February-March 2019

Publisher's Note Happy New Year! With mild temperatures in the forecast, it feels like spring is making an early appearance and all of the signs are here – I even spotted some very early daffodils today! There is so much to look forward to in February. The Dine Out Vancouver Festival runs until February 3 followed by Chinese New Year on February 5. Steveston’s boutiques are filled with great gift ideas for your Valentine, including chocolates, flowers, jewellery and cards. Plan a romantic dinner at any one of the village’s excellent and diverse restaurants. Family Day has officially moved to the third Monday in February, now in line with the other provinces. Steveston’s heritage sites are offering fun things to do for Family Day, especially with Heritage Week following. The days are getting visibly longer which allows for more time to be spent outdoors. Elementary and high school students (teachers and parents too!) are eagerly anticipating spring break, which takes place the last two weeks of March. Spring officially starts March 20. Easter is late this year, giving us another long weekend April 19.

about the “best little record store in the world,” and what makes Frankie a music expert. We also feature Steveston’s coffee spots. Everyone has their favourite café; sometimes it comes down to location, a place to sit, internet connection, the hours they are open or the goodies they serve. For others, only the coffee matters. More changes have come to the village as Adorabelle Tea Room and Golden Apple Farm Market have closed. We say goodbye to Pretty Things Florist & Designer Gifts as the shop is moving to a location behind Ironwood Plaza. Enjoy the mild weather, the longer days and remember to get out and support your local businesses.

Beatmerchant Record Store The Best Little Record Store in the World Story by Sarah Gordon

Photos by Sandra Steier

A visit to Steveston’s Beatmerchant Record Store feels like travelling back in time while still being anchored in the present. As I am writing, I am imagining songs that could

accompany this story, for it is music that greets you the moment you enter the “best little record store in the world,” along with the shop’s charming and welcoming owner, Frankie Neilson.

Frankie has always had a passion for music. He bought his first 45 by The Kinks when he was 11 years old. He got an early start in the music business. At age 17 Frankie began working as a recording engineer at the Marquee Studios in London. In 1974 he joined Dick James who founded the DJM record label and signed Elton John. Dick James and The Beatles’ manager Brian Epstein also founded The Beatles' music publishing company Northern Songs.

6

Frankie went on to work for Polydor Records, which signed artists such as Jimi Hendrix, Cream and Taste. While at Polydor, Frankie felt privileged to work with artists such as Paul Weller, The Jam, Ian Dury, Billy Fury and the Comsat Angels. In the 1980s Frankie branched out to start his own record label, Individual Records. He jokes, "The records released have become collectibles since nobody bought them!” After moving to Canada in 1990 he spent a few years in Toronto before relocating to Vancouver. He left the music industry behind and worked in Telus’ business department. Those were the early days of high speed internet. Frankie says, “I learned a lot about business and computers.” While still employed at Telus, Frankie began selling music online, which was the precursor to the Beatmerchant Record Store. The physical storefront came to be when he was cycling through Steveston and spotted a for lease sign; he opened the Second Avenue shop in October 2005. Initially, Frankie had two staff (Melissa and Rupert) working for him until he was able to leave his job and begin working at the record store. His long

time employee David shares a passion for music and has been working with Frankie for 10 years. Although Frankie left England 30 years ago his British accent remains strong which adds to the authenticity of his music shop with a slant towards British-themed music and merchandise. He started out selling cds and albums and subsequently added concert posters, coffee mugs, music books, T-shirts, hats and toques and U.K. soccer wear.

Customers frequently comment on how much they love the cozy shop. Approximately eight years ago vinyl records experienced a resurgence and are often favoured by listeners for their warm and pure studio sound. This renewed interest has been beneficial to Frankie’s business. As well, the recent hit movie “Bohemian Rhapsody” about Queen’s lead singer Freddie Mercury has introduced a new generation to “old music” and has inspired them to start exploring other classic bands.

