Publisher’s Note It has been a perfect summer in Kerrisdale with plenty of sunshine and just the right amount of rain. Now we look forward to leaves turning magnificent shades of red, orange and yellow. Fall is the perfect time to settle back to our routines of work or school. As the days get shorter we look forward to the cozy feeling of evenings spent at home and the comfort of lighting the fireplace, putting on a sweater and cooking hearty meals. The summer season of Play Palace wraps up followed by the Kerrisdale Antiques Fair held in the Kerrisdale Arena over the Labour Day weekend, and soon skaters will be gliding across the ice. Thanksgiving and Halloween are just around the corner. Plan a costume to wear to Kerrisdale Business Association’s (KBA) free skate on October 27. KBA has been busy preparing to celebrate Kerrisdale’s 114th birthday on September 6 and 7. Read more about Kerrisdale Days on page 12 and get your dog ready for the new Great Kerrisdale Mutt Show! In this issue, we introduce you to two relatively new businesses in the village. Mathnasium opened in April 2018; it is the only learning centre in Kerrisdale that focuses exclusively on math. They recommend parents stay on top of things and invest in their child’s math skills early in the year. One Bowl opened in June and serves healthy, tasty and balanced meals in a bowl. Gryphon Musée is now open on West Boulevard. Read why they are excited to invite you to visit the free exhibition Above the Trees by Brent Comber, a renowned artist known worldwide for his thought-provoking wood sculptures. One Bowl:
Balanced Meals in a Bowl Story by Sarah Gordon

Healthy, tasty and balanced meals are the backbone of One Bowl, Kerrisdale’s new restaurant that opened on Balsam Street in mid-June.
Debbie is One Bowl’s executive chef. She trained at Le Cordon Bleu Tokyo where she developed a style of cooking that combines Asian flavours and western techniques.
Ivy Jiang, Frances Tan, Kelvin Xu and Debbie Yeh share a passion for food. They believe the secret to a healthy life is through balance, whether it is physical, mental or dietary.
Natural, unprocessed ingredients, colourful presentation, a variety of tastes and innovative techniques are used to produce her culinary creations.
“Kerrisdale needed this.” Debbie Yeh The partners pooled their talents to create the bright and airy restaurant in the former location of Rose House tearoom. The intentionally minimalistic surroundings feature white walls, white tables and chairs, wood floors, plants and brick arches that divide the restaurant into three distinct dining areas. 6
Debbie moved to Vancouver in 2001. She loves Kerrisdale and has lived in the neighbourhood for 18 years. She was previously Rose House’s pastry chef, and customers will be happy to learn that her pastry recipes have been incorporated into One Bowl’s menu.

Frances provides the creative direction and brings her marketing background to the business. She is also a licensed personal trainer. Frances comments, “We all love eating. When we tasted Debbie’s cooking for the first time it was ‘Wow!’” Ivy contributes her gift for photography and she is responsible for all of the images seen on social media. Kelvin is a personal trainer who has a vested interested in wellness. He manages menu development and nutritional analysis so if you are counting calories you will know the exact caloric breakdown of each bowl. All bowls are made fresh to order with vegetarian and gluten free options available. Ingredients are locally sourced with an
emphasis on utilizing seasonal and organic produce as much as possible. All food is produced in-house and the signature bowls provide a balance of proteins, vegetables, and starches. Sirloin steak mushroom is one of the popular signature bowls. It combines steak with wild rice, organic egg, kale, mixed greens, raspberry balsamic vinegar, wild mushrooms, and other assorted veggies. Debbie’s personal favourite is the spicy chicken breast bowl featuring brown rice, cucumber, pickled celery, bell peppers, kale and mixed greens, radish, lemon olive oil and pineapple balsamic. She remarks, “The spicy and sour dressing creates an Asian fusion flavour.”
“Our goal is to create harmony in a bowl.” Debbie Yeh There are eight signature bowls to choose from along with three salad bowls. The chia seed yogurt bowl won’t make you feel guilty in the slightest for indulging in dessert. It spotlights honey yogurt, berry sauce, fresh seasonal fruits, almond crumbs and slices of almond.

