Publisher’s Note Glorious summer, one of the most anticipated seasons, has arrived! With the warm weather comes tourists. We welcome you to this community that we are proud to call home! Many Stevestonites choose not to venture far from here in order to take advantage of the great events and beautiful weather. June kicks off with an event called Doors Open Richmond celebrating arts, culture and heritage. Steveston Village has six sites offering everything from major exhibit openings to special behind-the-scenes museum tours. Read all the details inside. Car enthusiasts can take in to two shows in June, the Sockeye Run Car Show and Shine in Steveston Park and the Vintage Car Display at London Heritage Farm. At the end of June is the Steveston Wine Fest at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery. The school year is drawing to a conclusion and children are looking forward to swimming in the Steveston Outdoor Pool and running through the waterpark. We congratulate Pajo's on their 30 year anniversary. Although Steveston is known for ice cream and fish and chips, there is so much more including bike riding, kite flying, fishing, boat rides, picnics and patio time. The Steveston Farmers Market takes over Third Avenue at Moncton Street every second Sunday with a bountiful mix of fresh produce and locally made products. Live outdoor music attracts audiences at our heritage sites.

The biggest event of all, the Steveston Salmon Festival, attracts close to 100,000 people. Each year crowds gather to celebrate Canada’s birthday, and we extend a happy 70th anniversary to the Salmon Festival. Learn about about what to expect this year on pages 32-37. Once again Ships to Shore will be part of the celebration with ships docked for viewing at Imperial Landing and Britannia Shipyards. In this issue we feature two great summertime businesses, Village Bikes and The Crab King. Brett Martyniuk, the owner of Village Bikes, is a fourth generation Steveston merchant. He is happy to set you up with a bike rental, or help you choose a new bike to purchase to enjoy Richmond’s flatland trails. The Crab King, a floating restaurant located at Fisherman's Wharf, is known for its delicious fresh from the sea crab dishes (including crab poutine). Enjoy the sunny weather, the local shopping and dining, and be sure to check out some of the summer events that make Steveston such a popular hot spot!

Further east along the Fraser River on Dyke Road at picturesque London Heritage Farm, tour 1890s period themed rooms depicting pioneer life in Richmond. Stroll through the park and see gardens, the hand tool museum and, of course, everyone’s favourite London Farm chickens. Then between noon and 5:00 p.m. drop in for a delicious tea in the Tea Room. Toward the west end of the village, the Gulf of Georgia National Historic Site will be hosting a special “Under the Rafters: A Behind-the-Scenes Tour” of the Cannery. Join this exclusive tour of the usually hidden spaces storing artefacts and more that make up the Gulf of Georgia. Pre-register for these tours by calling 604-664-9009 or emailing annika.penner@pc.gc.ca. While these tours are free, normal admission prices apply for general public access to the Cannery building. Experience a rare opportunity to visit a working farm at the Steves Family Farmhouse on Steveston Highway that has been in the Steves family since 1877. You will be able to tour parts of the house and view a large collection of artwork and historical objects. Antique farm equipment and heirloom seed gardens will be on display outside. For culture enthusiasts, the Steveston Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre next to the Steveston Community Centre will be offering displays, demonstrations, presentations and interactive activities about Steveston’s Japanese Community. More Japanese culture is on display at the Steveston Buddhist Temple on Garry Street where you can discover the rich history of the oldest standing Buddhist Temple in the Lower Mainland. The Temple has been a part of the Steveston community for over 80 years and will offer site tours. There will also be a number of workshops throughout the weekend including Introduction to Buddhism at 1:00 pm on both days. For art lovers, painter and teacher Adrienne Moore is opening her private home studio on Chatham Street where you can view her works that range from local landscapes to abstract expressionism. Finally, there is the Steveston Fire Station at No. 2 Road and Steveston Highway. Always June - July 2015

