Publisher’s Note Kerrisdale village has a magical quality year round but there’s always a little extra sparkle during the holiday season. As hard as shopping malls work to duplicate the “it’s the most wonderful time of the year” atmosphere, it comes naturally to this village filled with independent businesses that go the extra mile for their customers. Every weekend in December the Kerrisdale Business Association (KBA) provides free horse drawn carriage rides, strolling musicians and visits from Santa and his elf. On December 18, strap on your skates as the KBA hosts “Gliding on Ice,” a free skate at Kerrisdale Arena. Part of the festive experience is admiring the beautifully decorated store windows. Judges from the KBA will be out on December 7 to award the best decorated window. In this issue we feature Thomas Hobbs Florist, one of Vancouver’s most prestigious floral shops. On the cover Courtney Lando takes a peek at their beautiful Christmas window display. Thomas Hobbs Florist has been a Kerrisdale fixture since 1975.
Kerrisdale resident Helen Rivero recently purchased the business and she and her team carry on the tradition of creating the most exquisite arrangements. We also profile Barra 41. Restaurant management is second nature to John Pavlakis who has been involved with his family’s business, Minerva’s, since he was a teenager. Floral Masterpieces For Any Occasion Story by Sarah Gordon Photos by Sandra Steier Kerrisdale resident Helen Rivero was a regular customer and a big fan of the shop. She had attended floral arranging classes with Sullivan, and when she discovered the business was for sale in the spring of 2015 Rivero decided not to let the opportunity pass. Rivero moved to Vancouver 10 years ago from Venezuela. She was a Montessori teacher and was ready for a change. The busy business owner is also the mother of a one-year-old son named Jasper; when he visits the shop he garners as much attention as the floral arrangements. In addition to being the new owner of the Kerrisdale shop, she also opened a second location last year at the Sheraton Wall Centre, which is cleverly called Wall Flowers.
Entering Thomas Hobbs Florist is a delight to the senses. The experience begins at the front doorstep where tastefully displayed plants and bouquets tempt you to come inside to see more stunning arrangements. The gorgeous heritage building was once home to the Toronto Dominion Bank and two vaults remain in the basement as evidence of days gone by. The magnificent architecture includes high ceilings, two huge storefront windows that are a designer’s dream, and a spiral staircase leading up to a meeting area used to consult with clients about their floral needs. It is a beautiful environment fit for one of Vancouver’s most prestigious floral shops. Thomas Hobbs Florist has been a Kerrisdale fixture since 1975. Thomas Hobbs, the namesake behind the business, established the shop and it became one of Vancouver’s most respected florists. He sold the business in 1993 to Maureen Sullivan who continued to build on the company’s reputation. 6
When Helen Rivero purchased the business many of Thomas Hobbs Florist experienced staff continued on, including store manager, Jamey McDonald. Raised in a small town in northern Ontario, McDonald thanks his grandmother for cultivating a lifelong passion for all things floral; when McDonald was a child she gave him his own garden plot. His career blossomed when he moved to Toronto and worked for a high-end florist shop in the fashionable Rosedale district. When he moved to Vancouver in 2004 he had his sights set on working at Thomas Hobbs Florist – he applied and was hired. McDonald is the shop’s creative head. He is responsible for store merchandising, seasonal concepts, and the daily running of the store. He is also responsible for the professional and eye-catching seasonal window displays.

The shop is known for its creative and aesthetically pleasing designs, which range from contemporary and clean to English country style arrangements. Quality seasonal flowers often influence designs, as do seasonal materials, which may appear in an arrangement.
Cut amaryllis, red ilex berries and holly incorporated into floral arrangements make a winter display merry. Rivero and McDonald mention that peonies, garden roses and ranunculus are always popular choices. Amongst all of the beautiful flowers they carry, some of their winter favourites include anemones, callas and tulips. Rivero says, “The designs are often guided by seasonal colour.” The shop is also known for its excellent assortment of beautiful orchids. Fifteen staff work between the Kerrisdale and downtown Vancouver shop. Numerous languages are spoken including Cantonese, French, Japanese, Mandarin and Spanish. All of the staff are talented floral arrangers and offer excellent customer service.
As early as January, McDonald and the staff are at work developing design concepts for the following Christmas, and by early November the entire store transforms for the festive season. The store’s show stopping window designs (which are always decked in holiday finery) have been recipients of the Kerrisdale Business Association’s Best Dressed Window contest a number of times. Watch for the Winter Wonderland and Chestnuts Roasting on Open Fire themed windows, which will have passers by pressing their noses against the window and feeling the spirit of the season.
“People come in for our specialty items such as Old World Christmas ornaments every year.” Helen Rivero Actively involved in giving back to the community, the shop donates flowers and McDonald and other staff volunteer their time to B.C. Children’s Hospital’s Crystal Ball. McDonald says, “We are very proud to be part of this event.” Thomas Hobbs Florist also participates in

