Publisher’s Note Hello, spring! It is such a pleasure to see cherry trees blooming, to hear birds chirping and to feel the warmth of the sun again. Congratulations to the Kerrisdale Business Association which is celebrating 30 years of Business Improvement Areas (BIAs) in Vancouver! Visit the village and check out KBA’s beautifully designed spring/summer street banners. Kerrisdale Arena’s Play Palace is now open for indoor playground fun. Easter is just a hop and skip away. Meanwhile, baseball players are eagerly awaiting Little League season which commences with the opening day parade on April 27. The Kerrisdale Business Association is busy planning Kerrisdale Carnival Days with fun for all including horse and carriage rides, entertainers, face painting and music. Merchants will showcase their businesses with special incentives and super sidewalk sales on April 26 and 27. Kerrisdale has always been a great place to buy shoes, and that is why it is so exciting to welcome Ronsons back to where the business began 32 years ago. Read how father and son team Mayer and Tony Aronson created this successful shoe empire that now has 20 locations.

Owner Garrick Cheung and his team offer registered massage therapy, craniosacral therapy, traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture and Chinese acupressure. Read about Vancouver Debate Academy (VDA), an award-winning local after-school academy specializing in the sport of debate. Sadly, the iconic Sequoia tree in the 2300 Block of West 41st Avenue succumbed to whatever ailed it and was taken down by the property owner on March 2, 2019. Thanks to the Kerrisdale Business Association its memory will live on; an 18 foot piece will be milled and transformed into beautiful benches for the Arbutus Greenway. Spring in Kerrisdale is a time for gardening, spring cleaning, garage sales, outdoor dining and barbecues. It’s also a wonderful time to stroll the village streets and explore the local shops, restaurants and services that make up this charming neighbourhood. Enjoy taking in all of the sights, smells and sounds of beautiful spring!

Ronsons:

Ronsons is back in Kerrisdale where the company first planted its roots 32 years ago. A fire destroyed the shop in 2017, and it took time to find a new location to reopen the business father and son team Mayer and Tony Aronson created in 1987. Sadly, Mayer passed away last December. Tony mentions how happy his father was that Ronsons would once more be operating on West 41st Avenue. Mayer had a life long career retailing shoes. Tony got his start in the shoe business at age 12, working Saturdays as a cashier in one of his father’s shoe stores in Cape Town, South Africa. In 1977 the Aronson family moved to Canada to pursue new opportunities.

The Aronsons established both their home and shop in Kerrisdale. Tony loves the neighbourhood and continues to reside here. When naming the store they were looking for something memorable. By dropping the letter A from their surname they decided Ronsons would be easier to pronounce.

Tony reports, “It was essential to have people in the business who understood that kindness needs to be given to our customers and that they had the ability to do so. We also realized it was essential to have loyal, long-term employees in place who could continue the culture through the years. We are extremely lucky we have been able to do just that. I am so proud of the team we have in place and the commitment they have to our goal of strengthening and continuing that essential customer experience.” “I believe in 32 years we have achieved that sense of kindness in our culture and that is what makes me most proud,” he adds.

Over the years Ronsons has grown by leaps and bounds. There are now 20 locations in B.C. Tony mentions, “As the largest independently owned group of shoe stores in B.C. we work very closely with our suppliers so we can offer the best prices anywhere to our customers.” You may have noticed not every Ronsons store is identical. The company has created three distinct store concepts: their regular Ronsons locations, Ronsons RACK clearance

stores and Ronsons with a RACK at the back, which is a full blown Ronsons store with a clearance section where you may find the shoe of your dreams. “We are very conscious of our pricing. Our prices are better than U.S. pricing almost all the time and we have worked with our suppliers to make this happen,” says Tony.

Ronsons has an impressive online presence. While Tony feels shopping in person makes finding the correct size and feel of the shoe easier, if you are just trying to replace an existing shoe, the website is a convenient way to make a purchase. The shop’s website also offers a ship to store option. Customers can browse from the comfort of their home and ship their selection to the Ronsons of their choice to try on for size. Quality and comfort are words that come up often in conversation with Tony. He is actively involved in purchasing and mentions that he shops the world to find the perfect shoes to offer his valued customers. A few of the many notable brands Ronsons’ carries include Kodiak and Sorel (both proudly Canadian), Ecco, Clarks and the store’s own Ronsports line. Extending Ronsons’ belief in kindness to the community at large, Tony and his wife Carolyn are actively involved with the Two/ Ten Foundation of Canada. Carolyn heads up B.C.’s donation campaign. She and many dedicated volunteers and donors have collected thousands of pairs of new shoes for Metro Vancouver charities, which distribute shoes to people in need.

