Publisher's Note We have waved goodbye to summer, and as we welcome autumn we are continuing to do our part to stay safe while practising being kind and calm. We also experienced the added stress of having our outdoor sanctuary blanketed by smoke from distant wildfires. This month we are celebrating the 13-year anniversary of Steveston Insider. We would normally be promoting Halloween and Christmas events along with Girls’ Night Out – but this year there will be no events other than the Steveston Scarecrow Crawl which can safely take place without large crowds gathering. Watch for some merchants like A Monkey Tree and Sinfully The Best that will offer their own version of GNO and Customer Appreciation Week. We have so much to be thankful for. We are fortunate to have access to beautiful waterfront trails and parks. Our local businesses have safely welcomed us back as they carefully reopened. Bravo, Steveston! At the end of August, the community was crowned the winner of CBC's Search for Metro Vancouver's Best Neighbourhood, as determined by almost 500,000 votes cast during a six-week-long contest that started with 192 neighbourhoods across the region. We chose to feature Andy Hobbs on the cover since he was convincing in his CBC interview that Steveston was deserving.

And there’s more good news. AJ Sandhu and Indy Dhadda have opened a new butcher shop on No. 1 Road called Five Rivers Meat Company. They are eager to introduce their interpretation of the classic Indian meat shop to a wider audience. You can look forward to flavourful marinated meats to grill at home. When deciding who to feature in each issue, I am always impressed by talented business owners as I get to know their story and wonder how I have not yet showcased them. The Spotted Frog owner, Huong Nguyen, is one such talent. She operates a successful lifestyle boutique that offers a beautiful collection of high-quality Canadian made custom furniture and home décor, and she is also an awardwinning interior designer. We are saddened by the closure of Porthole, Xyclo Bistro, and Radiant Tanning Salon. Yeti Works (and Laura Galloway Design) have now moved out to the Fraser Valley after over 20 years of operating in Steveston. We welcome Language Arts Base, and soon to open new businesses Baan Lao and Sweet Surrender Gelato. The pandemic has been extremely challenging for our local businesses. As we head into the quieter months ahead, we encourage you to continue to support them so they can thrive and help keep our community vibrant. We wish everyone a safe and sane autumn. Be kind to each other. We are all in this together.

On the Cover:

Andy Hobbs Story submitted Steveston’s recent summer win in CBC’s Metro Vancouver’s best neighbourhood contest reflects the community’s belief in itself and the values others see in it. For Andy Hobbs, the Fraser River, as both a working river and a natural bounty, made Steveston hard to beat. Andy knows that community members have a long history of service and a commitment to volunteerism. At its core, that also makes Steveston a great place to live. Growing up in Richmond, riding horses and playing hockey on frozen winter ponds was idyllic, the Packers/ Colts rivalries are legendary and it all contributes to a storied history. For the past 25 years, Andy and his family have lived in Steveston and enjoy how it has retained a small town atmosphere notwithstanding population growth and development. For his family, the key for Steveston’s livability continues to be balance. This includes a commitment to its historical roots with sites like Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site and in recognizing the contributions of people from many cultural backgrounds who lived and worked here. The Nikkei stories are a moving example and illustrate the sacrifice and resilience of Steveston’s Japanese/Canadian community. While the fishing industry remains a vibrant part of the economy, Steveston’s commercial opportunities have expanded and diversified to a point where you can find shopping, dining, places to celebrate, recreation facilities, and plenty of natural beauty, without leaving Steveston. It all contributes to a great vibe where you can walk down Moncton Street or along the boardwalk and randomly bump into friends and family. Community service is the glue that gives Steveston its super strength. Events and celebrations like Steveston’s Salmon Festival and Richmond Maritime Festival have deep roots and the commitment of volunteers is crucial. 6

Andy retired from the Vancouver Police Department after more than 35 years of service and he has a long track record of working with community groups and stakeholders in Vancouver. He was inducted into the Order of Merit of the Police Forces by the Governor General of Canada, received the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal and several VPD commendations. In Richmond, while still working, Andy was elected and served two terms with the School Board, volunteered as a coach for several kids sports, and volunteered twenty years as a cancer fundraiser. He was a member and president of the Kigoos Swim Club, at the Steveston Outdoor pool, which Andy considers as one of the best activities for kids and families. Currently, he’s the Chair of Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site Society, a board member for Tourism Richmond and a board member for Steveston’s Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue (RCMSAR). In the past few years, the family has grown with the addition of three grandchildren and they all enjoy everything Steveston has to offer with its parks and amenities. Andy is confident that they will find their own paths to volunteer and to serve the community.

The Spotted Frog:

A Passion for Beautiful Spaces Story by Sarah Gordon

Photos submitted

The Spotted Frog is a business name I have always been curious about, and I was sure there must be a story behind it. Owner Huong Nguyen explains the name is multi-layered. She says, “The frog is a powerful symbol. It also has family significance. People like the image and it’s a good conversation starter.” The Spotted Frog is a lifestyle boutique that offers a beautiful collection of high-quality Canadian made custom furniture and home décor. The business model, like the company name, is multi-layered. It keeps evolving, and like the frog, it keeps hopping along.