7

of bobby sox and poodle skirted fans. In the 1950s Elvis Presley rocked and rolled his way into the hearts of screaming fans and introduced them to music nobody had ever heard before rooted in gospel, country and rhythm and blues. The British invasion began when The Beatles appeared on the Ed Sullivan show on February 9, 1964 and changed the landscape of music once again.

Frankie points out, “Music is for young people. It plays an important part in our youth and growing up. There is nothing better than seeing an exciting live concert with your mates and enjoying yourself. The music you love in your teens will stay with you for the rest of your life.” Music is inextricably linked with history and teenagers have always been a driving force in music trends. Frank Sinatra was an early teen icon in the 1940s with his loyal following

8

Commenting on The Beatles’ staying power, Frankie says, “The world has not been the same since, and rightly so. It seems that all generations including today’s youngsters love the mop tops and at Beatmerchant we sell more Beatles stuff than any other artist.” The store carries a great variety of genres ranging from blues to bluegrass, Celtic, classical, country, folk, heavy metal, hip hop, jazz, New Age, punk, rap, reggae, R&B, soul, soundtracks and world music.

One thing that makes this little shop unique is Frankie’s expertise.

Unlike the solitude of ordering an album online, Frankie can regale you with stories from the British music scene in the 1960s and 1970s, and you will leave having learnt something you did not know. Seeing album covers and posters may stir up memories of favourite concerts you attended or memorable songs as music has the wonderful power to do. It’s a nostalgic feeling that simply does not happen during an internet search. Beatmerchant Record Store has evolved over time and Frankie is always finding creative ways to keep his cozy shop a destination for music aficionados as well as for those who are curious to make new discoveries. He is happy to order in albums or cds and enjoys the thrill of tracking down a customer’s request. In addition, Frankie likes to stage mini outdoor concerts and book signings to attract people to his business. He says, “Downtime is needed in a record shop to browse.” He enjoys being able to offer this specialty business to our community that draws people from far and wide. One

of the biggest rewards for Frankie is hearing people’s stories. “I really enjoy introducing people to new music. It’s about sharing my knowledge and giving back,” he says. Frankie concludes, “This place is magical. I put my heart and soul into it. I enjoy making people happy.” Beatmerchant Record Store 12240 Second Avenue Richmond, BC V7E 3L8 Telephone 604-245-6834 www.beatmerchant.com

What will Spring bring?

In 2018 there was very low demand with high active inventory, causing downward pressure on prices and very low sales volume. The hope is that Spring 2019 will bring an increase in sales volume due to pent up demand from an extremely slow 2018. This will likely not be at higher prices though. 2019 could be a good time to purchase. It is in exactly these changing market conditions that having experienced professionals working for you is extremely important. Our comprehensive marketing program, dedicated sales team, retail presence with the Steveston office and presentation centre as well as our unprecedented local knowledge and buyer reach ensure that our clients will achieve enriching timely results in a professional atmosphere and fashion. Whether buying or selling residential, commercial or development property in Steveston or Richmond, I would love the opportunity to take care of your real estate needs. Let the team at RE/MAX Westcoast - Steveston Real Estate manage this important process for you!

Steveston's Coffee Spots Story by Sarah Gordon

Photos by Sandra Steier

There is no question Stevestonites and visitors to the community love a good cup of coffee. The village is brimming with coffee shops. One may be your tried and true hang out, or perhaps you prefer to explore each to compare and contrast. Whether you like to linger over a coffee or get one for the road or a walk along the dyke, below is a list of some of the popular spots to fuel up on coffee, other warm beverages, and baked goodies as a tasty accompaniment.

Blenz

Blenz got its start in 1992 in downtown Vancouver with a vision to offer customers premium drinks in a relaxed environment. It worked. Blenz has grown to over 60 locations across British Columbia, Japan and the Philippines. Steveston’s Blenz has many loyal customers who enjoy the small café’s intimate atmosphere. The owners report some people come in daily for their java fix. They also see a fair number of tourists. In addition to coffee, customers enjoy lattes and hot chocolate made with Belgian chocolate. Sweet treats include pastries, scones, muffins, almond croissants and date squares. Bonus: If you are a BCAA member present your card and Blenz will upsize your drink. Hours: Monday to Friday 7am – 8pm. Saturday & Sunday 7am – 9pm.