popular with kids of all ages, throughout the Doors Open weekend there will be tours of the station and their 27-foot fire education trailer. Who doesn’t love seeing a fire truck up close? Most of these sites are within easy walking distance of Steveston Village. For people who like to stretch their legs, Walk Richmond is offering a walking tour on Saturday, June 6 at 10:00 a.m. Walk Richmond leaders will start the leisurely group walk at Britannia Shipyards before taking participants along the Fraser River to London Heritage Farm. If you’re interested, meet under the big alder tree near the Murakami Garden in the centre of the Britannia Shipyards site just before starting time. No registration is required. For those who would prefer to explore the Steveston waterfront by boat, on Sunday, June 7, climb aboard the River Queen operated by Vancouver Whale Watch for a fully narrated nature and history tour of Steveston’s waterfront. The River Queen will be docking at three stops throughout the day: Fisherman’s Wharf on the Second Avenue Float near Vancouver Whale Watch, Third Avenue Pier near the Gulf of Georgia Cannery and at the Britannia Shipyards Dock. You can hop on and hop off to explore each site. One way tickets are $6 for adults, $5 for students and seniors and $4 for children aged 4-12. Children younger than four are free. The Crab King:

From the Ocean to Your Table Story by Sarah Gordon

Photos by Sandra Steier

Amongst Steveston Harbour’s fishing boats you will find The Crab King, a floating restaurant offering an up close and personal encounter with Canada’s largest commercial fishing fleet. Being level with the water offers a unique dining experience unlike any other restaurant in the area.

The business opened in 2011. It was originally an open-air concept; however, the limitations of rain and wind necessitated enclosing the space, allowing customers to dine inside. Once a roof and walls were incorporated this also gave Van an opportunity to apply for a liquor license.

Here you will have a first hand look at vessels returning with their haul, and you may even catch fisherman Ha Dinh (father of Van Dinh, The Crab King’s owner and chef) unloading his freshly caught Dungeness crabs from his boat, the Hai Phong. It doesn’t get fresher than this. In fact, Van reports this is one of the standout features of his business.

In 1988 the Dinh family fled their homeland, Vietnam. After a short spell in Hong Kong they made their way to Canada. They called Toronto home for a few years but ended up relocating to the west coast where Ha Dinh worked as a fisherman in Tofino. Van began fishing with his father at an early age, but he did not follow his father’s career path and instead became an air conditioning mechanic.

The Crab King takes great pride in delivering crabs directly “from the ocean to your table.”

8

It was during a visit to a Seattle restaurant, which specializes in crab, that Van’s concept of The Crab King was born. He realized the Lower Mainland sorely lacked such a business and with his lifelong knowledge he could

June - July 2015

www.StevestonInsider.com

offer Steveston a fresh off the boat dining experience bar none. Crab season is regulated to avoid over fishing, therefore the crustacean appears on the menu between late June through to the end of November when the business closes temporarily for the season (and reopens in early spring). Only the most robust crabs meet Van’s strict quality control and the daily catch is stored in a live tank at the restaurant’s entrance. Van points out, “Crab does not taste the same if it has been frozen. I am an expert, and know the difference in taste as I have been eating it my entire life.”

The Crab King prepares this delicacy in a variety of ways, steamed and accompanied with a number of sauces including black bean, ginger, garlic butter or Thai chili. Corn, potatoes and coleslaw accompany the entrée. Crackers, bibs and baby forks are provided. If you are not experienced at cracking open a crab don’t let this deter you from this delectable meal. Van and his staff are happy to offer tips to make you an expert in no time. In addition to crab fresh from the shell, crab poutine is one of The Crab Kings’ most popular choices. Rounding out the menu are pasta dishes, pan-fried fish, fish and chips (again, the fish is fresh off the boat), calamari, crab cakes, salads and even a prime rib burger.

Van says, “Steveston is a very friendly and receptive community to run a business. I like working here. It has a small hometown feeling.” June - July 2015

It is personal connections that mean the most to him. He explains, “Every person I meet has a story to tell. Talking to people is knowledge. Through conversations you can learn so much – it is mesmerizing.” When opening The Crab King his ultimate goal was to “put smiles on peoples’ faces.” Van believes, “People work so hard, some of them struggle, and the least I can do is give them a meal they will really enjoy.”

confirms that Van is indeed actively involved with his customers as he appears alongside them in many photographs. He enjoys the reward of serving people and assisting them as needed. If someone needs help walking up the ramp or opening a door, Van is there. He says, “It doesn’t cost me anything to offer this kindness – and it makes me feel good.” At the end of a meal the most gratifying feedback Van likes to hear is, “That was delicious.” He concludes, “I like to see people happy, and food is one way of doing this.”

