Publisher’s Note Here we are publishing the winter issue during the COVID-19 pandemic, truly a year we will not forget. Happily, we are surrounded by the beauty of colourful falling leaves and crisp, cool autumn days with the holiday season fast approaching! Due to the pandemic, Kerrisdale is unable to host the annual events that we eagerly anticipate such as free skating and horse carriage rides, however, shop owners have worked tirelessly to remain open with safety protocols in place. The Kerrisdale Business Association has been a leader in helping businesses get the message out that they have safely re-opened. On the cover is Glenn Knowles, owner of Gem Chocolates, and president of the Kerrisdale Business Association. In this issue, we feature two businesses that are community anchors. At 71 years old, Kerrisdale Bootery is one of the neighbourhood’s oldest businesses, and it is one of the only remaining shoe stores in the village. The pandemic has been difficult for many businesses. In the early months, owner John Lewis worked on his own to help his shop survive. Hager Books is a charming character shop, which has been a destination for booklovers since 1974. Now more than ever, people are

turning to books as an escape to take their minds off these challenging pandemic times. It is exciting to see new businesses opening. LensCrafters is opening at the former Ronsons location. Jess’ Restaurant renovations are in progress (the former Bean Brothers Café location). Alive Health Centre will soon open (former Flight Centre location). Pebble Kids opened on East Blvd. Southland Floral moved into the village to Vine Street. Baan Wasana Thai Restaurant is reopening after fire renovations. Kerrisdale Custom Tailors is moving around the corner to West Blvd. Skin Medical Kerrisdale is moving up a block in January. Jacadi, Kenmore Travel, and Prestige Kitchens have closed. SOS Children’s Village Thrift Store closes at the end of November, and we say goodbye to Andy Trott Menswear when Andy Trott retires at the end of December. While many of us have resorted to online shopping over the past few months, consider supporting local businesses first as you prepare to celebrate Christmas, Diwali, Hanukkah, or Kwanzaa. Kerrisdale’s business owners welcome you and truly appreciate the community’s support. We wish you a season filled with joy, peace, and hope as we look forward to the new year.

Kerrisdale Business Association: Winter Update by Terri Clark
Kerrisdale Window Decorating Contest
Kerrisdale Village is ‘rolling out the holly’ in preparation for the Annual Window Decorating Contest to be judged the night of Wednesday, December 9th. We have two categories: Financial institutions and Banks along with the General Retail and Services. The sprucing up of windows, planters and entryways with a variety of greens, will contribute massively this year to cheerful facades, when social distancing will prevent us from offering the usual array of holiday events. In keeping with our ‘let there be light’ welcoming atmosphere at our busiest time of year, bedecked lamp standards will be ablaze with twinkling white lights, along with our multi-coloured Welcome Sign swags, starting soon after November 11.
Kerrisdale Parkade
Parking is still free in the Kerrisdale Parkade but users must register their license plates for two hours of free parking. After two hours you must pay or risk receiving a ticket from the City of Vancouver’s parking arm EasyPark.
Kerrisdale Business Improvement Association Renewal
The Kerrisdale Business Association held its Annual General Meeting on September 10, 2020 at the Arbutus Club and via ZOOM. This was a most important year as our BIA was up for its Five-Year Renewal from April 1, 2021 to March 31, 2026. The KBA Board of Directors thought long and hard about any increases in the operating budget over this span of time, and in the end recommended NO INCREASE in view of the financial hardship experienced by each and every Kerrisdale business. This no increase budget was approved unanimously at the meeting. With this in mind, and with funds saved due to event cancellations in 2020, we plan on getting through the next five years while concentrating on security, beautification, and communication about the wonderful shops and services available in Kerrisdale. 6

Kerrisdale Bootery: Fitting Feet Since 1949 Story by Sarah Gordon

At 71 years old, Kerrisdale Bootery is one of the neighbourhood’s oldest businesses. It has stood the test of time and endured some challenges, but it has marched on with clever management decisions and the support of loyal customers. The 2008 market crash took its toll on the shop for a few years. The biggest threat currently not only to Kerrisdale Bootery but also to businesses worldwide is the COVID-19 pandemic. In the spring of 2020 when many businesses temporarily closed, owner John Lewis continued working on his own to help his shop survive.

