnings; work together to calm irritations. LIBRA: Short trips and many conversations are your new theme this month. You enjoy homelife and family time. Spending slows down. ENCOURAGING WORDS

By Dr. Dennis Merritt Jones

It Isn’t The Size That Matters

“Never worry about the size of your Christmas tree. In the eyes of children, they are all 30 feet tall.” ~ Larry Wilde

I recall the first year we put up our

Christmas tree after our newest family member, Mac Doodle (a Goldendoodle puppy) arrived. Mac was a less than 1-year-old, 70-pound “puppy” – a virtual bouncing ball of fur–who had more energy and curiosity than my 2-year-old grandson. As we brought out our Christmas decorations, Mac was beyond delighted with the many possibilities that lie waiting for him in all the unfamiliar sights, colors and fragrances. He was ecstatic – and we had not yet put up the Christmas tree. In an instant Diane and I had a shared vision of what our home would look like with a fallen Christmas tree, ornaments and gifts spread throughout every room in the house, and we began laughing. Time for Plan B. We decided to buy a small 3-foot tree and place it on a table out of Mac’s reach. I have to admit; it took a few days to get used to having a tabletop tree. Traditionally, we had always placed our gifts under the tree, but this year there was no room on the table to do so. In its diminutive size, the tree just didn’t quite feel as “Christmasy.” It surely didn’t measure up to the spectacular trees I have enjoyed over the years, and I was beginning to think I would miss the grandeur of the Christmas “feeling” in our home. 62

“Remember, if Christmas isn’t found in your heart, you won’t find it under a tree.” ~ Charlotte Carpenter It was then that I considered the deeper meaning and purpose of having presents and a tree at all. After some self-inquiry, the awareness that came to me is that it wasn’t really about the size or location of the tree. Irrespective of its stature and where we placed it in our home, the Christmas tree, with its beautiful trim and bright lights, was a symbol, an external reminder of an internal and eternal truth. That truth is much greater than any gift that could fit under the tree; it is the birth of the awareness of the Christ’s presence being manifest in the world in and through each of us; it is the birth of the true Christmas spirit as unconditional love. One of my teachers, Dr. Ernest Holmes, embellished this point when he wrote: “Christmas is for remembrance. The love manifesting through our gifts to each other typifies the offering of Life, the givingness of Spirit to its creation. The hands of the Eternal are outstretched through our hands, and the heart of the Infinite beats in the human breast. But the giver must give of himself, for ‘The gift without the giver is bare’. It is not, then, in lavish gifts we find true giving but in the sweet simplicity of

remembrance, in the kindly thought, the tolerant mind and the gentle act. Love alone can give love, sympathy alone can sympathize and only goodness can really do or be good. When heart speaks to heart, a divine conversation has taken place, a heavenly discourse. Each of us has something to give. Let each see that he gives of his best. If we are bringing our gifts to the altar of love, nothing less than the best will be acceptable. Nothing less than all is enough. May the real spirit of Christmas–the giving of self to life enter and abide in you now and through all time.” I am grateful that Mac Doodle came into my life that Christmas. Perhaps the greatest Christmas “present” any of us can give this year invites us to extend ourselves far beyond the material; it isn’t the size of the tree or the presents we offer; it is the intangible gift of our mindful presence...our compassion...our time...our respect...our generosity of spirit and our remembrance that it is the Love born this season we celebrate all year long. This is the most exquisite offering of all; how you share it with your world is the gift you give back to the giver of all life this Christmas season.