The drink menu mustn’t be missed. One of Frances’ favourites is the fuzzy balsamic vinegar iced drink. She explains, “This drink is not only refreshing but also is loaded with health benefits including being good for digestion and weight loss.” All baked goods are made daily. Ivy’s personal favourite is the cranberry scone. She confesses with a smile, “I eat one or two each day.” The scone is served with a homemade apple, rose, raspberry, cranberry jam and it is delectable.
Customers are celebrating the arrival of One Bowl and some are already becoming regulars. In addition to dining in, take out orders are popular or food can be delivered by Uber Eats or Skip the Dishes. Debbie concludes, “Healthy food can be both tasty and interesting.” She and her partners look forward to welcoming you to One Bowl.
There are numerous treats to choose from (banana dark chocolate loaf, raspberry cheesecake, carrot cake with cream cheese frosting to name only a few) with additional daily specials.

Only an hour and a half from Tokyo, it makes an excellent day trip. Kyoto is the polar opposite of Tokyo. Because it was virtually unscathed during WWII, many of its traditional Buddhist temples, Zen gardens and Shinto shrines remain. It is considered to be the cultural heart of Japan. Osaka is another vibrant bustling city, Japan’s third largest, but is not quite as widespread as Tokyo. It boasts great food, great shopping, and some unique experiences! End of Summer Update Notes from the Kerrisdale Business Association All good things must come to end, including the summer, or so they say, and nobody says it better than the Village of Kerrisdale. There’s been lots of change over the past decades; businesses that were mere ‘start-ups’ in the early 1960s have evolved under a new generation’s watchful eye or made way altogether for entrepreneurs with new and diverse ideas. What doesn’t change is Kerrisdale’s village feel, chock-full of traditions like the Little League Parade, horse and carriage rides and end of season ‘blow-outs’ featured during our annual summer event. Join in the fun at Kerrisdale Days this year on September 6 and 7 from 11am-4pm. Relish in being a ‘Kerrisdaler’ like the hundreds of residents, retailers and service providers who came before you and who have called this place home since 1905.
Movie Night in Elm Park
Friday, September 6 (Rain Date: Saturday, September 7) As we reflect back on the moon landing a half century ago, this year’s outdoor movie will look to the stars by featuring Steven Spielberg’s 1977 classic Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Join your friends and neighbours at one of Vancouver’s most scenic community parks under a half moon, a place ripe for making new childhood memories or remembering your own. Grab a blanket or lawn chair plus a flashlight to Elm Park where you’ll cadge a spot on either side of the cool, green field. Movie will start around 7:45–8:00pm. Rain night is September 7. The Great Kerrisdale Mutt Show debuts September 7 New this year will be our first ever Mutt Show. Everybody loves their dog(s) and we’ll get to see four footed participants prance their stuff for this bound to be hilarious event. It will all start with free registration at 10am at W. 41st Avenue and Yew Street north. The Mutt Show will feature ten categories such as Best Lap Dog, Best Singer, Best Look-a-Like, etc. There will be Blue Ribbons and other edible prizes for participants. All dogs must be on a short leash and owners need to have pooper scooper bags at the ready. Event is scheduled for 11am-1pm.
Kerrisdale Village Sequoia - Update The stately evergreen Sequoia, that graced our Village for probably more than 100 years, was removed earlier this year but not before the KBA arranged to receive a major section of its flawless red wood. We are waiting to get this section milled and then transported to Magee Secondary School where woodworking students will fashion slab benches for the Arbutus Greenway. Fingers crossed that we can turn the sorrow of this woody sentinel’s demise into a ‘remembrance’ along the popular walk/bike way. We’ll keep you posted.

