Publisher's Note Steveston and summer go hand in hand, from sunshine, to spectacular sunsets, time spent outdoors on some of the best patios around (whether it’s your own or one of our many award winning restaurants), and refreshing sea breezes to keep us cool. June starts with Doors Open Richmond celebrating arts, culture and heritage - come out and explore the twelve Steveston sites free of charge. Take in the Sockeye Run Car Show and Shine in Steveston Park. Steveston Alive! actors return to tread the boardwalks in historic Steveston with theatrical walking tour vignettes that reimagine life in 1917. Children will soon by trading in their schoolbooks for swimsuits. They will head to Steveston Outdoor Pool and little ones will merrily race around the waterpark. The Steveston Farmers and Artisans Market takes place every second Sunday. O’Hare’s Gastropub hosts Steveston Wine Fest on June 23 and is introducing a new Cider & Sours Festival on July 21 in addition to Steveston Beer Fest on August 25. The biggest event, of course, is the Steveston Salmon Festival and Richmond Canada Day on July 1 in celebration of Canada’s birthday.

A detailed guide is included in this issue. The Richmond Maritime Festival has moved to July 28 and 29. On the cover we feature Ken Miller who was not only raised in Richmond, but has also spent all of his adult years living and working here, like four generations of his family before him. We are always excited when new businesses open in Steveston. In this issue we feature Stevestonites Sascha Kuypers and David Silva. They recently opened The Porthole, a cosy new cosmopolitan wine bar with beer and wine on tap. We also offer up a warm welcome to Cucina Piccola, Sanctuary Café, Steveston Built Local Tap House & Grill and Advantage SpeechLanguage Pathology. Sadly, we say goodbye to Serenity Home Décor. Enjoy this well loved season. Stroll along the boardwalk, buy fresh fish from the dock, picnic at Garry Point, go on a whale-watching tour, explore the local shops – the possibilities are countless. Tourists travel from far and wide to experience what is right here on our doorstep – lucky us!

Ken Miller:

Like Father, Like Son

Story by Sarah Gordon

Photos submitted

Not many Stevestonites can claim to have a lengthy history in the area; however, not only was our cover model Ken Miller raised in Richmond, but he also spent all of his adult years living and working here, like four generations of his family before him. Ken’s connection to this area dates back to his great great grandfather Robert Johnson who was one of Steveston’s early residents; he owned property along the dyke at the end of No. 2 Road at London Landing and helped draw up the original town site map. Ken’s great grandfather Jim Trivett and his wife Katherine had a farm on the No. 2 Road property. They had chickens and a few cows and Katherine operated the area’s first door to door milk delivery service. Jim worked on the Steveston waterfront and helped build the four-mile long rock jetty that begins at Garry Point and runs out to the Lightship.

8

In the 1930s Ken’s grandmother Myrtle May Miller became the first female floor lady (foreman) at Imperial Cannery. Ken’s father Gerry Miller was a bit of a local legend. He was born in a house on Second Avenue in 1928 and was the only Caucasian child within half a mile of his home. When children were out playing, passers-by would often remark about the “albino Japanese child” as he was very blond and stuck out from the crowd. By the time Gerry started school Japanese was his first language.

“The only time my dad spoke English while growing up was at home and at school.“ Ken Miller

He adds, “Every day after regular school he went with his friends to Japanese school to learn how to read and write Japanese.” Gerry shared recollections of growing up in Steveston in the book Changing Tides: Vanishing Voices of Nikkei Fishermen and Their Families. It was an honour to be included as Gerry was not a Nikkei fisherman, however he maintained a treasured relationship with the Japanese-Canadian fishing community. Throughout

his

life

he

impressed

and

surprised people with his ability to speak Japanese. He felt extremely grateful to his childhood friends who enriched his life and enabled him to enjoy two cultures. When World War II began Gerry was 13 years old. In an emotional passage he recalls the beginning of the Japanese internment when Japanese-Canadians were ordered from their Steveston homes. “Every day there would be more of my friends sent away. I would ride down to Steveston and watch them get on the train, then I would race along Moncton Street and up Railway Avenue on my bicycle, shouting at them back and forth till I could go no further.” In the mid-1940s Gerry Miller began fishing in a rental boat from B.C. Packers and bought his own boat a few years later. After a few years of gill netting he quit and was hired to work on a halibut boat out of Prince Rupert. Following the war he went fish packing and eventually became a shore mechanic at Good Hope camp in Rivers Inlet. This is where he met his wife Rosemary. They married in 1953.

