Publisher's Note Hello spring! The Easter long weekend is behind us, and we look forward to everything else this special season has to offer. The Cannery Farmers’ Market's season concludes on April 22, but there is plenty of farmers’ market shopping yet to come! Read about the Steveston Farmers & Artisans Market 10th anniversary season commencing Sunday, May 6. Steveston Rotary Club is busy planning the 17th Annual Grapes, Hops & Bites Festival at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery on May 11 with all proceeds going to the Rotary’s community projects. Other upcoming special spring events include the Cherry Blossom Festival at Garry Point Park, London Heritage Farm’s annual plant sale, Mother’s Day and the Victoria Day long weekend which signals the opening of the Steveston Outdoor Pool and spray park. We are thrilled to report that the post office will be remaining open for business in the historic Steveston Museum. We have all the details inside about the 11th annual Doors Open Richmond in early June. This is a city-wide event that explores the walkable hub of fascinating sites clustered around Steveston’s beautiful waterfront village. Other anticipated events are in the works such as Steveston Sockeye Run Car Show and Shine, Steveston Wine Fest, Bullhead Derby and the Steveston Salmon Festival.

Our cover story features Dr. Maureen Piché, a well-liked dentist who owns and operates Harmony Dental Studio on Moncton Street. We introduce you to one of the village’s newer businesses, Steveston’s Best of British, a collaboration between Lenny Entwistle and Elly Fenton, who remarkably already run three other local businesses. As a small community it is always emotional to hear news stories that impact local businesses. Little Mexico Cantina and Mega Sushi were damaged by fire in March. We wish these restaurants well as they undergo restoration and prepare to reopen. Spring is a gift, from its sweet floral fragrances, to sitting in the sun, popping open windows, witnessing flowers pushing through the soil, hearing bird songs, and yes, even mowing the lawn has a certain novelty after a wet winter. Take it all in!

Harmony Dental Studio: Taking Care of the Community Story by Sarah Gordon

Photos by Sandra Steier

Like many Steveston businesses, Harmony Dental Studio is housed in a building steeped in history. The Atagi building survived the Steveston fire of 1918. It operated as a general store under the ownership of Tokumatsu Atagi until the late 1930s. In the decades that followed the building was used as a theatre and as a commercial fishing shop (Redden Net Company). In 2010, after an extensive and tasteful renovation, it became the home of Harmony Dental Studio. Dr. Maureen Piché is the friendly and caring dentist who owns and operates Harmony Dental Studio. Her first-born child was nine months old when she opened the doors. She says, “I’ve never regretted the decision, although it was certainly a challenge. Life has thrown me this and other opportunities that I am grateful for. Take a breath and jump!” Before establishing her practice, Dr. Piché worked as an associate dentist in White Rock

8

and Surrey, instructed at Vancouver College of Dental Hygiene and served as a locum in an Orthodontic practice. Her educational background includes an HBSc Degree in Biology from Lakehead University and a DMD from University of British Columbia. During her late teenage years Dr. Piché’s interest in science made health care a natural choice and her gift for small detailed work played a role in choosing dentistry. She explains, “I chose this career to bring my passion for quality, comfortable dental care to my profession.” Dr. Piché is fascinated by biology and evolution and uses her scientific knowledge to benefit her patients. As an example, she has an interest in sleep-disordered breathing (including sleep apnea) and says, “When you fix the teeth you treat the underlying issue. Dental care is not an afterthought to wellness, it is an integral piece of the puzzle.”

April - May 2018

www.StevestonInsider.com

General dentistry services include exams, cleanings, fillings, crowns, bridges, partial dentures, extractions, root canals and other minor surgery. In addition, a niche area of Dr. Piché’s practice is aesthetic and reconstructive dentistry. She had work done on her own teeth as a teenager and loves this end of the job, which she describes as “a huge confidence booster for my patients.”

Dr. Piché has a knack for putting people at ease. Her busy practice sees a steady flow of clients of all ages. She encourages parents to bring their infants in by the one-year mark. Coming in at an early age is important so little ones feel comfortable visiting the dentist before a problem arises. Parents also benefit from these visits where they can ask questions and seek advice to lay the groundwork for proper dental care at home. There is also a wonderful treasure chest to choose from post-appointment! Harmony Dental Studio does not turn on the answering machine after hours and direct you to go to the hospital in case of an emergency.

April - May 2018

“I have been here in the middle of the night dealing with emergencies. That is my job as a health care provider.” Dr. Piché Dr. Piché is excited by new technological advances in her field, which are coming fast and furiously. She uses state of the art dental equipment including a full colour 3D intraoral scanner, which is like a video camera, creating a digital replica of teeth and gums. It enables patients to view their mouth the same way as Dr. Piché. She uses the file to make crowns, veneers, night guards and orthodontics without having to take impressions. Fear and anxiety keep some patients from having dental treatment. Advances in dentistry have made it easier on patients but that doesn’t erase bad past experiences. Many patients will avoid check ups all together and are embarrassed about having neglected their teeth. This is very common and it is nothing to be embarrassed about. There are options available such as oral sedation to help ease anxiety if this is a problem.