John says, “The store was started by a Mr. Ferris and a Mr. Fairhurst in partnership I believe, and at some point, they sold it to Pete Holmes. In 1965, Jim and Kay Peart bought the store and made the store a success. Their son Murray took over in 1986 and owned it until 1992 when they sold out of the family to Laurene Clark.”
He says, “It has been rough, but we are thankful for the government programs and our landlord Lorne Goldman who stepped up to keep us alive.”
After six years as the store’s manager, John became the sole owner and has now been with Kerrisdale Bootery for 20 years.

comments, “Amusingly, there is some writing on a concrete wall in the stockroom that says ‘Kilroy was here August 10, 1942.” It is not uncommon to see three generations of customers shopping together. He says, “It’s a real treat to see customers who I’ve served since they were young bring in their own children as well as former part-time employees who come back with their kids to get fitted. We want to encourage people to not forget about the in-store shopping experience as opposed to online shopping or all the brickand-mortar stores will disappear.” “When I took over there was a strong emphasis on women’s matronly dressy footwear in various widths which were not selling well, so I improved our selection with more modern styles and fewer widths. Over time children’s footwear sales became more important and in the last 10 years has been a full 50 per cent of our sales. I have also created a strong slipper business, which currently is a plus as more people are working from home. Also, under my ownership, I recognized the need for a good selection of rain boots. Approximately 20 years ago The Weather Channel did a segment in my store on our rain boot collection,” he says.

The shop’s children’s selection (which includes private school footwear) rivals any other store in Vancouver and keeps families coming back as purchasing shoes online can be a fitting challenge.
“For the colder days ahead we will be getting a line of alpaca socks for kids and of course we have a great selection of slippers which can be a very comforting holiday gift,” John says.
John is grateful for his assistant Maureen, who is a former Panda shoe store employee. She has been with Kerrisdale Bootery for seven years. John believes when it comes to fitting kids’ shoes he and Maureen are Vancouver’s most experienced and knowledgeable. The shop’s bookkeeper Colleen has been with the store for over 30 years. John is the third owner she has worked for and he applauds Colleen’s dedication and attention to detail that has helped keep Kerrisdale Bootery’s back office in order. He is also appreciative of his part-time team that regularly get compliments on their excellent service.
One of the greatest rewards for John is developing relationships with customers and staff. It is pleasing to know that the products he picks are meeting people’s needs and making them happy. He comments, “We carry footwear for the whole family, as I like to say, from one year old to 100 years old.” Some of the brands carried include Bogs, Geox, Josef Seibel, Kamik, Skechers and Stride Rite, although the shop carries many brands and some change from year to year. 10

Hager Books:
A Little Bookstore with Staying Power Story by Sarah Gordon Photos by Carolynne Palla Independent bookstores are not very common anymore and Kerrisdale is extremely fortunate to have Hager Books in the community. This charming character shop has been one of Kerrisdale’s anchor businesses that has stood the test of time for 46 years. Andrea Davies has had a lengthy career in retail. She owned Anvil Books in New Westminster for 10 years. Her friend, Louise Hager, opened Hager Books in Kerrisdale in 1974. When she decided to sell the business in 1985 she approached Andrea, who was thrilled to return to her Kerrisdale roots where she was born and bred. Andrea and her staff members are all book lovers. The shop exudes the warmth of a family-run business, which is not surprising as her sister Kim Phillips, her stepdaughters Carrie Darragh and Susannah Thorvaldson work alongside Andrea. Staff member Jaana Lunny rounds out the team. 14
If you are looking for something specific, Hager’s staff will happily offer their opinions about their favourite genres of books. While space is at a premium, there is a wide selection to choose from including art, biographies, business, Canadian content, children, cooking, fantasy, fiction, gardening, history, mystery, psychology, and reference. The space was formerly a shoe store and the shelves were cleverly converted to display books. The size of the shop limits the public events that Hager Books can offer, however, they do host occasional book signings and have had local authors drop in to promote their books.

