October - November 2016

Publisher's Note Autumn may be one of the most perfect seasons with cooler, but often sun-filled days; it offers opportunities to pull on a sweater and head out for a stroll or bike ride, while crunching through fallen leaves. It’s a time for leaf raking, spring bulb planting, planning Thanksgiving dinner and dreaming up the perfect Halloween costume. Fall is also a time for many fun local events including the Steveston Scarecrow Crawl, Trick or Treat in Steveston Village, Oktoberfest at the Steveston Community Centre, the Cannery Farmers' Market and Halloween at the Cannery. Halloween is on a Monday this year so Steveston Insider Costume Contest will be taking a break. The popular Steveston Christmas Craft Fair takes place at the end of November along with the Steveston Merchants Association’s shopping and dining extravaganza, Girls’ Night Out. Then, in early December, Santa arrives by boat at Fisherman’s Wharf to the joy of excited spectators.

This month’s cover models, Steveston residents Mike and Carly Smith, really enjoy getting into the Halloween spirit and describe themselves as “Halloween nuts.” Read their story on page 6-7. People travel from far afield to shop at Steveston Village Maternity. Owners Ben and Beth Fairchild stock the store with maternity, baby and children’s clothing, along with an assortment of wonderful baby and toddler gear. Read why they have such a loyal following. There was a time when Steveston had a number of antique stores. Al Kolleth, the friendly owner of the new business Steveston Village Antiques and Collectibles, thought the time was ripe to reintroduce this concept with some vintage and contemporary additions. Enjoy carving turkeys and pumpkins - I wish everyone a very happy Thanksgiving and a fun-filled Halloween!

Cover Story

Mike Smith: Anchored in Steveston Story by Sarah Gordon

Photos by Sandra Steier

Mike “Smitty” Smith is an instantly likeable fellow with a big laugh that matches his stature. He is proud to let people know he was born and bred in Steveston. His roots are firmly planted in the community, so much so that his great grandfather Rudolph Martin Grauer has a Richmond school named in his honour.

Smith Sr.) was a man of many talents. He was a satirist, poet and avid reader who also worked as a film editor. In addition, he was a frequent contributor to the Richmond Review newspaper and had a column called BURP (Beer Users in Richmond Parks).

Grauer established a general store on Sea Island in 1914 and after 67 years in operation the store was torn down. Grauer was Richmond’s Reeve (mayor) from 1930 to 1949. He also served on the Richmond School Board and was an active member in the Richmond lacrosse organization.

Mike’s mother, Sandy Cooper, is an Emmy Award winning makeup artist and continues to live in Steveston. He says having a mother in the film industry keeps things interesting and he has enjoyed opportunities to visit her on set. He recalls meeting Robin Williams when his mum worked as his personal makeup artist on the film Jumanji and reports, “Williams was a cool, down to earth man.”

Raised in what he describes as “an eccentric household in Steveston,” Mike’s father (Mike

Mike’s first job was at the Steveston bike shop at age 11 where he swept floors and

he continued working there through his teen years. While attending Steveston High he met his wife Carly. They have been together for 15 years and married five years ago.

Mike says his parents had an amazing love for each other, and their role modelling is an inspiration for his own marriage. The busy couple both work for the City of Richmond. Mike works in the fleet operations department where he operates heavy equipment while Carly works in the water services department and specializes in leak detection. Mike also sits on the board of directors for a publicly traded mining company and he DJs at the Buck & Ear Bar and Grill. Carly flair bartends (imagine the movie Cocktail where Tom Cruise juggles drinks) for extremebartending.com all over the globe. Their family unit includes a “fur baby” 2.2 pound Miki dog named Pumpkin. When asked about his impressions of Steveston, with tongue in cheek he says, “It is maturing from a sleepy little drinking town with a fishing problem” to being in the early stages of taking on a Yaletown vibe, although he stresses the importance of maintaining the nostalgic feeling that contributes to the village’s overall charm.

being like an overgrown kid and says she would happily dress up in costume and go out trick-or-treating if she could get away with it. He also admits they throw some wonderful parties with their combined talents, he loves cooking and Carly offers up her bartending skills. The couple lived a European-like lifestyle when they resided at their Steveston village condo. They both enjoy supporting independent businesses and chose to grocery shop daily or dine out in local restaurants. They have moved to the “quiet side of Steveston,” on No. 2 Road in their first house, which they are thrilled about. When not busy working, the Smiths enjoy retreating to their waterfront cabin on Harrison River. In his free time Mike happily gives back to the community. He has volunteered at the Steveston Salmon Festival and says on a small scale he does little things like pick up litter. His motto is “I will help anyone when they need a hand.” Following in his great grandfather’s footsteps, don’t be surprised if you see Mike Smith’s name on a future civic election ballot. He aspires to run for Richmond city council in hope that he can give back to a community that has given so much to him.

