A Resource for Families and Fun in Steveston Welcome to the Christmas issue of Steveston Insider Magazine! It is snowing as I am sitting at my desk writing my year end message! I told my family that the Farmer’s Almanac is forecasting above-normal snowfalls and colder temperatures this December and January. My son was feeling sad about missing the snow because we have our Hawaii vacation booked in December. Well, you can imagine his glee when the snow came early, it may as well been Christmas morning! What is on your December to-do list? Family photos, Christmas cards, hosting a tree trimming party, hanging outdoor lights, making a wreath, ordering a turkey, gift shopping, baking, poinsettias, craft fairs, family feasts, hostess gifts, celebrating Hanukkah, making latkes, shopping for the perfect party dress? December is also a time for sharing, donating, volunteering and recycling, so remember to give back this season so all can enjoy. If you have kids, what are they doing over the winter break? Perhaps they are building a gingerbread house, baking cookies, donating a toy to the local Christmas fund, learning Christmas carols, writing to Santa, visiting grandparents, or attending art classes or gymnastics camp. Santa comes early this year! Take the kids to visit Santa at the Cannery when he arrives off the boat on November 28, then ride the horse-drawn carriage as it circles the village. Donations go to the Richmond Christmas Fund so let your kids know ahead of time that they are doing a good deed by bringing some money for their carriage ride. New this year is Christmas at the Cannery where you can tour beautifully decorated trees by local merchants, watch a movie, hear some music and stroll through the Cannery. Our merchants go all out for Christmas, just go for a walk at night and you will be in awe of stores like Prickly Pear, The Spotted Frog, Pieces, A Monkey Tree, H2O, and so many more that twinkle and mesmerize us. On December 23, my family eagerly heads over to the Hunt Street neighbourhood at 7pm to watch the annual Santa Parade put on by the Rotary Club of Steveston. It truly is a small-town parade where neighbours come out, share hot drinks, set up portable fire pits, and donate food and money, collected by Rotarians, to assist local seniors, the Richmond Food Bank and Richmond schools breakfast programs. Dave Groves and daughter Ava are featured on the cover shopping at Pieces in Steveston village. You may have noticed something different about this issue of Steveston Insider - this is the first cover to feature an adult! Perhaps you recognize this Stevestonite and popular yoga instructor. Dave and Leah Groves are the owners of Bikram Yoga Richmond located at Lansdowne Mall. The Groves moved to Steveston in 2006. They feel very fortunate to live in this community and have a deep appreciation for the small town atmosphere, the terrific shops, and the Steveston Farmers and Artisans Market. They relocated from Tsawwassen with their three young children Ava (7), Jordan (5), and Nicholas (2), to be closer to their business, but quickly discovered the magic of Steveston and realized the quality of life is perfect for their family. In the summer, Steveston Park is a big hit with their children who are particularly fond of the water park and ice cream in the village. Dave loves to fish with their oldest son Jordan at Garry Point. During the Sockeye salmon run this past summer, the Groves made trips to the river to watch hundreds of fish jumping. Now that is a unique Steveston experience. They cycle to school and enjoy taking the scenic route along the boardwalk. You would think that three young children would keep them busy enough, but Dave and Leah also run the award-winning Bikram Yoga Richmond, which opened in 2002. They moved to their current location in 2008 after recognizing the need for a larger space due to the growing popularity of this method of yoga. Bikram Method Hatha Yoga, also known as “hot yoga”, is a sequence of 26 postures and 2 breathing exercises practiced in a heated room. The heat is turned up to 40 degrees and burns up to 400 calories an hour! It is specifically designed to work the entire body, using heat to stretch deeper, prevent injury and flush unwanted toxins. This yoga series stimulates the organs, glands and nerves and systematically moves fresh oxygenated blood to 100% of the body restoring health to all systems. Benefits of a regular practice include weight loss, improved muscle tone, stress relief, increased energy and an overall sense of physical and mental well-being. The Art of Storytelling by Sarah Gordon
I have a thing for Stuart McLean. My husband knows it, and my book club friends indulge me when I bring up his name. Like a moth to a flame, I am drawn to Stuart McLean’s CBC radio program The Vinyl Cafe. Is it his voice? His voice is like a fine wine with undertones of apricot, peach and a hint of oak, and has notable similarities to another personal favourite of mine, dear old Jimmy Stewart, from the golden days of the silver screen. No, there is more to it. It is McLean’s words. His words have the ability to take me on an emotional rollercoaster ride within the space of a short story. One moment I am laughing aloud and within a nanosecond, I am reduced to tears by his wistful nostalgia. When I think of the art of storytelling, Jimmy Stewart comes to mind again. I recall his appearance on Johnny Carson’s The Tonight Show where he read a poem called My Dog Named Bo about the loss of his dog. It was so touching that I still remember it twenty years later (look it up on YouTube if you are interested). As a writer, I admire McLean’s innate ability to tell a story. He is a master of the