The Elephant in the Room: A Discussion About Best Practices Story by Sean Lawson There is an elephant in the room, namely the Imperial Landing waterfront site, as the lower level of the development remains empty and its fate is unresolved. I think it is fair to say that having the Imperial Landing waterfront occupied would be better than its current “ghost town” condition, but the implications of exactly how this occurs will impact many and shape our village experience for years to come. The site is currently zoned Maritime Mixed Use (MMU). This zone would allow marine hardware and electronics, the manufacturing and repair of sails and canvas, marine surveyors, lawyers, insurance brokers and architects, marine related subtrades like plumbers and electricians, rigging shops, kayak, canoe and dingy retailers, etc. As an example, think of all the vibrant water-related operations observed on Granville Island. The intent of this zone was to support Steveston’s historic commercial fishing industry and maritime economy by providing appropriate space and opportunity. 18

The MMU zone was granted and accepted during the original rezoning of the 43 acre Imperial Landing site as a form of “community contribution,” much like a typical townhouse project must build a playground on-site as part of their requirements. In consideration, in part, of the MMU-zoned waterfront parcel, the developer was awarded a very diverse zoning mix for the balance of the site. This included the ability to build commercial retail units (Starbucks, etc.), seven fourstorey apartment buildings, three townhouse subdivisions, and single family homes on Easthope and Ewen Avenues, Bayview Street, and Gerrard Place. In addition, there were no affordable housing or childcare conditions imposed on this development in lieu of the MMU “contribution.” The City of Richmond is working on a plan for a pleasure craft marina in front of this site. Councilor Harold Steves has stated that it is his determined goal to make this happen over the next few years. This would be incredibly beneficial as the Steveston Harbour Authority reports they currently have 265 people on a

June - July 2015

www.StevestonInsider.com

waiting list to obtain moorage in Steveston. Depending on the size of their boat, when applicants call to apply, they are told that the average wait time is five to ten years for a moorage spot. The boater currently at the top of the waiting list thought moorage was imminent and put his name down in 2003. That’s a 12-year wait! With this type of demand, a marina would be a huge overnight success. After carefully considering the above, the Steveston Merchants Association (SMA) has put forward a very reasonable, well balanced, and thought-out proposal for the site. Their vision includes the east portion, approximately one third of the site, being rezoned to allow for office space, the middle third would remain MMU and provide services to the proposed marina located directly in front of its doors and the west third would be zoned to allow for retail use. This proposal would be a huge win for the developer as MMU space would lease for $18-$20 per square foot, office space for $20-$25 per square foot, and retail rates could be as high as $40 per square foot (approximations based on current market base rents of triple net leases in the area). This proposal would preserve the traditional village shopping experience by keeping retail uses and shoppers at the west end of the site, close to the heart of the business district, and not drawing shoppers east into a more residential neighbourhood away from the historic village centre. Parking your car in Steveston can be extremely frustrating, with spots at a premium during the busy summer season and year-round on weekends. Lots and lanes throughout the village are already at capacity, with visitor parking reaching neighbourhood residential streets. The office and MMU uses would likely

June - July 2015

not operate into the evenings and weekends, thus leaving pay parking options open. This alone would go a long way to helping our parking problems. In addition, employees of the office and MMU spaces would frequent the village shops and restaurants, adding to the economic viability and vibrancy of the existing village businesses. I feel if 60,000 square feet of retail space were dumped, seemingly overnight, on the market in Steveston, it would set back the redevelopment of the existing village core by a decade and move the main shopping experience from the traditional core, to which Steveston owes much of its charm, and over to the eastern waterfront. Would this be fair to all the restaurant and shop owners who have made investment decisions through lease or ownership arrangements, including significant investments of time and capital to improvements of these spaces, based on a set of well-established Official Community Plan rules and guidelines? Just over a year ago, the developer was referred back to city staff for further consultation at a planning committee meeting. There have been talks about moving the Steveston Library from the community centre to a portion of the Bayview site, which I think is a fantastic idea, but my understanding is that they have been unable to come to an agreement. There currently is no scheduled return visit to the planning committee for this rezoning application and the site remains in limbo. This current state benefits no one. A balanced approach, like the Steveston Merchants Association proposal, will give local residents some of the retail options they covet while enhancing the historic village shopping experience that has made Steveston such a wonderful place to live, work, and visit.

