There have been a few changes in the village since the last issue; Dave's Fish & Chips has a new owner, Gracie Barra has moved out of Steveston, and Luckful Nest has closed.

We look forward to the cooler days after a hot and dry summer. It’s time to bring out warm clothing and celebrate much-needed rain. We wish you all a happy fall.

Merchants Association is preparing for its fall events. October begins with the month-long Steveston Scarecrow Crawl and ends with Trick-or-Treating at participating businesses. The winner of the best scarecrow is awarded $1,000. Girls’ Night Out (November 17) is one of the most popular shopping events of the year; this fun evening focuses on strolling through the village after hours to shop and dine. December 4 is the day Santa arrives by boat at Fisherman's Wharf! Come out to watch the Christmas Classic Car Cruise, then ride on the old-fashioned horse drawn carriage around the village. Good news, the horse carriage rides will be back on for a second date on December 11, along with a dog parade. Merchants will be participating in a holiday window display contest. Stay tuned for more events throughout StevestonDecember.Community

Richmond United Voters Association, or Richmond United as the party is more commonly referred to, is a new party that you will see on the ballot for the local government and school election scheduled for October 15, Party2022.

Dedicated to the Community

Andy says, “Richmond has thrived with growth over the years. But with growth, there are also serious issues to address. Young families are having difficulty finding suitable housing, and seniors are finding it difficult to age in their homes. People are feeling unsafe as they hear stories of crime and high-speed collisions. Residents want to be engaged and involved when decisions are made. They want a livable city that supports the most vulnerable in our community.”

founder Andy Hobbs is Richmond’s newest city councillor; he was elected in a by-election in May 2021. Andy originally ran as an independent; however, for the upcoming election, he had a vision to offer Richmondites fresh and innovative ideas by assembling a diverse slate of candidates with vast experience in public and community service.

RICHMOND UNITED VOTERS ASSOCIATION:

Andy is seeking re-election along with school trustee Donna Sargent. Joining the roster for city councillors are Eric Yung and Melissa Zhang.

“Richmond United will bring a balanced perspective to council to represent a broad spectrum of voters.” Andy Hobbs

Eric Yung has lived in Richmond since 1975, where he attended elementary and high school. He has been active in many community organizations, including the International Development Assistance Society of Canada and For Children We Care fundraising committee for B.C. Children’s Hospital. He is a past voting member and chair of the Insurance Council of B.C. From 2008-2011, Eric was president of the Richmond District Parents’ Association, and in 2011 and 2014, he was elected as a School Board

“Experience is key. When you elect candidates, you want to be confident that they will be someone to represent you on council or as a school trustee.” Andy Hobbs

Andy says, “Service is engrained in me. It’s what I do. It’s what I have always done.”

the other Richmond United candidates have extensive volunteer experience.

He has volunteered for many organizations, including the Richmond Kigoos Swim Club, the Steveston Salmon Festival, the Richmond Hospital Foundation, and the Richmond Intercultural Advisory Committee. He was elected for two terms as a trustee on the Richmond School Board. Before his election to city council, Andy was the board chair of Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site Society and a director on both Tourism Richmond's and Fraser Marine Rescue Society's Likeboards.Andy,

a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry from UBC and a Ph.D. in molecular genetics from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. After receiving his doctorate, he continued his research at Harvard University in Boston, where he worked in cutting-edge gene therapy research.

He says, “It makes you more well-rounded and qualified. It helps you evaluate things more thoroughly.”

Both social responsibility and community safety come naturally to Andy; he is a retired Vancouver Police (VPD) superintendent with over 35 years of service, including a year as Transit Police Chief. Public safety and security have always been his priorities; he recognizes that the peace, prosperity, and stability we enjoy as Canadians requires vigilance.

Richmond United intends to focus on social responsibility by building a safe, livable, and inclusive community which dovetails nicely with community safety.

She has completed five terms as a school trustee and is known for being hard-working and principle centred. Donna has served as chairperson of the Board of Education’s

Other key components of Richmond United’s platform include shining a spotlight on fiscal responsibility by investing in needed infrastructure and programs and sustainability to ensure food security and plan for natural disasters.

United is committed to attainable housing solutions. Andy says, “There is a housing crisis. Housing funding and rental stock have dropped. We need to see more complexes like the new purpose-built rentals on the corner of No. 3 Road and Williams MelissaRoad.”

Melissa believes that informing, involving and inspiring all residents in city development is the key to a higher level of council services. If elected, she plans to focus on community safety, inclusivity and harmony, affordable housing and sustainability. She also intends to advocate for efficiency and transparency at city hall and on council.

Zhang moved to Richmond with her husband and daughter in 2005. She immediately became an advocate and dedicated volunteer for many local non-profit organizations. Melissa has served three terms on Richmond Cares, Richmond Gives’ board of directors, three terms as vice chair on the Richmond Sister City Advisory Committee, and has been treasurer on the Steveston Historical Society board since 2020. In addition, she has served in our community for over eight years as a Lions Club member.

