Publisher's Note We’re already half way through this gorgeous summer. A number of anticipated events are on the horizon in celebration of the sea, farms, families, beer and culture, including the Richmond Maritime Festival, Steveston Rotary Duck Race, Garlic Festival, London Family Farm Day, Steveston Dragon Boat Festival, Steveston Beer Fest and Culture Days. The Steveston Farmers & Artisans Market continues to offer locally made food and unique hand crafted products in its new location across from the Steveston Community Centre until October 17. Steveston Outdoor Pool is open until the Labour Day long weekend. Steveston Barbers is celebrating its eightieth anniversary this year, making it one of the village’s longest operating businesses. It is an honour to feature the well-loved barbers on the cover and tell their story. Change is in the air as some businesses are moving, others are closing and we welcome some new shops. Sinfully The Best has opened a second location on Bayview Street. As well, Scout & Co. has opened a second location on Moncton Street. Purpose Smoothie opened on Bayview Street. Xiaguan Tuocha Tea opened at London Landing. Sadly, we say goodbye to 4Cats and wish owner Lyssa great success with her new business Paintillio. Steveston Village Antiques will close the storefront but continue to operate

the business. The Juice Truck is opening on First Avenue. Onni Group is back before the City with a new rezoning proposal for Imperial Landing. In the last issue of Steveston Insider we answered the most asked question of the year – what grocery store is coming to the village? Another burning question is when will Ember Indian Kitchen open? The beautiful new restaurant located at London Landing will open later this summer. Paddlers aplenty (1,900 to be precise!) will show up to race in the Steveston Dragon Boat Festival on August 26. The Festival's Executive Director Ann Phelps shares background details. Steveston (a.k.a. “Storybrooke”) has said farewell to the filming of TV show Once Upon a Time. Although it has been renewed for a 7th season, Steveston will no longer be used as the primary set. Souvenirs continue to be sold at Steveston Visitor Centre. Enjoy all that our community has to offer during these sun filled months. Ride a bike along the dyke, take in a sunset, stroll along the waterfront with an ice cream or enjoy a Steveston breeze while dining on one of our many outstanding restaurant patios. Steveston is simply the place to be!

Steveston Barbers:

A Steveston Tradition Since 1937 Story by Sarah Gordon

Photos by Sandra Steier

The striped barber pole found outside many barbershops dates back to the Middle Ages to advertise the service offered within. Steveston Barbers’ honours this tradition at the Chatham Street shop, which happens to be celebrating its eightieth anniversary this year, making it one of the village’s longest operating businesses.

It seems Iain was destined to become a barber. He speaks fondly of his father Tony who began cutting hair in London’s West End when he was only 15 years old. Like his father, Iain began working as a barber at the young age of 18. In 1997 Tony left England and moved to Steveston where he joined his son at the busy barbershop.

Founded in 1937 by Peter Martyniuk, Steveston Barbers got its start on Moncton Street where Village Bikes is located. In the mid-1960s the establishment moved to the opposite side of the street and changed ownership.

“My dad taught me all the techniques.” Iain MacKelworth

Iain MacKelworth left his native England in 1990 and began working at the Steveston barbershop. Three years later he jumped at the opportunity to purchase the business from owner Randy Hendricks. The shop moved to its current site in 2008 when the former location was slated for demolition.

8

The same year Iain’s brother-in-law Ryan Lewis also joined the team; he entered the profession straight out of high school. Iain’s son Julian is the third generation of the MacKelworth family to learn the trade and works alongside his father. Long time Steveston Barbers staff Dave Lamoureux and Ray Tsuji round out the team. All of the barbers are on top of the constant change in trends; they take pride in being

Ray Tsuji, Dave Lamoureux, Iain MacKelworth, Julian MacKelworth and Ryan Lewis “old school at heart, but modern for style.” Young men are partial to popular styles like fades and side parts, which are reminiscent of the 1930s short back and sides cut. Iain says anything goes these days; there are no standard haircuts in a day’s work. Iain recalls his father telling him the only time the demand for barbers slumped was in the 1970s when long hair and beards were at the height of fashion. Ryan adds, “Barbering is very trendy right now.” Maintaining a style requires a cut approximately every six weeks, and Steveston Barbers strives to keep prices affordable.