Harmony Dental Studio is a latex free environment; Dr. Piché has an allergy to latex and understands. As well, she takes into account that some patients have sensitivity to materials such as mercury and chooses to offer other alternatives. She explains, “If you have a specific concern or sensitivity our consultation process will help work out what will work out best for the long term health of your mouth and body.” Orthodontic treatment is also available from Dr. Matthew Witt. Dr. Witt has his own practice in Ladner and works part-time out of Harmony Dental Studio. He treats both children and adults needing braces and/or other appliances to straighten teeth and jaws.

“My family and the practice have grown up together.” Dr. Piché

they would sleep in a quiet office while their mother worked. Having grown up in a small town she was drawn to situating her practice in Steveston village. Dr. Piché enjoys being part of the community. She sees clients in local shops and restaurants, and has become good friends with local merchants whose businesses she supports. She has made good friends through her practice and in the spirit of it takes a village to raise a child, has passed baby gear on to her patients and they have done the same for her. Dr. Piché is dedicated to helping her clients achieve healthy and beautiful smiles. With a warm smile she concludes, “The biggest reward is hearing someone say they are no longer afraid to come to the dentist. I give my patients the advice that I would like to hear. To trust in your dentist is most important.”

Dr. Piché grew up in Thunder Bay, Ontario and feels right at home in Steveston village. She has lived here with her husband Kirk since 2004. They have three children who are very familiar with the dental office. As babies

Steveston's Best of British: Keeping Calm and Carrying On Story by Sarah Gordon

Photos by Sandra Steier

What happens when two ambitious business owners who already own three Steveston businesses team up? They pool their creative and entrepreneurial talents and introduce a new shop to the village. Steveston’s Best of British is the collaboration between Lenny Entwistle and Elly Fenton. The idea of opening a British shop began to germinate when they repeatedly heard how disappointed people were that Mary’s British Home closed last summer after 30 years in operation. It makes sense that their respective customers were voicing their concerns to Elly and Lenny who have a vested interest in British products; Lenny grew up in Newcastle, England and Elly’s Australian roots are deeply entwined with her homeland’s historical connection to Mother England. Elly owns Robel Income Tax Services, which is

two doors down from Lenny’s Beauty Parlour. The two became acquainted a number of years ago when Lenny began cutting Elly’s hair. In addition to Lenny’s hair salon she also branched out five years ago and opened Lenny’s Vintage Vault where she sells vintage items picked up on travels to England and other places in the world.

The new shop has been well received since it opened on November 11, 2017. Elly says, “It is so rewarding to hear how appreciative our customers are.” Along with the return of British groceries come some familiar faces. Elly and Lenny hired three of Mary’s former staff and added one more staff member. They are extremely knowledgeable about products and have an

established relationship with many of the customers. Both Elly and Lenny also spend time in the shop in addition to running their existing businesses.

While it was a big loss when 4 Cats Art Studio closed last fall, the business partners benefitted and leased the bright corner space on First Avenue and Chatham Street.

The demand for British food is as strong as ever. Bus drivers pop in on their breaks to buy sausage rolls, children love the candy and United Kingdom expats stock up on their nostalgic favourites when they are craving the taste of home. In fact, Elly and Lenny report people of all nationalities are fascinated with the shop. The shop’s glass paneled doors are painted classic red and bear a striking resemblance to Britain’s iconic telephone boxes. As an interesting side note, Lenny mentions the

phone booths are now in retirement and are being sold off and repurposed (she would love to get her hands on one) for many uses including teeny coffee stalls, kiosks, lending libraries and even mini work stations for commuters and tourists. Inside the shop you will find a completely renovated space, which was laborious work; an inch of paint had to be removed before the new flooring could be installed. Look up

at the ceiling at the back of the shop and you will notice some splatter paint intentionally left behind in tribute to the many birthday parties held at 4 Cats. Lenny is responsible for the store’s design and has woven in pops of red and British décor. She says, “I wanted to pull the vintage in.” She found a magnificent historical Union Jack, which Elly had framed as a surprise.

“Our goal was to keep the space fresh, clean and crisp.” Lenny Entwistle The floor space is creatively used to display products, as there is limited wall space due to the number of windows in this shop. The back wall features a long glass display cooler filled with all of the baked goods customers relied on and feared were gone from Steveston forever. The same supplier provides Steveston’s Best of British with Cornish pasties, sausage rolls, meat pies, Scotch eggs, and other baked yummies. The freezer is stocked with everything from smoked haddock, haggis (there’s even a vegetarian haggis), black pudding, white pudding, Scotch kippers, potato cakes, English bangers, Ayreshire bacon and numerous frozen meat pies. Inside the refrigerator you will find cheese, clotted cream and soda pop.

crisps that come in a variety of fun flavours such as roast beef, prawn cocktail, Guinness, and cheese and onion. Extra interest in what’s happening across the pond have been fuelled by binge worthy televisions shows such as Downton Abbey and The Crown, not to mention the buzz surrounding the royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle on May 19. Record the wedding (as it is appears it will be broadcast in the wee hours of the morning), and later in the day put the kettle on and tuck into a traditional cream tea or pull together a Ploughman’s lunch as you enjoy the pomp and circumstance. Steveston’s Best of British has everything you will need for this special occasion, or any other time you are craving the tastes of Britain – after all, you never know when that nostalgic feeling will strike!