9

His dad became manager for B.C. Packers in the 1970s. After a year at UBC Ken missed the fishing industry and decided to join Trites Marine in the boat repair division. He worked his way up to charge hand of the fibreglass workers and carpenters. In the summer months he ran salmon packers, which collect fish from the fish boats and bring them back to the fish plants so fishermen can stay out on the water. In 1988 B.C. Packers moved Ken into management at their satellite office at Annieville in Delta. He managed the gillnet fishermen and oversaw hundreds of boats. When his father retired from B.C. Packers in 1990, Ken was asked to relocate to the head office on Moncton Street. Ken was born in Bella Bella near where the family spent their summers. He was very young when he climbed aboard his first fishing boat, and says, “It was all I ever knew." The rest of the year was spent at home in Richmond. In the 1950s through the 1960s his father was the manager of Britannia Shipyard, which was still in operation. Ken has fond memories of growing up. He remembers his father building him a go-cart with a lawn mower engine, which he would race along Steveston’s waterfront boardwalk. He says with a smile, “I would go faster than I should have."

Like his father, Ken began working in fishing related businesses at an early age. He remembers his first job as a teenager working in a fishing store in Alert Bay. 10

Gerry’s retirement party was a big event attended by one hundred Japanese-Canadian fishermen who presented him with an oil painting of Steveston in thanks for many years of help and friendship. Part of Ken’s new job as fleet manager was fish spotting from the company’s 185 Cessna airplane from Vancouver to Prince Rupert. The pilot would fly over the ocean and Ken would spot schools of herring and report their location to fishermen. He had many close calls, including a hair-raising tale of a mid-air collision. He reports, “Nothing kept us grounded. We would fly through gales and snowstorms. It was nuts.”

During one particular flight another Cessna clipped them at 500 feet. With good fortune, despite severe damage, both planes managed to land safely. Ken says, “Although I still felt a little rattled, the next day we hired a new plane and were up in the air again spotting.” When B.C. Packers was sold in 1999 Ken worked for Canfisco on Vancouver’s eastside; after the company downsized he moved into a brief career in real estate. In 2008 the fishing industry lured Ken back

when American company Pacific Seafood approached him with an offer. The company was looking for a Canadian fleet manager to oversee their Canadian hake and ground fish trawl fleet. Ken now works from his home based office in Steveston that offers a terrific view of the fishing boats along the Fraser River.

“I am very lucky to have been able to live, work and raise my sons in this great community.” Ken Miller He has witnessed Steveston go through many changes over the years. He points out, “Yes, Steveston has evolved from a cannery town to more of a trendy village, and that’s ok as long as the fishing industry presence is maintained. Fish boats and fishermen are part of what makes Steveston unique.”

11

He loves living within proximity of many great dining spots. He enjoys The Porthole, Steveston’s new wine bar, which he feels is a great addition to the community. Along the same nautical theme, he regularly joins friends at the Blue Canoe Waterfront Restaurant. “I still have close friends from my childhood in the village and many others from years in the fishing industry,“ says Ken. He adds, “Although being in the fishing industry sometimes means months away

12

from home, I have no regrets. It has been a rewarding career. As I near retirement I reflect on how lucky I have been to follow my father’s footsteps in this interesting and often exciting career.” Ken concludes, “I sometimes visit Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site to see my father’s pictures there and I hear my father’s voice as it narrates one of the many slide shows in one of the small houses and childhood memories flood back to me.”

The Porthole

Steveston's Hidden Gem Story by Sarah Gordon

Photos by Sandra Steier

Raise your wineglass if you have dreamt of a wine bar in the heart of Steveston village with an ambience that makes you feel like you are in Paris, London, Madrid or Rome. This is exactly what owners Sascha Kuypers and David Silva thought was missing in the community they have called home for nine years. The pair have travelled extensively in Europe and lived in London. They admit they are foodies and know a lot about wine. Both David and Sascha studied wine at the International Sommelier Guild, while Sascha took additional courses at the Wine and Spirits Education Trust. She also worked for several years at a fine wine store. They are aware many Stevestonites are looking for a cosmopolitan experience close to home. The couple’s vision was to create an atmosphere that would be reminiscent of

20

wine bars they enjoyed in Europe, and offer locals an opportunity to walk or drive a short distance to The Porthole. Tucked off of No. 1 Road near Heringers, The Porthole opened in early April. It is located in the former home of The Market at Papi’s.

“We live here, work here, eat here, our kids go to school here.” David Silva Transforming the space required a major renovation and David and Sascha were active participants. The Porthole’s social media sites chronicle the journey, from major floor work required to install a washroom (complete with its very own skylight) to tiling, painting and construction of the bar.