Rocanini Coffee Roasters

Rocanini Coffee Roasters sits at the unofficial gateway to Steveston village, at the corner of No. 1 Road and Moncton Street. This location opened in 2010 and subsequently spawned two other cafés in Kerrisdale and Yaletown. Rocanini’s coffee is brewed from beans roasted at their Vancouver roastery. Their special siphon coffee has been described as both scientific and theatrical and the production results in an amazing cup of coffee. In addition, Rocanini serves brewed coffee, espresso based coffee, lattes, hot chocolate, a selection of tea and juice as well as a collection of pastries, cakes, squares, wraps, sandwiches and more.

Choose to sit at the long communal table or at a private table. Enjoy viewing local art exhibits, which rotate every few months. Students and other customers appreciate the free WiFi as they work on their laptops while enjoying a cup of Joe. Hours: Daily 8am – 6pm

17

Starbucks

Starbucks needs no introduction. The Seattle born company (circa 1971) is the premier roaster and retailer of specialty coffee internationally. Today there are 15,000 stores in 50 countries. Enter any Starbucks and you will recognize the familiar aroma of freshly roasted beans. The lure of Starbucks propels many people out of bed in the morning. From Starbucks distinct French espresso roast to the classic Pike Place roast, blonde roast and everything in-between, fans know their preferred bean. You are off and running once you have

18

mastered the art of ordering your perfect brew. Seasonal drink and food menu items are frequently introduced. New to the drink menu is the cinnamon shortbread latte. Additional perks: Steveston’s Starbucks has outdoor patio heaters and is close to the waterfront. Rain or shine, you will always spot people on the patio enjoying a beverage and chatting with their friends. With that in mind, I would like a skinny caffè mocha, hold the whip, with a view of the south dyke to go, please! Hours: Monday to Friday 5:30am – 9pm Saturday & Sunday 6:30am – 9pm

sweet and savoury scones are also sold. Sanctuary Café is located in what Tim calls Steveston's "East Village." Close to London Landing’s scenic South Dyke Trail, it's a perfect place to visit when out for a bike ride or a walk. Hours: Tuesday – Friday 8am – 5pm Saturday & Sunday 8am – 3pm Monday closed

Steveston Coffee Co.

Sanctuary Café

Steveston’s newcomer to the coffee scene, Sanctuary Café opened in May 2018. Local owner Tim Lee’s vision was to combine his passion for cycling with his love of coffee. He wants to get people out of their cars and have them walk, run or cycle to his café in an unhurried fashion to enjoy coffee from a mug and in the process, help people live in the moment. If you love coffee, baked goods and a café steeped in character, this may become your favourite haunt. Sausage rolls, muffins, cookies, carrot cake, coconut Nanaimo bars,

Since 1997 Steveston Coffee Company has taken pride in their organic roasted beans which makes their coffee stand out. A feather in their cap, this little café was voted the best independent coffee shop in the Richmond News’ Best of Richmond (2018). Recently the focus has been on creating a lighter roast based on customers’ requests. New owners Grace and Roy Chen’s pervious experience working in bakeries and restaurants has inspired them to re-examine the menu. They bake cookies, muffins and loaves and create fresh sandwiches daily. On a warm day, grab a seat at one of the outdoor tables and watch the world go by. Hours: Monday to Saturday 8am - 5:30pm Sunday 8am - 5pm

19

Village Books & Coffee House

Village Books & Coffee House is a novel kind of store. It is one of the longest operating bookstores in Richmond (30 years and counting) that specializes in new, used and kids books. Owners Angela and Ron Hill incorporated a coffee bar and a few tables where customers can make themselves at home. So, pull up a chair and relax over coffee and a book – it’s a match made in heaven! Here you will find coffee and tea from Vancouver’s 49th Parallel Coffee Roasters, and Herbal Republic teas. The coffee is direct trade and the tea is living wage, which means that the relationships with the growers and pickers are strengthened through top wage and ethical practices. The owners always experiment with drinks and come up with some wonderful seasonal concoctions. As well, a range of bagels, muffins, pastries, and soup from local bakeries complement the coffee house’s beverages. Hours: Monday to Saturday 8am – 5pm. Sunday 10am – 5pm.