Record-Breaking Spring Market

After an unbelievable spring market, the Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver has reported a sales-to-active-listings ratio in April of 33.6%. This is the highest that this ratio has been in Metro Vancouver since June 2007 and indicates a Seller’s market during which home buyer demand outpaces the available supply of housing. What are the effects of a Seller’s market? The total number of active listings is down nearly 20% while demand has simultaneously increased. This puts upward pressure on prices which have increased by a hefty 8.5% in April alone with sales 29% above the 10-year sales average for the month. Strong home buyer demand coupled with below average home listing activity has created Seller’s market conditions within the Metro Vancouver housing market, and Richmond is no exception - I’ve sold over 40 homes in the first five months of this year! If you’ve been thinking about listing your property for sale, don’t delay. These conditions create ideal circumstances in which to sell your home and I’d love the opportunity to prepare a Comparative Market Analysis for your property and discuss the process with you.

Running with Russel If you are looking to hit the streets running this summer, consider this before you do. Time and time again recreational runners coming limping in to RSF complaining of nagging injuries to their knees, ankles, hips and lower back to name a few. The average runner takes approximately 2,250 steps per kilometer, so if someone’s running stride is even moderately dysfunctional, that’s a lot of missteps one after another. It’s no wonder, then, that recent studies point to an injury of incidence of almost 80% in recreational runners. So if you plan on running to get fit this summer, make sure you are adequately prepared. Here is how you can help yourself stay injury-free. Try to do the following exercises at least as many times as you run each week: June - July 2015

1. Clamshell – two sets of 15-20 reps with each leg. Helps stabilize your hips when foot hits the ground. 2. Cook Bridge – two sets of 15 reps with each leg. Engaging gluteus muscles help hip drive and reduce stress to hamstrings. 3. Reverse Lunge Strides – three sets of 10 with each leg. Strengthens hips, knees, ankles and core. 4. Plank – three to five sets of 10 to 15 seconds When done correctly, this is all that is needed to increase overall strength and stability. 5. Foam Roll – 3 to 5 minutes. Reduces tension in muscles, increases blood flow and improves tissue quality. If you are not sure about proper technique for any of these exercises, watch my videos on RSF YouTube Channel. Give them a try. You’ll be on your way to being a stronger, healthier and better you.

Village Bikes:

Pedalling into Steveston's Future Story by Sarah Gordon Photos by Sandra Steier It is unlikely that any Steveston business owner other than Brett Martyniuk can claim to be a fourth generation Steveston merchant. The Martyniuk family planted roots in this community in the late 1930s when Brett’s great-grandfather Peter Martyniuk founded Steveston Barbers. He operated his shop in the same location that Village Bikes now calls home. Brett points out his great-grandfather cut hair in the front of the store and lived in the back of the building. His grandparents, Gabe and Marg Martyniuk, owned Island Cleaners for approximately forty years. It was situated in the space that now masquerades as the storefront “Any Given Sundae” on the television show Once Upon A Time. Brett’s parents Ray and Elaine Martyniuk founded and ran Cannery Row Cafe in the mid-1980s, and today his father is the owner and operator of Steveston Water Taxi.

It seems Brett was destined to follow his family’s entrepreneurial path. In May 2007, after sensing there was a demand for a local bicycle shop, he opened Village Bikes. The bike shop started off selling used bikes and providing repair services and after a short time introduced new bicycles. Norco, Giant and Linus are the primary brands carried, with a focus on families and urban cyclists. Brett points out if a customer is seeking a specific bike model he is more than happy to order it. Amongst the selection of children’s bikes the balance bike is a popular pick for toddlers. It

helps pave the way for their first big kid bike, while eliminating the need to progress to training wheels. Brett says, “Once balance is mastered, learning to pedal is a breeze.” The front section of the store stocks a variety of accessories to keep every cycling enthusiast happy. Stylish Linus wicker baskets are the perfect finishing touch to add to a cruiser and will help carry your farmers’ market goodies, or a beach towel and a picnic to your destination. Locks, lights and bells all help to personalize your bike.

the parent controlling the steering. In the back of the store Pierre Bertin competently manages the bike shop’s service department. Annual tune-ups are encouraged to ensure your vehicle is in good working order. Flat tire? With a quick fix and a minimal charge of $10, you will be back in the saddle again.