It’s walk in business only at Steveston Barbers and it is common to see line-ups form on busy Saturdays. Only haircuts are offered, as they simply don’t have the space for extra services. A visit to Steveston Barbers is also a social affair. The shop’s chairs face the centre of the room so customers can see each other. Plenty of discussions unfold, ranging from sports and politics to swapping information and networking.

“We make sure men walk out of here feeling like a million bucks.” Ryan Lewis

Over time the eclectic décor has evolved with customers donating sports banners, cameras and beer bottles. Ryan points out that trades have been made if there is a particular piece of memorabilia that catches someone’s eye. They acknowledge the additional generous donations made to the barbershop by their friends at Steveston Tattoo Company.

Their clientele is as diverse as the cuts offered. Iain says, “Every cross section of age and stage of life comes through here, from baby’s first haircut to centenarians.” Iain points out if a customer has reached the age of 100 the cut is on the house. He mentions, “It is common to see three generations of customers get their hair cut here.”

“We love being part of this community. We connect with so many people and businesses and for that we feel very grateful.” Iain MacKelworth

He mentions an ongoing good-natured rivalry between him and business owner Davood Khatami of Davood’s Bistro. During the 2010 FIFA World Cup the pair backed different teams; Iain cheered for England while Davood supported Germany. The pair traded insults and wagers in the lead up to the big game – Germany won and in good fun Iain wore lederhosen and waved the German flag at the intersection of No. 1 Road and Moncton Street. On a whim, Iain and Ryan decided to check out Vancouver’s 2015 Battle of the Barbers competition to see how the little shop would fare. A huge feather in their caps, they tied for first place against 40 competing barbers. Community involvement is important to Iain and his team. He says, “The community’s been good to us and we like to give back.” They participate in Seafair Minor Hockey Association’s Fathers and Sons Shaving for the Brave event in support of B.C. Children’s Hospital.

10

What do the barbers enjoy most about their work? The opportunity to be creative and make clients look and feel great tops the list, along with meeting the amazing network of people who pass through the shop. Iain concludes, “Steveston is a very special corner of the world and I have made some very good friends through the business.”

Ember Indian Kitchen: Steveston’s Exotic New Dining Destination Story by Sarah Gordon

Photos by Sandra Steier

Anticipation is mounting as Stevestonites eagerly await their first visit to Ember Indian Kitchen, which is due to open this summer. It is a dream come true for owners Amin and Farida Sunderji who are regularly asked, “When are you opening?” as people try to sneak a peek when they walk by. The charming husband and wife team have come out of early retirement to embark on this adventure; they feel Indian cuisine has been missing from Steveston and west Richmond. Their intention is to offer a first class dining experience to the neighbourhood where they reside.

“It is an opportunity to fill a gap in the selection of restaurants in Steveston.” Amin Sunderji Clearly they have an accurate take on locals’ wish lists. The buzz is building as people are talking and taking to social media to engage and find out more about their new business.

14

The couple met and married in Uganda, their country of origin. Both are from large families and gatherings involving meals, conversations and laughter are integral memories for both of them. They fled Idi Amin’s dictatorship in 1972 and moved to Canada. Amin laughs when he mentions they were promised to be located close to their relatives in Toronto – instead they ended up in “nearby” Kamloops. The Sunderjis were furniture storeowners for over 35 years and have now transferred their business savvy to the world of restaurant management. They love food and are excited to have hired an Indian chef and a team of staff who are set to offer an exceptional dining experience. They designed the space with their daughter Saleema Remtula who owns Lane Home Furnishings with her husband. She mentions she had fun working with her parents to help select the décor.

