Publisher’s Note With 2020 behind us, we look optimistically to this new year to bring an end to the COVID-19 pandemic that is causing hardships for our local businesses. Congratulations to Pierre’s Antiques, Buchan’s Kerrisdale Stationery, The Optical Boutique, and BMO Bank of Montreal, the winners of Kerrisdale’s Best Decorated Window this past December. The days are already getting longer and we see signs of spring with cherry blossom buds and plants pushing through the soil. Soon there will be increased sunshine and more options for sitting outdoors with social distancing. 2021 is the Year of the Ox, and Chinese New Year celebrations began on February 12. Teachers, students, and parents eagerly await their next break which begins on March 15, followed by St. Patrick’s Day, the arrival of spring on March 20, and the celebration of Easter in early April. Since 2012, Kerrisdale Insider has published 47 magazines; we are happy to be entering our 10th year with the support of the Kerrisdale Business Association and loyal advertisers. Many Kerrisdale Insider readers will recognize the merchant featured on our cover. Zul Suleman is the owner of Market Meats located in the centre of Kerrisdale. Kerrisdale’s Go-to Gourmet Butcher Shop Story by Sarah Gordon You are in for a treat the moment you walk through Market Meats’ sliding glass door. The large butcher shop is a visual feast with beautifully stocked display cases, but equally important are the staff behind the counter and their commitment to their customers. It is both the quality products and kind acts that make this business truly shine. Market Meats’ president Zul Suleman worked for 17 years with his father, who was also a butcher. As a teenager, Zul worked alongside him during holidays and vacations. Like his father, this has been Zul’s lifelong career. When his dad retired, he started his own business.
“It was all I ever knew how to do. It was my calling,” Zul says with a smile. 8
His loyal customers would agree he does his job exceptionally well. The first Market Meats shop opened in 1998 in Port Coquitlam. Zul sold that shop and two years later opened Market Meats in Kitsilano. This popular storefront is a community anchor that people turn to for top-quality meats and gourmet food items. In October 2019, Zul opened his West 41st Avenue shop. He had been looking for a second location for Market Meats for several years and identified Kerrisdale as the perfect community as a butcher was noticeably absent. The shop is three times larger than the Kitsilano store; there is plenty of room to spread out and take in the wide variety of meat, poultry, seafood, and gourmet foods. The bustling shop has seen steady growth

in customers and sales. There are 10 to 12 employees on the floor all day. Zul comments, “We have been embraced by the community.” Stringent protocols are in place during the pandemic; both staff and customers safety is taken very seriously. Cleanliness is extremely important to Zul; he has a cleaner come in every day after hours. He says, “Having a spotless shop all of the time is just common sense.” He notes, “During the pandemic people are staying close to home and cooking at home. They are going out of their way to support smaller businesses.” He hopes this loyal support has created a habit and will carry on once the pandemic ends. “We are lucky to be open during the pandemic. It’s the simplicity of life; people will always need to put food on their tables,” says Zul. It’s like a flashback to a simpler time, the way

Zul assists customers and makes a point of doing things himself. He believes in providing extra care and attention. He says, “Nice is free.” He and his knowledgeable staff will happily carry a bag to a customer’s car or offer suggestions about cuts of meat and tips on how to properly prepare a mouth-watering meal. Zul adds, “It’s kindness. Customer service is all about treating people the way you would like to be treated.”

What can you expect to find at Market Meats? Quality artisan meats and gourmet grocery items abound. Zul says, “I look for the cool factor when I stock the shops.” Market Meats is committed to high quality, unique food. In normal times, Zul travels to international food shows where he discovers new products and equipment. He mentions, “Keeping on-trend is really important.” Among the gourmet food selections you will find cheese, charcuterie, pasta, homemade stocks, condiments, rubs, marinades, and sauces.

The Kerrisdale shop has a full kitchen, smokehouse, and brining factory where sausages, smoked turkey, smoked ham, and bacon are created. Zul explains, “We produce our own products and control what goes into them.” He mentions, “We try to do things on a quarterly basis according to the season. For example, in the summer people are grilling, they are not making pot roasts. We have to know what our customers want.”
“We like to showcase different parts of Canada.” Meat and poultry originate from organic farms where animals are fed natural diets. You will find veal from Quebec, along with foie gras and duck. Beef is brought in from Alberta, B.C., and P.E.I. and poultry is sourced locally.

In addition to quality artisan meats, Market Meats offers a wide range of prepared cooked foods made on-site by three chefs. Whether customers are looking to feed one person or a family, they love the convenience of these diverse meals. If it is a cooked turkey dinner you are looking for, this is the place to visit. The kitchen looks at annual celebrations such as Chinese New Year or Jewish holidays and creates dishes to help celebrate these special dates. A Chinese New Year dish may feature pork while meals for Rosh Hashanah might include chopped liver or brisket.
Zul derives joy from being behind the counter and on the floor, looking after customers and helping them get what they need. He says, “I like making customers’ lives easier. I make time for them.” “I stand by what I sell. I will never sell anything to a customer that I wouldn’t be willing to put on a plate for my family,” he says. “Market Meats is thrilled to be in the neighbourhood. We are going to be here for a long time looking after our customers,” Zul concludes.
There will be great offerings ahead for Easter. Zul anticipates there will continue to be smaller gatherings, and traditionally the most popular meats include ham, lamb, and turkey.