Andy concludes, “The name Richmond United was not chosen by accident. It is both literal and figurative. We represent all members of our community from diverse backgrounds. The role of a city councillor and school trustee is to service the community and help www.richmondunited.cainfo@richmondunited.capeople.”

After witnessing friends move away from Richmond due to rising housing costs, Eric feels passionate that people should be able to age in the place they choose to live. While he recognizes that there are no quick fixes to housing issues, he wants to actively work on the pieces the City can get moving Richmondnow.

Donna Sargent’s name is familiar to many Richmond residents. She has resided in the city for 35 years and has been actively involved with the Richmond School District since 1991.

the Richmond School District needs strong, experienced, hardworking, and caring leadership that has a balanced view and makes decisions that are best for children. Her beliefs complement Richmond United’s platform to see students succeed by prioritizing public education and student interests.

Melissa works as an independent financial advisor. She received a bachelor’s degree in English language and literature and a master’s degree from the University of International Business and Economics.

Collagen is a type of protein in our body that is made of repeating units of 3 amino acids, Glycine, Proline, and Hydroxyproline. It is a ubiquitous, gluelike substance that is found in virtually all connective tissue, such as our skin, joints, muscle, cornea of our eyes, blood vessels, digestive tract, and even in our teeth. Although our bodies can make it, the breakdown of collagen surpasses the production of it as we age, so we have to source it from supplements in order to maintain collagen levels in our bodies. It is important to take a lower molecular weight (“kDa”), shorter collagen, or else you will not get full absorption. Each connective tissue responds to a different chain length and sequence, thus it is crucial to get the appropriate chain length of collagen for the intended therapeutic target and purpose. CanPrev uses an enzyme-based extraction process to cleave collagen chains from a pure collagen protein source, which leaves proline amino acids on the ends of the chains to assist in resisting heat and acid; the powder can be mixed easily into any hot or cold beverage.

James Gilmore Elementary is named after Brian’s great-grandfather’s brother. Brian is also related to Hugh Boyd, of Hugh Boyd Secondary fame. Patti’s family owned a drycleaning business in Steveston. Her grandfather was a volunteer firefighter and a carpenter. Her mother’s side of the family raised racehorses and cattle and had a farm in east Richmond.

Over the last twenty-seven years, Prickly Pear Garden Centre has established itself as a store locals rely on to beautify their gardens and homes and as a destination that draws people to the village year-round.

Owners and business partners Brian Gilmore and Patti Maskall founded the shop in 1995. They have witnessed many changes to the village over the years and throughout their lives in Steveston. The development of the former B.C. Packers’ site for residential use was a significant turning point for their business. In addition, the growing population led to an increase in retail stores, which has played a role in attracting more visitors to scenic Steveston. Their story is as local as it gets; both were born and raised in Steveston and are descendants of pioneer families.

Story by Sarah Gordon Photos by Tara Orr

In 1989, Brian worked at an Art Knapps store located at The Bay in Richmond, which is where he met Patti, who worked at the lawn and barbeque department. When Art Knapps pulled out of The Bay, the industrious duo submitted a proposal to run a gardening centre. After four years of running their seasonal business, they searched for a permanent year-round space. Prickly Pear Garden Centre in Steveston opened in The1995.historic

The shop is stocked with quality indoor and outdoor plants, a lovely selection of home décor, and high-end hand soaps, lotions, and candles, which make perfect gifts. Look closely, and you may spot the shop’s two black cats, Jesse and Ada.

uses included a cabinetmaker's shop (1971-1973), an oil stove manufacturer (1973-1975), West Coast Diving (1978-1981), Steveston Bottle (1983-1987), Steveston Upholstery (1988-1993), and for many years, the location was a battery shop for fishing boats.

An excellent assortment of outdoor containers will brighten your deck or doorway, or purchase a ceramic pot and create away! Charming original sculptures from a local cement supplier based in Victoria add a whimsical touch to gardens or patios.

The hard-working pair put in long hours between April through July and cut back ever so slightly for the rest of the year. Brian attends a local plant and cut flower auction in Burnaby twice a week and visits local greenhouses and growers. Patti does much of the giftware buying and plant watering. Both are grateful for their staff. Patti says, “They are an excellent group of people who live locally.”

On November 1, Prickly Pear’s team gathers for one action-packed evening to transform the store. Seasonal décor is displayed along with multiple themed trees stuffed with unique ornaments. It is a fabulous place to do holiday shopping.

Last year Prickly Pear’s Professor Pots (the little brown bat) scarecrow was awarded first prize in the Steveston Merchants Association’s Scarecrow Crawl competition. “We were honoured to win and shared the cash prize with our staff. We look forward to participating again this October,” says Patti.

The holiday season is a particularly magical time in the store.

Patti suggests visiting the shop at different times of the year as there are always wonderful things to be found. She adds, “We love hearing people say how much they enjoy the store!”