August - September 2017

www.StevestonInsider.com

Interior design was very important; they didn’t want the restaurant to look like a traditional Indian restaurant. Saleema says, “After starting quite young with the family business, interior design comes naturally to me, so selecting the wall paper, lighting and pushing for the copper bling at the bar was easy!”

the Nile. The other print is of a gorgeous peacock, which is an Indian symbol of grace, joy, beauty and love. The location is exceptional. It’s a tranquil and unique waterfront dining setting. The corner restaurant seats 60 indoors and 35 on the outdoor patio. Wall to wall windows face east and south, with two glass roll up garage doors that open to patio seating facing the Fraser River and Shady Island; as you dine you may spot eagles and herons flying by.

The bright airy space features high ceilings adorned with black and white chandeliers and pendant lights, creating an exotic ambience. Amin points to the beams the lighting is suspended from and mentions the reclaimed wood comes from an old British Columbia barn. Two oversized framed black and white prints are focal points. One captures a nautical scene. Look closely and you will notice the image is not Steveston but rather is the Nile River with felucca boats (Egypt’s equivalent of sailboats). This connects the owners to their homeland; Amin remembers playing with friends in Lake Victoria that streams into

take centre stage alongside crowd pleasing perennial favourites such as butter chicken and fish pakoras. Patrons will explore African Indian food through appetizers and entrees including coconut chicken curry, fish masala, lamb biryani, lentil dal and cauliflower and potato curry. Both gluten-free and vegetarian selections will be offered.

Behind the scenes the spacious stainless steel kitchen is a chef’s dream come true. Amin mentions that everyone who has toured the facility is suitably impressed. Both naan and roti will be made on site in the restaurant’s gas burning tandoor.

The business name salutes the popular African Indian method of grilling over charcoal embers.

Amin and Farida suspect take out orders and catering opportunities will be very popular. There have already been requests to book receptions in the gorgeous space. “The quality of food is our number one priority. It is very important to us that the community enjoys Ember. We want it to feel like home,” Amin says. Welcome to the neighbourhood, Ember Indian Kitchen. Steveston has eagerly been waiting your arrival!

Ember Indian Kitchen’s specialty will be African Indian food with a spotlight on regional dishes from both Northern and Southern Indian cuisine. Grilled meats will

Steveston Dragon Boat Festival: A Summer Send Off Story by Sarah Gordon

Photos by Clayton Perry from 2013

Next year will be the Canadian International Dragon Boat Festival Society’s 30th anniversary of having introduced magnificent teak dragon boats to local waters filled with paddlers and propelled by team spirit. Dragon boats originated in China approximately 2,500 years ago. In the 1980s some local Chinese Canadians wanted to bring dragon boating to Vancouver. With the help of the Hong Kong Economic and Tourism Office, six teak boats were donated to the Chinese Cultural Centre and dragon boating was exhibited at Expo 86. It continued for two years with the community running it and in 1989 the Canadian International Dragon Boat Festival Society formed. Founders Milton Wong and David Lam wanted to present an event to showcase a multicultural team sport that is colourful, fun, social and easy to get involved with. Ann Phelps has been associated with the organization since its inception. She says with a smile, “I started with dragon boat the first

year as a paddler – I was the second worst paddler in the boat.” She was hired as the society’s volunteer coordinator, worked her way up to production manager and finally became executive director, a position she has held for 15 years. The Canadian International Dragon Boat Festival Society produces the two day Concord Pacific Vancouver Dragon Boat Festival and the one day Steveston Dragon Boat Festival. As well, it operates a number of other dragon boat and paddling events throughout the year.