Restaurant Lounge Raises the Barra Story by Sarah Gordon

John Pavlakis often gets asked what barra means. He explains that a colloquial Greek way of saying, “Let’s go to the bar” is “Pame stin barra.” He thought this would be the perfect name for his family’s latest venture, a restaurant lounge, which opened in August 2015. The 41 gives a shout out to the avenue where the business is located. John’s father, Nonda Pavlakis, opened the neighbouring business, Minerva’s, in 1975. The well-loved restaurant is known for its hearty Mediterranean dishes and popular pizza menu featuring 29 choices.
The Pavlakis family have had their entrepreneurial feet planted firmly in Kerrisdale for 41 years.
mother Kay, his grandfather Steve Stavridis, and his aunt Susan Blair, are actively involved on the Minerva’s side. The family restaurant is all John Pavlakis has ever known. He was born into the business. He worked at Minerva’s during high school bussing tables, and then signed on full time after graduating. He laughs when he says, “My dad told me that I had to try at least one other job in the real world before committing to the business so I worked in a salmon cannery for a summer. I was happy to come back to the restaurant!” John Pavlakis was raised in Kerrisdale and is proud to continue to call the community
Like his father, John Pavlakis is affable and charming. They have both been blessed with the fine art of making their role as restaurateurs look effortless and as a result their loyal clients - and there are many of them - feel right at home. It is the love of their trade that fuels this father and son partnership, although the family alliance stems beyond this dynamic duo as John’s 16

home. He enjoys going out for coffee and running into regular customers. He mentions, “It’s like living in a small town.” Long time Kerrisdale residents will remember that for many years Minerva’s neighbouring business was an ice cream parlour and diner. It has changed hands a few times (Big Scoop, Mr. Robert’s Ice Cream Parlour and Art’s Place) since the 1970s. When Art’s Place closed in 2015 it seemed fortuitous to lease the corner location and open a companion restaurant to Minerva’s, with a contemporary twist. John Pavlakis was aware the neighbourhood needed a splash of nightlife as the streets became quiet awfully early when shops and restaurants close for the day. Barra 41 stays open later than other restaurants in the area, giving residents a place to enjoy a nightcap and a snack. The modern restaurant lounge features seating for 35 customers. A large glass garage door window, which opens in warmer months, faces West 41 Avenue. Red bar stools, black tables, industrial pendant lighting, a tin ceiling, four big screen televisions, and of course a well stocked bar, create an inviting and cozy atmosphere. A clever renovation merged the two spaces
through an interior glass door that opens with a handle and is also wall mounted so it slides and disappears - this allows customers to flow between the spaces and patronize both establishments if they wish. In addition, the renovation created a common prep kitchen. Some customers make an evening out of it, starting at Barra 41, and then moving over to Minerva’s for dinner and finishing back at Barra 41 for a final drink.
Don’t be fooled by the name, Barra 41 is not just a bar. It is a licensed restaurant, which serves food from lunch onwards (until “late”). Customers of all ages are welcome. One of John Pavlaki’s menu recommendations is the Grilled Halloumi Salad. Halloumi is a cheese from Cyprus, and is delicious when grilled and combined with arugula and vine ripened tomatoes. He also suggests trying their popular meatballs, grilled lamb chops and of course their legendary pizzas. Barra 41’s menu offers a range of nibbles, meze

and Barra 41 is a great way for him to get creative.”
and entrees, and if you are craving something specifically from Minerva’s kitchen it is entirely possible to order it. The drink menu includes a selection of domestic and international wine, hand crafted cocktails, craft beers and non-alcoholic selections. Regarding menu development, John Pavlakis points out, “Minerva’s menu is steeped in tradition. Many of the dishes have been there for 40 years as people have come to expect them.” Barra 41’s menu gives him room to experiment. Nonda Pavlakis enjoys travelling and is trying to slow down a bit, but he thoroughly enjoys the social aspect of the family business and likes to come in to say hello. He says, “I am very proud of my son for pursuing something that he has wanted to do for a long time. He is very passionate about good food and wine