When you meet Huong, it’s hard not to be energized by her passion for beautiful spaces. The Spotted Frog opened in 2008. It was originally located two blocks south on No. 1 Road. In 2015, it moved and it turns out the new location has been extremely advantageous. Huong says, “Furniture drives the business. We have a private loading zone and much more parking than the former location did.” “The business grew organically to include interior design. Customers would ask for my design advice,” she says. As a result, she created an in-house design studio to meet with clients about her award-winning interior design services. One of her projects was featured on HGTV and the design firm has been recognized as a winner of the Best of Houzz for eight consecutive years. Her extensive experience includes styling, decorating, renovating, and designing custom luxury homes. She comments, “We bring to life spaces that exude function, beauty, and harmonious flow.” 8

Huong’s signature look is a dynamic space innovatively mixed with various styles. She loves injecting color, patterns, and textures to create a bold and highly unique environment. The store is beautifully curated with beds, couches, chairs, tables, wall art, clocks, pillows, and other home décor. The majority of the furniture is handcrafted custom pieces, which means there are plenty of options to select from. Huong’s latest obsession is plants. She has a selection to choose from and confesses that the Swiss cheese tropical plant makes her feel happy and is her current favourite. She speculates that the downtime with COVID19 has driven more people to reconnect with nature. The relaxed Boho feel is making a comeback. As a result, you will see rattan, linens in earth tones, and a flashback to the 1970s,

macramé has returned. She says, “These are not so much trends as they are an anchor to help transform the current situation.”

“I am huge on energy flow and harmonizing it.” Huong Nguyen Huong learned a lot at IKEA where she worked for eight years in various strategic management positions. She says, "The corporate role was no longer in alignment with my new role of raising a family so I pursued my dream of opening a small business to create a work-life balance that was in favour of our family." Her children are now 10 and 13 years old. She credits her husband for running their household. Without his help, it would not be possible to juggle her dual career as a storeowner and an interior designer. When asked about the complexity of switching hats she comments, “I like diversity. I am not the type of person who can sit well.”

Operating a shop is not as simple as unlocking the door to commence the day. Huong says with a laugh, “The creative side is all me, but I also clean the toilets and wash the windows. It is not as glamorous as it seems!” She also does all of the ordering and merchandising. The scope of her design projects ranges from one well-decorated room up to a new custom home complete with furniture and accessories. The largest project she worked on was a townhouse development in Kelowna. Huong has always had an affinity for Steveston. She grew up in Vancouver and Richmond. Her parents are commercial gillnetters; they have been operating out of Steveston Harbour since 1987. Huong recalls exploring Steveston as a kid where she enjoyed picking blackberries and making risky trips over to Shady Island. Without any hesitation, she says her favourite things about Steveston are the active fishing community and the water. “It is a grounding element for me. Rivers and oceans soothe me.” She also appreciates that the village continues to remain quirky, slow, and not very gentrified.

She treasures the relationships she has built in the community. “You get to know a family intimately when you are designing their home. Making them feel happy with a space that they love is so rewarding.” Huong concludes, “I have never felt the support of the community as passionately as I have during the pandemic. People are rooting for small businesses. I felt like I had walked into a bubble of extra kindness when the store reopened after we were all forced to close.” The Spotted Frog 110-11900 No. 1 Road Richmond, BC V7E 1S9 Telephone 778-297-4663 www.thespottedfrog.ca 10

ASK A STEVESTON INSIDER I’m worried about my breathing and lung health. What will help? If you are having trouble breathing, you should seek the advice of a physician ASAP or use a telemedicine service like CloudMD (available on your phone, tablet, desktop) to assess whether you need to go to the Emergency. There is a pair of useful integrative products to help us breath easier during forest fire season, as well as minimize long-term damage to our lungs. Omega Alpha’s “Resprit” and “Lung Flush” are two liquid herbal formulas based on Traditional Chinese Medicine theory that could help ease your breathing whether it is due to seasonal allergies or periodic air pollutants. Resprit’s soothing herbs such as chrysanthemum, peppermint, and Japanese honey suckle can nourish the airways and facilitate breathing. It works great for asthma sufferers and can be used in conjunction with your prescription inhalers. The long-term effects of chronic inhalation of air pollutants is discerning. Lung Flush’s Luo Han Guo, skullcap, and mulberry leaf, among others, can help maximize the lungs’ capacity to detoxify the polluted air, and minimize the chances of toxins depositing in your lung tissues. It is meant for chronic therapy. 16

AJ Sandhu

Indy Dhadda

Five Rivers Meat Company: East 'Meats' West Story by Sarah Gordon

Photos submitted

In these crazy times, we need more good news stories, and this is one of them. This is the story of AJ Sandhu and Indy Dhadda, friends and business partners whose combined energy and enthusiasm could launch a rocket into space. In June they came up with a business plan to form Five Rivers Meat Company, Steveston’s newest butcher shop with an exciting twist. It all began with a conversation about meat. They originally connected through their love of food and common British interests. Both men are of Indian descent and were finding it difficult to source quality marinated meats that met their foodie standards and did not require a drive to Surrey. Indian food has always been popular in England, but through the years it has crossed over into 26

the mainstream. Indy says, “Brits love it, it’s huge. They have taken it to such a high level and have upped the game.” When Indy arrived in Canada he looked for the same calibre of Indian butcher shop but could not find it, so he and AJ decided to bring a little of it here. Indy was born in the United Kingdom. Four years ago he got married and moved to Richmond. AJ was also born in the U.K. but has lived the majority of his life in Richmond; he and his family have close ties within the community. His three sons were involved in minor sports in Richmond and AJ managed sports teams locally. The Sandhu family lives near Steveston and has always had aspirations of opening a business in the village.