KERRISDALE OAKRIDGE MARPOLE COMMUNITY POLICING CENTRE: Helping Keep Kerrisdale Safe Story by Sarah Gordon

Vancouver’s west side is fortunate to have the Kerrisdale Oakridge Marpole Community Policing Centre. The KOM CPC relies on a volunteer base committed to helping prevent criminal activity while being a positive, proactive bridge between the neighbourhood and the Vancouver Police Department. The KOM CPC dates back to the late 1980s when the Oakridge area experienced an increase in crime. The neighbourhood’s police sub-station had closed down and the community lacked a visible police presence. In the late 1990s, the Oakridge Seniors’ Centre and the Marpole Oakridge Area Council Society had similar goals, to help improve community safety and crime prevention. The Vancouver Police Department prompted the two groups to work together and assigned a full-time constable to the area.

The Marpole Community Policing Centre opened in 1999. In early 2000, thanks to volunteer efforts, it extended to Kerrisdale. The KOM CPC is located on East Boulevard near West 44th Avenue. It is open Monday to Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The VPD uses the office around the clock as needed. Kate Molloy is KOM CPC’s new executive director; she has been with the non-profit organization for six months. Kate arrived in Canada two years ago from her native Ireland. She has an M.A. in Public Advocacy from the National University of Ireland, Galway. She says, “This is a big part of why I work in community-based organizations.”

She mentions, “Community policing was new to me when I first began. This is not something we have in Ireland. I have always enjoyed working with the community and what better way to do that than by helping with problems they might be having? There are a lot of different areas in community policing, which is great. We get to work hands-on with a variety of people. Most days are different from the day before which I enjoy.” Constable James Hooper is the Community Policing Centre’s NPO (Neighbourhood Police Officer). He is a direct VPD member who works as one of the head contacts in Patrol District Four. Crime reporting can be done at the community policing centre. Drop in and the staff will create a folder, take notes of what happened and make a report. Constable Hooper reads it and follows up. If the matter is too serious, it may have to be reported directly to the VPD. Crimes including theft under $10,000, stolen vehicles, lost property, stolen or lost plates and validation tags, and lost or stolen passports can be reported by calling the KOM CPC office, and they will report it to the VPD.
years old to volunteer. Some volunteers hope to pursue a career in law enforcement, while others are committed to community safety and positive engagement. Kate says, “All of the volunteers work really well together.” Volunteers patrol the neighbourhood both day and night by foot. Unique to the KOM CPC, its high-visibility night patrol executes afterdark patrols focused on areas experiencing increased activity. Focused on deterrence and awareness, patrol routes are chosen using VPD crime statistics and neighbourhood input to maximize visibility. The night patrol does not intervene in crimes. The Bike Patrol is essential for patrolling the KOM CPC’s 28-square kilometre area, roughly forty per cent of Vancouver’s landmass. In addition to community patrols, their highvisibility CAN-BIKE certified volunteers carry out crime prevention activities requiring fastresponse such as VPD-issued crime alerts and theft from auto audits.

Volunteers hear plenty of positive feedback from locals who appreciate their presence and applaud their work. Volunteers will also visit local businesses to listen to any complaints or concerns. This service familiarizes businesses with the KOM CPC and lets them know the community policing centre is there for them. Kate played an instrumental role in launching and running the Marpole Community Food Hub. In early December 2020, she coordinated three groups of volunteers to work three times a week to assist with packing bags and distributing food. The Salvation Army, Monte Cristo Bakery, and the Greater Vancouver Food Bank provide food donations to this ongoing program that feeds approximately 220 people a week in the Kerrisdale, Oakridge, and Marpole neighbourhoods. This has helped promote KOM CPC’s name and has also brought in new volunteers. In partnership with ICBC, high-visibility Speed Watch volunteers are deployed on roadways to gently remind motorists to reduce speeds and keep their eyes on the road.
COVID-19 pandemic and special events are currently on hold, KOM CPC volunteers are typically engaged in community events such as Kerrisdale Days, Marpole Family Day Festival, and Pink Shirt Days, as well as activities in partnership with local schools. If you are looking for an opportunity to give back to your community by participating in patrols, event outreach, presentations, and office activities, assisting the VPD or other community policing centres when needed, the KOM CPC always welcomes and greatly appreciates new volunteers. Thank you for all that you do for Kerrisdale and our neighbouring communities, KOM CPC staff, and volunteers!