Tony concludes, “When my father took a young and inexperienced son on as a partner 32 years ago, who knew where it would go. itself, I decided to start Ridgepoint Wellness. I took a chance and I am so pleased I did.” He graduated from West Coast College of Massage Therapy in 1996. Over the last 23 years Garrick has worked in various areas in the industry including program and clinical development and management; he has also worked in spas and taught at colleges.

Many of Garrick’s clients have been using his massage therapy services for over 15 years and have nothing but glowing words to share. Vancouver Debate Academy: The Sport of Competitive Reasoning Article & photos submitted Vancouver Debate Academy (VDA) is a local after-school academy in Kerrisdale specializing in the sport of debate. Our program began in September 2016 with a small team of three long-time Vancouver-based debate coaches. Since then we have expanded to over t welve debate coaches,all of whom were once or are currently debaters the U BC Debate Society, western Canada's most competitive debating club. Adrian Lask, one of our top coaches, has been selected to coach Team Mexico for the upcoming 2019 World Schools Debating Championships in Sri Lanka! DEBATE is a sport of competitive reasoning. Teams take turns speaking for and against a topic to persuade a judge of their argument’s winning qualities. Debating helps: • CONFIDENCE & PUBLIC SPEAKING Debaters practice public speaking every class, developing a crucial skill. • CRITICAL THINKING Debate is a sport of logical reasoning - debaters learn to be quick thinkers. • ESSAY WRITING Essays are like debate speeches, requiring logical, structured arguements. • UNIVERSITY APPLICATIONS Today’s universities increasingly look at extracurricular activities such as debate. 26

In the Vancouver Debate Academy’s first year, most of our students were beginners at debating; with our coaching, our debaters w on awards at e very high school tournament we competed at in our first year (September 2016 to August 2017). Since then, we have won awards both locally and internationally every year, including our latest success at Stanford this February: VDA students Elizabeth Zhou and Yuki Zhao were the Champion team, taking first place at the 2019 Stanford Invitational in California, while Cynthia Fung and Nick Liu won second place. This was the first time a Canadian team had ever won the Stanford tournament, much less both 1st and 2nd, as well as other teams that were octa-finalists and triple octa-finalists -- we are very proud of all our debaters. Their dedication and skill is a testament to their motivation and work ethic. Our goal is to help kids become sharp thinkers and fearless speakers by providing them rigorous classroom practice and opportunities to compete at challenging competitions. We accommodate students at different levels of debating skill by placing them in classes best for their ability - foundations, intermediate, and advanced for regular classes, and a special competitive program for the Vancouver Debate Academy’s top debaters. Classes are divided by age as well as level, and range from 3 to 8 students. VDA’s goal is to tailor debate coaching to the needs and abilities of the students. While there is a general curriculum focused on introducing students to the key skills and knowledge areas in competitive debate, coaches will adjust the timing and content of the general curriculum to the progress of students and upcoming tournaments. As students are confirmed to compete at tournaments throughout the year, coaches will have to adjust class plans according to tournament attendance. This allows classes to transition from general skill-building toward intensive competitive preparation when necessary.

Overall the curriculum goals for each semester are to practice or introduce students to: • • • • •
Effective argumentation, rebuttal and speech structure, Debate rules and conventions, Good debating habits (like note-taking and effective research), Various contemporary issues, Advanced strategy and important debating tactics (such as weighing impacts and using case studies).
In terms of contemporary issues, students can expect to learn about: • • • •
Purpose and features of the criminal justice system Major issues in international relations Basic ideas in economics as they relate to debate rounds Relevant current events, which may include • use of force by police • the treatment of minorities • the benefits and harms of government policies These knowledge areas are spread throughout multiple semesters rather than a single semester and where topics for a tournament are known in advance the curriculum is adjusted to align classes with tournament preparation. Debate is a fun, engaging, and competitive way to build friendships, advance skills, and gain world knowledge. It is our belief that everyone benefits from debate. For many, the benefits of debate are practical skills like confidence or engaging with global issues, while for some debate is about competing to win debate tournaments - the Vancouver Debate Academy promises to take on anyone who is ready to learn. Kerrisdale’s Iconic Sequoia Tree by Terri Clark, Kerrisdale Business Association To everyone’s disappointment, the iconic Sequoia tree in the 2300 Block of West 41st Avenue succumbed to whatever ailed it and was taken down by the property owner on March 2, 2019. The tremendous task of dismantling this huge woody sentinel on a major emergency route in Vancouver, called for a late night removal starting at 10 pm and finishing up at 4 am. The Kerrisdale Business Association was able to negotiate for an 18 foot piece of the tree from the butt end (71 inches across). Kerrisdale Lumber owner Mark Perry arranged the transport of the wood and it will eventually be milled and transformed into beautiful benches for the Arbutus Greenway.