The Smiths describe themselves as “Halloween nuts” and love festive occasions. Until recently they lived in the heart of the village, on First Avenue beside Waves. Carly would dress up and sit at their street level front door and hand out as many as 3,000 pieces of candy during the Steveston Merchants Association Trick or Treat in Steveston Village event. Mike feels events like this are a real boon for Steveston. Mike describes his wife as October - November 2016

Steveston Village Maternity:

A Boutique for Stylish Mums-to-be and Their Children Story by Sarah Gordon

Photos by Sandra Steier

Back in 2011 the idea of opening Steveston Village Maternity was a light bulb moment for Beth and Ben Fairchild. The married couple had been living in the village for two years when they found out they were expecting their first baby. At that time Beth was an English teacher at a Delta high school and was looking for professional maternity clothing, which she discovered was easier said than done. Plus, she wanted to wear original and stylish attire. With very few places for expecting mums to shop locally, the idea of opening Steveston Village Maternity was conceived to fulfill a need for the community. Ben is originally from Seattle and relocated to Canada to be with Beth. Although she grew up in Delta, many of her relatives are Steveston based and she has always been smitten with this community, therefore it was an easy choice to settle here. 12

“We can’t think of a better place than Steveston to raise a family.” Beth Fairchild While they did not have previous retail experience, Beth knew her teaching and organizational skills would be an asset. Ben is very social - kids will ask their parents to drop in just so they can say hi to him. Beth credits his incredible customer service skill and knowledge of products, and adds he is also a computer whiz and inventory pro. In addition to Ben, who is often at the store during the week, they have four part-time staff who are all mothers. The Fairchilds work together on weekends. This is when they see the most people come through the door and as owners they know their presence has a lot of impact. The proverb “it takes a village to raise a

accessories, baby wear, baby carriers and toys, other baby essentials such as bath products, bibs, blankets, books, bottles can be found. The Fairchilds have also responded to customers’ requests to carry clothing for children up to age six. As well, they sell footwear - Native shoes and boots for kids and adults and Blundstone, Bogs, Converse, Hatley, Palladium and Stride Rite for little ones. The couple is excited to announce they are actively working on their online shop, which will launch in 2017. child” applies to the Fairchild’s situation. Beth credits her parents devotion to care giving for their grandchildren and mentions, “I don’t know what we would do without them.” During the week Beth manages the home front – their son has entered preschool and their daughter is in kindergarten. Beth indicates this is a very special job and they truly care about their customers. A heart-warming perk is seeing women move from pregnancy to the birth of their babies and beyond. There is always great excitement the first time a new baby visits Steveston Village Maternity. Beth says, “We have made a lot of friends through the store.” They also feel very fortunate to have a large number of loyal customers. In addition to maternity clothing, nursing

People travel from far afield to shop at Steveston Village Maternity. They see customers from Abbotsford, Langley, Vancouver and even Seattle, and of course they have strong support from local clients. Beth says, “The fringe benefit is they discover and explore the village at the same time.” Beth points out the store is perfectly situated, surrounded by complementary businesses, and she and Ben have wonderful relationships with their neighbouring merchants.

The couple believe in practicing what they preach; if people are encouraged to shop locally there should be local products available.

13

In addition to local lines such as Au Fait Mama, Granted, Herschel, Hudson + Hobbs, Jax & Lennon, Minimoc, Native shoes, Nine O’Clock Gun, Padraig Cottage and Vonbon, Steveston Village Maternity also carries American, Australian and UK brands. Beth notes, “We like to keep things fresh. We like consistency but we also like to find new products. I really enjoy buying for the store.”

The holiday season is just around the bend, which is always a busy time at the maternity shop. Gifts are easily found for expecting and new mums, babies and children.

Teenagers stroll in to purchase Nine O’Clock Gun ball caps (this company seeks out logos of forgotten Canadian sports teams and bring them back to life), Herschel backpacks (a Vancouver company which has experienced international success) and S’well water bottles (made from nonleaching and non-toxic stainless steel, they keep drinks cold for 24 hours and hot for 12 hours). The holidays always call for a special outfit to be pulled out of the closet for parties and other special events. Pregnant women will be pleased to know Steveston Village Maternity’s holiday attire can be dressed up and down to wear afterwards. Other little secrets to spill – the shop offers a gift registry and free gift-wrapping. Several times a year educational workshops are offered after hours. These informative sessions vary and may feature a talk by a sleep consultant or a nutritionist. Sleep deprived parents may discover tips on how to secure a few more zzzs for everyone in the house, or how to offer their child a well balanced meal without having food tossed off the highchair tray.