Helping Math Make Sense Story by Sarah Gordon Photos by Sandra Steier Math is a subject that can either be met with trepidation or embraced with open arms. Whether your child starts out far behind or is already excelling in math, Mathnasium helps them leap ahead because any child can be successful in math—it’s a matter of teaching it in a way that makes sense to them. It all began 40 years ago when Californian educator Larry Martinek saw a serious disconnect between students’ basic skills training and the curriculum they were expected to master in the years to come. His goal was to provide children with a strong foundation for success. He developed a blend of methods and materials, which focused on helping children understand math by honing their math instincts. In 2002 education industry leaders Peter Markovitz and David Ullendorff made Larry Martinek and his curriculum the driving force of Mathnasium. The first learning centre 14
opened in Westwood, California. Subsequently, Mathnasium has become an international success story.
This education strategy has met with great success by using a unique combination of mental, verbal, visual, tactile, and written techniques. There are currently eleven Mathnasium locations in the Lower Mainland. In April 2018 Manju Ranamuka became the owner and director of Kerrisdale’s new location. Manju was a teacher in Sri Lanka and also worked as an immigration consultant. She has a passion for math, and says, “It was always my favourite subject in school.”

If math is not your child’s favourite subject it can be frustrating to assist them with homework, especially if you are a bit rusty or don’t have the faintest idea what they are working on.
“We teach math basics. We take on that role for the parents.” Manju Ranamuka She mentions the advantage of Mathnasium’s customized programs for each student. It is common to see students’ grades improve, and when this occurs their confidence rises. “We instruct in many different ways. We teach students to think critically. We teach them to use mental math skills and we don’t believe in using calculators for every answer,” says Manjula.
“We pinpoint your child’s learning needs, meet them where they are, and take them where they need to go.” Manju Ranamuka Mathnasium’s instructors all have a solid background in math. They are either teachers, math graduates, or are majoring in math. What they all share in common is a passion for the subject and a love of teaching. Manju points out, “Our instructors all bring their various stories and backgrounds to Mathnasium.”

Mathnasium instructors use a unique assessment process to determine exactly what each child knows and what they need to learn. Customized learning plans teach the concepts the student needs to master, and the instructors continually check progress to make sure the child truly understands and retains the concepts they are taught.

The centre provides enrichment to help prepare for entrance exams to attend private school or to get top marks in preparation for post secondary school. Manju was very excited about the prospect of operating Kerrisdale’s Mathnasium. She remarks, “It is such a beautiful neighbourhood. It’s very peaceful. The parents are very nice and I really enjoy the kids. It is wonderful to see grandparents dropping their grandchildren off. I appreciate the family bonds.” Elementary school age children through to Grade 12 students find Mathnasium offers a friendly atmosphere. There are reward programs in place to help students work towards their goals. These productivity rewards can be redeemed for small toys, math equipment or gift cards. Mathnasium’s students enjoy the special theme days, which include popcorn days, cookie nights, crazy hair days, painting hoodies, dressing up, and playing games. “We like to get them to have fun while doing math,” Manju says.

Helping a child master a concept is one of the greatest rewards for Manju and her staff. September means the start of a new school year—it’s also a time for new beginnings. Manju advises parents to stay on top of things and invest in their child’s math skills early in the year. She says, “We help students get ahead in math.”

Ever since Gryphon Development moved to Kerrisdale from Dunbar, we have been wanting to bring back the exhibition space we used to have in our showroom, Gryphon Musée. It is a platform created for local artists to
share and for the community to gather and experience art. So when a retail storefront became available on West Boulevard at W. 45th Avenue next to our office, Gryphon jumped on the opportunity to turn it into a new Gryphon Musée for Kerrisdale. Our team reached out to Brent Comber, a renowned artist known worldwide for his thought-provoking wood sculptures. Immediately we saw the alignment in our passions toward bringing art into everyday life and his continuation of engagement with the community.
Our guiding principle for design and development is “Art Lives Here.” Emphasizing art is in the core of everything we do. We value the passion; craftmanship and process of making something from start to 22

With Brent’s work, we were able to witness how art can connect people to nature and elevates the world in countless and exciting ways. “We are humbled with the opportunity to display Brent Comber’s newest exhibition at the Gryphon Musée” says Cody Ma, Director of Marketing at Gryphon Development. “We believe art is a language that is spoken without words and is a common denominator that reaches all people.”

Its importance as an industry in the past has propelled both the growth and prosperity of Vancouver. Gryphon Development supports the arts through various initiatives where both known artists, such as Brent, and aspiring artists are featured through our exhibition space. We also continue to host free artisan workshops as we strive to promote the art of living, and it is our hope that Gryphon can make a difference in enriching the community.