The store is laden with teas, confectionary, condiments (jams, chutneys, pickles, tinned goods), chocolates (if you haven't tried Cadbury’s chocolate from England you must!), biscuits (aka cookies in North America), and

Steveston Farmers & Artisans Market: Ten Years of Locally Grown Goodness Story by Sarah Gordon

Photos by Sandra Steier

How time flies. It is hard to believe it has already been 10 years since the Steveston Farmers & Artisans Market first began making it, baking it, growing it and catching it. In May 2008 farmers, artisans, volunteers and shoppers gathered for the inaugural Steveston Farmers & Artisans Market (SFAM) in its first location at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery’s parking lot. An estimated crowd of 10,000 people browsed through the market on opening day to see what Steveston’s new attraction had to offer. SFAM is a not-for-profit operation run by a volunteer committee and is overseen by the Richmond Agricultural and Industrial Society. All monies raised go towards projects and activities organized by the Steveston Community Centre to benefit the community. As an example, the funds generated from the

34

rental of a market stall are being directed towards the renewal of Steveston’s adventure playground. Alan Sakai is SFAM’s energetic chairperson and Karen Krumenacker is the Market Coordinator; both are volunteers. Alan recently retired as a Richmond school district principal and now dedicates his time to volunteering with SFAM in addition to the Steveston Community Centre, the Steveston Judo Club, and The Maple Residences. He began volunteering with SFAM three years ago and increased his commitment in 2016 when the market relocated from its second location (in front of the Gulf of Georgia Cannery and along Third Avenue) to its new home at the Easthope parking lot across the street from the Steveston Community Centre.

April - May 2018

www.StevestonInsider.com

While the new location is smaller, it is a good size and can accommodate as many as 70 vendors. It is reminiscent of the original 2008 market square format. Alan says, “The market was well attended last year and most weekends the stalls were filled. The vendors are happy and keep coming back – that is an indication it’s going well.” SFAM is a place to find fruit and vegetables, which are often picked the same day. Fresh baked goods and prepared foods can also be found. There may even be a local wine producer, distiller or craft beer brewer on site. It’s a place to find unique crafts and directly support an artisan. It’s also a community hub where you will run into friends and neighbours while shopping and share tips about your favourite vendors, and enjoy entertainment by local performers. Alan mentions the South Arm ukulele group were one of last year’s biggest hits. The children’s area also offers good fun for little ones. The tricky part for Metro Vancouver’s numerous markets is attracting farmers who are spread thin during a relatively short and busy season. There is also the problem of other weekend farmers markets vying for local producers and this is one reason SFAM decided to schedule the market on opposite weekends to Ladner’s market.

April - May 2018

With SFAM’s mandate to keep it local, customers will only find seasonal produce for sale. In May and June hanging baskets and other locally sourced plants can be found. By the time July and August roll around produce is abundant and includes everything from beets to beans, blueberries, carrots, corn, herbs, kale, lettuce, potatoes and strawberries. Community is the focus for Alan and SFAM’s team of volunteers. This includes inviting community groups to run food booths rather than having many food trucks on site. Alan mentions Hugh Boyd Secondary School’s football team sold hot dogs and hamburgers last year as a fundraiser and SFAM supports these types of endeavours. The committee’s vision is to have people visit the market and support Steveston village’s shops and restaurants.

Volunteers are always needed. To transform a vacant parking lot into a farmers’ market takes an organized team. Each market day a dozen volunteers are on hand to set up and the same number are needed to help out during the day and afterwards for take down and clean up. Volunteers come from all walks of life, from high school students to seniors. Alan says, “You don’t need to sign your life away. If you can assist for even a couple of shifts it is a great help.”

www.StevestonInsider.com

35

While the tenth anniversary plans are still being hatched, Alan is encouraging people to follow SFAM’s social media sites as plans unfold. As with any good party, there is the certainty of food and entertainment. What does this busy as a bee volunteer most enjoy about his active role with SFAM? Alan says, “Being with the people and seeing happy volunteers and vendors is a highlight.” He concludes, “The market is a happy place and I enjoy being a part of keeping the spirit of the farmers’ market going.”

36

Happy anniversary, SFAM. Thank you to the dedicated and hard working SFAM committee, market day volunteers and the vendors that keep us coming back for more. We are fortunate to have this gathering place where white tents magically pop up every second Sunday from May through to September.

UPDATE Little Mexico Cantina experienced a fire early in the morning of March 13. While the news is devastating, owner Carol Janeczko is happy to report nobody was hurt. Sadly, smoke and water damage was extensive and this popular Steveston restaurant is now closed as major restoration work is underway. It could take a few months to reopen. "We will rebuild. We aren't going anywhere. I love this community. Our patrons have been unbelievable with their support and my staff is rallying. The outdoor patio is the midst of being refurbished and we look forward to welcoming patrons back to the Little Mexico Cantina as soon as we can." Carol Janeczko