spoken and written word. Before the days of television, families would cluster around the radio and listen to programs together. Although it was before my time, I find great comfort in that image. Listening to the radio liberates your imagination. There are no visual distractions, and a narrator, like my hero McLean, is in full control of making a story fly and unveiling all types of emotions through the delivery of words. By the time this issue of Steveston Insider is published, I will finally have revealed a secret to my husband that I have managed to keep for four months. I have always wanted to see McLean in person and through some extremely good karma I managed to purchase front row seats (I am screaming with joy inside!) to see Stuart McLean’s Christmas Tour in Vancouver. Knowing how much of a fan David is of anything to do with CBC Radio, I know he will be equally excited. If you are unfamiliar with The Vinyl Cafe, McLean recounts fictional stories about character Dave, owner of a second hand record store, his wife, Morley, and their family. McLean also reads a story each week sent in by listeners, which confirms that there are many wonderful Canadian storytellers. Many shows are recorded in front of an audience and showcase some amazing Canadian musicians. The Vinyl Cafe program travels across Canada to major hubs and smaller towns. If you ever feel the need for a dose of patriotism, tune in and you will feel the Canadian connection from Tofino to St. John’s, through radio waves. McLean has a way of making you feel like bursting into a rousing chorus of “O Canada”. If my fascination with The Vinyl Cafe has piqued your curiosity, this Christmas make sure to listen to McLean’s story Dave Cooks the Turkey. This classic story is full of humour, on par with Mr. Bean’s Christmas Turkey. While you are at it, watch It’s a Wonderful Life and see if you can detect a similarity between my two heroes, Stuart and Stewart! Here is to some fine storytelling in your home this holiday season. Bell’s Bake Shop an interview with Jen Bell Text by Sarah Gordon

Although Jen Bell has childhood memories of cakes and treats baked by her mother and grandmother, it took time for her own love of baking to take hold, but once it did, there was no stopping her! She attended Dubrulle Culinary Arts and graduated in 2006 with a strong interest in pastry. Bell headed off to England where she worked in the world of pastries and eventually ended up in the seaside town of Brighton working in a cupcake shop. Having come full circle, she is now home, by the waterfront, and preparing to open her new business, Bell’s Bake Shop, Steveston’s first bakery to specialize in cupcakes. Bell also came home with her British husband of almost two years, Paul Halbane, Executive Chef of the Blue Canoe Waterfront Restaurant who she met on the job in England. What is her attraction to cupcakes? Bell says not only does baking come naturally to her, but also she enjoys the fact that cupcakes make people happy. What could be more perfect than having happy customers greet you every day? Bell is certainly filling a void in Steveston and cupcakes are very much in fashion. Soon you will see people walking down the street eating banana butterscotch, carrot, vanilla, chocolate, devil’s food, red velvet, confetti and seasonal cupcakes with equally enticing icings and sprinkles. Bell is also hoping to cater to the masculine cupcake buyer with a special maple bacon cupcake. Bell has taken into account special diets by offering gluten free and vegan cupcakes, as well as the opportunity to special order cupcakes for diabetics. The sunny yellow bake shop will sell coffee and tea and have space to sit down at bar stools to enjoy your treat. Bell’s cupcakes come in three sizes: minis, regulars and for the big appetite, giants. Bell’s oven can bake an impressive twenty dozen cupcakes at one time. Birthdays, weddings and all special occasion orders are welcome. With extremely busy careers in the culinary world, Bell and her husband have little time available for anything other than work however, they do enjoy going to concerts, and Bell confesses that she has the travel bug and has journeyed to Australia, Southeast Asia and England. Bell has strong ties to Steveston as she grew up in Richmond and lives in the Seafair neighbourhood. She has fond memories of riding her bike to Steveston as a child and family meals at Pajo’s. Bell was in the first graduating class of Hugh Boyd Secondary School. Is there a story behind the Bell’s Bake Shop logo, which features a retro image of a voluptuous woman, wearing an apron and a circa 1950s dress while holding a cupcake? Bell admits that she has a passion for 1950s fashion and if she could, she would wear dresses every day. When she has more time, she hopes to dust off her sewing machine to make some dresses. When asked if her staff would be wearing 1950s uniforms she laughed and said no. Bell’s Bake Shop is sure to become a Steveston hot spot. Rocanini Coffee Roasters an interview with Dawn Peng Text by Sarah Gordon

