Martin and Barbara Smith, owners of The Perfect Gift/Martin Smith Jewellers, left their native Johannesburg in 1990 partially due to the political situation and also because they dreamt of living in North America. With four young children ranging in age from 6 to 12 years old it was a big move to a country they had no association with, however they immediately fell in love with Vancouver. They opened The Perfect Gift in 1996 and have been successfully running their business ever since. November marks the first anniversary at the West 41st location. The original shop was situated near Choices on West 57th Avenue for six years. They shifted to Balsam Street for another ten years. Last year the Smiths seized the opportunity to move to the “high street” and are thrilled with this spot. They feel that they have found the perfect home for The Perfect Gift. The Smiths have been married for 37 years and make a great team. Martin Smith says,

“this is a very personal business” where customers enjoy engaging with the owners, hence they both can be found at the business almost without fail. Their loyal customers have become friends and travel from across Metro Vancouver to visit the store. The couple takes pride in bending over backwards to offer customers an exceptional shopping experience. Martin Smith is a Master Goldsmith and a G.I.A. Diamond Graduate. He completed a five-year apprenticeship at Freedman’s Jewellers, a prestigious company in Johannesburg, before going on to build two prominent companies of his own in South Africa. As a highly skilled master of his trade and together with his team of two goldsmiths, Martin Smith has established a reputation for his unique designs. by Sarah Gordon photos by Sandra Steier Is it your dream to rub a magic lantern and have a professional chef appear when you are taxed for meal ideas, or you are hoping to ‘wow’ your guests but are drained for time or inspiration? While Stock Up owners Cameron Greaves and his wife Simone Greaves are not empowered with genie magic, they have satisfied many customers’ wishes since 2007 when they pooled their business and culinary talents. Stock Up is a unique business concept offering customers the option to dine in the café or take home ready-made meals to reheat and enjoy; think comfort food that ‘you’ toil over
on the fly. These meals are prepared using the freshest quality ingredients with no additives or preservatives. Cooking is Cameron Greaves’ creative outlet. Food is equivalent to his artist’s palette and depending on what his suppliers have to offer, or what strikes his fancy that day; the selection of ready-made meals produced in Stock Up’s kitchen is always fresh and original. There are some well-loved mainstays such as shepherd’s pie, butter chicken, pulled pork, pastas and risotto, however other selections vary according to the chef’s inspiration and creativity, of which there is no shortage. The day I visited the refrigerated case was laden with tempting creations including wild mushroom ravioli, braised beef short ribs, roast pork loin stuffed with provolone, spinach and red pepper, and lamb osso buco with roasted root vegetables and mashed potatoes. Stock Up offers full dine in breakfast, lunch and dinner menus and is conveniently open seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Cameron Greaves began his culinary career at age 14 as a prep cook at Grouse Mountain where he developed a passion for the industry. He finished training at BCIT and completed his apprenticeship with Gerard Page, of La Belle Sole Restaurant and Bernard Casavant, the long-standing chef at Château Whistler.
this is also where Cameron Greaves met Vogel’s daughter, Simone who had trained in hospitality and tourism management. For a time the restaurant was a family affair with Simone, her mother, her sister, and Cameron Greaves all actively involved. Eventually the couple married, took ownership of 1066 Hastings and ran the business.
Subsequently, Cameron Greaves worked at a number of high-end restaurants, which led to his appointment as chef at 1066 Hastings Restaurant. Owner Gunnar Vogel introduced him to the business side of the industry, and
An opportunity to work in the Cayman Islands arose and the Greaves set off on what ended up being a six-year work adventure. Subsequently, they returned back to Vancouver to start a family. After years of working long hours at restaurants and catering, the Greaves brainstormed how they could reinvent their lives while still working in the food industry. They deduced that owning a storefront with stable hours would be more conducive to family life. When the Stock Up location came available (it was formerly home to a furniture store) the couple knew they had found the perfect location. It is near their home in Kerrisdale, and is conveniently situated next to a produce shop where Cameron Greaves sources small orders.

PURDY’S CHOCOLATES: A KERRISDALE TRADITION SINCE 1953 by Sarah Gordon photos by Sandra Steier When Purdy’s Kerrisdale store manager, Viju Eswaran, and I recently met we exchanged stories about our respective moves to Vancouver in the mid-1970s. Coincidentally, one of the first things that we both learned about the city was the existence of Purdy’s Chocolates. She quickly became acquainted with the chocolate shop, while I discovered Choklit Park on the Fairview Slopes and the neighbouring Purdy’s chocolate factory (which relocated to Kingsway in 1982). The West 7th Avenue chocolate mecca was three blocks from my home and as a child I thought I had hit the jackpot to live in a city that apparently worshipped chocolate. Eswaran takes great pride in being the store manager and upholding Purdy’s tradition of excellence. With a warm laugh she says, “Purdy’s is a very sweet place to work” and points out that 99.9% of customers are happy in this environment. Eswaran thoroughly enjoys working with the public, and she and the other five staff members are dedicated to helping make special memories for their customers. From children to seniors, all ages patronize the business. The staff know many of their

