GIRL POWER

by Sarah Gordon

I remember them so clearly. When I was in grade 2, many of the girls in my class would show up once a week wearing their crisp brown dresses with mysterious badges sewn onto their sleeves. Their jaunty brown berets were perched on their heads, and added to their ensemble was the most magical component of all, a gold pixie enrolment pin, which to me was like a glittering diamond, and how did you get one of those pins anyway? The Brownies fascinated me, although I was too shy to join. However, my interest in anthropology must have been germinating, and to my young eyes, I was witnessing a secret society at work within the Brownie sisterhood! Back then, Brownies headed off to their meetings after school. Today meetings take place in the early evening to accommodate busy lives, and unless you run into girls selling Girl Guide cookies in the autumn or spring, they are less visible. You may not be aware that the organization is flourishing, and Girl Guides of Canada is the largest organization for girls and women in the country. Girls from ages 5 to 17 are participating in programs for their age range including Sparks, Brownies, Girl Guides, Pathfinders and Rangers. Although I never did muster up the courage to become a Brownie, I am now a Guider with a Richmond Brownie unit. I believe in giving back to my community and I have a strong desire to make a difference in people’s lives. I have witnessed both of my daughters blossom in their Girl Guide groups. It is their special place, where they form friendships and have Guiders as role models. Girls are encouraged to develop their own identity and positive relationships with others. They gain confidence by learning skills that they can use in their daily lives, everything from safety and eco-awareness to the importance of healthy choices. They can explore science, the arts, camping and the outdoors, and develop a commitment to their community. Girl Guides is an organization where all of this is possible. This year Girl Guides is celebrating its 100th anniversary. The organization has managed to stay fresh and exciting for generations of girls. At the end of the summer, registration will take place for the fall. I strongly encourage parents to enrol your daughter. The memories will last a lifetime. Adults often reminisce and proudly tell me that they were once a Brownie. If that is not enough to entice your daughter to join, tell her that our hometown hero, Olympic snowboarder Alexa Loo was a Brownie. Now that is cool! Website: girlguides.ca 8

Summer! Steveston water park, leisurely days with my mom and dad riding my bike along the river, and playing street hockey with my friends. Summer Camps? I played basketball at the Richmond Oval for a week and had Breanne Watson as my coach—she is a professional basketball player and was an excellent teacher. I attended a week at Delta Gymnastics to see if I wanted to join their club since I am looking for a more competitive program. I love Delta Gym but my mom said she won’t drive that far. That’s ok, I have been going to Cartwheels since I was 3 years old and have Daniel Braun as my coach, who is a member of the national team and my inspiration. Next I attended a week long Film and TV Acting camp at Second Avenue Studios where we learned about scripts, characters and improvising. Vacation? For the last week of July, we head to Vegas. I have been before and know all the fun stuff for kids to do. The 8000 ft long lazy river around the five pools at the MGM is my favourite and of course the dessert buffet at the Wynn Hotel. Steveston Summer? My mom told me that August is full of events in Steveston that we will go to. We will miss the outdoor movie on August 1st but will go to London Farm on August 8th for Family Farm Fair. I like to ride the pony and pet the farm animals that they bring in. I hope we go into the tea house this year for fresh scones and whip cream! We will try to go to the Salmon Stomp too for the music festival on the same day. The Steveston Sockeye Spin bike race is on August 15th and I will be in the kids event at 11am with my decorated bike. Then on Aug 21st we always go to Britannia Shipyard for the Maritime Festival. I take a friend and we see Salty the seagull mascot and look inside the shipyard building and go on all the cool boats on the dock. Last year I sanded a wooden boat. This year there will be Dragon Boat races in the river. August? I will play lots of golf in August at Mayfair Lakes with my favourite coach Blair Wilkie, a week of musical theatre at The Arts Connection, drum and piano lessons, and private gymnastics lessons at Cartwheels. Yes, I will find time to play at the beach and at the waterpark with my friends and spend a day at the PNE. I joined the Steveston Library Reading Club so every Wednesday I get a sticker for the books I read. September? In September, I am excited to start my first competitive dancing hip hop trio with my older friends Josh & Josh. I may hang up my tap shoes for a bit and continue with jazz and musical theatre. School starts September 7 and I am excited to start Grade two and see all my friends at Westwind. Favourites? My favourite Steveston places right now are: Steve’s Board Shop, Splash, Candy Aisle, Mary’s Icecream, Blue Canoe Waterfront Restaurant, Starbucks, Village Bikes, the monkey bars at Steveston Community Park, my neighbours driveway for hockey, and the outdoor tennis courts. Favourite new toy is a mini marshmallow bow & arrow from Chirps. Most wanted: skateboard. 10

See you around Steveston!

