The Kerrisdale Business Association hosts their annual free Spring Skate and then the ice will be removed for the semi-anual Kerrisdale Antiques Fair and Play Palace.

After 40 years at his former West Boulevard location, Graeme McKenney recently reopened Framing and Art Centre on West 41st Avenue. His daughter Victoria McKenney’s successful interior design business, Enviable Designs, has also relocated to this bright and airy space.

Deterring Property Crime by James Morrison, Kerrisdale Community Police Centre activity so that suspicious activities are not overlooked.
Have you ever found yourself a victim of crime? Maybe even thought about standing up to criminals? Well, you are certainly not alone in wanting to do so. Break and enters (BNE) result in more than just the loss of personal property. Victims are often left feeling violated and insecure in the places that they once felt the safest. Of note, property crime is one of the most common and costly types of crime affecting communities in Vancouver, but usually goes unnoticed in the media. The security of your home and the prevention of property crime begin at the individual level; it begins with you! There are a number of simple ways to deter or significantly reduce the risk. In addition, a unified community effort greatly enhances any preventative measures taken. Here is a great opportunity to learn something new, help your community, and protect yourself from becoming a victim of a very real issue in Kerrisdale.
Then, increased levels of community participation can lead to “Block Watch” program opportunities. This program (which is partnered with the Vancouver Police Department) has aided communities by reducing crime rates to a greater degree compared to those communities which are not involved with the program. Home safety ultimately starts with you by making sure all your doors and windows are locked, dark areas of your property (i.e. doorways) are illuminated, trees and shrubs are trimmed so that doors and windows are more visible from the street, curtains and blinds are closed at night, and all exterior doors are equipped with wide-angle peepholes and deadbolt locks. These types of efforts are known as Target Hardening, which makes property less appealing for potential criminals. Even the slightest preventative efforts can go a long way in reducing the likelihood of a B&E, since perpetrators tend to look for the easiest targets. Furthermore, many property crimes are acts of opportunity, so denying immediate access is a great first step to reducing these opportunities. The main focus for any preventative efforts on an individual level should target doors and windows, since these are the typical entry points for criminals.
Start by getting to know your neighbours these people are vital to ensuring the safety of your home by acting as another set of eyes and ears that can alert you to any suspicious activity going on while you are away. Next, sharing information about the community is a useful way to get a much clearer picture of “normal” community
Every step you take in home security is a step in the right direction. The efforts you make to ensure the safety and security of your property will certainly serve your best interests. As the saying goes, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”. In this case, the small preventative measures taken on your part will not only aid in protecting yourself, but your community as well. 14

Light The Store:
Contemporary Lighting For Your Home by Sarah Gordon photos by Sandra Steier Many great ideas begin with a light bulb popping up over someone’s head. In Zane Kerzner’s case, his light bulb moment occurred 27 years ago when he saw the potential in working at, and eventually purchasing, his brother’s lighting store, which Kerrisdale knows as Light the Store.
Some lighting stores have an overwhelming feeling with every square inch used for display, making it hard to focus. Here you will find each light fixture has room to breathe, and can be appreciated on an individual basis. You will also find quality products to fit all budgets.
Mark Kerzner originally opened the shop in 1980 (it was then called Lighting Land) on West Broadway. Zane Kerzner had been working in a pulp mill in Grand Prairie, Alberta when he had a major career diversion that led him to Vancouver and into retail.
Zane Kerzner emphasizes that this is a contemporary lighting store. You will not find trendy designs that will be dated a few years down the road, nor will you find crystal chandeliers. When asked about heritage homes and whether Light the Store’s fixtures will suit this style of home he confidently says, “New mixes well with old.”
When his brother moved to Phoenix, Arizona, Zane Kerzner purchased the shop and carried on the family business. The world of lighting was not foreign to either of them, as their father also pursed this line of work in their hometown, Toronto.
One innovation in the world of lighting he is particularly excited about is the LED light bulb. This digital technology has come a long way in a very short time. LED light bulbs have an incredibly long life (some can last up to 50,000 hours) meaning you could go up to 20 years without

Zane Kerzner’s two colleagues, Greg Chambers and David Leeming, are an integral part of the team.
He points out that the store is known for selling quality light bulbs. “We get excited about them because they allow us to sell fixtures.”
Greg Chambers has been with the company for 21 years and David Leeming has been on board for 12 years. Combined with Zane Kernzer’s 27 years in the industry, the three men are knowledgeable in their field.
As an example of how a bulb is integral to the success of a light fixture Zane Kernzer recounts the story of a customer who bought a chandelier online. Much to the client’s horror he overloaded it with high watt bulbs and melted the dimmer. This was a huge lesson in exercising caution when ordering online and a reminder of the value of good old-fashioned customer service.

This system is used for ambient, accent and task lighting and is invaluable for illuminating art and kitchens. The Flamenca LED table light falls into the world of decorative lighting. Wilson Telford received his Bachelor of Business Administration from Langara College in 2009. Subsequently he received his Chartered Accountant designation from the Institute of Chartered Accountants in 2013. He has over 10 years of accounting experience ranging from small business bookkeeping to conducting assurance engagements for large not for profit entities.

Telford Associates is a father and son team. Wayne Telford founded the company 40 years ago. Wayne Telford has a short commute to work as he lives locally. He enjoys being a part of Kerrisdale which he describes as, “relaxed with a friendly flair.” Meanwhile Wilson Telford resides in Squamish and commutes daily. Before his move he spent many years living in Kerrisdale and enjoys the small town feeling of the community where everything is within walking distance. In their free time the hard working chartered accountants enjoy getting out from behind their desks. Wilson Telford likes working on his house, walking on the trails in the Squamish area with his wife and their bulldog Cash, and hanging out by the river or fishing in a lake. Wayne Telford enjoys spending time with his family, travelling and computer programming.
While February through April tends to be very busy due to the April 30 income tax deadline, Wayne Telford indicates, “Corporate and other work keeps us on our toes for the remainder of the year.” They point out they are always happy to welcome new clients.