“What I love about dragon boat is how it is so inclusive. We have this saying, “In a dragon boat, no one is left behind.” Ann Phelps Ann explains, “Regardless of your talent or ability, mental or physical, there is a place for you. It’s a truly inclusive sport. It’s also

Now in its eighth year, Steveston was selected for its scenic location on the Fraser River and its idyllic waterfront boardwalk where spectators view the races. Ann says, “Steveston is a wonderful location. The community is very supportive and we really appreciate how they’ve welcomed us to the neighbourhood.” Ann shares some facts for dragon boat festival attendees. Close to 1,900 paddlers and as many as 15,000 people will attend the event. The races are six lines wide and run every 10 to 15 minutes. Races begin at 8:00 a.m. and run until around 5:00 p.m. subject to weather and any delays. This year paddlers come from Burnaby, Langley, Richmond, Surrey and Vancouver. Approximately one third of the teams are out of towners from Kelowna, Salt Spring Island, Sechelt, Vancouver Island and Washington State.

social. People meet as strangers and they find lifelong friends and a love of sport. We have paddlers who are visually impaired, face mental health challenges on a daily basis or are low on financial resources. Paddlers are every size and age, from newbies to competitive. Everyone races together, works as a team, and because of it, they move the boat.”

The Steveston Dragon Boat Festival takes place on Saturday, August 26.

“Richmond Food Bank has a dragon boat team and is also the designated charity for the event.” Ann Phelps Another local connection is Richmond Secondary School’s Flying Colts dragon boat team. Ann mentions, “They don’t paddle as they finish when school is over, but they volunteer at the event lead by our coordinator Owen Fan.” Some festival highlights include an early breakfast and lunch throughout the day served by the Tsawwassen Boundary Bay

some of Circus West’s acrobats will entertain pedestrians. Fun for little dragons (a.k.a. children) includes dragon egg decorating and dragon art. A site liquor license offers adults a chance to cool down with a beer or a glass of wine. Sponsors and community partners will provide interactive activities, free samples, and samples of new products.

Lions Club Streetside Community Kitchen to raise money for their community programs. “New this year, Lottie’s Gelati Stand will serve gelati and espresso coffee drinks. John Wong is a local who runs Mr. Tube Steak and he makes a great hot dog. Travelling Dawg is another local food booth that will be new to us.” What would a festival be without entertainment? The Steveston Dragon Boat Festival delivers with an array of performers taking to the World Beat stage including Canada’s only all-female mariachi band Los Estrellas de Vancouver, interactive drum group Los Tambores, the Winston Matsushita jazz quartet, hillbilly rock group The Palomars, and Nashville bound country singer Rose Ranger. In addition, site wide atmospheric entertainment includes a dragon dance and

32

What is Ann most looking forward to? “I’m really excited about the all-female Mariachi band. I think they will blow up the stage. I also like to meet the visiting paddler tourists. They are on vacation after all, so they are happy to just soak up the sun and between races they visit Steveston for a little shopping.” Special souvenir t-shirts will be sold and funds raised will benefit the Richmond Food Bank. She reminds festival attendees that parking at Homma Elementary is by donation, with funds also benefiting the charity. The Society is thankful to sponsor Onni and to the community for its support. To all paddlers, we welcome you to Steveston Village; we wish you smooth water and clear sky. Let the races begin!

A HUGE THANK YOU! RHA Thrift Shop Coordinator, Ursula Van Duin extends A HUGE THANK YOU to hundreds of people who voted for the Auxiliary in the Canada-wide “THIS PLACE MATTERS” heritage competition that ended July 20th. The competition invited 26 groups to identify heritage projects in their area and compete for cash prizes and votes, while raising funds for their historic places. While the results of the competition were not available at press time, the Auxiliary raised $26,500 through the competition towards its FIRM FOUNDATION fundraising campaign for the restoration and renovation of the building. Built in 1894 as a Methodist Church, it is one of Steveston’s most recognized historic buildings. The competition was an opportunity to publicize the history of the building, to announce the fact that the Auxiliary is the new owner and to raise money to fund critical renovations. Funds for the renovation will come from support from the public and a variety of special upcoming fundraising events. Revenue earned through Thrift Shop sales outside of special events and donations will continue to be designated to the Richmond Hospital and other healthcare initiatives in Richmond. The Thrift Shop is 100% run by more than 120 volunteers.
