Publisher's Note We are now witnessing the beauty of the change in seasons; colourful leaves are fluttering to the ground, refreshing rain has returned after weeks of wildfire smoke, there is coolness in the air and the days are getting shorter. Autumn is filled with traditions. Try out a new recipe this Thanksgiving (time to try brining a turkey?) or make your tried and true favourite dishes. Get crafty and create a Halloween costume and décor for the big night. The Steveston Merchants Association is busy planning Trick or Treat in Steveston Village, Girls’ Night Out, the Christmas Classic Car Cruise and Santa’s arrival by boat. The local historic sites have fabulous fall plans. The Gulf of Georgia Cannery hosts the Cannery Farmers Market and The Haunted Sea: Halloween at the Cannery. Britannia Shipyards’ Historic Halloween Ghost Tour and Trick or Treat on the Boardwalk offers spookily good fun. Before we know it, it will be time to think about the holiday season with craft fairs and bazaars beginning in mid-November. We are happy to play a part in celebrating Gudrun’s tenth anniversary. Passion, dedication and creativity are the driving force behind this popular Steveston hub. We showcase the Gudrun crew on the cover at Sweet Digz Farm where they source much of their local produce.
Pharmasave Steveston Village is located on the “Steveston Scramble” at the corner of Moncton and No. 1 Road. Two years ago the team of four owners purchased the pharmacy and have quickly become part of the community. They are friendly, willing to help, and are always looking out for the best new and local products. We say thank you and happy retirement to the owners who are closing their long-standing businesses: Steveston General Store (35 years), Pat’s Galley (29 years) and Candy Dish (20 years). I’m looking forward to this new season, as I pull out my warm clothes, head to the rink to watch my son play hockey, outfit my dog in her rain coat and get lots of work done indoors. Happy autumn!

Gudrun:
Reflecting on Ten Years in The Village Story by Sarah Gordon

Patrick Tubajon and I met on a late summer afternoon to discuss Gudrun’s upcoming ten-year anniversary this November. We sat under the impressive oak tree in Gudrun’s peaceful courtyard at the long hemlock table that is literally constructed around the tree. In 2008 Patrick made a mark on the tree in pen to chart its growth, and like his business, he
can’t believe how much both have grown. It seems like yesterday that Patrick was hard at work toiling to get his new business open. I recall passing by and checking in periodically during those eleven months to see what stage he was at with the renovation. It was a labour of love. He threw his creative talents into the restaurant’s design and construction. With the assistance of a friend who is an architect, Patrick built the two large tables (inside and out), the chandelier, the bar, and the wine wall.
In the ten years since Gudrun opened, Patrick has seen customers’ babies grow up. Some of them celebrate birthdays annually at the restaurant. 6
Anyone who knows Patrick is familiar with his sense of humour. When asked what his role as an owner entails he says, “I am the janitor; I do repairs, the books, and I am a waiter.” Gudrun is named after a former roommate who Patrick met while attending L’Universite D’Avignon in France. He says, “Gudrun introduced the world of proper cheese to me.” Before becoming a restaurateur Patrick wore a variety of artistic hats. He was a dancer, a choreographer, and a wedding planner. He always hoped to one day own a restaurant. Patrick was raised in Richmond but envisioned his business would be located in Vancouver. He focussed his search there, however, the space he was interested in fell through. Serendipitously, while he was in Steveston walking his dog she pulled him into the secluded courtyard. Patrick discovered an art gallery in the process of closing and knew he had found Gudrun’s home.
Steveston had not seen anything like Gudrun. The cutting edge concept of a tasting room offering cheese, charcuterie, and wine was a welcome addition. Over the years the concept has evolved. The restaurant’s menu expanded and while the mainstay of cheese and charcuterie remains, there is also a daily fresh sheet that includes

some staple items (there might be a mutiny if Gudrun’s mac & five cheese entrée were ever to disappear!) along with another all time favourite, the sticky toffee pudding. You can always count on finding soups and salads, and seasonal entrées. Talented chef Paul Finlay, sous chef Christian Pelech and cook Anthony Lee lead the kitchen. The mandate is to source local ingredients whenever possible. Everything on the menu is made in-house including the brioche and pasta. Patrick says, “Paul is an awesome master of flavours. He creates such beautiful food.” “We have a passion for what we put out,” says Patrick. Steveston based Sweet Digz Farm is one of Gudrun’s produce suppliers. The restaurant also sources meat from Two
Rivers Speciality Meats and artisanal and small production cheese from Benton Brothers Fine Cheese. Patrick is honoured that Gudrun has been judged three times by Vancouver Magazine as Best Restaurant in Richmond. The restaurant received silver in 2014 and gold in 2015 and 2018.
Gudrun is a Steveston hub. It’s a place to enjoy an intimate experience as a couple or come together with a group of friends and raise a glass.