loyal customers by name and are even aware of some of their favourite selections. Eswaran enjoys hearing clients recollect coming to the shop as children with their grandparents for a special treat. The Kerrisdale Purdy’s team is dedicated to personal service, which includes community outreach. The chocolates are made from the finest ingredients sourced from around the world including Belgian chocolate, Australian ginger, Indian cashews, and dairy products from farms across Western Canada. Care is taken to ensure each batch of creams curls just right; nuts are roasted to perfection; caramel flavour bursts as it fills your mouth; and Hedgehogs have that silky, smooth texture that customers have come to expect. purchases sky rocket including Valentine’s Day, Easter, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Custom chocolates are also available during the Moon Festival, Diwali, Ramadan and Hanukkah. Richard Carmon Purdy is the man we need to thank for beginning this Vancouver tradition. In 1907 he opened his first chocolate shop on Robson Street, and as his reputation for superb chocolates grew so did the number of shops. In the 1930s the South Granville location opened, followed by the Kerrisdale shop in 1953. This was a huge cause for Kerrisdale chocolate lovers to celebrate as they no longer had to make the trek to Granville Street or downtown Vancouver. In 1963 Charles Flavelle and Eric Wilson purchased the company. It all began innocently enough, with two young mothers, Lucile Flavelle and Shirley Wilson, strolling with their babies in the neighbourhood where they lived. One day they struck up a casual conversation and soon became friends. They introduced their husbands to each other, which began the lifelong friendship and successful business partnership of Charles Flavelle and Eric Wilson. They knew of Purdy's reputation for fine-quality chocolates and
when they learnt that the company was going on the block, they sensed an opportunity and purchased Purdy’s Chocolates in 1963. The two men remained business partners from 1963 until 1996. Charles and Lucile Flavelle’s daughter Karen Flavelle joined Purdy’s as Executive VicePresident in 1994, offering an arsenal of valuable experience from her time spent at General Mills and Cara Operations. In 1996 the Flavelle family amicably bought out the business from Eric Wilson and Purdy’s once again became a family-owned business. In 1997 Karen Flavelle bought the business from her father and became the company’s sole owner and President. In 2012 Peter

Higgins (who has been with Purdy’s since 1998) became Purdy’s President, and he also holds the enviable title of Chocolate Scientist. Meanwhile, Karen Flavelle continues to be the owner and is also the company’s Chief Executive Officer.

The Flavelle family is very much rooted in this community where they live. Charles and Lucile Flavelle visit Kerrisdale Purdy’s and like to shop locally. Both Karen Flavelle and Peter Higgins make a point of dropping by the store and getting to know the staff.

It is reassuring to know the more things change the more they stay the same. Charles Flavelle’s corporate philosophy has not strayed in fifty years from the time he made the following statement, “Purdy’s will be a place where people like to gather, as in a community, to work effectively at jobs they like and are challenged by, amongst people they like to be with. We will work to make Purdy’s a secure place; one where, if continually successful in the market place, then there will always be security of employment and an appropriate living standard provided.” On the home front, Eswaran says that while there have been plenty of changes in Kerrisdale with stores coming and going,
new residential construction and a change in demographics as more young families move into the community, people continue to support this well-loved business year round. The 20s Model: Kirby When you are in your 20s, my advice is to show off your legs. I mean, really you might as well show them off while you can. This year's trends are cute, short leather skirts, sheer tops and metallic features, perfect for the holidays. A tip for the younger generation is to wear ankle booties with your short skirts and if you prefer warmth in the winter…opaque tights. Forget the fussy clutch and wear a small cross-shoulder purse that you can sling over your body and dance all night. Definitely dance all night.
The 30s Model: Serena When you are in your 30s, it's all about dressing appropriately. If you have children but you may still want to enjoy a little nightlife. Invest in a great cocktail dress. Whether a bright colour for the season or a classic black cocktail dress my advice is to get one that you love, not one that you think is just ok. If you have to spend a little more, well frankly, you deserve it. This year try a sequin jacket like this one and for women in their 30s…stiletto heels, if you can manage them are a must.

The 40s Model: Nooshin When you are in your 40s it's all about the right pants. Forget the cocktail dress this season and opt for slim leather pants and heels. Trending this year is leather everything and we are seeing leather pants at just about any occasion. Pair them with a feather top like this one, or a silky metallic one, add a fantastic statement heel and you will have perfect understated elegance.
The 50s-60s Model: Jane I love the confidence that women in their 50s and 60s project. That is why I think cocktail dresses work best in this area. A perfectly tailored dress that shows your best features can be show-stopping. This year sway away from black and try burgundy or purple. Warmer colours look great. Don't forget a clutch. So often a great outfit is undermined by a terrible purse, and the finishing elements can really make your outfit. Also when you are considering what to wear to cover your arms try a faux fur coat or bolero. Leave the pashmina at home.

While you may not like the fussiness of dresses or skin-tight pants, a great black turtle neck, slim pants and a fabulous coat is, in my opinion, the best way to go. A patent leather flat shoe is a new way to be comfortable yet chic, and this year you will be right on trend as patent flats are making a come back.