“One thing led to another with our love of food,” Indy says.

he was instantly captivated. When he and AJ stumbled upon a storefront for lease on No. 1 Road it drove their decision to launch their business.

Although the partners have full-time careers, they decided to go into overdrive and launch Five Rivers Meat Company.

They knew Steveston was the perfect community for Five Rivers Meat Company. Indy explains, “Quality food is important to us. Richmond needs a butcher like this.”

Their aim is to pay careful attention to traditions while embracing all things local. They are eager to introduce their interpretation of the classic Indian meat shop to a wider audience - the perfect east ‘meats’ west. Indy’s wife introduced him to Steveston, and

AJ and Indy have dreams of eventually opening other locations. Steveston will be their flagship store and base. Down the line, they intend to sell spices, marinades, and condiments. As well, they plan to sell apparel such as butcher blocks, aprons, and totes.

The business name celebrates the Punjab, which means Five (Punj) Rivers (ab).

The menu includes chicken, lamb, goat, seafood, Maui ribs as well as halal and vegan options.

Paralleling the businesses’ name, the shop will offer five signature marinades, inspired and named after the rivers that flow through the northern region of India. Indy describes the area as “the breadbasket of India that is known for its flavours and food.” This is very much a family run business. AJ’s brother, Mak, was actively involved in the renovations to transform the space. He will work in the shop and be the marinade specialist. AJ’s wife, Raman, comes from a professional accounting background and is assisting with the business behind the scenes.

AJ’s mother, Surinder, developed the secret family recipes. Indy says, “She is a classic cook. We have learned a lot from her.” 28

Five Rivers’ perfectly marinated meats are flavourful and complex with fragrant aromas and colours. Marinating overnight helps develop flavours, and rest assured, different heat levels will be offered to accommodate all palates. Spices will also be blended on site. They are building on the barbecue culture as so many West Coasters love grilling year-round. Simply purchase your meat and take it home to put on the bbq; you don’t have to spend time marinating it yourself. In the future, they also hope to offer online delivery within Richmond.

It’s been a labour of love for the industrious partners. Indy says, “We have very visual ideas that we are very clear about. We are building a brand.” The space has been designed with a craft brewery look that suits Steveston to a tee. They loaded up and transported reclaimed wood from Abbotsford to become a feature wall with a map of the five rivers and another wall features the shop’s logo. Industrial pendant lighting complements the space along with brick accent walls, black ceilings with open venting, and an Italian tile floor that looks like wood planks.

Indy remarks, “Three months ago we went from a list of 10 big things to do. Now we have 100 little things to do. It has taken on a life of its own!” There has been genuine excitement about the opening of this new Steveston shop. “By executing this well, things will go well for us. There has been amazing feedback from people walking by,” Indy. As well, the buzz on social media has been very supportive.

They believe in supporting the local economy and intend to source many of their products from Lower Mainland suppliers. Their goal is to open for business in early October. It won’t be long before the aromatic wafts of meat grilling on barbecues will be drifting through the air. This will be a flavourful fall ahead!

The partners are thrilled to be in Steveston. Indy comments, “We want to fit in with the businesses that are already here and we would like to form partnerships when possible.”

While modern technology allows us to communicate in the blink of an eye, there remains something special about family and friends opening their mailboxes and finding a letter, postcard, or parcel sent by you. If you do your mailing at the Steveston Village Post Office, it’s not just the person receiving mail who gets a warm and genuine experience. Located inside the Steveston Museum on the corner of Moncton Street and First Avenue, you will receive exceptional personalized customer service surrounded by the ambience of a beautiful and iconic 1905 heritage building. And don’t forget, by supporting the Steveston Village Post Office, you also support the heritage events and programs offered by the Steveston Historical Society. These include the winter Songs in the Snow concert series and the summer Steveston Alive! Walking Tour Vignettes.

With the holidays coming, make sure you give your cards and gifts plenty of time to reach their overseas destinations. The Steveston Village Post Office is open 7 days a week for all your holiday postal needs – 9:30am to 5:00pm Mondays to Saturdays, and noon to 4:00pm on Sundays.

We are excited to welcome back our community to the Steveston Post Office in Metro Vancouver’s Best Neighbourhood! For more information about the contest, which saw Steveston take 61% of the votes in the final round, see the CBC article here: www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/ best-neighbourhood-contest-winner1.5701896?cmp=rss The Steveston Museum and Tourism Richmond Visitor Centre will remain closed for now.