Rocanini Coffee Roasters is the new kid on the block in the busy world of Steveston coffee shops. This 1,700 square foot coffee shop, located on the corner of Moncton Street and No. 1 Road, opened on November 11th with a line up waiting at their doorstep. Owners Frank Zheng and Dawn Peng come to their new business with seven years coffee retail experience in Vancouver. After extensive marketing studies, they determined that Richmond was lacking in high quality specialty coffee and that Steveston fit their demographics with the perfect combination of families and a youthful Steveston market. Their goal? To roast beans to their highest potential. How did they choose the name Rocanini? It is in homage to Italian tradition, and is derived from the Latin word for rock, which is roca. The choice of name communicates a foundation of strength and presence. Rocanini Coffee Roasters has an extremely clean modern feeling, with white walls, high ceilings, a series of oversized black pendant lights located above the service counter and two beautiful chandeliers, which illuminate and flatter the space. There are intimate tables for two, as well as a large wooden table for groups to gather around. Frank Zheng is Rocanini’s master coffee roaster. He trained in San Francisco with the chair of the American Specialty Coffee Association. Rocanini roasts their high quality green beans, which they source largely from Africa and Central America, in their 3,500 square foot roasting facility in Vancouver. They take pride in the fact that their beans are organic, shade grown, bird friendly and they buy direct from the plantation. What makes Rocanini’s coffee stand out from the others? Foremost, Peng and Zheng take their Italian-style coffee very seriously. They have travelled extensively on “coffee trips” to source the best beans and equipment to roast and brew the ultimate cup of coffee. Peng hopes to travel to Central America to visit a plantation first hand. Rocanini’s special siphon coffee, which is the most expensive coffee on their menu, is very popular in Japan and in the United States. Peng believes that their unique model of siphon machine is the only one of its kind in Canada. The siphon coffee maker, invented in Europe 160 years ago, is currently experiencing a revival in popularity, with many in the

specialty industry taking interest. Rocanini’s baristas are specially trained to brew the handcrafted coffees offered on the menu. The siphon coffee is an interesting procedure to watch, and the result is a delight to smell and taste. For the coffee connoisseur, this is something that you would not want to corrupt by adding cream or sugar. Like wine tasting, sipping a Rocanini coffee makes you appreciate the layers of tastes coming from the artful roasting of the bean. The menu also features high quality teas and pastries baked fresh daily for Rocanini. These goodies include chocolate and almond croissants, scones, desserts, and panini. Peng and Zheng and their young daughter are proud Stevestonites. Originally, from Guangzhou, China, they came to Canada twelve years ago. They have a strong appreciation for the community, and an admiration of Steveston’s history. A visit to Rocanini Coffee Roasters will leave you with an appreciation of the fine art of coffee roasting and preparation. A happy customer reported that his coffee at Rocanini was the best Americano he had ever had and he intends to become a regular customer. It’s that time of year. The kids are in school and team sports are in full swing. Your child is having fun, learning the concept of teamwork, feeling the physical and mental benefits of exercise and making new friends. Yet, it is estimated that each year, more then three million children are injured while playing sports. Unfortunately I see a lot of them, all over our fields. It is not only important to listen to your child when they talk of a potential injury but also to teach your child how to prevent injury and get the most out of being part of the team. Here are some important things to remember as a parent and some things to look out for when your child say’s their hurt. What may be a bruise to an adult can be a serious growth plate injury in a child. Growth plates are areas of developing tissue at the end of a child’s long bones. When your child has finished growing, the growth plates are replaced by solid bone. The long bones include those in the fingers, forearms, collarbone, hips, upper legs, lower legs, ankles and feet. If any of these areas are injured, your child needs to see a doctor. If not treated, growth plate injuries can cause lasting pain and prevent bones from growing properly. About two thirds of children’s sports injuries are sprains and strains. Only about 5 percent of sports injuries involve fractures. Remember the rule RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression & Elevate). Another common injury I see is overuse injuries which are caused by repeated movements. The more time a child spends playing one sport, the more likely he or she is to develop an overuse injury. Never ignore these and always seek the advice of your doctor. The following precautions can help prevent injury: • • •
• • •
Adult supervision. Have a parent, coach or trainer with children at all times. Proper conditioning. Help match your child’s skills with the sport that best suits him or her. Make sure your child has proper training and is placed with teammates with similar skill levels who are in the same weight range. Safety equipment. One out of five serious brain injuries in children is sportsrelated. Helmets should be worn for football, baseball, bike riding and hockey. To avoid eye injuries, children who play racquet sports and basketball should wear protective eyewear. Mouth guards, athletic cups and padding also provide protection. Safe playing surfaces. Make sure all debris is removed from the playing field and that equipment is inspected before play begins. Warm-ups. Have your child warm up, cool down and stretch. Playing healthy. Make sure your child is fully healed from an injury or illness before letting him or her return to the team. Returning to a sport without being fully healed puts your child at greater risk for getting injured again. Make sure your child is fully healed and cleared by his or her doctor before returning to the playing field.