It’s hard to believe but schools starts back up next month. Before we know it summer will be gone and it will be back to school and back to the soccer and football fields, the martial arts dojo, the running track, the ice rink and the dance studio. But, believe it or not, if you’re little ones are new to sports and activities this year, NOW is the time to be making those all important decisions on how to keep our kids active and healthy, so the big question now is what type of sport best suits by Dave Gillis my child? All sports can be categorized as either individual or team and as a coach and professional involved in both categories I often get asked which is better for my child, individual sports or team sports? Both types of sport have their advantages and disadvantages and there are plenty of reasons for taking up a sport in either class. However, most people find that from an early age, they tend to be drawn towards one or the other. That is not to say that someone who enjoys playing soccer or hockey cannot enjoy swimming, judo or dance, but it does mean that most people have skills that do translate more towards working as an individual or as part of a team. Individual sports can often be more appealing to people who are new to sport thanks to the ease with which you can start to take part in them. Coaching is provided, times are set and expectations are on you and not a large group of people. The other big advantage of individual sport is that it appeals to people who work better alone because they know that success is entirely dependent on them. The advantages of team sports are, as would be expected, in many ways the opposite of those for individual sport. One of the biggest draws of team sports is that the responsibility for success is equally shared out between all members of the team. Another advantage is the community aspect of team sport. This community aspect helps to spur people on, as within a team there is always a sense of camaraderie and teammates tend to encourage one another to achieve their absolute best. So where does your son or daughter fit in? Well, physical skills, such as being fast or strong, can cross over between both individual and team sports, but it is the social skills such as teamwork and leadership which can determine whether you are a team sport or an individual sport kind of person. My advice is to try them both. I have two wonderful children and they participate equally in both team and individual sports and receive the benefits of each, but as they participate in more and grow, I find they are starting to enjoy one category of sport more than the other. It is that enjoyment, which determines how much time we, as a family, spend committed to that sport. This is the same deciding factor for many families in whether to take on a team sport or an individual sport as a primary form of healthy activity. But remember, if our end goal is to encourage strong, capable, healthy and confident active children, the only bad choice is not getting involved in either one.

Dave Gillis is the current Co-ordinator of Sport and Instructional Programming for the Department of Athletics and Recreation for the University of BC and has over 25 years experience working with adults, youth and children in health, fitness and sport as both a professionally certified coach and master level trainer with IDEA, the 18 International Association of Health and Fitness.

As a parent, maybe you don‟t know where to start or even begin when you are looking for child care. Maybe you‟ve relied on your friend who‟s been down the early-education-choice path with her kids already, but she is just as unsure as you are. And, let's face it: the parent grapevine is the first to notify you of the next greatest thing, or the one thing you should absolutely not do. So how do you know you are making the right decision? Child care providers don‟t always make this easier for the family, either. Shortage of spaces means that many parents will just go on a dozen of waitlists, hoping to take the first space that comes up. Sometimes parents are given just hours to accept a space and pay a non-refundable security deposit or risk losing a space. Moving a child around from school to school should be avoided as much as possible as it disrupts attachment. So doing your research ahead of time is essential. When children are able to build strong and lasting attachments to both caregivers and peers, children are more likely to feel safe to learn and explore – and will have better social, emotional and even cognitive development. Healthy attachment will help children make friendships, self-calm, and regulate emotions. One parent recently told me that she had a difficult time asking questions because she was worried it might affect her chances at finding care. Another parents said she just trusted a recommendation. Recommendations are a good place to start, but keep in mind that children are different and will often thrive in different environments. Some children will do well in a highly structured environment, others will need more freedom. Considering the physical environment, structure of the day, time spent indoors and outdoors, length of time participation is expected in teacher-led activities, required or not-required nap…these may all effect your child‟s happiness. Parents should also consider educational philosophy. For a childcare centre, a philosophy should be the „guiding‟ principle behind how educators teach, make guidance decisions, set up the environment, and chose what experiences to offer and focus on. Just like a good marriage, parents should not register in a childcare centre planning on changing it – but should find a centre that has the same guiding philosophy as they do. Make a list of the five most important things you want to see in your child when they enter kindergarten. Although every parent wants a happy and confident child, the details of what parents believe will lead to happiness are very different. This is where philosophy plays in: every centre philosophy will lead to a different environment that supports specific development and experiences. You want a centre that will fit with what you want your child to experience and learn – otherwise, you will inevitably be unsatisfied You deserve to be a knowledgeable consumer when child-care shopping. This means being very clear and honest with yourself about what you want – and then doing some research. Expect the centre to be transparent: sharing the environment and schedule/ curriculum with you and openly discussing their philosophy, giving examples of how it is implemented. If you are an educated consumer, you will know if you are being fed the “marketing” line, or if there is genuine knowledge, passion and sincerity. Consider what that philosophy will mean when teachers are intervening in social conflict, or at circle time, or at lunchtime. Is it the sort of care that you are looking for?