The result is aesthetically pleasing. An intimate atmosphere is created through design choices that include charcoal grey walls, white subway tiles and industrial pendant lighting hung over tables, along with a coveted window seat couch, which is a popular spot to sit. Wooden boxes behind the bar display some of the featured wines and interspersed among the shelving is nautical decor – all objects have stories behind them. Female customers notice and enjoy the absence of televisions in the wine bar.

Cleverly named, The Porthole ties in Steveston’s maritime location and also subtly references one of the beverages you will find on the drink list. The Porthole offers wine on tap. David comments, “Our wines on tap ensure the wine is always at its peak. Customers can also be assured that they won’t be drinking any wines that have gone off from sitting on the shelf. We also have wines for sale by the bottle too.”

Sascha says, “We won’t carry the big brands. Our focus will be on small, boutique wineries where the winemaker is heavily involved in all aspects of growing and production.” She adds, “Our wine list is growing all the time. We will have more wines from France, Spain, Portugal and Italy, as well as from Oregon and California.”

“The Porthole is casual, eclectic, artsy, with a dose of whimsy. We’ve had many repeat customers already – all locals – which is a good sign.” Sascha Kuypers

21

Customer feedback has been extremely positive. The wine bar has been compared to being in Italy, a compliment that is music to David and Sascha’s ears. People are impressed with the great selection of wine by the glass or bottle. One customer says, “They certainly know their wine and craft beer too. The bits and bites are high quality, artfully plated and delicious.”

22

The Porthole’s cook, Andreas Ohrt, has worked in the industry for several years. Sascha says, “We specialize in many classic tapas such as almogrote gomero (a Spanish manchego and tomato dip), to fun share plates such as gribiche with sardines, charcuterie plates, and labneh with za’atar spiced flat bread.”

Some recipes come from David’s Portuguese grandmother, Rosa, who passed away many years ago. “Her piri-piri chicken was the best. But mine’s pretty good too,” David reports. The owners take pride in the relaxed vibe The Porthole offers up. David says, “There’s no attitude. We aren’t wine snobs. Everyone should feel welcome to try a wine without feeling they have to pronounce the name correctly.” He concludes, “This is for the locals. We want to be heavily involved in the community.

We are very community oriented and plan to participate in local events and charity drives.” While the exterior signage is being completed, look for the mermaid logo (designed by Sascha) on The Porthole’s street side sandwich boards that will direct you to Steveston’s new hidden gem. A taste of Europe awaits you. The Porthole 130-12251 No. 1 Road Richmond, BC V7E 1T6 Telephone 604-447-6696

“We’re delighted to be bringing these entertaining and informative stories back to the streets of Steveston this year. Tours sold out last summer, so be sure to catch this unique show while you can!” says Linda Barnes - Chair, Steveston Historical Society. The “pop-up” plays are performed by costumed student actors from Hugh McRoberts Secondary School. Their fun and engaging characters bring a fresh and vibrant interpretation of the past. A WALKING TOUR OF STEVESTON A PLAY IN FIVE PARTS

www.historicsteveston.ca/tours romantic down-on-his-luck young man, deal with his unemployment when there’s no salmon after the 1914 Hell's Gate landslide? What impact will the World War I draft have on the women in the close-knit community? Watch these stories intersect as you travel along the one hour, wheelchair accessible route, before waving the performers farewell at the newly restored Interurban Tram Car. Steveston’s history tells a bigger Canadian story of a multicultural community confronting issues of tolerance, perseverance through hardship, and pride in its accomplishments. Local playwright Andrew Wade has written these five vignettes to reflect these qualities and demonstrate that the issues that were present a hundred years ago are still relevant today. “I am always fascinated by how a community chooses to solve its problems,

be they natural, political, cultural, or interpersonal. It’s those choices that give a community its character,” he says. Tickets are $10 each. Children 12 & under are free when accompanied by a paying adult. Tours leave from Steveston Museum’s Town Square Park (3811 Moncton Street) at 1pm and 3pm every Saturday in June and July 2018. Pre-booking is essential and can be done online at www.historicsteveston.ca/ tours. The Steveston Alive! Walking Tour Vignettes production is made possible through the generous support of the G&F Financial Group Foundation and the City of Richmond. A special thanks to Hugh McRoberts Secondary School for their continued involvement in this initiative.

STEVESTON SALMON FESTIVAL Bursting With National Pride Story by Sarah Gordon Canada Day is one of Steveston’s most anticipated days of the year. It’s a day to wear red and white, slap on some sunscreen and head into the village to join 80,000 of your closest friends and neighbours for a day of celebration at the Steveston Salmon Festival.