Remember the most important thing you can do as parent and as coach is listen, not just with your ears but this your eyes. How a child moves, or looks will often tell you more then what they say. If your child is injured while playing sports, see your pediatrician for proper diagnosis and treatment. Families Who Eat Together, Stay Together Text by Sarah Gordon
Eating with your family seems like such an obvious thing to do, but in fact, many of us are not making the time to do so. With busy lifestyles and family members rushing off to classes, team practices, and coming home late from work, this idyllic family portrait of sitting down to enjoy a meal together is not as reality based as it should be. Sadly, we are losing valuable time to connect with one another. Studies show that eating together as a family has great benefits for your children and teenagers. Mealtime conversations provide opportunities to share information and news of the day, as well as give extra attention to your children. Family meals foster warmth, security and love, as well as feelings of belonging. In addition, a Harvard study (Archives of Family Medicine, March 2000) showed that eating family dinners together most or all days of the week was associated with eating more healthfully. Mayor Brodie has declared February 21 Family Day in Richmond. Richmond’s Touchstone Family Association will be celebrating February 21 to 28, 2011 by launching Eating Together week. Michael McCoy, Touchstone’s Executive Director states, “Family is the first community we belong to. Strong families mean strong communities.” During Eating Together week, Touchstone’s goals are to build awareness of the variety of ways families can enjoy eating in Richmond, to help people shop for food wisely, to provide education in nutrition, cooking skills and diet, and encourage families to feed the body in order to feed the mind. Funds raised will be used in Richmond only for underfunded and non-funded programs to sustain counselling hours at Touchstone. The community is solidly behind this initiative. Partners include the City of Richmond, the Richmond Fire Department, School District No. 38, the Richmond Public Library, the Richmond Food Bank, and a growing list of restaurants. To raise awareness about Eating Together and Touchstone Family Association, Touchstone has collaborated with local restaurants to launch something similar to Dine out Vancouver. Participating restaurants will give 25 percent of a family’s bill to Touchstone. Steveston restaurants already on board include Steveston Seafood House, Mondo Eatery and Gudrun. A cookbook, produced by The Richmond Review, will be calling for recipes with have an anecdote about a memorable meal to accompany the recipe. This book will be for sale in February at Save On Foods. Trail Appliances will offer cooking classes featuring Steveston chefs Alex Tung (Tapenade Bistro), Kevin Turner (Heringer’s) and Ken Iaci (Mondo’s Eatery). Touchstone’s Eating Together website states “families who eat together, stay together”. Why not set a simple goal for your family and make more time to eat together? Steveston Santa Parade Thursday, December 23 at 7:00pm The Rotary Club of Steveston invites you to the Steveston Santa Parade!
Route starts on Hunt Street and ends at the community centre, so watch from anywhere along the route as the parade wanders through the Steveston neighbourhood. Rotarians will be collecting non-perishable food or cash donations that are put into hampers and delivered to seniors within the community. All other food is delivered to the Richmond Food Bank for regular distribution. Cash donations received are donated to the Richmond schools breakfast program. It truly is a small-town parade where neighbours come out, share hot drinks, set up portable fire pits, and give back to the community.