Waves

This Canadian company was founded in Vancouver in 2005. The wave has spread, and there are currently 34 locations across B.C. and Alberta.

Waves is Steveston’s most spacious coffee house and as a result it is not uncommon to see regular groups gather. If you drop in on a Tuesday morning you may spot a local knitting club with their needles busily clicking away as they sip beverages and socialize, or a running group may pop in for a post workout java. Waves’ menu features a variety of baked goods (the cookies and croissants are made in house), teas and specialty coffees. Tip: If you happen to visit on a Wednesday you can enjoy a free upsize to the larger Waves size coffee. Hours: Daily 7am – 12 midnight From small cafès with a handful of tables to larger establishments, if you’re in search of caffeine, there’s no question that coffee culture is alive and well in Steveston, and you won’t have any trouble finding an excellent jolt of java.

ASK A STEVESTON INSIDER RRSP or TFSA? Investing in a tax smart account is one of the best ways to grow your money faster. Both Registered Retirement Savings Plans (RRSPs) and Tax Free Savings Accounts (TFSAs) offer unique benefits. Here is a quick overview of each: RRSP • Save for retirement while reducing your income taxes. • Defer the taxes on your investment income and pay only when you withdrawal the money. • Borrow from yourself to buy your first home or pay for your or your spouse’s education. • You can hold a variety of investment products within the account. TFSA • Offers flexibility to save for anything. • Since you are using after-tax dollars to contribute, there is no taxation when you withdraw the money or on the investment income earned. • You have the best advantage if you can use this type of account for long-term savings and invest in something that will grow to meet your goal.

Tips For A Good Headshot Go professional

It is worth paying a professional who is trained, understands lighting, and takes headshots for a living, not some friend who happens to have a decent camera. Save those pictures for Instagram. Good headshots range from $250-$500.

Show your personality

Make sure the photo looks like you and is not overly photoshopped. People expect you to look just like your headshot and will be shocked when they meet you looking totally different, or 10 years older. It’s not about looking pretty, it’s about showing who you are, age wrinkles included, representing the business you are in. It should look like you on your best day, showing your age, and who you are now.

Lighting and background

A good headshot is chest-up with good lighting on your face, and no strong dramatic shadows. Look directly into the camera, and the focus should be on the centre of your eyes, not your left ear, or your shirt collar. The background should be clear or the photographer should blur it. It’s about you, not the environment.

Natural light vs. studio

Some photographers do both, as they offer a different look and feel. Natural light gives a very real look which is preferable. Studio lighting tends to be a little more polished, with a more neutral backdrop.

32

Clothing and props

Professionalism gets you noticed. Wear clothes that suit your business. Leave the logo shirts and super trendy tops at home. A simple, solid color shirt with a little texture that fits you well and matches your eyes should do the trick. No whites or blacks, no fluorescent or strong colours and nothing you think might distract from your face. And no props.

Makeup

Yes, lots can be done with retouching. There is no need to put on tons of makeup. You want to look like yourself on your best day, and not look like you tried too hard. Women should ask the photographer who they recommend for professional makeup as this type of artist will ensure the makeup is suitable for the headshot and not overdone. Men can bring some oil sheets to take down the shine, and maybe use a lightly tinted moisturizer to take out the redness and even your skin tone. The wrong makeup will ruin your headshot.

Photographer vibe

You have to vibe with the photographer, and that person has to make you feel very comfortable, as you will be using this headshot for a couple of years on your website and all your advertising. Check out the photographer’s other headshots and see if you like their style. And most importantly, don’t cut corners.

PROFESSIONAL HEADSHOTS Your face is your business and your brand. That’s why it’s important to have a professional headshot every two years. Office group rates available. In studio or on location. Contact Sandra Steier to book your new headshot.