He says, “I love coming to work and seeing our regular customers.” John Pavlakis mentions how hard his family has worked to keep the tradition going. Nonda Pavlakis has a vision that his son will keep the family legacy going for the next forty years, and with the success the two restaurants are experiencing, this seems highly plausible. Tanryn McMaster with Francis Henson Photos by Sandra Steier In September 2016, Taryn McMaster took home the title of Kerrisdale Idol alongside long-time friend and duet partner Francis Henson. The duo performed two songs: “Confetti” by Tori Kelly and “If It Kills Me” by Jason Mraz - a combination of tunes that attests to the pair’s musical diversity. Taryn and Francis have been performing together since 2012, leaning on one another’s music skills to grow together. Mutually influenced by R&B music, Francis lends a jazzy hand to their musical creations, while Taryn pushes for strong melodic hooks and challenging harmonies. Currently working independently of one another, Francis is a Port Moody based songwriter, singer and guitar major in the Jazz Studies program at Capilano University. In October 2016, he started recording his first solo album (to be released in next spring), which features 11 tracks of original material with modern pop and R&B melodies accompanied by jazzinspired chord changes. Two tracks on his album will feature Taryn on vocals. Taryn resides in Richmond B.C., and is hard at work launching her new two-piece band, The Low Raggedy, alongside songwriter Blake Unruh. The pair, both graduates of the Contemporary Music & Technology program at Selkirk College, met while studying in Nelson, B.C. and found an undeniable musical
chemistry when placed in a song-writing ensemble together. The pair can be heard in their first recording titled “Just Call My Name,” on Blake’s selftitled album Blake Unruly. Currently, the duo is busy building their brand and working to play all around the Lower Mainland. They plan to film their first music video in early 2017.

A Little Night Music Orchestra: 44 Years and Going Strong Story by Sarah Gordon

A Little Night Music Orchestra has an interesting history. In 1972 founder Derek MacDermot began a Vancouver School Board night school course, which he called A Little Night Music. The initial session totaled 11 participants, with MacDermot playing the piano as well as conducting. The program was so popular it attracted 45 musicians the following term. After 17 years operating as a night school program at Kitsilano Secondary School, MacDermot decided to take A Little Night Music to the next level as a year-round community orchestra, on a completely volunteer basis. He spent 30 years on the podium until he retired in 2002, and sadly he passed away the following year. His legacy lives on and A Little Night Music Orchestra performs three times a year at its Kerrisdale home base, Magee Secondary School’s theatre. Peter Stigings took over the position of conductor and music director in September

2002. He first met MacDermot in the early 1970s; Stigings was teaching music at Lord Byng Secondary and MacDermot was teaching at King George. Stigings deeply admired his predecessor.
“Derek conducted, acted as treasurer, librarian, music educator and handled recruitment and publicity for their performances. He was a model music educator and was dedicated to his craft.” Peter Stigings He recalls, “When I came on board in 2002, I had very big shoes to fill. One of the first things I organized was an elected board so that we could apply for charitable tax status and divide up the workload. This resulted in me being able to focus mainly on the music

They had literally outgrown their former space at Holy Trinity Anglican Church Community Centre. Stigings taught music at Magee Secondary for 24 years and retired as chair of the Fine Arts department and director of bands at Magee in 1999. Subsequently, he joined the Faculty of Education at the University of British Columbia as a sessional lecturer and faculty advisor. In 2013 Stigings took leave for a term and the orchestra’s co-director, Chris Haas, stepped in to assume the conducting responsibilities. Haas is the department head of Magee Secondary’s music department and the director of bands. Stigings says, “This was the beginning of a musical marriage with both Chris and myself being equally responsible for the leadership of this community orchestra.” This

has
never
received government funding. A Little Night Music Orchestra is supported entirely by the members whose annual fees cover the orchestra’s operating expenses. In addition, in the company’s 44 year history they have never charged admission to attend concerts. Stigings and Haas are appreciative of the orchestra’s active board of directors and for the assistance of the Magee Music Society, which helps with post-concert receptions.
What was once a small group of musicians has grown to a 60 member orchestra of committed performers with varying degrees of experience. A Little Night Music Orchestra is comprised of adults and students. Remarkably, players range in age from 18 to 88 years old. Since Stigings became involved he has made a point of taking in younger performers. In turn, by drawing in a diverse age range of musicians the audience base has revitalized as family and friends come out to support the orchestra.

Musicians come from across the Lower Mainland and as far away as Maple Ridge and Point Roberts to be a part of this community orchestra. Interested musicians of varying levels of experience are welcome to attend two to three rehearsals, and if there is an opening they will be invited to join. Currently there are openings for bassoon, timpani, tuba and viola.
“There is no audition process to join A Little Night Music Orchestra. We call ourselves an intermediate community orchestra.” Peter Stigings Stigings mentions, “In my current role as co-director, I find that the enthusiasm and energy exhibited by adults who want to perform to the best of their ability and share their musical talents as a large ensemble with those that attend our concerts is most
gratifying and enriching. We collectively want to make a contribution to the musical culture of Greater Vancouver.” Repertoire ranges from symphony to overtures, musical theatre and light classics. A Little Night Music Orchestra performs three concerts a year at Magee Secondary’s 525 seat theatre. They share concerts with Magee Choir, Magee String and Magee Wind Ensemble. In addition, they perform at the Ladner Bandfest in June. A Little Night Music Orchestra’s Christmas concert with guests, The Magee Chamber Choir, is scheduled for Monday December 12 at 7:00 p.m. The program features Carol of the Bells, Fantasia on We Three Kings, Beethoven’s 5th Symphony, 1st Movement, Evening Prayer by Humperdinck, Sound of Music Medley, Christmas carols and an audience sing-along.