This year some exciting changes are in store and established favourites remain. Pass the syrup, please! Served hot off the griddle from 6:30 to 11:30 a.m., the Pancake Breakfast can now be found in the southeast corner of the playground. “I Love a Parade!” The kids’ bike parade begins at 9:30 a.m. Pre-registration is not required, just show up before 9:30 a.m. with your decorated bikes, wagons, scooters, skateboards or rollerblades, and be prepared to have a lot of fun. Helmets are mandatory and a responsible adult must accompany all children. The big Canada Day parade starts at 10:00 a.m. and this event is synonymous with the festival. Find a good spot to cheer on participants and wave your Canadian flag. The Festival’s administrative coordinator Janice Froese says, “We don’t want to give away all of the surprises,” but she can reveal mascots, politicians, celebrities, community groups and vintage cars will be joined by marching bands, more floats and Sammy the Salmon will proudly lead Steveston Community Society’s float. You may even spot some mermaids and mermen. The parking lot across the street from the Steveston Community Centre is the festival’s hub; this is the home of the Mainstage, food trucks and a licensed area hosted by Fuggles & Warlock Craftworks. QM/FM morning radio host Drew Savage is this year’s emcee. Opening ceremonies commence at noon with speeches by dignitaries, and the singing of "O Canada" followed by an afternoon of great entertainment including iconic Canadian rock band Honeymoon Suite, who will take the stage at 5:00pm.

Like many Canadians, Janice confesses, “My heart swells on July 1 when people show their national pride.” People are encouraged to walk, take transit or cycle to the event. This year free bike and stroller valet service is being offered in front of the Community Police Station.

40

www.StevestonSalmonFest.ca

Both the festival and the crowds have grown over the last 10 years, and as a result, the popular (and often crowded) Children’s Festival has relocated from the Steveston playground to the baseball field behind the Community Police Station. This change allows for extra room to browse exhibitors’ booths, and unites an inflatable carnival and games with children’s entertainment in one kidfriendly location. Janice says with a laugh, “Home plate will be like a kiddie mosh pit.” The park is sure to be filled with fans singing along with Charlotte Diamond and the Hug Bug Band. A gymnastic performance by Gymnaestrada, musician duo Pancho & Sal, Richmond Youth Honour Choir, Angela Brown the “Ta Daa Lady” and award winning juggler Matt Henry “Trained Human” will also take the stage.

Families can now enjoy Steveston playground as a space for picnics and playtime. Calling all car buffs – the Richmond Lions Club once again hosts a car show. As many as 50 custom cars, classic cars, hot rods and uniquely decorated art cars will be on display on the east lawn adjacent to the baseball diamond.

What would the salmon festival be without Canfisco’s salmon barbecue grilled over open fire pits? Over 3,000 plates are sold each year! The barbecue can be found in front of the community garden in Steveston Community Centre’s parking lot. Each plate of salmon includes a beverage to save having to line up a second time. The Japanese-style chow mein also has a huge following. “People come for the salmon or chow mein,” says Janice. A wide variety of food and beverages can also be found at the outdoor food fair. If you are craving shelter from the sun and some dessert, head inside Steveston Community Centre where vendor Sweet Thea’s pie and ice cream are sold. When the Mainstage performances conclude at 7:00 p.m. it’s time to start thinking about strolling up to the waterfront to claim a spot to watch the City of Richmond’s fireworks at sunset. Perhaps buy food from one of the food trucks before they depart and bring it along for an evening picnic, or dine at one of Steveston’s many wonderful restaurants.

Do you enjoy visiting the festival’s Trade Show? This year you can look forward to a new demo stage.

Organized by the Richmond Agricultural and Industrial Society since 1945, hundreds of volunteers and generous sponsors join forces to make the Steveston Salmon Festival possible each year. Thank you one and all.

Other highlights include the Japanese Cultural Show, Horticultural Show, Youth Festival, Martial Arts Demonstrations and an Artisan Gallery.

On the following pages you will find full festival details. Enjoy celebrating Canada’s 151st birthday!

Helmets are mandatory for all riders and skaters. Participants are requested to not cycle back along the route after completing the bike parade as the main parade follows immediately afterwards and this creates a safety concern. Sponsored by the G&F Financial Group, this is an exciting opportunity for children to show their Canadian pride and cycle the big parade route to the cheers and encouragement of the waiting crowds before the floats take off! Children interested in entering the bike parade should bring their decorated bikes, trikes and wagons to the Gulf of Georgia Cannery parking lot at the corner of Chatham and Fourth Avenue beginning at 8:30am and no later than 9:15am. They will cycle off at 9:30am sharp. Pre-parade fun includes a special participation ribbon and treats for the kids as they wait for the parade marshals to send them off. The bike parade travels down Third Avenue then east on Moncton Street to the Community Police Station.