Nutcase is a fun and popular helmet out of Portland, Oregon. These “brain protectors” comes in a number of styles. Brett indicates the watermelon model is one of their bestsellers. The American made front mounted iBert Safe-T Seat perches little riders (ages 4 and younger) at the front of their parents’ bike. This allows children to take in the scenery around them rather than a rear-mounted seat where they view mum or dad’s back, and allows for easier communication. Another way to enjoy the experience of “a bicycle built for two” is by adding a tow bar between the child’s and parent’s bike, and presto, it becomes similar to a tandem, with June - July 2015

Steveston is a perfect place to cycle. Not only is it flat, but it also offers bike trails galore from kilometres of dike paths to the Railway Avenue corridor that has been embraced by cyclists and pedestrians alike. If you prefer riding on the road there are bike lanes integrated into Richmond’s streets to encourage this environmentally friendly mode of commuting.

Brett sees a steady stream of couples and families inquiring about his bike rental service. For $10 an hour (or $30 for a full day) a bike is at your disposal to discover the area. Armed with a free map, customers venture off to explore the dike trails, parks and historic sites. Brett is a proud local ambassador and encourages visitors to loop back to Steveston village for lunch where they will find some of the best restaurants in Richmond. “When I was growing up it seemed Steveston was a bit of a secret, not a lot of people from outside of Richmond knew where it was. That's definitely changed with more people moving to Steveston, Lower Mainlanders coming out for day trips and an increase in tourism.” When asked what he loves most about running his business Brett replies, “I enjoy building relationships within an awesome community.” Although he has taken a break from Steveston to live in Vancouver he does not dismiss the likelihood of returning to his stomping grounds, as he knows it is a great place to raise a family.

The epic two-day 200-kilometre journey to Seattle takes place on August 29-30, 2015. The Ride to Conquer Cancer is an annual charity fundraiser held in various locations across Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the United States. This event is particularly close to Brett’s heart as he lost his mother to cancer in 2013. “I'm looking forward to doing the ride with thousands of other people who've been affected by cancer in so many different ways.” The Village Bike team hopes to raise $5,000 through a combined effort of online fundraising (www.conquercancer.ca) and by donating a percentage of their spring bike tune-up revenue to the event. As for Brett’s personal training, his commute to Steveston from Vancouver by bike, combined with rides up Burnaby Mountain and through the University Endowment Lands is preparing him for the monumental journey ahead. And in true Steveston-style, his hometown will inevitably be cheering him on!

This summer Brett and Village Bikes shop manager Graeme Burns are first time participants in the Ride to Conquer Cancer, which benefits the B.C. Cancer Foundation. 26

The 70th annual

STEVESTON SALMON FESTIVAL Canada’s Biggest Little Birthday Party Since 1945!

Wednesday, July 1, 2015 The people of Steveston have come together every year since 1945 to celebrate Canada’s birthday and the rich heritage of our community. Thanks to the tireless efforts of hundreds of volunteers and the generous support of our sponsors, the Steveston Community Society organizes one of the largest non-profit Canada Day celebrations across the country! On average, over 70,000 people from across Richmond, Metro Vancouver and the Pacific Northwest spend Canada Day with us! The day begins at 10:00am with a parade through historic Steveston village, which features over 100 entries including floats, marching bands, celebrities, politicians, community groups, vintage vehicles & much more. Then, the Festival is officially kicked off at our Opening Ceremonies on the Main Stage at noon with dignitaries, speeches, & the singing of O Canada. After the official opening, the stage bursts with great entertainment all afternoon. Festival highlights include attractions such as the Japanese Cultural Show, Craft Fair, Trade Show, an awesome Children’s Festival, Martial Arts Demonstrations, Car Show, Youth Rock Fest, Food Fair plus an Art Show and Exhibit. The Steveston Salmon Festival invites you to visit the Net Shed building for a trip down memory lane as we feature photos, films and artifacts of Salmon Festivals over the decades since 1945! Kids can create their own unique fishy art and add it to the art-net. The main attraction is our famous salmon barbecue where over 1200 pounds of wild salmon filets are grilled over open fire pits. This popular treat sells out every year!

Whatever your age, whatever your interests, there is something for everyone at the Steveston Salmon Festival!