Patrick says with gratitude, “I love the people who come here. We have awesome customers.” Many of Gudrun’s clients are Stevestonites, while others come from as far away as England, Iceland and Manila. There’s no denying that the food, the B.C. small batch wine list (that rotates frequently) and local craft beers are a huge part of the attraction to Gudrun, but there’s something more that keeps people coming back and that is the staff. In addition to the kitchen team, servers Nancy Pang and Chris Panadero help create the experience along with Patrick’s natural flair as a host, which makes people feel right at home. Patrick is deeply appreciative of his ensemble and what they can pull off in a small space with limited product. When asked what makes Gudrun special Patrick replies, “It’s a combination of the staff and the passion and creativity that we bring to the restaurant.” I suspected there would be a story behind the 100-year-old piano that arrived at Gudrun six years ago. With a smile, Patrick reveals, “I won it in a bet with a fisherman.” Customers have been known to play it. Paul is also a talented pianist but leaves his recitals until after hours. Gudrun also offers dinner clubs with seven
course meals for up to 34 people. Ask Patrick for more details. As well, the bistro has hosted numerous weddings; Patrick’s previous job as a wedding planner fits naturally with these functions. Couples have travelled from Hong Kong, Melbourne, and Palm Springs to hold their wedding and reception at Gudrun. On a personal note, Patrick would like to express his sincere appreciation to the many Stevestonites who supported and offered help when his house burnt down two years ago. Two years ago Christine Cheng, Frederick Cheng, Josephine Leonard, and Martin Leonard purchased Pharmasave Steveston Village. They were not strangers to business ownership as they also operate Cloverdale Pharmasave. Their parents, Dr. Henry Cheng and Anna Cheng, opened the Cloverdale pharmacy 35 years ago. Christine, Frederick, and Josephine helped out after school and during holidays. With training in both orthodox and western medicine as well as herbal and homeopathic medicine, Dr. Cheng helped thousands of customers stay in good health by using alternatives properly. He assisted many animal owners when orthodox treatment had given up hope. Supporting cancer patients with herbal and homeopathic medicines was another of his specialties.

The couple retired in 2014 and passed the torch to their children. Frederick says, “We continue to offer the same dedication and passion that our parents showed.” Frederick joined Cloverdale Pharmasave as a full-time pharmacist in 2008; his sister Christine is also a pharmacist and came on board in 2011. Frederick admits it was not his childhood dream to become a pharmacist. He is a talented pianist and contemplated teaching; he laughs when he says, “My piano teacher said it was not a good career choice for raising a family.” Instead, he headed off to SFU where he earned a degree in kinesiology. Soon after he attended UBC and earned his pharmacy degree. While completing his education,
Frederick worked part-time alongside his father in the store’s veterinary and natural health department. Christine works out of Cloverdale Pharmasave. Like her father, Christine’s passion is integrating orthodox and Western medicine with alternative and holistic therapies. Josephine joined the management team in 2001; she holds the position of marketing manager for Steveston and Cloverdale and her husband Martin is general manager for both locations.
In 2016 an opportunity arose to purchase Pharmasave Steveston Village. Frederick says with a smile, “Steveston is very similar to Cloverdale. They are both small towns, and like the television show “Cheers,” everyone knows you and knows your name.”

He has gotten to know many of the local business owners and appreciates the connections. “It’s nice to see people do well and it’s sad to see people go,” he says. Frederick is a compounding pharmacist; he specializes in preparing customized medications that are not available commercially or over the counter. These prescription medications for both human and veterinary clients can be made in different forms including liquids, powders, tablets, creams, ointments and even gummy bears and lollipops. Patient care is Frederick’s passion. He mentions that people should be careful not to believe everything they read online and to avoid selfdiagnosis. He says, “As pharmacists, we focus on overall health. We know when people should see a doctor.”

He jokes and says, “Some customers know my kids through photos better than my own family!” People will drop in to say hello even if they aren’t picking up a prescription. He points out Pharmasave Steveston Village is a pet-friendly pharmacy; they are allowed inside, after all, they are clients too. Frederick says, “We learn a lot from our clients.” If a customer requests a product the pharmacy’s staff is happy to look into ordering it. The Pharmasave owners value community involvement. Frederick, Martin and Cloverdale’s integrative health pharmacist Lyle
Sunada recently shaved their heads as a fundraiser for the Canadian Cancer Society. Both Pharmasave locations regularly fundraise for Ending Violence Association of BC, Canadian Cancer Foundation, Canadian Cancer Society, Terry Fox Foundation, Variety Club, Canucks For Kids Fund, and Canucks Autism Network. Locally, Frederick attends health fairs and plays an active role at The Maple Residences where Pharmasave has offered shingles vaccine clinics. He reports that he was scheduled as a guest speaker at The Maples but had some free time before his presentation so he sat down at their piano
and played. Some residents were a little mystified when he reappeared as Frederick the pharmacist! We have reached that time of the year that people dread – flu season. The key months to get the flu shot are from October through to January.