October - November 2016

In their free time the Fairchilds enjoy the local scene, from dining out, to visits to Garry Point Park and Steveston Park’s playground. Seeing familiar faces on the street offers a small town comfort that confirms they made the perfect choice to settle here and raise their family. As for their hunch that a maternity shop was needed in the village – five successful years in operation is confirmation if you build a needed business, they will come. Metro Vancouver Home Sales Return to Typical Levels

For the second straight month, the Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver has reported that home buyer demand has moved off of the record-breaking pace seen earlier this year and returned to more typical levels. Sales have been trending downward in Metro Vancouver for a few months. This, coupled with the new foreign buyer tax, has slowed sales and caused some uncertainty among local home buyers and sellers. It is in exactly these market conditions that having an experienced professional working for you is extremely important. Call me today or stop by my office to learn how over 30 years of local real estate knowledge can help navigate this important process for you.

Steveston Village Antiques & Collectibles: “Out With The New, in With the Olde” Story by Sarah Gordon

Photos by Sandra Steier

Each day when Al Kolleth arrives at his new shop, Steveston Village Antiques & Collectibles, he cannot believe how much his life has changed since he left his job in the government public sector to open his own business. He says with a smile, “It was the best move I ever made.” He explains, “I was looking for a change, to get out of the cubicle and closed window environment.” After his mother passed away (she had a common love of collectibles) the seed was planted to start his own business.

“I call myself the Steveston picker. I look for things that people don’t see every day.” Al Kolleth 30

Initially he thought he would sell items online, however, a stroll along Second Avenue in Steveston altered his plan. He spotted a for lease sign next to Wool and Wicker which had recently subdivided their space. Although Steveston formerly had a rich history with antique stores he realized there was now a deficit and Steveston could benefit from a new shop. He signed the lease in mid-March and after extensive renovations Steveston Village Antiques & Collectibles opened in mid-May. He added laminate floors, painted, removed a wall and created a wharf-like atmosphere with treated wood posts and fishing nets suspended from the ceiling. Steveston Village Antiques & Collectibles

sells vintage, retro, and rustic goods ranging from furniture to metal signage and all sorts of other items that were found in homes from the 1930s to the 1970s. The eclectic collection of records, cameras, reproduction clocks, artwork and many other goodies adds character to any home, cabin or man cave. In addition, Al points out he sells small to mid-size 1960s and 1970s furniture and has a hard time keeping console stereos in the store. They are back in fashion and have the benefit of having a very good sound. Some pieces date as far back as the late 1880s. Currently he has a pair of Norwegian ice skates with leather strappings from 1896. Also for sale is a hickory shaft golf club made by the Anderson Anstruther company dating back to the 1880s.

His motto is “Out with the new, in with the olde.” Al is proud to be in the business of giving collectibles and antiques a new lease on life rather than have them needlessly end up in the landfill. He will purchase directly from customers depending on what the item is. He sources his treasures by regularly scouring flea markets and estate sales, and is contacted by people who are downsizing their homes. A great deal of his business is generated from word of mouth. He quotes, in retro fashion, the 1970s Faberge Organic shampoo “And they told two friends, and so and on…” Social media and his sidewalk sandwich board also steer traffic his way. His customer base features a wide cross section of people in their mid 20s through to seniors. October - November 2016

Looking for a unique birthday, Christmas gift or something to adorn the man cave? Al has also found a niche for upcycling record albums and covers. He creates clocks from records and record covers – bring yours in and he will happily make one. He also frames album covers many will stir up memories, plus they are wonderful conversation pieces. If it is artwork you are looking for, Steveston Village Antiques & Collectibles sells original oil paintings and watercolours by Steveston artist Liz Sharpe. A variety of premade sports team signs with a distressed look can also be found, with the option to order custom signs featuring your favourite team, city or other wording of your choice.

What feedback is he hearing? Clients love the feel of the store with retro music playing in the background and the eclectic assortment of collectibles, antiques and new merchandise that he has woven together. They tell him they will be bringing friends back and Steveston has needed this type of store. Business-wise, he is a one-man show for the time being, from staffing the store to managing the books, picking up supplies and sourcing merchandise. He says the business is engrossing and he loves it. Al played baseball in Richmond for 20 years in a fast pitch league and moved from Burnaby to Richmond in 1990. He has lived in Steveston for the past twelve years. He’s an avid golfer and enjoys squeezing in a round whenever possible. He also likes getting away to Whistler for rest and relaxation. Spending

32

time with his ten-year-old daughter is high on the list of things he loves. His impression of Steveston, first as a resident, and now as a merchant, is it is a tightly knit and friendly community with so much to offer. He has now added to the offerings by introducing a much-needed antiques and collectibles store. With a warm smile he reminds customers to check back and if he hasn’t got what you are looking for “the Steveston picker” will go on the hunt to track it down!