The shop’s customers are extremely supportive and loyal. Andrea enjoys the camaraderie of her friendly and intelligent book-loving customers and finds Kerrisdale to be a very close-knit community. During the COVID-19 pandemic book clubs are still carrying on. Some meet via Zooms and other online book clubs have surfaced in response to people looking for social interaction. Hager Books offers book clubs a 10 per cent discount if they order five or more copies of the same book, and pick them up in one transaction. There is something very special about a bound book; from the weight of holding it in your hands and being able to flip to a certain page to reread a section, to the smell, the artwork, the satisfaction of reaching the last page, sometimes the sad goodbye when a book concludes that you love so much and don’t ever want it to end, and finally finding a home for it on a bookshelf, or passing it along to a friend as a must-read.

Hager Books’ website is filled with books to browse at your leisure. You are invited to order online and pick up at the shop. COVID-19 has been a challenge for all businesses that were forced to close in the spring, and to this day adaptations have had to be made. Hager Books is no exception. They limit the number of customers in the store and have reduced hours of operation to accommodate extra cleaning. In this uniquely upside-down year, with travel to exotic destinations not being an option, books offer endless possibilities to escape to different locations and time periods. It is more important than ever to help independent businesses thrive by shopping locally this holiday season. If you don’t know someone’s literary taste, consider a gift certificate so they can treat themselves. Andrea suggests puzzles also make a wonderful gift and are perfect for the winter months when we will be tucked away indoors.

Girlie Koo, Kerrisdale Business Icon, Gone at 99 Article by Terri Clark Girlie Koo, the produce matriarch of Kerrisdale’s once JB Hoy grocers, died in mid-September shortly after suffering a fall. She was 99 and up until late summer still taking daily walks with her son Bob. She was born on Pender Street in Chinatown in 1921 but moved to Kerrisdale in 1925 when her father built a store in the 2100 block on the south side of West 41st Avenue. By 1930, her father, JB Hoy, realized it was better to be on the sunny side of the street,so he bought a building and moved his business directly across West 41st and lived in the above apartment it with his growing family. His second daughter was the first Chinese child born outside of Chinatown in Vancouver. Upon Hoy’s death the business was sold to Allen Koo who Girlie married in 1938. She too raised her family above the retail space. Upon Allen’s death in 2001, Girlie and her two sons decided to retire and redeveloped their property with a stylish new building which they own to this day. Girlie was the constant smiling face of JB Hoy’s and saw generations of Kerrisdale children grow and thrive over her nearly 70 years of working the cash register while obtaining some

of the finest produce available, long before much larger supermarkets did. You had to be a regular customer to know that her prized and unscathed avocados were kept in the back to escape the ‘squeezing’ hands of the uninitiated. I personally will miss Girlie as she rarely missed the Carnival Days Parade or Kerrisdale’s annual birthday party in early September. Better yet, she would occasionally arrive at my doorstep with a bag of beautiful, perfect avocados that she had sourced knowing how I loved them.

An update from KERRISDALE Community Centre Society We’ve missed you! The Kerrisdale Community Centre is excited to once again be providing programs and services to our community. While it’s not business as it used to be at the Community Centre, we’re bringing you programs and instructors you’ve enjoyed in the past. We are proud to be the first Vancouver community centre to offer our patrons a choice of both online and in person programs this fall. More programs will start in January. Online Programming: More than 70 programs for adults and children are presented online by many of Kerrisdale’s favourite instructors.
